I thought it was such a great idea to start a nursery thread, so people could gain some inspiration, so I am piggy-backing off the idea!! We are moving on to toddlerhood and within the next 6 months, we will be transitioning Cole into his "Big Boy" room. :D

I have thrown so many ideas of theme's out there and I seem to change my mind daily! My husband agree's with each daily change, so he is no help! :p

I would love to see pictures of your toddler's room if you are willing to share! :D

That so funny I was just thinking the same thing. We are moving into our new house in about 3 months. And we are going to be doing a big boy room too. I would love to see what everyone has done.

Thanks

I'd love to see some ideas, too. We're re-doing Ava's room for her 2nd birthday in December and I'd love to see other rooms for inspiration.

My boys are getting ready to make the move from cribs to toddler beds, and I'm thinking I'll take the opportunity to redo the room at the same time. You know, make it less a baby room and more of a big kid room.

Did anyone else change their nursery decor when their DS/DD were toddlers? I'd love to see photos, ideas, tips, etc.

I don't know if this is much help, but....I decided not to really to a "nursery" (gasp, I know!) and just wait until I could do a toddler room. At this point, my intention is to do whatever The Dude is into and see if he wants to have some input. I know that I'll be incorporating some elements of travel or maps since I have family all over the place (from California to Sicily) and even though I know he won't grasp the whole concept of distance, he will eventually and maybe he'll appreciate it. What I have in mind is a big wall map (they have one I like at The Land of Nod) and then put pictures of Grandma, Grandpa, aunts uncles and such in the cities they live it. I sorta do this now with my nephews (the older ones are 3) and they seem to have fun with it and even recognize the names of states when people are talking. Its so cute to hear my nephew in Wisconsin say, "Ryan lives in California" or my nephew in the Bay Area will have on his Wisconsin shirt and say "Aunite Lisa & Uncle Chris live in Wisconsin"; its just too cute! One other idea I'm working on (and now I'm just rambling because I can't sleep) is a Family Book where I have a picture (headshot type) of each family memeber with their name and the name my son will call them with each page laminated so he can look thru the book and recognize family even though he won't see them all the time.

Hi Phen:

When Jake turned 1 we happened to move at the same time so I took the opportunity to redo his room into a big boy room. I went with a car theme (I haven't taken any pictures but I will if I get a chance). I made shades and curtains out of car themed bed sheets (bought a shade kit to make the shades). I used the extra material to make a lamp shade. I have a car bed (looks like a VW bug) - (he won't sleep in it but thinks it's a giant toy). I went to a craft store and bought some unfinished wood cars with pegs and painted them and put them up so he can hang stuff on them. I also found alot of car themed decorations (clock that looks like a tire, truck/car rug and nightlight). It came out really cute if I do say so myself!

For the twins, I didn't go babyish when I decorated figuring they would outgrow it so fast (and they haven't even slept in there yet). For them, I did a sports theme. Made curtains with themed fabric (footballs, soccer balls, baseballs). For their bureau, I painted the knobs to look like baseballs. I bought a ton of frames that are different sports balls for their shelf. I found a lamp where the base looks like a baseball too. I also bought a small rug that has all the sports balls. Haven't decided about bedding yet but I think I will wait until they are in toddler beds before I invest in any of that. I have seen these little bean bag chairs in the shape of the sports balls that I will probably get eventually too.

Hope that helps!

With baby #2 on the way, I am planning to do a big boy room for our DS as well. He's 2 and he's really into cars right now, so I'm thinking about doing a car theme. I also like the idea of an airplane theme. Here are some inspirations from PBK.

I wanted to get some furniture for DD's big girl room but I'm not sure where to go. I want something that will last for 10 years and still be appropriate for a 12 year old. Any thoughts?

When I was first planning on changing DS's room to a big boy room I had planned on buying furniture that would last for several years (till he was 10'ish). Then a coworker of mine who has 3 suggested not, since the kiddos are still young and will possibly crayon, etc on the new furniture. I opted with resale furniture. I found a solid wood headboard and footboard for $60.00 much cheaper than the solid particle board headboard that was priced at $199. The bed is a little scuffed up which is fine since his room is cowboy/western themed. Also, at the resale store I found a lot of great stuff to accessorize his room much cheaper than what I found online! Course it helps that I live in Texas and there is alot of cowboy stuff.

I'm also torn between getting DD "good" furniture that will last many years or going the Ikea route. The Ikea stuff is not that cheap (about $550 for a twin bed, dresser and nightstand), but compared to the furniture I like at Rooms to Go Kids ($1600 for a twin bed, dresser and nightstand) it's reasonable. I'm just worried that the Ikea stuff won't last more than a few years. I guess at that point I may be ready to let her help pick out a new room anyway. My Mom bought me the best furniture when I was 2 and she still has it. Granted it is pretty beat up and it covered with stickers, but it still standing after 30+ years.

Has anyone else gone with Ikea or something similar (mainly particle board)? How is it working for you?

We wanted our DD to have a fun big girl room when we switched her out of the nursery before our DS arrived. We didn't want her to think that she was getting her room taken away but upgrading her to a cool room of her own. We bought her a full size bed with a trundle underneath.

How sad is it that I am already planning the big kid room and they are not even here yet!

Here's some boys ideas-Jungle/fort theme- This is my top pick...
Space Ship
Comic Books- I think I will let DH win this one and do the boy's room. He is a comic book artist and would make a really cool comic city mural.
Cars

For Girls-I want to do a Alice in Wonderland Tea Party room with lots of room for her imagination
Dollhouse- I saw a cute thing online where they made one wall a dollhouse around here bed. It was adorable.

TrulyBlessed - that room is so cute! What color is the paint and also where did you get the bedding?

We ended up getting white furniture from Ikea and we painted the room (lavender). Now I just need to decide on the bedding and DH needs to put the furniture together :).

What is everyone doing for bedding? I don't know whether to get a comfortor, a quilt, a duvet or just a blanket for DD. She will only be about 19 months when we move her to her new room. Also, when can she start using a pillow? I bought a really flat pillow that I think will be OK.

Thank you. :) I can't remember the name of the paint color but it's from Sherwin Williams. The bedding is from PBK which I bought last spring so they obviously don't carry that line anymore. Good luck with your search. In regards to pillow, I think we gave it to our DD right after she turned 1.

surfed into this thread tonight, and thought I'd post a few pics of my DS's big boy room that we did up for him just before he turned two (he'd been in a bed since 17 months). It's still a bit of a work in progress, but we're almost there. We've since added the matching night stand from the furniture series we bought (Sears "Treasure Island"). The bed is now moved a little more to the right and the night stand is in that corner to the left of the bed.

Looking in from the door...the colourful thing hanging from the end of the shelf is an airplane pinata that hangs from a little ribbon. Might be hard to tell in the photo!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/knmerrick/IMG_1306.jpg

The airplanes above the closet... soon I hope to buy several more of these (unpainted from MIchaels) and paint more of them and put up some sort of a border along a couple of walls. I think...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/knmerrick/IMG_1307.jpg

At the foot of the dresser, I don't have a pic of it, but it's a blue rug with airplanes and helicopters:

and finally, the best part of this room, DS:

Does anyone know anything about flexa beds? I searched the Baby Bargain message board and read the 1 review on Amazon, but there really isn't much..

This is currently the one that my daughter loves, but I'm not too sure she'll ever go to sleep in it. there's a 5 year warranty, and the business has been around.

target has this, not as snazzy as the pbk furniture, but you can jazz it up a bit with adding your own stripe, fits standard size twin bed and frame.

I recently got this bedding for my boys at PBK. (they will be sharing rooms)

For DS2 (8 weeks old):
Little Racer Quilted Nursery Bedding (Quilt, Bumper and Fitted Sheet)
http://a293.g.akamai.net/7/293/5910/0010/image2.styleinamerica.com/pkecimgs/images/products/200629/0007/img30m.jpg

For DS1 (turns 3 in October):
Litte Racer Quilt and Sham
http://static.flickr.com/75/202199857_f51b2109bb.jpg?v=0

Best of all they were all on SALE! I got everything for under $250. :D Most of this stuff is discontinued, so I had to call 3 different PBK's just to get the Little Racer Quilt in a twin bed size for DS1. I guess you could say I was on a mission. ;)

We just moved so we're still in the process of getting "settled in". DS1's twin bed won't be in until next weekend. As soon as we have everything up (and organized!), I'll be back with some pics.

Gen - Thanks for posting those beds. Those are soo cool. I'll have to check those out.

bluhimmy - I was gonna ask the same thing. My DS is really into cars, so that's why we went with a car theme. Originally I was gonna just do "boyish colors" so that he could grow with his room, but I couldn't resist the bedding since it was on SALE. hehe.. You may wanna check Costco.com for boys furniture as well.

vjel – LOL. H likes everything you’ve listed. :D I can do the trains and cars together, but adding a cat into the mix? I’ve seen some bedding that I like, but aside from that, I’m kind of stuck. I need inspiration for the walls and rest of the décor; that's major down fall.

lelee – That’s one of the bedding I was considering. Darn I missed the sale. I’ve been surfing ebay for the quilt & sham only, and it’s not nearly as good as the deal you got. :o So far, I’m still undecided… Do come back and post pics when you’re done.

pontmarie – Great mural! :) It’s murals like yours that scares me away from them. I know I would never be able to come up something that cool! I would love to see more pics of your DS’s room with the furniture and all.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments :D DH's friend is an artist and he designed the mural based on a sketch DH did. The ropes are real, the lanterns are real and wired for lighting, the 1/2 crow's nest is real, the sail is real (muslin), and the side of the ship with the cannons painted on it is wood set a couple of inches from the wall to give the illusion of depth. The "real" stuff was done by DH, the detailed painting was done by his friend, and then another friend and I did larger areas like the sand shadowing, etc. i.e. the stuff we couldn't mess up :D

We have a white convertible crib and a plain dresser, so the furniture is not pirate themed, although my mom made a bumper and pillow set from a fabric that looks like sea waves.

This is the corner where we put DS's crib, he can see the birds and crab through the slats of the crib:
http://catsandcrafts.com/ourfamily/aidan/step10light.jpg

Dolphin - we need to paint the switchplate white, this was a last minute thing.
http://catsandcrafts.com/ourfamily/aidan/step10d.jpg

I haven't taken more pics with furniture, it was finished just before I had our second son so it's been hectic :)

QPDoll - I would definitely check Target, Walmart or IKEA. If you're looking for a toddler bed, they have a lot that are under $100. As for the beds with storage underneath, they had something like this for $119.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0009PQ76W.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS260_.jpg

not sure what color you are looking for, but they have all kinds. While I personally haven't used this type of bed, it will probably be an option for my boys later on when they get older. If you don't get this type of bed, you could always use those drawers that slide right under the bed from IKEA.

DD got a new room for her third birthday. She wanted a high bed but I wasn´t convinced of that since she fell out of her bed regularly. So I decided to buy the Kura bed at Ikea since you can use it as a high or a canopy bed:

http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/63668_PE171446_S4.jpg

I did not get the sky and I did not like the blue sides of the bed. So I got pink adhesive film to turn it into a princess bed. I also bought a light pink mosquito net and sewed on a dozen frog kings from Ikea. This is how it turned out:

http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/bellabonga/DSC03464.jpg

Maya was and is absolutely thrilled by her princess bed. The bedding is also by Ikea. She got the bed in February and we have agreed that I will turn it around to make it a high bed on Christmas Eve.

Unfortunately I don´t have a picture of the whole room. The opposite wall from the bed looks like this:
http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i101/bellabonga/DSC03466.jpg

The closets were also from Ikea but they don´t have them anymore. The table with the little people on it is an old TV-rack by Ikea on which I have glued fake lawn carpet. It´s very practical since she can play on top and store her board games underneath. DD has painted the pictures herself with finger paint. :)

Apart from what you see, she has a mid-high white bookshelf (Ikea Hensvik), a cream white carpet and a chalkboard.

Haven't done this myself, but I'm a twin, shared a room with my sister my whole childhood and for many, many years had beds with drawers underneath as a space saver. Worked out well! :D

I don't have any pictures, but we have this duvet cover from IKEA in DD's room.
http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/51729_PE151895_S4.jpg

We painted her nightstand the same color of orange as the crab and coral, and we have three decorative pillows on her bed (a pink squid, a blue octopus, and Shamu). Her toybox is one of those pop-up ones in a turquoise color, and there's a white bookcase where she keeps her art supplies and some of her other toys. I'm planning to repaint the walls soon with a water theme - two shades of aqua blue, the darker on the bottom half. We still need to do some artwork on the walls. I'm in the middle of coloring some fish pictures we have so that I can frame them.

I really, really love her room. I like that it's got more of a "little kid" feel than a "little girl" one.

(My DD is 8, but I am planning to keep her room as-is for our next set of foster kids, and they will be under the age of 5.)

i thought the bed in this room was cool. if you look closely, there is a step up to the platform bed, a built in shelf, etc. the only bad thing w/ this is that you can't move the bed around if you decide to rearrange the room.

We kept it relatively simple so he could grow into it. We got the bedding at Target and the full bed set at Kmart. We have also added some of his art to the walls since these pictures were taken.

Jeggink thanks for the great pics, the Kmart funiture looks really cute, very similar to PBK. How is the quality?

OctoberPrincess The quality is actually pretty decent. You have to put it together yourself, so that can be a pain and the drawers in the dresser needed some "tweaking" to roll smoothly. For the cost we have been quite happy, plus when it gets dents and dings, we have no problems repainting it :).

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how old were your kids when they moved into a big bed (not a toddler bed)? I want DD to start getting used to her big bed before the baby arrives, but not necessarily moved completely out of the crib. At 19 months, she still moves around a lot at night, and I worry that she'll work her way to the end of the crib rail in her sleep.

Busybee We moved DS over about a month ago (25mths) and he also moves around a lot. We just waited until we felt he was ready. If you look at his bed, I usually have the comforter folded up at the end of the bed rail and also put his big dog there as well to make sure he doesn't go to far down. Hope that makes sense.

how old were your kids when they moved into a big bed

My son got his own big bed when he was about 25 months. He doesn't have any bedrails. He also slept in our bed for several months all night long, so would be up there for a few hours before we went to bed. We also do not have bed rails. He never fell off during this time.

After he's asleep, I just put a pillow between him and the edge of the bed. It seems like it would be too hard to roll over it. I should add that his bed is only about 2 feet off the ground, so I'm not worried about him falling off anyways.

I don't know how he wakes up because he gets out of bed and comes and gets me. I also resist the urge to peek in on him because inevitably the door will wake him up.

He did move to his toddler bed when he was 14 months, and he did fall out of that bed once or twice. We put a pillow down where the rail was open and he just landed on it.

Great rooms everyone!

I have a question, when you buy furniture for big girl/big boy rooms, do you plan on keeping it for them for good? Like when we moved my DD to a bed, we bought a toddler bed b/c I was undecided on what kind of bed I wanted her to have for good. I plan on their beds lasting them until they move out. But as they get older, I'll want to get them a desk and maybe other "bigger kid/teen" furniture. Or is the desk the only thing to wait on? I guess I don't want to be redoing their rooms more than one more time really so I'm confused as to how to go about it when I know we'll add desks to their rooms later on. Am I making any sense at all???

We don't plan to get DS furniture again either so I think we will invest for the long run the first time around. We plan to buy DS a bed, Chest of Drawers, and night table, not sure if we will get a book shelf. I figure I can always add the desk (if the need arises) when he gets older. I don't intend to let DS have a computer in his room since I feel kids need to be monitered while on the computer, especially as teenagers, so the computer will go in a public place. I grew up doing homework in the dining room even though I always had my own desk, DH rarely used his desk also so we are not completely sure there is a need for a desk (until college perhaps, if they are home for it).

K&H's mommy cute theme! the bed looks like the Pottery Barn Kids Thomas bed that I have been admiring in a very similar color to the one I would like, where did you get it?

October Princess - Thanks! We bought the set and an infant/children's store here in our area. The furniture company is DLM? I love it because it's solid wood and just solid. Hopefully it lasts until he leaves for college!!!

Hmmm... as far as furniture goes... I always thought that when Nic was ready for a big boy room, I'd just find a good used set (if its still in good condition when they go to sell it, I'd know its already survived a childhood so odds are good it would survive another) ... BUT, space is kind of tight even though we have a 4 bedroom. We're converting the formal living room downstairs into a playroom, so one bedroom will become a den. One is the nursery which leaves one bedroom for a big boy room and in March, we'll have two boys.

So... I'm planning one big boy room that will eventually be shared by both boys. We're going to do bunk beds - Nic will start off on the bottom bunk, and when his brother moves in, he'll graduate to the top bunk.

We plan to do up his closet... two bars in half, then half will be shelves. I'm hoping all their clothes will fit in that configuration... then there will be an armoire/dresser thing that should fit pjs/underwear and is tall enough to safely house a lamp.

As far as furniture goes, do I need anything else? I don't anticipate a lot of toys going in the bedroom, since we'll have the playroom downstairs, but want to leave some floor space for play...

:)

We just moved into our house at the first of the month and DH's aunt came and decorated DD's room as a gift to us. (DD is 3) It's gorgeous and I'm definitely asking her to decorate DS's nursery, and maybe the rest of the house....;)

Here are some pics. The color doesn't show up well, but 3 walls are purple and one is pale turquoise. Also, for some reason the picture of the wall with DD's name is flipped and her name looks backward. I'm not sure what happened or how to fix it .

I know there is a thread on transitioning into big girl/boy rooms. But, I would like to see some rooms already made up. We are starting to plan my dd's new big girl room and would like some inspiration. I am interested in doing a iron daybed with trundle and accessories (dresser, nightstand). Anyone have any pics for me? :) And, also where you bought them.

Just wanted to let anyone that's interested doing a nautical, boat themed toddler room that Costco has a speedboat trundle bed very similar, if not, exact to this PBK bed:

http://www.potterybarnkids.com/pkimgs/rk/images/products/200706/0008/img67l.jpg

And it was only around $600-$700, way, way cheaper than PBK. I couldn’t find it online at Costco though. It was so cute and such a great deal that it made it tempting. Now, I'm hoping Costco would carry the PBK sports car trundle bed soon.

I'm not changing for a while, since my youngest is only 16.5mos (my youngest 2 share a room). I had been thinking the other day of moving the bunk bed (full bottom, twin top) to their room and getting a storage bed or loft bed for my older boy.. then I remembered the younger two were likely to get hurt trying to climb up to the top bunk. So that'll be on hold for a while.

Our house really isn't big enough to do anything great with the bedrooms. DS (7) only has the bunk bed, a very small desk, and his dresser in his room with a poor excuse of a closet, and it's still very cramped. Can't wait to move!

I'm glad that this got bumped up. Has anyone purchased bedding from Land of Nod? I'm curious about the quality as we are going for a campish feel in DS' room and I like the cotton plaid bedding and moving blanket they sell.

We are starting work on the BBR in two weeks. We are doing one wall a barn red (the wall his headboard will go against) and the other walls a flax/khaki color. I'm not doing a "them" persay, just trying to make it feel a little old school, vintage boy -- something that will grow with him. I'll post pics when it's complete :)

Thank you :)

The play tent was DD's Christmas present from my sister back in 2005. She had seen it in a Baby Gap store and asked about it. She somehow ordered it through the store. A few people have asked me the same thing and I tried to find a model number or something to help them search for on, but to no avail. Even the tag on the storage bag just says "Play Tent"
:(

As for the artwork, my sister painted those for her :) She does decorative painting and stuff for a living and has her own business. If you want her info, just PM me :)

Bedding: Land of Nod
J: JoAnn's, spray painted pewter
Shelves: Repainted from nursery
Rug: PBK used in nursery
Furniture: Morgieau (bed is converted crib)
Flag bunting and blind/curtain made by MIL

Entering the room

ez2luv, why don't you buy from PBK direct? the duvet and sham are not horribly $$$. then you can just buy whatever sheets you want from wherever. the only think w/ buying from PB is that i *think* you can't return sale items...i could be wrong so check first just in case.

I'll look into that.

I looked on the site and I guess we do have a PB near us, but it's at a mall I haven't been to in years!!!!

We are getting ready to start on our daughters big girl room. She will be moving into a full sized bed, which we will add the bed rails. Where has everyone bought their furniture, ie. dresser, headboard, etc. We have looked in some local furniture stores but the furniture we have seen so far is too dressy or to kid like. I want my daughter to like the furniture when she is in high school too.

Buckeye K, I haven't bought a real big bed yet (only a toddler bed), but my feeling on it is this: I'm planning on eventually buying something that will be an heirloom, maybe some type of 4 poster bed. You can always dress it up or down or make it grown up or kid-like with the bedding. When I went into a big bed as a child my parents looked at youth furniture and settled on a brass bed for me that could be used for a child or an adult. I slept in that bed until I moved out of my parents house and it was always appropriate for my age. In fact, I may take that bed for my one of my daughters when the time comes.

We bought that same PBK bedding that vjel posted for my DD's toddler bed in her BG room. We bought it about a year ago and I think the libe was called something like "Spring meadow", but I could be wrong. Of course when I took the photo, her duvet was folded over, so you can't see it. The room is still a work in progress, but you can get the idea:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1428/1217912887_80957ba976.jpg?v=0

We did the kids' bathroom from the same line, but I though the wallies might be a little much for a tiny bathroom:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1352/1217912941_4e234e8038.jpg?v=0

jeez the walls look bright in these pics! They are not quite so "vibrant" in person.

I like that her furniture will get her thru teenage years (if it doesn't get ruined before then!) - desk/hutch will come in handy in school years.

I'd like to add some artwork to the walls. Ruby loves her room. I've moved her bed now, it is against the wall with the window. Her bedside table is next to it, then her big bear, and her chair and tables is also in there now too. It looks much better, more roomy.

right now all DD has are books and a crib for her baby doll... i'm considering moving her kitchen set in there to make some room in the play room.. she's still in a crib but we'll be putting the toddler rail on her crib soon.. i'm just scared if i move some toys in her room, she'll get out of her crib to play

That's exactly what happend with us...we had just a few toys in DD's room in a toy box and a bookshelf full of books...Once she moved into ther BGB she got out of bed constantly at naptime to play instead of nap. Drove me nuts!! So we took all toys out accept for the bookshelf and books...I like having them there for bedtime stories. She still gets out of bed a lot and reads books but at least its a quiet activity.

We will occasionally take puzzles and toys into her room to play but they eventually make their way back to the main play area.

i would reccomend the 3 in 1 crib. We bought one for our dd 4 years ago, and she is currently using it for the full size bed. :)
i think she was almost 3 when we made her crib into a toddler bed, and then about 2 months before she turned 4, we bought her a full size bed.
imo, worth having the convertable crib!

This weekend we converted my oldest DS toddler bed to the full size bed. He loves it! If I had to do it again, I would probably not buy the 3 in 1 convertible crib. Now that I have two DS's I would love to get them bunk beds or loft beds and let them share a room. I will probably do that sometime in the near future and use the full size bed in one of our guests room.

My 33 month old DD is currently (for nap) sleeping in her BGB for the first time - well, the mattress on the floor, which we bought this morning - the bed itself is being delivered on Friday. It's the Sorelle Grande bed (http://www.allchildrensfurniture.com/Sorelle-788-UO1054.html) in Cherry.

DD selected ladybug sheets this morning - but since it's a toddler bed, we found only a crib fitted sheet (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2557684), one which I really love - but it only comes in crib bedding. I have been searching online (after going to both Babies R Us and Target this morning) for laydbug toddler sets and not finding much. The closest I've come is this bedding (http://www.beyond-bedding.com/ladybug-child-toddler-bedding-set.html), which I don't love (I think I'd like it better if it didn't have the accent in black gingham):

So, has anyone seen any ladybug toddler-bed bedding that they can suggest? I love some of the other bug/butterfly ones but they're not the right coloring. At this point, I may just end up buying some red solid/patterned sheets/comforter instead.

twinnyme, isn't crib bedding and toddler bedding the same since they use the same size mattress? Or do you just mean that you don't want the crib bedding because it comes with the bumper?

I found this crib set (http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/kli/kli7001beds.html)that looks like you can order the pieces separately.

This one (http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/glj/glj28340.html)has butterflies and dragonflies. You can also order the pieces separately.

Ditto this one (http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/glj/glj37440.html).

There's a Brandee Danielle set on that site, too, but you can't buy the pieces separately.

Thanks so much, LeslieR! You're right, crib and toddler beds use the same mattress. The only difference I have found is that they don't seem to make non-fitted sheets in crib/toddler bedding. I cannot find a regular sheet (non-fitted) for the life of me in any crib bedding.... But it's always good to get fresh perspectives, because as I was reading your post, I realized, who cares? I can get the other pieces - the comforter, another fitted sheet, and any accessories I want, and maybe just buy a non-fitted solid red or other color sheet - or not at all, because she's never slept with a sheet and probably doesn't need one now (yet). Thank you for bringing some new eyes to my now-seemingly-silly question! :D

ETA: Btw, I love all the ones you posted - thanks. Now just to decide....

The crib comforters are not as big as the toddler comforters are they? I always thought crib ones went to barely the edge of the mattress but not down the sides but I may be wrong.

ETA: found theses measurements here. (http://quiltingpassion.com/Terry/quiltsizes.html)
CRIB: Usually between 30"x 46" and 36" x 50".
TODDLER: Approximately 42" x 60" for a comforter; approximately 46" x 70" for a quilt

Thanks, Chelsea! Good to know... The more I think about it, the more I may just try to find separates in reds/patterns. We looked at all the sets in person at the store, and she only picked the ladybug sheets and doesn't seem concerned about a matching set, so to save my sanity, I may just go with that.

2.5 hours and counting for nap - let's hope the BGB continues its success tonight and for all future nights/naps!

I'm happy that I bought a 3-1 crib because it was the crib I liked the best. It had the look and quality I wanted at an acceptable price. I didn't really care whether I ever used it as a bed in the future, I just liked it as a crib, kwim? FWIW, I moved my oldest directly from crib to queen mattress on the floor. She just recently (almost 2 years later :o ) moved to a full bed on a frame, headboard, footboard, etc.

The crib is still in use w/my younger child and I'd be surprised if we converted it for her either. I take the easy way out and go straight to the bed :p

Geranium - Wow! Like your other DD's nursery, a gorgeous big girl room for your other DD. Simply beautiful.

I can't follow that, but I decided to go with the Hungry Caterpillar toddler bedding, because I just couldn't find any ladybug bedding that I liked. And DD saw the Hungry Caterpillar bedding in a catalog and when I asked her if she liked it, she said yes. So I ordered it that day. It hasn't come yet, but I hope it will soon.

It goes well with her room, because she has a lot of book-related things in her room.

DD is 2.5, but with a second on the way, we thought it wise to go ahead and move her to a BGR. We redecorated and revealed the new room on Christmas morning.

Since these pics were taken, we've added a chair & bookcase opposite the dresser and toy storage along the wall in the second pic. For Christmas, she received a clock (to hang between the left window and dresser) and a bedrail for the full-size bed.

We stilll need to move her toys and clothing into the room, but she was VERY excited about leaving her nursery behind when she saw this and has been sleeping in there anyway!

Jane--LOVE the room, particularly the dog prints. Too cute!

I haven't had a chance to look thru the whole thread, but here's our "BIG GIRL ROOM". We moved DD1 at 16m to prepare for DD2's arrival. So far, so good. We just now, 2 months later, hung things on the wall and got the area rug... I still need a slipcover for the chair and a few more things to hang on the walls.

MKVH, I love the room. I am going for a similar look in DD's room. Can I ask where you got the curtains from?

Here is the bedding I am using for the room:

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/laurenslinens_1986_21155593

The walls in the room are a soft sky blue. I have painted every room in this house since we moved in, and I do not feel like re-painting them. So I think with this bedding and some pink accents, the room will look girly even with the blue walls.

jrsygrl--THANKS! It's from a regional chain here in the midwest. There's a similar set at Value City Furniture (don't know if that's national or not, but the other chain is A LOT more local) which we actually had purchased first and then we cancelled the order.

Jand&Andy I LOVE the room. I wanted to do dogs for DS. His name means "hound lover". We opted for transportation instead but I still love dogs.

Dettes Cute rooms. Where did you get the storage/bookcase for your DS's room? I love your DD's bed, does it have storage underneath? If so, where is it from? I'm planning ahead for DD. We won't be converting the nursery for another year. It's a tiny room so I'm looking for pieces that can multitask.

DallasLady--The curtains are from Tarjay, as is the rest of the bedding. However, they were panels that my mom remodeled, and they were PRICEY. JC Penney has white sheers with flower appliques as well that are cheaper (I think) and may even match your set better. ITA that blue walls would be really pretty with that set AND would still be plenty girly!

maplekitty--We found brackets at Lowes/Home Depot that have a "keyhole" in them. We secured screws into the studs (4 on the long side, 3 on the short), and then the keyhole brackets slide onto the screws. We used 1/4" MDF, so the "headboards" are pretty lightweight.

Thanks lilnance and marteneym. The bookcase and bench in DS' room is from Lakeside Collection. I was inspired by the Pottery Barn one, but it was way too big for our limited space. I honestly forget where I got DD's bed. It was online and I just did a search for a trundle bed (again limited space). When I ordered it, I had the option of getting drawers underneath or the frame for a trundle bed. I opted for the bed, since if we have another girl, they'll have to share a room. (DS' bed is a bunk bed but we haven't put the top one on yet)

I didn't go through the whole thread, but noticed some of you have full size beds in your LO's rooms. DD has a convertible and I'm thinking of turning it to the full size. It's the daybed now, but with all her "friends" they're is no room for her :) At the same time I don't want all the space to scare her.
So, how did your child react to the space?

We went straight from the crib to full size. She didn't seem phased by it at all, though she generally stays in the same small area about the size of her crib. My best advice is to have her watch you convert it so she can see that it's still her bed, just bigger.

We went straight from the crib to a QUEEN. DD didn't seem to be fazed, though we did put the sham pillows along the edge to make it seem smaller; she slept better that way. She has napped in our king frequently, though, so I think the size wasn't frightening to her.

DS's big boy room is large enough that we had a crib & his full bed in there. After we switced to that room, he slept in the crib for about 6mo with stories read on the bed. Around his 2nd b-day he expressed interest in the bed so we moved him into it. We left the crib in the room for a few weeks but he never went back to it and had no issues in the big bed.

My oldest went from crib to queen then to full. She had no problem with any of it. Of course, it was her idea to move to a bed and something she saw as a big accomplishment. Also, she had been a part-time co-sleeper so sleeping in a bed wasn't totally foreign.

I noticed alot of you have bedding from Pottery Barn Kids. I currently have a duvet and matching quilt for my DS and I think it's a little overkill. It looks nice, but he never uses both. Do you ladies use a duvet or quilt more?

We are trying to put together a big girl room for my daughter and don't want to by both the quilt and the duvet. Also, anyone know when they bring out new lines? I usually love everything I see in the catalog, but I'm not really loving anything right now (at least girls bedding).

Currently, DD only has a duvet (which she adores!). Before that she had a quilt, but always wanted extra blankets (she's like her Dad, I guess). Anyway, on my own bed, I use the quilt in warmer weather and the duvet in cooler weather. If my DDs had both duvets and quilts for their beds, I'd do the same. I'm on the look out for a matelasse coverlet for DD's bed and eventually a duvet when my youngest graduates from her crib for just this purpose.

My DD (3.5) has a quilt from PBK, but she doesn't use it. It matches the valances in her room and I keep it folded on the foot of her bed more for show. I got it on sale and bought her sheets and blanket she does use from Target. Now I would like to find one for my 22 month old who we recently moved into the same room. They discontinued the original pattern (Olivia) a while back, so now I'm looking for a cute PBK quilt that goes with the Olivia pattern. I just got a PBK catalog in the mail and it looks like they have some new things out.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think for this kiddo, I'll probably just do the duvet. She gets really cold when she sleeps so I know a quilt and some blanket wouldn't do it on really cold nights.

I'm thinking of buying the French Rose duvet in pink with gingham roman shades and light green walls. Many of her accessories are pink and green so we'd like to stay with the same color scheme. What do you think?

I would love to get the pink floral matelasse quilt one day (esp if it ever goes on sale ), but for right now, a duvet will do.

Mamax2 - You caught me - I am shamelessly copying your house :p. I don't think you live in CT, so I won't get out-ed. I love your decorating style!

I love the Cherry Blossoms line - we were trying to decide between Cherry Blossoms and French Rose. I though the French Rose line had more staying power - it's been around for years. I hate when PB discontinues products. Its usually something silly like needing just one pillow sham and I wind up searching ebay for the discontinued products - and paying a fortune.

A quick question for those of you who have been inspired by design photos online. Where do you begin looking for ideas? Are there good websites that give lots of various ideas?

We are planning on moving in the somewhat near future and I'm wanting to totally redo DS's room and make it more of a big boy room. I'm thinking of using primary/bright colors, but I'm having a hard time visualizing exactly what I want, so I thought I'd look around online and get some ideas - I just don't know where to start!

I can't take full credit for the daybed idea, it was DH's. I was totally stressing over what to do with baby #2 coming. I did not want to buy another crib, but DD is not quite ready for the freedom of a twin bed. So DH says, "Why don't we just get one of those 3-sided beds and turn it around." Duh!

The bed (as well as the dresser, table and stools) are from Ikea. I think we paid $99 for it. All her furniture in this room cost less than just her crib.

I got the clock at Target. I saw it for the first time yesterday and had to buy it. I have been on the lookout for a clock to go in the room for some time.

When my wife and I found out we were going to have another baby 17 months after our first son, we knew we needed to move son#1 out of the 'nursery' soon.

We put our heads together and tossed out 'theme' rooms. Space, Cowboy, Egyptian, Underwater, Fantasy (castle/knights/etc)... But it was my initial drawing of concepts that made us both sure that a Pirate room would be the way to go.

Here's the cleaned up initial scketch:

http://media0.dropshots.com/photos/101283/20060712/b_112641.jpg

From there, I built the ship to actually come out of the wall, with full rigging and sail. The initial idea for the treasure chest was to glue cut-glass gems and pearls onto the wall so he would have something to distract him during diaper changes, but that was abandoned for a more 'cartoon' style.

Here's the finished room minus furniture:

- The treasure chest sits about 3 feet up the wall, just high enough that the changing table is at the same level. The idea was that we'd be able to ask "Where are the GREEN gems?" or "How many pearls?" while changing him ( mostly to distract from the whole process :D )
http://media1.dropshots.com/photos/101283/20060722/r90_b_213835.jpg

- The crib/toddler bed fits perfectly in the corner
http://media0.dropshots.com/photos/101283/20060722/b_213834.jpg
http://media2.dropshots.com/photos/101283/20060722/213833.jpg

- We didn't try to do anything with the window, so mostly just left it alone. But the pirate ship fit perfect between it and the door

http://media2.dropshots.com/photos/101283/20060722/b_222713.jpg

most of the paint was done by a buddy and I... The sail was sewn by my MIL.

hmm.. just realized I don't have the finished room pics uploaded.. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

Anyways, he now LOVES his pirate room. He and his little friends spend hours in there.

I wasn't sure whether I should start a separate thread but am just going to post this here.

Uncreative parents on a budget: what elements (both basics and also fun decor stuff) are you trying to incorporate in your DC's BBR/BGR? What ideas do you have to help the room decor last longer (in terms of being age-appropriate and something your DC likes, as opposed to wearing out)?

For instance, I really want to do a cherry blossom theme in my DD's BGR. I was planning to get a cute cherry blossom bedding set, but then thought about getting plain white and then using cheaper accessories (like cherry blossom print fabric throw pillows) in case my DD wants to change styles later.

I also thought about (for about a minute) that I might attempt painting a cherry blossom tree but I'm so uncreative so that idea was quickly scratched. Then I thought about ordering a trio of nice photos of cherry blossom trees and framing them. Etsy.com has some great photographers selling beautiful prints of their work. I'm not sure what else to get. I think I'll want a clock, but what other wall decor am I missing? There is a ceiling fan in the room so I'm not going to change the lighting, unless I get a little nightstand lamp.

I'm going to keep her books and toys downstairs, so I think I'll just be getting basic furniture. I have been on the lookout for a white wood dresser, a nightstand, and headboard/footboard as I'm hoping to buy off Craigslist to avoid spending over $1,000. Anything else you'd recommend I consider? Did you all buy desks for your DC or are you going to wait until they're older?

Any other suggestions?

GardenGirl

I posted pictures of my daughters big girl room a page or two back.

Right now, we are keeping the furniture to a minimum so she has more floor space to play. The only real furniture she has is a bed and a dresser. She has a small table that is her height so she can draw and have little tea parties. When she gets older and can actually use it, I will get her a desk. She also has a storage bin unit for her toys. I prefer storage bins to a big toybox. In a toybox, you have to pull everything out to find one toy, whereas the bins as easy for her to handle and makes clean-up easier.

I also have stayed away from using cartoon characters (Dora, Disney Princesses, etc.) Those kinds of this come and go, and what is "in" today will be "out" tomorrow. The theme in her room is flowers. Her aunt did buy her a Disney Princess chair, but that's it as far as characters.

I went to IKEA for all her furnishings and spent maybe $300 tops. I am pleased that it should last through her little girls years. When she is a pre-teen she may want more grown up things, and I am okay with spending more money then.

Smiles33 - did you check Target? They have a baby bedding line by Dwell that is cherry blossoms. I know you want it for a big girl room, but they have wallies - cherry blossom adhesive things that stick to the walls (but are completely removeable). That is probably a cheaper and easier way to do it!

smiles33
04-21-2008, 12:32 PM
Thanks Ausi2B, those are great tips! I saw some adhesive things (not Wallies brand) of cherry tree branches that looked very artsy. I actually saw the Target Cherry Blossom Shabby Chic bedding yesterday, but am going tol stick to my idea of solid print bedding w/cherry blossom accessories. I found a beautiful white quilt at TJMaxx yesterday on clearance, so now I need to just find the pillows/accent items.

Hi DallasLady! We actually have a "playroom" downstairs so I don't keep any toys upstairs as she's only in her room for sleeping. We bought her an IKEA small table for playing downstairs, but I'm hesitant to get more IKEA stuff as I want something that will last for years. I'm hoping to buy some higher quality furniture secondhand but it's really hit or miss.

Keep those ideas coming! :)

Help!

What furniture did you buy for your dc's room?? DD has a crib (was DS's), but nothing else. I was thinking about buying a long double dresser, a bookcase, then either a tall lingerie dresser (sounds weird for a baby), or a chest of drawers. Is that enough/too much?

mkvh
04-28-2008, 12:52 PM
We bought DD1's big girl furniture when we knew DD2 was on the way, and they will share a room in the future. So we overdid it a bit on the furniture for that reason. We got:

- dresser w/ mirror
- chest of drawers (2, one of which is in the guest room for now)
- night table (ditto above)
- desk

I bought the desk because I vividly remember my mom searching and searching for one for my bedroom because she hadn't bought one when she bought the set. We intend for the girls to use this furniture till they're out of our home, so we didn't buy "youth" furniture. There's tons of storage, so I know that when they're clothes-crazy teenagers (like their momma) they each will have enough drawer space.

Thanks for replying mkvh We made the same mistake w/DS (not buying enough furniture from his set), so I'm going back & forth with this decision. I had forgotten all about a bedside table...( DS doesn't have one either & I'm kicking myself for it). It just seems so crazy to be buying a desk (!), but it doesn't seem a like a bad idea...

Question What did you transition your child to first...a toddler bed/converted crib or a regular bed?

We put DS right into a twin bed when he turned 2. He's a tall guy and I didn't want to have to do another transition. With DD, she'll go straight into a twin (or maybe a full), too. Our crib doesn't convert and I don't want to have to buy a toddler bed.

DD went straight from a crib to a full size bed with no problems at all.

Crib to queen at 16 months. We have the box spring on the floor in a corner with a bed rail on the 3rd side.
