The cakes with the ribbons on them are super pretty and classy, but I have a stupid question about them: when does the ribbon get taken off? Thanks :o

Usually the caterers take them off as they cut the cake (after you and your DH cut your slices, if you're going to do that).

You're probably wondering how you cut the cake, without pulling the ribbon down with the knife, or cutting the ribbon, and still making it look pretty for pictures? I would just cut a little triangle kind of under the ribbon to get a peice out...then you won't wreck the ribbon for those cutting pictures. :)

If you have the cake done in fondant icing, the ribbons are made out of the frosting so it's all edible.

Okay! All of those answers make sense! Thanks, ladies :) In looking at cake pictures for inspiration recently, I began to wonder whether people somehow cut *through* them or whether they got taken off (and when that'd happen). I'm so pleased to find out that I focus on the important things in life! ;)

If you decide to do a real ribbon, be sure that its a 'greased' ribbon, otherwise if they aren't treated, the ribbon will pull some of the fat from the icing and do some really unattractive discoloration/blotching.

When my friend got married, the caterer left a 'split' in the ribbon where she and her DH cut the cake, so the ribbon would separate and not get pulled in the front. (hope this makes sense) Then the catering staff removed the ribbons as they cut up the cake for the guests.

My wedding cake didn't have ribbon, but our hometown reception cake did (much to my dismay). They had us cut from the back of the cake where they left a little section without ribbon.
