Just starting a new thread over here - I never posted in the old thread, but I lurked. GG is one of my favorite shows - thank God for the TiVo, or else I'd never have seen American Idol this season!
Anyone else's DH watch with them? Mine pretends to not like the show because its a "chick show" but, just now, he made a comment about the storyline. Oh, and I catch him singing along to the theme song sometimes...too funny!
Am looking forward to the next season - I'm curious as to where they'll go with things.

Hello! I'm a Gilmore Girls fan, too. Cliff and I have watched together from the start. I remember the very first episode. We watched because it started a week before Friends, and we have taped it, then TiVo'd it ever since! It's so funny, though, that the older we get, the more we find ourselves relating to Lorelai and the less we find ourselves relating to Rory! It used to be about 50/50 for me. I guess I really am getting old. ;)
That cliffhanger sure was a doozy. I really hope Rory goes back to school *somewhere* in the fall and that she has the maturity to go to her mother and patch things up with her. I hated seeing them not speaking to each other. :(

I have been watching GG since the very first show, too! I have been hooked ever since.
My DH watches it with me - he actually watched it when he was single, and then when we were dating we started watching it together. Of course, he says if I were to tell anyone this he'd deny it!
I can't wait until next season!

Also a GG fan...who's husband watches with them :) Dan thinks the girls are crazy, but he's always up-to-date on the storylines and characters! He also likes the theme song (SHHH...don't tell)...
I actually didn't start watching this show until last year--but no worries, we have the first three seasons on DVD :D
I really liked how the writers turned things around with the ending this season-- yes, they left us hanging with Luke/Lorelai, but they left an even more dramatic cliffhanger with Rory/Lorelai.
Good Stuff!

DH gets almost as excited about the episodes as I do. In fact, he likes to check out the spoiler boards to find out what is going to happen before the episodes. I prefer to not know so that it is a surprise. :)
I liked the season's cliffhanger, but I wanted to smack Rory around and tell her that she was making a huge mistake by being so cruel to her mother and leaving school. I will confess that I never thought she would make a great reporter, but she still shouldn't place so much of her own self esteem in someone else's hands.

LOL, my DH refuses to watch, but he always asks me for a recap after each episode.
I also would love to smack some sense into Rory. She's going to base her entire life plan on what one guy told her? I'm sorry, but I thought she was smarter than that! I do like Logan, though; I think he's a much better match for her than Dean.
And I lovelovelovelovelove Lorelai with Luke. If the writers break those two up again, I swear I am flying to LA and having a little sit-down with them!

I'm new too Gilmore Girl's. I always "knew" about the show but never watched it. This summer I have become obsessed, I TIVO every episode. (So here I always have at least one a day to watch). It's a wonderful show.

I love GG! For a while I was watching it daily for the episodes I had missed prior and my FH thinks I'm nuts. He, however does sit and watch it with me (he will tell other people I am GG obsessed, but would NEVER tell his friends he watches).
It sucks that the season is so short though (even though I know it has the same number of episodes). There is such a long gap between Nov and Jan when they break and now the summers are so long...new season won't start until Sept...guess I have to settle for reruns.

Big fan :D
I can't wait to see how they resolve the cliffhanger. I really hope that Rory gets some sense and goes back to school. She shouldn't give up on her dream just because one guy told her he didn't think she had what it takes. She should be working even harder to prove him wrong. I'm not a Logan fan, so hopefully that won't work out. Still on the fence about L/L. I like seeing them together, though.
Any news on when the new season will start?

I love all of the husbands watching :) although, it is just great TV.
Does anyone relate to the Lorelai/Emily relationship? That's pretty much me and my mom-- even though I didn't get pregnant and leave home @ 16 (oh, and my mom doesn't have money!). My mom is, however,THE QUEEN of guilt trips/strings attached. I still have a glimmer of hope that we will have a "normal" relationship someday. I love her, but he antics drive me up a wall.
I don't necessarily like the concept of Logan-- but as far as chemistry with a boyfriend goes--they really go well together. Plus, he stood up for Rory-- which honestly surprised me.
I don't remember who said it-- but I agree-- I think Rory would make a HORRIBLE journalist!
Man, I cannot wait for this show to start again! Only 2 more months, hopefully

I too *LOVE* Gilmore Girls.....I've watched it since the begining. My boyfriend loves to watch it with me and if there is ever a night that he can't watch we have to tape it and then watch it together (he says i'm not allowed to watch without him because I'm notorious for letting the plot slip....lol) He would NEVER tell his friends that he watches it with me......but he also loves Extream Makeover Home Edition and I've seen him shed a tear or too...lol.
I might be an outsider here, but I actaully like Rory with Logan for some reason. Everyone seems to think that he is getting her into trouble, but she is a big girl and can make up her own mind........she is the one who accepted the job with his dad and he tried to talk her out of it!

Another big GG fan here!
I watch it alone, or by holding the remote hostage :p DH says like someone else's DH said, "Nobody talks like that!" But I love it.
I hated the idea of Logan/Rory at first, but I think he's growing on me. I think they'd be pretty good together. And L/L? I love that they are together. I was watching reruns on ABC family, and the chemistry between them has been building since the first season. It's natural that the show would take that direction as far as Lorilai's (SP?) relationships go.
I can't wait 'til next season!

Same here! The more I get to know him, the more I like him. Maybe not marriage material, but definitely fun to hang out with during those college years. I think their relationship is totally believable because he does bring out the more free-spirited side of her.
I still don't get why Rory has to leave Yale just because she may not pursue being a journalist. College is about taking classes in different subjects and figuring out what you want to do. I must have changed my major 3 times! I think few people actually end up having a career in their major anyway.

Is it just me or does Logan give you a picture of what Rory's dad must've been like back with he was in his late teens/early twenties?
I'm really looking forward to next season. What will Rory do with her life? Will Lorelai and Luke get married? Will Lorelai or Rory end up pregnant? I have this suspicion that Lorelai's pregnancy "scare" from last season was a "mom's intuition" thing and Rory will find herself pregnant next season. Then again, I may have just watched too many soap operas.... ;)

I'm guessing someone will be pregnant next season. I don't think it will be Rory (although wouldn't that be a gripping storyline)! I think Rory and mom will have a very distressing relationship with Rory moving in with her parents.

I love Gilmore Girls! I totally forgot that Rory moved in with Richard and Emily! Woah...
I tend to like Logan. At first I thought he was too flighty, but he's settled down some and seems to be a pretty good bf to her. The fact that he stood up for her was great! Plus he's really hot too!
I hate waiting til fall for all the good shows! At least it's forced me to do things around the house instead of always watching tv!

My theory is that Lorelai IS pregnant... I mean she never took a pregnancy test... that whole "I'm not pregnant because I ate an apple" think doesn't fly with me!
I do agree that Rory shares her taste in men with Lorelai. Jess was a complete ass, yet you (at least I) saw the initial attraction-- and he too left just like Christopher-- where as Dean/Max were orginally so similiar. Very safe, very good guys-- that weren't quite dangerous enough for them. I could overanalyze this show forever (especially since I've been watching the DVDs)!
Who's your favorite townie on the show?
I think mine is Kirk. He cracks me up every time he's onscreen-- though I have a soft spot for Michel and Babette too!

Excluding Luke, since he's moved beyond being another "townie" and Sookie, my favorite would have to be Babette. I just love her! I want a neighbor like Babette.
BTW, I've watched the first 3 seasons on DVD (4 better come out soon!) and I watch reruns on ABC Family most days. Oh, and, um, often I'll watch the morning episode (which is a repeat of the episode from the prior evening) even if I saw it the day before. And, of course, I watch the summer reruns of Season 5 every Tuesday on the WB.

But Jason used to watch it with his mom, so when we started dating that was the one show that he watched that I didn't already watch (yeah, because as you know I'm a total TV-addict), so I got hooked fast.
It used to really bother me that the dialogue was so fast & witty - especially between Lorelei & Rory. It just didn't seem like a natural way for "real" people to carry on a conversation. But I dunno...I guess I've just gotten used to it now, or something. I wish I was that good at coming up with quick witty come-backs when I'm talking or arguing with someone...hee hee!

I'm so glad...that's only about 7 weeks. Seems like it's been forever since the finale.
Defintely love the Girmore Girls! I happened to catch one episode last season about 1/2 way through, and immediately fell in love with it! I promptly purchased seasons 1, and 2. Season 3, and 4 will go on my Christmas list.
I too watch rerun after rerun. :) My DH really likes the show. There is very little TV we watch together, but I can always get him to GG with me. :p
Kirk is definitely my favorite townie. When I first started watching, I couldn't figure out why he had no less than 10 jobs at all times. Now I realize it's just what he does. He's like a professional employee. :D
Although I haven't watched Season 1 in a while, wasn't Kirk's name, "Kirt" early on? I noticed right away after watching the first and second seasons w/i days of eachother.
So, I'll be here anxiously waiting for September 13th!

In the second episode, Sean Gunn appears as 'Mitch' the DSL installer. Later in the season he became Kirk. I don't believe they ever called him Kirt, but I could be wrong.
Mitch! That was it. I knew it was something that sounded fairly similiar to Kirk.

I have been watching the GG reruns-- and while I wasn't a big fan of Logan in the last couple of episodes-- I kinda like him now. I can't explain it.
I think I like that Rory is with a guy that challenges her. Dean was so damn boring (cute, yes, but boring) and a wife cheater. Jess was too snarky (I actually liked Jess-- but never thought that in the "real world" he would be interested in someone like Rory--which is funny that they are dating in real life!). Tristan was after the chase (which, I don't think Logan is).
This next season should be very interesting!

Another Gilmore Girls fan here! It has been the only show I had to watch for the last couple of years. I didn't watch it at first because it was on opposite Buffy when I first heard of it, but one day when B was on a rerun, DH and I watched GG and were hooked. I've managed to catch a lot of the earlier stuff during the Gilmore Girls: Beginnings showings, but I don't own any of the DVD box sets... yet.
I love Luke and Lorelei together, I will just cry if they don't get married. I'm not sure if they will get engaged now but they must stay together or it will make me sad.
As for Logan, I thought he was fine for Rory at first but now I just think he's a big jerk. Doing that stupid item "exchange" was just a dumb prank, yeah. But, when he was letting another person get in trouble, possibly fired, over it just to cover his own behind? Grrrr... that made me loose all liking for him. I think Rory would be better off with her college friend, I forget his name, but the one who watches Three Stooges with her and is totally in love with her. <3

I just finished tonights 2 hours of Gilmore Girls on the WB. Every couple of commercials they gave a teaser for next season. It starts with "Last season ended with a question...This season begins with an answer" or something like that, then shows Lorelai, sitting, proposing to Luke, then pans to his face, and then her standing up and then it cuts. ARGH!! Can I make it through the next 3 weeks?!?! My eyes would tear up every time I saw that teaser!

DH actually tried to get me to believe he was going to take me out to a "very special dinner" on Sept 13th. He was going on and on about how he wanted to spend a nice evening with me, all the while he had this HUGE mischievious grin on his face. What a goober! :D

Just one more week to go until the Season Premiere! It was great to watch the last 2 episodes of last season tonight, especially the end where they said, "Next week on Gilmore Girls..." and gave the teaser for the premiere. Along with Luke's "answer" I'm really interested in seeing what happens with Rory and her court hearing.

I FINALLY got to see the season finale after having missed it when it aired. So much drama! I can't wait until next week.
I will say, though, that I think Lorelei is wrong to ride Rory so hard about going back to school. If, for whatever reason, you don't know what you want to do, taking a break is the best idea. Rory just needs some time off.
Man, I'm always talking like these are real people! :o

Continueing on that line...
I think she is so upset about Rory taking a break, because she herself had to quit school when she was so young. Sure, she's in a good place now, but she wants her daughter to have a better place, and get there more easily.
Personally, I think Rory got too upset over the opinion of 1 person whom she barely knows. Sure, he has credentials, but can she really trust him?

Exactly! Especially considering his relationship to Logan and the fact that his wife (Logan's mom) does not approve of Logan dating her.
I personally think it would be better for her to stay in school and at the very least explore other career choices. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I was a freshman, but taking a number of classes helped me figure out my likes and dislikes. I wonder what she'll do now?

ITA agree with this - I remember when I watched this episode a few months ago I thought it was very weird for her to just totally throw in the towel on her dream career because of that one man's opinion.
Looking forward to the season premiere! :)

I agree with you there. College is a time to explore your options and interests. I went into college planning on a career in politics, so I majored in PoliSci. But a year into it I decided Criminology was the better path for me. And then there was my freshman year RA. She was a senior and a biology major, but part-way through the year she changed her major! She had to stick around a while longer to finish, but she found something she really enjoyed.
And I agree you don't give up on your dream because of one bad "review." However, if you look back on the years Rory's reaction was very much in keeping with her character. She flipped out when she got a D during her first few months at Chilton, then she flipped out when a professor at Yale suggested she drop his class because she couldn't handle the workload of 5 classes. She sets such high expectations for herself and when she doesn't seem to be meeting them, she falls apart. Now, with an "important" man in journalism telling her she can't cut it, it's more than she can handle and she's running away.
mierin
09-08-2005, 10:22 AM
Eek! I sparked a debate! :D
I agree that she's letting one person's opinion sway her too much, but if all it took was one opinion than perhaps she wasn't as sure as she always thought about being a journalist. And I think it can be healthy and beneficial to take some time off from school. I knew several friends who did while I was there and they all came back, having gotten some work experience and were better for it.
If you need a break, you need a break and there's no sense in trudging through classes and wasting money if you don't want to be there. She is most certainly being very sensitive and overracting, but she seems burned out and if she really thinks a break is best, have at it.
See, these are totally real people to me.

I agree for the most part, but Rory quitting school seems really out of character to me. In the past if Rory has had difficulties like this, it would have made her work that much harder to prove them wrong. It's not like her to just sit there and take it and end her dream because of it.

Taking a break or not; giving up on journalism or not, those are Rory's decisions to make, be they right or wrong decisions in the end.
What I can't decide is, was Lorelei right to try to force Rory to stay in school? Encourage her, sure, but she was trying to leave her with no options. And, were Richard and Emily right to take Rory in when she had nowhere else to go, thus undermining their own daughter and breaking the agreement they had previously made?
I like how this show is about the relationships of the 3 "Gilmore girls" to each other. The Emily-Lorelei relationship has certainly taking a few turns for the worse of late.

Hmm..major story lines that I can think of are:
- Lorelai asking Luke to marry her.
- Lorelai got an offer to sell the Inn, and Luke thought she might take the opportunity.
- Rory quitting school after Mitchum Huntzberger told her he didn't think she had what it takes to be a journalist
- Rory and Logan still dating
- After Mitchum talked to Rory, she and Logan stole a boat and got arrested
- Rory told her mom that she was quitting school and she freaked out
- Lorelai went and told her parents about Rory's decision. They all agreed that it was the wrong decision to make. They had planned to confront her, but Rory showed up early and cried in front of Richard. When Lorelai showed up, her parents told her that Rory was moving into the poolhouse and quitting school. Lorelai and her parents aren't speaking, and it doesn't appear that Lorelai and Rory are either.
I can't think of anything else, but hopefully that's enough to get you caught up for the premiere tonight.

On to tonight's epidsode. I didn't think it was great. I am not going to be happy with this season if it is all about the conflict between Lorelie and Rory. The entire reason so many people watch this show is because of the mother/daught dynamic that is so awesomely unreal.

Recap:
It started with that answer to the marriage proposal, Luke said YES! Later that night Luke told Lorelai he bought a house for the kids (that he says they don't have to have) but gave it up. Then Lorelai was walking by and saw a house for sale and the Realtor was there so she stopped to talk to her. The volume on the show went mute at this point so we missed some stuff here.
Luke picked out a ring for Lorelai from Kurt's extensive ring collection that he got from widows. Strange!
Emily stripped the pool house of furniture to have it redone to Rory's liking.
Paris found out about Rory quitting and freaked, went to Lorelai's outraged but calmed down when Lorelai gave Paris her cell phone and told her she could call anytime.
Logan threw a party in honor of Rory's court appearance, and he commented that she would only make it out of school for 1 month. Rory met the attorney that would be representing her. He was said to be able to get her out of anything.
Emily showed up at Lorelai's house to get the rest of Rory's things and Michel answered the door - Emily was outraged that Lorelai wasn't there and didn't have any of the stuff ready.
Rory had her court appearance and the judge was pretty harsh - gave her 300 hours community service and a chance to drop her record in 5 years with no repeat offenses.
Emily had left notes around Lorelai's house and a message on her machine outraged at Lorelai for not being there when she came by to get the stuff so Lorelai took the stuff to Hartford in the middle of the night and told her parents they had won, they had the daughter they always wanted now.
At the very end, Lorelai broke down about Rory being gone (Lorelai didn't meet the attorney, go to the court date, or talk to Rory the entire show). You hear a door close and Luke say something to the effect of, "the moon is full and this is the moment."
Previews for next week show Rory doing her community service, and Rory visiting Luke. Luke tells Rory about the engagement and Lorelai and Rory finally talk to each other.

Yay for Gilmore Girls being back! I liked tonight's episode-- I think that the conflict between Rory and Lorelei is real and is something that all mothers and daughters go through at some point or another-- even if they are really close. It's true what Lorelei said-- you have to make your mistakes before you can really grow up.
I thought Luke hair looked silly! Anyone else with any thoughts on that? From I hear it's definitely going to be about the Lorelei/Rory conflict for the majority of the year- but who knows-- it could be resolved sooner than we think!

Wrighty26: "I think that the conflict between Rory and Lorelei is real and is something that all mothers and daughters go through at some point or another-- even if they are really close."
Sure, real mothers and daughters have conflict but this is not a real mother/daughter relationship. People watch this show for its outrageously witty banter and the dynamic these two women share. This is not a 'drama' to any real extent so for the writers to expect an audience to hold on when the two main characters are being riped apart, I don't think it will happen. We love the Gilmore relationship, without it, I think the show is thin. IMO.

I guess I'm the odd one out then-- one of the reasons I LOVE this show is because I can totally relate to the relationship that Lorelei has with Emily. Yeah, I like the witty banter, but I like the serious stuff too. Some of the BEST shows have been due to Emily/Lorelei conflict, IMO, so it's intriguing to see it between Rory and Lorelei too. I'm sorry that you don't enjoy that aspect of the show though!!! I hope for your sake it is cleared up quickly :D

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy all aspects of the show!! The Emily/Lorelie relationship is much more realistic, therefore their drama plays well into the story....basically, that is their only story-- conflict. Whereas Rory/Lorelie we aren't used to seeing in conflict. This series was based on a strangely close, loving, and unique relationship between a very young mother and her daughter. If the audience can no longer see that relationship, we've lost the original intent, therefore maybe some of the original flair and audience.
But don't get me wrong, I still love the show!!! I just worry the writers are trying to dig too dip, which can make audiences uncomfortable.

I'm so glad it's back for the season!!! Overall I thought the episode was really good. I think the conflict between Rory and Lorelei seems very real and understandable. I do hope they make up soon because I love seeing their mother/daughter relationship so close. I feel sad to see that Rory is not included in the excitement of Lorelei's engagement.
I also didn't really pick up that Logan disapproved of Rory dropping out, but more so didn't really think it was her personality. I think he was just questioning if she was being true to herself, which I completely respect him doing. It will be interesting to see their relationship dynamics, though, living somewhat long-distance and living such different lifestyles.
One thing that really bugged me about this episode - when Paris went to visit Lorelei, she asked Luke who he was. She's from Star Hollows, too - how could she not know who Luke is?

Paris isn't from Stars Hollow. The only she had ever been there was last year (not long before the season finale) when her, Rory and Lane got very, very drunk at some local festival. she grew up in the town that Chilton was in.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I am totally with you on this Michelle. I wasn't sure if they were trying to give him some sort of style or what, but it was distracting not to see his baseball cap at all and the style was a little greasy. Despite the hair issues, I still love me some Luke! :D I am so glad Gilmore Girls is back!
I do enjoy seeing the conflict between all of the mothers and daughters, as I think this show is one of the few to depict that relationship in a realistic light. I just hope it doesn't continue ALL season- I miss the Rory/Lorelai banter. And I was sad in the previews to see that it looks like Luke tells Rory about the engagement.
Wrighty26

I agree that Logan wasn't necessarily disapproving of Rory's decision-- but was worried that she was out of her element (and she totally is). It's going to be REALLY weird seeing "party girl" Rory-- I agree with Logan--she'll be back in school in no time!
I really thought that Paris had met Luke before too--- There was some dinner that Lorelei had at the Inn (not the Dragonfly- the other one) in season two that Paris ended up at and I swear Luke was there, but maybe not.... This show is usually pretty good about continuity...
I was also sad that Luke looks like he's the one to tell Rory about the engagement.:(
EmilyBronte
09-14-2005, 07:02 AM
Paris also met Luke at the diner once - there was some newspaper competition at Chilton and Paris wanted to write and article that blew the lid off of small town life. So, Paris and Rory went into the diner where Paris questioned Luke about truck drivers, etc, and Luke basically threw her out.

Me too! And Babbette running down the street holding her boobs was helarious! I laughed SO HARD!
And I guess I'm in the minority about Luke's "look." When he was waiting for Lorelai to finish getting ready, I thought he looked terrific. He was clean shaven, and he is looking mighty fit & trim. Of course, I love scruffy Luke too. What can I say, I'm a big Luke fan. :D
Hey, did anyone else find Rory's facial expressions during the hearing rather off-putting? I can't put my finger on it, but the best description I can come up with is she looked like she thought the whole thing was just a big nuisance. It seemed that once that smarmy lawyer told her not to worry about it, she stopped taking it seriously. She really did come off as a rich kid who didn't think she'd done anything wrong. And I thought the lawyer's demeanor made her seem unapologetic and spoiled.
It'll be interesting to see if they show how Logan's case turns out. Last we heard his dad's lawyers were "working on it" and they were accustomed to this kind of thing.

I really liked this episode and thought it was a good intro into the new season. I'm so happy for Luke and Lorelei :D, and really hope that this relationship goes all the way to the end.
I think that the conflict between Lorelei and Rory is a nice change, and while I love their closeness and banter, I like seeing a different dynamic with these two. It cracked me up when Rory said to Paris that she was "grown up, independent, and living on her own"...uh, if you call running to grandma and grandpa for help and living in their pool house all of those things, then...okay! :p
Michel was great as always, but I was a little surprised to see his coldness towards Emily, because when they first met didn't they get along great?
I'm looking forward to next week.

I'm so glad this show is back!!
I did get the feeling Logan wasn't happy with the "new" Rory. I think despite his being a world-class slacker he liked and respected that Rory was a driven woman and diligent student.
I completely agree. Just to defend Logan a little more, I don't think he's "bad for Rory." After all, this is the first time in her whole life that she's come out of her shell, had a good time, explored her horizons... and you know you HAVE to do that at some point in college. Logan helped her open up, and that's a good thing. Even if she took it too far. But now I think Logan is seeing what Rory has become and isn't happy about it. He'll support her, but he loves the studious, ambitious Rory he met at the paper. I bet that when Rory realizes she's alienating all the people who love her, it'll be a big wake up call.
The Paris/Lorelei scenes were HILARIOUS. I'm sure that in the next episodes we will see Paris calling Lorelei's cell a number of times. That should be interesting.
re: Luke/Lorelei.... I don't think they'll screw it up. But I don't think things will be completely right with them until Lorelei patches things up with Rory. How can she think about moving on and having a new family when she's just "lost" her daughter? I think this will remain a source of conflict for Luke & Lorelei, especially when they talk about having kids of their own.

I was very confused at the end with the door opening and slamming. When the door first opened Lorelei thought that Rory came back but it wasn't her. I couldn't figure out who it was and why. Did anyone catch that?

Hey, did anyone else find Rory's facial expressions during the hearing rather off-putting? I can't put my finger on it, but the best description I can come up with is she looked like she thought the whole thing was just a big nuisance. It seemed that once that smarmy lawyer told her not to worry about it, she stopped taking it seriously. She really did come off as a rich kid who didn't think she'd done anything wrong. And I thought the lawyer's demeanor made her seem unapologetic and spoiled.
Yeah, I kind of noticed that too.

I enjoyed the episode overall. But, I just don't feel... right about the Luke/Lorelei engagement. Not that they'll neccesarily break it off like she did with Max, but there is something there that isn't right. I think she does have to "make up" with Rory so she won't need the engagement as an excuse to be happy anymore. Then she can just be happy about the engagement for it's own sake.
I loved Paris' reaction when she found out Rory ws dropping out and Logan walked in, and she was like "YOU!" all full of Paris-scorned fury.
Vishenka69, at the end that was Luke coming in to get Lorelei to go outside (under the romantic full moon ;) ) so that he could give her the engagement ring and have his moment... since she proposed to him.

OK, is it just me or is anyone else stumped over how on earth Rory can be drinking at a bar when she isn't 21 yet? We've seen a LOT of Rory drinking in the last year, and she won't be 21 until October (as Lorelai pointed out in last night's episode). And yes, I know a lot of under-aged college kids drink, but still...How does she keep getting away with it in public?

Actually, since you brought that up..Last night when I was watching I kept waiting for her to get busted drinking. Right before the bar scene was the scene with the lawyer who said "I'm sure nothing like this will ever happen again" and Rory looked all innocent and said "No sir". I thought it was foreshadowing...but as we know, it didn't play out.

Yeah, they've always liked each other, in passing. I think he was just really put off that he was sent to Lorelai's house to do something that he thought was beneath him. Michel is too prim and proper for that.
I can't wait until next week when Lorelai and Rory come face to face...should be interesting. And I think the thing between them will play out and not dominate the entire season.

NEW YORK (September 14, 2005) - SUPERNATURAL and GILMORE GIRLS got The WB Network off to a flying start to the 2005-2006 television season.
GILMORE GIRLS, in its sixth season, is showing no signs of slowing down. GILMORE GIRLS also achieved the best ever Tuesday 8-9 p.m. premiere in the history of The WB among women 18-34 (4.5) and women 18-49 (4.0) as well as the series' new record premiere performance among adults 18-34 (3.1), adults 18-49 (2.8) and women 18-49 (4.0). Woo-hoo! Go Gilmore Girls :)

As far as the drinking, I agree with what's been said about it being easy to get. She's a college kid in a college town with rich buddies, what is there to worry about? It happens everyday. You would think though, that knowing how Rory is, she would be more careful because of the new record and try not to get into anymore trouble. But I think this is Rory being wild and she needs to do it.

You're right, it was before the trial. I kept expecting her to get caught and that was going to be the reason for a harsh punishment. I figured she wasn't getting off easy from the preview teasers showing Emily freaking out in court.

I was kind of hoping that the judge in Rory's case would find out about her dropping out of Yale. She asked Rory something about her being a student at Yale, and she replied that yes, she is. Then she said she couldn't do 300 hours of community service because she has to get a job. I was hoping the judge would ask why she needed a job when she was going full-time to Yale. (Yes, I know plenty of college kids work during school; I was one of them.)
Is Sookie gone forever? Where did she go?

Maybe the Judge didn't question her getting a job because it's summer vacation time in Gilmore land right now.

Was Sookie's actress really pregnant, and on maternity leave during the filming of the first episode or 2? Or was it just that they didn't "need" Sookie plot-wise?

I haven't found any info that Melissa McCarthy was pregnant. I think it's just storyline and that's why she won't be around for a couple of episodes. I think they will do the season like the season when Rory first went to Yale and have a couple of "summer" episodes and then it will be fall. By then of course, her baby will be older and she'll probably be back at the inn.

As much as I hate seeing Lorelai and Rory estranged, this new arrangement is really giving insight into what it was like for Lorelai to grow up in that house. Emily looked really angry after she caught Rory helping the maid. I just don't get the whole "ignore the help" thing some rich people do. I suspect "the good life" will wear on Rory and she'll miss the cozy, simple life her mother gave her.
That shoving match between Rory and another "road worker" reminds me of her and Paris. Think her road nemisis will become one of her best friends?
Speaking of best friends, I'm dying for Lane to get back from her tour and weigh-in on the recent events in Rory's life.
And is it just me, or did it seem odd that Rory would complain she didn't have time for a job because she has to complete 300 hours of community service in "just 6 months"? Working 5 hours a day, it's only going to take 60 days - that's roughly 2 months. She has time to fit in a part-time job! It's not like she's going to school. I worked over 50 hours/month while going to college full time, and I got really good grades.

I, too, like how we see a little into how Lorelai was raised. It makes you completely understand why she is the way she is. Sometimes I thought, how bad could it be? She just wasn't meant to be a rich girl. And I agree that Rory will be starving for attention and will go back to Stars Hollow and Yale. Her grandparents just don't see how miserable she is.
And the look on Rory's face when the DRA ladies said she'd have to join to get the job! She looked shocked at the idea!
I love the whole Paul Anka thing. It shows how much Lorelai really misses Rory. Before she NEVER would have thought to get a pet.
And I thought it was so cute that Lorelai didn't have to come out and tell Luke why she didn't want to sell her house. He just knew what she was getting at and didn't press it. He knows her too well.

Oh, and let me clarify that I'm not complaining - I'm so grateful to have a house and power and TV at all (cable came back Saturday) that it would seem wrong to complain at this point about missing a TV show. My area got mostly wind damage (I'm 30ish miles north of NOLA) and it was so selective - some people got trees in the roof, some didn't - and DH and I are so, so lucky that our home is relatively unscathed. But, it's hard to not miss the things from before, when life was more normal.

Jillybean -
Lorelai got out of the car and went up to Rory and said something like, "So this is how you're repaying society? The system's made you hard?" In an angry tone.
And then Rory says: No! We're not supposed to be talking to outsiders.
So Lorelai says "fine" and turns around and walks away. Rory looks back at her and yells, "You and Luke got engaged and you didn't tell me? That hurt." And then Lorelai said "Back atchya." And that's how it ended.
I don't remember all of the previews for next week, but I do know that Lorelai tells Luke that she doesn't want to set a wedding date until things are straight with Rory.

I missed tonight's episode - can somebody do a quick recap for me?
Here is the blurb from the WB:
Rory (Alexis Bledel) begins serving her 300 hours of community service and finds that life on a road crew is not pretty. Lorelai and Luke try to decide whether they will fix up Lorelai's house or buy the Twickham house. Luke's sister Liz (guest star Kathleen Wilhoite) begs him to hire her husband T.J. (guest star Michael DeLuise) as a contractor. When Rory pays Luke a surprise visit at the diner to find out how Lorelai is, he feels obligated to tell her that he and Lorelai are engaged. Afterwards, Luke confronts Lorelai about her estrangement from Rory. Feeling lonely, Lorelai adopts a dog at the Stars Hollow pet fair. Finally, during a chance meeting, Lorelai and Rory have an angry confrontation about their mutual hurt feelings.
Also, Emily arranges for Rory to get a job at the DAR if she will apply to join. And Richard and Emily fire their maid because Rory is lonely and gets too chummy with her and helps her polish the silver.

I think Lorelai's dog is great, it has lots of baggage, just like her. :p

Not surprised that Lorelai will want to patch things up with Rory before her wedding plans can go ahead. They've been best friends for so long, she needs to have Rory share her happiness.

I really liked the insight into how life at the Gilmore's can really be too, and I think that Rory is already getting sick of it.
I was bummed that they didn't pick up from last week with Luke calling Lorelei outside as I really wanted to see the proposal. I also would've loved to have seen Sookie's reaction when Lorelei told her about the engagement, and everything that was going on with Rory. These are important things writers that shouldn't be left out! :p
I thought the fight between Luke and Lorelei was reallly well done, and was happy to see her owning up to the fact that Luke was in the middle, rather than just stomping off angry and blaming Luke for everything like she's done in the past.
One question though...why doesn't Logan also have to do community service also? I mean both he and Rory stole the boat right, or did I miss something? Did his dad get him out of it?

Since Rory had her own lawyer and accepted a plea, Logan's outcome can be very different. Nothing has been shown or said of Logan's case since the finale where Logan told Rory his dad's lawyers were "on it" and were well accustomed to getting him out of such jams.

That being said, I thought that Emily and Richard were hilarious and I especially liked Emily's tips on how to survive prison! How funny was it when the phrase "fight face" came up again. The fight b/w Luke and Lorelei was also really good and I thought they both made their points well.

Does anyone relate to the Lorelai/Emily relationship? That's pretty much me and my mom-- My mom is, however,THE QUEEN of guilt trips/strings attached. I still have a glimmer of hope that we will have a "normal" relationship someday. I love her, but her antics drive me up a wall.
That's me and my mom in a nutshell too... my mother is a compulsive liar, which doesn't help things.
I love the Luke and Lorelei relationship, with one HUGE issue for me. Never once last season did they ever say 'I love you.' That bugs me a lot.
As for Rory and Logan - Frankly, I much prefer Rory and Logan to Rory and Dean. I'm not a big fan of anyone dating married guys.

I relate quite a bit to the Lorelei/Emily relationship w/my mom too. I think one of the reasons I like GG is probably because I take more after my father's personality and really see myself, if I ever should have a daughter, relating more like Lorelei and Rory. I wish for that kind of relationship with my mom, but it takes two to have it. My mom "thinks" we're close, but when I really try to open up and be vulnerable, it usually gets slapped in my face. I don't think my mom "gets" how her behavior damages the potential we have... but hopefully it will get better in time. I'm able to "pinpoint" her manipulativeness now (finally!) at age 29 and, therefore its better now than it was a couple of years ago (when they catch on that you "catch on," the respect goes up), ...I still hold out some amount of hope! At the same time, I've had to come to accept that it might never happen, and that I should be grateful for the relationship that we do have and also grateful that God has also brought other women into my life who have been older, wiser and emotionally available to help me along the way. ~ j.

Am I the only one who thinks this season is not as good as the previous seasons? I know that Loralei and Rory are on the outs, but it seems as though the show doesn't have enough passion and sharp rhetoric. Anybody else have this opinion?
I do but it could also be that I'm just tired these days, having a baby.... I still love the show, but I was falling asleep last night - and I usually don't fall asleep until at least 9 these days! :) Maybe it's just the new characterization of Rory I don't like... though it's certainly a good role for her to be playing such a different person, allowing her to branch out, etc.

I thought the first episode of the season was great. So funny and so much happened. But I think the past two episodes were really not up to their usual high standard. Not very funny at all and nothing much happened. I think the less we see of T.J, the better! Also, I think what is missing is the interaction of the main characters. No Lorelei and Rory; no Lorelei and her mom, which was usually some of the funniest and most dramatic stuff; no Rory and Paris. Anyway, the show is suffering, IMO. But I hope they get it back on track.

I guess I'm in the minority. I've loved the new season so far - last night's episode in particular. I thought it was the best of the 3 episodes. Next week should be good too, with Rory and Lorelai together for the baptism of Sookie & Jackson's kids.

Well I wasn't all the impressed by last night's episode, and really only loved the scenes with Luke and Lorelei. TJ bugs me to no end, and I really wish they hadn't brought his character to Stars Hollow. The whole Lane and her band playing the Seventh Day Adventist churches storyline was a little BS, considering that that religion does not allow rock music or dancing. Now Rory is the "captain" of her community service trash pick team, and loves the DAR? That's certainly a huge jump from last week when she was seeing what it was actually like to live with Richard and Emily, and getting picked on and angry glares from all of the "convicts". I was actually hoping they'd continue with it, and have Rory second guessing her situation of living with E & R (although I was happy to see her back at Yale in the end and possibly re-thinking that decision).
Hopefully next week will be better.

I was initially surprised that Rory was leading her trash pick-up group, but it has been a couple months in Stars Hollow land since the last episode. I think the point there was to show just how ambitious she is. She's putting as much into her Community Service as she did into her education. It'll be interesting to see how she copes with all her free-time once she completes her 300 hours.
As for the DAR, she seems to enjoy the work (though maybe she should tell a person she'll call them back, not put them on HOLD to chat with her grandmother and answer a call on her cell phone  ). However, she did not look happy to be inducted into the DAR. She looked more unhappy during that ceremony than she did in court!

I think this season is getting a bit of a slow start, but I'm sure there will be more Lorelai-Rory and Lorelai-Emily interaction... eventually. I missed having Kirk around, but at least Michel had some good lines.
All of the Rory settling into her new situation (community service, DAR secretary) made sense to me, as this episode was supposed to take place months after last week's episode. Rory is a smart girl, and though quiet, she gets along well with others, so I'm not surprised she managed to fit in everywhere she goes. And, I loved the bit at the end, where she saw the Yale campus and had to go back to the DAR induction luncheon. You could totally see her thinking about where her life is going... and not in a good way.

GG usually does an ep or 2 that's beginning of/during summer and then jumps to the start of fall. That's why Rory's got a new haircut. Is it just me or do bangs make her look younger?
And, yes, ITA with both of you on the phone thing, that really bugged me. I had to think "it's just a show... it's not real..."

That's right, I did forget that some months had passed between last week and this one, so I guess her making the best out of a bad situation makes sense. I was laughing about the phone thing and couldn't believe the writers didn't have Rory get back to the person on hold.

I think last night's episode is good... I was relieved that Rory is making the best of the community service; it's more aligned with her character. Not that I think a person can't change, but it's part of Rory's personality to try to make the best of things. I think the dynamic of the show would change for me if she continued to be such a carefree rebel. I like that she is showing a new side of herself, but she's not losing her personality.
As for the phone thing, I thought the writer's put that in intentionally...not sure why I think that, but I do. To emphasize that she and Emily were so wrapped up in the fact that she can spy on people with her new job? I thought it was funny, but not because it was a mistake on the writers' part.

That's a good point. Rory was so conscientious while interning at the newspaper, but that was something she loved and was supposed to help her journalism career. Now that she has no direction, she's caught up in the privileged lifestyle and her Grandmother's society shenanigans.

I missed the first 10 minutes of the episode, but caught most of it.
I don't like how Rory is acting. I'm not sure why, but it bothers me. When she was at the DAR office telling Emily what she found out, it just doesn't seem like Rory. And she and Logan in the poolhouse...she's different. I guess maybe it's her getting used to the rich life. But if she acts like she likes it so much, why the sour look on her face during the DAR induction? Maybe because she knows that's not the person she wants to become.
I love how Lorelai was entertaining the construction crew. It's just another way she's trying to keep her mind off Rory. And Paul Anka is too cute.
And Michel humming the wicked witch of the west song from The Wizard of Oz...hilarious!
And yeah, I think the episodes are a little slower/not as witty because there isn't that interaction between Lorelai and Rory and Lorelai and Emily. That's where all the funny, crazy references come from that make the show what it is. I think we'll have them back soon.
Can't wait til next week when Lorelai and Rory meet and have to pretend to be somewhat nice to each other.
And I don't like the new haircuts. There's something about everyone's new bangs that bugs me.

Yes, she looked pretty out-of-place there. The severe hairstyle and suit made her look like she was trying to hard or something. She really has a young face.

I really want Rory to end up with Dean! I was watching an episode last week from shortly after Rory started Yale. Lorelai turned to Luke when she was upset (and he was so good to her and now they're engaged) and Rory turned to Dean when she was upset (and he treated her like Luke treated Lorelai, so I think they should be together!). A girl can dream!

Rory's character just doesn't ring true to me this season. When she was on campus at Yale, I thought for sure she would realize what a huge mistake she was making and sign up for classes - nope.
And Lane. Do you think that the writers forget about her, then its' like, Oh, we need Lane in an episode?

I was getting all confused too until they said that 2 months had passed since the first episode.
Did I miss something or have they not mentioned Sookie's other child? I thought she was about the give birth at the end of last season and the first episode, they said nothing. I would have forgotten she was pregnant again last season if it wasn't for the baptism scenes from next week.
I agree this season is a little off. The decisions Rory has made just aren't her. Can't wait for the grandparents find out that she's been "entertaining" Logan in the pool house. Logan may be supposed to be 15 years younger than me, but he is very, very cute....

Sookie had a daughter near the end of last season. It was the episode where Lorelai thought she might be pregnant.

Hey ladies. I'm a newbie and a huge GG fan. I stumbled accidentally onto the show about 2 years ago during Christmas break while I was channel surfing. But I've seen every episode thanks to reruns and netflix. I think the season is off to an okay start. I like that Rory and Lorelai are not getting along right now because it makes them seem more normal but according to most things I have read, it will only last about half the season. So, I'm thinking maybe Rory will start back to Yale during the Spring semester. Palladino, the director, has always stated that they want the show to end with Rory's college graduation.
Since I'm late in joining, I'll weigh in on a few things that have been mentioned. I like Logan and Rory together but I don't think I like him for Rory forever. I think he's a fun and exciting relationship for Rory which she hasn't had to this point. Dean was pretty much perfect, but boring and Jess treated her like crap because he had too many issues of his own.
Anyway, my predictions for the show this season are as follows: no wedding between Luke and Lorelai because I think something will happen to temporarily break them up again (Christopher?? or the idea of selling the Inn from last season and traveling). I figure they'll drag it out and get married the next season. I think Rory will go back to Yale possibly with a different career goal in the Spring and I think there will be some big problem with Rory and Logan to end the season. I also think Kirk and Lulu will get married. Can you imagine Kirk as a father? :p Anyway, those are my predictions for now. Anyone else?

I can't stand Rory so far this season, either. :( She is acting like such a pampered little prissy bitch. I truly, truly hope that being on campus at the end of the episode helped her realize what she'd be missing out on and will change her mind about school. It isn't too late if she'll stop being such a baby about a little criticism. And having sleepovers with her boyfriend in her grandparents guesthouse? She wouldn't act like that if she was living at home. Not that I care if they have sex, of course, but she would never act that way under her mom's roof.
I loved all the stuff with Lorelai and Paul Anka and the construction workers. I'm sad for Lorelai that she's so lonely without Rory in her life, though. :(

I'm a huge fan (so is DH, but he'll deny it!) and have been watching since season 1!
I'm with you guys. There's something about the new Rory that I don't like either. Its funny, last season I was rooting for her and Logan to get together, but now... I miss Dean!
I can't wait til tonight's episode. We will finally learn the name of Sookie's daughter! Remember how they kept battling with names at the end of last season. I wonder what they picked...
Can someone refresh my memory. What happened to Dean? I know that he got married and that he and Rory did the deed, but what happened to him since? Is he still in Stars Hollow? Is he still with his wife? Can't remember... but I bet we'll see him again :)

Dean left Lindsey in season 5, or maybe it was she who left him after finding the note Rory sent him - which talked about their night together at the end of season 4. Soon thereafter, Rory and Dean got back together. However, Dean left Rory the night of the party her grandparents threw for "Yale Alumni" - which was really a "Find Rory a Suitable Young Man" party. He saw her all dolled up wearing a tiara and diamonds (Emily's) partying with Logan and his friends and told her it wasn't working. He seems pretty bitter about it given the comments he made to Luke near the end of last season - telling him that Lorelai, like Rory, is "more than Stars Hollow" and he'll never be enough for Lorelai.
ETA: I doubt we'll see anymore of Dean given his potrayer now has his own show on the WB.

Okay, I loved the videotapes at the beginning and how they tied them back in at the end. It's so Lorelai keeping all the old shows and movies and not wanting to get rid of them. And I like how every episode has some way that Lorelai realizes how much she really misses Rory.
I've noticed that it's like there are two Rorys. There's the rich, snobby Rory that we saw at the party. She was playing the snooty hostess and pitched a fit for someone to make coffee. When has Rory ever demanded that someone make her coffee??? Any other time, she'd have done it herself. Then there's the normal Rory we all love. She went back to Stars Hollow and was the normal Rory. Not the spoiled rotten Rory.
Oh, and the maid coming to get her summer clothes...do people really do that??? I don't have anywhere to 'store' clothes that are off season. (Aside from the fact that in Texas we have two seasons...summer and a cooler time that's not summer or winter)
I loved how the scenes were identical when Lorelai and Rory were waking up and getting ready for the baptism. Shows how much alike they truly are.
I also like that Lane was the wise one. Her advice about them being so close and hardly ever fighting before, that there had to be a big fight sometime...she's wise beyond her years! I guess that comes from dealing with a mom like Mrs. Kim.
BTW...Love the "Mary is my homegirl" t-shirt. So Lorelai!

I can't believe they referenced the - sister on the bus- movie! My DH and I would laugh every time we saw a commerical for that movie-- and Dan would do a great Rosie O'Donnell impersonation. Hee.
Anyways...Logan TOTALLY bothered me this week. I thought it was just RUDE of him to invite his friends over to Rory's place without even asking. Even if he was moping.
I am so glad that Lane is back! Maybe she can talk some sense into our Rory :)

The word of the day is "snarcastic." Try to use it as often as possible. ;)
When Lorelei was going through the tapes, I think she had a really good point about the original commercials. Who wouldn't want to see classic 80s ads?
I thought the waking up scenes were funny. Especially that Lorelei wore the orange dress. Makes me wonder if Logan picked the purple dress. Speaking of Logan, he's just ticking me off. So, he has to go make money and become a respectable citizen. Well, cry me a river. I'd prefer not working and being rich myself but that's not the real world. It gives him no right to be rude, especially to Rory- his girlfriend.
And, wow, Martha's name. I think she has more middle names than most European nobility.
Is it wrong that I want a "Mary is my homegirl" shirt?

I think poor Martha got saddled with every first and middle name Jackson had planned for their three dozen kids he thought they were going to have before his little snip snip. Poor guy.

Jackson's brother was absolutely disgusting, and I so wish Luke had been around to see his behavior.
Loved Lane's diagnosis of L & R's relationship, and thought she hit it spot on. And speaking of Lane, why was she not at the baptism? I mean Kirk was there, so why not Lane? And did they have the baptism on a weekday? Considering that they're usually done on a weekend, it sort of threw me to see that Logan was in class when Rory called him. I know it's T.V., but GG's timelines are really inconsistant.
Logan bugged me last night as well, and couldn't believe that he just took the liberty to invite his friends over without asking Rory. I also didn't like that whole milkmaid storyline. Was there a point to it?
When has Rory ever demanded that someone make her coffee???
See I saw this more as Rory's breaking point (starting with the diminishing salmon puffs) of wanting to do a good job of hosting the event for her grandmother, rather than Rory being snooty.

I completely agree. Rory has always wanted to do well at everything she does. I think this was a typical Rory behavior in this very strange situation. Plus she is young and got overwhelmed with the responsibility of leading that snooty party.
Considering that they're usually done on a weekend, it sort of threw me to see that Logan was in class
I just assumed that he had a Saturday class. Rare, but still possible.
I also didn't like that whole milkmaid storyline. Was there a point to it?
I saw this as leading up to Rory's eventually disgust with this whole group. Sure it is fun and shiny now, but will she be able to take their callousness and cruelty for much longer? I think the milkmaid (if they keep the character for a few more episodes), might push her over the edge.
And for everyone's general shopping pleasure: t-shirts! (http://www.asos.com/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=9514)

That's possible, and will be interesting if your theory proves true. Rory having a big blowout with Logan over his friends would be something to see.

I liked this episode, but the whole Jackson-baptism thing really bugged me. He and Sookie were just talking earlier in the episode about how they don't really believe in the teachings of the Christian church, and then he supposedly just goes and gets baptised because his mom wants him to? That's ridiculous. Baptism is a big deal, not something that should be treated like a joke. It was bad enough that Lorelei and Rory stood up in the church and "promised" things they don't really mean -- How could they see to the spiritual upbringing (according to the church's ideals) of those children when they don't have any interest in actually knowing anything about Christianity?
I'm not trying to start a religious debate in an otherwise lighthearted forum -- I just didn't like how they made a joke out of something that many people take very, very seriously.
