Tomorrow is Alex's 2 month appointment - and she will get her first round of shots :( Hope she does okay. On the other hand I'm excited because this means I will be able to take her more places.

The little one is doing well! I have now eliminated both dairy and soy from my diet - and it seems like her digestion is a bit smoother - although who knows if that's from my dietary changes or just Alex getting a bit older. She still has some screaming fits when she poops, but not nearly as many.

So - the biggest news is that she was sleeping through the night for about a week! She would cluster feed in the evenings and then sleep from about 11 or 12pm until 7 or 8am!!! It was awesome.. The last two nights though she's gone back to waking up at least once. I knew it was too good to be true at her yound age ;)

dbers - good luck at the doctor - I've also been told to give them some tylenol about 30 minutes before the appointment.

I am taking Ashley to the doctor today - she has gas so bad she screams all the time. I made the mistake of switching to soy formula over the weekend - which made her consitpated - we were up all night with a baby screaming in pain. There has got to be something they can do for her because I can't stand to see her in pain one second longer - those gas drops do not work at all.

My MIL is a complete a**hole. We went over for dinner last night - Ashley was fussy to begin with and I didn't want to go but it was DH grandmothers birthday - she screamed the entire time because not only was she gassy - she was overly tired (she is a nosey baby - she won't sleep or eat if there are a lot of people around - she wants to sit up and look around). My MIL REFUSED to give her back to me - at one point, when she had been screaming for 20 minutes - I went up and put my arms up and said I will take her and she quickly walked away from me and said "I've got her, you need a break. Go eat dinner" (who can eat while your child is screaming??). And then she screamed for another hour until DH went and took her (funny, she wouldn't give her to me..but she handed her off to DH). Now, part of me wants to think that she was trying to be helpful but most of me thinks she is just a b*tch. Of course my DH just sat there like a stump - he should have told his mother to hand her over. After DH got her and she wouldn't calm down, I took her and got her to sleep within 10 minutes. Then she proceeds to tell me how I am spoiling her by holding her all the time.

Part of me wants to say something to her - I think when a child is crying - whoever has her should hand her over to a parent. DH reasoning is that his mother doesn't see her a lot and wants to hold her as much as possible (his mother is nuts and he is scared to set her off...but that is a different story) but like I told him, last night wasn't enjoyable for anyone. Then by the time we got her home, she was so overly tired, screaming, starving, and constipated. Do any of you have to deal with impossible MIL's?

sorry to be really quick here...hope everyone is doing well. So cool to see everyone's stats with their babies. hooray for the new thread :)

a question for those with hotslings...
Is your baby's head in or out of the sling? The online directions show the baby's head out but I think Elsa might just be too small for that still. I have a new native sling, but it hangs too low to use now so I borrowed a hotsling. My dad thought she looked really squooshed in it, but she seemed ok. Just wondering what other people's experiences are. TIA!

We're back from Alexandra's appointment. She's now 11 lbs, and doing great. I was able to talk to the doctor about my going off dairy/soy, etc. She did suggest that I take calcium supplements, so I got some Viactin on the way home.

The shots were sad - but Alex did okay. She SCREAMED and then the nurse told me to immediately start nursing her. She ate for a few minutes, and then fell fast asleep.. It was definitely traumatic, but she seems okay now. I gave her Tylenol when we got home, nursed her, and now I'm hoping she'll sleep. She's in her swing and actually seems pretty content!

Here's her stats:

Weight: 11 lbs. 3/4 oz.
Height: 22 inches

I think she's in about the 50th percentile for both

Do any of you have to deal with impossible MIL's?

5 minutes before I was scheduled to give birth to Courtney, my mother in law started crying and bawling because she's going through menopause. Talk about great timing. My MIL is absolutely the most selfish woman I've ever met in my entire life.

charmcitygirl

cr8zyforaf i can relate. totally. my MIL insists on being with J&Z alone all the time. she came by the other day and i had to run out to get milk and she said "good! go now! take your time" ummm... i was just walking to the corner. she took over feeding them so i told her that they had just been changed and not to worry about it. when i got back 10 minutes later, jake was being kind of whiny. i checked his diaper and saw that she had changed it! she fastened the sides so tight he was uncomfortable. she's always offering to babysit because i "need a break from the kids". i'm pretty sure i can make that decision on my own. unfortunately, charmcityboy thinks i'm being the PITA, not her. grrrr.... i know she's trying to help, but she doen't understand how to help me in a way that actually HELPS me. it's all very unfortunate b/c until i became the grandbaby-maker, we got along great. now i'm totally dreading the holidays...

in other news, the kids are starting to sleep 4-5 hour stretches at night. yippee! also, jake has decided it's time for him to get bf'ing "snacks" just like his sister. so i'm happy that both of them are getting at least some breastmilk.

dbers- I'm so happy to hear that Courtney seems okay after her shots...I'm terrified for Patrick's appointment on Friday!!!! that is good to know about nursing right away, I'll have to make sure I do the same.

Patrick has been a great sleeper for about a week now...goes down between 11pm and 12am and then sleeps until 5-6am, eats and then goes back to sleep until 9am! We don't want to jinx it but so far so good.

I am definitely thinking that he has acid reflux because about an hour after every meal he vomits...it doesn't seem to bother him all that much, just for aobut 5-10 mins and then he seems fine. Poor thing. I jumped on teh scale with him and I think he's up to 12 lbs so I don't think there is much we can do....

well, the little man just fell asleep so I'm off to do a quick workout.

Griffin's head is in the sling. I saw the pic with the head out too, there's no way he can do that right now. BeachbumB] had asked to see a pic in the other thread, I'll have my DH post one when he's done with work.

I am SO jealous of those of you with good sleepers. I'm beginning to think maybe we're putting him down too early, although I was really just following his cues. For several days he was wanting to go to bed around 7 or 8. Yesterday I tried putting him down at that time and it took THREE hours before he was asleep in his crib. UGH! Those of you that mentioned [B]cluster feeding, how does this work? Does that baby initiate it or do you? How long do you do it for before the baby is asleep for a long stretch?

dbers- Glad to hear Alex's shots went as well as they could. G has his next Tuesday and I'm dreading it! Thanks for mentioning the nursing right away, we'll definitely try that.

Hugs to everyone dealing with in-law issues...as if parenting wasn't hard enough!

Carrie - Alex really initiated it herself! Or should I say I stuck her on the boob because she was crying so much - and it became clear that she wanted to eat every two hours starting around 6pm.

Poor girl just woke up for a long nap - and her cry sounds so pathetic! I guess she doesn't feel good from the shots - so sad :(

cr8zyforaf

dbers - so glad the doctor visit went well..I bet you are glad to have that behind you.

PrincessCrappy- OMG...Griffin looks so comfy in his sling...and he is adorable. I love his chubby little cheeks! As far as cluster feeding - I usually initiate the feeding every hour starting around 7 - she will only drink an ounce or two at a time...she is usually down around 10:30 - 11 and I hold her for 30 minutes in the position that she fell alseep in to make sure she is in deep sleep - then I transfer her to her carseat (where she sleeps) - I can usually on a good night get 5-6 hours out of her (this was before the gas and constipation got so bad).

wife&wannabemom - I admire you for working out when you get a spare minute - that is the last thing I feel like doing once I finally get my bean down..good for you.

solongtogo - sorry you have a nutty MIL also - ours sound alike - mine went to the emergency room the day after I gave birth and got p*ssed because no one was really paying attention (this is something she does regularly so it isn't like we were being insensitive - and she came by the same evening to see the baby and was totally fine). She is a total nut case and makes up illnesses to get attention.

charmcitygirl - so sorry you are going through tough MIL issues as well. I think the husbands want us not to rock the boat because they know deep down their mothers are nut cases and saying something would send them off the deep end. Hooray that the babies are sleeping longer and getting some breast milk!

pixiecat - yes, inlaws...aren't they wonderful. We don't see them that often - but that is by my choice - if she had her way, she would be up here all the time. So glad you had a cry free evening...isn't it wonderful when they decide to stop screaming and act cute?? I guess they have to do that every now and then or women would stop having babies - the screaming does get very old after a few hours!

Well, Ashley is constipated and colicy - nothing we can do for the colic except try to pacify her - the doctor told me to give her prune juice for the constipation - poor thing - they took her temp and she started screaming and grunting - then she poop a big green brick - seriously, it was so hard - I could tell she was in pain - I started crying - the doctor must have thought I was nuts...I just hate to see her suffer and I haven't slept in days.

carrie thanks for the sling info. I couldn't see the pictures though :(. Maybe they will work for me later? Does it seem like it's tough to get Griffen in the sling? It's such a tighter sling than the new native I feel like she's so squooshed!

cr8zy- how sad Ashley is constipated! I would have cried too. It's so hard to see the little ones uncomfortable.

I'm curious about the cluster feeding too... thanks for posting info. How often do your babies eat when they aren't "cluster feeding"?
TIA!

Those of you that mentioned cluster feeding, how does this work? Does that baby initiate it or do you? How long do you do it for before the baby is asleep for a long stretch?

The first night I initiated the cluster feedings beginning at 5pm...I'll BF Patrick every 2 hours for as long as he wants. After the first night, he started initiating the feedings every 2 hours...generally they are almost full feeds except the last one at 11pm. DH and I too tried to put him down early but he doesn't like to go to sleep until 11pm or so...he cat naps starting at around 9pm but just doesn't stay asleep. So, I BF him at 5, 7, and 9pm....after his 9pm bottle (DH gives him 4 oz of EBM), then we try and calm him down and I BF him at 11pm for usually 10-15 minutes and then put him down for the night...he doesn't always go down immediately, sometime it takes up to an hour, but then he is down for a good 6 hour stretch. HTH.

Sorry for those of you with in-law problems....it doesn't make it easy!

cr8zy- Sorry about the constipation and colic...if it makes you feel better I read that it usually clears up by aboug 3 months old so you're already in the home stretch. As for working out, I started last Monday and I'm doing 30 minutes a day...just trying to get over the hump to start the weight loss again.

weight loss - speaking of, I know alot of us lost our initial chunk of weight and then kind of stalled...I wanted to let you all know that in the 1 week I added a 30/day workout, I've gotten over the hump and lost another 4 lbs! I initially lost 20 lbs of the 45 lbs gained in the first few weeks PP and then stopped there...I am down to 30 lbs lost and 15 to go at 8 weeks PP. And just so you know, I haven't given up my nightly bowl of ice cream or changed my diet at all...just added the workouts.

For Patrick, except for the 6 hour stretch at night he feeds every 2 1/2 - 3 hours the rest of the day.

cluster feeding - Lauren normally feeds every 2-3 hours and from 6-10pm she feeds every hour. They aren't full feedings and she initiates them.

I've still been waking Lauren every 4-5 hours at night to feed, or else she'd normally go longer. I called her ped today and got the ok to let her go 7 hours!!!:D I feel so very lucky to have such a good sleeper!!

weight loss - I'm so glad to hear that w&wbm!! I was thinking of starting WW again today, but the girls on the parenting boards are advising me to wait a few more weeks due to BF. So now I can't decide. I don't want to jeopardize my supply, so maybe I'll just go back to healthy eating, I've given myself a lot of freedom during pg/pp. I've been back to walking, but need to be more consistent.

sling - I bought a hotsling before Lauren was born, but I haven't used it yet bc I tried it on and she seemed so smushed down in the bottom! I'm going to try it again after reading that's how it's supposed to be!

one handed typing, I'll try to do s/o's later!

I've been out of the loop for a few days, I figured I would start new on this new thread. Thanks for setting it up.

Cluster Feed: Aimee has done this on her own. We usually have a couple of times a day (evening) that she only goes about 1 hour in between feeds. All other times are 3-4 hours during the day. We get between 5.5 and 6.5 hours from her first sleep each night (around 10pm - 4am) and then we get two more three hour stretches.

Engorgement/mastitis - has anyone experienced this? I just have to share: On Sunday we were going to breakfast and so I pumped my right side and then thought it wasn't enough, started to pump my left and realized I didn't have time and stopped. Huge mistake. By the time we got to breakfast, my left breast was incredibly sore to the touch. By the time we were done eating, I felt like I had the flu. I was aching all over. By the time we got to the car I had the chills and by the time we got home I had a 101 fever and was throwing up. I figured I was in for a horrible 24 hour flu. Well, then I had DH look up breastfeeding to make sure it was still safe and he found the information on mastitis and that the effects are just like the flu. So, I grabbed my pump and with a throw up bucket in one hand and the pump in the other, I emptied my left side. Within 1/2 hour my chills were gone and within the hour my temp was back to normal. Absolutely amazing. Just wanted to share in case anyone who is breastfeeding gets flu symptons, think about your breast first and that might be it.

All else is going well. My leg is still numb, so working out is a problem. Aimee is doing great. She is up to 10 lbs already at 4wks.

My DH sister is coming into town this weekend with her newborn. Her baby boy is only 7 weeks older than Aimee so it will be fun to get them together.

Sorry for all of those having MIL issues. I have to say I am really lucky with mine. She keeps saying she is worried about coming over to much and doesn't want to wear out her welcome. We see them once or twice a week and it had been great.

charm - sorry about the MIL issues. I think it's awesome that the twins are both getting some breastmilk, btw! I couldn't imagine BF twins!!

clusters - every 3 hours during the day, every hour from 9-12. Wakes up again sometimes at 2, then 7, or at 5 and 7. He starts it. I just feed on demand.

doc - Jamie's appt is the 2nd. I usually nurse during the shots. DS barely fussed when I did it that way. Definitely Tylenol 30 min before too.

mastitis - had some trouble with this while J was in the hospital and I was pumping all the time, and with DS too. Definitely look out for this. It'll knock you for a loop. Best thing is to nurse, though it hurts like hell!

slings - I have a Nojo sling and can't get it to work very well. DS slumps low in it and looks uncomfortable. Sometimes he fusses as he's put in it and rejects it, but other times he falls asleep in it. I figure even though he looks like he's uncomfortable he likes being held close, like he was in the womb. I think my DH does better with the sling. Maybe the sling works better with people with longer torsos?? My friend has the Mayawrap and she says it works really well for her... I'll look up the hotsling to see how different it looks from the Nojo...

MIL issues - UGH! I do think that we need to have our DH be firm and mediate these situations. I guess it doesn't help if your DH doesn't want to rock the boat, though, and step up on your behalf.

engorgement - I too have already experienced engorgement. I had the fever. I got it because I was trying to shorten the amount of time Kaito was feeding. He was initially a slow eater and was taking an hour and 20 minutes to feed. So on my doctor's recommendation I tried to shorten the feedings and that's when I got engorged. I'm back to feeding on demand and with Kaito a more efficien eater and with me allowing him to take a bit more time, the issues have resolved. But yes, it is incredibly painful. I took some Motrin to help relieve the pain. brink - why is your leg numb?

bottle feeding not going well - I spoke too soon last time. My DH was up feeding Kaito 3 oz. of EBM for ONE HOUR!! I'm not up to watch what my DH is doing but is anyone else experiencing this?? DH says that DS doesn't seem to suck hard enough, that it's not that DS is falling asleep at the bottle...

hisdaffodil i can't imagine bf'ing twins either! i usually do it one at a time and only once or twice a day. seriously, i don't know how bf'ing twinmamas do it. bf'ing one is hard enough.

MILs i really shouldn't complain that much about mine... i know others have it waaayyyy worse than me. she does have good intentions and dh and i have recently figured out what motivates her odd behavior (read: intense passive-aggressiveness). luckily, i have the most awesomest ;) mom in the world.

Brink - Awww!! Finally a baby with more hair than Ava :) Do you get asked constantly about your heartburn while preggo?? :)

MIL's - Fortunately I do not have too many issues with MIL. I have two of them though (Dh's mom and stepmom) Both have thier good and bad points (so do I though he he). What has been annoying is her constant "suggestions". She likes to constantly mention things like "don't do this or do that bc..." and then she says, just some suggestions, you are the mom  You guys have it much worse though!!

So how about it snowed today. In Pittsburgh. Give.Me.A.Break!

slings -Thanks for posting the picture. If yours is right, then I think mine might be too small and that is why Henry hates it. But then again he seems really different than many babies here as he loves to be put down. Honestly, he will start fussing when I'm holding him because he wants to be put down.

MIL issues - Mine is generally very sweet. But she has really hurt DHs feelings as she hasn't been to visit yet. She and her DH spend the winters in our town and the summers up north. They didn't make plans to come down even a few weeks early to see our baby. The will be down the first week in Nov.

engorgement - Actually I feel worried as I don't really think my breasts feel full anymore. Henry seems to be getting enough, but having a phyical feeling of fullness was comforting in a way.

sleeping/cluster feeding--Henry initiates eating at 6,7, and 8. Then we usually put him down at 9:30. He chose the time...and coincidently I read in a book that babies this age usually choose to go down at this time. Then as they get older to move their bed time earlier.

shots So I guess I am the only one that isn't doing them on schedule? He has his 2 mo today (even though he is only 7 weeks) and I am going to delay.

So Alex was a bit fussy over the last 24 hours - which maybe is because of the shots. She definitely slept A LOT yesterday. But she's also been smiling - so she can't feel that bad, right?

Random question, but I find it so difficult to figure out the dosage on the medicine dropper because of the air bubbles! Is there a trick to this?

I can't believe how much HAIR some of your babies have - seriously something must have been in the water when we conceived:) Well, not here because Caitlin only has a little mullet in the back:D

shots So I guess I am the only one that isn't doing them on schedule? He has his 2 mo today (even though he is only 7 weeks) and I am going to delay.

Nope, you are not the only one!

MIL's - I don't have one anymore, but if I did DH would be the one to set the boundaries just like I do with my family!

engorgement - My bbs only feel really full occasionally now. Caitlin slept for almost 6 hours last night and they felt full, but not uncomfortable. I am actually glad because the fullness makes me worry about a plugged duct etc.

slings - I have a Nojo sling and can't get it to work very well. DS slumps low in it and looks uncomfortable. I think my DH does better with the sling. Maybe the sling works better with people with longer torsos??

Kay - this is my exact problem too with the NoJo - with all of that padding I just can't get a good fit, but DH does great with it and used it for months when DS was little. I love my New Native but Caitlin is almost getting too big for it - not sure what I want next.

Brink - I had a short bout with mastitis over the weekend also - felt like crap Sat night, bb was red etc. I drank a TON of water, fed and pumped from that side for 24 hours and rested alot. Felt better by Sun afternoon. Glad that you are better and didn't need antibiotics - they are so hard on the babies tummy!

cluster feeding - Caitlin eats around 6:30 and again from 8-9:30pm. I try to keep her up while she is eating and then she crashes hard at 9:30pm. She then sleeps until 7:30am with 2-3 feedings.

pumping - The best time to pump is right after the first morning feed - you have the most milk then. I am usually able to get 3 oz from one side in a few minutes. If I pump in the pm I get pracitcally nothing which is normal.

Random question, but I find it so difficult to figure out the dosage on the medicine dropper because of the air bubbles! Is there a trick to this?

Hmm - Are you squeezing the top really well before you put it back in the bottle? Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it without the bubbles. You can also buy a very small syringe which is what I use to give meds.

Hope that you all are having a great day!!!

Quick post - I can hear her fussing already.....

Kay2003 - During labor she must have been rubbing against my sciatic (sp?) nerve and caused it to become inflamed and now my right leg is mostly numb. They said it will eventually go down and should return to normal. They just don't have any idea how long it will take. Until then, I just walk around with a funny limp - very wierd.

Philnikki - I definitely get the h/b questions. I fall in line with the old tale because my h/b was horrible!

Acne - Aimee has a little, not sure if there is anything you can do about it.

Well, now she is full on crying, got to go.....

Interesting! I have two numb spots on my right thighs.. they don't hurt, and don't affect my walk though. I asked two doctors who said it probably had something to do with a nerve that was inflammed from all the weight I gained. I've never heard of anyone else having this - hope it goes away soon!

I thought that Lily had baby acne, but now I'm thinking that it may be eczema... It's all over her face/ears and is very rough. Poor thing! I read that evening primrose oil should clear it up, so I'm going to look for it today.

slings - I have an awesome ring sling that my mom made, but Lily isn't 100% sure about it. She will usually let me carry her for awhile, but gets antsy. The Baby Bjorn on the other hand, puts her right to sleep! We are going to try to do our errands in it today.

baby hair - Lily was born with a ton of hair! And I did have lots of h/b when I was pg... a coincidence I'm sure, but my grandma is like "ha! I knew it!"

Hope everyone has a good day - I'm going to try to be more productive (even though it is raining!). Yesterday I was a total bum and it really got me down :(

acne - Lauren just started getting this in the last few days. I've also read there's nothing you can do but wait it out. I do wash her face every morning (with water, did before the acne too) and that is seeming to help.

PrincessCrappy - I am so sorry! Drink tons of fluids, rest and nurse as much as you can on that side. Personally I would only nurse on that side and pump the other for awhile since your son can drain it better than the pump. If the soreness/redness on your bb doesn't go away by the morning, I would call the doc. Hope that you feel better.

Uggg - been there, done that with my son. I do think that Dr. Sears has some good info about how to deal with a high needs baby. It is SO tough - hang in there!

Caitlin is being such a turkey today. She will only nap when in my arms and moving - what's up with that?! I just always feel so guilty that I can't spend as much time with Aidan as I would like because I am rolling on the damn exercise ball instead!

Those of you that are bottlefeeding, how much is your little one taking?

I haven't been paying attention, I just feed him when he's hungry. But I knew with his 8wk appointment coming up, the Ped would want to know, so I kept a diary the past few days.

He is eating between 32-36oz a day!!!! About half that is EBM and the rest is formula. Maybe I should buy stock in Similac, geez!

Sabre - that is about what Ashley is eating...it does seem like a lot. I also really don't pay attention - I just feed her when she is hungry - I figure if I were over feeding her, she would be throwing up which she isn't.

So sorry for those of you suffering from Mastitis - I've heard it can be extremely painful.

I'm starting to think that Anthony may be a high needs baby. He almost perfectly matches Dr. Sears' description. He is just so draining and so demanding.

I am with you on this one - Ashley is also extremely needy.

She won't go down for naps at all and she is completely exhausted - when I force her to sleep, it takes hours to get her down and then she only sleeps for maybe 30 minutes. Granted, she is sleeping an average of 7 hours at night but she is so exhausted during the day and refuses to nap - and then we can't do anything. I took her to the mall yesterday and she was awful - cried and fussed the entire time because she was so tired...and she won't sleep AT ALL unless there is white noise - I think she is nosey - she is afraid she will miss something if she closes her eyes.

Hubby is working all the time - 7 days a week leaving the house around 8 and coming home between 8-10 - and then he is too exhausted to help - it is really starting to wear on me and p*ss me off. He has been in business for himself for over 2 years - I feel he should have his sh*t together by this point and not need to work all these hours. I feel like a single parent most days.

Sabre

KimAnthony is the same way, he is so afraid that if he falls asleep, he'll miss something. I promised him that we're not that exciting and he won't miss a thing! He tends to nap well in the morning, but the afternoon is spent crying because he's overtired.

Nice to know my child isn't the only piggy!;) My daughter never did eat very much and we had issues because she wouldn't gain weight. Anthony is the exact opposite, I bet he's going to be about 12lbs at his 8wk visit!

Kim - Count me in with being p***** at Dh lately. He has had to fill in for the postmaster this week, and he is having other supervisors call off and had to fill in for them. I feel bad that he has had so much stress at work, but serioulsy I don't need him acting like he is the one with so much on his plate.

So my typical day is:
4:30a rise and shine (awoken by Miss Ava)
6:30 leave for the dacare
6:45-7:15 - Walk around the mall (where her daycare is..its the only excercise I get)
7:30 leave daycare and head to work
5:00 leave work
6:00 get home after running errands
6-7:30 make dinner, eat dinner, clean house up
7:30-8:30 give ava bath, give her nightime bottle
8:30 put Ava down for the night
8:30-9:30 get a shower and get ready for the following day
9:30-10:30 make bottles, pay bills, pick out Ava's outfit for the following day, make sure hubbys cell phone is charged, make sure he has cash in his wallet, etc.
10:30-4:30 sleep (and thank god Ava lets me do this!!!)

It just gets me frustrated when hubbys schedule looks like this:

2am-3am get ready for work
3am-1:00p work
1p-6p lay around with the baby, nap, and play playstation (Madden 2006 at the moment)
6p-7:30p eat and play some more
7:30-8:30 help with bath and feeding
8:30 sleep

sheesh. The thing is, he doesn't see it that way. He is so obsessive about his sleep, and what he does not realize is that I don't get much sleep either and I have to drive 2hrs a day in a commute, work all day, do ALL of the errands, pay ALL of the bills, and take care of getting Ava's clothes, bottles, etc. ready for the day on top of it all. Why are men always so blind to what their wives do everyday????????

How long does one typically last? Katherine has been eating more and fussing more since last Saturday  . It's almost been a week and I think she's just experiencing a growth spurt but it seems to me like a loooong time to go through one?!?

Most morning and late evenings she's eating nearly every 1 - 1.5 hours and only napping once in the afternoong (used to sleep much more in day) . She's been pretty fussy during the evenings and when we try to soothe her it turns out 95% of the time she wants to eat. She's a pretty good sleeper - most nights I get four hours, then a feeding and then 2-3 more hours out of her. Although, since Sat, she's been up at night every three hours on a dime.

Is it possible she's going through a week long growth spurt? Any ideas when this will this stop? I'm wondering if she's jsut entered a new fussy stage of her life or if I can attribute to a possible spurt...

ETA: She'll be six weeks old on Monday.

Growth spurts last 1-2 days...seeing this I'd say that your baby is just being fussy. Fussiness peaks at 6 weeks of age, and it'll get better. Courtney was so fussy right around then I thought she had colic because I could pinpoint when she was going to pitch a fit. Now at 9 weeks, she's much less fussy when she's alert and more into looking around and seeing the world around her.

The first 6 weeks are the worst, and then it gets better.

Just when I think I've got this mom thing down, Henry changes his ways! Up until this week he was such a good napper (at home). But he would sleep from about 2-5 every day giving me time to get things done. Just when I get used to that he decides that he doesn't want to nap that long. This week his longest nap has been an hour. I guess it is just part of growing and being awake more?
And when he is awake, I still struggle with what to do. I can't entertain him the entire time (or should I?) but I feel guilty just leaving him laying around. He seems content to do that, but what if I'm depriving him of needed stimulation to grow into a smart kiddo?

I truely worry about everything! :)

I don't feel bad about leaving Caitlin somewhere alone for a bit as long as she has something to look at and listen too. Here are some of the things she does when she is awake:

-wear her in the Bjorn for 10-15 minutes while I get the mail, pay bills, water plants, do laundry etc
-lay in her crib and look at her Symphony in Motion Mobile and listen to the music
-sit in the bouncy seat next to the mirror and listen to music
-sit in the carseat outside while Aidan and I play - she loves to look at the trees
-lay under her activity mat - this has become a new favorite as she is starting to try and bat at things above her head
-tummy time
-sit with Aidan and I while we read - I try to use different voices and they both like it

I truely worry about everything!
This is just the beginning;)

The first 6 weeks are the worst, and then it gets better.

Yup - then it seems to get ALOT better around 3 months.

I agree - plus after a true growth spurt, your baby will often have a day or two right after where he/she sleeps alot.

Kim and nikki - Sounds like it is time for your DH's to spend a whole day alone with your kids - seriously, they will figure out pretty damn fast how hard and exhausting it is. I did this when Aidan was 3 months old and boy did DH shape up after that! Also I find that I need to ask/tell DH specifically what I need or else he doesn't get it.

Hope that you all have a great weekend:)

Hi all,

We have had a particularly busy week but all is good...Patrick had his shots today and did GREAT!! Didn't cry at all!!! He's up to 11 lbs, 8oz and 23" (he's 50% for each). He is so alert and the doctor was shocked about how strong his neck muscles are and how he looks like he is about to roll over already...

Well, I posted the other day how great he was sleeping and that night he didn't go down to sleep until 3:30am!!! But then last night he slept from midnight - 7:30am and then again from 8-9:30am! I have no clue...he's a great sleeper some nights he just wants the party to start at midnight.

As for putting them down, I have a hard time with this too but it's the only way to get things done...Patrick LOVES his activity gym too so I leave him there or in the crib looking at the mobile and stripes on the bumpers and wall. He also likes to stare at our big screen tv so I think I'll pop in a Baby Einstein movie this weekend.

Our pediatrician told me today to start introducing formula for 1 bottle a day because I will have to start weaning him after 3 months to prepare for me to go back to work when he's a little more than 4 months old. I was kind of surprised at that...anyone else get that advice? Patrick will be 9 weeks old on Monday.

alisonco thanks for that list of things you do with caitlin. i always feel so weird about just leaving the kiddos in their rockers even if they seem content do so. there is a toy bar on it and they look at the toys, but still...

they still aren't all that interested in the playmat except for the mirror which zoe loves (vain girl!). jake hates tummy time. so instead we do it on my chest. he loves that and does really well. i just learned that zoe is pretty fascinated with her symphony in motion mobile so she's checking that out every now and then. reading puts them right to sleep.

anybody's babies starting to show interest in the tv? zoe has and i'm not real excited about that. she's like a zombie when she watches. so now i'm turning her away from it when i notice her starting to watch. not a big fan of babies watching tv, personally.

ETA: just got these (http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/product.do?pid=3229880320036&cid=6269) for jake & zoe and i'm in love. perfect for playing and sleeping.

I'm afraid to say it and put a jinx on the whole thing, but Aimee has been sleeping wonderfully. She's not quite 5wks old and she has slept for 7 hours the last three nights. She goes to bed around 11pm-midnight and sleeps until 6 or 7am. Then I feed her and she goes down for another 4 hours. Again, now that I've said this I probably won't get any sleep for days.......

TV Time - I feel guilty too, but she really does like it. Sometimes when she is really fussy, I lay her on the sofa and she turns her head and watches tv. It's the only thing that calms her. I figure it's just brain stimulation at this point, so why feel guilty. I'm trying to spend other quality time with her talking and singing, so if I can find a balance, I'm happy (although still guilty).

SIL is coming tonight from AZ with her 12 wk old. Can't wait to get them together tomorrow morning. Should be a fun weekend.

TV time - YUP! Alex loves it. When I'm desperate I'll put her in the bouncy chair and let her watch Baby Bach - or SOMETIMES when I'm REALLY desperate - whatever is on. But I agree - too much tv watching is not a good thing!

Sleeping - Alex has been pretty good! She usually goes from about 12 - 7am (give or take), although she did have a few nights when she woke up every 3 hours. Then she'll sleep for a couple more hours in the morning in her swing, and I nap on the couch.

She is growing so fast, eats lke a little piggy, smiles up a storm and is starting to take interest in her toys. Her favorite thing to do is to look at herself in the mirror on her playmat. I too feel guilty about leaving her in her bouncer seat or swing too much but she is happiest there and I do make sure she has something interesting to look at and/or listen too. I read to her everyday for about 30 minutes and she really seems to like that. She also seems to like listening to the Baby Einstein symphony cd's. I have a couple of baby einstein dvd's on my order list with netflix to see if those might be interesting for her...

MIL's - Mine hasn't been a PITA but she is so clueless when it comes to a baby. How she raised two sons, I have no idea. DH wonders how he made it to age 18.... Needless to say, neither of us want her alone with Addy for any length of time.

Cr8zyforaf - I can relate to your feeling like a single parent comment. My DH is working on a project out of town and he has been home one day on the weekend and one evening during the week for the past three weeks (before that it wasn't much better either!). I finally see light at the end of the tunnel because he will be finished in a couple of weeks but for the lack of a better word: it really sucks. I feel like I didn't sign up for this part of it - it is really hard to be the one and only 24/7. I must say though that he is really hurt that he isn't home - he has missed out on so much so I can't be resentful but I can still complain about it! Anyhow, just hang in there and know your not alone.

Upromise.com - You guys probably already know about this but I just discovered this website. I had heard about it but never signed up until a couple of weeks ago. I already have over $20.00 in my account (guess I am shopping too much  )

I am being paged....

Fly-by post as the toddler is rambunctious tonight.

TV - Not Jamie's thing yet. He loves looking out of windows and his swing, so that's where he goes when we need to do things. DS-1 loves TV way too much... I wish I'd never gotten him started, although he has learned a lot and his vocab has doubled since he really got interested at 2. He watches Dora and Blues Clues and Diego. And he has every Baby Einsteine. That's pretty much all he watches, but I think he still gets too much. But like I said, it's helped him out with his words and recognition skills, a lot.

Upromise - DS-1 has an account, and we invited family/friends to join up and contribute for him. Surprisingly, a co-worker did, and that guy, I dunno what he buys, but he's racked up more for DS than us! That reminds me, I need to get my mom on it. She didn't have internet back then so didn't get hooked up.

I can only imagine what college will cost in 16-18 years!

so glad people are posting about what they are doing with their babies. I was feeling guilty about sticking DS in the swing or vibrating chair while i ran around the house. I am trying to read him a book or two every day and just telling him what I'm doing while I carry him around the house...

philnikki, cr8zyforaf - there are books on what you've written about. One that I read that was so good (and enraged me, really) was called The Second Shift. It's about how working women end up doing a second shift while their husbands sit on the couch. Women do so much more work than men. then the women and men rationalize this "division of labor." Worth a read, but a warning that it won't make you feel good that things haven't changed since the 70s! I think it's good advice to let your DH take care of your babies for agood chunk of the day!

Hunter needs to be entertained all day long, so when I need a break I :

1. Put him in his crib while he looks at his new mobile (symphany in motion) since his other one broke after just 2 months ( don't buy the music in motion mobile and if you did beware....ours stopped turing, but still played music)!!!!

2. Let him swing, which he LOVES and he usually falls asleep for an hour in it.

3. Put him on his play mat, which doesn't last too long

4. Put him in his bouncy seat and pop in baby einstein-LOVES IT!!

And when I am all done I try and read him a book or take him for a walk.
My MIL will be watching him and she can't hold him all day so I wanted to get him used to not being held all day and he is doing well.

I start work on Wednesday :( I am terrified to leave him. My MIL hasn't watched him for more than 2 hours at a time and refuses to carry him down any stairs (she lives above me) Sheesh. At least I will be working from home 3 days/week!

I wanted to say how cute everyone's babies are!! What a good looking bunch! :D

Just wanted to share a couple of Halloween pics from this weekend.
http://images.snapfish.com/34539%3A2%3B23232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2339%3D5%3A6%3D3%3 A%3B%3DXROQDF%3E2323%3B99845736ot1lsi
And we went to a costume party. My DH was "Dog" Chapman, bounty hunter. http://images.snapfish.com/34539%3A2%3B23232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2339%3D5%3A6%3D3%3 A%3B%3DXROQDF%3E2323%3B99845747ot1lsi

Baby entertainment Thanks for sharing your ideas, our routine is pretty similar and I'm glad to know I'm doing ok! We have decided not to let Henry watch any TV or Videos which makes it a bit hard. I also ordered a book off amazon that will hopefully have some ideas as well.

husbands I'm really sorry for those of you that are having issues. I can't imagine how much harder that would make things. Nikki, your schedule is greuling! Wow girl! My suggestion would just continue to talk to them and be specific about what you need. Hopefully things will get better.
We own our own business and this is our slow time, so DH has been working a reduced schedule which has been so nice.

QOTDFor those of you with the bedrooms upstairs. How do you handle naps and diaper changes? So far we have a "portable" changing pad that we bring downstairs in the mornings and do all changes while downstairs there. He naps in his swing downstairs, or on the floor on a blanket. He has never napped in his crib, (but I've only tried a few times). How are you guys handling things?

wildcat

qotd - We have a side-to-side split and spend our time in the family room which is 2 floors below the bedrooms. However, we go up to the nursery for all diaper changes. As far as naps, her morning nap (which is the only one that I've noticed she always takes) is usually in her bouncy chair or her swing while I do things around the house and shower. Any other naps are usually taken while I'm taking my walk and she's in the Bjorn, or in her carseat/stroller while I'm running errands, or in my arms:). She took her first nap in her crib this weekend..she loves looking at her Symphony in Motion mobile and I put her in there while I showered and when I got out she had falled asleep! Once she has a more of a routine, I might try to put her in her crib. We also have a packnplay in our family room (in addition to the one in our bedroom she sleeps in at night) that we will occasionally use.

qotd i have a changing table in our family room which is pretty much where we spend our days. actually, it's a card table with a changing pad and diapering supplies on it. for naps, it's on the playmat or their bouncy seats. once they get a bit older though, naptime will be in their cribs upstairs.

philnikki

QOTD - We have a townhouse, and we use the nursery when we are upstairs and we use our changing table in our pack in play when we are downstairs. There is also a nice bassinet function (where you can raise the height of the floor) in ours, so she sleeps there too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!! I think we might try a baby Einstein DVD. Someone in the August mommies thread posted about a study that said that it would cause overstimulation. Personally, I don't beleive in alot of things like that, but I thought I would mention it if anyone was interested.

Ava is just now starting to get interested in her toys too. She loves her mobile. And she also loves staring at our ceiling fan. I swear, when I get ready in the morning, she is good for a good 20 minutes if I just lay her in the center of the bed and let her stare at the ceiling ;) lol She talks to it and everything! I guess I should be concerned hehe

Beachbum - LOVE the costumes!!!

Solongtogo What a cute peapod lily makes!

Did anyone bring their little one trick or treating? We are waiting a couple years for that.

Hunter slept in his crib for the first time last night. We took it harder than he did. He slept from 9-2:30 and 3-6. He looked so little in the crib, but so comfy.

One more day and I am back at work-can I cry already? Figures, my last day at home and Hunter has to get his shots.

I'm way behind so I'll tyr to catch up the last couple of days.

QOTD - we have a tri-level. We learned with DS not to bother with changing pads and such. We just change him on a blanket on the couch or floor or bed or whatever's available. We leave a blanket and a wipes bucket and a stash of diapers on each level. Upstairs he sleeps in his crib or our bed for naps, in the middle he sleeps in the swing, and in the bottom level, he sleeps in his playpen.

cr8 - What a big grin!! She's so adorable!

All the halloween babies are soooo cute!! And reminded me that I totally forgot to put Jamie's My First Halloween sleeper on today! I spaced it. He did get his costume made though. He looked more like a shapeless pile of feathers with a beak than a parrot, but everyone still thought he was cute. DS1 wasn't sure about his, kept taking pieces of it off so that he was practically just in clothes (he was a pirate, Jamie was his parrot :D ). But it was cute, this was his first year that he kinda got it. He'd run to the door and bang on it and say "Tweet Tweet Tweet" and by the end he was saying "Twick Tweet." They'd give him a candy, he'd say Thank you and run off. My only problem was that at first, he tended to try to run into their house when the door was opened!! He ran all the way into one guy's house and hopped up the stairs and onto his couch!!! Very embarassing.

Entertainment - Oh another suggestion. DS1 had this huge poster of black and white pictures and he would lay on his boppy and stare at that forever, He loved it. Sicne black and white shows up better for them in the early months, try that. As far as Einstein, while we have them all and I love them, I didn't use them this early, although Jamie seems to be responding to the music now when I play them for DS1.

2nd shifters - Totally feel you. I work 8-5, then come home and have the kids alone from 5-2am! Then DH comes home and sleeps, so it's a toss-up over who gets up if one of them cries. Usually me because of BF. But since it's currently a 2nd job that has him not helping, I can't complain much. Luckily, the job ends in a couple of weeks! But with DS, he was as described, came home, ate dinner, then flopped till bedtime. I just learned to force it on him. I go over to him on the couch and plop the baby on his chest and go into the office and read or whatever it is I need to do.

QOTD - Our master is upstairs and she is still sleeping in the bassinet, so we change her up there in the night and then in the nursery during the day. Most daytime naps are taken on the couch or in the bouncy.

Halloween - we went over to DH parent's house and passed out candy there. Here she is in her costume.

We had a great first Halloween with Lauren, we just hung out at home and passed out candy, I can't wait for her first Trick or Treating in a few years! Here are a few pics!

This one is picking out our pumpkin (or shamelessly using this place for a picture opp, but we bought a pumpkin!)

http://www.billyandashlee.com/gallery/albums/wpw-20051101/normal_IMG_1321.jpg

QOTD - When did your baby start smiling (on purpose!)? In the last 4-5 days, Lauren has had a few 1/2 smiles that seem to be on purpose, but aren't the full out smiles she has in her sleep. I still can't decide if these are for real or not. She's 5 weeks old today, so I know the "for sure real ones" will be coming soon, but was just curious when everyone got their first ones?

sleeping/changing--DS sleeps in his swing during the day and gets changed in the pack n play on the main floor. At night he sleeps in his crib upstairs and gets changed on his changing table. I have two diapering stations set up--one in his room and one in the pack n play.

smiles--I think Alex started truely smiling around 6 weeks. He would smile at appropriate times to hearing my voice, feeling my touch etc.

Smiles - Aimee is 5wks 2 days and we are getting some smiles out of her. I've been getting them for the last few days. Not consistent, but they are there.

All the halloween babies are so cute. I have to upload pictures - she was a flower but hated it.

I am dealing with a horribly fussy baby - she is gassy and refuses to sleep unless held, and even then she only sleeps in 30-45 minute clips. Is anyone else dealing with this? She went from sleeping 6-7 hours a night to not sleeping at all. I've called the doctor and they said there is nothing they can do for gas. I feel bad because I don't even enjoy her at this point - I want to go back to work just to get away from her...god, I hate to even say that. I had my mom come up today to take her and when my mom left, I felt like crying - I didn't even want to hold her.

Bath - I give her a bath every other day - and wipe her down with a wet cloth on her off days. I think every other day would be fine. I also lotion her up twice a day - she seemed to have some dry spots.

And I also read in my Parents magazine that it is good to give our babies some time to themselves - it encourages them to be more independant and learn to sooth themselves - so I don't think we should feel guilty about it. I usually put her in the swing or lay her in her crib - she loves looking at her mobile (it has birds that twirl around - not sure which one it is).

As far as changing/sleeping during the day - we have two levels - so I have a pack and play with a changing table that I use during the day (or if I am lazy - I change her on the couch with a changing pad under her) and she usually either sleeps on me, in her swing, or in in boppy.

Henry is the same age as Ashley. FWIW, he has had a really fussy week as well. I'm hoping its just a phase. He has been a really good sleeper and napper until just this week. I've really had to struggle to get him to nap. I can't remember if you are BF, but you might want to think about your diet just to be sure that its not something you are eating. I figured out that H has a hard time with dairy, it hurts his tummy.

I'm glad to hear this. H really seems to enjoy his "alone" time, but I've felt like a bad mom for not interacting with him constantly. I can put on some music and he will happily lay by himself for 30 min.

Happy belated birthday, cr8zyforaf :)

Baths - I give Ava a btah every night. Its part of her nighttime routine and she really loves. She kicks and giggles and smiles the whole time she is in the tub! I put lotion on her afterwards and she is just hte happiest baby in the world. Then she gets her bottle and goes to bed. I keep thinking I am going to jinx my self. I have the best baby right now. She STTN and is pretty generally content.

She has a little cold right now though. She is stuffy and has these little baby coughs and sneezes. Poor thing :( I hated leaving her today at daycare bc she was sick. I am giving her Tylenol, and awaiting a call back from my ped. for any additional instructions.

Kim - So sorry sweetie. Ava has had her moments of fussiness with gas, but never all day liek that. I would be acting the same way your are though...you really need a break. And I am sure you have tried this, but have you given her Mylicon??? Also -- is it more constipation?? I know that when Ave had consitaption she was really fussy like that when she was about 3-4 wks old. We had her on lactulose up until this past week and that did the trick. HTH

Morning all! I'll see if I can get to a few qotd's!

smiles - Lily def. smiles, although I would have to say that it seems mostly random still - she is just 5 weeks, so I think this will hopefully change soon? She does smile shen I turn on her mobile! Although the damn thing only runs for like, 3 minutes

bath - we bathe her every other day... I don't think that she is real dirty, but she likes it!

Kim - oh hon, I feel for you! Have you checked out the "babies with high needs" thread? Maybe those ladies will have some good suggestions?

We all have colds here & my house is a freaking disaster! DH just went back to work - he'll be gone for 4 days - so I am hoping that I can keep it together! Lily was SUPER fussy yesterday evening, but then slept pretty well. We still have ZERO semblance of a routine down... not sure how bad this is at this stage.

Hope everyone is well!

:) Thanks. He really made up for being a preemie but he is a little shrimp though on weight--his height is good but he's only like the 2nd or 3rd percentile for weight. The kid would rather do anything BUT eat. He eats a few bites then tells me "all done" and is off to play again. Alex eats like a pig in comparison to him. Shows how different two kids can be. I think Alex is probably half Colin's weight already.

Question- how much eye contact does your baby make with you? I thought babies this age (six weeks on Friday) were supposed to love looking at faces- Naomi will glace at my face, but most of the time she'll then look away really quickly. Is this normal? Maybe I'm just being paranoid...

Smiles- Naomi isn't really smiling yet (except in her sleep). Once in a while she gets close, but not quite anything we could call a real purposeful smile.

Kim- Ugh, I'm so sorry you're going through that! Every day or so Naomi will have an hour to an hour and a half of gassy SCREAMING - it's awful. I hope she -and you- have an easier time soon!

Bath- We'll bathe her twice a week. Going to start doing it more often though because she really seems to like it (so do we! :) )

Wildcat- Lauren is sooooo cute!

Rash question - Aimee has developed a horrible rash on her face and neck in the last two days. It is really red, bumpy and just looks painful. Any suggestions on something to put on it? I'm washing all of her bedding and will start bathing her everyday, any other suggestions?

Eye Contact - Aimee makes good eye contact (5 1/2 wks) and will stare at me while I am singing. Sometimes she will stare at other things and not at me, but that just depends on her mood. I wouldn't worry about it. I think they are all different in their own way. There are plenty of times she doesn't want to be held. She cries while I'm holding her and then only calms down when I lay her down and leave her alone (makes me feel horrible sometimes). She also doesn't like her hands touched and other things that I think are different from the "norm".

smiling & faces - Kaito is almost 6 weeks old and I've definitely noticed happy smiles from him in the past week. As far as eye contact, he does look at me or others but not for a really long time. It sort of seems to depend on what he's interested in. If there are other objects or light or something else, he'll also focus on other things.

bath - we have been giving him a bath twice a week, but I think I might start giving him a bath every other day soon. I need to be more regular about washing his hands and face every day...

jobs pixiecat, there are aspects of my job that I miss and aspects I don't miss. Unfortunately I'm supposed to be doing some work while I'm away and I haven't been able to get my hands on that with the baby. Sometimes I wish I had a job where it was clear that I was on maternity leave and couldn't do anything...

cr8zyforaf - If my baby was doing what your baby is doing, I'd be feeling the same way. I hope the old sleeping patterns return...

have fever - It's really odd. I had a 101.5 fever yesterday night and a lower fever tonight. No other flu symptoms. I hope it doesn't develop into the flu. This leads to my question for you:

Have you gotten sick and then passed it on to your babies?

Kay2003

I guess there is alot going around cause Hunter seems to be sick too. He has a runny nose, coughs and is SO cranky. Could this be a side affect from his shots? I think I will call the Dr today if it doesn't get better by this afternoon.

My first day back wasn't that bad, but I ran to my baby when I got home and didn't put him down all night-is that a bad thing? Today I am at home without a sitter and trying to manage work...not easy with a crying baby. My MIL will be watching him later today.

Rashes - My ped. told us to put Aquaphor on a rash Ava had right after she was born. We think it was the pink dye in Johnsons baby lotion that gave it to her. We have since switched to the dye free kind and have had no problems.

sick babies - Ava has her first cold. It just makes me so sad :( She seems to be ok, but her little coughs and sniffles just break my heart in two!! Arg. Being a mommy is hard!!!!

Zach has a cold too. It's just sniffles though and he seems to be fine otherwise. I had it too, but my DH got it the worst.

This mommy has to confess...I only give Zach a bath about once a week. :o

Zach didn't wear a costume for Halloween, but he did wear a cute outfit a friend let us borrow. (Unfortunately he had a blowout in it so I had to take it off sooner than I wanted to.)

Hi ladies!
I go in for my post-partum check up today... can't believe it has been (almost) 6 weeks! Seems like she was just born...

rashes - ugh, Lily has had a red rash on her face since she was about 2 weeks old. We took her to the ped who diagnosed her with "heat rash" in about 3 seconds. I'm just not sure... poor thing, her darling little face looks bad :(

colds - I have one and gave it to DH... I think Lily has a touch of it, but doesn't seem to be as bad as us! (yet, yikes!)

eye contact - Lily is just starting to do this & it is still inconsistent... she has started to smile at me a little more, which I love. Makes up for her "witching hour" in the evening!!

mandy - glad you survived your first day back!

Thanks for the advice on the rash. She still has it today (3 days in a row). Someone else told me to get hydricortizone (sp?) in the 1/2% solution. We are going to get some today and see how that works. I guess it is OTC but you have to ask the pharmacist for it.

Well, we are just about to head out for our first trip with Aimee. It has been three months since we have been to our cabin and are dying to get up there. So, today she gets a three hour car ride and her first night away from home. We are coming back on Saturday, so just a short trip. Hopefully this won't mess up her sleeping patterns and we regret it!

Have great weekends......

Does anyone else have a baby that

1. Does not burp
2. Does not spit up

????

Even the daycare ladies finally asked me today if we could get her to burp for us and we said no! She has spit up 3 times in her 10 weeks of life. I call that pretty infrequent! And she has not spit up at all in the past 6 weeks. Should I just count my blessings, or is there something wrong with her????

Nikki-I remember reading in one of the papers I got from my ped that babies don't actually have to burp. So my guess would be that Ava is fine. But I'm certainly no doctor.

Eye contact-Zach doesn't make a lot of eye contact. He'll look at us occassionaly, but he doesn't stare for long. He's too busy looking around at other stuff.

Anthony has gotten so nosey while he eats, that he turns his head every which direction and I have to try to keep up with him with the bottle! He ends up with his face covered in milk. Usually, the only time he makes eye contact is his bedtime feeding when we're all relaxed and just chilling in the dim light.

He goes to his 8 week appointment on Monday, I can't wait to see how big he is!

burps/spit up - nikki, I wouldn't worry. Ava must not take in much air when she eats or maybe it comes out the other end instead:D Caitlin does spit up but my son rarely did.

rashes - Caitlin still has major acne, but now I wonder if it is a rash. I wash all of our clothes in the same Free detergent and only wash her face with warm water. I hope it gets better soon because I want to do some pro pictures this month!

baths - Caitlin gets a bath on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday - same days DS gets his hair washed. She gets a washcloth "bath" every evening though.

eye contact - Yes for about 5 seconds or so.

smiles - YES - I love it! She smiles at me right after she nurses and when I say her name in funny voices.

All of the Halloween costume pictures are great - there is nothing cuter than a baby in a costume or a santa hat!

Caitlin is doing well although she is being a pill today. She will not nap! She is in a great mood so I have no idea what is going on. She has also decided that 8:00pm is her bedtime and she cannot be woken up. It is nice to have alone time in the evening with DH but I just wish I could wake her briefly to eat before I go to bed. So now she sleeps from 8-11:30, 12-4 and 4:30-7ish. Tomorrow is my PP check up and then Saturday I am getting a haircut and a pedicure:)

Have a great day!

What are you guys doing for Tummy Time? and for how long? H just really seems to hate it. I try to interact with him (obviously) but he mostly just squirms and cries. How can I make it better? Do you guys have any tips?

Have any of you started the mini-pill? How's it going, any side effects? I got a prescription today but just really feel non-commital about starting.

One other question (boy I'm just full of them today). DH remembers reading that we needed to be really careful about getting water in Henry's ears. Does anyone know when we can quit being so careful?

Real quick post...all the babies are so cute.

Tummy time - she hates it. I was just reading an article on how important tummy time is once they hit three months - it will encourage crawling and exploring...I really don't push it now, but I will in a few weeks.

I am going back on the regular pill - not breastfeeding...I am just waiting for my period to show up. Haven't had s*x yet - isn't that awful...I keep forgetting to buy condoms..and I am not letting DH near me - I don't need an opps baby.

eye contact - yes - all the time - although sometimes she is more interested than others. She does smile at me all the time and giggles just a little bit. One game I love to play with her is trying to get her to make the noises I make - like Ohs and EEs - she is pretty good at it and is so pleased with herself.

So, I went out and got some gripe water for the colic and gas - it seems to have helped. We had three nights of not sleeping more than 1-2 hours - last night she slept for 9 hours  and the night before 7 - is that normal - I felt like I should wake her. She has her 2 month appointment on Monday - so I will ask then. I take her tomorrow for her two month photos...I hope she behaves!

Tummy time - he doesn't mind it most of the time. But when he fusses during it, I do tummy time against me, like propped up with his arms on my tummy and his body mostly on the bed, or lying totally on my chest.

solongtogo--what a great shot--it looks almost professional. :)

tummy time--haven't really been doing it other than putting him on my chest and letting him push up.

baths--me bad. once a week probably. He seems to hate it and with a 2 year old and being back at work FT well he's lucky he gets that.

sleep--alex did a great thing 3 nights in a row--5-6.5 hours for one stretch. Then the last two nights he wouldn't stay asleep for longer than 3.5 hours. Ugh. Mommy is so tired. I'm so glad tomorrow is Saturday and my parents will be around so I can hopefully catch a nap and they can watch the 2 year old.

minipill--I went on it 2 weeks ago. No side affects that I noticed (and didn't notice any last time).

tummy time - Lauren doesn't really seem to like it either. I'm lucky to do 5 mins a day and that's usually on my or DH's chest.

baths - We're on the twice a week schedule right now, but I might think about going every other day bc she enjoys it and we enjoy it adn she seems to sleep well after a bath (we do them right before bed time).

STTN - My ped gave us the ok to let her go 7 hours at a time, so I haven't been waking her up for the last few weeks. She generally goes to sleep around 9, gets up at 3:30 for 30mins to eat and diaper change and then she either gets up again at 6:30 for the same and goes back down until 9:30 or so, or she'll get up at 7-8 for the day. However, last night she slept from 9:30 - 4:45!! Then she went back down at 5:30 until 7:15. Not bad! And of course at 8:45 she's sleeping again, I'll probably get another few hours of sleep out of her! I know I'm very lucky in getting so much sleep with a newborn!

cr8zyforaf - could it be a growth spurt? I'm so sorry you're having a rough time:(, have you talked to your pediatrician or LC? How much does she eat during the day? Our LC advised that if we can get her 8-12 feedings in during the day, she won't have to eat so much at night and will sleep longer. Lauren eats about 8-9 times during the day and then once at night and has since the beginning, and I assumed it was bc of our LC's advice.

burp/spitup - Nikki you are so lucky Ava has only spit up 3 times ever!!! Lauren was a week old when she spit up the first time and it was so much I thought she was vomiting!! She still does that on occassion, maybe 5 times her whole life. However, she spits up several times each day! As far as burping, I can't always get her to burp, DH seems better at it and my parents are even better. However, we can't always get her to burp, but that seems to be the times she spits up! I've read that babies don't have to burp, so I wouldn't worry about it as long as she doesn't seem to be bothered!

Smiles - Right after I asked that question, Lauren started smiling! We got her first small ones exactly at 5 weeks (Tuesday) and then her first really big, ear to ear ones yesterday!!! It's so adorable and kind of takes me by surprise when she does it bc I realize that she's actually interacting with me and not just listening to a crazy lady babble to her in crazy voices and faces!;)

QOTD - nap schedules - Does anyone's babies have a set nap schedule yet? Lauren doesn't and I didn't know if that's ok or when I should get her on one or if she'll just do it herself? She never wakes up at the same time, but 9 times out of 10, she'll get up, change diapers, eat, I'll wash her face/hands, lotion her up, change her clothes and then she's asleep within an hour or two of when she woke up and will be asleep for a few hours. Other than that, there's no other "gauranteed" nap during the day. Some days she seems to sleep all day and I have to wake her up to feed her, and then other days she's awake all day. She tends to be a little fussy in the evenings (as long as I feed her every hour though, she's ok), and I notice it's worse on the days that she hasn't slept much.

QOTD #2 - Professional pics - Now that the babies are 1-2.5 months old, I imagine some of us have had professional pics done. Does anyone care to share opinons of the places you went (assuming they're national) and your opinion? We took Lauren for her 2 week pictures to Picture People. I think the pictures are good, but were so expensive (IMHO). We got 5 8x10s, 12 5x7s, and 16 wallets for $250 and we probably should have bought more. I went ahead and made an appt for her 2month/Christmas pictures at Picture People, but haven't decided if we should go there or try somewhere else? I was wondering about the places like Target, JCPennys, Sears, etc.

Pro pics I take my kid to www.mcgreevymarksphoto.com for a 1st year package deal just to have someone else photograph my kid, but as DH and I are photographers as well, we do the majority of the pro pics ourselves. I have a few coupons and what not for picture people, and we're going to do that too, just to try them out, but from what I hear the picture people aren't all that. I've heard decent things about the photo thing at BRU, but honestly if you want good quality pictures and not you standard sears and jcpennys stuff, then go to a real pro photographer. Their prices are more expensive, but the overall quality and creativity is much better.

Solongtogo--A photographer!! You are holding out on us big time! :D How about some photo tips? I have a canon rebel, but can't seem to get close enough to get a "ear" shot etc. I have a standard 50mm lens. Is that just not going to cut it? Also, I have tried putting him by a window with lots of light, but even then my flash still wants to go off, unless it is direct sun coming in. When I use the "p" mode for no flash, I get a lot of blur. I switched to 800 speed film and that helped some...I also have a digital camera that I would prefer to use, but without the flash is is always blurry. Any other ideas? Your collage looks great btw.

Thanks for the affirmation on tummy time. I'm glad you guys are struggling too!

We haven't done any pro pics yet. I'm just afraid that he will be grumpy and it will be a waste. Additionally, I'm just worried about germs.
My SIL who lives in a metro area (unlike me) has "photo parties" at her house. They hire a photographer for the day and set up a backdrop and invite all their friends over (in timed increments) for a photo session. They seems to get much more natural and happier photos that way, and a good price from the photographer.

Naps He is spuratic still. He might fall alseep at 8 or 9 or sometimes not at all until 1. Around 2 he always takes an hour nap.

Solongtogo What beautiful pictures you took of Courtney. I find that my flas makes so many shadows and when I turn the flash off Hunter moves and the pic is blurry. I have a digital-any suggestions?

Professional pics We went to KMart for his 2 month pics cause at this point Hunter hates to sit still to get his pic taken. We're back from our trial run at our cabin. Aimee did great. She slept for most of the car ride in (3 hours) and we did great. She had a little difficulty sleeping one night, but we seem to be back on track.

Tummy Time - I must be a horrible mom, I don't do any tummy time unless she is resting on my chest during burping. I hadn't read that I was suppsed to be doing this for five minutes, three times per day. Guess we're gonna have to start.

Pictures - we went to BRU and did not have a great experience. I think the person we got was very new at photography and it took her forever to get Aimee "posed" and then she would adjust her camera and by that time Aimee had either fallen over or was crying. The whole experience took hours and was not worth it. It probably just depends on who you get taking the pictures..... we ended up just buying the cd for 74.99 and puting the pictures on-line and ordering through snapfish. Worked out better with pricing and then I have them going forward.

Wildcat - I could have written the exact same thing about Aimee's schedule. It sounds like our babies sleep almost exactly alike.

Hi everyone. :)
Zach had a gigantic poop blowout this morning. It went up his back, got on his arm, and all over the changing table as I was cleaning up! He got pretty mad with being wiped all over and being completely naked. I gave him a bath and that calmed him down after a bit. Then he fell asleep on the bathroom floor wrapped up in a towel. I did move him to his basinette and now he's awake in there. Ahhh, motherhood ;)

I'm asking because we usually use cloth diapers, but yesterday we were out and about all day so we used Pampers. We had 3 leaks out of the 5 diapers. I mean, I realize that if they always leaked this much there would be a revolt ;) but I also can't believe I'm this inept. :D
Anyway to answer my own question, we use cloth and have pee leaks maybe once every 2 weeks, and have had a poop leak 2x. DS is 9 weeks.

We've used Pampers Swaddlers, Target brand, and Luvs so far. We've had 2 poop leaks, and no pee leaks in 11'ish weeks.

Uh oh he just woke up, so much for posting much!

Leaks - We use Pampers Swaddlers and have had maybe 3 poop leaks and 3 pee leeks in 6 weeks. Someone told me that when you start having leaks (Lauren never had one until maybe 2-3 weeks ago) that it's a clue to go up a size in diapers. She's still in the newborns, so we tried a size 1 on her and it was HUGE!! The leg openings didn't even touch her legs! So, I guess we'll be in newborns for awhile longer!

Sandie - My DH got to experience his first poop blow-out yesterday, so I'm sure he sympathizes;).

Brink - That's great to know that Aimee has the same schedule!! I just need some affirmation that I'm not doing anything wrong or not doing something I should be...I don't think I've ever questioned myself so much until motherhood!

solongtogo - The collage is great, I'll have to see if I can get some pics together to send to you...thanks so much for the offer!!

I caught my first cold:(. DH had it last weekend and when I didn't have it last week, I thought I was off the hook...however, the sore throat started Friday afternoon and I felt like sh*t all weekend. I normally hate being sick over the weekend, but was so thankful this time bc it meant DH took DD off my hands except for feedings. Secretly I was glad bc it meant DH got more of a taste of what I do everyday and hopefully he gained some more respect;). Anyway, thank goodness Lauren is an awsome sleeper bc I got 10+ hours of sleep each night with just 1-2 30 minute feedings and I'm feeling SO MUCH better today!!

Leaks - We have had about 3 poop blow outs and 3 or 4 pee leaks in 11 weeks as well. We use Pampers Swaddlers....I have heard that the reg. Pampers have issues, so I thought about putting her in Huggies Supremes when she gets ready for 3's...I think we will be there soon!!!

solongtogo - Nope, not Bf'ing.

AF - Arg, this has been awful. It was so heavy this time!! And on top of it, it hurst like h**** to even use a tampon!!! I don't know if Phil is ever getting near me again! lol

We got Ava's Christmas pics yesterday!! Here they are!

NIkki What a nice looking family. And Ava cooperated so well!

Pampers I LOVE Swaddlers! I found that Huggies (any kind) are FAR worse than Pampers. I used trial diapers we received in the mail and Pampers Swaddlers are the best. Although-they could work differently for boys vs girls considering the "direction" of their pee LOL

wildcat I have a cold too! Isn't it so hard to take care of a baby when you are sick. I am actually less of a baby myself. You are so lucky lauren sleeps for 10 hours. I can only get 7 or 8 out of hunter. His sleeping through the night only lasted one night. Hope you feel better soon.

Today is my official full day of work-I only worked 3 hours last wed and from home the rest of the week. I am missing my little man, but he is w/ daddy. It makes me realize JUST how much I love my baby. Last night Hunter slept from 8-3:45 and then he was squirming and bit and since I was leaving for work I went in to see him. He must have sensed me cause he kind if woke up-but I took him out of his crib so I could hold him before I left! Am I a bad mommy-I didn't tell daddy. :o He usually wakes up at that time anyways (that's what I am telling myself)

Aimee went 9 hours in between feedings last night. Then she woke up at 6 this morning, fed for 6 minutes (usually it's 12) and went back to sleep and is still sleeping at 10:00! I keep going over and checking to make sure she is ok, but she seems to be fine. Tells me I'll be in for a day of cluster feeding later.

Blowout - we have had probably 5 or 6 pee leaks in 6 wks. We also use the Pampers Swadlers. Like randysmandy - we tried some of the sample diapers and didn't like the huggies brand.

So, for the last 4 or 5 nights, Aimee has gone all night (7 hours) without a wet diaper. I make sure that sometime in the morning I'm seeing pee, but isn't that unusual for a baby to go that long without having a wet diaper? Should I be concerned?

Lazy eye - I think Aimee has a lazy eye on her left side. There are a lot of times when she is tired that her left eye is closed half way and her right is open. I was talking with MIL last night and noticed that she has a lazy left eye. I asked her about it and she said that yes she did and that if they had known about it when she was little, they could have corrected it. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, could it be hereditary?

I gave Aimee a bath last night and thought I had burned her. I guess I usually have her in the tub and slowly fill the water. Well, last night the grandparents were over, so I thought it would be fun to have them watch her get a bath (amazing what we find fun these days). I filled the tub and put her in it and she screamed!!!! I yanked her out of the water thinking I must have made it too hot and burned her, but it wasn't. I think it just shocked her to be lowered into a tub of water. I felt horrible and she didn't calm down the rest of the bath. Now I'm scared to give her another.

Wildcat - sorry to hear about your cold. Like you said, it may be a good thing if DH is getting a feel for what you go through.

Philnikki - great xmas pictures. Her smile is just adorable.

Diapers~ We are in a size 1 we have had 2 poop leaks and 1 pee leaks in Noelles 9 week life... I prefer huggies supreme or CVS brand. The times that we did leak were with pampers swaddlers...I don't like them that much

Lazy eye - I think Aimee has a lazy eye on her left side. ... they could have corrected it. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, could it be hereditary?
I don't *know* but both things seem logical to me. I was really worried about H crossing his eyes (he appears to have outgrown it) and my ped wanted to refer us to a specialist at 2mo if it hadn't corrected itself. I would most certainly talk to your ped.

Ashley had her 2 month shots today and has been a real crank box...and really isn't eating. Pedi told me I need to stop holding her and rocking her to sleep - put her in her crib and let her cry for 5 minutes, come back and pat her if she doesn't stop - I really don't agree with that - I say she is still too young - pedi says they catch on quick and that she will get harder to stop this behavior the older she gets - question - does anyone else hold and rock their babies to sleep?

blow out - only once - and then I moved up to size ones and we were fine (I think her big butt was hanging out of the infant pampers :D ). We use Swaddlers and I love them. Idid have a blowout with prune juice but that was my fault.

Wildcat - sorry to hear about your cold.

Philnikki - great Christmas picture. Her smile is adorable...glad everyone cooperated.

dbers - I will have to check out the thread..does your little one already have allergies?

diapers/blow outs - we use the Swaddlers size 1-2 and we have a blow out about once a week.

does anyone else hold and rock their babies to sleep?

Yup!!! I hold Caitlin for all of her naps and at night - I can usually put her down after she is out - IMO she is too young to self sooth without crying and I will not let her cry, so we will work on that when she gets a bit older. I still rock/hold my 2 year old at night (not to a full sleep but until he is drowsy) and he has no problem self soothing/putting himself back to sleep if he wakes up! Ped's are not sleep experts so always go with your gut OK!

crazy - Well, we think she has a food sensitivity to dairy and maybe soy.. it's hard to know for sure, but she's had digestive issues from the start, and most recently had specks of bright red blood in her diaper :( We have a family history of allergies, so the Pediatrician thinks it is probably a sensitivity.

BeachBum - we CD too (and love it!) but when we go out I typically put her in the generic brand dipes - they fit her great & we haven't had any leaks! I think it really depends on your DC's body type...

Kim - Occasionally I still have to hold Lily to get her to sleep, although she is getting better about going down on her own. Although I *still* can't get her to sleep in her crib! She has to be w/ mommy & daddy

Hi girls! Sorry I've been MIA lately. I was working on a huge fundraiser for a group I volunteer with and it's finally over!

Griffin had his 2 month check up last week and all is looking good. He weighs 13 lbs (73%) and is 23.5" long (70%). He had outgrown his reflux medication dosage, so we upped that and are still waiting to see results. He got his shots but since he was already screaming from his exam, we didn't really notice a difference when he actually got poked for the shot  . His only reaction was that he slept more than usual that day.

We're still dealing with sleep issues. His longest stretch is 3 hours and then he wakes up every hour or two after that. One night he was up every 45 minutes...talk about painful! I'm not sure what we're doing wrong or what to do to change things.

Is anyone still swaddling their baby for sleep? This is the only way we can get Griffin to stay asleep. His ped said we should consider stopping so that he learns to self soothe, but he wakes up EVERY time we lay him down without the swaddle. Any suggestions?

Now I need to go back and catch up on all that I missed...

PrincessCrappy - I disagree with your pedi - I am still swaddling - I had a friend who swaddled until 4 months (I think at three months she started swaddling with one arm out). I am a firm believer in the Happiest Baby on the Block and they encourage swaddling for as long as you need it - until they get better control of thier arms. I was told the same thing about rocking Ashley to sleep - that she needs to self soothe. I am trying to wean her off of me (she actually just fell asleep in her pack and play all by herself which is a first) but I will still swaddle.

philnikki - she looks just like you - that is very creepy.

I am reading the baby whisperer now - however, part of me tells me just to do what I feel is right. I do need to get her on a schedule before starting back to work and daycare but I shouldn't stress myself out about it - for those of you already in daycare - did you establish a schedule prior to them going to daycare?

Schedules - We really didn't start anything before I went back to work. I just figured that Ava was too young to adapt to what I was trying to do anyway, so I would try and work around her. Its best just to be flexible, which is why we wake up so early. Typically she needs changed and fed so I do that when she is ready, either its when we first wake up or after I have been up for awhile she will wake up on her own. In the meantime, I am getting ready for work. Its worked for us so far. We are always out the door on time (1/4 till 7) And then we take a quick walk around the mall and then she gets dropped off at daycare. What helps me is that I get there about 20 minutes before she is supposed to be there and I feed her or cuddle her, etc. Just to ease the transistion for both of us. Its the hardest part of my day by far though.

Good luck!!

Princesscrappy - so sorry to hear about the lack of sleep, I hope that changes soon. We are still swaddling Aimee at 6wks. She will sleep during the day for 3 hours or so without swaddle, but at night we get 7 hours with the swaddle. I'm not giving that up!

dbers i know, i'm not sure i understand it. but this is what the ped (as well as my doc) says. i think maybe it's a sensitivity vs. true intolerance. semantics, i know.

Charm - I guess I'd rather be *sensitive* than *intolerant*

Swaddling - I attempted to use a sleepsack for Alex the other night. When I transfered her to her bassinette, she immediately hit herself in the face with one hand, and hit the side of the bassinette with the other. Needless to say - she woke herself up! Back to swaddling for us..

Kay2003

swaddling - we only stopped swaddling because Kaito seemed ready to stop. He would constantly wiggle his arms out of the swaddle and sleep with his arms up above his head. From there we went to the sleep sack and now he's just in a heavier outfit.

philnikki - Those pictures are just amazing.

diaper blowouts - Wow, I'm amazed that you've had so few blowouts. Kaito had a stage where he was constantly blowing out of outfits. We found he blewout of his Newborn size pampers (I think he was outgrowing them) at one point. The Huggies 1 size works really well for us. Sometimes it's the oddest thing - he pees and wets his BACK!! He tends to have blowouts when he is lying on his side and poops.

congestion - Poor baby is still so stuffed up. It's painful to hear him try to breathe. I'm suctioning him with the bulb. Any other suggestions?

philnikki - Those pictures are just amazing.
ITA! I would frame them together and hang them in her room or something.

swaddlingWe swaddle at night, but by the first time he wakes up to eat he has broken out.

After seeing that topic in parenting about "flat heads" I've started to worry. Henry's head is very vertical in the back. My husbands head is too, so I'm hoping it is just genetic...but my worry wort self is taking him in to the ped just in case. I mean, it is fixable while they are little. I would just kill myself if something ended up causing him problems later in life that I could have fixed.
Is anyone else worrying about flat heads?

philnikki
11-09-2005, 05:47 AM
congestion - Ava still has her cold, so we are dealing with this everyday for over a week! We are making an appt. today with her ped. for next week since it does not seem to be getting any better. We use the bulb, but before we do, we usually put saline drops in there to break up the mucous a bit. We use the brand Little Noses.

Swaddling - Ava has not been swaddled since we brought her home from the hospital! She just never seemed to care for it. AS tight I would get it she would either cry or break free. She just sleeps in her sleeper, socks, and a hat for now, but when it starts to get cooler, I am going to put a onsie underneath and use the sleepsack.

flat heads - Funny you should mention this! DH has a flat spot on his head, which he calls his "deformity" Anyway -- Ava does not have this yet, but then again she usually sleeps with me and my arm is usually undreneath her head when she is on her back...something that I will keep monitoring as she sleeps more on her own. We just have started putting her in her bassinet for half the night.

Thanks again for the comments on those pics! It still weirds me out how much she looks like me! Beachbum - I think I might just put those pics up in her room! We have one of her daddy at that age too! Thanks :D

swaddling - Lauren sleeps so much better swaddled and we don't plan on stopping anytime soon. She does try to break free, but when she does, she seems to wake herself up, so we try to get it as tight as possible and are successful about half the time! I never know what to dress her in for bed though...now that the weather is colder she wears a footed sleeper and then is swaddled, is that too much??? I don't want to overheat her!

colds - Well, it was probably inevitible, DH had a cold, then I had it and now Lauren woke up with a snotty nose this morning:(. It doesn't seem to be bothering her any, but I feel terrible for her! I got out our "handguide" that our ped's office gives you and they say NOT to use the bulb syringe as it can mess up their mucous membranes, just one of many opinions though, I'm sure. It says if they have congestion you can take them in a steamy bathroom to break it up. They also said saline drops are ok. I think we'll just let Lauren's run its course, unless she has problems breathing/sleeping.

flat heads - I worry about this, but Lauren turns her head constantly while she's sleeping...from back to left to right. Is that good enough I wonder?

QOTD - Holiday pictures - When is everyone getting these done? We have an appt for a week from Sunday (11/20 I think?). I want to get them done early enough that we can use the pics for Christmas cards. She'll be 2 months on 11/27, so I figured it would cover both! Also, where are you having them done?

baptism--already done. we did a quick private baptism after church when DS was a few weeks old. My church normally does them during the regular service but DS1 won't behave in church and I didn't to sit up front with a misbehaving child I would have to take out several times so we arranged to do it after the service with just the family.

How long is your ceremony? Our neice (born 2 days before DS) had her baptism last weekend. 1.5+ hour ceremony AFTER the regular church service. I literally walked out before it was over. 12:30 to 2pm with a 2 month old and a 2 year old (and a 2 year old who didn't get lunch and is overdue for nap)? Insane. We are waiting until January so that my sister (the godmother) will be back in CA (currently she's on the east coast in school). cold - Well, it was eating at me all day, so I finally just called our ped office for peace of mind for what we should be doing. Here's what they said in case it helps anyone else battling a baby cold and wants one ped's office opinion:
She said that clear snot is how it starts out and then it will get a little yellow or green as the cold proceeds (hers has been yellowy today, which is why I called). Anyway, she said to get a humidifier to use at night and to have her
sleep on an incline. She said I can also use saline nose drops and the bulb syringe before she goes to bed and before she eats if necessary to help her breath (but not to do it very often). She said she also might run a slight
fever that will go away. Other than that, I call back if:
- the fever comes back
- the cold isn't gone after 10 days
- she has drainage out of her eye(s) (apparently ear infection can drain out of the eyes, weird!)
- she's fussier than normal
- she's not sleeping well
- she's not eating well

So, I'm feeling better now that she doesn't have to be seen, she already sleeps on an incline wedge, and I'm going to get a humidifier as soon as DH gets home:).

Thanks for all the feedback re: swaddling. Kim, I love the idea of transitioning with one arm in and one out. We're trying that right now with his nap. I remember reading somewhere that babies don't lose their startle reflex (the reason they flail their arms around) until 3 or 4 months, so I guess I won't worry about swaddling until then!

Another Catholic baptism here. We just took our class last night and now we can schedule the actual baptism. The ceremony takes part in the usual Sunday service and they'll only take 2 babies at a time. I'm hoping we don't have to wait too long before they can get us in. We'll have a celebration of some sort afterwards, I just don't know what yet. Scott's family is not Catholic, so I'm not sure if they'll fly out for the ceremony or not (I think it would be a nice gesture if they did). My family is an hour and a half away, so other than my immediate family, I'm not sure who will come.

We just hired a pro photographer to take our family pics next month. We'll have some christmas shots in addition to regular photos. I need to take his 3 month pictures on or around December 1, so I'm not sure if those should be regular or christmas pics or both. We will also be taking a family portrait with my sister and her family as a gift for my mom. My sister is due with her second baby any day now and all my mom wants for christmas is a portrait of all of us. It should be fun  trying to get a photo of a newborn, a three month old, a three year old and four adults!

Sorry to everyone dealing with colds! Give extra cuddles to those sick babies!

Sorry I haven't been around much. I went back to work on Monday. I hate it. I hate leaving DD at daycare. I've never felt so awful in my life as I did when I left her at daycare for the first time. She's been sleeping through the night for the past two days though, so hopefully that trend will continue.

*hugs* to SoLongToGo. That is one of the hardest things to do. It does get better as time goes on, but then you feel guilty about how easy it is for you to leave the baby with someone else. I wish we could all be SAHM's if we wanted to. I hate leaving my boys.

Baptism We had Hunter baptized on October 23rd. We lucked out cause my Dad was home for a 3 day leave before Iraq. We had a private ceremony which lasted about 20 min and Hunter cried the whole time. FYI-feed and change your babes RIGHT before the cermony-it will make it that much easier. NikkiWe had coffee and pasteries in the church hall afterwards. I should have done finger sandwiches since it was at 12...the only regret. We took one class for 3 hours, which included dinner. It was very nice. Unfortunatly we had to attend the class AFTER the christening due to circumstances.

Colds Hunter just got over his first cold wildcat. We ran the humidifier right before he went to bed and it mad his room SO moist. We used saline drops called "OCEAN" They are gentle enough for infant. We drops 2 in each nostril and suctioned his nose out. It got rid of his cold faster and he could breath better. You can also roll a towel and put it under her crib sheet when she sleeps so her head is inclined. Hope she feels better!!

Lisa - I know exactly how you feel! I *HATE* leaving Ava everyday. All of the ladies at her daycare totally make fun of me bc it takes a solid 30 minutes for me to get all of my goodbyes in. I so wish I could work part time. I haven't been able to transistion her to her crib either bc I am so sad about missing her all day and I am afraid if I don't have the nights with her that someone other than me will be the person she is used to :( It really sucks, I know. Wish I could tell you what to do to feel better...I am still at the point where its just still so awful everyday and I have been leaving her there for a month now. :(

Colds - Ava is going to her ped. today. She is just not getting any better and its the 10th day :( We are going to make sure its not an infection. My poor baby :(!!

In other news....Ava Rolled Over!!! She did it this morning when I was changing her in to her outfit for the day! She is growing up so fast!!

Hi everyone,

We've been MIA because of our Baptism. Patrick was baptized on Saturday. DH and I went to the class in August before DS was born and my church does a baptism ceremony on Saturdays (not part of the regular mass). I too am Catholic. Patrick was awesome...actually all 5 of the babies were...Patrick didn't cry at all...he had just eaten so was pretty happy....he just starting falling asleep.

We are having some great days here...patrick is sleeping 7-9 hour stretches at night!!! Last night he was spitting up from 9-11pm but then splet from 11-6am...not bad.

Colds Patrick is just now getting over his second cold!!! We have alot of babies in our family and he has now picked up two.

work I am dreading going back to work!!! I have until Jan. 3rd but I sympathize with you all...it's terrible.

blowouts- yep...Patrick does that pretty often too...we've gone a couple of days without but i'm sure I just jinxed it...oh, and he pooped on TWO different baptism outfits on Saturday!

Back from the doctor! Ava has bronchiolitis :( We have some albuterol we have to give her. Her ped. said that when he listened to her breathing on the stethescope he could hear her weezing :( Poor baby!! Anyway -- we give her the meds for the first time tonight. If its not all gone by Wed. she has to go back and they will give us a nebulizer to help her breathe. I sure hope she is not on her way to having asthma. The thing that scared me was that I guess in infants this is caused by a strain of RSV  So, I am off to research this, or as Phil likes to call it "obsess".

colds Wildcat, philnikki, thanks for the info. on the congestion. Kaito is still so stuffed up. It's been nine days so I think I am going to call the ped. tomorrow for advice. I don't have a humidifier so I think I"ll take him in the bathroom when I take a shower tonight. Thanks for the info. on the aspirator! I also didn't know that you aren't supposed to use it much. And here i was, thinking I was helping him everytime I suctioned him.

Hugs to everyone that has to send their babies to daycare. There are some days that I wish I could send Griff to daycare for the day, but I know in reality it must be the hardest thing ever.

So I decided to get my first real workout last night. The rec center in my community has different fitness classes throughout the week and last night was Jazzercize. At first I felt like a total loser, suburban housewife going to Jazzercize -- I mean my MOM went to Jazzercize in the 70's. But alas, I really needed to get my butt moving. When I got there, it turned out that it was "body sculpt" night instead. What-was-I-thinking?? I should have turned and run. Instead I jumped right in with full force lifting weights, doing abs and resistance training. I cannot move today. Seriously. In better news, I did meet another new mom that lives in my development. She said she has a fussy baby too, so we've decided to be new best friends and go for walks together. Cool.

Nikki - I am so sorry Ava has bronchitis!! Hopefully it will clear up soon!

Where is everyone?? I hope you're all out having great weekends! We had a nice, stress free weekend. Saturday we went to a sausage & beer tasting party - random, but fun. Today we did some major shopping -- a LOT of fun!

For myself, it was a breastfeeding bonanza. I bought a Hooter Hider (www.hooterhiders.com) in this fabric: http://www.hooterhiders.com/preview_image.php?iid=37. I really like using it so far. It's much lighter and easier to use than a blanket when NIP. I also FINALLY got decent nursing bras. I've been rotating between a few I bought at Motherhood that have been doing the job, but nothing I love. Now I have this beauty:
http://www.bellamaterna.com/img/sub_nrcb.jpg
from Bella Materna (http://www.bellamaterna.com/). It was a little pricey, but I would have paid anything for a nice black nursing bra! I loved it so much, I bought 2 in black and I'm on the wait list at the store to get a nude and white one.

Griffin also scored on my shopping adventure. We finally found (and agreed on) his Christmas outfits. We got one at BabyGap, but it's not on their website anymore. It's a black, red and white argyle vest with grey flannel trousers and this shirt underneath:
http://www.gap.com/Asset_Archive/GPWeb/Assets/Product/318/318594/main/gp318594-00p01v01.jpg.
We got his second outfit at Gymboree:
http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Gymboree/140003579?$240x305$
http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Gymboree/140003586?$240x305$
http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Gymboree/140003576?$240x305$
with the matching blanket, bib and socks. Thank God both stores were having major sales!

I received a free can formula in the mail this weekend. If anyone uses Enfamil Lipil with Iron let me know and I'd be happy to send it to you. It's a full size can and I'd hate for it to go to waste.

I have a bravado "plus" (which is for larger breasts), as I am a DD right now. So far it is GREAT! I too was making do with target and motherhood nursing bras. This one is so, so much better.

I want to hear the scoop on the "hooter hider". NIP has not really worked for me because DS wants to move the blanket.

Well, MIL just got in town today and saw H for the first time. :( I still can't believe that she is just now seeing him for the first time. She stayed for about 20 min, and did not "oooh, and aaaahhhh" sufficiently. ;) She didn't look at his hands or toes or little ears or anything. I mean, isn't that what grandma's do? I wouldn't expect that from my friends, but I do from her.
Seriously though, I am hurt and know DH is. The behavior is not really typical (although she isn't the warmest person around), which makes it hurt more I think because it wasn't what we expected.

I think I mentioned that I was taking H to the Dr. over my concerns over his head getting flat? Well the Dr. kind of laughed at me, but did say that the left side was flatter than the right and just to not let him turn his head that way when sleeping--easier said than done! But I'm glad to know that everything is ok really.

Beachbum - I have my own MIL issues at the moment too. Plus, my own mother has been so lazy about coming to see Ava. She serioulsy saw her in the hospital when she was born and not once since. I mean, Ava is going to be 3 mos old next week  and she still hasn't come to see her. I only live 40 minutes away. Sheesh. There has always been some kind of excuse. And I am not brining Ava there bc she smokes, and I don't want Ava in her house with her bronchiolitis. I hear ya though. Its super disappointing, and it makes you even madder bc you don't want them pulling this kind of thing on your child when they are older and realize what's going on...that mama bear instinct is pretty crazy huh? :)

Does H resist turning his head the other direction? Reason I ask is my first son had a problem with looking evenly to both sides. Turns out he had a neck stiffness issue that took physical therapy to resolve. In the mean time my ped says "oh he'll outgrow it" and DS ended up such an unsymetrical head (even his forhead pushed forward on that side) he needed 4 months in a corrective helmet to try to round it out (and it was not 100% successful). I'm not trying to scare you but if you notice H resists turning his head to the other side please call your dr back and ask them to re-evaluate H for torticollis and refer you to a specialist just to get him checked over. I'd hate anyone to have to deal with the insurance and emotional hell we went through with DS1.

I just started DS on Enfamil Lipil with Iron so I'd love it if you still have the can!!

I actually have a can of Similac and soem pre-made bottles from the hospital if anyone needs those.

I am just starting DS on 1 bottle a day of formula so i can start weaning him in december before I go back to work in Jan....i'm so sad. i think i may continue to nurse the morning and night feedings because I am not quite ready to stop BFing...I also pump a bottle a day so he'll get that when he is in daycare.

How is everyone doing? Patrick just went through a growth spurt...he woke up the other morning and he filled out alot and is now quite the chubster! I got on the scale with him and i think he's up to 14 lbs!!!

We're headed to a wedding this weekend so Patrick will take his first plane trip.

Wife - PM me your mailing info and I'll get the formula out to you tomorrow. I think I may have a $5 check from Enfamil also. If I can find it, I'll send that too.

Cr8nme - I consider myself a smallish C cup. The bra comes in the size C/D. I honesly can't imagine a full D cup fitting in this same bra. However, they have a couple other styles that might work better!

Beachbum - The Hooter Hider is basically an apron you slip over your head and drap over your body with the baby underneath. It's really light-weight, which is what I like about it. Griffin is always really hot and would get overheated when I tried to cover us with a blanket. He's also really into pulling on fabrics these days (my shirt, burp cloth, the blanket that's supposed to be covering us, etc) so we often ended up more exposed than I cared to be. With the Hooter Hider he can't pull if off of me, it's a large enough piece of fabric to completely cover us both and neither of us get too hot with it on. The best part is that it sticks out at the neck so mom can peak down on the baby while no one else can see. Moving the blanket to check his latch, etc, always defeated the purpose of being covered as we'd end up showing everything anyway!

Please PM me.

Noelle and Ashley are adorable!!! I can't seem to find the exact outfit I want for Hunter. I am going to search right now I think!

Hunter will pull his legs and head up when laying down. When you pull on his arms a slight bit he actually sits himself up! Then he tries to stand. Is he too young to be doing this already? He's a stong little man and seems to be doing everything early, but YIKES.

I don't know what happened to the baptism pic-I'll try it again

Lisa, oh, hugs about work. I hope it's getting easier to leave little Courtney as time goes. I'm so sorry.

Nikki, poor little Ava. I'm so sorry she's not feeling well, but at least she's now diagnosed! You pamper that little girl as much as you want! And don't feel bad about co-sleeping. Remember, most sleep experts say you can't establish bad sleep habit until 4 months, so don't worry. I'm taking that to heart, since we are still co-sleeping here, too. I really want him in his crib by 4 months, so we will see.

Princess Crappy, I was thinking about ordering a Hooter Hider, but can I ask you a question? We don't go out much, since DS HATES the car, but where do you BF if you're in public? We'll go grocery shopping or to Costco, but if he gets hungry, I bring a bottle of BM, since I would never know where to BF. I have to be sitting, so I guess I could do it in a restaurant, but I usually pump right before and bring a bottle. And these days we are more about take out, so I'm not sure I even need a HH, you know?

wife&wannabemom, I was thinking my DS was that heavy, too. I haven't had him weighed since 9 weeks, when he was 11.6, but he's gaining so fast and seems really heavy now. In fact, I think we will be moving to 3-6 month clothes pretty soon. What size diapers is Patrick in now? Josiah's in the Costco huggies size 1-2, but I'm not sure when to move him up. Huggies fit him well, though, since he's very chubby.

Cr8nme, adorable pics! wow, she's so cute. Where did you get those pictures taken?

cr8zyforaf, that is the cutest picture. Those rolls are soo cute! She has such a great smile.

randysmandy, what a beautiful family. Josiah LOVES to stand. He won't even sit anymore  because he wants to stand. He laughs at himself.

I can't believe Josiah is three months (November 15). He is finally starting to babble and laugh now, and his sleeping habit are just beginning to improve. I have a very fussy baby, and I hear the colic does eventually go away, but boy, it's difficult to even imagine when you're going through it. I mean, he's only sleeping in 3-4 hour stretches at night, but that's such an improvement from 1-2 hours! Here's just a little pic of my solemn man after his bath. Can you see any Japanese in him? He's 1/4 Japanese!

SD601 - just a fly by post - try gripe water...you can get it at a nutrition store - also, they sell something at walmart in the digestive section (not baby section) that is comparative....we went through the same thing - is Josiah gassy? that was our biggest problem - and it was waking her up every few hours - I feed a serving to her in water before she eats and she is a different baby...she went from only sleeping 2-3 hours to sleeping now for one week - 6-7 hours every night. Also, I use Hylands Colic tablets also. I got those in the natural/herbal section of my Safeway. Keep your chin up - I know it is awful....there was a three week period where I thought I made the biggest mistake of my life - I am ashamed to say, I didn't even enjoy her because she fussed ALL THE TIME. It will get better.
