Who's going to watch it?
It starts this Thursday night. Here's a synopsis from Fox's website:
REUNION marks a groundbreaking concept in series television as it chronicles the lives of a group of six friends over the course of 20 years -- all in just one season. Part character drama and part murder mystery, REUNION tells stories of love and loss, marriage and death, triumph and scandal as it depicts both the hopes and dreams of 18-year-olds as well as the realities that mark those lives two decades later.
WILL (Will Estes) longs to leave his small town behind. Aided by an athletic scholarship, he is the first in his family to go to college. CRAIG (Sean Faris), handsome and privileged, looks forward to the Ivy League with his girlfriend, SAMANTHA (Alexa Davalos), whose ambition is surpassed only by her looks and intelligence. The beautiful JENNA (Amanda Righetti) dreams of becoming an actress, and behind his cynicism, AARON (Dave Annable) dreams that his relationship with Jenna will go beyond friendship. CARLA (Chyler Leigh), innocent and quirky, must choose between loyalty to her father and staying near her best friends.
REUNION opens in the present day at the funeral of one of the friends, whose death is being investigated by DETECTIVE MARJORINO (Mathew St. Patrick). Before the identity of the deceased is revealed, we’re transported back to 1986, as the group is celebrating their high school graduation.
The pilot episode follows all six through the summer of 1986, and we witness the formative events that alter their dreams and desires forever. Episode two finds the group a full year later, in 1987; episode three tells the story of a seminal event in 1988, and so on -- culminating in the season finale as the friends celebrate their 20th high school reunion.
REUNION also will build toward answering two important questions raised in episode one: Which of the friends is dead? And who is responsible for that death?
I'm going to try it out for a few episodes. Hoping it'll be good!

I had it on my TiVo list, and my TiVo just crapped out. DirectTV is sending me a replacement unit that is supposed to be here Wed or Thurs since today is Saturday and Monday is a holiday. I'm too spoiled to watch TV with commercials anymore!! I think the concept is really neat, though, and I'm looking forward to it!! I really like that the timeline is set in MY generation!!

I'll give it a try. I guess there won't be a second season, though. I wonder why Fox picked it up if there's no chance of it coming back... unless we're going to watch them go through ages 38-58 during season 2. :D

I think that they would probably switch to an entirely different group of friends for a second season... they could probably go on forever like that, if it works. (I didn't think that 24 would have a second season, either, but it's still going.)

Holy 90210 flashbacks Batman.
Thought it was a pretty predictable episode to say the least. It was just an okay show, not great, but not boring either. I do think I will keep watching it though. I'm curious to find out who died, how they died and to see how their lives evolve....
What did y'all think?

I liked it. As southerner said though, it was a little predictable, then again, it's a FOX drama :) I'll definitly keep watching though because 1) I need something other than a reality show to be hooked on, and 2) I graduated HS in the class of 86, so it will be cool to follow along with these people who are my present age, and grew up on my same timeline.

I watched!!
Overall I enjoyed it. It was a bit slow, a bit predictable but I can see it sucking me in as we get more involved with the characters. I think that was part of the problem but couldn't be helped - I didn't really feel connected with the characters. At the same time, it's a mystery and I can't have my cake & eat it too.
I'm definitely interested in seeing how these characters evolve into whoever they are today. I'm hoping we'll be introduced to more "present day" versions as the detective questions them but I'm not sure how they can do that without giving away who the murdered one was.
So anyone want to take a guess? Who do you think is the murdered friend?
PS - Loved the 80's flashback fashion, music and statements. "You're so Molly Ringwald." " You cried at St. Elmo's Fire" ;) But there was one scene where the curly haired girl was talking to Aaron and she was wearing a shirt I never saw in the 80s!

Ok I have to say I watched it and I am hooked I thought it was good, predictable also and I am looking to follow along to what happend in the years to come.
I thought the writing was awful. Sorry for those who really liked it, but it was so predictable. It was too narrative to the point where I told myself "No one talks like that." I really thought the music was overkill and the clothing, for the most part, was not of that year. It seemed they were trying to convince you that it was 1986 every which way they could instead of using the year as a backdrop to the story.
Who was the adult at the end? Was that the blond actress?

Yup, that's the big mystery.
Oh...so it's like the whole "who killed JR thing"...only we don't know who was killed! :p

I don't know about Thursday nights...but WHY do all the shows seem like they're crammed into 2 or 3 nights and then there's nothing on the other nights? I get tired of watching one show, taping another show on the other VCR and hoping to catch a rerun of yet another show later that night or next day! Wednesday night was like that for me last year.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought it was predictable, but I will keep watching! DH watched the first 10 minutes with me and thought it was like a big PSA with the drunk driving and the unwanted pregnancy storylines back to back. Pretty funny. I agree with those who thought the writing was a little lame, it was almost like watching a bad play in high school! I like the idea of the flashing between the 80's and the present, and am curious about the whole mystery thing. Here's one thing I don't get. It's supposed to run over 2 decades, one year per show. What happens if it gets canceled? Do we only get up to 1992? ;) Likewise, what if it gets picked up for another season? It seems weird, like they've boxed themselves in to a weird style. Anyone else think that? I know I'm WAY overanalyzing this! :D
JillianS
09-09-2005, 10:41 AM
I was thinking along those lines as well. If it's one year per episode, it's been say, 20 years, so that's 20 episodes, but what happens when we reach 2005? Then what? Does the show end? Is it just a one season show? Does it keep going with the modern-day characters and their lives? I don't get it.

I liked it, but mainly because I like Chyler Leigh a lot, and always thought she was wasted on her other (short-lived) shows. I agree that the writing was boring, and I missed parts of it, so I was a little confused. But I'm going to try it for a few weeks and see how I feel then.
BTW, I heard that we find out who died in episode 2.

I thought it was pretty good. Definitely generic . . . . but I think to get into the more interesting years to come, we kinda had to have a predictable first episode/year for the characters (they had to set up the future plot lines somehow). . . obviously, all of what happened will (hopefully) have far reaching and unpredicatable ramifications.
As to it being a bit stereotypical with the teen drinking and pregnancy. . . yes, it was, but that IS what happens in high school. (ie, my HS. . . . pregancies in the class below me totaled FOUR. . . out of only 30 kids!!!). Kind of one of those deals where it's a stereotype because it does happen. . . and more often than we usually remember as we age. Granted, they could have thrown us a little bit more creativity, but there's still 19 more years. . . . I am holding out hope for the later years, when life gets more interesting! :)
I'm giving it a few more "years" to grow on me. . . then, we'll see!! It's got a great time slot though (right after OC).

I really thought the music was overkill and the clothing, for the most part, was not of that year.
This is what I was thinking the whole time... it seemed a little off, and like they were trying to use too much music to disguise that they hadn't put as much attention to detail into the set and costumes as they should have.
I thought it was just okay, although I'll probably keep watching a few more times to see if it gets better. I like the concept of the show, I hope it turns around.

Overall I enjoyed it. It was a bit slow, a bit predictable but I can see it sucking me in as we get more involved with the characters. This was my reaction exactly.
I was interested because of the format, and because, having graduated high school in 1981, I am just 5 years ahead of these guys. I can't help it - I like to look for discrepancies.
For example, I don't remember home pregnancy tests being available in pharmacies that early. I became pregnant in 1988 with my son, and I had to go to the doctor to take a test - you can be sure if they were available over the counter, I'd have gotten one!
Also, it's slightly unbelievable that 6 people supposedly so different are friends. Would a hot girl really be friendly with a dorky boy?
I'll still watch for a while, though.

The Dad.
I just watched it {DVR} and I really liked it, even with the awkward dialogue, and overkill on pop culture. I was a kid during the mid-80s but my husband was in HS then so it's fun to look at his HS years through their eyes.

I watched the pilot rerun last night and I'm glad to hear other people said that the writing was awful! Otherwise, I would have been really worried that this is what's passing for good TV these days. The premise is good, and it doesn't even matter that the plot was so predictable, but come on, at least make up for the predictable plot by infusing some good writing.
I think the only reason I might keep watching is because there's nothing else on at 8 pm CST on Friday nights. :p

I agree that besides the music, it wasn't very 80's. I remember one of the guys having on a polo shirt with the collar up and they gave one of the girls a Madonna getup. Other than that, it didn't strike me as very 80's. What really stuck out to me, though, was the hair. No respectable girl in the 80's had hair that was as flat as those three.

Same here. Yesterday my DVR description was 1987 and today it changed to 1986. I'm thinking that b/c of the presidents speech they would not be able to show it on the east coast, therefore not showing it all. That's exactly how I feel!! Good point about bad scenes. The one with the gun in the library was not "very suspenseful" (like Kate going down the hatch was, you LOST fans).
They're wanting us to think its' Jenna (the high school slut) or Craig (the highschool jocky rich kid) that are murdered. None of these people would have been a group of friends in my high school. Were any of you ever part of a group of friends like this??

The funny thing is that Chyler Leigh (who plays Carla) is widely considered the best actor on the show. And she is very good in the flashbacks (remember the scenes with her dad?) but even she can't do anything with the scripting for the present day stuff
I read that Fox is very invested in her; this is her third fox series. The first was That 80's Show:

The funny thing is that Chyler Leigh (who plays Carla) is widely considered the best actor on the show. And she is very good in the flashbacks (remember the scenes with her dad?) but even she can't do anything with the scripting for the present day stuff
So true! She's definitely my favorite, and I've liked her ever since That 80's Show, which I watched just because she made a really dumb, cliched character interesting.
The music and fashions are still throwing me off in this show. That, and the awful writing. There is no way Will is a priest and that he aged 20 years. Maybe it's because it's been almost 20 years since I entered high school, but if I looked exactly like I did in high school I wouldn't be too happy about it ;)
See you all next week to bitch about the show I can't stop watching!

Either this week or next (can't remember, sorry!) is the last new episode they are going to show for a month while the world series playoffs are on. This is one of those things that really gets me. There are a bazillion and one channels dedicated to sports. Why not put all that crap on there instead of screwing up my schedule???

Hmmm .. I think they should have waited until AFTER the playoffs to even start the series. I think they are going to lose a lot of viewers this way. I don't think they've created enough suspense for people to be thinking "ohh I can't WAIT until november for this show to come back!" I think people are more likely to be thinking "So much for that show .. I won't even remember it come November".

And I'm still digging the music. :p I loved the tunes played during the party. I told DH I was having 8th grade dance flashbacks ;)
I'm still watching. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, the writing stinks. Yes, I want to smack the characters around ALOT. But I still want to know who died and who killed them.
My thought on the overall look and feel of the show is that it's a glossed over stereotype-lite version of the 80s. Like whoever wrote the show was young during the late 80s and now they're including only the small bits that live in their memory while at the same time, modernizing it to appeal to today's OC-loving crowd. KWIM?

EXACTLY. Anyone who's lived through that time knows when this show goes way off! While I'm glad they're not going all Wedding Singer (which was perfect for the movie because it was a comedy), there's no way I'd know when this was set.

(while saying he was going to start a business.) It was the same logo the camera focused on when Will went to go see him in the present day clip. He apparently started a company and now it's uber-successful.
I could see why you wouldn't have recognized him - *really* bad aging make-up.
My son watched with me last night (age 16) and even HE was saying this is SO predictable!
I was groaning when it turned out that Detective Marjorino's adoptive father had been the one killed in the pick-up truck accident with Will and the rich kid whose name I still don't remember. Oh, please. Like that's a necessary plot twist that makes the whole thing so much more believable.
Why would father will say he only ever committed one crime – doesn’t he know perjury is a crime?

And they would never, in a million years, let this detective on the case if there was personal involvement. I guess you could argue that maybe they wouldn't know but that isn't believable.

As to who is dead- I keep going back & forth between rich kid & curly haired girl. I have this theory that maybe the blood sample will implicate Father Will but it won't be his. Instead it will be the blood of his child who is now all grown up and somehow was involved with the murder of either of the two.

Will = Priest
Sam = Curly haired young mom
Carla = the "level headed one" (aka the girl with the flat hair that no self-respecting 80's chick would be seen outside the house in)

Aaron = Geeky kid who is now metrosexual and hip

That aging job on Aaron(?-the one who went to Seattle) was soooo bad. EW. I'm curious about the scene in the preview where Sam was walking up to find Will watching the little blonde girl. I can't believe they started these shows, only to show like 3 episodes, then take them off again until November. Does anyone know what the reason is?
When Carla interviewed for the nanny position- did the baby's adoptive parents move to the U.S.? Or did she hop a plane to London?

Why yes they did. Coincedently enough in the same town they live in now
Good theory about the daughter being involved in the murder. She'd be 19 now, but that would mean that Will and Carla would be in/know about it (remember when they were talking about the gun and Carla did such an oh so good job getting rid of it?) In the previews, Carla yelled "she'll tell them everything" That only leaves Sam, Jenna or the daughter, Amy. Maybe Father Will will go to jail for her too :p
Guess I'll see you ladies in a month

Jenna: her story line is ridiculous. Like she'd be living with her two high school friends as a rich and famous actress. Plus, she's boring.
Wouldn't it have been a better story line if Sam had simply interviewed for the Nanny position and gotten it? Then she'd be able to have the moral dilemma over whether or not to tell the parents her true identity, and/or have fantasies about kidnapping the child.

Saw this in Entertainment Weekly: (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/review/tv/0,6115,1110975_3|110423||0_0_,00.html)
"One famous '80s song offered these kernels of wisdom: ''The Reflex is a lonely child, he's waiting by the park/the Reflex is in charge of finding treasures in the dark.'' The meaningless Duran Duran lyrics are an apt analogy for Reunion, Fox's lightweight whodunit packed with '80s references — it could be a fun bit of pop trash if you never try to decipher any meaning from it. Reunion kicks off with a shamefully nifty gimmick: In the present day, one of six tight-knit friends has been murdered. The key to the shooting lies way back over the years, starting when the group graduated high school in 1986. Each episode covers a new year — '86, '87, '88 and so on — while flashing forward to current day, where the now grown-up friends are being interrogated by Det. Kenny Marjorino (Matthew St. Patrick, a hair less gloomy than he was on Six Feet Under). He's sure one of them did it."
See the link for more ...
The last line is:
"Work out the kinks and this could be a silly, sorta fun soap — but Reunion is never going to be as cool as its premise."
Yeah ... like we've been sayin'!

Fox really ticks me off with their damn baseball crap.
Jenna is boring. Her predictable neuroses make me not care one whit about her.
Why yes they did. Coincedently enough in the same town they live in now OMG - I had the biggest WTF moment when Carla did this. Could this be any more convenient. My eyes rolled so hard, I saw the top of my skull.
Wouldn't it have been a better story line if Sam had simply interviewed for the Nanny position and gotten it? Oh - I gotcha. Yeah, I agree but then again, Sam's a pretty weak character - like weak-willed so I guess it's not farfetched to imagine that she wouldn't have the ability to fake it like Carla's going to do. Gah - I think we're having more fun saying what the show should be doing! ;)

suzubeane, ITA! That bothered me when Will said that, if he really is priest, then lying while swearing to God to tell the truth is a big deal!
I agree with you ladies that this show is farfetched, but I still watch it. Another part that was crazy was Jenna's apartment. It is palacial, how did she ever afford that by just working 1 year in NYC??? I did like how she became famous for dancing on cars in Whitesnake videos!

I love this show... And I don't know why. It's bad acting most of the time, and some of the writing SUCKS, but I still watch. And now, I'm even sad that it's not going to be back until November.
I read in US Weekly that we'll find out who was killed in 1990 (which is episode 5). And I wonder if they'll do the whole 20 years this season, or if it will be broken up? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...
As for my guesses on who is the 'dead one,' for some reason, I'm thinking Jenna (actress girl). I think that both Craig and Sam are too obvious, but they haven't shown a lot of Jenna yet, so maybe she's the one.
Or another thought I had was what if one of the original friends didn't kill their friend... What if Sam & Will's baby comes back and kills the 'dead one?' Then it would make sense for it to be Craig... There's that preview where Will is at Craig & Sam's wedding, and he asks Sam to 'run away' with him, what if she didn't and married Craig anyway? Maybe that would have been enough reason for Amy (Sam & Will's baby) to kill Craig...

Carla must end up telling Will about the daughter (maybe Sam did??) since we see him with her (the daughter) in the previews. By then, the year of that episode, she'd only be 3 (1990) or 4(1991).

Yea, that's what I thought... Someone had to tell him and the only people who know are Carla and Sam. I think that as predictible and as bad as the writing is in this show, Amy being the killer is a DEFINITE possibility. Because by 'present day' she'd be almost 20.

This is a very detailed summary of the 1990 episode. It has who dies, whether or not Sam (and who to) she gets married, why Carla tunrs evil (a little) and tons of other good info :D Good storylines, now if only the actors can do it well
in white, highlight to read.....
October 1990. Everyone is now 22.
Aaron
Aaron has been living in Prague for a year and is waiting at a train station, on his way to Brussels, only for his train to be delayed. He meets Pascale (25) and they bond over the fact that they are reading the same book -- The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Later they find themselves at a quaint little inn, where they are all over each other, until Aaron notices the ring Pascale wears on a chain around her neck. She admits that she is married but she's leaving her husband. Aaron is in disbelief, especially after she tells him they were just married the week before, after their first date. She left him because she was scared of being married to someone she doesn't even know, despite the great sex. Aaron asks why Pascale didn't try to be friends with the guy, but she thinks it's impossible to have chemistry like that with a good friend. Aaron tells her he had sex with his best friend (Carla) before a wedding last year, but quickly changes the subject when the topic turns to love. Eventually they end up kissing again, but it isn't the same as before; their hearts are somewhere else. Aaron is left wondering where exactly his heart is. The next morning Aaron wakes up to find Pascale gone, but her book left behind, the words "Go get her" written on the inside. Aaron quickly packs his bag and runs for the door, planning to do just that.
Carla
Carla is at the park with Amy. She's on edge, afraid that the real reason she is Amy's nanny is close to being discovered. We realize that someone is watching her. Carla takes photos of Amy while she plays on the jungle gym. She stops to reload her film, then brings the camera back up...but she doesn't see Amy anywhere. Amy's gone. Carla is frantic, searching the play area, before she finally spots Amy with Meghan, the adoptive mother that abandoned Amy a year ago. (Carla gets Amy back but there is no information about that.) Back at Paul's apartment, Carla is on the phone, only for Paul to grab it away from her. He's frustrated and asks who Carla was talking to, wondering if she has another boyfriend or if there is something she's trying to keep from him. Later on, Carla has locked herself in a room, with Paul pounding on the door and demanding that Carla open it. She slides down into a corner and makes herself as small as possible, tears burning down her cheeks, trapped in a prison of her own creation.
Craig
Craig is meeting with the Brewster Group's accountant, Phil. Craig wants to keep the company going, at least until his father is out of prison. Phil doesn't think it's possible unless Craig visits his father and finds out where the rest of the assets are. Craig's pride kicks in and he refuses to go crawling to his father for help. Phil asks if he's told Sam about the situation, but Craig tells Phil to stick to numbers and let Craig handle his marriage. We realize Sam chose Craig a year ago, not Will.
Jenna
Sam picks up Jenna from the airport and drives her to the hospital. They talk about Jenna's new film role, where she plays Val Kilmer's wife who dies during a police raid at their house. It's her big break, but her mother is making her return to Bedford in the middle of the shoot, claiming that she (Jenna's mother) is dying. Jenna doesn't believe her mother's claims and is infuriated that she would ruin this for Jenna. At the hospital, Jenna is annoyed to learn that her mother only has pneumonia. The doctor fills her in, that the pneumonia is a complication of AIDS. Jenna is shocked to learn her mother has AIDS and that she has had it for eight months, without ever telling Jenna. Jenna visits her mother and they talk. Jenna tells her mother that they aren't getting rid of each other that easily and they're going to be stuck with each other for another twenty years.
Sam
Sam is on her way to pick up Jenna from the airport, when Craig stops her. He asks why Sam married him. Sam says it's because she loves Craig, that he's her best friend and there's no one else in the world she would rather be married to.
Will
Will is now a soldier at an army base, practicing at the shooting range. His bunkmate, Danny, sits nearby, writing letters. Danny asks whose face Will sees when he's shooting at the target. Will doesn't answer and instead asks about all the letters Danny's writing, which he learns are for Danny's sister, Vanessa. If Danny doesn't write to her once a week, she's convinced he's dead. Danny asks if Will has anyone to write to and Will admits that the people he wants to write to don't want to hear from him after what happened last year. Danny brings up the rumors that they are being shipped out, but Will says Kuwait doesn't scare him -- he's been to worse places without even leaving Bedford.
Present Day
Carla, Will, Craig and Aaron are at Craig's loft. A child is crying for his mommy from the bedroom. Craig says that would be Liam, who has been having nightmares. He starts wheeling towards the bedroom, but is intercepted by fifteen year old Henry, Craig and Sam's miracle baby. Henry tells his dad he'll take care of it and goes inside to tend to Liam.
Marjorino has left Jenna waiting for three hours and she's now exhausted and vulnerable, just the way he wanted her to be. Marjorino asks if she's ready to give her statement now and she agrees. He begins to set up and looks at the TV, still frozen to an image of Sam on her last night alive. Marjorino comments that she was beautiful and way too young to die.
Back at the loft, Henry is comforting six year old Liam. He tells Liam not to worry, that Mommy's gone, but she okay, because she's in heaven now. Craig, the widow and grieving father, watches from the doorway, a distant expression on his face, almost as if he were hiding something...

So - I was very disappointed in the "Wedding Ensemble". The headpiece was so not 80's. I should say - what headpiece? The headpiece was an integral part of all 80's wedding ensembles. And the dress was close but that bow on her butt needed to be about twice the size it was.
I think it's Sam that got killed. And if so - good!!! She is the weakest character. One minute she's kissing Will and the next she's telling Craig she loves him. Gack!
I'm interested to find out how Craig got paralyzed. Drunk Driver maybe? I'm finding it hard to swallow that he's a senator though

What happened!? What happened!?
I dozed off during the commercial break after the oh-so-believable scene between Sam and Will at the door (the rain wasn't much of a cheap trick for effect, huh?) In fact, I think I was already falling asleep when they were talking because I don't remember what she said or if it made any sense.
When I came to, Marjorino was talking to Will in the pool.
So my unanswered questions include: What happened to Arron's girlfriend? Was she really in the hotel? How did he end up in bed with Carla?
What else happened?
Besides the usual poor acting/writing etc (actually, I'm beginning to think its all the writing and directing, since most of these actors have proven themselves in other things) the thing that bothered me was the way they really screwed up with the adoptive mother's storyline. First they infer that she's depressed, and then they're characterizing her as "unhappy." With all the misconceptions there are about depression, it's just irresponsible to confuse treatable mental illness with "unhappiness" due to having a hard-to-live-with husband. The writers really demonstrated a lot of ignorance here, and frankly propagating myths about depression is dangerous.

ITA with this, but based on the spoiler I posted awhile ago we know this is an ongoing story, so maybe they'll do a better job, but probably not
What happened to Arron's girlfriend? Was she really in the hotel? How did he end up in bed with Carla?
He ended up fessing up that she didn't come with him b/c she broke up with him right before they were supposed to leave. They left the rehearsal dinner together and went back to their loft. Aaron tells her that he is going to Prague to sell technology there and Carla starts talking about what a risk-taker he is. She starts saying all this stuff to him and he says something like "wow, you know me better than the girlfriend I've been living with this past year." They start kissing and you know the rest....
Miss anything else?

Thanks, southerner. Oh, and I think MsPeachy just wanted to let you know about the spoiler for the next time. Considering a lot of us do get e-mails, maybe post a link (that probably would have worked for the first one) or put "spoiler" at the top and then leave a lot of spaces before you write any plot line stuff.
she broke up with him right before they were supposed to leave What a stupid way to try to build up suspense over a possible pregnancy! We're supposed to buy that he lied to his best friends? Is the audience supposed to believe that he thought she would show up at the eleventh hour and he wouldn't have to fess up? Oy vey!
Oh, and I assume that Craig's father was arrested right before the wedding, right? How come Will wasn't arrested, too? Didn't they tell him that was likely? Or was he off the hook because the FBI said they didn't need him anymore?

Or was he off the hook because the FBI said they didn't need him anymore Yup...that's the way I understood it.
Will wanted out at one point, but the Feds wouldnt let him. After that, though, Craig's dad started to suspect Will was up to something fishy. Thus the Feds said that they couldnt use him anymore, but he'd fulfilled the terms of their agreement to help their investigation so it seems they did end up granting him immunity.

Just thought of one more thing I hated about last night's episode. ;)
Craig's "revelation" that Sam was "the girl who got Will through prison" and who he professed his love for after he got out. In the second episode it was really clear that he suspected that, so why act all surprised now?

Just got done watching my Tivo'd episode. Those definitely were not 80's bridesmaid dresses. I didn't read the whole thread, sorry if someone said that already. Now we know the murdered friend is a she (I didn't read the spoiler). And we've seen Carla, so it's Sam or the other one, still can't remember her name. I can't wait to see who Sam chooses before the wedding.

spoiler(ish) about tomorrow's episode........................
PRESENT: Marjorino is happy because he found someone important in his case and will get a statement. If the previous episodes didn't give us enough info about who died, this one will. PAST (1990): Jenna is shooting a movie in New York but as to come back home when she learns her mother is sick. Craig has a meeting with his father's accountant about the company. Craig wants to keep his father's company afloat but things are not going to be easy. Carla is afraid that the secret of her becoming Amy's nanny so Sam could see her will soon be discovered. Aaron meets a beautiful French woman named Pascale while in a Prague train heading for Brussels. Will is in the Army.

won't get to it until this weekend, how was it tonight?
It was predictable, as usual. Seriously, this is becoming my "Titans". Remember that awful show?
My favorite predictable moment was when Carla meets Amy's mother in the park and (dun dun duuuuuun) Amy's dad was spying on them!
Worst line of the night: Will joking "Enough confession! What am I, a priest?" Groan.
I love this show. ;)

Things the writers of Reunion expect us to believe:
- That Paul would exhibit NO signs of anger or aggression for two years, then suddenly turn into a raving controlling violent lunatic
- That Meghan would have left her child with said raving controlling violent lunatic a year earlier.
- That Carla feels any loyalty to this guy (was she into him at all?!) OR that she apparently feels enough to stay with him for a whole year, which we get from the previews for next week.
- That having mind-blowing sex with a woman he felt an instant connection to caused Aaron to realize that he was in love with ... someone else.
- That laughing until one coughs would cause a person with pneumonia to die.
- That Craig could step in and run his father's company with ZERO experience and no contact with Dad.
- That a soldier shipping out could just go walk over to a fence and talk to a visitor
- That a woman who was told she could not conceive would later inexplicably be able to ...
Have I left anything out?
Okay, well if you insist ;)
-That a videographer at a class reunion would allow someone to drone on for what it seems like 12 years about the secrets she and her friends kept......after high school.
- On the soldier shipping out - that they would've allowed a visitor without any ties to casually drive by and say "what's up"
- that people don't lose touch after high school, especially after traveling around the world, no matter how much they profess their closeness in high school (Aaron? Jenna? Yeah.)
- that Jenna's star power seems to keep growing and growing, yet she always seems to be starring in the next big movie which will be her big break. Does she keep losing these roles?
- that Paul, who apparently is obsessive and controlling, would know nothing about his nanny/now girlfriend. Yeah.
Oh, there are so many other points.

Oh yeah! I did think of that! AND why would she be droning on and on about 1990! (or whatever year it was.)
- that Jenna's star power seems to keep growing and growing, yet she always seems to be starring in the next big movie which will be her big break. Does she keep losing these roles?
AND ... if she's such a big star, why do her friends still need to pick her up at the airport?
AND why the hell would Sam own a car in NYC? Aren't they "broke?"
- that Paul, who apparently is obsessive and controlling, would know nothing about his nanny/now girlfriend. Yeah.
Good point. He's not a very effective intimidator, is he? That is until his ex-wife mentions "his temper" to Carla, and then BAM! That night! An angry outburst! (about which the next day Meghan says: "Oh, so you see what I mean now!" Why yes! What good timing!)

I'm still watching too. At least we found out who was killed.
With Amy's adoptive dad (Paul) an abuser and the adoptive mom disappeared, I was wondering if this would lead to Sam eventually trying to get custody of Amy. Carla would then have to testify against Paul in a very dramatic scene!
I missed the previews. Can someone please telll me what will happen?

Carla is seen, all battered and bruised, holding a gun out, pointing it at Paul. It's the same gun that was used in the murder.

I already knew it was Sam (see 1992 spoiler I posted). Did she die in this episode? Or you just know from a comment made in the present?
ginastorm
11-11-2005, 01:41 PM
No, she didn't die in this episode. We find out from a comment made in the present. We see a video clip of her during their 20 year high school reunion. Sam looked exactly the same, only she had straight hair. Up until this part I thought that the show had done a reasonable job with aging the characters to present day. Sam must have found the fountain of youth. And then died.
Was it just me or did Will look especially good looking in his army uniform?
kam, thanks for the info about next week's episode!
suzubeane
11-11-2005, 01:43 PM
Did she die in this episode? Or you just know from a comment made in the present?Scroll up and read comments about a reunion videographer. You're lead to believe you're watching a videotaped interrogation of her, but you're not. (I would not have said this much, but you said you liked spoilers!)
I must not be as on-the-ball as I thought, Kam, because I did not catch this until the end. However, I knew Carla would end up with Paul as soon as his wife left in the last episode.
By the way, I don't know which myth it's worse to be lending credibility to: That a depressed person is just "unhappy" because her husband is abusive? Or that an abused woman is really not abused, she's just depressed. Are there any women on the show's writing staff? Geez!

To me, Paul will always be "Brian MacKenzie" from the "Father of the Bride" movies. I guess I've watched those movies too many times!
I guess it's good that this wasn't following my friends from high school. The first four episodes would've been "Went to college. Some stayed in touch. Some didn't." No wars, jailtime, pregnancies, people who became Hollywood starlets, marriages (well, there was one, but we had bets at the "wedding" that it would last a month and it did), manslaughter, etc. Man, I didn't realize we were so boring in our first four years after high school! College! That's it!

of ALL nights to get company, it had to be Reunion night, right?
So, let me get this right... Sam is the the one who was murdered, Aaron realizes he loves Carla after having mind-blowing sex with the train girl, Carla is pointing a gun, the SAME GUN that is locked up in a cabinet in the Brewster mansion, at Paul and Sam is pregnant again. Am I on track so far?
Two questions, How did Carla get the gun from Craig's house? and Did Sam choose Craig or Will? (Although, it seems obvious from the fact of Will being in the Army/War that she chose Craig.)
And I agree... Those look like MODERN bridesmaid dresses, not dresses from 1989...I blame the costumers of the show for THAT blunder.

1990
Aired November 10, 2005
PRESENT DAY –Sergeant Fisher orders Marjorino to videotape his interrogations because she believes he is obsessed with the case and could do something to jeopardize it.
FLASHBACK TO 1990 – Jenna’s mother calls and interrupts her on the movie shoot.
Craig refuses to turn to his father for help in keeping the Brewster Group afloat while Russell is in prison. He hasn’t even discussed this issue with his wife, Samantha. Meanwhile, Sam grills Carla about her new mystery boyfriend.
The next morning, Carla wakes in bed with Paul Phillips. She has been living with him and Amy. Paul asks why he’s never met any of her friends, but Carla is evasive. Paul gets a hang-up when someone calls. He assumes it’s one of Carla’s friends.
PRESENT DAY – Carla arrives at Craig and Sam’s loft. Craig answers the door in his wheelchair. He tells her that he has tried to prevent Marjorino from questioning “her,” but Craig was unable to stop the interrogation because he is not on the best of terms with the woman these days.
A thirty-eight year old Sam is being taped as she answers questions. She says that her friends have always had a lot of secrets. She explains how her friends were all apart in 1990 and that she and Craig had a difficult second six months of marriage.
FLASHBACK TO 1990 – Craig is distant with Sam. He wonders why she even went through with their wedding. “Because there’s no one in the world I’d rather be married to,” she says.
On an army base, Will goes through gun training. He notices that his friend and fellow soldier Danny Sanchez always carries letters, and Danny explains that they are to send to his sister. Will bemoans that no one wants to hear from him.
Sam picks up Jenna, who has flown in from California. Jenna took a break from her movie because her mother claims to be dying. Jenna thinks that Brenda is only trying to sabotage her career. Jenna breaks the news to Sam that Will is shipping out to the war in Kuwait. Sam is in shock.
Aaron reads the book “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” while waiting in a Prague train station. Pascale, a beautiful French girl with the same book, approaches him.
Sam confronts Carla, who also knew about Will’s deployment. Carla had promised that she wouldn’t tell Sam or Craig about Will. Carla asks whether Sam called her at the Phillips house because Paul is becoming suspicious. Samantha is startled when Amy refers to Carla as “mommy.” Sam realizes that Carla has been sleeping with Paul Phillips. “You are her mommy,” Sam sighs, feeling betrayed.
Sam returns home and tells Craig about Will being shipped to Kuwait. She wants them to bid goodbye to him, but Craig refuses. Sam is angry that Craig keeps closing himself off from her.
Carla answers the phone in the Phillips apartment, but no one is on the line. She says Sam’s name into the receiver, but then Paul grabs the phone and the person hangs up. He accuses her of hiding something.
Jenna learns that her mother is dying from AIDS. She softens for her mom, determined to help Brenda get through this.
When their train is delayed, Aaron invites Pascale out into Prague and she accepts.
Carla is photographing Amy in the park when the little girl disappears. She sees her being held by Meghan Phillips, the adoptive mother who abandoned Amy a year ago. Carla threatens to call the police, and Meghan realizes that Carla has become involved with her ex-husband. Meghan says that Paul’s temper and mood swings may put Carla in danger. Meghan asks to meet her again in the park the next day.
Aaron and Pascale make love in a Prague hotel. He sees a ring on her necklace and, although she admits to being engaged to someone else, she explains that she is leaving her fiancé. They had been best friends but found they had no chemistry together. Aaron recounts how he once had great sex with his best friend. Hearing Aaron describe Carla, Pascale senses that both their hearts are with other people.
Back at the apartment, Carla tells Paul that she saw Meghan at the park. Paul becomes furious and believes that Carla has been taking Meghan’s side. He flings some magazines in fury, but apologizes to Carla. She sees that Meghan was right about his temper.
Craig signs over the last of the Brewster Group assets to raise cash. The company’s accountant suggests that Craig visit his father in prison. Later, Craig phones Sam from a payphone on the highway. He claims to have a meeting out of state.
With Brenda on her deathbed, Jenna asks about the identity of her father. Brenda doesn’t know. Jenna then asks if her mother wanted her when she was born. Brenda assures Jenna that she loves her and always treasured her as a daughter. Jenna doesn’t believe her. Brenda launches into a coughing fit and the doctors wheel her out. Jenna tears up.
Carla meets up with Meghan Phillips in the park, demanding to know what happened between her and Paul. Meghan describes the first time Paul hit her. They don’t see Paul secretly watching them from a bench in the park.
Aaron wakes up in the hotel but Pascale is gone. She left the book they were both reading on the pillow next to him. She inscribed the words “Go get her” inside the front cover. Aaron packs up his bags.
Will is about to board a military bus when he sees Craig at the base. Despite everything that’s happened to them, Will is the best friend Craig has ever had. Craig begins to tell him about the company being bankrupt, his financial difficulties and his feeling that Sam wants a divorce. “Maybe she would have been better off with you,” he sighs. Will advises Craig to tell Sam the truth about his problems.
At Brenda’s house, Samantha helps Jenna make funeral arrangements. Jenna finds a scrapbook that her mother put together which has documented her life for the past 22 years. Jenna breaks down because her mother did tell the truth about wanting her.
Sam returns to the loft and Craig apologizes for shutting himself off. He admits to their lack of money and how he visited Will. Sam tells him that she is pregnant, and Craig is ecstatic. Suddenly, Aaron arrives, fresh from the airport and looking for Carla. They explain that Carla now lives with Paul Phillips, who she has been dating. Aaron says that he’s home for good since making money selling cell phones in Prague. He intends to start an internet company.
Carla and Amy arrive home, and Paul accuses Carla of conspiring with Meghan because he saw them together in the park. He grabs Carla’s arm and she makes a comment about him hitting her. Carla locks herself in the bedroom and sobs as Paul pounds the door furiously.
PRESENT DAY – Sam continues her recollections on the video confessional, but she is only seen on tape. A thirty-eight year old Jenna turns off the video of Samantha, which was filmed at the Bedford High Class of 1986 Reunion. Jenna is in Brenda’s house. Marjorino enters and comments that Sam had no idea she would have been murdered the night she made that video at the reunion. Jenna had been expecting him. He was coming over to record her testimony.

JLRenheos, scroll up a few posts. Suzubeane posted a very detailed summary of last night's show.
adding to the list:
*that Amy calls Carla Mommy for the first time ever in front of Sam.
*that Sam and Craig can afford that apartment AND a car in NYC AND she's in med school.
*that Carla takes so many pictures of Amy every time they go to the park.
*that Detective Marjiano says "she was too young to die" several times each episode.
I guess we see how/when Carla turns into a bad ass. I guess she gets sick of being beat up on, so she decides to pull a gun on him (and maybe murder him??) instead of just leaving him. Makes sense to me
I don't know why I can't stop poking fun of this show. It's a shame about these things we are picking on b/c it does have some good storylines.
Anyone think Sam might have committed suicide?

Sam and Craig have a son and they name him Henry.
Will ends up dating Danny's sister (his friend in the Army who he is writing letters to).
Aaron gets married and Pascale (the girl he slept with last week) has a recurring role, so maybe that's who he marries???
Carla and the Detective have a past. They were both involved in a robbery together before he was a cop.
Jenna gets married.

I can't remember if I've posted here before or not. I thought last night's episodes was one of the better one's. I really liked how Carla helped get Amy away from her adoptive father. For some reason I thought she was going to shoot him before she left though.
I also wasn't sure how realistic their talk about the internet was at that time. It was my understanding that a "search engine" like they were talking about wasn't created until later on. I didn't even think that the internet was even thought of in that capacity. I could be wrong though. The first time I ever got on the internet (1996 & via AOL) there wasn't much to look at and it took an hour to pull up one web page.

I think the point is that Jenna is a washed up has-been by 2005. Did you hear them refer to her as being "big in her day?" Apparently, it is no longer "her day."
I have to say, this show had the fewest cheesy lines, and unbelievable twists. It actually had the most surprises, too. The scene at the end makes you wonder if the whole "Paul was abusive" premise was made up from the start. That would explain how he went from nice to abusive over night.
But I'm probably given the show and writers too much credit. ;).
(Pretty bad that I'm judging the quality of this episode by relative lack of cheese!)

I actually turned on my TV at 9:30 on Thanksgiving expecting to catch the last half hour of a new episode. I guess they rescheduled due to the holiday - like anyone would have cared!

I completely forgot to watch on Thanksgiving night. I'm glad that I didn't miss an episode!

This is what I read on TV Guide online:
Thus far, there is no word on whether Reunion will wrap up its central murder mystery before vanishing.
I will be SO MAD if they pull it before we get to see the rest of the mystery unfold, but I have a bad feeling.

I dunno - we're pretty good at predicting the predictable and re-writing cheesy plots and scripts here. We can probably do a good job wrapping the whole thing up right in this thread!

Perhaps, but it sure would be nice for Fox to break their own pattern of screwing people out of shows like this. I still never got to see the last episode of Tru Calling. Pretty bad show, but they cancelled it, said they would finish out the season....then pulled it before the very last episode in favor of a Simple Life repeat.

ITA! I used to watch the show, "Point Pleasant." They took it off, without any sort of ending, or resolution.

I knew this was going to happen before we found out what happened. Grrr! Hopefully they'll air the rest of the season and we can figure it out from there.

I watched that, too! I should know by now not to get too attached to Fox shows.
Fox is notorious for this it seems. They will just pull the show and that's it. I know we could probably write the last episode better, but then what would we make fun of in this thread? Geesh!

Heh - I wonder what kind of record that site (and others like it) have for saving shows. They're probably using our hits to market to their advertisers!
eta: check out Alias; more votes to cancel than to keep it?
Why, oh why, does Fox do this???

Do you think there is any chance that they would release the poorly performing show on DVD to make a profit that way, so those of us that got hooked would purchase the DVD to see how it all ends?

I read somewhere (sorry can't remember where) that they are releasing a DVD. However, they haven't filmed all the shows yet and I doubt they are going to. FOX is famous for pulling the plug on shows w/o tying things up for the viewers, so we'll be lucky (or maybe not ;) ) if we get to see the remaining shows they've filmed. I think they made it all the way to 1996.

I am so sad!!! I just called my SIL and she is freaking out!! We do get a new episode this week, so thats good. My DH heard on the radio it is getting pulled because they need space for American Idol.... if that is true I will boycot AI this season!

I'm not sure what's sadder - that the show got cancelled or that this thread has somehow grown to 22 pages. ;)
My DH heard on the radio it is getting pulled because they need space for American Idol Hmm - I'm not sure how this would be true. AI isn't on on Thursdays. Even the way things worked last year, it was Mon, Tues, and Wed. nights. And that was only for 3 or 4 weeks and not until March anyway.

I dunno - I didn't realize they hadn't finished shooting episodes for this thing. I guess I figured they had shot things out of order and finished everything up before airing. Otherwise, they would need to get everyone into their "present-day" drag too often!

Maybe they're moving other things around to make room for AI?Well, I'm pretty sure House is moving to Mondays at 8pm in January as a lead-in to 24. Bones is taking the post-AI slot of 9pm on Tuesdays. The only thing I think they'd need to put somewhere is That 70's Show on Wed. 8-8:30 which is the AI results show slot. I suppose we'll see though.
I'll check on that posts per page option. Thanks. :)

Read this on TV Guide.com:
As for exits, the Reunion will come to an end on Feb. 2, as producers work hard to tie up its sprawling murder mystery a few "years" ahead of schedule.
So we're going to get screwed out of episodes so they can hurry up and call it quits. I detest Fox.

As long as I get some closure....:p How sad is that? I just want some ending. I am convinved Sam killed herself, and I am dying to see how it all plays out.
My name is Heather, and sadly I am addicted to Reunion.

Cancel bad shows that I'm hopelessly and ridiculously addicted to. :D
At least they are going to give us some closure.

You made my day today by posting that we are going to get closure! At least we get something and they are not ending it abruptly! :)
I have a feeling they are going to say at the end of an episode "It was Carla in the Parlor with the wrench," flash on the screen right before the credits.

Of course I have lots to comment on.
Cheese factor tonight was maybe the highest it's been all season. Too bad they couldn't come out with a low cheese factor show right after the cancellation announcement. The announcement might have actually made a few extra people tune it
The timing is way off again. Sam just found out she was pg last year and this year Henry is 19 months old. Whoops!
Coffee shop is open (and very busy) on Thanksgiving day? Whoops again!
That's a lot to happen in one night of that year
Carla's speech, the music playing, the camera panning....great moment...I was so moved
I did like that they took a look at the Detective's life. And the Jenna Hollywood marriage thing is oh so true (cough Jessica/Nick, Brad/Jen, etc.)
I think this show has some great storylines. Too bad it's so cheesy. I will be watching unil Feb. 2nd.

The big cheese-factor moment I notice in every episode is at the very beginning when they play a song during the opening scene. It always seems like they just went to the top 40 list from whatever year and chose THE MOST POPULAR SONG, so the episode starts out
