Am looking to the cooking afficianados of CC for some party advice. I am throwing a party for DH's bday next weekend. I want it to be a Fall menu and I'd like to include sweet potato pancakes (blini-sized) with some sort of little topping, but I am at a loss for what that topping should be. I saw a recipe for creme fraiche and caviar, but caviar is too expensive and too pretentious. I'd love any thoughts! Here is the rest of the menu so you can get an idea of variety.

Thank You!!

Honey Baked Sprial cut ham
Rolls, sliced swiss and assorted mustards
Broiled figs stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with prosciutto
Sweet potato pancakes with ???
Veggies and dip
Cheese platter with bread or crackers
Hummus and pita
Spiced nuts
Carrot cake cupcakes
Apple tarts

Your menu sounds great! The only thing that jumps out at me is the use of pork as a "main dish" and again on the figs - do you have anyone who is a vegetarian or doesn't eat pork?

To top the blinis what about just creme fraiche with fresh parsley or cream fraiche mixed with either a bit of chopped up smoked salmon or crabmeat?

You could try Salmon Blinis (http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/freshsalmonblinis_70155.shtml). Otherwise, here's a page with tons of ideas (http://www.frenchfoodexports.com/Communication/NewsLetterblini.htm).

I you want to go really simple, you could try melting some different cheeses such as brie, roquefort, herbed goats cheese or whatever your favourite is.

Since teh sweet potato is, um, well, sweet, I'd keep the topping simple, just creme fraiche or sour creme, maybe with a few fresh chives.

I love the crab idea! Thank you. I think I'll do a creole crab salad Since the sweet potato is sweet, the spice will be a nice balance.

Also, the ladies in my journal also recommended serving turkey as well, so I am doing turkey and ham.

Thanks for all the help!
