What is this called in Photoshop?

I'm brand new at PS, but just couldn't find what this particular thing is called.

What is it when you take a part of one picture and cut/paste it into the next picture - ala pasting a crib into an empty room, etc.

Well when you take an object from one picture and put it in another you are creating a new layer.

For example: You've got a picture of a nursery, and another picture of a crib. The nursury would be called "the background layer" and the crib would be "layer one" once you put it on background. Does that make any sense?

Most people would use the "Magnetic Lasso Tool" in order to select the crib (at least that's what I would use).
