We have to paint our house. As much as i want vinyl siding it just isn't going to happen for a while. Here is what it looks like now.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d603b3127cce93c014b340b000000026108Das27lm1E I want an olive color with white trim i think. I can see the color in my head but can't really truely describe it. (actually i saw a mobile home coming down the road one day and said "that's it, that's the color I want". But I need visuals. So tell me or better yet show me the color of your home.

My house is a light beige with a dark-red door.

I think olive green would be nice for your house, but only if you framed it with white shutters. The olive has the potential to look too dark, but if you brighten it with white (or cream, or another complementary color) shutters, it will look so beautiful! And I love your front window, it's perfect for a blooming flower box! Good luck!

Our house: shaker beige siding, black shutters, white trim and red door. We're not quite finished painting, but what is completed looks great!

I think the olive would look fantastic on your house. You might even consider using burgundy/maroon for the trim if you use an olive with more brown tones than green.

We are building, and have siding on the sides and back of our new home. It is called clay, but I chose it because it has a greenish undertone... because I love the way light olive looks on a house. Our windows are black framed, and the sills outside are done in the same clay color. Our outdoor lighting is black, our roof is black, and our front door will be black, and it looks really sharp (but I am biased). Of course many people in my life told me I was making a HUGE mistake with the black accents, but now that it's all stating to come together, they have changed their tune!

I say... go for the olive color!

Our home is a nice taupe, kinda like jojoswife, but the shutters, doors and garage door are a cream/vanilla/ivory color. It's very pretty!

Our house is white with green shutters. The trim is obviously white as well. I think olive with white trim would look great on your house. I would pick out a white shade and try to find an olive that will bounce off of the white and compliment it.

our house is a green color..my husband calls it split pea. There was so much I loved about my house that I didn't even care about the color and I was too impatient to have my floor plan built in another color.

Here it is...

you can kind of see the color better here...

Chimichanga, do you know what color the Maroon is? We're looking for a red to paint our house... that seems about the right color.

kcgray, I looove your house. If I could do anything, that's what I'd do -- Craftsman style w/o all of the quirks & hassle of 1920's construction!

We are currently in escrow on a home that needs a paint job. Well, it doesn't really need one, but we're not too keen on the yellow. It was built in 1967, and it has stone facing. We'd like to stick with the Southern California 60's thing, and keep the facing, but the yellow has got to go! We thought about pulling color from the stones, but it might be too drab or a bit too matchy. I'm terrible at this kind of thing. Any ideas?

You can tell I don't post photos very often. I wasn't aware Shutterfly didn't work any longer. Oops! :P

Our house is white, with colonial blue scallops on the bottom front, and maroon shutters.

Oh, Paisley, it's really, really cute! Is it in Pasadena? I'm really happy for you! :)

I agree that the yellow doesn't really work. I love yellow houses, but with the stone work, I don't think it looks right. I'd go with something more earth-toned. If you pull something from the stones, I'd pull a lighter color -- maybe a nice putty. For something a little different, you could go with a paint with a hint of sage green in it.

Paisley, I'm not too familiar with architectural styles in your neck of the woods, but I *think* your house would have been a light natural - like a cream. If you're afraid that would be too drab, you could go with a brighter white.

Kudos to you for sticking within your period style (And the yellow is a good example of what can happen when one doesn't!) Why don't you do a little 'net search to see if there's any info on what your house would have looked like when it was built. Every period has it's enthusiasts - there are probably other who have dealt with the same issues you're going to deal with (both inside and out.) Congrats on the new home!

Thanks ladies!! I knew we were right about that yellow!! I like it on some homes but it looks icky on this one.

MLA, it's actually not in Pasadena. :( Unfortunately, the decent houses start well above the top of our price range!! It's disgusting what $650k will buy, we're talking shacks with one bathroom!! I'm sure you remember it well! ;)

The house is in the deep valley - West Hills. We never even wanted to look out there after our Reseda experience, but I just happened upon this house. We had the lowest expectations when we looked at it, but the neighborhood, amenities, and the POOL just won us over!! I haven't felt that way walking into any of the previous homes we looked at. We don't care that it's in the ass end of the valley, as long as it's not in Palmdale; it really is the armpit of Southern California!

I agree with the earthtones, and it's funny you mention sage! That's kind of what I was thinking. I've been trying to sell my husband on it.

Suzu, I did a preliminary search, but I didn't find much. I may go to the library or a book store to check out pics of houses of that period. I like the idea of a cream, perhap a light taupe. I found this funky Sherwin Williams (http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/paint_colors/paint_color_palette/color_themes/suburban/pdfs/Suburban_ext.pdf) palette. I like the Sage and the Sycamore Tan, but it may be too dark. What do you think?

Sorry you weren't able to find anything in Pasadena. I understand, though. It's tough. I actually spent most of my adolesence in Canoga Park, and I turned out all right. You'll be fine in West Hills. ;) I'm very happy that you found the perfect house. It looks really cute, and it has a pool?!? Score! That's so awesome!

By the way, I spent my youngest years in Lancaster (from age 4 through 10), and I have to tell you that Palmdale is not the armpit of Southern California -- Lancaster is. ;)
