View Full Version : Femara-- Has it made you O early?

I just finished taking Femara from days 5-9 -- and yesterday (CD 9) I was spotting. I took a OPK and I'm pretty sure that it was positive... which is relatively early for me-- as I ovulated last month on Clomid on CD14-15.
I can't find a straight answer anywhere saying that it can give you a false positive OPK-- but most things I'ved read seem to say that Femara has no effect on them.
The fact that I was spotting makes me think that I will probably we ovulating about 3-4 days early-- anyone else experience this???
Any input would be appreciated!

My RE told me that Femara makes OPK give out false readings. Do you have an ultrasound scheduled to check our follicle growth?

I do, it's on Thursday :D
I'm not terribly stressing-- I just don't want to miss my window of opportunity!
Good to know that your RE told you that Femara CAN give out false positive OPKs... There is so little info out there on Femara as a fertility drug :) The spotting is what is throwing me off...

Wrighty26 - I have O'ed between CD 14 and 16 every time I've been on Femara. I hope you find something out with your u/s this week. Maybe it would be fun to keep taking OPKs and see what they do between now and then?
Scarlatav - My RE chooses to use Femara in lieu of Clomid. He prefers it because it doesn't cause the moodiness that Clomid can and it doesn't build up in the body like Clomid does. What about Clomid makes your doctor think it might have caused a miscarriage?

Thanks for the info Karlatta :) Guess I'm just POAS till my u/s!
I tried Clomid and it worked, but my doc didn't think it was me.... My uterine lining was relatively thin to begin with and Clomid has been known to thin it even more. Femara doesn't seem to have the same side effects.

My lining is incredibly thin on Femara. The RE has no idea why. For months it was okay, and then all of a sudden, bam, thin lining. I'm on Viagra this cycle to try to get it to thicken. I'll know in about a week whether it worked or not.

Wrighty26, I took Femara for 2 cycles and O'd on cd14 both times--one with a trigger but the follicles were mature by cd12. It would be rare to O so soon after finishing your last pill, though, if you did cd5-9 this cycle. If you're cd10 today, can I ask why you're not having a follie check until cd14? That just seems so late to me, because I've seen many REs and they all do those between cd10-12. As for the spotting, have you had any testing done? There could be a non-Femara reason for it. I know that spotting around that time of the cycle has been a sign for me of a polyp, so I thought I'd throw the idea out there that it's unrelated to the medication.
Scarlatav, I'm sorry to hear about your two losses. It's interesting your RE thinks the clomid could be causing miscarriages. Is it related to lining thickness or something? My lining was always borderline on clomid. And I got cysts all the time on it, so every cycle or two I had to take a month or more off of it. The worst problem was the side effects for me, I was on 100mg and it was unbearable for me (& DH). So we switched to Letrozole (Femara).

Karlatta - Wow, it thinned it? I bet your DH never thought you'd be taking Viagra! Good luck this month!
Scooter - I've actually read that Femara can bring on early ovulation in some people, regardless of what day you start. It may not be the case for me-- but I wondering if it had happened to anyone on here.
I've had several blood tests and several u/s done in the last few months and they all come up perfectly healthy. I haven't gone any further than that-- but the Doc didn't see any reason too because I did ovulate last cycle. At my last u/s there were no cysts or anything else out of the ordinary.
The reason that I am going on CD14 is because I didn't O until CD 15 last month (on Clomid) and the doctor was pretty much booked until then. If I do ovulate before my visit--oh well such is life!
Thanks for the input though! Sometimes its comforting just to hear what others are going through.

I'm on my second cycle taking Femara. Last cycle I O'd on CD 15. For the two ovulatory cycles I had before Femara I O'd on CD 22 and 32 Today I'm CD12 and just had my second u/s scan. I have one follicle that is 16mm and some smaller ones. My blood work doesn't indicate that I've started to surge. I get my blood drawn again tomorrow.
