QOTD - I haven't been too bad. I've stuck to pasteurized/made in America blue and brie. I had one hot dog very early on while camping. And, I've eaten deli turkey a few times as well as tuna. Oh, and plenty of bacon. mmmm, I love bacon! I just can't get freaked out about listeria. DH and I looked it up and basically, the odds are greater that I'll get hit by a car than infect my baby with listeria. I don't know if sushi is a listeria carrier, but I am staying away from that - except for the california rolls. I don't love it in real life, but do find myself craving it now, of course.

Standrea - I LOVE that coat!

Akachan - good luck with the blood draw. I can't look until I have the bandaid and cotton ball. Otherwise, I will pass out if I even see where the needle went in.

Last night must've been the night for baby dreams (and other dreams Guinness, lol). I dreamt that I felt the baby move. There was more, but now I can't recall...

We see DH's family this weekend to tell them the news. But, it is still two weeks before we see/tell my parents. I am afraid my belly will give it away before I even open my mouth. I bought a pair of too big pants at 6 weeks in preparation and yesterday they were tight already. My patagonia that I wear to walk the dog is already snug when I zip it up and I can see a bulge when I wear even my loose sweaters.

So, I have QOTD: Does anyone know when we'll likely "pop" - ie, look pregnant as opposed to fat and squishy?

QOTD/Food - I'm bad. I don't think I've followed the list for either pg.

QOTD/Maternity Shirts - I started wearing them when I started wearing maternity pants - I needed to cover the demi-panel.

I have no clue, but that made me laugh. I don't like feeling squishy!

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one that hasn't been eating veggies and exercising like she should.

ETA: I'm drink a soda right now. It is heaven!! mmm...caffiene.

About sushi - it's one of our favorites too and I don't want to dreprive DH of it (although wouldn't that be a nice gesture of him), but remember - we can eat it if it's cooked. So I stick with California rolls, eel, spider rolls (soft shell crab), anything tempura (although the fried aspect may not be the healthiest!!). I'm curious though - does anyone know if fish eggs are ok? Sometimes they use them as garnish (I think it's called tobika).

I was just thinking - I bought some normal pants (ie. not maternity) to wear until I need to be wearing maternity pants, but do you think I'll grow out of them too fast to make it worthwhile? I haven't taken the tags off and I'm wondering if I should just bring them back. I don't want to keep them if I'll only be able to wear them for the next month or so. I know at some point we'll start to gain very quickly - like a pound a week. I'd rather get my money back and put it towards something stretchy. What do you think?

fatsI was wondering the same thing -
does anyone know if fish eggs are ok? I've seen California rolls topped with these. I've avoided them so far, just to be safe.

fish eggs - I love sushi! I haven't gone lately, more because we are saving $$ though, since there are lots of options that are cooked. But I remember when I was pg with DD the sushi restaurant was happy to leave them out for me (I never checked with the doc but since they are raw I figure they're probably not good).

Valley Fair Ahhh my old highschool haunt! It is so big now! Anyway it is off the Winchester exit from 280 if I recall correctly. So in San Jose, but pretty far north.

Popping - I THINK last time it was around 20 weeks for me. Of course I felt like I looked totally pregnant way before that, but I'm sure I didn't.

I haven't posted in FOREVER!! I have been faithfully following along, but just haven't taken the time to reply - I must get better at that! So, I'm going to try to get caught up and not fall so far behind again..

Telling - We FINALLY told our parent yesterday. They live in different near-by towns and go to different churches. I play in our church's bell choir, so we invited them to come watch our choir play yesterday, then took them out for lunch. At lunch we gave them each a card with a picture of the sonogram and a new charm for their bracelets. My mom cried - she was so happy. I didn't get the same reaction from my MIL. She just starting talking about DH's sister's wedding (which isn't until NEXT SEPTEMBER!), but that's just the way she is. I guess in her own way she is happy for us. So, now we can tell -friends and co-workers. DH told practically everyone yesterday and beat me to work today and told most of our co-worker before I got here! I didn't realize he was so excited. It is good to finally be able to talk about it - it really is stressing to keep it in!

Pets - Our cat is 11 and usually doesn't care where we are or what we are doing as long as her needs are met, but lately I can't seem to shake her. Everytime I sit down, she is on my lap. When I stand up, she rubs against my legs. And she follows me from room to room. I thought she was nuts until reading your posts. Our dog, who is a 5 year old shitz-zu (sp?) mix, has always suffered from separation anxiety.

Maternity Clothes - I have bought some pants in the next 2 sizes bigger from Name Brand Clothing (NBC), so I got them for next to nothing. And they are working in the interem. But, I stopped by Old Navy and tried on some maternity jeans (with the demi-panel). They were the most comfortable things I have ever put on. I don't know why we don't wear those things all the time! I bought them. It might be a little soon, but the comfort is worth it! I tried on the ones with the "real waist" but am not yet big enough for them to fit right. I haven't bought any maternity tops yet. I've been buying longer tops to cover the demi-panel, elastic backs, and rubber-bands. So far, I just look like I am putting on a few pounds. I'm anxious to start looking like I'm pregnant.

Akachan93 - Wow! How great is it that you got to find out already! I have to say that I am jealous :( It is killing me not knowing. I can't wait until next month. We've already discussed it, and if the baby isn't in a good position, when we go to find out, we're paying for another u/s ourselves - I must know!

Standrea - That is a great coat! In all my maternity browsing, it didn't dawn on me that I am going to need a new coat. Thanks for the reminder.

QOTD - My lapses in food control aren't too bad yet...I forgot about hot dogs and ate one at the pumpkin patch a few weeks ago, but it was cooked black, mmmm. I have been having one Spark a day, and since it has 120 mg of caffeine in it, I don't have any other caffeine. My Dr said I can have up to 300 mg a day, but I have been holding off for those really bad days. Other than that, probably too much junk and not enough fruits and veggies - though I really try.

Sorry for the long post, I'll try not to get so behind again. Sorry also to all the posts and QOTD's I didn't get to respond to.

Oh, and my next appointment is Nov 18, and my new EDD is May 19 (my youngest sister's b-day).

Hello ladies! Just got home from my doctor's appointment and got a flu shot, so my left arm is feeling sore. I stopped by Old Navy and bought some "hidden panel" low-ride khaki pants suitable for work, as I can't wear any of my pants anymore, even when trying to use my Bella Band because I've now gained TEN pounds! I know, scary, but I was really hungry all the time and it's only been this last week that I haven't been hungry every couple of hours. I'm hoping the weight gain will slow down considerably from this point on. My doctor took a wait-and-see attitude, so she's not particularly worried but she didn't look "happy" either.

I go in for my AFP test in 2 weeks but other than that, I'm not planning any other tests.

Hope you're all surviving first trimester!

We went this afternoon for the ultrasound part of the first trimester screen. The baby was stubborn (just like mom, dad and sister) and wouldn't get into the position they needed it to be in. I am surprised that my stomach is not bruised from the u/s tech shoving the darn thing into my belly to move the baby. We got some great pics, which I will scan in and upload at some point...I promise!

After that, we went to the genetics person, and according to the results, before my bloodwork the chances of Down's Syndrome was 1 in 600something. After the bloodwork...1 in over 6500. Huge weight off my shoulders! They also tested for trisomy 18 (I think that's what it's called) and my chances are the lowest they give out. It was like 1 in 20000 or something. I don't remember and we didn't get a copy of the numbers.

I finally go for my first check-up with the ob on Thursday night. My friend's going to come with me so that I don't have to go alone. I hate driving at night, and Ray has to work.

So, I'm getting really curious about water birthing...I have a close friend/former co-worker who is about 3 weeks ahead of me. She is very much a natural foods/organic/vegetarian/natural childbirth sort of gal. Anyway, I had lunch w/her last week and we discussed how she plans a water birth at our local hospital - same hospital where I will be delivering.

Have any of you repeat offenders done a water birth? What do you know about it? And now for the possibly dumb question...If you have a water birth does it have to be natural? Do you know of any websites or books where I can research it more?

At this point I just want to learn more about it...I'm not even considering it as a serious option at this point, but I would love to get more information.

I agree with EM7.21.04! I have heard alot about it, but would love more info on it!!

I think I am going to call my OBGYN and see if she can refer me to a nutritionist today. I do not eat meat, and I hardly eat at all right now. Even last night, DH had to force me to have dinner. I know its not good for the baby, but I dont know what to do. That's why we think it will be best if i see a nutritionist, and talk about my options. I want this to be the healthiest pregnancy it can!

I realized that I'm really really bad at shout outs! I'm so sorry!! I'm on my way out to work right now, but I will be back tonight, and try to get some done!!

Thanks for everyones comments about the coat. I loved it!! We are in Northern New York, and have already had snow...and its freezing already. My regular coats still fit now, but in a few months, im sure I will not be able to button them!!:)

Well over the last day or so I have learned a lot about what we shouldn't be eating. I guess I wasn't as good as I thought - oops. I am a sushi lover too, but it hasn't sounded great, plus I am in a small town in Texas so it is hard to find good sushi.

Slept well last night - no crazy dreams ;) Today is a slower day at work - yay!! I just feel so unmotivated there lately. It is hard to keep my mind on work.

Hope everyone has a good day. Maybe we can get the new thread started this weekend? Everyone will be at (or really close to) 12 weeks. Any volunteers want to help moderate the next thread? PM me or Kristin if you are interested, it is pretty easy. I figure with all the ultrasounds and gender findings in the next couple months + the holidays, things will be busy :D

Em-I didn't have a water birth. Did you mean could you have an epidural and have a water birth? I wouldn't think so b/c they want you to stay in bed if you get an epdiural although they do have walking epidural but I'm not familar with those. I bet if you posted in parenting some ladies might have more info.

Em I am fairly sure that if you want a water birth, it has to be natural. Once I got my epidural with Nora, I was bedridden. With an epidural, they hook you up to the machine and keep the needle in your back until you're finished, so you can really be submersed in water.

But there are other narcotic options for pain management, but I was wary to try any of those because they can cause the baby to be groggy and can slow nursing at the beginning.

But I could be wrong!

ETA: I finally told my boss and co-workers yesterday, there was just no hiding it any further. Between wearing baggy clothes and going off WW and eating like a pig, it was getting obvious. I feel so liberated to have 'come out'!

Em7.31.04-I'm seriously considering a water birth. The only problem is that there is only one hospital on LI that offers a water delivery! I think that is absolutely ludicrous but what are you going to do. This means that I would have to travel quite a distance to a hospital that is rather busy and, I believe, not in the greatest area in order to give birth in water. I wouldn't be able to use our smaller, local hospital that I am extremely comfortable with. MY OB doesn't routinely do them (though he has done them before) but he does have rights at the "water birth" hospital and offered to deliver this one in water for me. I don't know. I may just stick to laboring in water (in the shower in my hospital room) and then giving birth on "dry land" like I did last time. ;) We'll see.

Oh, and I know one of the criteria he has for a waterbirth is that the L&D be med-free. I know that definitely holds true for an epidural, but I'm not sure about any other forms of pain relief.

Kim -Wow that is too bad that the hospital which does water births is so far! I didn't even get in the water with DD - since I was induced a month early, they had me hooked up to all kinds of junk and although it was "allowed" it was just way too much hassle. But hopefully with this one I'll get to! (Not a water birth - I want an epidural - but labor in the water).

Standrea - That's a great idea to see a nutritionist! Just remember, your baby takes what it needs from you even if you eat badly...and MOST of us eat pretty poorly during the first trimester! So don't worry about it too much. But I'm sure you can get some great ideas for ways to eat healthy, especially once you are feeling better.

jarm - Hooray for the great screening!!

I'm having a heckofa time getting the hospital to call me to schedule my NT. My OB was great, referred me for it and all that, but the hospital won't call! I called them and they said their computers have been down - which I understand, but the clock is ticking! Oh well, if I end up just doing the AFP that will be ok too.

I have a question about the epidural - if you've got this needle in your back the whole time, then how are you laying on your back to deliver? Wouldn't that be really uncomfortable.

QOTD: Is anyone planning to use a doula for delivery? I have a friend who did and said it was a great decision, but part of me feels like I should be able to do this with just my husband in the room with me - do I really want another person in there?

Guinness
11-08-2005, 09:01 AM
Fats For the epidural is there really a needle in your back the whole time? My understanding is that they put the medicine in through the needle in your back and then remove it - that is why it may wear off or be too strong depending on time of adminstration and how far you are along. If it is in the whole time, I definitely will be rethinking wanting an epidural

QOTD Right now I am just planning on my husband in the room. I might change my mind after our birthing classes. My main issue is I know my mom wants to be in there, but I also know that with her personality DH will end up in the corner or in the hall. She is just very take charge and he is not. I am trying to prevent that interaction from happening while I am in pain.

Bloomwood is joining the moderation team for 2nd trimester too. I probably will help get it set up and then step aside for the 2nd trimester. Thanks Bloomwood!!

I have a question about the epidural - if you've got this needle in your back the whole time, then how are you laying on your back to deliver? Wouldn't that be really uncomfortable.

The needle is very small and flexible. Actually it isn't even a needle - it is probably more correctly called a catheter. It is fully taped down over your back where it is inserted and you truly cannot feel it.

After I got it - I honestly don't think that I thought about it once.

It isn't as bad as it sounds - honestly!

Bloomwood

QOTD - I am sticking just with my OB and husband. My friend that referred me to my ob said she is very good about making you feel comfortable during delivery. She is very "earth mothery" and I know she'll help me make the right decisions about drugs, etc., so I am comfortable with having a "traditional" birth. There is no way there will be any parent in that room! Thankfully I don't think my mom or MIL would even think that could be an option!!

shortcake
11-08-2005, 09:17 AM
epidural - I THINK the needle is used to insert the tube. The needle is then removed (I think) and the tube is taped flat to your back, and that is why you can lie on it. They definitely do keep it in the whole time - I think sometimes if your labor is long the medicine they are dripping into you can run out and that is why sometimes it wears off. They control how fast it drips into you, which is why sometimes it is too strong, etc. I know that after DD was born they immediately "turned it off" however they do that. Though I can't remember them removing anything from my back! But they must have. Unless I'm crazy!!

QOTD - I am just going to have my husband in the room during delivery. However, I'd have a Doula if I could - especially if I wanted natural childbirth! My friend made it through 30 hours of pitocin induced labor w/o drugs (ended up with a c/s unfortunately) and a lot of that she attributes to her doula's help. If you're on the fence, you might interview a couple and talk to them about it, and see what you think. I did have a couple very close friends in the room during labor, which was a very good distraction actually. I don't think I'd want my mom, though - I turn into a big baby around her so it would just make it worse I think! But my mom doesn't want to be there (she is used to it being just the husband) so it's not an issue for us. (She's out of state anyway!)

This is what I'm afraid of. I know my mom wants to be in the room, but I'd really like it to be just DH and I. I haven't broken the news to her yet. I'm kinda nervous about what her reaction will be.

QOTD-No doula for me. I think the idea of having a doula is lovely, but when I'm in labor I become very introverted and withdrawn. I like peace and quiet and my space for the most part, and don't want to be disturbed by anybody (just ask my husband who was chewing a Jolly Rancher just a little too loudly the last time I was in labor). ;)

Ok, that makes more sense about the epidural. Thanks.

I can't imagine having my mother in there, but it's funny because I don't think she would even dream of that being an option. My mom has already said she wants to be here for the birth (she's out of state) but I know that just means "here in NY" not "here in the delivery room"!!

Having a doula for natural childbirth makes sense, but I'm positive I want drugs, so I wonder if it's still as helpful.

Here's another (somewhat) related QOTD: Do you know that your OB will be delivering your baby? I know it sounds like a silly question, but my OB is in a practice with 4 or 5 other doctors and basically, you get whoever is on call when your time comes.

I plan on only having DH in the room with me. That's how it was last time and it was great. We had a great nurse and my fav. Dr. so we all basically just hung out-lucky for me they didn't have to many other babies being born.

o you know that your OB will be delivering your baby My Dr. is in practice with two other Dr.'s. I like the other two but Dr. D is my favorite by far. Last time I got lucky and he was on call when my water broke. I was so excited when he called me back. More than likely I will have him again b/c him and I have talked about induction and I will make sure I am seen by him the last few weeks of my pregnancy. Here they make you see everyone in the office since any one of them could deliver your baby.

QOTD: Do you know that your OB will be delivering your baby?My OB has his own practice. He did share a practice with an older OB whom he has since split from (I think the older OB was cutting back in deliveries and my OB took over his practice). Amazingly my OB claims he has not missed a birth in 2 years. Right before my EDD with DD#2 I was panicked that he would not be there to deliver and the older OB would (whom I was not a fan of). He assured me that unless he was at his daughter's wedding (which was the week before my EDD) or at his own funeral he would be there, and he was. He said even if the other OB was on call to have the office page him and he would be there himself. I'm praying that he'll be there for #3 as well. If there was some kind of emergency that came up and he couldn't be there for some reason, he has doctors that cover for him. I'm hoping that we won't need to worry about that though.

Q re: who to have in the room With Nora, I had both of my parents. There was a bit of miscommunication - they didn't realize that I was in a labor-delivery-recovery room and things moved along very quickly. They kept thinking I was going to be carted off to a delivery room. My dad cowered in the corner, whimpering, my mom watched.

Frankly, I was so into the act of delivering the baby that the entire University of Colorado football team could have been in the room and I wouldn't have cared.

This time, however, my folks will be home with Nora and it will just be me and DH. And the doctor. And various nurses, I'm sure. And maybe an anesthesiologist.

Daycare PSA I know at least one of you have submitted your daycare application. I did mine today. My daycare has a 9 month waiting list, and some of the others in the area have wait lists of well over a year. If you live in a big city, you may want to considering lining up daycare now and getting on the list.

With Nora - I waited until I was 18 weeks before getting on the list and she had to go to another daycare FAR away for my first month back at work and it really really stunk. She got off the waitlist, though, and is now in daycare in my office building.

QOTD: Do you know that your OB will be delivering your baby? My OB is in her own practice as well. She said she really enjoys delivering, so she tries her best to make it. If something were to happen, there are doctors at the hospital that would deliver. I'm not psyched on that option, but my OB told me at our last appt that early-May is good timing for her as she won't be picking her kids up from college until late May and she won't go on vacation until later that summer.

QOTD-OB: The practice that I go to has 5 or 6 OBs and you see all of them because whoever is on call is who you'll get. I'm not worried though they are all really nice and four of the five were recently named in the top ten OBGYNs in Detroit.

FYI the OB I saw last time told me that May is the perfect time to have a baby. I just thought it was funny that he had an opinion. Personally, I would have thought December was the perfect time if thats when I was due, but whatever.

QOTD/OB Mine is in a group, so it could be any of them. I will meet them all at some point. I actually picked a group because I know many who are in individual, but have others help with being on call. I wanted to meet all of them.

As for my mom in the room, I am not sure she would have thought of it herself, but she ran into my best friend and her mom soon after I found out I was pregnant (my mom knew, bf/bfmom did not) and right after BF delivered. Anyway, BFmom went on and on about how my mom had to be there if it ever happened to me because it was the most incredible experience - yadda yadda. So now my mom thinks - Shannon wanted her mom there, you should want me. I am trying to convince her the hospital doesn't advocate it, and that she should plan to come after my due date not before (she is in CA, we are in TX) so she actually gets to see the baby. DH is sure I will cave and let her in the room.

QOTD/Delivery Room - I was able to have visitors while in labor (not hard labor...if I had gotten there). DH would have been the only one there. Since I ended up csection, DH was the only family in the room - everyone was able to visit in the recovery approx 45-60 minutes after DD was born. My opinion regarding moms in delivery....not for me.

QOTDs:

Daycare: I find it so crazy that daycares fill up so quickly...I work in one, and we take walk-ins all the time. Granted, we only serve low-income families on state assistance...But still. Sounds like DH & I really need to have some serious conversations ASAP re: what I will be doing after the baby comes. I'm in graduate school and need to decide if I will be postponing my internship for yet another year, so I can work for another year...Yikes. Lots of decisions to make.

Do you think it's better to have your child in daycare closer to your home or closer to where you or DH works?

Doula At this point, I don't plan on having one. I have a midwife rather than an OB, so I expect the process to be less "medical" and more holistic than if I had an OB. My midwife is basically there w/you during labor, so I think she will kind of serve the purpose of a doula. It will be just DH and I in the delivery room, along w/the entire extended team of nurses, midwife, etc...

OB: At the office I go to, there are 5 OBs and 5 midwives. I will rotate through the midwives at appointments later in my pregnancy, so I will get to know each one. That way I'll have at least met the one on call when I go into labor.

That's a good point about knowing the doctors on call! My OB specifically said if there is even a slight chance that he wouldn't be able to attend my delivery (if he were going away or something which is highly unlikely) he would introduce me to the doctor on call for him before hand which I found to be very comforting.

I forgot to say in my last post - I really was completely clueless that the epidural stays in the whole time. Thanks for that info so I can start preparing  Sounds as though those who got them didn't find them uncomfortable (or at least there were enough other distractions). That is good to hear!! I have already been thinking I would like to 'try' natural, but am open to meds if I need them. . . .this info might push me a little further down that natural path :)

Daycare distance I am not sure which is better. My first daycare will be my next door neighbor - so it will be easy to drop off and pick up. The other option I applied for (wouldn't happen until probably 2 yrs) is near my work. That might be fun to pick DC up for lunch sometime or something like that. My DH works 1 1/2 hours away, so that is out of the question.

Hi Ladies!

I got to see Baby M and hear his/her heartbeat today! S/he was acting like a lil mexican jumping bean and wouldnt stay still for the nuchal translucency test. Definitely taking after it's father already.

Last night we had the hospital tour for new parents to be. Pete was impressed on how new everything looked. I was a bit sad cause I was 1 of 2 women there with barely a belly showing.:( Scary was the hospital statistic on C sections- 1 out of every 2 births are C- section

QOTD/OB I have 1 OB. The hospital has about 10 midwives that keep check throughout the laboring process.

Who to have in the room? I'm only allowing Pete in the room. No way my parents will make it over on time and there is no way that his mom will be allowed in the room if I can help it!:p

Daycare I'll be a SAHM.:D

Foods I've been fortunate enough not to have had Morning sickness at all so far. I've been eating basically what ever makes my tummy happy- including lunch meats and coffee every morning.

Hope ya'll have a good hump day!

Morning Everyone!

Yesterday I had a long conversation with my SIL. She was really upset at my father because he fed my 10 month old nephew food on the do not feed list. Apparently the parents (her's included) do this all the time, mine are especially obnoxious about it.

Repeat offenders, did/do you have problems with friends/relatives doing things while taking care of your DC that you did not like or want? How did you handle it?

Em7.31.04/Chicago H&M: I dropped into the State Street H&M yesterday and was told that they no longer sell maternity clothes. She wasn't sure about the one on Michigan Ave, but said the store in Woodfield Mall (Western Suburbs) sold maternity clothes. :(

OB Practice: There are 4 OBs in my doc's practice. Even though I see one primarily, it will depend on who's on call when I deliver. OB says that they all make sure to get to know each other's patients so we feel comfortable during delivery. My ex OB/GYN delivered her own babies, but that was her only advantage.

Delivery: Just DH and the medical staff. We started that way, we'll end that way.:p

Foods: I've had Feta cheese, the occasional soft drink, and a sip of wine every Sunday during church. I'm a strong candidate for GD, yet I cannot stay away from dessert or McDonald's hashbrowns.

Daycare: Fortunately I'll be working part time. The rest of the time DC will be spending with my in-laws.

Goodmorning everyone!

Quick fly by post because there is a bad accident on the highway and i need to get to work...

Is it just me, or does time seem to be FLYING by? Like seriously, i can't believe it's Wednesday already!! Which means I'm almost 12 weeks! Which means I'm almost done wiht my first trimester!! And i'm pretty sure I have the latest due date-so that means we are ALL almost out of the first trimester!!

QOTD-Daycare; I'm 99% sure I am going to be a SAHM...we are just trying to debate if I will get too bored...

QOTD2-Hopefully, it will only be me and DH in the delivery room, with the nurses and doctor. My mother is insistant on being in the room, but DH is NOT going to go for that at all, and quite personally, i dont want it. I just dont know how to break the news...

QOTD3-My doctor said that I am very lucky because there is a 99.9% chance that she will deliver me. There are 2 doctors and 3 midwives in the practice, and all are very nice. But I love my doctor! She helped get me pregnant!! She said the only reason I wouldnt have her is if I go in the first week of May because there is a big national OBGYN conference in Washington DC that she will be attending...

I hope everyone has a great day!!

Hello Everyone-

Sorry I have been MIA. I am still feeling quite yucky. I am SO much sicker this time than I was with my DD :(

QOTD (Daycare)- My DH works nights so he watches our daughter during the day. So, now he will be watching two babies! Just a side note- my DH had never been around babies before our daughter was born. So, when we were discussing whether or not he would be able take care of her he announced to the whole family, "how hard can it be, she will just sleep on a chair all day ." Boy, has he learned that it's a bit more work than he imagined. He is not making any silly statements about how easy it will be this time:p

QOTD (People in Delivery Room)- I had a c/s last time and will be having a repeat this time. So, only DH and me and a bunch of Drs and nurses. I really wanted my MIL to be able to go in with us but it is not allowed at our hospital.

QOTD (Which Dr)- My Dr is the only one in the practice and I am having that repeat c/s so I know it will be him that does it!

Hope everyone is doing great!

Hi All. Wow, I have never heard about soft serve being a no-no! I so have that a lot. Yikes!!! You all will probably think I'm wierd, bcs. with DD I had a homebirth, and like my whole family and BF watched the whole thing. And when I say BF, I mean best friend...not boy friend. My DH wouldn't have gone for that!:D heehee. At that time i couldn't have cared less, and what an amazing experience birth is. Someday I would love to be able to be on their side watching the experience. No regrets. However, this time we live 2 1/2 hrs. away from everyone, so I don't know who will be in the room.
QOTD: Anyone having wierd cravings yet? For me it's bagels and cream cheese.

Guinness
11-09-2005, 06:40 AM
jennydinny mmm bagels and cream cheese. I have craved that for a couple weeks. I bought store stuff and ate it for breakfast. I have decided that it isn't a great breakfast for me as there is no protein, so I am trying to eat protein in the morning and not all carbs and dairy

My other surprise craving (or maybe stereotypical craving) is pickles. I haven't put it with icecream, and luckily that still doesn't sound appetizing.

Have a good Wednesday everyone!! I am always so glad when they are over :)

Wow, I'm really behind, since I went to visit a friend and her adorable twins.

I'll try and catch up some at this point, but no SO's due to time. Glad that things seem to be going well for everyone.

I heard the heartbeat again on Thursday, which is always nice. The doctor also told me to try to go back on the prenatals (yuck) and see how I react this time, he said he's worried about my iron getting low in the upcoming weeks.

Daycare -- I'm a SAHM, so fortunately I don't have to worry too much, but be forwarned, preschools also fill up fast.

Doctors -- I"m in a group practice with 5 doctors and had to see them all last time, fortunately my doctor said I don't have to unless I want to this time. Unfortunately the only doctor I can't stand was on call when my DS was born. I refuse to see her again and now hear poor things about her from anyone that has ever seen her. I'll probably be a repeat c/s, so I get to schedule with my doctor this time :)

More later...

Good morning all!

Daycare: I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a SAHM, at least until all of our kids are in school.

Surprise cravings: Lucky charms. I hate cereal, but lately I can't get enough. Also milk. I've always hated milk, but now I can drink a couple of glasses a day.

kristin9903

Wow, I missed a lot! I had a 12 hour day at the school I teach at and I'm totally wiped out. They totally don't pay me enough.

Thanks to our new mods!!! I can stay on through the second trimester, but will probably give it up in the 3rd, as I'll be starting nursing school, teaching college, and being pregnant all at once.

Daycare We've found someone who does it in her home that's really reasonable. She comes very well recommended from a couple of DH's work friends. She'll also work with us on it being a part time arrangement, since I won't be in school everyday.

Doctors My doc's in a group of 5, I think, so who knows. As long as they don't espouse their love of the Fonz while I'm in labor, I really don't care. DH can catch the kid, really.

People in the room I've invited my stepmother to be in the room with us. She never had kids, and is super excited about this little one, so it just seems fitting. She's also a RN, so I'm sure she'll take good care of me. She lives 3 hours away, so I don't know if she'll make it or not, but I hope she can be there for it.

Cravings Meat. All the time. Especially a really good burger.

***

Nothing new here except last night I couldn't sleep on my stomach anymore as it felt like I was definitely squishing something!

QOTDs:

Do you think it's better to have your child in daycare closer to your home or closer to where you or DH works?

Having Nora in the daycare in my building has been great - they call me when she's hungry and I go down and nurse her - so no pumping and no bottles. Actually I should say I used to go do this, she is now in Toddlers as of this week - so no more day nursing!

Originally she was at a daycare by our house - it was horrible. We dropped her off at 6:30am and picked her up at 5pm.

I feel bad that she has to do the 40 minute commute each way - but at least it is time that I'm getting to spend with her - even if it is in the car. Plus - I get to see her during the day which is wonderful.

And it was great for our nursing relationship.

Bloomwood
11-09-2005, 08:56 AM
Attygirl - I won't be doing daycare (SAHM), but I think that is a great point you make about having to drop the child off so early and pick up so late. I never thought about that. Plus, I would think getting her used to being in the car is a good thing - not to mention the bonding time.

Flyerwife - not sure if you'll have time to check back, but wanted to mention something I think Lolly said before about PNVs - they're much easier on the tummy if you take them at night before bed. Also, I have moved to the Target brand PNVs and they are coated so they don't have that yucky vitamin smell/after-taste. I've been able to take them the whole time.

Kristin - that is so nice you invited your stepmom.

Standrea - I totally think time is flying now. I think that the first tri went so slowly because I was so nervous about something bad happening as well as not being able to tell anyone. Now, I think everyone's enthusiasm and being mostly in the safety zone makes it so much more fun and FAST!

Cravings - I had one day where I had to have Golden Grahams cereal. I ate one bowl, felt gross and now they are in the pantry. The big one that hasn't really gone away is Apples. Fiji and braeburn (?) are especially good. I want to say chocolate, but I think I was only eating it because it was here (Halloween candy). I took it to my office in the city yesterday - hopefully it won't be there next time I go in!

Em7.31.04
11-09-2005, 12:29 PM
Cravings: If I could eat only bread and cheese, all day every day, I would be such a happy girl. I want anything bread-related...bagels, chips, crackers, etc...And any kind of cheese, but preferably Tillamook colby jack in slices. Good thing I wasn't on Atkins before the pg! :p

southlooper - Yep, food issues and just general care of DD...MIL doesn't listen. Totally frustrating!!! She still does it from time to time. She was told that if she didn't follow our rules she wouldn't be allowed to see DD without us there. That put a real quick stop to it. She gives her cookies from time to time when she didn't eat lunch or dinner, but I do that too sometimes.

Hi all,
sneaking in from work...

Em7.31.04 you asked me if I live in San Jose? No, about 30 miles away, but I work here! And one plus is that great mall, Valley Fair!!!

Bloomwood unless I skimmed past your answer already... aren't you Bay Area? Where was this new Gap Maternity you mentioned opening up? I'm desperate!

Shortcake Valley Fair supposedly wasn't that great back in the day, and I've only lived here since 98, but now it's huge and I honestly think the best mall in the entire Bay Area (and I'm counting San Francisco, Marin, Walnut Creek, Palo Alto)!!! Love it. Although mostly I stay away from it for the safety of my wallet!

--QOTDs--

Daycare sign ups and distance: I think it was me who mentioned I already signed up for the waitlist. And we are looking into trying another one too 'cause this one we'll probably never get it's so long! We are looking at places near home, and I work 30 miles away. I don't really know what the right decision is, but I figured we are aiming to have the baby's doctor's near home too, so that was one consideration.

Doula and size of my OB practice We are most definitely, without a doubt, getting one. Am I the only one so far? Well, part of why is because a close friend used one for both her kids and swears by them, and I know her and I know my own fears and anxieties so it just seems like a good idea. (And DH, who also knows my anxieties, was quick to agree despite his normally being WAY more uptight about possibly unnecessary $$!) Although I am actually using a midwife and not an OB as it is, she is still part of a HUGE health care system (Kaiser Permanente) and I think my chances of my midwife delivering my baby is like 1 in 25! So that's another reason I want a doula, some guarantee of continuity. Finally, my midwife specifically told me that although some doulas are natural-only, many are not, and are fine with the woman getting what pain meds she needs. I will be looking for a doula who is cool with that!

Cravings Chocolate milk, like daily! It's weird. It seems to settle my stomach like nothing else. And does the fact that the other day I ordered a burger WITH pastrami on top count for anything? Hey, it's not like *I'm* the one who put it on the darn menu!

Ok--back to work! Hope you are all well!

sneezy - I just drove by! It is on Burlingame Ave (in Burlingame, of course ;)) It looks like it will be open by this weekend or maybe mid-next week. It says BabyGap, but when I've gone by before it advertised that it'd be Maternity as well. I can't wait!

I've heard lots of women crave milk when they're pregnant. chocolate is so yummy!

ETA - Sneezy : there is also a BabyStyle across the street as well as a Janie and Jack and Gymboree. You can do some real damage while you're there!

My current life… While I have been following along, my life has been too hectic of late to post much. My father’s wife passed away on Monday morning. He is in a nursing home in Florida—so I have been trying to figure out next steps –and figuring out how to deal when I am most likely appointed his guardian (I am the only child of a parent with advanced stage Parkinson’s disease)… In addition, my mom’s best friend was diagnosed with cancer, my grandfather went to the hospital for surgery, my boss went on an unexpected trip –and I have been dealing with tons of deliverables at work, and on and on. I really have felt like there has been a big “X” on my forehead marking me for trouble this week…

My pregnancy… There was some good news though—my chromosomal tests following the nuchal were normal, and I am 14 weeks (using the revised due date of the 10th) today. Oh and I bought some maternity clothes …Old Navy for casual was a deal, Gap was…I spent more than I wanted, but I really hate shopping and did not want to keep looking. My tummy is sticking out a bit –and my BBs have grown again!

Daycare sign ups and distance: We have not focused on day care yet… but I think that we are going to stay with my MIL for a number of weeks… Following that, the mother of one of my daughters friends’ takes care of children –and I may consider that an option in the future. It still seems surreal to me –but with so much going on, I just cannot focus on the future right now.

Doula and size of my OB practice I am not going to use a doula… Honestly, for me, it is overkill. I have already had a child, and like to try to do everything myself anyhow. The OB practice though has 4 OBs – and I will meet all of them prior to delivery.

Cravings and Food Nothing really tastes great—I eat, but it isn’t ever a phenomenal culinary experience. I am eating quite a bit of salad –and of course protein (meet me—the carnivore turned omnivore)…. I will say that whoever suggested lemonade though really has helped me! I do love sushi—but my DH has been busy preventing me from eating anything…but I hope to track down some eel soon… I do eat quite a bit of deli meat too…

People in the room I suppose it will be my DH, the doctor, nurse, and I. Honestly, I rarely saw the OB when my daughter was born…

Useful websites… I posted this originally in my LJ, but realized that all of my postings are friend-only (if you ever want to read along with the chaos, I can add you)…I said: The pregnancy websites in Europe (these are all French and Belgian basically) sometimes have different information than the American ones… So, I even though I have gone through two so far (http://www.magrossesse.com and http://www.infobebes.com), my friend gave me these: http://www.abcgrossesse.com/
http://www.eveiletjeux.com/ http://www.ptitouistiti.com/

I would love to respond to individual comments, but I am overtired now…So for the time being, know that I really enjoy reading everything…Just keep posting!

Bloomwood You're not the only one! I love seeing new mommies threads. Just think, by the time the July mommies have their babies, some of us will have 2 and 3 month olds.

Nettreefrog So sorry to hear you're going through so much as of late. I hope things look up for you soon.

Can someone tell me why the 1st trimester has magically reappeared? I had to leave class early last night because I had to make a run to the bathroom to get sick. WTF?

Nettreefrog Ah what a week. I am so sorry. I do research on Parkinson's disease and have lots of resources, so let me know if I can help you out in someway or send you any sources.

Kristin9903 Yikes, m/s is back. I have had a couple of instances and they take me by complete surprise. It isn't the oh I feel horrible I might be sick, rather it is oh I just got sick  Hope it is a rare thing for you!

I am doing well. Just found out a good friend was pregnant too but had a miscarriage at 9 weeks. So hard. I imagine we were due around the same time. Not sure how to help her or be there for her as the last thing she probably wants to watch is someone pregnant when she was supposed to be :( I hope it happens again for her soon.

Nettreefrog: I'm sorry you're having such a hard time right now!

Last night the fetal doppler I rented came. I tried twice to find the heartbeat to no avail, but when DH got home he was able to find it. I mainly rented it to take home with me at Christmas so my mom could hear the heartbeat, but now I think I'm going to be addicted!:p

Boomwood I hadn't thought about all the women with later due dates than ours. That really IS exciting!!!

Nettreefrog I'm so sorry to hear about all you've been dealing with. When it rains it pours, huh?

mrsk I'm thinking of renting a doppler for Xmas too. I think our parents would really get a kick out of hearing the heartbeat!! Where did you rent yours from? I've seen a bunch online.

I took a sick day yesterday, although I wasn't really sick. It was just nice to get caught up on some personal stuff and relax a bit (although I still have some work follow me home!)

Daycare Am I the only one considering a nanny/au pair instead of a day care? Because of the hours DH and I work - we have an almost 90 minute commute - it would be really difficult to put our child in a daycare facility. I'm never home before 7:30pm and DH gets home later than I do. Also, being an hour away, I think I'd feel better knowing my child has one on one care and can still be going to music classes, gymboree or whatever it is that babies do. Ideally, I'd like to work parttime - maybe 2-3 days a week and have an au pair. If I'm home most of the time, I don't mind having someone on the younger side. I'd love to get a European au pair who can speak a foreign language to the baby. I speak French and I'd love for the baby to be able to grow up learning it as well.
Do I sound totally off the wall now?

Nettree - I am sooo sorry for everything happening in your life right now. I hope that in a couple of weeks you are able to take some time for yourself. Maybe a massage or facial?

MrsK - What a great idea! I never thought of the doppler for sharing with the parents. I've been afraid of even thinking about one because I'm afraid I'd freak if I didn't hear the hb one day. Now I am re-thinking...

Fats - We aren't considering any childcare, but if we were, we'd definitely look into a nanny or, more likely for $$, a nannyshare. When we have 2, I might look into a nanny for a couple of days a week just to let me do things like grocery shop efficiently. We definitely want to get our child(ren) exposed to other languages early.

Kristin and Guinness (and any others suffering) - I'm really sorry the m/s beast has found you again.

Guinness - That is so sad for your friend. I hope she gets pg with a sticky baby soon.

Hope everyone has a good day! It's almost Friday!

I am so far behind! I could have sworn I posted the other day, but I guess not. Let's see if I can catch-up on QOTD's.

Daycare/Distance: the daycare center I am planning to use is right down the street from my office. I think its fine that the DC be there. At first DH wanted someplace in between, but then I reminded him that the DC will only be there if I'm at work, so he won't need to worry about picking it up if he has to. I did put my name down for info. and the timeframe when I would start bring the child in, but I'm not sure if I'm on a list really. I'll call them today!

Doula and OB practice: I haven't really read up about Doulas, but I don't think I'll be using one. My OB practice was also my GYN practice so I've known most of the doctors for years. It doesn't really bother me who delivers at this point. I pretty much like all of them.

Cravings: anythng with cheese or cream. I've always liked bagels and cream cheese and now I sometimes eat it for dinner (with some brushetta on top...mmmm).

people in the room: It should just be DH and I, the doctor, an whatever nurses or assistants need to be there. If my mom or any other family members were in the room, I think it would make me feel anxious. I don't even think I want anyone even waiting at the hospital either. Knowing that people are waiting on me just gets me too worked up!

Random
I know I am not drinking enough water these days. I've been drinking decaf tea, decaf coffee, milk, juice, saoda, but hardly any water. So I'm trying to make myself drink enough today. I even just finished a bottle of yummy lemon vitamin water.

Nettree I agree with Bloomwood when things calm down a bit make sure to do something for yourself. You so deserve it! Oh and thanks for the links. Now I really need to brush up on my French so I don't misinterprate something.

Gender prediction: DH and I decided, this past weekend, that we want to be surprised!

nettie
11-10-2005, 11:17 AM
Nannie Can't justify the cost, and would have some difficulty finding someone to trust. I know of a few families that have au pairs and its worked out great for them, but my understanding is that it is ideal for slightly older children, and you need to be comfortable having a someone living as a part of your family (ie, eating dinner together, going on vacations together). Given the positive experience that my friends had, I would consider it in a couple of years if we had a bigger house.

Daycare Starting the serious searching, plan on touring one near work and one near home next week. We'll need to get on few waitlists because infant spots are hard to find around here. I'm pretty excited about the one near work though. It came highly reccommended from a coworker. It's nice to hear such a positive experience about daycare.

Cravings In some bizarre twist of fate, I've been craving sweets much less than normal. I normally have a ridiculous sweet tooth. It was strange around Halloween, candy sitting around and I wasn't eating it?

People in the room The only family will be DH. Friends of ours had a really positive experience with a Doula, so I'm still on the fence about that.

Water I've also been struggling to drink enough, and I always feel better when I do. Speaking of which, time to refill my water bottle!

Sorry if someone asked this already and I know most of us have been having stretching/ligament pain, but does anyones butt hurt? I guess it's more like my tailbone? Sometimes when I sit down. This is normal right?

Guinness
11-11-2005, 05:28 AM
MrsK hmm I don't have what you are describing but I think I have heard people having it. I do sometimes get this very sharp cramp that shoots to my butt and hurts. Does yours hurt all the time?

Is anyone else getting headaches? I seem to get them daily and I am drinking lots of water and trying to keep my blood sugar level. They are getting old.

I too am on board with loving seeing July mommies thread. I lurk there a lot as well as Feb-march to know what is coming for us. It seems to be moving fast.

Hope everyone has a good Friday. I will try to get the new thread up maybe this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. I have never done it, so there may be some kinks.

Bloomwood -- Thanks for the suggestions about the Target ones, I went and picked up a bottle yesterday, hopefully they will treat my system better. I had tried the others with food, without, at night, etc.

nettreefrog -- Sounds like things have been really lousy, I hope that they improve. I know that it's easier said than done, but please take some time for yourself too.

I hope that the m/s is going better for everyone. I can't believe I finally hit 14 weeks! However, at a dinner meeting last night one of the older guys sat and ate tarter sauce straight. The smell and sight of it about made me run for the bathroom, I thought about asking him if he was pregnant, I've just never heard of anyone eating it straight. Other than that I've been feeling pretty good lately.

mrsk --As far as your tailbone hurting mine never did, but I've know a couple that have had pain back there. It went away after awhile, but I don't remember how long.

I've had sinus headaches for quite awhile now and they have been much worse during the pregnancy than before. However, some of that is probably due to the fact that I was taking flonase beforehand and it's not suggested during pregnancy, or at least if I can stand the discomfort don't do it.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful responses... (1) We fly to Florida in a few hours to help my father, figure out the estate planning process, and have the memorial service (Sunday). (2) My mother's best friend has set up a schedule for her cancer radiation --so hopefully everything will be eradicated within the next 2 months. (3) In happy news, my almost 99 year old grandfather made it through his hip replacement surgery with flying colors... They did a bone scan and a heart exam --and could not believe how great everything looked. It really makes one believe the old adage "You're only as old as you think you are." (4) I will not be back at work until Tuesday... but it was crazzzzzzzy yesterday...and I cannot fathom what I am coming back to. So--to sum it all up, I do not have much time for me right now... I'd just like to sit in the sun and read a magazine.

I will say that I am eating so much healthy food... Candy (aside from my weakness for Belgian chocolate) and junk food just don't interest me... And eating well really has made me feel good physically. Anyone else becoming a health food nut? Or obsessed about spicy food?

I was thinking that the "butt pain" may be hemorrhoids...If so, eating bran or prunes might help ;)

Happy Friday!

I'm sure the pain is just things stretching. It comes and goes and is similar to the hip pain I get sometimes.

Headaches: Yes! They haven't been too bad, but I usually get a dull headache in the evenings.

Flyerwife: I think the tartar sauce would send me to the bathroom even if I wasn't pregnant. Gross!

Nettreefrog: LOL. It's not that kind of pain! Good luck in FL.

Happy Friday everyone! I always laugh to post that seeing as I'm a SAHM, but Friday is Friday right?
Flyerwife: I've been getting sinus headaches too. aren't they horrible? I have this lavender scented eye pillow thing that helps, but it's pretty miserable.
Mrs.K: Maybe what you have is like sciatic pain? You said it's more when you sit? Bcs. I get horrible sciatic pain, but it's more when I walk. And it's sort of at the bottom of my hiney at the top of the back of my thighs. I know that it's normal w/ pregnancy. Sorry if that's way off target!
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. My next appt. is Monday. I'm hoping to schedule the big ultrasound to find out the sex, and hearing the hb...can't wait! I really want one of those doppler things too!

Guinness - thanks for starting the new thread. I guess after you do that, Kristin, Jen and I will take over moderating.

I am 15 weeks today. I feel like the first 12 went by so slowly and now they are flying.

I am not having any booty pain :p or headaches, but I have some pretty crazy bleeding gums. Even happens sometimes if I drink water. WATER! I am trying to get into the dentist so I can keep my gums healthy. (at least I can drink water again, I guess!)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

And, no Nettree, I cannot join you on the healthy eating. I wish. I got a salad bar salad yesterday with all fresh veggies, but then topped it with full-fat Ranch. Ruined that attempt.
