I own a Spanish Revival home built in 1941. It's a great house with a lot of character and we are lovingly remodeling and updating it. One of our goals is to build a spanish patio off to the side of the house. Many Spanish homes (at least in Cali) have a patio surrounding their front door. An example is this:

Anyway, I'd love to see your Spanish style homes!!!! Any pics to share???

i don't think there's many of us on here ;) i'm in pasadena as well. here's mine (2 yrs ago when we bought it)

i would love to add a courtyard to the front area to the side of the front door, but i'm too afraid it wouldn't look original.

we're about to start on the backyard, which has so many original spanish features left. we have a great courtyard in the back with stucco retaining wall and fountain in the middle, we can't wait to enjoy our backyard!

Here's ours. We have a front patio on the left side of the house that is off of a sitting room.

Subscribing! I love Spanish style homes. We don't have them where I live but DH and I plan to move to Phoenix within the next 5 years and hope to buy one then.

Craftgenius~That home is gorgeous!!!

Dana~Oh we are so close!!! I would post pics of our little haven but it looks like crap now and I would be embarrassed. I think that if you did it right, you could do a period inspired front patio. There is a wonderful book called "Red Tile Style" that I can't recommend enough. YOu can get it on Half.com
BTW, pop over to the LA boards here, we are going to have an LA GTG in January.

Just want to bump this up. We are finally getting our long awaited survey for the patio rebuild and front yard elevation change. I'll post some "before" pics so you can see how horrible it is now.

I love Spanish style homes and they're in abundance here in the Bay Area. We almost bought one two years ago but it needed $75k of work done and we just weren't up to it. I actually didn't see too many for sale this time around. Must be people are loving them too much to give them up or they're insanely expensive. Lemme see if I can dig up a couple of examples of homes that are for sale.

That is a beautiful home, craftgenius. It almost makes me cry to see how cheap it is compared to condos here in San Francisco. I can't even get a 2 bedroom condo or loft for that price. Oh well. At least we have better weather here.

I have a great appreciation for Spanish style houses. I'd like to share some pictures with you all...

This was a model home a few years ago in Brea, CA. Built in ~2002/2003. All one-story, centered entirely around an inner courtyard area (complete with fountains, plants, etc). I consider it my dream home, if only we could afford it...

This was on the cover of a local magazine a couple years ago...somewhere in Los Angeles

And the rest of these are anywhere from Long Beach to Pasadena.

Thanks Jen, great pics!

I have the book Red Tile Style. Anytime I'm feeling blue about the fact that our little Spanish is taking so long to fix up, I read it. It makes me feel better! :)

I'm trying to decide if I want to eventually put a Spanish style door up. DH says I have to wait 3 years at least to get the value out of the door he put up 3 years ago. What do you guys think of this?

mobox,

that door is a beautiful work of art! I think it would look wonderful on a spanish style house.

mobox ~ That door is beautiful! I think it's perfect for a Spanish-style home.

mobox Hey, we just put that door in on our 1932 Spanish Revivalhouse! I love it! We get tons of compliments on it. I went downstairs just now and took some pictures of you. We had a crappy paneled double door and made it into a single. (And the side panels open).

Also had this put in- it's from an original 1930's Spanish Revival mold. I picked the colors and it was hand made. (The factory is down in Vernon!)

LA - GOR.GEOUS. All of it. I'm so so so jealous that you have the beautiful door. I cannot wait to get one. DH said "but I spent so much money on that door..." But it doesn't match the Spanish style. Ah, someday.....

mo have you checked out the doors at architectural detail or silverlake salvage? you could get an original door for a reasonable amount. have you made any progress with your house? we should post our pics here -- i can't keep up with the old homes thread.

la can i ask who you went to for your tiles? i need some tiles for our fountain asap. i'm planning to go mission tile this w/e, but i doubt i'll end up getting anything since they're soo expensive  i can't even breathe when i go in there, everything's so gorgeous.

My goal is to take pictures for the hideous "before" shots this weekend. We are having an architect draw up the plan for the front-of-house project but haven't made any progress past that. It's wearing on my nerves....but we are suppose to get the plans in the next couple weeks.

Well, I've been really sick for a week so my new goal is to get some shots this weekend.

DH finally got all the final measurements to his GP who is our architect (87 and still working!!!). We hope to have a contractor nailed down by the first of May.

Small steps my friends...

mobox any news about your front courtyard? we weren't planning on doing one, but i was discussing what to do with the front porch w/ our contractor and he thinks we should do one. i'm almost thinking of having the architect do the plans just so we can see what it would look like -- so far dh isn't interested :(
if you're looking for malibu repro tiles -- i found this seller on ebay (artisticabode) and she made custom tiles for us -- she sent me line drawings and color chips and i got to choose all my color combos -- it turns out that the line drawings were the same ones that http://www.calpot.com/ carries and they were *way* cheaper.
