I was just curious what diaper pails everyone has to help me decide what I should register for. Anyone willing to give recommendations or ones to steer clear of?
(I know there use to be a thread over in WC, but thought I would start a new one here!) :)

I have the diaper champ and I like it so far. Never uses any other system so I can't compare. But I picked that one because it uses regular trash bags.

I registered for the Diaper Champ based on recs at WC. We got it as a gift at our shower, but obviously have not used it yet. It seems relatively simple though!

diaper champ here (for the disposables we use on occasion). bought it because the genie uses special bags and i didnt want to have to buy a special accessory for something that is basically a glorified garbage can. the champ takes regular garbage bags so i chose that one.

We registered for, and received the Diaper Genie. However, despite hundreds of thousands of dollars of higher education, neither me nor my DH could ever get the thing to work right. So we gave up and bought a Diaper Dekor. It does an okay job controlling the odor and I like that you step on a pedal to open it, so you can keep one hand on the baby and hold the diaper in the other hand and still throw a diaper away.

We received a Diaper Genie and since it was free (with numerous refills of both infant and toddler refills) we use it. It does a pretty decent job with the smell. We are still using up the infant refills but once you start solids you are supposed to move to the toddler refills b/c they supposedly block odor better.
For us the refills have lasted a long time, but we only use the genie for poopy diapers and put wet ones in the regular can (b/c we change diapers downstairs and just put the wet ones in the kitchen can that gets emptied nightly).

We have the Diaper Champ too. Although after DD's poops really started to stink, the champ smelled too, no matter how many times I cleaned it. I retired it and just use the regular trash since it goes out once a day anyway. I am going to bring back the Champ when #2 gets here since those newborn bf poops aren't so bad.
I liked the Champ b/c, like others mentioned, there were no special bags to buy. And it was pretty easy to use.

We have the Diaper Dekor here and while it is easy to use, it does not contain the odor that well. Also, you have to buy special bags while I believe the Diaper Champ takes regular trash bags.
We have the "new, improved" diaper genie, and it's so easy to use it's ridiculous! Playtex made huge strides in that department - according to BB many parents' biggest beef with it was not being able to figure out how to work the thing. Diaper Genie 2.0 is much, much better. It does use special film instead of plastic bags, but I think it does a great job of sealing the dipes into little sausages, and you don't go through canisters of it very fast. The genie's also big enough that it doesn't need emptying very often - and still we have zero stink thus far. I know BFed babes' dipes aren't supposed to be that bad, but hey, I can smell it when I take it off her, and I can't smell it after I genie it, or a week later when I empty the genie. :)

We have the dekor. It's ok. Now that Noah's eating mostly solids, his poop stinks, and the dekor doesn't contain it all that well. His room doesn't reek or anything, but there's a hint... The refills do last a long time (we're only on our 3rd box now and Noah's 14 months old) and I like that it'll become a "normal" trash can when we're done with diapers.

We LOVE our Diaper Dekor +!!! It is completely odor free, super easy to use, and has a very streamlined look.
All my friends complained about the Genie, so I tried the Dekor + and have been very happy with it. Not only do you not smell the diapers, the trash bag does not have that sickly sweet "baby scent" that some others do.
I highly recommend it.

My DH actually is the one who decided which to buy, after talking with his friends!
I liked the Champ, based on it takes regular garbage bags.
His friends told him NO WAY on the Champ...if he is the one who has to empty it and change the bag. Open that puppy and stink to high-heaven.
They all recommended the Genie to him, since each diaper is individually sealed - there isn’t the odor when you empty it like there is with the Champ.
Of course, are babes are here yet, but I assembled the Genie (its the Genie 2) and it looks pretty much like a no-brainer to use.

Another Diaper Champ user here. So far I like it, it doesn't smell too bad when I open it. I usually spray Lysol in it when I change the bag. It is easy to use and I like how it takes regular trash bags. When you open the Champ you can quickly lift the blue part and "clench" the bag shut so you don't have to smell it for too long.

Another user of the diaper champ. Pretty easy to use and we like that it uses regular diaper bags (I bought a box of 120 13 gal bags at Home Depot for $10). It doesn't smell when it's closed, and just hold your nose when you lift it to take out the old bag!

I too used my diaper champ up until DS was about 17 months old then in the garbage it went. No matter how many time a day i washed and scrubed that think it alwasy smelt and i was tires of cleaning it and i was most definatly tired of his room smelling like dirty diapers.
Now i just throw them is the regular garbage and the poop diapers go right out to the garbge outside

We have a Diaper Dekor and we haven't even opened it! DD is 5 1/2 months old. I have a feeling we'll never open it. We take out the trash all the time and the thought of poopy diapers just sitting around for more than a day is just not our cup of tea. I'd much rather just take the trash out than deal with a diaper genie type thing.

Feeling about the same with our Champ. The only time I put a poopy diaper in it (FF baby) I could smell it later before I even went in his room. Can't deal. Now, we only put wet ones in it and individually ziploc the poopy ones. Total waste. We're contemplating buying a Genie II b/c soon there will be 2 little ones here with poopy diapers (doing a nanny share).

We have the genie, and have been happy with it so far (other than it can be a bit more difficult to use than the Diaper Champ.)
We stayed in a hotel that had the "Champ" and I thought it was the greatest thing. Until I read online that it becomes a fun toy for a toddler, putting toys in the chute and dumping them into the pail.
I figured I would just stick with the Genie until diapers get yucky...then I will do the outside trash for those.

I bought the Neat! diaper disposal system (http://www.safety1st.com/product.asp?productID=427) on thursday, and so far, so good. I'll give another review once more time has passed, but thus far, Noah's room doesn't smell like a dirty diaper! It's a bit harder to use than the dekor, but if it keeps the stink out, it's well worth it.
(FTR, Noah's 16 months old and fully on solids/soy milk. It's not a pleasant smelling combo ;))

yes, let us know! that seems to be a perfect solution for us since noa dumps all the toys/binkies/cell phones into the dekor, it doesn't look like she could open that. one thing i'm trying this week is sprinkling some arm & hammer baking soda cat litter deodorizer in there, we'll see what that does.

We have the Diaper Champ and so far I love it! It even keeps the smell from my 3 yr olds diapers from getting into the room which is no easy task ;) So far I haven't had any problems with Chase putting his toys in it but he'll throw away his sister's diapers for me since it's so easy to use. I also like the fact that you don't have to buy special trash bags for it. One less thing to worry about!

Ok, 1 week into the Neat! pail and I love it! It's kind of tricky to use, but not too bad. And his room doesn't smell like poop 24/7! It smells for a bit after you open the pail, but that's to be expected. It goes away quickly enough. Now, if we walk in his room at night and smell poop, we know it's fresh. ;) It does waste a bit of the refill if you don't use it just right, or open it when you're not throwing away a diaper, but it's worth it in my opinion not to have a stinky room!

We have the "Neat" one too. Her room smells good:-) I don't exactly like how you have to smush the diaper down in it, but you gotta wash your hands after diaper changes anyways. I can't find the liners at every store though - Walmart is the only place we have seen them consistantly. But all in all, its a good system. The most important thing to us is smell, and we have had none of that. It also doesnt smell when you change it. I was nursing DD to sleep the other night and DH came in and changed it, and I didn't notice a smell at all.

Our diaper champ is working pretty well so far (DS is 5 weeks old). He's breastfed exclusively, so his diapers don't exactly smell bad. So I can't really comment on odor containment. My only complaint is that once the bag starts to get full it gets harder and harder to get the diapers to go in and the "plunger" gets kind of stuck which is annoying. But I guess that's my fault for not changing the bag right away when it starts to stick.
I had a Diaper Dekor and that was great till DD started solids. After that, none of those garbage pails work anymore!

i used to love the diaper dekor, now i hate it. it used to be fine until my dd started solids, now i keep it in an extra bathroom with the door closed all the time. we have 2 and both of them are broken, the latches that keep the door closed broke off on both of them and the foot pedal broke on one of them. the customer service is foul, i requested parts over a month ago and the guy was so extremely rude and never sent the parts. whenever i get around to it, i'm gonna get something else.

We have the Diaper Champ. I like it for the most part. My complaint would be the same as a pp about once it gets full, the plunger(?) part is hard to turn and in reality, the bag really *isn't* full, it's just as far up as the can will fill, if that makes sense at all. But, that part is fine, because those diapers get pretty dang heavy-I can't imagine a full bag of dirty diapers! My other complaint is how freaking hard it is to open the damn thing. You have to pull it all the way back until it clicks where it actually sounds like you are breaking it. And THEN the blue part with the hole the diapers go through does not stay up, so you have to hold it up when you put a new bag in. DH gets frustrated with things easily, so I don't let him anywhere near it. lol I can't vouch for smell containment either since we are also bf'ing and the poops don't stink.:)

Yeah, we haven't "needed" it and we just take the trash out or knot the bag and it's fine :)

I got the diaper genie because
a) baby bargains said it was one of the best for stench control. we live in a condo and didn't want to haul the trash out every day.
b) the nearest BRU is about a 30 min drive, so we didn't have easy access to dekor/champ.
c) Target, where we had like $250 in gift certificates, only carried the genie.
We really dislike it. It's a pain to use, empty, and refill. And it doesn't seem to contain stink, and DS's EBF! I think we'll ditch it when we begin solids and DH will have to empty the trash often. I do not recommend it.

I use the diaper champ - really I can't complain...I use regular scented garbage bags and find that if I don't overload it with poopy diapers (she is formula fed and the smell is awful) I don't notice an odor. I empty it every week - however, mostly I change diapers downstairs so it isn't my primary way of disposal.

DS is 17 months old and we have been using the Neat since the start. I'm really happy with it. I don't notice any stench until we have to change it, since it's not sealed when you remove the bag the smell escapes until you tie a knot. At 17 months DS has some rancid poopies but once they are in the Neat, there is nothing to smell. You can find refills at BRU and Walmart but Walmart's price is about 75 cents cheaper.

Okay...
I live in a apartment, share the bedroom/nursery with DS and have no outside receptacle to drop the trash into daily (and God Forbid DH shlep it all the way to the compactor room daily  ). A stinkless diaper pail is of vital importance! lol
DS is now on solids and the Diaper Dekor is no longer working well. I noticed that my friends has the same broken flap on it as mine - must be a design flaw.
Anyway...should I get the Neat system or Genie? I've always heard horrible reviews of the Genie.
ETA: The Dekor was perfect for when he was BFd, since those diapers are odorless compared to solids diapers. ;)
ETA#2: I do not care about price at all! A room that doesn't smell like poop is worth top dollar! :D

we have the diaper champ and like it overall... when we started to get some smell escaping... i started to take the really smelly diapers and fold them up and then spray the outside of them with roomspray before throwing them in the champ.. so they are like little sachets :p ... i think it combats the poopy smell somewhat without making DD's room smell too strongly either way.. :) this is the spray i use... its fruity and sweet and not too strong...

Back with an update!
I bought the Safety 1st neat! system at Wal-Mart and am very impressed. My son eats a lot of solids (fruits, veggies, chicken, cereals, formula and BM) so his poop is frighteningly stinky. Yet I had a weeks worth of dirties in my neat! and even with my nose inches from the pail I couldn't smell a thing.
Easy to assemble, cheap refills, no big deal to push it into the pail - the 2 extra seconds it takes is more than worth it since its odor-free.
Highly recommend it! :D

DS is 14+ months old now and all solid foods, and I am still a HUGE fan of our Neat! System - it really does contain the stink, which is important because the nursery is in our bedroom and the windows don't open to air it out. If we had a stinky diaper pail in there, it would be a nightmare!

We are getting a Diaper Champ. Dealt with a Diaper Genie of all places at a daycare center (where it filled up after one round of diaper changes) and hated it with a passion. Like that the Diaper Champ doesn't require special bags, just regular trash bags. For really stinky diapers will use Diaper Sacks and than the Champ since we will be living in an apartment and it will be winter time and don't want to have to trek across a parking lot in the middle of a winter storm to toss bags all the time.

For those of you who have a brand name diaper pail (diaper genie, or diaper champ or anything else), is it *really really* worth it, or would you say that any old plastic trashcan with a lid could do?
Sophia
09-12-2006, 09:47 AM
Actual diaper pail, especially one designed to contain stink. A diaper pail is not something I would try to scrimp on. You really will need the stink protection later. I had a crappy diaper pail with no stink protection for my older two (you stepped on a foot pedal and the lid opened) and the room always reeked. I used small scented bags to contain the stink, but it didn't help enough. That was before the Diaper Genie and other fancy diaper pails came out.
Still loving the Diaper Champ. I saw white/pink ones at Target a week or two after we bought the regular white/blue one and was bummed till DH pointed out the pink version is smaller. When her poops get stinkier I'll wrap the diapers in those scented bags before tossing them in the Champ.

I don't have a diaper pail and have never missed it. My son is almost 2, so obviously he has been eating solids for a while. I just put a diaper in a diaper sack. If it's just pee diapers, I put a bunch in one sack. If he has a smelly one, the sack gets knotted up and next time we go somewhere, I drop it in the trash on our way out. (Our trash cans are next to the garage.) I have a hook hanging on the wall next to the changing table, so I just hang the sack on there. It's in the corner, so it's not really noticible.
It hasn't really been an issue at all.
Edited to say: I just wanted to throw this out there in case someone didn't want a diaper pail, to show an alternate way of doing things.
I think it definitely depends on where you live and how frequently you would take the garbage. Before we had DS, we lived in an apt in NYC which was literally next door to the incinerator room -- we would have just opened our door and been able to dump the diapers down the chute, never to be smelled. Now with DS we're in a house, and it's a pain to have to take the garbage outside. So...for us the pail is a necessity. We had the Dekor initially, but the seal broke and once DS's poops started to smell it really wasn't working. A regular pail certainly wouldn't have worked (except maybe with those special bags Steph talked about but I don't know what those are :o ). We now have the Genie and it works great with even the stinkiest poo. And I only empty it once a week, the night before garbage day.

The Diaper Champ worked wonders for us until DD started eating solids. When her poop started smelling it did not work at all. You'd walk into her room and all you could smell was POOP.
We switched to the Diaper Genie and it definitely keeps the smell down.

I am in the same situation as a lot of you have been...
DS is almost 11 months and eats mostly solids and 4 formula bottles a day. His poop reeks and the champ isn't working at all anymore.
SO...After being at a friends house who had NO poop smell in her son's room, I felt like running to the store to get a Genie myself. But when I got there, there were 2 choices and I didn't know what to do (literally, I stood there for about 20 minutes trying to figure it out and I know DH was really irritated!) We ended up buying the new Diaper Genie II to but I haven't read anything about it. My thinking was that they probably improved it based on feedback from parents, but who knows if it really is better than the original Genie.
Any feedback about the Diaper Genie II? The one thing I wondered about is that with the old Genie there is a stage 2 liner that is supposed to contain the toddler poop smell (and my friend's house is evidence of that!) But with the new genie there is only 1 kind of bag. Does it still contain the smell? Please HELP! Should I keep the Genie II or return it and go back to the original? TIA!

We got the Diaper Dekor and it sucks once the diapers start to really smell (when you start solids). So ours now sits in the garage instead of in DS's room. I didn't see the need to buy another brand but the Diaper Genie sounds like it's the best for smelly diapers:)

We have the diaper champ and love it. DS is 10 mos old and we haven't had a problem. We use cheapo scented trash bags in it and Lysol it out every time we change the bag - haven't had a stink problem. It's nice to not have to buy "special" bags or odor things like you do for the Genie.

Hi! I did a search for information on the Diaper Genie II and haven't really found anything about it. I am specifically looking for feedback from parents who have used the Diaper Genie II. I read through the thread about diaper pails in general and posted there, but haven't had many responses with regard to the DGII.
Does anyone have it? Do you like it? Does it keep your DC's room smelling poop free? Thanks! DS is almost 11 months and on solids and formula.

Well....I'll let you know. I just bought one. DS "played" with my Diaper Dekor too much and the drop down slot became permanently opened...hence smelly.
I was just going to pick up a new one, but saw this one. And since the seal is out of DS's reach, I decided to give it a try.

Great, Thanks Jilly! We bought one but after rethinking it I am going to wait until I hear a little more about whether the Genie II is worth it or if I just need to immediately walk the poop dipes down our 3 flights of stairs and put them directly in the outside trash. What a pain! I am crossing my fingers that you have something good to say about the genie!

I'll let you know too! I just bought one also.
I have the Diaper Genie before this new "II" model, and it works fine for smell (though I notice that the plastic seems to keep some of the smell...after a while, I can't get it out, so I buy new ones...sad, yes!)
Anyway, I bought the II since I was sick of the twist & stuff that you have to do with the other Genie. So far, it looks good, but I will tell you this: DD is 19 months, and figured out how to open it and stick her hand in the opening. I am just waiting for toys to figure out how to get in there at some point. (This was the reason I didn't go for the Diaper Champ...while easy, I could imagine having to fish toys out of the stinky diaper mess.) So this may be an issue with Genie II also (at least with Genie I, the toy would be in its own part of the "sausage." But no toy ever made it there.)

Oh gosh, Koala_Gurl, I hope DS doesn't figure it out.
Luckily, he never sent toys down the shoot, he just liked the sound the flaps made on the Dekor. So I'm hoping he won't be as interested in this one.
Abby
As for how it's going...the room definitely smells fresher so far. Of course, it's an easy comparison, since our Diaper Dekor had pretty much become just a regular trash can. Every time we'd open it to drop a diaper in, we'd be greeted with such a lovely scent.
3 flights of stairs!?! I'd definitely say that it's worth it. After our Dekor went bust, I thought I could just walk the ten steps down the hall to the garage...ummm too much effort. ;) Plus then DS wants to play in the garage, yada yada.
BTW...I just got mine on sale at BRU and used a $3 coupon from the mailer to boot. A deal!

jilly Thanks for your quick review!
For the last few days I have been throwing the pee dipes in the champ (which reeks when open, but amazingly enough doesn't smell at all when closed) and walking the poop dipes down (yes, 3 flights) when we go out. It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be since we leave the house to run errands at least twice a day usually. The one day we didn't leave in the afternoon I wrapped the dipe in a grocery bag and left it on the outside porch until DH got home and then took it down.
Anyone else have anything to say about the Genie II?

Maybe I'm just super lazy, but I can't imagine making special trips to the trash for poopy diapers. :) If I have stink issues I'll just wrap the poopy diapers in one of those Diaper Duck bags before I put them in the Champ.

I wouldn't trade the Champ for anything. It's on the 2nd floor so all nighttime diapers go in there, poopy diapers I put in a diaper sack and than toss. Downstairs diapers hit the trash can, if they smell I diaper sack them first as well. We take our trash out almost everyday.
I got a Safety 1st Neat! pail based upon some recommendations I got from people who had also tried the Champ and Genie.

I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but the reviews that I got were that once DC starts eating solids nothing really keeps the smell out, but out of all of them, this one does the best job. It does have special bags, but it seems like they may last for a while since it doesn't sausage roll each diaper individually. They're a little hard to find, even though I can find the refills everywhere. I got mine from KBToys.com for $25.

After agonizing over which diaper pail for no less than 9 monhts, I finally went to get the Neat! one for DD as we're starting solids this weekend. BRU told me it was discontinued! Anyone know if they are full of malarky?
If not, I guess I'll go with DGII, now.

Why would they discontinue that one and make a new one that won't be as stink proof? That just seems dumb...

Our Diaper Genie broke last week - the top snapped off. We'll limp through and finish up the current liner before getting another one, or something else. I liked it alright, but there is definitely room for improvement.
What are you all using? Do you like it?
#2 is on the way and although he won't be terribly stinky for awhile, the volume of diapers is going to go way up!!!

We use the Safety 1st Neat Diaper Disposal System. It took me a few days to get used to using it, but I absolutely love it. It holds a ton of diapers and doesn't let the odor out at all.
Truth be told, though, I use it a lot less now that DS is older; dirty diapers are indeed smellier but less frequent. Now I'll often flush before I wrap the diaper up and toss it straight in the trash.

By the time DC2 came, we weren't even using the Genie anymore. It's easier just to throw them in the trash. I swore that I could smell dirty diapers that were in the Genie despite the odor control bags. Every time I'd go in the nursery I thought DS had pooped but it was just the Genie so it had to go.

I'm honestly a Diaper Genie fan. My only complaint is that that toddler liners (green) just can't handle the stinks that the infant liners (blue) can, so we've stuck to the infant liners. DD is 19 months old, and we still use the Genie.

We used the Champ until DD was about a year old. NOTHING could get rid of the smell. We switched to the original Genie (it was on clearance) and it works great. The Champ is now in DS's room. It will probably suffice until he is about a year old.

I'm still undecided between CD & Disposables (and probably will be for the next few months!), but need to get something to contain whatever I decide to do on the diaper front. The idea of wrapping a plastic diaper in more plastic (a la Genie/Dekor) does not make me too happy, so I am looking around for other options.
I noticed while shopping at BRU today that they had two new-ish charcoal filter diaper pails in stock -- the Clean Air Odor Free (quite a claim!) Diaper Disposal (http://www.learningcurve.com/product/detail/Y7010) by The First Years and the Touch Free Diaper Pail (http://www.gracobaby.com/catalog/product.aspx?modelNumber=2P01) by Graco. They both run on batteries (shame on Graco & First Years for not providing an AC Adapter option!), which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Does anybody have either of these pails? If so, which one do you have, and do you like it?

Honestly, I'd recommend skipping the diaper pail altogether. We had the Diaper Champ, and at first it worked well as far as containing the smell, but we had to empty it pretty frequently because the diaper changes are so frequent at that age. Around 3 or 4 months, the diapers started smelling worse and we had to empty it frequently because of that. By 5 or 6 months we were just tossing the diapers in the kitchen trashcan and emptying it daily or when it smelled (whichever came first).

We have the new Diaper Champ - so far, so good. We only have to change it twice a week since DD is in daycare. I am nervous though because I've heard once they start eating table food that the smell gets worse. It hasn't been too bad since she started purees.
Also a little nervous about what to do when we do have to empty the trash once the warm weather comes. We only have 1-2 black bags of trash a week. We live in a townhouse and have been okay putting a bag out on our back deck. Won't be able to do that in summer so we'll have to buy a trash barrel.

I'm trying to decide between the Champ/Genie/Dekor/Graco touch free pail. It seems like they have all come out with new versions lately - any recent reviews? The reviews on Babies R Us seem to be very mixed.
I think I'm leaning towards the Diaper Genie 2 but I'm not thrilled about the need to buy special bags. (but the Diaper Champ has gotten some pretty bad reviews)
Thanks!

We have the Diaper Champ and it's okay. Honestly I'd just use the trash can, but I like having something in DS's room to hold the diapers right away, instead of walking into the kitchen. At first I definitely noticed a smell. But, now whenever I empty it (which is about twice a week) I spray it with a little disenfecting spray, wipe it down, and sprinkle in some baking soda. Smell is gone! I like the Champ better than the Genie (which we had with DD) because I can use regular trash bags. And as long as I keep it cleaned, I don't notice any smell.

We have the genie II and it is ok, but I stopped putting poopy dipes in there at about 4 months of age (DD hadn't started solids yet). I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell and everytime I opened the lid of the genie to put a new dipe in, I could detect a poopy smell. In addition, emptying it when it had poopy dipes in there was disgusting, you have to open it up to cut the bag and tie the knots and I felt that a ton of smell leaked while doing this. Several day old poopy dipes don't smell good! So now we just put her poopy dipes directly into the outside trash can and use the genie for the wet dipes - no odor from those detectable. It's not too much of a bother as she generally only poops once a day.
I stock up on the refills when they are on sale. I bought 5 refills at Target when they were $2 off. The refills last a long time.

Anyone with a toddler and the Diaper Genie II?
Currently we have the Neat! system, which truly was awesome, but the safety 1st idiots decided to discontinue it (bastards) and we need something new for #2. (Speaking of which - if anyone has the neat pail and has any refills left for it - ebay, baby. They're selling for outrageous amounts there. I sold 2 and made enough for a new diaper pail!)
The genie II looks similar in design, but I'm wondering how it holds up to toddler poop stench. We had the dekor originally with Noah, and it worked great until he was on tons of solids and then the thing reeked. I couldn't tell if he had a poopy diaper or if it was just the pail stinking up his room.

We use the Champ and love it. It's on the second floor and takes both poo and pee diapers with minimal smell. It's only emptied every few days/once a week since many of his diapers go in the downstairs trash when I'm down there. Even with being emptied only 1-2 times a week it doesn't smell when closed. When the lid is up that's a different story.:p And the fact that it takes regular trash bags can't be beat.

We just moved to a multi-level house and I decided it was time to get a diaper pail. I ended up with the diaper genie 2. I love it. DD is 14 mos and has some major stinky poops. I put the dirty diapers in a disposable bag and then in the DG2. I have had it about a week and there is absolutely no smell.
When I was pg I was paralyzed by indecision on this purchase. I don't know what made me finally decide it was the DG2, but I'm really really pleased.

Ok, perhaps there is something wrong with me, but I'm having a tough time trying to figure out how to work the Diaper Genie II. mb1197 SIL has the diaper genie 2 and when we were searching for a diaper pail for DS that's the #1 complaint we heard from MIL, that it was super hard to get the diaper in... That's what steered us clear from the genie, got the champ and I think the opening might be wider so it's easy to get the diaper in :)

We have the DGII and are pleased with it. The reason for pushing down so hard is thats the "odor control". We never had a problem trying to squeeze nasty diapers down there, we just roll them up and use the tabs to keep it shut, put it in and push. If something were leaking out I'd just grab a wipe and push down with that.
DS now only poops every 3-4 days and the smell is much worse. So far I haven't smelled them through the genie but I hear that eventually ALL diaper pails will fail when the poop gets bad enough. I figure if it comes to that we can just use the genie for wet diapers and bag and dispose of the dirty ones immediatly.
The only thing I don't like about the DGII is the refills. But my friend got the Champ and stopped using it around 9 months due to smells. So I wasn't sold on it.

we still use the Diaper Champ at 18 months, it gets used a bit less now that DS's crib is so low I can't change him in his crib anymore, so most diapers hit the trash in the kitchen, once the twins share a room with him will use it a lot more again. No smells from it though.

We use two Diaper Champs, one in each of the rooms. Pretty happy over all except for the fact that we haven't found a garbage bag that fix perfectly w/o being short or too long.
But the modification we made to ours has made all the difference and I share this with all who HATE the smell. In the pet isle of your supermarket, look for the cat litter deodorizers, like these (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750951&cp=2767033.2769041&utm_term=4888292&utm_medium=cpc&fbx=1&fbn=Brand%7CLittermaid&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2769041&f=PAD%2FBrand%2FLittermaid&utm_campaign=cat_litter_boxes&fbc=1&utm_source=google&parentPage=family&keepsr=1), that are little baggies with an adhesive backing. Pop two of these babies in the inside lid of the Champ and breathe fresh air for a while.

I got an e-mail from BRU about it and saw a commercial recently; I think it's new. I was curious too, as to how well it works.
FWIW, (for the purpose of this thread), I really like my Diaper Genie II. I was most concerned with the smell factor when choosing a diaper pail, and it really controls odors like I hoped it would. It's not hard to stuff the diapers down -- just make sure you wrap them up tight enough and it's a cinch. It gets a little tough when the pail starts getting full, but that can be solved easily by changing the bag. ;)

We have had the DGII for about a year and the smell definitely escapes once in a while. I've tried everything - spraying it with freshner, putting dryer sheets in the bottom, putting Glade stuff in there. I just hate the smell of air fresher combined with poop!

I registered for the Diaper Champ simply because it takes regular trash bags so that's what all my friends recommended, but I've decided that I hate the way it looks...what's up with making the handle, etc. pink or blue instead of making it all white??!!
Since the last post in this thread is 08 I thought I'd bump for any new items or additional recommendations aside from the Champ.

We have the Diaper Genie II Elite and the regular Diaper Genie II. They use the same refills (the blue ones.) I bought the regular (cheaper) Genie for our bedroom since DD sleeps in there at night. The differences are that the Elite has a foot pedal that opens the lid and it is taller so you dont have to lean over as much to put the diaper in. Also, when you put the diaper in, when you release the foot pedal the diaper automatically drops down into the pail and the lid closes. The regular Genie has a place where you push the diaper in with your hands, so it is not as easy. Both work well for smell, but DD is breastfed so she doesnt have super stinky diapers yet.
I like that I can buy the same refills for both. I get them at Walmart or order from Diapers.com. Have you checked the BRU store for the blue refills? Maybe they were just out that day? Seems odd that they have the older refills and not the newer ones!
I like the way both of them look, pretty sleek and clean. They dont scream baby, which is nice!

No, I only looked online so I guess they do carry them in the store? These are the only ones they have online, but I don't think these are the correct refills because it says it's for the "twistaway" Genie?

Just thought I'd input on the diaper Champ. I registered and recieved one for a gift, but shortly after we started using it something happened to the gasket part around the top, that made it impossible to turn to dump the diaper in, so we basically always used it as a lift off top. I just recently junked it and bought a simple (small) Cosco diaper pail for about $8 at BigLots - you step on the thing to open the lid and it has a place where you can put a deodorizing disc in the lid of it. Since my DS is a bit older (17 months) I don't relaly put him on the changing table much, but kind of have been changing him just where ever we happen to be, so most of his diapers are put in the kitchen or bathroom garbage -they all get emptied quite frequently.
I picked up the new diaper pail for the new baby coming, figuring, I'll most likely want one again. I was really disappointed in my Diaper Champ though!
