I'm reading the Kite Runner - I just finshed the chapter of the Kite Fighters competition... well I didn't exactly finish b/c I was so (looking for the right word but I can't seem to find it)... upset. Up to that point, I was really enjoying this story.

I didn't want to post in the other thread b/c I don't want to know the outcome of the story but I'm not sure if I can continue reading - I physically have a hard time reading stories that depict such a horrific act, I mean I really feel sick when hearing/reading/watching anything about that kind of crime. In fact, I didn't even read it - I skipped to the end of the chapter and read how Amir "greeted" Hassan when he came home - I clearly got the picture of what happened and it made me sick.

Did anyone else feel how I'm feeling after that chapter but forge ahead and come out feeling hopeful? Does the story center on what happened to Hassan?

Yes, I know how you feel... I was sick myself. But I want to encourage you to continue reading! That section is pivotal to the character development and rest of the plot (which is definitely worth reading). If it makes you feel any better, I think that is the worst part of the book to read...

It was a very difficult book to get throuhg, but I'm so glad I finished it. I actually stopped reading it a few times because I was getting so upset, but it really was worth going back to.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one... I was scared to find out how disturbing this book could get :(

But based on your encouragement I picked it up again last night and I'm glad I did.

I'm so surprised about how interested I am in these characters - I was skeptical about even purchasing the book b/c of the setting alone (what the heck would I relate to in Afghanistan???) but it has turned out to be very endearing.

Thanks pixiecat & msnicolea!
