WE have a huge tree in our front yard and the yard itself kind slopes down so the rain water reaks havoc on the yard. would it be better to sew the grass our selves with seed, or to get sod?

I would go to a local nursery or garden store and ask if they sell grass seed for shade. I would do it myself.

Our yard is mostly shade and we've had a terrible time with grass. We had sod put in in part of it, and three years later it's mostly a failure. And the landscaper assured us he would put in something that would grow in the shade.

We've had much better luck planting our own, a shade mix from the neighborhood hardware/garden store (not a Home Depot, etc.).

Good luck!

I'd sow it with St. Augustine and put nets over to try to hold the seed down. Otherwise, I'd do sod and stomp it down. It may be too late to seed or sod St. Augustine, though. I'd go to Lowe's and ask the garden guys.
