We're about to have a big problem

IN front of our house we have this beautiful beautiful tree. I love this tree, however if you look where the porch and carport meet, and you can't see it in this pic but it's there is a big old root. It's sticking out of the ground. And it's headed for my carport. Can we dig up that portion of root or must the tree come down (i so hope not). Do I need to get a tree dr out to look at it? Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

I'd call a tree surgeon to come out and look. You can get a root block and put it wherever you don't want the roots going. Basically, they dig up your yard and put a big metal barrier in the ground so the roots won't grow past the barrier and affect your foundation.
