I've never made a gingerbread house and really wanted to make one this year. How do I start? Is it easy? Anyone have pictures to share?

Better Homes and Gardens usually has an issue with gingerbread houses in December. I have made the ones they have using their patterns. They can be difficult to make and assemble if you're making a large house. Have you seen the kits they have at Michaels? That might be the easiest way to start.

usually Target has them in boxes all ready for you to put together.
I am not sure I would recommend those because a few years ago BF and I put one together and it was a disaster. I got very emotional because the friggin house wouldn't stand up :(

We used one of the boxed ones from target last year it wouldn't stay together so I had to go buy more icing and used tons of it on there and then it held perfectly.

Do you eat them in the end or what? I wouldnt want to eat it because it had been out in the open and too pretty to pull apart..

No I didn't eat ours I didn't think ti would be good after sitting out all that time I thought the icing would be too hard and nasty.

Here's the one my brother did. He used the Peeps for the trees and the gingerbread people. I believe the basic structure came from a box/mix, and he bought the M&Ms, Hershey's Hugs Kisses, licorice, additional candy and whatnot separately.

That is adorable I used teddy grahms on mine for the people and used icing to put clothes on them. But I love the gingerbead peeps I can't wait to make one this year!

We did one last year. It was inspired by a house we wanted to build. We found a good recipe online and then drew each wall and roof side on squared paper. Then we used the templates to cut out the gingerbread before sending them to the oven. We used icing to glue them together. A tip is to use thin needles in the corners until the icing has dried.

ETA: Oh forget it. It doesn't work. Sorry!

Last year, DH and I made a gingerbread house from a kit we got at Walgreens. It stayed together really well, but the icing was very hard to squeeze out of the bags. We ate ours since we'd only made it the day before on X-mas eve.

We make them every year with my family! We don't use prepackaged kits, or even real gingerbread, just graham crackers. Each person gets their own can on white frosting and we have at least 10-15 different candies. We go ALL out! Last year I built a two story house that was more than twice the standard house size :)
We don't eat them after, but someone always picks off some of the candy :p
