If You Love Something, Get Rid of It: Nick and Jessica to Divorce

The image at right probably won’t be on the newsstands until 10 A.M. or so, but we don’t see why you should wait for the news: Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, America’s Newlyweds, have called it quits. For those of you so self-loathing as to closely follow these things, you’ll recall that in May, E! online reported that the couple had filed for divorce, only to mysteriously retract the story an hour later. But you knew, right then, that this was coming, didn’t you?

The couple is waiting to make an official announcement later in the month (at the appropriate career opportunity, we’re sure), but according to Us Weekly’s scoop — kept so under wraps that employees were not allowed to receive their advance issues yesterday, presumably for fear that People might rape and pillage the story — the marriage has been dead for some time. Well, duh.

The article has a laundry list of contributions to the break-up (mostly blamed on Jessica), including creepy-dad Joe Simpson, Jessica’s “diva” behavior, and her fondness for whiskey on the rocks. One of those ubiquitous sources close to the couple says, “Jessica’s the problem. She’s not the girl America fell in love with anymore.” Oh, young America, were you ever really in love with her? Or were you just lusting? C’mon, be honest.

E! Online reported this months ago, but were forced to retract after they got some major heat from Jessica's people. I really think it was over by then...but they wanted to hold off on an announcement until after Dukes of Hazzard (although it wouldn't have made a difference...she got horrid reviews).

I agree that it seems like Jessica really let the fame thing get to her head. I have always felt bad for Nick. He always seemed like such a great husband and a nice guy on the show. She always seemed like she had better things to do than love and appreciate her husband.

I heard on the radio this morning that some girl in Columbus, OH was saying that she hooked up with Nick after a (college football?) game. Apparently, he got her number and they went out and she went to his hotel room and all. Jess was nowhere in sight. This was right before Nick & Jessica's performance before the Redskins football game in September.

I really wished that Jess would get over herself and realize that she had a great man. They are the only celebrity wedding that makes me cry because they really went for it with love and good intentions. I hope w/ this divorce she gets the boot from Hollywood and all praise Nick for putting up w/ such a snooty brat! He seemed to always stay true to himself.

I don't know why. As soon as I heard they were doing The Newlyweds, I thought it would end like this. Having cameras broadcast your first year of marriage is not a good way to cultivate intimacy in your relationship. And of the handful of shows I watched, Jessica always seemed immature and selfish. I thought Nick seemed like a great guy and he deserves better.

Still, I hate to see any marriage, especially one as public as this one go down the drain. Too bad.

ITA with placing at least a majority of the blame on Jessica. On the show, Nick always seemed so down to earth, doing stuff around the house and whatnot, whereas she always seemed like quite the little diva-even before she made it to where she is today.

I really think Nick was in it for the long haul, whereas she maybe felt like she didn't have a chance to "live" before she got married, and is doing so now. If that is the case, she is really f'ed up.

This could be expected, though. Remember how she maintained that she didn't care if she sold records like Brit or Christina, she didn't need to dance around and show skin. She was a preacher's daughter from the South and would stay true to that. Just last month or so she was in some major magazine talking about how glad she was she broke out of the "Southern Baptist bubble" and moved to L.A. Okaaaay.

Let's not throw stones, Jess.

Personally, I don't think either of them cheated. And I watched the E! special on the Simpsons that aired over the summer, and Jessica admitted that the pre-marriage break-up was her fault, because she was young and thought she wanted to date other people before settling down. And then 9/11 happened and she realized how much she still loved Nick, and they got engaged soon thereafter. Yes, it is pathetic that I remember such things.:o

On Driven or E! True Hollywood Story, Jessica herself said she broke up with him out because she thought she was missing out, and wanted to "date around". After 9-11, she realized how she felt for him, and called him.

According to this Friday's issue of Us Weekly the popular twosome, who have been shooing away break up rumors for the past year, are no longer together. But Nick's representative tells ET that the reports are "not true."

In a joint statment on behalf of Nick and Jessica his rep says: "Nick and Jessica have not separated. Rumors to the contrary are simply not true."

The pair were last seen together publicly on September 11 when they sang a duet at an NFL football game. According to the magazine, rumors of a split started to swirl again when Jessica arrived solo (and without her wedding ring) to her sister ASHLEE's 21st birthday in Las Vegas last weekend and Lachey, who was scheduled to be there, was a no-show.

A friend of a friend who worked on the set of the Dukes of Hazzard said the Jessica/Johnny Knoxville rumors were true, and I'd believe it. But I don't think that "drove" them apart. If you watch the second season of Newlyweds they were barely speaking by the end.

If you're just tuning in, you may or may not have hear by now that Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson are calling it quits and putting an end to their almost three year marriage.

The couple have secretly been split for close to two months now, sources tell Us Weekly, who have the former Newlyweds on their cover this week.

"There will be no forced reconciliation," a source tells the pub. "They should have just ended it six months ago but there was always another business reason not to break up. The marriage kept going for all the wrong reasons and they ended up hating each other."

Jessica's father, Joe Simpson, is said to be the driving force in keeping the problems concealed.

And, while only Nick & Jessica will ever truly only be the two people to really know what went wrong in their marriage, Us Weekly places the blame solely on Simpson's shoulders. And, it is quite startling how apparently one-sided (in favor of Lachey) the article is. Now, we're not here to defend Jessica Simpson, but somebody sure has an axe to grind!

So, what led to the divorce? According to Us, Simpson's growing stardom, her increased independence and her newfound love of the Hollywood party scene was ultimately responsible for the split.

"Jessica's the problem, a source tells the pub. "She not the girl America fell in love with anymore."

Digging the knife deeper into Simpson's back, Us Weekly goes on to write, "Signs of strife had been apparent to observers for well over a year as, not coincidentally, Simpson underwent a transformation from a C-list sweetheart to an A-list temptress. Meanwhile, Lachey, by all accounts, remained the affable,down-to-earth jock." Oh yeah, we're sure Nick Lachey is an angel!

Simpson and Lachey tried to keep up appearances for as long as they could, but the couple didn't do a very good job at it. Lachey barely visited Simpson while she was filming Dukes in Louisiana. Jessica took a habit of not wearing her wedding ring and the former homebody also discovered the newfound joys of clubbing.

Says Us Weekly, "What's more, former homebody Simpson became a club fixture, one night partying alongside Wilmer Valderrama at Spider club in LA, the next night dancing on the seats at Spider Club - only to turn up at NYC's Marquee looking more than a little tipsy. MEOW! We didn't know you could be so catty Us. WE LOVE IT!

Then there was that now infamous night where she "slept" with Bam Margera.

Add to all that rumors that Simpson also had an affair with Johnny Knoxville, which sources tell us that folks at Us Weekly and Star allegedly confirmed to be true but didn't print for fear of being sued by Joe Simpson.

Papa Joe also had a role in the demise of the Simpson/Lachey union. To put it mildly, Nick hates Joe!

Joe would not only accompany Nick and Jessica to awards show, but he would also go with them on vacation and be breathing down their necks every waking second.

It seems now that former good girl Jessica is not only rebelling against her husband, but also against her father as well.

"Joe has no control over Jessica anymore," a source tells Us. Jessica won't listen to anyone!"

And, to make things even juicier, Simpson has also become professionally "difficult" as well.

Jessica pulled out of cover shoots for Teen People and Rolling Stone, arranged to help support sister Ashlee's new album. (Teen People has since been shot, and Rolling Stone is still attempting to reschedule.)

Lachey, who has not been seen in public with Simpson since they sang together last month at a football game, is working as a commentator for ESPN and will soon be releasing an album that no one will buy.

As for Simpson, though her marriage to Lachey is caput, she was all smiles in Vegas over the weekend. She's young, she's soon-to-single and a slut! Plus, she has a new album coming out and the lead single is called Fired Up. Oh, how true!

Although looking at the pics from Ashlee's 21st birthday, she didn't look to disheveled to me. Hammered, yes.

That was a clear sign to me too, Sarahh. Nick ALWAYS has his ring on, at least every single time he has been photographed.

Of course, Papa Simpson will elude to the fact that Nick was making a mid-morning run for coffee after having just woken up, and forgot to put on his ring...blah blah... you know the rest. It seems the more defensive these people get over the tabloids, the more it seems like they are covering something.

But I don't know, I am just a commonfolk ;)

I don't know if Nick has an "excuse" for not wearing his wedding band, but my husband often doesn't wear his. When he works in the clay (as in pottery), he takes it off. When he uses chemicals at work (research) he takes it off. When he runs, he takes it off. Wearing a ring doesn't make you married or not ... just something to keep in mind.

So I live in a VERY college-football obsessed city in the mid-west. A couple of weeks ago Nick was here to help ESPN broadcast a game & according to a bunch of local radio stations, he ended up taking a random girl back to his hotel at the end of the night. One of the tabloids has the full story naming the girl, but I forget which one. The girl's friends have been calling in to the radio stations to "verify" the story all week. It's not hard at all, but mayeb it't just not a big deal to either of them if the other goes out without a ring? I have mine off far more than I have ti on and it's jsut not an issue for eith erone of us. I dont' love jewlery and fidn that it knocks against things, catches them gets bumped and ends up hurtign or scratching my finger, etc. so I just rarely wear it. If it bothered Dh then I suppose I'd compromise a bit, but he's fine with it. Perhaps Jessica and Nick are the same way. There is no mandate that says a married person must have her or his rign on every minute, so why would they need to go buy another ring if it doen't feel important to them?

The other night, one of the shows (ET, Extra) showed a picture of Nick and Jessica embracing and very happy at a London Airport (Heathrow I believe.) Anywhoo, she made a point of showing her wedding ring, and they are apparently on vacay together over there. Their 3rd Wedding Anniversary is coming up so I wouldn't be surprised if they are on some kind of relaxation trip. Good for them!

I don't know if I find one prettier than the other b/c they have 2 totally diff looks, but if this girl can look that pretty without the help of a professional make-artist, hairstylist, and million dollar outfits than I think she could def give Jessica a run for her money. Also, I'm pretty sure the girl is a college student b/c it says that small pic is her from her Facebook which is like myspace for Colleges (I think). I agree with it being much more impressive to look pretty without the help of professionals. Even if they look about the same in pictures, that is saying a lot for that girl. I do see the similarity with Ashlee and that girl, but she is like a MUCH prettier version of Ashlee. I think Ashlee has a really mannish look about her. And she is really annoying too - especially on the first SNL (and not just because of her lip synching).

I also agree with that shirt being a bit obscene. I would never wear anything like that or want my 17 or 18 year old daughter to either. I think there has got to be some truth to all of these stories of them splitting. I mean, the tabloids don't go after EVERY celeb that is married (Freddie Prinze/Sarah Michelle Gellar, Julia Roberts/Danny Moder spring to mind). There has got to be some type of behavior that we ordinary folk aren't privy to that is causing all these "rumors".

Dangit! I wish they had the story online... The deal with Nick Lachey and the young chick was covered in a story in the Columbus alternative weekly paper, "Columbus Alive." Nick Lachey was in Columbus for ESPN, with Kirk Herbstreit, for the OSU-Texas game and also for a North-South city high school football game. Lachey apparently met the girl at the city game. And from what I read, he and his bodyguard brought the girl and her friend for a couple hours back to the hotel they were staying at.

I dont know much about paul newman and I dont know who joanne woodward is, but it sounds like they also have a very strong relationship according to how long they have been married. I NEVER thought that they would make it as a couple.
She is WAY too immature to continue being married.
It always struck me that she was marrying Nick for the wrong and childish reasons. "Oh I'll be so pretty in my dress, all the people will look at me and I'll FINALLY get to have sex and see what the big deal is all about."

Even on their TV show, she never came across as a wife.
It seemed to me that she was playing a role, the ditsy hot blonde who gets to act like a tomboy, who says dumb things, shows off her boobs and oh yeah, every once in awhile, pretend to care about her husband's feelings.
I never bought it and I hope that this whole thing is over quickly to stop the pain for everyone involved, including us.
