I used to paint canvases many years ago, but now I'm a decorative/furniture painter. Here is a recent piece I did. I refinished an old bureau that was my grandfather's and did decorative flower painting on it:

I am subscribing to this thread!

I am not an artist but last summer I went to the Turner, Whistler, Monet Exhibit and I was so mesmerized by the works. I have always loved Impressionist art but am not very creative so I would just study the history. After that exhibit, I feel inspired to paint and create.

Some tips would be helpful. For example, starting up is so expensive! I just want to get my feet wet first but all of the painting supplies are so expensive. Any tips?

Thank you so much, IrisHope! I find myself struggling to remember my Fine Arts-degree education when creating these pieces (like the basics of form and light), but it's tremendously rewarding.

Wow, you guys are amazing
I'm totally jealous. I barely dabble. But i enjoy it, even if I am bad at it, I'm embarrassed to post any of my stuff.

No one should be embarrassed to post their painting efforts, Vorian's Leronica. I'm sure they're lovely, and most importantly, fulfilling to your creativity.

painting is a wonderful release, I like my work but its very amatuer.
But whatever works to chill me out is a good thing.
I'll post one of my paintings later today when I get the chance.

THis is my husband's favorite:

my mother took both of those home to frame for her house, my dad was so surprised i could paint that he commisioned something for his formal living room...
no pressure there, something huge that everyone will see when they walk in the door, I'm kind of nervous about that and haven't started even coming up with an idea yet.
I'm flattered and very proud that my dad thinks my painting is any good but at the same time...

Obviously all I can paint so far is landscapes. I can't do people yet, though I'm working on it.

I am undertaking something that for me at least is ambitious (so I'm cheating)
my girls love cinderella and sleeping beauty so I printed up a couple of pics and I used transfer paper to copy them on canvas board, then I'm going to paint them.

VL, your work is lovely! Beautiful use of color, and sort of impressionistic. I love it! I think you're quite talented.

If you are interested in learning more about the basics of form and function, light and shadow, etc., take an anatomy (figure-drawing) class, where you'll learn to draw the human body in charcoal. My teachers used to say you cannot draw ANYTHING until you learn to draw the human body perfectly.

Thank you :)
like I said I'm a complete amatuer, i haven't taken an art class since elementary school I think.
I would love to take some classes, especially in drawing the human form.
Right now budget and time doesn't allow, but I'm hoping one of these days. This has become a hobby that I am very into.

I paint and draw, but I don't have any pictures of my work. I am currently pursuing a minor in art, but this semester I really don't have the time to do anything artistic.

My work is all realist and I try to get a lot of photorealism in my work. That being said I absolutly love impressionism and would love to be able to paint that way, but I can't do it since I am so realist. I took a pastel class this summer and it made me be more impressionistic and it was really hard, but fun.

I will try to get a picture of one of my pieces sometime this weekend.

I have to actually update my portfolio. I paint, but haven't completed a new one in years - mainly due to new "small" house without a studio!

Some of these are really bad photos...this one in particular..has shades of lighter / darker blues mixed together in the background.

My best advice is PRACTICE, PRACTICE PRACTICE

Thanks VL - they're ions old it feels like. It's been a while since I've been able to find the time to do anything.

I'm sure you "can" draw, just continue practicing! I have no formal art training...my mother was an art teacher during the day and worked at MOMA (museum of modern art, NY) many moons ago so I was "taught" by her...

Unfortunately my favorite is not clear because of the lighting in our family room. The one on the right is similar but to me it gives a feeling of chaos. The darker one on the left actually has softer blues and greens and gives me a sense of peace. Pardon the flash.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5ce09b3127cce948ec237239e00000016108AYtWjhs4Ztm http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5ce09b3127cce948ecd7de27b00000016108AYtWjhs4Ztm

Here are a few others I have hanging in my family room.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5ce09b3127cce948ecdfa63cc00000025118AYtWjhs4Ztm http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5ce09b3127cce948ecdcfe2c900000016108AYtWjhs4Ztm

Here are two I painted for my DD's room. They were painted to go next to the "stems" of flower wall sconces.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5ce09b3127cce948ec64323e800000036128AYtWjhs4Ztm
FWIW, my DH is not a big fan of my paintings so for the most part they stay in the family room (the least used room in the house). He has said that they are growing on him though.

Leronica & MeetheGirlie ~ Thank so much :D
Kindermom ~ Out of your pieces I like the two mirrored 'fruit' the best. Something about the color and it's freshness. What medium do you use to paint? oils? acrylic?
