Mike and I live in an apartment with our two cats, Chez and Bogey. Chez is a himilayan and I've had her for 5 years. When she was our only cat we NEVER had a cat smell in our apartment. We got Bogey and ever since, so matter how much we clean the litter box, it smells. It is mostly just in that room, but sometimes, like right after he goes, the smell just takes over the apartment. We have tried different types of litter, True Air filters, Neutra-Air (which is great for temporary "relief" and changing his food. The vet said changing the food should work, but had no recommendation on what to change it to. We went from Kibbles n Bits to Purina One about 2 weeks ago. The smell is still bad, and they are both throwing up so we will probably change it again. I just don't want to change it too often.

Both cats are fixed, so they aren't spraying. The smell is from both pee and poo... he's just a smelly cat in general. So aside from changing his diet, what else can we try in our apartment to control the smell? Our current litter is Tidy Cats for Small Spaces & the litter box is covered. I am praying someone has a "miracle" way to manage this....

I had this problem with my two cats and I switched to an indoor cat food and it got a little better. I also put air freshners alllll over the place and I burn candles all the time.

I have 1 cat and I live in a small apartment with my hubby and the kitty. We have our litter box in the bathroom and I have it covered and swinging door on it. I have filters in it and also there are these air freshners at wal-mart, pulix etc. therea bout 97 cents and there the ones that are in plastic casing and you pull them up and they look like jelly stuff. Well get the ones that are "odor absorbing" I have one sitting right on top of his litter box and boy what a help that is. I also use Special Kitty litter and or Cats pride whichever is on sale or cheaper. Ever since I started this the smell isn't bad at all. Like the above poster I have air freshners everywhere! I scoop his litter box almost daily and I change the entire thing every Friday or Saturday. Just little things can help. I also use purina kitten food and that has helped verses his other food I used to get him. I'm with you though right after Max goes in his littler box (poo) the smell takes over the apartment until the litter takes the smell away, usually about 5 minutes of plugging your nose. Are't cats grand! lol. But hey it's better than puppies pooing all over your carpet! Good Luck!!!!

ps I've also heard having a small bowl of baking soda sitting by the litter box can help absorb smell. never tried it though.
