Umbilical cord falling off at 5 days?

My DD just turned one week old today. I always thought it was supposed to take a week or two for the umbilical cord to fall off but hers came off on Saturday...at 5 days old. Has anyone else had their baby's cord fall off this early? Also it still looks like there is a little bit of "something" in her belly button. Is this still part of the cord? Is that normal?

This same exact thing happened with DD. It fell off on day 4, I think. It was fine. THere was still a little dry scab in there. The great thing about it was that we were able to give her a normal bath earlier. I liked that!

DD fell off on day 7

Day 4 here. It is perfectly normal according to my ped:) DD also had a bit of a scab there, but we still gave her real baths (yay!!) and it was ok. But if you are worried just call your ped, Lord knows I do:)

Thanks everyone. I am relieved to hear it didn't fall off because we bumped it too much or something like that. I didn't think that would be the case, but as a new mom, I tend to question everything right now.

We are going to give DD her first real bath tonight!

Congratulations! Ours fell off at 8 days - the doctor was even trying to pull it off the previous day at her office so it can handle being jostled. Once it was off, we did experience some spotting for about a week as the scab final healed over.

DS' fell off at 7 days (I think). I just remember being kind of sad because that was part of his being a newborn.;)
