View Full Version : why is this acceptable?

Alright, this might seem like a silly rant but this has totally been bothering me lately.
I work as a waitress and I keep a photo of my cat in my order book. I love my cat immensely and to me, she's like a child. And I know for a fact I'm not the only person who feels that way.
So I want to know WHY do people think it's okay to see her photo and say "I hate cats" or "she's not that cute".
Do I see their kids and say "oh I hate kids" or "your kid isn't cute"? Or "damn, that's a weird looking husband you've got there". No, because I have tact. And I can imagine that might piss a person or two off. So why don't people think before they make comments like that?
You know asshole, just because you hold animals in low regard doesn't mean I do.
*sigh*
I need Midol.

I think they're just being jerk-ish. In whatever one person finds joy in, another feels they simply must stomp and piss all over it because they are so miserable themselves.

Are we talking about coworkers or customers? While I don't think it's nice to tell someone that their pet is ugly, I also think keeping the photo somewhere where it is to be viewed by other people invites comment. The easy solution is to keep your photos in your wallet or someplace where you will only share them with people you know will say nice things. Otherwise, you're going to have to listen to people who are willing to share their opinions.

Yeah but that's just my point. I don't care what people's opinions are, it's just the fact that people think it is acceptable just to say whatever they want. I don't care if someone likes pets or even mine. But if I thought someone had an unattractive child and I said that, all hell would break loose. So, if someone isn't going to/can't make a rude comment about a kid or relative, then why a pet?
That's the point I'm trying to make.
This is why I would never, ever make it waiting tables. I would probably be a total bitch and comment about the ugliness of their loved one (child, relative, themselves) and get my butt fired!

It's coonsidered 'acceptable' because as you and I both know, people, in general, suck, and that is precisely WHY you have Princess' picture in your order book. She will never fail, disappoint or aggrevate you the way people will.

I agree with maxandmolly. Many people these days just find it OK to say whatever they're thinking. The idea of politeness is vastly underrated. Even people who rate politeness highly seem to get a kick out of publicly pointing out other peoples' lack of etiquette, which is rude in and of itself. What can you do? Customer service positions really stink that way. When I was doing that kind of thing, I'd just try the "kill them kindness" approach and let the rest roll off my back. It might help if you develop a mantra that you repeat to yourself. I used to tell all new hires that whenever someone was rude to them, they should just think about how that person could be having a really terrible day/life/etc and taking it out their problems on someone else was a way to vent, not directly related to the quality of service at all.

There are some people that are so ignorrant when it comes to basic common sense in the manners department. It irks me even more when these types of people try to pass of their bad behavior by self proclaiming and boasting that "they just tell it like it is" or are "extremely blunt." They just look even more foolish to people who know better. Try not to let it bother you too much (although it is hard!) Feel sorry for these people who choose to act in this way.

I think that it's more prevalent with cats, too. You remember those books from several years ago about "1001 Things to Do With a Dead Cat"? For some reason it's much more acceptable to make negative comments about a cat than a dog or a bird or any other kind of pet. It's really annoying.
I just ignore people who feel like they have to make tacky comments about cats - and my cat in particular.

You know, you would think ppl did not want to piss off their waiter/waitress. For all they know you could go back in the kitchen and spit in their food (not saying you would!). They must not be thinking when they say stuff like that.

I'm a dog person. But I also understand that people have different preferances and would never $hit on someone simply because they have a different preferance in animals. Cats are sweet and loving. My sister is a cat person and her cats are wonderful.
Consider it ignorance on their part. IGNORANCE because they should know better than blatently(sp?) make rude comments like they did. I'm sorry that happened to you:( .

That is totally unacceptable ! I would never say a thing like that to anyone. If I am shown a pic of a cat/dog/child/spouse or anyone/anything that I personally feel is unattractive I do not tell the person that . I simply smile and say something like "That's sweet" or "you must love him/her very much". Some people just have no manners!!!!!
It's not acceptable. I'd be tempted to say: that's my dear old fluffy... had her 18 years... she died last week. (sniffle)
Shame on people who don't know when to keep their yaps shut!

OMG that actually made me laugh out loud. :D I love it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's just plain mean/rude/stupid etc...Most of the people who have spouted off have been coworkers which I think is more annoying than anything. I have to see pictures of their kids and keep my mouth shut, I'd like the same courtesy.
Oh well, my cat is better than all of them. So hmph! ;)

Just wanted to chime in and say I have noticed this too! We have friends who have dogs (which aren't very well behaved!) and they will say "Oh I can't come to your house because of the cats." I am always so tempted to say "Heck, if I had known getting the cats was all it would take to keep you away, I'll go get more!" But I really love BTB's suggestion :D

Awww! Who can look at that sweet face and not think she is cute? She's adorable!
Why not just answer the people honestly? Just tell them that you are sorry that they have such terrible taste. ;)

She's a doll. What a startling eye color for a white cat! I think your restaurant attracts lousy patrons.

That's so lame. I was a server forever and kept a picture of my kid in my book. No one ever commented, period. How dumb that people have to go out of their way to be insulting...
She is freakin adorable, and I'd probably grab your book out of your hand for a better look! Dumbasses...

Some people dont seem to think before they speak. I have a friend that has a pug, and she puts up with that same kind of crap. Pets are like children and I think it's perfectly fine to have a picture of them with you.
I love white kitties! I would give you an extra big tip if I saw that cutie. :)

At Disney, we're allowed to have pictures in our books, but never allowed to hold our book so that people can see the pictures. I personally don't want to see pictures of people's cats, dogs, loved ones, etc. while I'm at a restaurant. I would never say anything rude, but you kinda get what you get when you have them out there in the public eye like that. Sorry.

Well, in general there are a TON of people who just wanna bring a sista down. F 'em!!
:D
But I also can't understand what people have against cats. My ILs *still* insist my 2 gentle, loving, quiet cats who have never ever in 7 years ever hissed, scratched, bit or otherwise threatened anyone might just find a way to injure/murder my 4 month old son. It is soooo beyond my comprehansion how that would even be possible.

Your cat is so beautiful - and it's startling how much she looks like she's smiling!
To answer your original question . . . it's not acceptable. People are just morons sometimes.
And your kitty is very, very cute! I really have a soft spot for white furballs like her. :)

Aw thank you! And thanks everyone for your compliments! I will be sure to pass them on to her. Goodness knows that cat lives for compliments. Hehe. :D
