The house we're getting has that fake tile board all the way around it. I'm scared of what's behind it. Anyone delt with this? What did it entail to make it updated?

You could paint over it.
If you yank that down, you might have a problem. Plus, like you said, who knows what's behind it?

we have fake wood paneling on one wall in our living room. We painted over it, we weren't ready to deal with what might be behind it.
If you take it down and the wall is in bad shape you could always cover it with wainscotting. My sister did that in her bathroom - the wainscotting goes about 2/3 of the way up the wall and then above it is just regular wall. It looks fabulous.

We have plastic wallboard in our bathroom (shudders). We're not planning on doing anything to it until we're ready to tear out the BR and start over.
As a temporary solution, I went to Menards/Home Depot to find out what we could do to paint it. They had a primer they recommended, although I can't remember what it was. But they said it would work to bond a latex paint to the wallboard.

Kitty- I understand! We are redoing a bathroom this weekend that has fakey platicy board as walls. It is hideous! But we're painting over it just fine using normal primer and semi-gloss paint. Here's two photos:
Here's the paneling (it has gold speckles in it!):

I'm talking about the stuff that looks like wainscotting but instead of grooves it has squares. Anyway my dad told me we just needed to gut the room and start over so problem sorta solved.
