My friend told me to get Dare to Discipline and The Strong Willed Child. Both written by James Dobson.
He advocates spanking. I'm not sure if I do or not. My son is only 11 months. Right now we just say NO in a lowered voice and remove him for whatever he's doing wrong.
I want to read up on discipline books before the need for it arises. Any suggestions? I'd prefer books that aren't affliated w/ a certain religion, but I'm open to reading anything and then seeing what I agree w/. Or if you have a discipline plan that works for family, I'd love to hear what you've come up w/.
FTR, my mom didn't discipline me. I was never spanked, never had time out. Instead she just screamed at me and threatened me and cussed at me, but never actually did anything to me. I don't want to do this to my son.

I have not read Dobson's books, but my understanding is that he's pretty hardcore, even if you do believe in spanking.
I always like Dr. Sears' advice, I think it's respectful of children...

He has a book as well -- maybe your local library can get it for you if they don't have it already.

I like what Dr. Sears has to say about discipline as well. For a really great book about toddlers, I'd suggest The Emotional Life of the Toddler. It's really great at helping you understand why toddlers are the way they are! There's so much that has to do with temperment, and this book really goes into it.

Just like my classroom with i'm teaching, my style is authoratative (rather than permissive or authoratarian) and i run a strict positively disciplined houshold. :)
IMO a must have in every parental library is Kids Are Worth It! Giving Your Child the Gift of Inner Discipline by Barbara Coloroso and How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
I couple of other good references are the Positive Discipline A-Z books by Jane Ed.D. Nelsen and Dr. Sears The Discipline Book
A great eye opening read is For Your Own Good : Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Roots of Violence by Alice Miller

I second the previous suggestions, and have heard especially good things about "Kids are worth it".
This is a book from a Christian perspective but i have been told that it sets a good foundation for parenting and not falling into perfectionism and 'appearance is what matters most' parenting: Families where Grace is in Place by Jeff VanVonderen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1556612664/ref=pd_sim_b_2/103-6223632-6663054?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance).
I would avoid the Dobson books, or just page through them at your library instead of buying them.
I have heard moms also recommend a book (can't think of the name now nor the title) that talks about parenting according to various personality types--what works for certain typs of kids vs. others. I thought that was a neat idea and a good way to avoid the "well, this worked for child A and child B, clearly there's something wrong with child C since it doesn't work for them."

I bought this one after Littlelamb suggested it to me a while ago (thanks again), and it is really great!
We also have
Positive Discipline A-Z
and Happiest Toddler by Karp
those are also good.

I just started reading "Kids Are Worth It!" I bought it some time ago on Lisa's recommendation. :)
I have to say, I love, love, love it so far. It is the best book on this subject I've read to date. (And I've read a lot of books!)
I also like "How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen . . ." and "Positive Discipline from A to Z."
