View Full Version : Movies You DON'T Recommend

I think the title says it all. Post movies you've seen and want to warn others about. (Friendly) Differences of opinion welcome. :)
This week I've seen two really shitty movies.
The first was Layer Cake. I'd heard all these good things about it. Bottom line? It bored the shit out of me. I kept checking the time to find out how much longer I was going to have to sit through it, which I don't consider a very good sign that the plot has gripped me much. Just didn't care for it. At all.
The second was A Lot Like Love with the new Mr. Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and Amanda Peet. I'd wanted to see this from the previews and never did because of the reviews. Why didn't I pay attention to the reviews? This thing was so choppy and disorienting it wasn't possible to forgive its faults even given that its a romantic comedy. It still sucked. There were cute moments, don't get me wrong. And I finished this one. But I didn't care what happened or whether I finished it.
Feel free to chime in with dissenting opinions!

If you are into thrillers or horror movies, don't waste your time with "Cursed" or "The Grudge". Cursed was just way too predictable. And The Grudge was just plain stupid, with no definable story line.
Another one that I really wanted to get into and just couldn't was "Prozac Nation" with Christina Ricci. Just not enough to it to really hold my attention.

A few weeks ago I saw The Brothers Grimm which is 2 hours of my life I will never get back.
I also didn't enjoy Good Night and Good Luck that much. I felt like it was an hour and a half of beating a dead horse with a stick... we know McCarythyism was bad and we know how it ended. I was falling asleep during the last 30 mins.

The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher... It was totally disturbing.

Some of our recent Netflix selections that have just bit it:
The Mummy Returns -- NOT my choice. Even DH admitted this was the one of the worst movies he'd ever seen.
The Forgotten -- I should have listened to the bad reviews, but I was intrigued by the premise. This was one of those movies that started out fine, but the ending was just ridiculous and stupid. If you're going to make a thriller, you need a great ending. This one did not.
Magnolia - I love Boogie Nights (also by this director) and had wanted to see this for forever. While I thought it was very well-written and acted, the movie.just.ended, making no sense. Maybe I'm conventional, but I like some resolution in my endings, or at least, endings that don't leave you thinking, Huh?
I loved the Butterfly Effect.
My vote for worst movie goes to Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy. Hated it!

I liked The Butterfly Effect too. :)
However, I will second the suggestion that people avoid The Forgotten. Just when you think that movie can't get any worse, it does. I also agree that people should avoid The Brothers Grimm.
I also suggest avoiding Van Helsing and Jeepers Creepers.

DH and I were so looking forward to The Life Aquatic. But the whole movie we felt like we were missing something....like the entire storyline. It was really just unbelievably strange.
I also have to agree about Magnolia. We saw it in a sold out theatre and everyone left saying WTF?

Recently, Ju-on (the original Japanese version of The Grudge) it was just stupid and gory, and not really scary at all.
And, from years back, I think my most hated movie is Palmetto with Woody Harrison. Just boring and stupid, blah.

10-05-2005, 09:16 AM
I will also suggest not seeing The Forgotten, Van Helsing, and Magnolia, but I really loved The Life Aquatic and Butterfly Effect.
Another one I would stay away from is The Village. Really boring, and took waaaayyy too long to get to the point/plot of the movie. Even though it was only about a 1½ hour movie, it felt much longer.
I’d like my time back from watching Sin City as well.

"Eyes Wide Shut" And, since I have seen it TWICE, I have SIX hours I will never get back.

I agree that Van Helsing was terrible. I slept through 90% of it because it was so bad.
Another one that I didn't really enjoy even though it got rave reviews was Napoleon Dynamite. The jokes were so bad. That's 2 hours of my life that I wish I had back.
PG-rated
10-05-2005, 02:15 PM
But the bad jokes are the whole point of Napoleon Dynamite! :D
I hated Your Friends and Neighbors, although I would recommend it to anyone looking to lose all hope in humanity.
I was really looking forward to Broken Flowers, but found it so...blah. And I'm usually fine with slow-moving plots and unresolved endings, but this was like he just picked a random point and turned the camera off.
Boogeyman staring that guy from 7th Heaven was SO SO SO stupid. I was just looking for somethign good and scary .. didn't find that in this movie!

I have to say the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- the old one was much better and Johnny Depp was too creepy for words in this one. and you couldn't understand the Oompa Loompa's at all.
other's on my list:
Life Acquatic
Accidental Tourist (old. . but horrible)
Boogeyman
the second XXX
Sahara- I love Matthew McConaghey but even his sexiness couldn't save this one
the second Tranpsorter. . so ridiculous.

Little Black Book Me and my bridesmaids watched this the night before my wedding while laying on air mattressig thinking it was going to be a really great chick flick ugh it sucked!
I'm sure there's more but can't think of them off the top of my head...

Okay. There are so many movies that have already been posted that I have to disagree with. Maybe its because I'm an actress and marrying an artist..therefore I enjoy the movies most people don't but here is goes.
Sin City, Closer, The Good Girl, and About Schmidt are some of my favorite movies. So if you were thinking about watching them, give them a chance.
To add to the don't bother going to see list I will say All Matrix movies. I think Keanu Reeves is the worst actor on this planet!

Sahara- I love Matthew McConaghey but even his sexiness couldn't save this one
Glad I saw this, when it came out my DH wasn't sure if he wanted to see it. He read the book the movie is based on and he was already cringing watching the previews for it!
Off the top of my head is Serenity~ DH and I saw it opening day after months of anticipation(it was the continuation of the Fox show Firefly.) :(
I have to agree with the posters who mentioned VanHelsing. I wanted to enjoy the movie(Hugh Jackman! ;) ) But the movie never seemed to get started.
America's Sweethearts~ It looked funny but it seemed flat.
Jerry Maguire- Haven't seen it in years but I did not see the appeal.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow! I want that hour+ back. I thought it was dreadful.

10-07-2005, 09:23 AM
I so have to agree with so many of the ones already posted:
The Grudge & The Village: I was totally waiting for those movies and totally let down. I thought both were just incredibly dumb.
The Little Black Book: I watched this while in the hospital and it couldn't even hold my attention, so it certainly wasn't interesting for me. Another one that was really really stupid recently was White Noise. I was so let down by that movie. I am really into suspense horror films ala The Ring, The Blair Witch, etc. and I was so expecting it to be like that. It so wasn't the case!
And Napoleon Dynamite was one of my all time favorite movies. I totally went into it thinking it was going to be the stupidest movie ever, but by the time it was over, I was won over and now I watch it all the time! :D

To add to the don't bother going to see list I will say All Matrix movies. I think Keanu Reeves is the worst actor on this planet!
I enjoy the first one because I can sit back and make fun of Keanu. From a review I wrote of the movie right after it came out for a college project:
"...his Keanu-ness still shined through when another character directing him through a building had to tell him to go 'Left. No, your other left.' He even defied the fact that if you are killed in the matrix, you die since your body cannot survive without your mind. Yet, Keanu did even better after he had no brain to get in the way.
...You can laugh at Keanu even though he doesn't ever say "dude" (I think it was close a few times.)"
Of course, I like stupid humor and even enjoy the Bill & Ted movies...

Closer I think it's worth seeing, but there were things about this movie that were just wrong. I think Julia Roberts was horribly miscast. However, Clive Owen and Jude Law together in one movie, ladies. Need I say more?
Anyway, I love this subject! But I also hate this subject because I get so worked up when people like a movie that I consider awful.
Also, there was an interesting article in the NY Times a while back that made the distinction between awful movies that aren't trying to be good anyway, and movies that are trying to be good but fail miserably.
Here are some of the former (i.e., awful movies that I love to hate): A Perfect Storm, The Skulls (laughed my ass off the entire time!), the 2nd Matrix (ha ha Keanu!). There are more, why is my mind drawing a blank?
Ok, now the serious stuff. Life is Beautiful is my pick for the worst movie ever. It is awful, not because it mixed humor with tragedy, but because it failed miserably at doing so. Awful and offensive. Offensively bad!
What else? AI, Pay it Forward...
The Village - I agree, sucked ass. I also didn't get Napolean Dynamite. I know what it was going for, I'm just not into it.

so, against someone's earlier advice, I just watched the Wedding Date.
totally agree it should be on this list. . really bad. and was Debra Messing pregnant when she made this movie? she looked a little thicker than usual.
and I am sure this isn't the most popular move out there. . but back in the late 90's or very early 2000's. Thin Red Line came out right around the same time as Saving Private Ryan. I literally fell asleep in the theatre and I love movies. . never even half doze off. that one put me down for the count!

I can't believe someone hated Hero so much- one of my favorite movies in the world!

10-08-2005, 12:07 AM
I didn't like Hero, either. I think if the script was reworked in a less (played out, tired, boring)Tarantino style, and had a different director, the story would be great. The only video I've ever returned because it was too bad to watch--Storytelling. If you see it, don't rent it, I warned you. An indie film that's way too pretentious.
But I'm surprised at some of the movies listed! I'm going to have to start coming to this thread for movie recommendations! Maybe it's just because people aren't saying much about why they didn't like certain films.
DH & I liked Royal Tenenbaums, and along those same lines I Heart Huckabees. Huckabees is all based on existentialism, so that will make or break it for some people. Also really loved Life Aquatic, but maybe you have to have some appreciation for Jacques Cousteau for that one? Adaptation was good, but you've got to settle in for some neurotic behavior. About Schmidt was also really good, but sooo sad. It's got a black sense of humor and is about some pretty serious issues, so I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it. Napoleon Dynamite, well, one of the funniest movies I've seen in my entire life.

I think the reason so many people either love or hate a particular film is that we all come to the theater with different expectations.
For instance, I like to watch the craft of the film...who directed it, how was it made, is the writing good, are the camera angles interesting...stuff like that. That's why I pay money at the theater...I want to see something unique.
I think some people go to the theater only to watch the content of the film...is it a happy ending, are the actors familiar, I don't want to think--I just want to react....that sort of motivation.
Fwiw, I also loved Closer, Napoleon Dynamite, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Life is Beautiful. In fact, they are at the top of my favorites list!

DH and I got Royal Tanenbaums on DVD free from work. We watched it once and thought it was the stupidest movie ever (and we like stupid movies).
I actually forced myself to watch all of Glitter thinking it really couldn't be that bad...it is! Ugh, Mariah Carey is a horrible actress - stick to singing honey.
I saw You Got Served was on HBO and I tried to watch it. Let me put it this way; there's a reason K-Fed is in there. And the funny part - all of my sorority sisters love the movie.

Piping in to reiterate just how AWFUL of a movie Wedding Date was! It seemed as though the acting was ok, but the editing was a disaster. Totally spliced scenes from one to the next, things didn't flow properly, the sound was echo-y, and the whole thing seemed like it was slapped together by a five year old. Geesh.

I think some people go to the theater only to watch the content of the film...is it a happy ending, are the actors familiar, I don't want to think--I just want to react....that sort of motivationI totally agree with this. A lot of movies that would get a "no" from me on plot and character and whatnot are saved by truly amaing cinematography or direction or whatever.
I loved Corpse Bride. :) But I'm a huge Burton fan. And I expected the music and singing - it's just like Nightmare Before Christmas.
Ones I didn't like:
Closer - it was a well done movie and well executed, but I felt dirty after watching it. Seriously creeped out and like I needed to be disinfected. Bleah.
Van Helsing - So wanted to like this becuase I adore Hugh Jackman but I just couldn't. The costumes were great. That's it. The characters, the story, the CGI ... all sucked hard.
Saw - I know so many people who raved about this and I just don't get it. The acting was the worst I've seen - and by Cary Elwes, too! The story line was good and had a lot of promise and the concepts were great - the jaw trap scene was the best in the movie, IMO. But the police procedure was so bad as to completely ruin my suspension of disbelief and the scenes with Cary's daughter were so sugary bad that I felt I was going to develop diabetes. All in all, yuck.
There are a lot of others. In some ways I'm very picky about my movies and in some ways I like a lot of movies across all genres. So I'm resigned to most people not agreeing with my picks and pans.

I just thought of a really bad movie we watched with friends quite a while back:
First Daughter with Katie Holmes. It was so bad we kept watching to see how absurd and awful it could get. Yikes, it got worse and worse and worse!
Karen - try seeing Closer with your MOTHER! I couldn't sink farther down in my chair.

I love reading people's opinions about movies.
Hated: Sideways, Solaris, Royal Tenebaums, and a few others
But I could not get enough of First Daughter (mainly because of the lead guy in the movie) and Wedding Date. I mean not going to win any awards except at the Razzies, but Dermot was too hot in this flick.
I also didn't like the Aviator, or Ray very much. Ray because I just can't watch 3 hours about an unfaithful drug addicted genius. Reminds me of Leaving Las Vegas - man did I hate that movie.
Edited to add: I thought Finding Neverland was a beautiful film.
Txfish
10-10-2005, 03:24 PM
Oh, yay. I can admit to "getting something out of it" on a lot of these movies, but I didn't LIKE them. On the list:
Ray - wow. just too much of everything. including psychosis?
Royal Tenebaums
Sideways
etc. -- the "genre"
My exception to that is Adaptation, which I really kind of got into once I ditched my sense of needing to actually want to get interested in the characters. Of course, having Meryl Streep to make fun of helped.
I tend to love bad movies, just because they're so easy to compute. Like, SpaceCamp. :) When a movie wants to take itself so seriously, though, that they lose all sense of fun, I call shenanigans (and crap movie!) No one has a life that devoid of any life-like randomly occurring joy. And I LOVE bad horror movies, because they're the only ones I can handle. I'm a weenie.
Couldn't stand Adaptation. As others have said, it was ok until the last half hour. I also hated Lost in translation Every.single.minute. However, I've loved 2046 and I've seen a lot of people compare them.

Red Planet was one of the worst pieces of sh*t we've seen in a loooong time.
Thankfully it was just a rental, so not too much $$$ wasted there!
ETA: Karen~ Just noticed you posted that you weren't crazy about Van Helsing. I just put that on our Netflix queue only because Hugh Jackman is in it! I hope it's not TOO terrible....oh well. :)

I also didn't like the Aviator, or Ray very much. Ray because I just can't watch 3 hours about an unfaithful drug addicted genius. OMG how could I have forgotten to include Aviator on my list? I couldn't even finish watching it. Total torture. Ray was not bad but it was sooooo long. Good thing I was on a plane for 8 hours. I, too, could not stand Royal Tanenbaums.
I thought Saw was interesting... the concept was intriguing but the actual cinematography was not great. I wouldn't see it again, but I think it's ok for a rental.
I didn't really like Sin City that much bc it's not really my genre of film but I thought it was made well. I'd never seen a graphic novel film so this was new to me. Plus (I can't say this enough times) Clive Owens is sooo hot :p .

Just dont' expect greatness from the movie itself. :)

Karen-A lot or people I know liked that movie. I don't think I liked it because everything wasn't all spelled out for me. ;)
I liked Saw and a lot of people really hated that one!

I thought Memento was amazing! I really enjoyed The Aviator as well and will be the voice of dissent and admit that I liked The Village.
I was so disappointed with Saw. It was such a great idea and great things could have been done with it, but it didn't live up to the potential and Cary Elwes brought bad acting to a whole new level in that movie, which broke my heart given how I feel about the movie The Princess Bride.

I liked the Village. I actually watchd it again on DVD with some friends and caught a lot more of the subtleties. I really liked it.

Van Helsing. I'll consider it a life's mission if I can prevent just one poor soul from enduring that piece of...

Alexander The acting was horrible by all parties involved. Colin Farrel was absolutely ridiculous in that movie. Can he really act? I was unconvinced. We had to stop watching this mid-movie because we couldnt stop making fun of it.

I loved The Royal Tennenbaums! I didn't like it the first time, but gave it a second chance and now it's one of my favorites.
Skip: Any Vin Diesel movie! I agree with skipping AI and Red Planet..

I tried watching the Aviator last night...good lord. HORRID. I think we shut it off right before the ending, that is if there was an ending.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Aviator. I thought it did a really good job of covering the life of a truly interesting person.

I actually like many of the movies mentioned, from Memento, Lost in Translation, and Sideways all the way to the other end of the spectrum such as, A Knight's Tale and The Wedding Date. I love all sorts of movies. In fact, I think it is difficult to disappoint me.
A recent flick that did disappoint was Kingdom of Heaven .Such a long boring plot with no real depth. Although Orlando Bloom did do a decent job with what he was given.

TE VIRGIN SUICIDES!!!
That movie is the reason why I won't see anything Sophie Coppla writes or directs!!
Elizabeth Town was BAD.
Before Sunset and After Sunset! Why they made a squel I will NEVE know.
The Hitchhikers Guide to stupidity....I mean to the galaxy.
Crossroads with stupid Britney Spears.
13 going on 30 with Jennifer Garner.
Phantom of the Opera (I HATE THIS MOVIE!!!)
Anchorman
Half Baked
Man I can go on and on with this list.

Another vote against The Wedding Date. I like to watch cutesy chick flicks here and there, but this one was awful!! Don't waste your time with it.
I loved that movie. :)

I didn't think Closer was that bad. Granted, maybe that's bc Clive Owens is such a hottie he makes up for anything the movie itself might lack :p.
I LOVE CLIVE!!
I just like to watch his scenes. He has so much passion I can't stop watching him.

I loved the phantom of the opera. I got it for my birthday and think I've watched 8 times already (my birthday was last month)
oh and I love a Knights tale, probably cause I have this big thing for Rufus Sewell.
I agree about virgin suicides it was horrible, so was hitchhiker's guide.

I have to play because I have extreme anger toward the movie Birth. What a pile!!!
Also, High Tension was horrible. I'm not too squeamish, but there were a couple of scenes I could've done without. Actually, I take that back - I could do without the whole movie! Boo!!
I could go on and on.
