There was a funny promo running on one of the Boston radio stations earlier today. It went something along the lines of "Last year we just prayed for them to win - we didn't care if they ever one another World Series. This year we want to win - what can we say, we're greedy."

and if there is a rematch???
DH and I decided we would go together, not wear any Red Sox or Yankee garb to avoid any unwanted attention, and cheer our respective teams on like adults:D ! In any case, there may be no rematch if the Sox don't start winning. That was painful to watch last night and as soon as Grafannino screwed up DH yelled "Oh my God he Bucknered the Ball"! Didn't help that the announcer said the same shortly thereafter. We also found out the Yankees lost this morning and neither of us are happy:( !

I totally agree with this.
I think the Red Sox did an admirable job of even getting to the post season, considering that their number one starter was out for almost 4 months and that their closer was ineffective practially the whole year. Last year, everything clicked at the right time, offense and good pitching. They just didn't have the pitching to get it done this year.
In years past, I would be depressed beyond belief, but I think they did an admirable job given the circumstances and I hope they're firing on all cylinders next year!
I'd like to see the White Sox win now. Esp. since they haven't won since 1917!

I don't live in Boston center myself but I live in "Metrowest" - Somerville, which is within four miles of Boston center. So I feel legit in calling myself a Bostonian. I have lived here for six years now but was a Rhode Islander before that. I've been a Sox fan for a long time though and I even got my husband - a computer geek from Scotland who always professed to hate sports - hooked on the game. My cousin is a professional ump and works in triple A ball. I long for the days when he hits the big leagues and can get me free tickets!

I'm not from the Boston area, but where I grew up we didn't have any professional sports and my brothers liked the Red Sox. Since they were my idols as a child, I jumped on that bandwagon. I lived on the South Shore for 7 years and attended many games. Fenway is so much fun. I hope I'll get to go to another game at some point in my life. I just love the history behind the Sox and it was hard to live that close to Beantown and not get involved in Sox mania.

i'm not originally from boston but i moved to the boston area 6 years ago. i never paid attention to baseball until moving here -- it was a combination of the sox being such a presence here and a baseball-crazy friend of mine rubbing off on me that led me to start watching the games. DH on the other hand grew up rooting for the mets and hating the yankees. so being in boston, rooting for the sox was a natural choice! He did also play for Toronto, so there's that option too.
I think it'll be a Sox uniform. In fact, Kevin Youkilis was playing number 21 when he was in Pawtucket but was asked to wear 20 when he came up to Boston... apparently they're keeping 21 unavailable, just in case they have to retire it.

Well. I think we can safely say that IT got BROUGHT! Fabulous game.
Though I have to say, my favorite moment of the whole night was when Doug Mirabelli arrived at exactly seven o'clock and just jumped out of the town car in his Sox uniform, ready to go. That kicked ass.

05-02-2006, 06:28 AM
Great game! My two favorite parts were Mirabelli's arrival (he looked so damn happy to be back) and Damon's salute to the crowd. I totally laughed my butt off when they quoted him from May 1, 2005 saying he would NEVER go to the Yankees! How ironic!
jesseybell
05-02-2006, 07:13 AM
Awesome game! It was great to see the crowd's reaction when it was announced that Mirabelli would be catching, even though they had all seen Varitek warming up with Wakefield.
Damon was classy with the saluting the crowd - he just doesn't do anything for me with the shorter hair and in that uniform.
Seeing Mirabelli running out of the car already in his uniform was priceless.
Of course the outcome of the game was great too :)
I feel that Clemens with either go out with the Red Sox or the Astros, not the Yankees. My understanding is that the Yankees fans don't really think one way or the other about him, so I can't imagine he'd want to retire there. I think he'd stay with Houston just so he can stay with his family and also TRY to get a ring there - but I like what they say here about when he does start playing it will be summer and his family will come up here...but then they'll have to leave once school starts, but I am okay with that! So when is he actually going to start playing, somewhere???
mb1197
05-02-2006, 08:11 AM
I really would like to see Clemens come back to Boston. The fans love him and from everything he has said over the years he loved playing for the Sox. He simply sisn't like Dan Duquett as GM. With Theo in that position now I do think we have as good of a chance as any to get him back.

I'm from East Providence. It's funny - I'm half Italian myself and I've found that there is a particular "brand" of Italian spirit that is exhibited by second or third generation Rhode Islanders. The difference is extremely hard to explain, but we always called it Cranston Italian. I think it sort of combines the feel of Boston down-home Italians with the Long Island-y status-conscious Italians. I don't know... it's got really close traditional familes but they're very observant of which fork to use. That's a bizarre way to put it, I know, but do you know what I'm talking about?
Eh, maybe I'm crazy or just have a limited view... most of the Italians I know in Rhode Islander are (no word of a lie here) "connected." So there may be a particular type of family that is to be expected when they are... "connected."

One of my very good friends is from East Providence.
Speaking of Providenece, have you ever been to The Cav? That's one of DH and my favorite spots followed by the Hot Club.:)

I loved How Ortiz was at bat and Rem Dog was saying that the Yankees have admitted that they don't have a pitcher to match up with Ortiz, and were hoping that Myers was the answer. Rem Dog barely finished his sentence, and SLAM!! Home run! Take that, Yankees!!
I'm not impressed at Damons introduction and crowd salute. I dont think he did it out of class. I think he has an over-inflated ego, and i think it was more arrogant than classy.

I don't think I've ever posted in this thread, but I'm also a big Red Sox fan. I went to college at BU and lived right around Fenway all that time. We went to a lot of games in those years and I became a huge fan. There's a ton of former Bostonians/ Sox fans here in L.A. and we all watch games together and carpool to Anaheim when the Sox come to town. My husband is from Seattle and a Mariners fan, so it's always tense at our house when the teams play each other. But we share a mutual hatred for the Yankees, so it all works out okay. :)
Anyway, Sox won tonight. Yay! They're neck and neck with the Yankees.

DH & I went to a wildcard playoff game back in '04 during our honeymoon in Anaheim! We paid an arm & leg for "brokered" tickets (which seems like a big business in LA).... what a great experience. Boy, that parking lot leaves a lot to be desired though!
Whenever we travel, we try to get Redsox tickets. His biggest goal in life is to see the redsox play at every major league ball park! :D
YEAH for another Redsox win!!! :)

DH and I are new fans of the Red Sox, so I thought I'd join in! We hopped on the bandwagon in 2003, but actually routed against them in the alcs because the first game of the World Series was scheduled during our wedding reception:o The following year, we watched the late-season games and up through the world series. Then last year and so far this year, we've watched just about every game. We've definitely gotten sucked in!
I grew up in MA (not too far from Milford, mb1197) but was just never into sports growing up. In regards to the whole being from Boston thing- I would only say I'm from Boston if I was talking to someone from another country or a far away state. If I'm talking to people who are also from MA or New England, I say the specific town or west of Boston or the suburbs or something.
Anyway... DH grew up in RI (it seems like there are a lot of similar combos here!) and views becoming a Red Sox fan as a way to embrace Massachusetts culture:p
My sister's roommate works at Fenway as a Red Sox Embassador and we can get tickets to any game pretty much. My sister and dad had monster seats for one of the World Series games in '04 actually.

... the first game of the World Series was scheduled during our wedding reception...
Too funny!! THe third game of the ALDS was during my wedding - there are pictures of me at my reception,in front of a wide screen TV, thrilled by the score! And I was at our venue the night before our wedding, setting up the space along with my bridesmaids and friends, completely frenzied, when my relaxed husband called from a bar to tell me that Trot Nixon (my favorite!) had hit a home run in the 11th inning, and we were still in the running. Woohoo!

At the risk of sounding like a suck-up, erm, will you be my best friend?
I am psyched for tomorrow when we meet up with the Yanks again. Crossing fingers - go Sox go!

You ladies are making me soooo jealous!!!! I really miss being up there so I can go to the games. There's nothing like a good Sox game. One of my co-workers was up there recently (He's from Boston) and he and his daughter got to take pictures on the mound (his friend is a cop).
The only thing that rivals that is the wedding DH and I went to the year they won the World Series - October 3, 2004 our friends were married on the dugout and the reception was in the 406 Club. Now THAT was a party!!!! Of course the Pats were playing Buffalo that day and everyone was checking the score during the ceremony. The bride and groom graciously waited until the game was over (Pats won) so that the guests could watch the game on TV in the 406 before making their grand entrance. I'll never ever forget it!

We looked into that! It cost an arm and a leg... WAY out of our price range. Also, there was a game scheduled for the day we wanted to get married. :) Us standing on top of the dugout while players spit sunflower seeds and tobacco beneath us... not terribly romantic.

I have to say, despite the fact of the win, it was a bad game last night. So many batters left, errors, stolen bases... it just seemed like a spiritless game on both sides.
I feel HORRIBLE about Matsui. He has always been such a scrapper, just working hard, doing what the team needs of him. Quiet and good. That accident looked awful; the way his wrist was just hanging and flailing made me cringe. And the look on his face, like he was just steeling himself against the pain... wow. I feel so badly for him.

That would have been nice for them, being with their families. But I suppose it isn't too tough being "stuck" in a posh hotel with room service. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Boston ace Curt Schilling became the 14th pitcher in major league history to reach 3,000 strikeouts Wednesday when he fanned Oakland's Nick Swisher in the first inning.
The 39-year-old Schilling allowed a leadoff double to Jason Kendall before getting Swisher swinging for the milestone strikeout. His accomplishment was announced and Schilling received a lengthy ovation. He stepped off the mound and tipped his hat.
Schilling is the first pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts since Greg Maddux fanned San Francisco's Omar Vizquel for No. 3,000 on July 26, 2005.
Swisher has struck out six times against Schilling, who has fanned 858 different batters in his 19-year big league career. Only once previously has a 3,000th strikeout been recorded in August, by Bert Blyleven on Aug. 1, 1986. Schilling has 552 lifetime strikeouts in the month of August.
Schilling's Boston teammate, Mike Lowell, was Randy Johnson's 3,000th strikeout victim on Sept. 10, 2000.

from www.yahoo.com
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox emerged Tuesday night as winners of the bidding for Daisuke Matsuzaka with a $51.1 million offer and have 30 days to sign the Japanese pitcher to a contract.
The Seibu Lions of Japan's Pacific League announced they had accepted the high bid for their prized pitcher, and the major league commissioner's office simultaneously confirmed at the general managers' meetings that the Red Sox had made the offer.
"We have long admired Mr. Matsuzaka's abilities and believe he would be a great fit with the Red Sox organization," Boston general manager Theo Epstein said. "Clearly, we believe Mr. Matsuzaka is a real talent."
If the Red Sox and Matsuzaka can agree to a deal by midnight on Dec. 14, he would join a talented rotation that already includes Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett and converted closer Jonathan Papelbon.
"We're excited to have won this part of the process and we're hopeful we can reach an agreement," Epstein said.
Matsuzaka is represented by Scott Boras, who last year negotiated the deal that moved center fielder Johnny Damon from the Red Sox to the Yankees.
Epstein said the team would invite Boras, Matsuzaka and his family to Boston to begin negotiations. Boras said the sides planned to set up a meeting soon, but wasn't sure whether it would be in Boston, Japan or California.
In assessing the amount of Boston's bid, Boras compared Matsuzaka's marketability for the Red Sox to what outfielder Hideki Matsui has brought to the Yankees.
"It's the value of a No. 1 starter. It's much like Matsui and the Yankees," Boras said. "It shows the value of a player like this. He brings advertising dollars. He brings a network presence in Japan."
The previous high bid for a posted player from Japan was $13,125,000 by the Seattle Mariners for Ichiro Suzuki after the 2000 season. For selling their star pitcher, the Lions get the $51.1 million from Boston -- only if the Red Sox sign Matsuzaka.
Unlike Matsui, Matsuzaka was not yet eligible for free agency.
"I'm very happy. I want Daisuke to realize his dreams of playing in the major leagues," said Hidekazu Ota, acting owner of the Lions. "I talked to him today, and he is very happy."
Even before the announcement, general managers had assumed Boston would be the highest bidder in the blind process.
"We'll congratulate the winner and move on," New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday afternoon.
The New York Mets also made an unsuccessful offer, while the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers were thought to be among the bidders as well.
"I'm very comfortable with the bid that we made," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said, sidestepping whether he would have topped Boston's offer now that he knew what it was.
Agents roamed the lobby at the hotel where GMs are meeting, discussing their free-agent clients. Some agents think the market will move more quickly this offseason because of the decision by management and the players' association to eliminate the Dec. 7 deadline for free agents to re-sign with their former teams unless they were offered salary arbitration.
"Pitching, as usual, is at a premium," Boras said.
Second baseman Mark DeRosa became the first major league free agent to switch teams, leaving Texas for a $13 million, three-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets re-signed two players, agreeing to a $12 million, two-year contract with 41-year-old pitcher Orlando Hernandez and a $3.8 million, one-year deal with second baseman Jose Valentin.
Minaya said some teams are unsure of where the marketplace is going, "so if they could do something quick, they're going to try to do it."
Mike Mussina's agent, Arn Tellem, kept up talks with the Yankees on a new contract for the pitcher that likely will be worth $23 million to $25 million over two years.
"We're in the red zone," Tellem said.
With Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt heading a weak free-agent class, pitchers will get top prices.
"There are 30 clubs and probably three-quarters are looking for pitching," new Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "There's a lot of interesting pitchers out there. At the end of the year, the teams that have pitching, and healthy pitching, are usually the ones that are around."
GMs, as usual, will hold their annual discussion Wednesday of whether to have instant replay available to umpires, a concept commissioner Bud Selig opposes. In the past, the idea hasn't garnered enough support.
"I guess we'll get a sense of that tomorrow," said Joe Garagiola Jr., a senior vice president in the commissioner's office.
There will also be talk Wednesday of whether to eliminate tie games, having them instead become suspended games. On Thursday, the GMs will discuss whether to have uniform standards for storing baseballs, a talk prompted by the use of a humidor by the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
As for the postseason schedule, nothing seems to have come of the idea floated by Selig to give wild-card teams fewer home games in the playoffs.
"That is not officially on the agenda, so I suspect that will be some good lobby talk," Garagiola said.
GMs did vote on one rule change, proposing that outright assignments to the minor leagues not count against the number of optional assignments a team has on a player. That must be approved by owners and the union.

Hello CC Red Sox Nation!
I was born and lived the first 9 years of my life in Massachusetts, so many members of my family and friends are huge Red Sox fans. Even my Florida-born husband has joined the ranks. I'm not a huge sports person, but I love my hometown and get excited when one of their teams does well. I love how the sports teams really bring the city together; even for those of us who don't live there anymore. My husband and I took the Fenway tour when we were in Boston for a wedding last August and both of us just loved it.
There are many Red Sox fans on my Christmas gift list. Any suggestions for creative Red Sox gift-giving? Last year I gave my dad, my friend Richard, and my brother copies of the City of Champions DVD (http://www.cityofchampionsdvd.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/rabid_films/index.jsp?partnerId=ENTWEEI2), which I highly recommend. It has clips and highlights of Boston sports history set to rock music, and interspersed with interviews of athletes, coaches, sports media people, etc. My dad, a Boston sports fanatic his whole life, has watched it several times. Many of the major events were ones that he had witnessed in person, so it brought back a ton of fond memories for him.

are there any kids on your list? or an adult who has kids? DH is a die-hard sox fan so i bought this book for him for his first father's day

it was really for our daughter and she absolutely loves it!! it's her bedtime book now and DH gets a kick out of reading it to her as well (she loves pointing to all of the baseballs). it doesnt have the most child-friendly illustrations (the green monster picture is very creepy, and for some reason DD says 'NO!' and flips past L-Lynn, M-Martinez, and N-Nomar b/c for some reason they scare her). but other than that it's cute, there is a rhyme for each letter/player and then a blurb about them underneath. it looks like they already updated it - the one i have has no mention of winning the world series.
i am at a loss for other ideas, my family always asks what to get DH and he has so much red sox stuff i am running out of ideas!

It's that time of year again!!
I came home from work last night ( I don't get home until after midnight) to find that my husband bought, washed, and put Red Sox Baseball sheets on the bed. He said it was in time for opening day:rolleyes: I like baseball more than I thought I ever would...but do I really have to sleep on Red Sox sheets? Being a Red Sox fan and not living in New England is rough, because the games aren't on TV here that often and they're always on when I'm still at work. Thank goodness for the website. The past few years I've just used Gameday, but this year I might bite the bullet and pay for MLB.tv to get the video.

A Red Sox/Yankees joke posted all in good fun:
A family of New York fans headed out one Saturday to shop for the youngest boy's birthday. While in the sports shop the son picks up a Red Sox jersey and says to his older sister, "I've decided to become a Red Sox fan and I would like this Boston jersey for my birthday."
His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him upside his head and says, "Go talk to mother." Off goes the little lad with the jersey in hand and finds his mother.
"Mom?"
"Yes, son?"
"I've decided I'm going to be a Red Sox fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."
The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and says, "Go talk to your father!" Off he goes with the Red Sox jersey in hand and finds his father.
"Dad?"
"Yes, son?"
"I've decided I'm going to be a Red Sox fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."
The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son in the back of hishead and says, "No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT!"
About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading towards home. The father turns to his son and says "Son, I hope you've learned something today."
The son says,
"Yes, Dad, I have."
"Good son, what is it?"
The son replies
"I've only been a Red Sox fan for an hour and I already hate you Yankee bastards!"

DH & I are going to see them play Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field at the end of July. I can't wait! My grandparents, parents, siblings and my sister's boyfriend are going too. We're going to stay the night and make a whole weekend out of it, since Tampa is a couple hours from Orlando. Which reminds me...I need to find a pink Papelbon jersey to wear to the game!

Little Timmy was in his 4th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up-fireman, policeman, salesman, etc...
Timmy was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father.
"My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money."
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took Little Timmy aside to ask him,
"Is that really true about your father?"
"No," said Timmy, "He plays for the New York Yankees, but I was too embarrassed to say so."

I know! It's such a shame they lost Sunday's game after two great victories. Oh well, at least they won the series. And at least we got to see winning games. :)
About the Belleview...It was a little creepy at times, but it is certainly oozing with old timey charm. I love history, so staying in a 110 year old hotel was quite the novelty for me. I loved that they had a window into their bakery where you can see wedding cakes being made! And the ballrooms are sooooooo pretty. The ghost tour took place while we were at the game, so we didn't get a chance to learn about what parts were haunted. It wouldn't be surprising if the whole thing was haunted. We definitely made a few comparisons to The Shining during our stay! Honestly, the place could stand some TLC in parts, but it's really not that bad. I hope they don't tear it down! That would be such a shame!
