QDD: I've said this before, but Papi is such a gorgeous Lab! You also take great pictures of him. Any dog photo advice? My pics don't turn out near as great as yours.

Thanks Foley! My biggest "secret" to taking doggie pictures is to have LOTS of treats in the pocket! :p :D It gets them looking at the camera for sure!

Just thought I'd pop in and drop off a new picture of Duchess. :D She's now 2.5 years old and still as spoiled as ever.

These were taken at the small beach in our neighborhood:

Hey! Oh yeah, Duchess LOVES to swim. In edition to living at the beach, we also have a pool and can't keep her out of it...lol.

How exciting about the new litter. I keep wanting to get Duchess a little sister but Rob wants to wait until we are a little more settled.

Queen & ManteoChik: What beautiful photos! And how exciting that you'll be getting a new puppy soon, Queen!

Here's one of our boy from this weekend at the beach. He'll be 8 next month and I really can't believe it....look at how gray his chin is getting! Our 20 month old daughter just adores him - she was giggling when I took this because of the sand on his nose. He's so good with her.

hey ladies! Meet my pup, Hank. He's a 2.5 year old chocolate (the one on the left)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j283/jenji11/hankandcooter1.jpg

I just got back from the vet. I know there was some discussion in here a while back on ear infections and he's had the ear infection that just won't go away on and off since February!
Hank loves to swim (in my parents' pool), but we haven't let him much this year because of his ears and when we do we dry his ears afterwards. Basically it started out as bacterial and yeast infections in both ears. he went on otomax and an antifungal (ketoconazole) and flushed his ears twice/week and that eventually cleared up the right ear. the left ear persisted for about 2 months with yeast and finally we had to have him sedated and have his ear scraped out because there was so much gunk compacted in there. Well now (a month after that) his left ear's all better finally, but he's got yeast in his right ear again!
Any experience anyone else cares to share? He's now on the antifungal every MWF for the foreseeable future and benadryl for allergies in the blooming seasons.
The vet mentioned it could be a food allergy. I just feel like we've spent SOOO much money on this with constant visits for the last few months and still no answers. I REALLY don't want to go to a prescription food but if that'll "fix" it, I'd do it. any input is welcome

Oh, I'm glad to see this thread bumped back up! Love all the pics!

Mateo- Duchess looks so cute waiting for the throw!

Queen-Look at all of those yellow babies! How sweet! Congrats on your new family member!

Diane-Oh, I LOVE the sand-covered nose! How cute! It's great to know that your labby is good with your baby girl. I am due in Sept. and I am afraid it is going to rock my little spoiled rotten baby-dog's world!

jen-You have a fine looking puppy-dog there! Sorry I can't help on the ear issues. We haven't had that.

I need to take some new pics of Katie when she's not sleeping. We do fun stuff, but never seem to have the camera on us. My 15 year old brother stayed with us for 2 weeks a few weeks ago and Katie had a ball! He took her down to our creek about every day (it's a steep walk and I can't do it anymore as preggo as I am). She LOVES to swim! On one trip, she apparently hurt her tail. I thought she broke it, but it's fine now, so I guess it was just a sprain. She is currently doing her best to unstuff the stuffed squirrel that she adores. I have white stuffing all over my house and don't have the energy to pick it all up. I tried to throw the thing away twice now, and she has retrieved it out of the trash both times. Oh well!

That's a cute photo!

I have a chocolate lab too who occasionally gets ear infections and he also has allergies in general. For my dog, having the vet clean out his ears and then giving him otamax did the trick. I lucked out that my dogs allergies don't seem to relate to food.

I would definitely continue to keep him away from pools or lakes. My lab for some reason doesn't like to swim. If he were into swimming, I wonder if his ear problems would be even worse.

Allergies are a very common cause of ear infections. To do a food trial to see if it the food is when you feed your dog some type of food they haven't eaten before i.e. duck or venison. No treats at all. You try it for about 3 months to see if they get better or not. I cook food for my dog because I think it was the preservatives he was allergic too. It is a bit of work, but it isn't any more expensive and he loves his potatoes and tuna or venison. My dog has numerous allergies but got worse at around 6. I give him allergy shots and since he started on them no skin or ear infections. Yeah!

OMG....how cute!!

So I've got a question for you QueenDillyDally. How did Papi react to the new puppy? We've been talking for some time about getting a new puppy but Duchess has been our "baby" since we got her. She sleeps in bed with us and on the couch, eats snack, goes for car rides. I know she can still do all those with a new puppy but just wondering how the relationship is. She LOVES people, kids, and other dogs so I don't think it will be a problem.

Thanks ManteoChik!

When Papi first met Wally, he looked at us like "what is this thing?". But, he warmed up pretty quickly (albeit, he may still be a tiny bit jealous). Within 24 hours Papi was playing really well with him. We just had to be really careful because Papi doesn't realize how big and clumbsy he can be, so he would run over Wally by accident.

As far as car rides go, we haven't taken them both at the same time yet (aside from last Saturday when we had to pick Papi up at day care with Wally who we had just brought home from the breeders).

As far as the couch goes, Wally has been allowed on the couch from the very beginning as Papi is allowed on it too. (Papi was never allowed on the couch until he was about 10 months old... we tried to keep him off but failed) We have a love seat and a big couch. Papi usually sleeps on the love seat by himself anyways. When Wally falls asleep on the couch with us, we put him in his crate so he gets used to it.

The one great thing about having two is that they can entertain each other and tire each other out. I'm loving that part!

Papi is still our big baby boy, so having another hasn't changed that. I have much more appreciation for Papi now with a puppy in the house. It is surprising how fast we forget about what it is like to have a puppy. Papi has grown up to be such a well behaved loveable lab. We are fortunate for that. Oh, and I thought Papi was going to try and eat Wally's food, but he is really good about that. He stays away from Wally's food dish until Wally is done and then he goes to inspect it to make sure there isn't anything left. :p Wally is all over Papi's food though. He is a hungry monster! After he eats, he will go over to Papi's dish and check out the reminents. They are cute. Neither one of them is aggressive around food thank goodness!

They say not to get a 2nd dog of the same sex as the first. At first we wanted a female but couldn't resist getting a male because they are really handsome. We knew that Papi was submissive and not aggressive, so we took the chance at getting another male. It has worked out fine.

How old is Duchess?
Does she have any aggression issues? (most labbies don't but some have problems with that)
I'm sure she would LOVE to have a puppy to share her life with, especailly if she is really friendly with others!

That is the great thing about labs. They normally do really well with siblings. They are just the most loving companions!

Anyways, long story short, it has worked out well so far! Good luck with your decision. It took us a whole year to decide and when we did, we wanted to make sure Papi was about 2 years old. Old enough to "know better" and stay out of trouble. ;)

Manteo Chick--Double the love, double the trouble! :D We have a 2+ year old yellow and an 18 month old chocolate, both males. They LOVE each other. We have to work through a little bullying on occasion--the yellow is bossy sometimes. But all in all, they're the best of friends and have a hard time being separated. We wouldn't do it any other way--2 is the way to go!

Thanks for all the advice. Duchess is going to be 3 in November and it will probably be quite a while before we get another one. Duchess doesn't have an agressive bone in her body - in fact thats one big thing that most of our friends with babies and small children comment on when they come over. You can feed Duchess treats out of your own mouth and she waggs her tails and thinks its the greatest thing on earth..lol.

It we get another one, it will be another girl and we'll go with the same breeder where we got Duchess. We got so lucky with her because she was a dream dog - never had to be crated, never ate a thing (totally unlike any lab I've ever had..lol), and just overall never had any problems with her. We've been living with SO's aunt/uncle for the past 8 months after we moved back to our hometown and so Duchess has had a constant companion with their almost 4 year old lab (boy) and 13 year old lab (girl) and LOVES every minute of it. We know she'd do great with another dog since she is now, but their dogs weren't puppies.

Wow, labs just are so great with kids! I don't have kids, but Parker just LOVES to be around kids whenever he can! He loves my nieces and my friends' kids!

My sister let me know about this doggy festival going on called Woofstock (http://www.lindenhillswoofstock.net/)! I signed Parker up for the parade part! I guess my sister's family is dog sitting their neighbor's dog, so she's hoping to be able to bring Callie (the dog) as well, but she was so excited to hear that I signed Parker up! She said she's going even if she doesn't bring Callie. (She wants to ask Callie's dad if it's okay first!) I am excited to have a day with Parker, my sister, probably my BIL, my nieces, and a bunch of other doggies! I told another friend of mine who has two dogs and kids. She might show up as well.

So, Parker will be in a parade! How fun! I can't say I've ever seen a dog parade! :)

I think the last big event I took Parker to was an anti-war protest. (That shouldn't surprise anyone!)

Hoo... haven't seen this thread in awhile! :)

Zeppelin is still doing well. He's not a fan of our toddler. I'll be honest about that; I don't think it's his "thing." He likes to keep his distance from her, and thankfully she gets that he doesn't want to play, so she leaves him alone.

We also ended up getting another dog (can't remember if I posted that here). We got an Australian Sheppard Mix from the pound. Initially Zeppelin was wary of him (ziggy) but now they are friends. However, Ziggy is quite the instigator and will chomp on Zepp's back legs when Ziggy wants attention.

Yeah, it's quite a zoo in our house :)

Ironically enough, this afternoon on a walk someone asked me what type of dog she was. When I told them she was a lab, they seemed surprised....mostly because around here labs are usually mixed so they tend to have more of an "american field lab" look instead of english labs like Duchess.

Duchess is beautiful! I love her! She & my Papi would have had gorgeous babies together. Too bad Papi is fixed now. I love her kind eyes and big head. She looks like such a loveable girl.
So true about people coming up to us too and asking what kind of dog Papi (and Wally) are. Most people here are used to seeing the field labs too.
