Our son's christening is set for 10/23. We rented a hall for a post-church reception. DH and I live 2 hours north of my family and 2 hours south of his. We invited everyone, but since it's a Sunday afternoon assumed most wouldn't make it.

Well, the RSVPs are rolling in and it looks like A LOT of people are coming. Therefore this is turning into a major shin-dig and I am in full blown Martha Stewart planning mode. I hadn't planned on having a caterer. The place has two kitchens that I can use to reheat food. The problem is that we'll be at the church too so hopefully I can recruit someone to take on the food responsibilities. The hall is 3 miles from the church and my house is in the middle. Here are my questions. Feel free to answer any or all of them.

There are a lot of small children (under 5) coming so I plan to set up a table with arts/crafts and games for them and need ideas.
Since it is so close to Halloween I would like to do a fall-type theme. Is this OK or do you think it needs to stay religious?
Any ideas, websites or photos for fall-themed decor, crafts for the kids, food etc.?

Congrats.

For the kids I would make mac and cheese, chicken fingers and hot dogs in a blanket. As for games I would go to a party store and get some cheap favors/toys and do things like musical chairs, maybe get some clay or play doh and let them mold to their hearts content.

Decorations - I don't think I would deviate on the decorations. I would keep it fairly religious looking. Call me boring

WHat types of food were you looking to serve? I will search around and try to find some pics to post if you give me an idea.

Hi Jodi, I don't know what your particular denomination, I'm greek orthodox (yeah they can be on the strict side), but I did a lot of youth group volunteer work and I know our priests stressed putting the emphasis on harvest and fall rather than "halloween, witches and goblins" with the youth dances and community bulliten boards and such, so perhaps you might check with your minister and see if there is a paticular aversion to something.

Good luck! Sounds like it will be quite a bash!
