View Full Version : How long to hem pants....

I am short, so inevitably I hem every pair of pants I buy!
However, how long do I make them? I have 2 pairs of boots I wear on a regular basis... one pair of spiky heels and one pair of low wedges. If I hem for the wedges, when I wear the heals they will be too long. I love the look of to the ground with the spikes, but then the bottoms get wrecked in the wedges!

Is this really long enough in spikes? Can I get away with that (or a little longer) without looking like I'm waiting for a flood?

I think you can get away with shorter pants a lot easier when pairing them with boots. Somehow shorter pants still look good with tall boots than with shoes. I think the length on the pic above is perfect to accomodate both pairs.

I like a low break (good thing, since I'm also short), so I would want the hem a few inches longer than in the picture if I were to wear them w/those boots.
Can you give them the lowest break possible w/the lowest shoes (the wedges?) and still wear them with the boots, or are they too short?
Sometimes, you can't have a hem on a pair of pants that is compatible w/all your shoes. I have long pairs of jeans for boots/heels, and jeans w/an ankle break for flats.
If it's not possible to accommodate all shoe heights w/one hem, I would consider the shoes you'll be wearing most with the pants, and tailor the hem for those.

Thanks!
I'll play around tonight and see what I can get away with!
Lately, I have been lazy and just pining my pants... works well that I can change the length, but you start to get the tell tale crease line!

I would like the woman's pants in the picture above to be at least 1-2 inches longer. I would say at least covering the back part of the shoe to where the heel begins, if not a little longer. Then again, I'm short also and I wear all my pants long.

I am also short and wear my pants long. Even when I wear flat shoes I buy ones with a high sole. If I wear very low shoes with dress pants, I roll them up if cuffs are in.

I am tall (5'10) and have a hard time finding pants long enough so I am kind of funny about this. I would much rather err on the side of too long than have my pants too short.

I agree with TennJane, I would rather have them be too long as opposed to being too short.
i like a peek of heel from the back, one inch max!

Can I take this opportunity to mention how much I hate the growing "trend" of not hemming your pants/jeans? I find it disgusting to let your pants drag on the ground. This seems very common among celebrities. At least pretend you take care of your clothes! So yes, hem them and make sure they don't touch the ground in whatever shoes you wear with them!
