I just thought I would start this.
I know the WI boards had pretty much died over on WC, so hopefully we can revive that here.
Anyone?

I'm in Illinois, but I am in Wisconsin enough!
I am going to the Dells mid-July. I can't wait. I have gone there every summer for practically my whole life!

I just moved from WI to NC, does that count? I went to UW-Whitewater, but have lived in both Madison and West Allis. I'll be getting married in Lake Mills if anyone knows where that is.
Nice to "meet" you ladies!! :)

That's funny, I am in WI but am so close to the border that I feel like I'm in IL half the time :D
Welcome!
MandyMaloo~My DH is going to UWW for grad school. Small world! You can join in anytime you want--even if you did leave us for warmer weather ;) I'd join you down there if I could!

LOL- And Wagsgirl--you're prolly the only other one that knows where LM is! My finace grew up there and we're telling people that's where the wedding is and they can't find it on a map :). It's pretty funny!!

Welcome deliciousjones! I am pretty sure there are a few other Milwaukee gals lurking around ;)
Hey there Miss Wags ;) Good to see you made the transition from WC and LJ safe and sound. Now we just need to get everyone else over here!
lawyergirl25 you are more than welcome to hang out here. The more the merrier!
jessied1025~Welcome! There are a bunch of ladies here from Madison and there are pretty regular gtgs there as well. They promise not to bite :D
MandyMaloo~ You had to ask! It has such a long title I never get it right, it's Curriculum & Instruction with emphasis in Professional Development. And I admit to checking the website to make sure I got it right ;)
Hi ButterflyJen! Fox Valley sounds so familiar. You'd think after 8 years in WI I'd know a few places other than Milwaukee and Madison.

Hello!
I'm a California girl, but we moved to Platteville last fall when DH started teaching at UWP. I also lived in Madison two years ago when I was a student briefly at UW-Madison.
lawyergirl25: We're going to Summerfest this Sunday to watch Moby! I scored a night at the Hilton City Center for only $58 on Priceline. Can't wait!
Hope to get to know everyone better soon!

Judy that sounds awesome - I love Moby. :) And I almost went to Platteville - paid my deposit and everything - but then I decided to move to Ohio on a whim. (I know, how does one move 6 hours away on a whim, but I did.) So now I'm here. How do you like SW Wisconsin?

luvnu43~ Hi there! I think I'm the only local gal that hasn't met you yet! Someday I will make it to another gtg.

Hey, it's 'da fellow Wisconsin ladies, dontchaknow.:p Hey there guys! Nice to see ya! Born and raised in WI, I'm still here. Couldn't get away from the cow tipping and inflation tag (I'm a farm gal-can you tell?). For those who don't know, I live just about an hour away from both Milwaukee and Madison around the Watertown area.
I wish we were going to Summerfest this year but my brother and SIL are coming in from MN so it's a no-go. Besides, the hubby doesn't like crowds at all.
Look forward to chatting with you all.

DH and I just moved to West Bend - that's northwest of Milwaukee. Before we moved here we lived south of Milwaukee but still in the suburbs.
I am super excited for summerfest this year! My company is taking us (and spouses) on Thursday and then DH and I are going on Saturday to see Collective Soul (his fave band).
What about this rain we've been having?!?

Not in Wisconsin currently, but I was born and raised in Lake Geneva, and moved out of state after a year of college (went to UWSP). I miss Wisconsin terribly and hope to move back (or at least closer) someday. Nebraska has Culver's now, so at least I get a small taste of a local favorite. :)

I'll actually be up in Wisconsin next week Tuesday-Sunday to visit family. I haven't been up there since Christmas (when I had the flu the entire time), and usually I don't come up in the summer, so it will be nice. :) Plus I'm flying in, which is even better! The 8 hour drive really wears on ya.

ButterflyJen - Yes I did! I was only there for a year in 94-95, and I was in Thomson dorm half the year and Roach the other half. My major was radio broadcasting. A lot of my friends that went there graduated in 97 or 98, so we might have some people in common. :)

Hi to all of the familiar and new faces. Glad to see so many of us have migrated over. I hope a WI thread instead of a whole forum proves to be better, easier to chat rather than feelig the need to start a different thread for each topic.
ButterflyJen - DH and all of his siblings all graduated from UWSP. He did in 95 (wildlife mgmt/bio) BIL and SIL in 99 (Paper Science and English) and other BIL in 02 (English). They all loved it too!
Lawyergirl25 - It's funny, I was just lurking in the OH thread b/c I went to college there, looks like we switched locations :)
We missed Summerfest this year - between trying to find a babysitter for almost 4 month old twins (HA!), being out of work for 3+ months and starting a new job, it just wasn't in the cards. We aren't even making our yearly pilgrimige to Alpine to see DMB :pout: I am hoping to hit both next year for sure, though.

wagsgirl Looks like you found me over on LJ.;) I'll respond over there in a bit. I'm trying to catch up here at work from my extended weekend. Dang the work piles up when I'm gone. Yet when I'm actually at work, it just sort of filters in little by little.
I'll be pulling out my calender shortly to see when we could get a get together planned. I know it's the summer time and y'all are probably busy but maybe we could get a date set for sometime in the future.

Lizard -my DH majored in broadcasting - but the TV side of it. :) He graduated in 2000. I lived in Baldwin the whole time I was there. I partied in Thomson dorm a few times (but in 95-96, bummer) and in Roach MANY MANY times after 96. Ah, the college days, they were fun. ;)
sunmoonstars - cool! Dh was a wildlife major till he switched to broadcasting his sophomore year.

A Happy Belated Birthday to Nikki! : :D :D
As for the heat, we've been staying inside as much as possible and lounging in O's wading pool the rest of the time. We are supposed to get record highs in the 100s this weekend. I am soooo not looking forward to it.
Heat/humidity = YUCK!
We were in Chicago this past weekend and it was even worse there. We keep our shades closed during the day and that seems to help keep our apt cooler. We don't have central air so our little wall/window AC only really cools off the living room/kitchen area. But, if we get some fans going too we can circulate air pretty well, just not into the bedroom which sucks.
I can't wait for fall! :D

Hey there. Thanks for the belated b-day wishes.:)
Huge Fire in Watertown!!
There's a tire recycling place here in Watertown on Provimi road that went up in flames this morning. The huge cloud of black smoke is slowly working its way across Watertown. The firefighters and our Street Personnel are doing everything they can to put out the flames and protect the houses of the residents around the tire recycling place. I guess they've had way too many tires there for too long (neighbors complained about it but the County and State okayed it) and with the heat and dry weather, the tires just kept insulating all that heat until that heat turned into flames. Just horrible.

Good Monday morning!
Jen It does sound like the tire fire was finally put out thanks to that foam they had brought in. In the same fire category, lightening struck the Episcopal church here in Watertown on Saturday during the nasty storm and it burned the steeple and did some major water damage to the church itself. It's enough with the fires around here now.:p

There was also a multi-family home fire in Kewaskum this morning. Thankfully the building was still under construction so no one was living there!
The news said it didn't look like arson. I was also so paranoid about that when we were building our home - people like to set fire to new constructions...

Need to get this thread active again....
QOTD: What is your favorite part about living in Wisconsin?
My favorite part about living in Wisconsin is the convenience and the quiet.
I lived in Illinois until I was 18. Everything was at my fingertips but it was just so...congested. Wisconsin is close enough to all of the culture that Chicago has to offer (with some up in Milwaukee too) with half the congestion. Our rush hour in Milwaukee takes about 30 minutes at the most, whereas my sister has gotten stuck in Chicago traffice for two hours.
Lizard
08-02-2005, 11:39 AM
I'm not in Wisconsin anymore, but I miss the lakes the most. We just don't have beautiful, big, tree-lined lakes like that here in Nebraska. I miss the smell of the lakes too... the Missouri River doesn't quite have that smell, LOL. :) I also miss being right between Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago and being able to drive to either one on a whim. I'm in a big city now, but it's just not the same for some reason.

08-02-2005, 08:30 PM
I love the change of seasons. Granted, I could do without 3 feet of snow on the ground at any given time, but that's what I get for living here, right?
We went on our honeymoon to Florida in Mid-December. Walt Disney World was playing Christmas music and we were wearing shorts because it was in the 80's. I can't imagine not having "seasons"...
Happy1
08-03-2005, 07:29 AM
I've lived here my whole life. I love the farmers and the general feeling you get from farm families. Growing up I never truly appreciated it and always swore I'd get out and move to a big city. I moved to a very small city (Fond du Lac) when I graduated high school. I wasn't there 3 months when I yearned for being back in the country surrounded by farms and the farming community. Though doors still get locked, I love being able to know if there's trouble, I can run to any of our "neighbors" and even though they don't know me at all, they'd pitch right in and help if they can.
I also love the beautiful scenery we have throughout the state. My favorite would be the bluffs and stone formations in the LaCrosse area and the beautiful rivers and lakes surrounded by forests. I can totally see why people settled in this area.
Nikki :D

QOTD: Are you going to State Fair?
I don't think DH and I are going to State Fair this year. As much as I love fair food (mmmm...corn and cream puffs) it is always way too crowded and too expensive. I used to live in West Allis and we would take the bus to the fair. Now - forget it! It's like $10 to park or something like that.

::waving hello from Cali::
I used to live in Milwaukee and my parents still do. They live in River Hills. Milwaukee was never my favorite place to live but I do like somethings, like the winters, even if they are cold and driving down Lake Shore Drive and being at my moms shop in Whitefish Bay. I like the cuteness of Milwaukee.

QOTD: Is it soda or pop? Bubbler or drinking fountain?
I know some regions of the state use different terms.... So - what do you call them?
Being from Illinois, I still call it a drinking fountain. Bubbler doesn't work for me. ;)
When I'm in Illinois I will call it pop (or my family gives me a hard time about it). Otherwise I will call it soda. It's easier than getting strange looks from people in restaurants and stores.
POP! :D But actually, I've lived in both types of places. Growing up in Washington (state) ...and maybe because we were so near Canada, we called it pop. I went to college in CA so it was soda. Then moved to Boston....soda. And now I'm back to my old standard..POP..here in Wisconsin. Yay!
I call it a drinking fountain. The only place I've heard "bubbler" is when I was in England.

We are not planning on going to the state fair either. I can't remember the last time we went, but a good old cream puff sounds wonderful! :)
QOTD: Soda vs. Pop & Drinking fountain vs. bubbler
I have always used the words soda and bubbler. However when I ment my husband they call it pop and use bubbler.
Here is another one...Sloppy Joes...
In my family we call Sloppy Joes "hot tamales". My DH family calls them BBQ's. The first time they said it I thought we were grilling some type of meat with BBQ sauce! To this day they still make fun of me for calling sloppy joes hot tamales...they are lucky I love them so much! :D

I'm also going to take in my first game at Miller Park (I know - it's horrible that it's taken me this long to get there) and probably go to the Zoo or Public Museum with my parents. I can't wait!
PS...it's SODA and BUBBLER. I still use the term soda, but I've broken the "bubbler" habit after 7 long years here in Buckeyeland.

Holy Cow! I must be missing out..... :( oh, well. Much like Happy1, my husband doesn't like crowds, and I can't seem to match my schedule with anyone that wants to go.
PS: I say "soda" as opposed to "pop," but I do say "bubbler." Has anyone else notice people in WI say "or no?" a lot? I think I brought this up on the WC once....(I can't remember...) Anyway, it seems it's kind of a regional thing. "Do you want to drink from the bubbler, or no?" "Would you like dinner, or no?" It's sort of annoying to hear, but I know I'm guilty of using that expression quite a bit.

I haven't heard "or no" much but "hey?" ALL THE FREAKING TIME. My MIL is famous for doing that. "You're going to a party, hey?" or "That's a big pumpkin, hey?" DH does it sometimes and it drives me nuts.
A friend from HS married a guy from Wisconsin. I asked her if he called it a bubbler and she nearly peed her pants laughing so hard. She never heard that word (I guess how often does it come up in a normal conversation) and called her DH immediately to ask him where he gets a drink of water from. He said bubbler and she nearly peed her pants again. :D
QOTD: Have you ever worn a cheese wedge on your head?

I am a Packer fan, not like some die-hards, but I've never worn a cheese head.
But I was at Summerfest and went to a Kenny Chesney concert. A fan had made a "She thinks my Tractor's Sexy" themed cheese head and he wore it during that song!

Many drivers will weave quite a bit within their lane. It freaks me out because I don't know what they're doing and if they swerve into me that wouldn't be good.
People drive 55 in the fast/passing lane. Drives me nuts
People like to slam on their brakes for no reason - or when it's not really necessary

We polka'd to Frankie Yankovic's "Too Fat Polka" at our wedding! Funny story... my in-laws are REALLY good at polka, and my husband wanted to polka with his mom. So we planned this surprise polka at our wedding. My husband took the mic and said "So you all know that Jan and Larry are really great polka-ers", but it came out as "pokers" :D :D He got a giant laugh and was so embarassed, LOL. I polka'd with his dad, DH with his mom, and then we switched and we got off the floor so the in-laws could go to town.

Glad to know we aren't the only ones out there that polka. We usually fall into the crowd of senior citizens when it comes to polka-ing.:p Now I have the song "Who the Hell is Alice" in my head. That's my DH's favorite song to polka to. We actually know a polka dance routine to it (not just the regular polka around the room). Madison Parks and Rec has several structures where you can bring your own food/beverage--park shelters, but fancier than that. I love this one:

Warner Park is also great-affordable and you get to bring in your won stuff, too. There are two options there:

Another option is the Memorial Union which rents out rooms, ballrooms, etc. . . for weddings--some rooms even have a deck overlooking Lake Mendota.

As for restaurants, depending on how many of us there are there's a Mel's Diner right there. It's a 50's themed place. Otherwise there's Berres Brothers by the Walmart in Watertown (about 10/15 minutes away) and an Upper Krust in Watertown too. Of course at the mall there are also some fast food joints.
I can take a day off during the week if that works better for everyone else. Otherwise Sundays in general work good. Friday evenings and Saturdays are usually really bad for me. Way too booked up! Can't do September 9th unless we do that during the day. I'm going to see a concert in Fond du Lac with my Grandma and parents (Tim is coming along too of course).

Yeah--I used to go to Mel's for my birthday every year--it was a pretty good time.
I was wondering if anyone on here could gimme some legal advise. Not too sure where else I can post it.
My FH'S old fraternity was shut down for 2 years at Whitewater last night. I am concerned because they have kicked out all the guys from the house (even though the school OR the actual frat does NOT own it. The house is own by a private person.) These guys were told that all thier stuff was to be out by tomorrow and they must find a new place to live by then. A bit unrealistic. Last night, 20 guys literally slept in the front yard. Apartments and houses to rent are already scarce in WW, but especially since school starts soon!! Can these guys persue some kind of legal action since they have been given only 48 hours to find a new place to live? They are not being refunded for rent, and have already signed leases/paid. This is outright wrong....and I fail to see how the school can have power over a private residence. Any ideas?

I know I posted about the gtg and never came back...I'm bad! :o
September is already filling up for me, especially since I was hoping to have a child-free trip there.
If we wait until October-ish, that would give us all time to save up money and figure out free weekends. It might also allow some others to join us. I promise none of us bite and we are only a wee bit stalkerish. ;)

Depending on the agreement the private owner has with the school; there may be little they can do.
At Carroll College the frats are owned by private people, but they have a strict clause with the college that only certain guys can live there and the school can revoke living privledges at anytime. Sororities are not allowed to have houses because the college deemed them to be whore houses (don't EVEN get me started on the craziness of that!)
Carroll ousted three frats from their houses. The only reason why they didn't oust the fourth is that one of their members is the Chairman of the Board and has donated millions. He's a die hard frat guy (even though he's 90) and would have pulled his support.

OMG- I just read the newspaper article and I am FUMING! FH was sent the letter from internationals (as were the rest of the members--including alum) and they EXPLICTLY said they did NOT support the decision on the dean. They said that they had only agreed to a 2 year suspension, which involved no campus activities. This stupid dean thought that wasn't good enough and kicked them all out.
I hate how everyone is making them look. They make it look like these are a bunch of drunk frat boys that do nothing but get drunk and cause mayhem. I LOVE how she compared these guys to Delta Chi. The Delta Chi house was shut down becuase they were selling drugs out their house!!!! The FBI and the Madison SWAT team raided their house. Hardly compareable to a party in my eyes.
I am sickened by thie whole thing. If housing has been provided for any of these guys, they sure as hell don't know about it. My best friend's BF is living out of her garage, and another one of the guys is LITERALLY homeless. His father died and the bank has taken their home, and Lambda was the only place he had left.
I sent this link to the guys, and they are writing letters both to the paper and to Mary Bath Mackin for not getting the information correct. It's nothing like Delta Chi or Tau Kappa Epsilon. This was a normal situation as a normal drinking party--and anyone that said they've never heard of underage college drinking is just lying.
GRRRRR!!! Anyway--I just wanted to set the record straight. The housing corp in Madison is getting involved and legal action is being taken on behalf of these guys. Just very fusterating....
Hey ladies! :D DH and I need ideas for fun day trips in Wisconsin for this weekend. (Neither of us are from here and we're determined to explore the state before our tenure as grad students is up.) We had a couple out of town trips planned that aren't going to work out but we still want to explore and not sit at home all weekend. We live in Madison and love outdoor stuff - hiking, etc. and also just exploring new towns. It would be fun to pack a picnic lunch one day and go somewhere cool. We've been to New Glarus already as well as Devil's Lake.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks.

Door County goes without saying...It's the "thumb" part of the state. Don't know if you know that or have been there, but it's great! Lots of hiking, lighthouses, general outdoorsy stuff. It's quite a hike up there, but totally worth it. I've done it in a day before...

The Kettle Moraine area (around Fond du Lac area) I've heard is just amazing for hiking. We're about 45 miles away from it in West Bend and DH keeps telling me we have to go and hike it in fall.
Tonya We've never been but thought it would be fun to go camping there. Turns out we should have made reservations weeks/months in advance. Oops. But we'll think about it for a day trip.
Chimichanga Thanks for the suggestion! :)
Thanks, Jenah! :D I got your email too. Good info, thank you! I'll talk to DH although I don't imagine he's going to want to shell out $$ for a hotel but it's worth a try. I wish we could camp. :(

Sororities are not allowed to have houses because the college deemed them to be whore houses (don't EVEN get me started on the craziness of that!)
I know this is a little late and the subject is dried up, but here goes anyway:
There is a city ordinance in Milwaukee saying only three unrelated people can live in the same house. It also goes back to the whole whore house thing - the ordinance is really old. However, the alderman on the east side (where UWM is) is an ass and won't allow the city to amend the ordinance. Therefore, houses with four or five bedrooms can legally only have three people living in them. Just stupid. I know plenty of people who lost their houses in the middle of the year because a jerky neighbor called the housing authority and got them kicked out.

Yup - same thing in Waukesha. There were two girls I knew with the same last name but not related. They managed to live with two other girls (four unrelated girls) in one house. Scandelous, but hey it worked for two years. :)

That is so fusterating!
Just an update on the guys: They've all managed to find places to stay (some are commuting in 1 1/2 to school everyday). The dean that did this is actually coming under HUGE fire from faculty and students. They all feel kicking them out of their home was uncalled for, and as I hear has recieved many letters from alums that are paying big bucks to the school. Apparently some pulled some funding, and the staff is furious....of course the news crews arn't around for this, but oh well.
Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know. Thanks for all the helpful advice...especially those links. The guys are seeking legal retribution, not sure what's going to happen next. Just keeping my fingers crossed that this is all done soon!
I hope WI is having as beautiful weather as we are out here in NC. We're hoping to still make it out there in October ( :p trick or treating with the niece!) but we're not sure. Hope everyone is having a wondermous day--and thanks for letting me vent before

(http://www.marcustheatres.com/theater.cfm?theater_id=2110), Potawatomi Bingo Casino just down the road towards Milwaukee (http://www.paysbig.com/), or even the Milwaukee County Zoo which is less than ten mins away (http://www.milwaukeezoo.org/). :) Plus there are a TON of cool places to eat.
Hope this helps! :D

Tonya--I'm checking on the $$ situation. O needing warmer clothes means jack squat if I can't pay for them. I hate to leave you hanging until last minute though.

The way things look it almost does look like November may be better. This is just nuts, isn't it? My best friend and I used to get together once a week when we both lived in Fond du Lac. Then I moved and it became once a month. Now that she's got a boyfriend and we both have lives, we have gone almost a year without seeing each other and only talk about once every 2 months if we're lucky. Life happens.;)
I'm still willing and ready to get together whenever we can pin down a date.

Man, it's been awhile since I've gotton to come over here and post! How are things in Wisconsin? Any snow yet? We went back to visit in October and it was beautiful!! I couldn't believe how nice it was!
Well, I'm looking for some help. We have decided for sure that our wedding WILL take place in Wisconsin (we were thinking about having it here, but it wouldn't be the same), but we're clueless about some nice places for our reception. I went to HS in Madison, so I know the area, but I never really ventured too far from the East Side. Have you ladies been to any really nice weddings in Madison (or the surrounding areas)? Hey there all! Welcome to all the newbies. Glad you found the thread.:)
Mandy I'm from the Watertown area and we've had an inch here and there but it's all melted away. We're getting flurries today and are supposed to get up to 2" tonight though so hopefully that will stick around. I'm itchin' to go sledding. As for a place for your reception, we had ours at The Chandelier Ballroom in Hartford. It's huge and there's a nice hotel just 10 minutes or less away. It's actually a historical landmark as well. It's a bit on the pricey side (3 years ago we paid $1,500 for the large room but they included the tables, setting up, taking down, the bartenders and someone there just to make sure everything was going well and we could easily contact if we wanted/needed something). They do have a smaller room with a fireplace that's also very nice but I can't remember how much that was. I think the site says it may be $300. We were extremely happy with it though and we needed the space for everyone we had. They do have a website if you're interested. It's http://www.chandelierballroom.com/rental.html

Mandy I'm glad I could help.:) I would be happy to share some pics with you. Before I forget, be sure to take advantage of the stage. We had a really neat group picture done with our guests. The photographer stands up on stage while the bride and groom either sit on a chair (I was in my DH's lap) or stand and then have the guests gather round. It's such a neat picture. Here are a few other ones. Sorry the quality's not the best. Most of these are from the digital cameras but you get the general idea:
The buffet table set up in the middle of the floor. Tables were set up on either side and there was so much room in the middle of the floor that no tables had to be moved for the dance-just the tables the actual buffet was on. You can also see one of the 2 bars in the background, some of the gorgeous lights and the peaks of the huge German star that's under the table. Please ignore the bride stuffing her face-haha:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3d908b3127cce9b9bb5835e7e00000016108AcNmLZw4ctH
This was our head table up on the stage. We had it set up so the cake was right in front of us (that was taken away during the meal to be served for dessert). Of course you also see my dorky brother taking a picture of someone taking a picture.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3d908b3127cce9b9bb588df4500000016108AcNmLZw4ctH

Thank you so much for suggesting this place. It's exactly what I was looking for! I love that German feel. I know that sounds really wierd but the setup is really kinda neat. Oh yeah-and the bathrooms (well, the women's anyway) are just huge and very bridal dress-friendly. No prob. Glad I could help. We stayed at Casa de Zimmerman (our house).:p We only live 30 minutes away and my IL's live right down the road from us. They were our chauffers and we spent our first night together as hubby and wife in our house. But my cousin actually had her reception at the West Bend Inn and stayed there. I guess they were really happy with it.

I recently went to a wedding at the Chandelier Balloom - very beautiful!! I'm not sure if it was the bride or the reception hall who did this - but they had white lights EVERYWHERE and a gorgeous archway. The food wasn't bad (but I think you can choose your own caterer so...)

The bride and groom are the ones responsible for bringing in the decorations and I agree that white lights are just gorgeous. The archway sounds really nice too. And yup, you get to choose your own caterer although they do have one right out of the ballroom you can reserve. But the list of caterers you can choose from (we were able to get one not on the list but we had to have them approve them first). Glad to hear you had a good time!:)

Does anyone know anyone who's looking to move to Appleton? I know that's probably a wierd question, but I think I'm at my last straw with trying to get out of my lease w/o totally ticking off my landlord. Here's the long story short. My hubby got a job 45 miles away from where we live (Appleton). His job requires residency (he's a cop.) We bought a house in the area he got a job because our landlord said she'd let us out of the lease if we paid to advertise our duplex. I thought that was pretty fair. After we closed on our house, she informed us we are still responsible for all the rent and utilities until our lease ends (May 31). This is only true if we can't find someone to move in. Here's the problem. My husband and I decided that I should live in Appleton until our duplex rents, because it's pointless to have a duplex that we're paying for, but not using (plus, I still work in Appleton.) However, we can't afford to pay mortgage, rent, all utilities, and advertising. (The advertising for property in the Appleton paper is ridiculously high). We can't really even afford to pay rent and mortgage. We never would have bought a house if we hadn't been lead to believe that we were going to get out of our lease. I miss my husband and dog terribly, and staying at our house on the weekends just isn't enough. Please let me know if any of you know ANYONE that may want to rent a (really nice!) place in Appleton. Thanks for letting me vent, too. That helped a little.

Hello Ladies!
Well, looks like FH and I are moving back to WI MUCH sooner than expected! We're looking at moving back at the beginnning of March. We had planned on moving back summer of '07, but with my parents splitting up and a few things going on in FH's family, we're moving much sooner.
I'm so nervous. I've lived there before, and I know what to expect. I just feel so rushed and I'm so sad to leave my parents with their marriage falling apart. I'm crying and I can't exactly figure out why. I think I just need some extra encouragment from my fellow cheese heads! :o

thank you Chiffani!
FH and I are looking into moving back to his hometown, Lake Mills. I went to school in Madison, so I wouldn't mind living there, but since part of the reason we are moving back is due to his neice and she's in LM, I'm sure that's where we'll end up!

I'm sorry you have to leave your parents during their split, but I have to say, it will be nice to have another scrapping girl in our midst!! :D Lake Mills isn't too far from Madison. And I live in Sun Prairie, just to the east and bit closer to you, if you end up in LM anyway... :o

Thank you ladies!
We just got our apartment in Lake Mills yesterday :D . We're really happy with our place! I'll be working in Madison though, so that'll be a good 20 min commute to work everyday...oh well!
Anyway- I would love to get together with everyone for a g2g or some kind of scrapbooking event. Just let me know and I'd be happy to attend--the first free weekend I have isn't until April though (in March we'll be moving and have Neice's b-day party).
I'M SO EXCITED!! Okay, so Michael Buble is on tour right now and he's in Chicago (2 hours away) and I am going to BEG FH to take me!! I am in ::love:: with Buble'! Also, Fall out Boy is coming to Milwaukee, so I may need to check that out too! It's so nice to be able to go see a concert without having to drive 3.5 hours one way :). Can't wait till this summer...SUMMERFEST!! Yay!! So glad to be moving back up north!! :D

Hello! My husband has recently been offered a professorship at UW-M so we will be moving there this Summer. I've been there quite a few times, but don't know a lot about the different neghborhoods, other than Washington heights, which I LOVE. Are there other, similar neighborhoods that we should check out? I'd espcially be interested in those that border the university.
Thanks!

does he have to stay in the city?
If Yes: I'd check out Bay View. Nice area on the south side right on the lake. Very cute area.
the general "east side" is great too.
If No: Shorewood is a cute suburb. It's north of the city but barely 10 minutes from the campus. In fact the whole North Shore area is nice. Whitefish Bay is a bit more upscale. All of the communities in NS (five i believe) all have that city feel, but not necessarily the "negatives" with city living.

Sorry, none on my end :( We built our house and only dealt with the realtor when we bought the land - and that was minimal at best.

Hi msnicolea Is that you from WC? I think I used to visit your journal (I was futuremrsking):) My dad bought a house in Wauwatosa a year and a half ago, I'll ask him who is realtor was. Some of the areas around UWM are really nice, so close to the lake too! I went there for 2 years before transferring to Madison:) We always had fun walking to the lake and such. Oakland Ave. has become much nicer (restaurants/bars/shops) since I lived there too.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but the realtor's name is Dennis Miller at Shorewest Realty, dmiller@shorewest.com
HTH! And hopefully we'll see you in WI:)
We're coming home, we're coming home, we're coming home!!! :D
After 10 years away, we're moving back to the Milwaukee area. It'll be a whirlwind to accomplish - we've gotta be moved by Memorial Day - but I'm so happy!!!
Leaving behind all this crazy urbanity means we're looking to buy our first home, too. Msnicolea, we've gotten referrals to three buyers' agents we're going to interview this weekend, lemme know if you're still looking.

As far as the east side goes there are nice areas as well as pockets of not so nice. I went to the University myself with in the last two years.
Someone posted that Bayside was a nice area and I agree. There are also lots and LOTS of downtown condos that are going up for reasonable prices 175-200k. I am not sure if you want "downtown" life, but if so that is the way to go.
Our realtor was awesome, but her focus is Waukesha county, so if anyone is looking to move to that area....let me know!
Best of luck for your moves.
BTW I was hwiener on WC.

Alrighty MAD area ladies!!! We have a new one in our midst!!
MandyMaloo and her FH have finally made it and settled in! We'd like to plan a gtg to meet her. Gosh, I feel like a stalker or something...Anyway, she (and I'm sure she'll post here, too) states that weekends work best because of work and the east side would be easiest because of where they've settled. So, what does everyones weekends look like coming up?? I'm thinking maybe a Sunday lunch or something?? I know we're busy this weekend (well, I'm working and celebrating Ryan's bday). Starting next weekend, I'm free on Sunday, the 26th, but have plans on Saturday. The following weekend I work again, but the 3-11 shifts, so I could do lunch...
Let's plan!!

I would REALLY like to be able to attend. However, that being said, J is gone or working almost every weekend coming up. And as much as ya'll like kids, Owen is Mr. Crankypants with his teeth coming in and not allowed out in public:p
Sunday the 2nd is the only day until end of April that works for me.
Not that you have to plan around me ;)

I could do Sun. the 26. The next 2 weekends after that we'll be out of town though.
should we try an adult only (what???!!!!!) gtg for our first meeting with her? Maybe let her see how fun we can be before we scare her with all our kidlets?!

Sunday the 26th we have front row tickets to see Stomp :) We're VERY excited and have that whole day scheduled to hang out (my cousin and her BF are joining us) and do an early dinner before the show, so that wouldn't work. I don't know any other "bad" sundays but please don't plan around me either :)

Hello Ladies!
Wow! I feel so welcomed! I love this!! :D Thank you so much for the special meeting!
As wags mentioned- weekends seem to work best for me since I'm kinda hung up at work on weekdays. I'll be busy this saterday (my neice's 4th birthday) and next friday (my honey bought me tickets to see RENT!). Other than that- I pretty open.
And please don't feel like you need to make arrangments for your kids....I love kids! I'm a pre-k teacher so I do very well around them and would love to meet them if you'd like to bring them along. If you'd rather have a day to get away from everything and have an "adult only" type of thing, I'd be perfectly fine with that too!
I can't tell you ladies how much this means to me. It's been kinda hard lately being away from my family. Right now I am home sick with both strep throat AND mono (another side effect from working with children  ) and I've had a lot of time to sit at home and miss my mom and dad. It's so differant being "grown up" now and it'll just be nice to get out and meet some new friends. I'm so greatful to you ladies to welcome me with such open arms! :)
So, I'm up for anything! Please let me know what works best and you can bet I'll be there feeling better (hopefully!) and ready to have a nice lunch! :p

You might regret saying you don't mind kids - I think they outnumber us at this point ;) Seriously, looking forward to meeting you, and I hope we can find a date that works for most of us.
I am only busy Easter weekend, and some Saturdays, but no Sundays so far. Hope we can get together!!

Hey there guys. My best friend called me up and is coming down by me in a few weeks and she wants to go shopping. Where's a good mall in Madison or Milwaukee and how would I get to it from the Watertown area?
Thanks so much!!

03-16-2006, 07:47 AM
Well, in Milwaukee I like Mayfair Mall. If you take 94 east toward Milwaukee, then take 45 north toward Fond du Lac. Get off at North Avenue/Mayfair Road. It's pretty easy to spot. They have some nice stores (some pretty standard), but they also have some unique stores. I like the oil store (can't remember the name) they have unique oils from all over that you can dip bread in.

So it seems like the 26th works for most. Tiff, I'm sure we'll gtg soon again, so you won't be missing too much. Call me! We should have the kidlets play again ;)
Anyway, the 26th. Personally, I'd rather not bring the kids and have some mommy alone time. BUT, if everyone else is bringing theirs, I will too! ;)
What do we want to do?? Lunch somewhere on the east side? Or meeting at the mall and just lunching there and shopping?? What's everyone think??
For me, I think doing a nice lunch somewhere would be good. Ya know, like Applebees, Chili's, etc. We could always go to the mall, too, if we wanna hang more. The more I think about it, the more I think I *may* not bring the kids...we'll see.

Depending on the time we choose I might still come. Even if I come along and just eat an appetizer! The only reason I didn't want to come was to spoil my dinner but then I figured, eh, what the heck.. So I'll keep checking in here and if this winds up being decided over email please include me :) I'll let you know for sure though!

Are you inviting the men-folk?

I wasn't planning on men-folk, just because 1) someone has to watch the kids and 2) sometimes he gets a little antsy at us girls, chattering on and on ;)
