I own Boxers not a Rottie, but we use State Farm too. We were told that they have no issues with big (or small) dogs until/unless something happens. If/when there was an issue the dog and it's actions would be excluded from coverage from that point on.

American Family Insurance had no problem with us having a doberman. Good luck!

We bought our house before we adopted our dog so she's not mentioned in our insurance policy...should I call our agent?

I was told once by someone who was turned down because of their dobie, just to fudge a little, and add the word "mix." When they said doberman-mix everything was ok with getting insurance.

Here's the problem with that - if there is ever a loss involving the dog - i.e. a bite situation - the insurance company can deny the claim on the grounds of material misrepresentation. Some companies will even cancel your policy. Speaking as an underwriter for a large national company, material misrep is something we pursue with fervor. We feel that a customer who is willing to falsify info to obtain coverage is more likely to falsify info in a claims situation. It's never a good idea to fudge info when talking to your agent.

I'll second what Sue said. We have a pure bred APBT, and we had no problems with State Farm. Also, if you do change the wording, just like calliope_muses said I'd be careful. We had friends do that with their APBT, and their policy got canceled.

ETA: Chilie - I love the last line of your siggy.

Vegastrtle you don't have to call your insurance agent to make a change. If you are concerned though, you could call them without giving your name or policy number and see what they position is on certain breeds of dogs.

Thanks for the input :)
