Anyone have suggestions as to lighter book(s) to read while in labour? Doesn't have to be fluffy. Mystery, suspense, romance, sci-fi. Anything goes. Just as long as it's paper back and not to involved. I need to be able to drop it quickly. ;)

Have you read any of Janet Evanovich? The Stephanie Plum Mysteries are my favorites. Very fast read, light, and absolutely hillarious. They are easy to get into and pick up again if you have to put it down.

One of my favorite beach books is The Saving Graces by Patricia Gaffney. But there are parts where I cry. A lot.
For general brain candy, I'd go with Judith McNaught or Nora Roberts for romance, and early Ken Follet or Nelson Demille for spy novels.

I was going to recommend Stephanie Plum, too. Very light reading, entertaining and interesting!
I do have to ask, though - can you really read while in labour? (I'm still amazed that my BIL sat down to dinner while my sister was in labour, though, so I'm obviously a bit clueless on the whole thing!)

I would say the Shopaholic books. If you haven't ever read them, start with Confessions of a Shopaholic. They're very light and hilarious!

In the beginging between contractions there shouldn't be a problem. There's quite a bit of down time.

Meg Cabot's books (Boy Meet Girl, the Boy Next Door, something else) are uber fluffy chick lit, and I know a couple of them are epistolary -- in the form of short emails or diary entries or something. I imagine that would be good. Bridget Jones's Diary if you haven't read it, or the sequel.
I love Jennifer Crusie too -- pretty funny chick lit. Welcome to Temptation is a lot of fun, and not so compelling that you can't drop it fast.

Have you read anything by Jennifer Weiner? She's my favorite "chick lit" author - her books are In Her Shoes, Good In Bed, and Little Earthquakes, which is actually about a group of women having babies and may be relevant to you. :)

I recommend the Shopaholic series too. Very funny and light. You can read it in "snippits" without forgetting what is going on.

I took Diary of a Mad Bride to Be to the hospital. I did read a little bit of it. It's a cute fun book.
We also took our PS2 to the hospital and hooked it up to the TV. We watched Office Space in the morning (baby was born at 4pm) until I couldn't concentrate enough on it. That was a good distraction and one of my favorite memories of labour. :)

I just recently started reading the Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum) books, too. Very light and fun reading..some of it really does make LOL. Metro Girl was good, too, and was actually the first book of hers I read. Good Luck :)
