Over the weekend, the eye lids of our dog were red and puffy. Now they are not really red, but they are still a bit puffy and they are sort of scaly and they seem to be itchy because he keeps on rubbing his head all over everything. If it doesnt' go away/gets worse, I'm going to take him to the vet, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what it might be. FWIW, we haven't switched his food at all and we haven't been feeding him anything extra.

Thanks!

Could it possibly be allergies? I know this past spring, my dogs eyes swelled up really bad, began producing a lot of discharge, and she kept pawing at them like they were itchy. We took her to the vet and he declared it was just allergies and told us to give her some benadryl twice a day. It worked. I know my own allergies have gone crazy these past few days. Maybe you could try giving your dog some benadryl and see if that helps at all. My vet said 25mg per 25 lbs. So, my dog takes 3.

If it doesn't get better, definitely take him to the vet. It could be anything.

I'm guessing conjunctivitus.

Hope he feels better!

A quick update--DH ended up taking Dakota to the vet last night because his eyes looked super red and swollen (like he had been punched in the face). The vet didn't really know what it was but is treating it like allergies, so he got an antihistamine shot and is now taking a couple different things for allergies. He has to wear one of those big plastic collars because his eyes were itchy.

He's never had allergies before and we've had him for 1.5 years and we haven't changed anything in his diet/routine so I'm hoping this is a one time thing and not anything more serious.

If it happens again, I'll try the benadryl. thanks!
