View Full Version : What brand of disposable diaper do you use?

Consumer Reports gives all three of the "big three" high ratings, so we're not sure which to use. I've also been given the opinion by a friend that once you start with one brand, if it works for you, don't switch. Apparently babies become sensitive to that type of change? So, anyway, if this is true, we want to make a good choice right off the bat.

I think it depends on the kid. DS could care less. We use Pampers Cruisers during the day and Huggies Overnight at night, but if the store is out, I'll buy a different brand. Huggies Supreme don't work as well for us, I think, because DS has chunky legs. I don't care for Huggies Baby Shaped or Costco brand.

With DD, I've used Pampers Baby Dry and Swaddlers. She is sensitive and picky but didn't seem to have any issues with switching.

we used and loved swaddlers in the beginning. the swaddlers change to cruisers at size 3 i think and i did a comparison with huggies baby-shaped and cruisers and like the huggies better now. he didn't have any problem with the switch.

We use Pampers Swaddlers. For some reason, I really hate Huggies. This is pretty irrational because I primarily use cloth diapers and only use disposies when we go out and overnight. How I managed to develop such a preference for Pampers is beyond me :).

I agree that it depends on the kid.

We have used Pampers since Day 1. We started out with Baby Dry, then switched to Cruisers when DD was more mobile.

We received a few packs of Huggies as gifts, and I did buy a pack of Huggies one time because I had a great coupon and they were on sale, but Huggies just did not work for us. DD's diaper would leak or she would have a blow-out almost every single time she wore Huggies. They just did not fit her as snug in the legs as Pampers do. We have never had leak or blow-out issues with Pampers.

We've had leaks using Huggies and a blowout using the Costco Kirkland brand so we are sticking to Pampers Cruisers for now. I actually liked the Costco brand dipes but all it took was that one major blowout to make me change. :)

We started out using Huggies Newborn and switched to Pampers after my DD had leaks. We are now in Cruisers and I still love Pampers. I do not plan on switching anytime soon.

I know this could lead to a potentially disgusting answer, but what exactly is a "blowout"? Is that where the poo escapes? (Sorry!!!)

Yup!

We use Pampers Swaddlers and love them.

We've tried them all, pretty much; I have an almost-2 year old still in diapers and my oldest was in diapers until she was 39 months, so I've bought a lot of them here. Mostly, I buy Huggies, because they are cheap at Costco and I don't have to mess with a coupon (I hate coupons). I thought Pampers and Luvs worked fine, and never bothered with getting the Cruisers or the Huggies Supreme. I have tried a lot of generics (BRU, Target, Walmart, Kirkland, etc) and never liked them. They seemed flimsy and really drooped (like out of the bloomers) when they got full.

My husband and I could not figure out the difference between "regular" Huggies and Huggies Supreme. Do you know what it is?

I am another Huggie Hater. Like another poster I had bought them once when they were having a great sale/coupon, etc. They were terrible- leaks, didn't fit right, and the stupid tab ripped off of one when I was pulling it over to stick on!

So, needless to say- I use Pampers Cruisers. :) I keep some Brooks brand generics at my parents, and those actually aren't bad for generics.

I know everybody is different though, so def. try a few out in the beginning to see what works best for you and your baby.

This is so funny because I just got home from buying Pampers on sale and was thinking about how a few months ago, I would never have bought Huggies. Yet, for the last few months I've bought more Huggies than Pampers. Started out as Pampers only but then because we were watching our budget more, started to buy more Huggies and now will buy either that's on sale. Tried a CVS generic once and it didn't work so well. I do agree that the tabs rip off the Huggies diapers more easily - that happened a few times in the beginning but I'm more used to it now. So I voted for "switch between anything on sale" (well, mostly anything). Haven't tried Luvs at all, though. DD doesn't seem to notice a difference.

CVS has 2 different brand diapers. We use CVS Supreme brand(Cuddlers then Explorers). The supreme's are a copy of the Pampers. They are pretty soft, and have stretchy sides, and don't have a scent to them. I also really like the HEB baby diapers with Clifford on them. I was really impressed with those as well.

I have tried pretty much every brand, and I have had leaks in all of them. I didn't love the Huggies or Pampers that much to justify the extra price difference.

I prefer the Pampers Swaddlers, but we are using Huggies now because we bought a case when I was still pregnant and I can't justify not using them. I actually haven't had any problems with them, but I still prefer Pampers. The only time we've had blowouts is when it's been time to transition to the next size. I will say that I hated the Pampers Baby Dry (got a package at the hospital)-they have no elastic around the waist area and it felt like they just did not fit him right.

I voted for Pampers, but we have Kirkland at my parents' house. Haven't tried them overnight yet, which is when DS leaks. We use Swaddlers during the day, but I think DS is going to be moving out of the Size 2's. Right now we're using Huggies Supremes at night and they work great. I definitely think they hold more than the regular Huggies.

I think it depends on your kid. I used to hate Huggies, but now that she is bigger, they are great. I actually had a blowout the other day in Pampers Cruizers. So who knows. I totally DISLKIKE Luvs. They are perfumed and give me a headache. She also has gotten a yeast infection twice after using Luvs.

In the beginning, before she crawled, pulled up, sat up, rolled around, a generic brand worked great - Krogers. We moved and there are not Kroger's here. She is allergic to White Cloud (Walmart)

We've always used Pampers (Swaddlers and then Cruisers) and LOVE them! We've tried Huggies, Luvs and Kirkland (Costco) brand and they all felt cheap and paper-y (sp?).

I agree with many posters that it depends on your baby. DD is long and slender--basically the only diaper that fits her are the Pampers Swaddlers. I really like them because they are comfortable on her and keep everything in. Huggies were awful on her. We tried several times (because we had a bunch), but we had to give them away.

As far as diapers go, Swaddlers seem comfy.

ANGB I think the Huggies Supreme have some kind of lotion in them (like a Puffs tissue, I guess). We use those and the regular Huggies, and haven't noticed a difference (or had any problems with either!)

I'm so surprised by this poll. Based on the real estate Huggies holds in our local Target, I was sure that would be the leading brand here. We registered for all Huggies products (wipes, diapers, etc.), but now I'm rethinking that. The only thing is, I'm not sure if Pampers had their own brand of wipes and whatever else we registered for. They must, though, so I'll have to check again.

Quick question: Does Pampers have a specific diaper for the newborn stage?

We've used both huggies and pampers newborn diapers. It seems that the huggies fit her better but I like how the pampers have a meshy liner in them like a maxi pad to seperate the wetness from baby butt

ANGB- Yes, it is called Pampers Newborn. It is $10 for 40 diapers (same as Huggies Newborn). HTH!

We use Pampers, but only because they're the only ones that don't leak on our DD. All of our friends use Huggies on their kids for the same reason. It totally depends on the child.

ANGB - Pampers has Swaddlers, too, for newborns. They're stretchy-sided and really nice. We love Swaddlers and the next size up, Cruisers. :)

ANGB
10-05-2005, 02:50 PM
OK, so then what is the difference between regular newborn Pampers and Pampers Swaddlers? The stretchy sides?

Another side question: Approximately how many newborn diapers did you actually use? And then what about stages 1, 2 and 3? We're not sure how many packages to register for.

Pampers Swaddlers rocked my world. Loved the NewBaby ones for when he was first born.
I was given Huggies and they were so useless I literally threw them out. As were the Target & CVS brand ones I tried.
Am now in Pampers Cruisers because he wears size 3, and will never stray again :).

FYI: from what I gather, Swaddlers have a very soft inside and outside. Almost cottony to the touch. The sides are soft and stretchy, and the front is low enough to not aggravate the belly button. And the diaper itself is thin but very absorbant.
The Pampers BabyDry are cheaper, so the lining isn't as soft and I think the diaper itself is a little different (thicker maybe?).
Cruisers start at size 3 and are like Swaddlers but meant for more active babies (rolling, moving, crawling, walking).

Depends on the size of your baby. I'd register for 100-150 each of size 1 and 2.

As for wipes, he responded best to the Pampers Sensitive ones 'with chamomile' - no scent, very sturdy yet soft, gentle on the tush.

We use the Huggies Supremes. We do get some leaks, but they are the best we have found since with others we will have to change the bed and everything.

We went through about 80- 100 newborn diapers although we could have done a size one sooner since the laundry got so much easier after the switch.

we used Huggies at first- they seemed to fit DS better. But once he was out of size 1-2, I didn't like the Huggies anymore. Now we use Pampers Cruisers and we like them a lot.

I'm one of the peole who switch between brands. We've used Pampers (both Swaddlers and Baby Dry), Huggies, Luvs, and the Target brand. We've used all with virtually no problems. In fact, we've never had a blowout or a leak with any diaper. I guess we've just been lucky.

Here's my take on each of the diapers:

Pampers Swaddlers: Soft, stretchy, smell horrible when full of urine

Pampers Baby Dry: Not as soft or as stretchy, cut a bit trimmer, great absorption

Luvs: Bigger cut, perfumey smell that disappears once on baby, absorbs well

Huggies: stretchy, soft, trim cut, absorb well

Target: not as soft, more paper-y, absorbs well

I think we used newborn sized dipes for the first 3-4 weeks. We switched over at week 4 and have just started switching over to size 2 this week (and DS is 11 weeks this week).

I don't think you should register for many diapers of any kind, really. Maybe 100 or so in each size, as another posted recommended. DS is longer than babies a month older, but leaner than some who are younger - it would have been tough for me to predict how long he'd be in any given size. (ie, how many diapers he'd need)

FYI - I'm another "switcher" and it totally depends on my son's size and shape during any given week. Neither Huggies nor Pampers newborn sizes fit him well at all - leaks everywhere. Target brand worked great the first three or 4 weeks, then Huggies fit better, then Pampers fit better...then he went up a size and we did Target and Huggies. He stayed in size 1's for just a couple of weeks, so we never tried Pampers. Also went from 2s to 3s very quickly. At 5.5 months old he's in size 3s, and the Costco Kirkland brand fit him best for the last 3 weeks, but he's leaked a bit the last week, so I'm going to buy Huggies next and see how it goes.

Also - if you have a big baby, DC may not be in newborn size for very long at all, so you probably should not stock up too much on those either. (On of my friends just had a 9 lb baby who didn't fit into newborn diapers at all - straight to size 1!)

Sorry this is so long -the short answer is to make sure you have gift receipts for everything, including diapers!!

DS can care less what type of diapers we use on him. We use either Pampers Cruisers or Huggies Supreme (whichever I get on sale) during the day, and Huggies Overnight at bedtime.

When DS was born, we started out with Huggies Baby-Shape and Pampers Swaddlers. MIL got some cheapo diapers for us, and they suck, complete waste. She also got Luvs which I didn't like either since it was really plastic-like, I felt it would trap moisture (it was summer), and total potential for diaper rash.

We are still in search of the perfect diaper.

Loved Pampers Swaddlers initially. When I got to size 2 swaddlers, the meshed liner inside kept sticking to my baby's booty and leaving marks that looked itchy to me. I also don't like how there's no elastic in the back like the Huggies. Poop seems to always go up her back. I love the new side tabs they've added to the front of the diaper though. Do the Cruisers have these front tabs? Do they also have the meshed liner? I may give Cruisers a try when she grows out of size 2.

Right now we are using Huggies baby shaped. Don't love them, don't hate them. Seems to me now that DD only poops every 2-3 days, doesn't matter what diaper she wears... they all leak. Would love to be convinced otherwise though!

summerbaby- I just started my DD in the cruisers last week and I love them so far. They do have the same front tabs as the swaddlers, but the package that I opened up does not have the kotex mesh inside. I might have an old package though, because it was missing the Pampers Points to Grow Code inside. I'll let you know when I purchase another package!

More Swaddlers fans here. I tried huggies in the very beginning and didn't really like them (leaked for us). We have had some poop blowouts in Swaddlers, but I think it was how she was positioned at the time or the diaper was very full (overnight and couldn't hold the poop in the AM).

I have also used the Supreme CVS (cradlers) and they really aren't bad and can be half the price. I bought a few packages buy one get one free and use them during the day when I am home or if she just pooped. Even when she poops they have been fine. They are pretty soft and have stretchy sides.

I hated Baby Dry Pampers b/c they weren't soft and didn't have elastic tabs, they just didn't fit well until she was somewhere in the middle of the size range. I think with Swaddlers you can use the bigger size earlier since they stretch so much. This was helpful since the Newborn swaddlers are pretty pricey and you can get better value at the warehouse club on the size 1/2.

I agree with others that you should really buy some smaller packs first to try them out. I ended up with 192 of those Baby Dry diapers b/c I bought a case and it was torture trying to use them up.

I have used them all at some point or another. I really have found no difference between expensive and cheaper ones.

Among the cheapies, I like the Target premium brand and Walmart's premium brand. I don't buy the lower tier version because they felt really flimsy.

We use Huggies & Pampers. I tried the Target brand of diapers when DS was a newborn and for me, they leaked.

my dd has very sensitive skin and the only diapers she can wear are the pampers baby dry (no fragrance) and the only wipes i can use on her are the lansinoh brand. i am NOT a fan of pampers baby dry (she has very chunky legs and they are too hard to use) but it is the only option i have short of CD'ing her.

i personally loved Huggies (this is what i used when she was first born) and the pampers swaddlers (tried these too but they have fragrance which irritated her skin too. and myshel is right - they smell weird).

i agree you shouldn't buy too many before the baby is here. that said, target will accept any unopened package of diapers so you can always return/exchange them.

We stick pretty much with Huggies Supreme (size 1s) and Pampers Swaddlers (size 1s or size 1/2). I think the supremes for during the day and the swaddlers for night. We've tried the Baby-Dry but the size 1s were too big for DD. They are still a little big for her but I'm using up the package.

I got a package of Luvs and WhiteCloud at my shower. The Luvs just don't fit DD good. They were too big when I first tried them and now they seem to be too small. I'm trying to use them up but I can say that we won't be buying them in the future. The WCs just didn't seem to work very good either. I used them but probably won't be using them in the future.

We recently just bought a box of swaddlers at Sam's in size 1/2s. I wasn't sure if they were going to work the same but they do. I'm really going to miss the swaddlers when we go to size 3s. We first got the swaddlers at the hospital.

I like Pampers Swaddlers. That said, most recently we've been using Huggies due to the great coupons. I also found out about a diaper manufacturer in our town. They have a fantastic deal on seconds, approx. 120 diapers for $7. Their "first quality" ones are 160 for $20. I picked up some of their "size 2" but DS is still a bit small for them. Can't wait to see how they hold up.

I'm one of the few with little to no brand loyalty. I just can't justify spending extra when the less expensive brands work fine for us.

We used Pampers Swaddlers in the newborn size, b/c we had coupons and we got quite a few packages from the hospital. DD was in newborn sizes for a while and we used those and the Especially for Baby Supremes from Babies R Us/Toys R Us.

When we moved up a size, we stuck with the Especially for Baby Supremes for a while and tried the regular ones too, (i.e., not Supremes). Then, we got a few cases of Huggies and Pampers Baby Dry 1/2's from Costco/BJ's. I don't really like the Baby Dry's b/c of the tape tabs, but they work just fine for us. I liked the Huggies the best when DD was still solely breastfed. That little extra flap in the back and did a great job of preventing blowouts.

DD has been in size 3s for almost a year now. And blowouts just haven't been an issue since she started solids. We've used mostly Huggies and Especially for Baby, and a couple cases of Baby Dry - whatever I can get for the best price. They all worked well enough. She started leaking overnight maybe a month or so ago, so we started putting her in size 4 Especially for Baby for nighttime.

My approach, get a mid-low priced diaper and see how it works. (I watch for when Esp for Baby dipes are on sale at TRU/BRU for $15 a case, like right now at BRU. I actually like them quite a bit - they're very absorbant, plus, they don't have licensed characters on them.) If we don't have any problems with them, I don't see the need to spend more than twice as much money for another brand. Sure they're probably not as fancy as Cruisers, but these things just hold pee and poop, ya' know! :P :D As long as DD doesn't get rashes or anything like that, we'll stick with this plan. (Although, I'll admit, that I'm reluctant to try other store brands now that I've found one that works really well for us.)
