brklyn, your DD is ADORABLE! :) and the party looked fabulous, great job!!! I love your cake as well. Do you have a close-up pic. of it (if not, what's on it)? My dd's 2nd b-day is in a few months and I'm starting to plan for that now. TIA!

vjel & tgray99- Thanks for the compliments. I got her dress on http://www.shopbriarpatch.com/inbirtierdre.html

It was so beautiful in person and surprisingly not that expensive. Here is a close up picture from the website. The dress came with a number two as well as a number one to snap on the bow at the waist.

I am not sure if this has been posted here. I don't know how these people find me especially since we are doing a low key bday party at the park. I got this catalog called Birthday Express and they have a website

Birthday Express web site (http://www.birthdayexpress.com/bexpress/Default.asp)

I think the hardcopy of the catalog is easier to navigate and there is a whole section on First Birthdays. Lot of the stuff there I cannot seem to find on the web site.

I don't know about you guys but I am thinking of having a John Deere bday party myselF!

Love this thread! I'm doing a pink and brown theme party (I think we'll do it at home) for about 65 people in June. Any ideas for me? I already bought the paper to make the invitations - I'll take a photo this weekend and post.

Have you checked out the weddings threads? I know a lot of women were doing brown/pink themes so I bet you'd get some great ideas in there. :)

Our Party
Well, I am signing the contract on a banquet room at a restaurant by my home this week to hold DS's 1st bday party on his actual 1st birthday - yay!
The DRAMA  will be the guest list - I want to keep it as small as possible:
- DS's buddies & moms
- DH & my parents & siblings
- A couple close non-parent friends (like 2!)
This alone will be about 50 people right there...and I know DHs family will put the pressure on to invite this aunt and that cousin and these friends of theirs, but the ripple effect will make the head count too high. Ugh. Anyone else already stressing over this?
Question: I want to invite DS's buddies, moms & dads (though I havent met many of the dads) and think it would be rude to not invite the dads...but I have a feeling I will be asked not to, to make more room on the guest list for extended family. Do you agree with me?
Theme
I *love* the airplane theme at the beginning of the thread, but DH may insist on something 'sporty' (boooooo!). So we'll see.

Yes, I agree with you! If only myself and my son were invited to a kid's birthday on the weekend, we wouldn't go. At this age, anyways. Weekend time is special. Most dads WOH, so wouldn't they want to be with their kid on the weekend? Plus, I want to be with my husband. ;)

i'm doing a pink and brown theme as well, but adding her monogram (C) into the mix (similar to miasmom). as kimthebride suggested, i'd check out the wedding threads. i got a lot of ideas there...cakes, invitations. i found a pink/drown dress (2 dresses, couldn't make up my mind) for her to wear (by Baby Nay) and might break down and purchase a brown tutu with a pink flower for her second outfit.

for favors, i've thought about having a candy buffet with pink and brown (chocolate) candies so they can help themselves, but it might be too much like a wedding. plus, i'm not sure if the parents would really appreciate an all you can eat sugar-fest for their kids. but those neopolitan candies would be perfect for the theme as well....

i was able to pick up some great favors at Target last night. their $1 section was discounted to 4/$1, so i picked up all of the girls favors (mostly pink items).

you'll have to post pictures of invitations when you're done. my friend is working on my DD's, but here's what we're using as inspiration:

great minds think alike!!! My DD is actually turning 2 in May but I still come in here to look for ideas. I also decided I'm doing a pink/brown theme but don't know what to do outside of that! lol Will have to check out the Wedding threads now, thanks to everyone who suggested that.

club924, I am using the same paper for my DD's invites! :) I've made a few already (though I haven't figured out the wording yet so have only worked on the outside part of invite). I'll be back to post a pic. in a few...
Also, are you having boys at your party? What are you doing for favors for them?

I think we're doing the exact same party - I'm adding a "J" to everything. Her birth announcements and thank you cards had the "J" so I told my mom that the initial was Jessica's "signature thing". She cracked up. We're inviting about 60 adults and 30 kids - but I'm hoping I have 60 people in total attend.

Invitations
My invites are brown square card stock with a smaller pink square in the center with the details - I'm fooling around with embellishing them with the "J" and/or a pink/pink & Brown bow. I did a prototype - but still not set on the embellishments. I bought the "J" paper shaper online that punches out little Js - it was like $6.00!
http://www.createforless.com/InterchangeData/images/2/200204172300482b2002-0202-0738.jpg

I bought coordinating paper - similar to the paper you posted above (different shades of pink and pink & brown) to punch out the Js and stick them to the invites, the goodie bag, put on the tables as confetti... they're going everywhere.

Favors
I'm going to do pink and brown bags for favors - I've already ordered some books that were on sale at American Girl - (I think the link was posted on this thread earlier) - girls will get a pink bag - boys a brown. Need to start collecting items for the bags - I'm also doing CDs in the bags - compiling the song list now. Definitely adding bubbles to the bags!

Coordinating everything
I think we're going to do the party in the house. I need to have tables brought in and balloons. The tablecloths, plates, cups, utensils and balloons will all be pink and brown.

Cake
I think I'll order a cake in the color theme. Aside from that I plan to bake cupcakes with pink icing and a brown "J" on each one and cookies with the same idea.

Food
We're going to have it catered - eggplant parm, quiches, egg salad/tuna salad finger sandwiches - that kind of stuff.

Entertainment
So far I have a group lined up that does music/singing - 2 women - one plays the guitar and they both sing all the kid songs... I saw them at a 2nd birthday party recently and booked them. Was thinking about having a person who does balloon animals - not sure yet.

Dress
I haven't even looked yet

Am I forgetting anything? I feel like I'm planning a wedding! Any advice would be great!

here are a couple of the pink/brown invites. I actually got the invite idea from a scrapbooking site I frequent.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6dc31b3127cce97359cf7f82700000016108AbMWbJu2Zs0

the belly belt (I think that's what it's called) slides off so you can open up the invite where all the party info will be.

yep, boys will be at the party and i'm still brainstorming on the favors. DD's bday will be at a public library (they have a private room), so part of their favor for each child will be a book (only thought it would be appropriate since the party will be at a library). i have books for the girls (Angelina Ballerina book), along with other things that i'll be adding to the bag (items i bought from the $1 section at Target, candy). i am now looking for books for the boys (age 3-8) and have been looking on ebay. i just bought 10 books to be used for favors for the little kids (under 2 years old). I've looked at orientaltrading.com and found a few things that i like (inflatable swords, inflatable basketballs, candy). i've given up the idea that i will find anything "pink and brown" for the boys.

booeyj2 - can't wait to see pixs of your invitations...i'm sure it's going to look awesome! especially if your sister is making them :)

jessiesmama - where did you buy the alphabet paper puncher? too cute! and where did you find brown favor bags? i've looked everywhere, and they only have brown, grocery bag color. i think you've got everything planned...it does feel like planning a wedding. we have over 100 people on our guest list! yikes! i have some pixs of pink/brown cakes that i found on a wedding thread and will post later (also saw a cute cupcake idea like the one you're doing). as for dresses, check out Baby Nay...they have a chocolate/pink fabric that's really cute.

vjel - did you shop around for the paper? i was trying to look for a site that had a reasonable price...i haven't ordered my paper yet, but is it heavy cardstock? when i think of scrabpook paper, i think it would be light weight.

booeyj2 - that's a lot of great ideas!

pink and brown i was thinking of the same combo for dd's 2nd birthday, i can't believe how popular it is. i'm thinking of a pink and brown puppy theme, not sure how to incorporate the puppy part. i found a really cute vintage style puppy dog with brown spots and a pink birthday hat and so far that's my inspiration. i think someone in my area does 'puppy parties', where they bring a bunch of puppies to your party and the kids can play with them, still not sure how i feel about that though.

club924, I shopped around a little bit for the paper. I bought the paper pack b/c I couldn't find anyone locally (I wanted to see the pic in person before buying to make sure they were thick enough) who sold the individual sheets I wanted, namely the paisley/stripe/dot prints. I ended up buying the 24 pack of paper at a scrapbook store here for $15.49. I was seeing the same prices online but w/ shipping cost, it would've been 20 bucks.

The paper is actually pretty thick b/c it's double-sided. It's definitely good for invites. If you can find somewhere to buy the individual sheets you want, it'll prob be about 60 cents/sheet. If not, the pack of 24 sheets (12 different patterns, 2 of each) will run about $15. I have to say that some of the patterns on the pack are big, too big for an invite IMO so I'm not using them. I don't have to make that many invites though and I'm sure could use the extra paper for something else. HTH!

Cute invites, I like 1 and 4 best. Can you try to punch the pink paper with the "J" cutout (I think you were using a punch) so the brown shows through the pink? Maybe at the bottom or top, depending which direction the punch goes? You might have to enlarge your margin but I think that might be cute too.

I would vote for #1, then number 4, but also like the idea of a J cutout... Or, you could cut a piece of vellum over the entire invite part with a color on color J (does that make sense? Let me see if I can find an example) ... then you could use the bows AND the J

Ok, I can't steal the pic...but

We're thinking of an "m" theme for Macy's party. We'd like to do a lower case m though, I think it would be cute to set out bowls of pink m&m's and stuff. Plus, we want to make a m shaped cake, and lower case seems easier.
Anyone know where I can get a "m" punch? I looked at the website with the punches listed on the last page, but I could only find capital punches.
I love the pink/brown thing going on in here too! I was thinking just pink, but I may throw some brown in there too after seeing all the great papers and stuff with brown.

No problem! What size did you order?

i ordered the "small" size (6 x 3 1/2 x 6 1/2). i figured the smaller the bag, the less things i need to put in it to make it look full.

jessiesmama - great job on the invites. i really like the invite with the "J" cut out. how about putting the "j" cut out right at the top (middle)..right about your first line of text? thanks for the link to the paper puncher. i think i might have to order it :D

chylynn - i bought DD's Baby Nay dress from Snap Dragons Baby (http://snapdragonsbaby.com/baby_nay.html/) in Jan when they had an addtl 15% off their sale items. Got this dress for a $30:

Okay, I had an eye-opening conversation with a friend recently that made me aware of just how many 1st bday parties we will be invited to this year! I know I'll be invited to at least 5 within a month of each other, and those gifts will add up fast.
Since this can get quite expensive, what are some great not-too-costly gifts a 1 year old would love? I'm thinking under $25, max.
I did a general Xmas age-appropriate thread a few months ago, but I figured this more wallet-friendly inquiry would be well suited here.

I'm thinking off the top of my head:
- Wooden puzzels $5-15 (Carter's carries these & you can use coupons there)
- Fisher Price Barnyard Animals Carousel $15
- Book collections (Barnes & Noble usually has these in the sale section)
- Stacking blocks

Kim I just read the Pat the Bunny series to Mary Kate today and it really held her attention! I guess because they were interactive. She also likes the Touch and Feel books too. So if you are going the book route....thought I would suggest something like these.

Hmmm... Target has a great section of no-name toys for around $20 ... The only one I can remember off the top of my head is the remote control 3-wheel motorcycle (atv maybe?) that I got for a 4 year old. It was the hit of the party, and 2 other moms there had to run out and get one for their sons (dh's friends are all into dirtbikes) ... BUT, thats where I usually head first for kids parties... that, and if you are a member of samsclub/bj's/whatever... sometimes you can find cool stuff there for kids too (I tend to buy stuff as I see it, and save it for when its needed)

tgray99 I absolutely LOVE everything mia's mama did, I'm stealing a bunch of her ideas;) But she used a capital M and we are hoping for a lower case...we'll have to see what I can find.

TonyaI actually scoped out Archiver's when we were there last, and all they have is a die cut that is called Collegiate, which is all capital letters, they are a good size, but not quite the font I was hoping for. They did have some other letters, but they were really small, about an inch, and I sorta want invites like mia's mama made. I called Scrapbook Superstore today to see what they have, sounds like they have Collegiate too, but the lady had some other ideas for me, so I might have to stop in there.

MrsChappy oooh! I love those personalized m&m's! I may have to order some:)

Sara - they had the lollipop one too, maybe that would be cute? The other thought I had is Tonya bought the QuickKutz thing, maybe they have a cute font you could buy/use? And Kimberly has the Sizzix - maybe she has a font that you could use?

Yah, I was thinking the Lollipop. And that was close to 2". But maybe not for lowercase...Right now, I don't have any fonts that would be large enough for the Quickutz, but Kimberly is definitely an option!!

We booked the bday room, so now my task is to make a Tuscan-style banquet room look birthday-boy happy. :)

I think I'll get a ton of balloons to float along the ceiling to brighten the place up (one wall is all windows, so there is light, but the colors of the room are blah). The meal is buffet, so I'll have the regular restaurant dishes out for parents and I'll buy some cute party plates, napkins & cups for the kids.

DH and I aren't into themes - and if I say "theme" he'll say "SPORTS", which I am so tired of already. Sooo...I am thinking more along the line of colors.

Maybe a bright blue/light blue or green/blue combo for the invites & decor. I love jessiesmama's invites, I could make something like that with the Comic Sans font and punch a "T" at the top, maybe punch the date at the bottom since the party is on his actual bday??

Here are some things I love so far:

http://www.1stwishes.com/Content/ProductImages/200/E85371.jpg

Anyone have any ideas/inspiration for me? I need to brighten up this party room, but don't know what to do for centerpieces (5 round tables or 6 rectangle), can't use confetti.

Oh, and inspired by this:
http://www.jordanmarie.com/jord/images/birthdayboy_M.jpg
I think I am going to buy a polo-style onesie, then bring it to the mall to have it embroidered with:
- his name across the back, sports jersey-like
- "1" under his name
- on the front "birthday boy" arching over the pocket, with a "1" on the pocket

Kim That is the same "theme" we are going with for my son's Bday. I fell inlove with the colors. I have to keep it simple b/c we are going to roll right into DH's 30th bday party from DS's 1st bday party so I wanted something that could carry over - decor wise not so much with the theme. I can still use the balloons etc later that day for DH's party.

Invitations are going out Monday. I am still triying to determine what time is a good time. So, what time is a good time?

Menu, I am also having a bit of trouble with the menu. We are doing a crawfish boil that afternoon and most people will be staying for DH's crawfish boil afterward - plus I'll need some regular food items for people (like myself) who don't eat crawfish etc.

Any suggestions?

How about using some larger plastic trucks (dump trucks etc) as center pieces, you could tie ballons to it or put something fun inside if there are other kids (bubbles, animal cracker boxes etc.). I saw some at BJs Warehouse the other day that were in fun bright colors (they might have been beach toys).

Ours is a brunch from 12-4...I find that with my friends that's the timeframe usually best for playgroups, when the kids are awake to be involved, so I went with it.

Games to Play?
At my friend's daughter's party they played Pass The Parcel (an english game), which was easy and entertaining for the kids...but are there any other games a group of 1 year olds can really play??

i wanted to order the size "small" bags, but they didn't come in pink or brown in that size. i didn't want to get the next size up b/c they're too big and i would've had to put a lot more favors in them, plus they were more expensive. luckily, michael's was having a sale on their craft bags (3/$1) and i bought 60 white bags (size is
5 width x 7 tall) and will put Confotti stickers on them (saw another mommy do this for her DD's party) and tie the handles with a pink/brown/white ribbon i also found at michael's for $1 a roll. i will try and post a pix when i get all my materials.

have you bought/found any bags?

I went to the Hallmark store in my office building with my request. I told the owner what I was doing and she said she'd call the companies that she deals with to see if anyone has a chocolate brown bag (the pink one is no problem - as you know). She said she'd call after Valentines day. I'll check in with her today and see if she's made the calls.

I like your idea of embellishing the white bag with the pink and brown ribbon!

Why is this so hard?

We recently went to a Baby Einstein themed party, it was so cute - the cake was in the shape of the caterpillar (several small round cakes) and the favors were one of the toys with the plastic chewie paws.

We're doing Harry Potter, downloaded the font (from dafont.com I think) and mimicked the style of the poster with the owl bringing Harry the Hogwarts letter for our invitation. Diddams has all the Harry Potter party stuff half off so that worked out. We got the confoti for the buffet table, my mother's already planning to swipe all the pieces for her scrapbook

Got lots to do today so I'll try and come back with pics after!

So far we are serving cupcakes (white, pink & green frosting), M&Ms (easter pack), hot dogs (pink?), smartfood, veggie platter (brocoli, cauliflower, cucumbers), soda (sprite, rasberry gingerale, fresca). I would love to hear if anyone has other ideas.

Thanks in advanced. :D

We did a cowboy theme for DS' first. I made bandanas for the kids and they wore them along with straw cowboy hats I found at a discount store...they looked really cute! We had a cake with horses on top and did the whole streamers thing in the party colors too - red and blue.

We had a memory table where we had pics of him over the course of his first year - everyone seemed to enjoy that - especially relatives that weren't able to see him often.

I made DS his own personal little cake (yellow cake with whipped creme icing since we don't let him have a lot of sugar) with a "1" candle on top. His cake was about 3" by 3" and that really was all he needed for photo opps and making the ceremonious mess...LOL! He did eat a little bit of it though...but mainly it was a mess! To protect his clothes, I cut head and arm holes out of a trash bag and placed that over him while he ate...worked wonders and saved me from having to scrub cake and whipped creme off his clothes.

I'll dig up pics and post them later. ;)

There are some awesome ideas in here! Everyone is so creative!

I'm struggling with this right now because we live in a tiny one-bedroom and have to go "out" for DS' party. I'm just not sure which direction to go. We could do Gymboree, but to be honest, there won't be that many kids there and the ones that will be invited are all different ages. I'm getting info on Dylan's Candy Bar, but I'm pretty sure it'll be out of my price range, as is the Central Park Zoo. I guess worst case scenario, we could just go to John's Pizzeria by our place- I mean, who doesn't love pizza??!!

jrdhbunny - Or you could do something just IN Central Park somewhere or a playground near you. That's what my sister did for her DS's 2nd birthday - just the little playground around her corner (near Lincoln Center). It worked out very well. That was September, too, which can be iffy like April might be (for your DC). Her son's 1st birthday they did in their tiny NYC apartment - for the 2nd, we went outside and around the corner. :)

My sister's and my birthday is in July and we grew up in Queens; we always had birthday parties in a nearby park.

Looking at the invitations again, I thought maybe we'd use it for her birthday as it kind of "goes" with the invitation. What do you all think? Do I feel a Polka Dot theme comin' on? :D The party will be at our neighborhood clubhouse, which has a pool. There will be swimming, I'm sure. I think this outfit will be cool enough for our hot summer, but it's cute too. Maybe I'll even get her an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, polka dot bikini! Okay, may not too itsy bitsy. ;)

Loving the new ideas...we also are going with a pink and green color scheme. I need to get to Target...That's in addition to our "storyhour/book" theme.

Here's a question for you: I'm trying to decide how to incorporate the mom's and babies from my new mom's group. I'm not sure I want to invite them to the Sunday party with family etc. One I'm not sure if they would feel obligated to invite us to theirs, two would they want to come on a weekend?, three does it seem like I'm fishing for gifts and four, that's a lot of almost one year olds in the house, along with other kids/parents.

So as a compromise I was thinking of having a playgroup at our house for those moms/babies during the week. I would have snacks and maybe some little favors for them. Not a big deal. But I wouldn't want them to bring her gifts. What do you think of this? Should the invite just be an e-mail so it is really casual? Help please!

twinnyme- The park thing is a great idea- thanks! I did think about Central Park, but I thought you have to get a permit if you have a gathering of more than a certain number of people. But maybe not- I'll have to check it out.

ETA- I just found the area about permits and you have to get one for any party larger than 20 people. Still doable though.

ETA2- alienhost- are all of the babies the same age? Could you do a themed playgroup where all the moms participate- meaning that it becomes a kind of pot-luck group party?

Those invites are adorable LIZNKEITH!!! I like the outfit, too. Our party is in 3 weeks, so I know we will be keeping DD is long sleeves. ;)

jrdhbunny~ I for one LOVE pizza! With lots of adults attending, I think a pizzeria is always a good place for a get-together. :) However, if the weather is cooperating, a park can be loads of fun. Good luck with your decision. I don't know NYC well enough to make a suggestion.

alienhost~ I invited all members of my playgroup (only 5 moms right now) but I know them very well and we exchange small gifts for christmas. I hope they don't go too far out with birthday presents, but I had every intention of reciprocating if we are invited to their parties. This was an issue for me at first, but I realized they are close enough that it really isn't. One thing you could do is write "your presence is requested, but presents are not suggested" or something like that on their invitations. One member of our playgroup is having a "birthday luncheon" the next time she hosts for her son's b-day. Great way to include everyone without the big deal of a party. To invite them, just announce the week before you host that is will be your DD's b-day celebration and no gifts are required... HTH.

BooeyJ2~ YAY for pink/green parties!!! I can't wait to see what you and your sisters come up with. You all are so creative! I may "steal" an idea or two as you really have fabulous taste.

jmvan74~ Thanks for that input. Sounds yummy! A plate of watermelon, pineapple and honeydo melon... :)

I finished ours today with some speckled vellum and ribbon and am fairly happy with them.

jrdhbunny-We had a bridal shower for one of my friends in Central Park and it was one of the best things we did. It was a blast and the park is such a fun setting for a party. It was easy to get a permit. You need to specify the exact location, like "Lake Pavilion by 67th street" or whatever but it is easy. I do recommend that you start it early because it took the Parks Commission three weeks to confirm our permit. I think the fee was $35. Also make sure you have the permit with you on the day of the party. We were asked to show our permit twice.
When I lived in the city, I used to walk through Central Park and see parties going on all the time.
I think John's Pizza is cool too. Maybe that can be your "rain date" spot.

If anyone is still looking for outfits for your DD's, I was in Children's Place yesterday and saw some cute pink/green stuff.

on the casual side for $14.50:

dressier for $24.50:

Over the weekend I bought this outfit at Children's Place:
http://www.childrensplace.com/www/b/TCP/images/styles/446353_m.jpg
Looking at the invitations again, I thought maybe we'd use it for her birthday as it kind of "goes" with the invitation. What do you all think? Do I feel a Polka Dot theme comin' on? :D The party will be at our neighborhood clubhouse, which has a pool. There will be swimming, I'm sure. I think this outfit will be cool enough for our hot summer, but it's cute too. Maybe I'll even get her an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, polka dot bikini! Okay, may not too itsy bitsy. ;)
There's a section on www.marthastewart.com in the Kids area on a polka dot theme birthday.

Nope, one of my LJ pals helped me find a store that said they were going to get them in sometime in February and that they would call me. Mid-late Feb I called and they still weren't in. It's 3/2 and still no call, so yeah, no go. I also found out that they only came as a set (pants and tee) and is somewhere around $60+, so I decided to pass on them. Plus a few people said they just look like pajama pants (well technically they are LOL..they are "lounge" pants) :( .....so yeah, I wasn't sure if putting her in "pj's" for her party was what I wanted. You might want to keep checking out www.totshop.com (which is where the magazine advertised some of the other pairs at). I just checked, but they still aren't on there. Also check on www.PaulinaQuintana.com and maybe call around stores in your area. HTH! :)

Luckily one of my wonderful LJ/CC pals is letting me borrow a Paulina Quintana dress which matches her party perfectly :)

One of my other friends is making her her another custom shirt that will match her party. She is awesome. I can't wait to see it. Here is one that she made for DD before she was born....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/BooeyCruz/S63.jpg

She will probably end up wearing both during the party (more dependant on weather than anything) and possibly maybe even one of her Janie & Jack dresses.

We are ready for the party and are hoping and praying for no rain (since our house isn't giant and we are expecting around 60+ people). We really will need the use of our TINY backyard LOL.

I was going to get the one that holds 38, but decided on the one that holds 23 instead so that I don't always HAVE to make so many ;) That way my sister can use it when my niece has little tea parties or whatever with just 10-15 kids ;)

The 23 one holds plenty and any extras can be put on a little platter or something. But for the amount of people you will be having, you might want the 38 one....or two ;) hehe jk.

Seating question If you are having the party at home are you having people sit down at the dining room table to have cake? I'm not sure how to do the logistics for a one year old and a handful of kids (ranging from one to 13) and parents. I remember my parties when you had all the kids at the table (with the party plates, hats, favors laid out, but the only grown ups were my mom and dad. Do you set the table for people to sit or just do everything buffet style/finger food style?

I've thrown plenty of adult parties where everyone just ate standing or sitting at the couch but what about these kids? I'm just trying to visualize how it will be.

I'm probably just doing finger foods/Hor'dourves/snacks for the food and of course cake for desert.

target I went today and they didn't have any pink/green themed party plates/napkins etc.

What has everyone included in the grab bag/party favors for younger kids?

So far I plan:
rubber duck/rubber frog (bath size)
beach ball
bubbles?

I would like to include one more thing that is age and gender appropriate. We have kids 7 mo. to 3 y.o. attending. The older girls (2-3) are sooo girly and the boys are fairly boy-ish that I would like something that is safe and fun.

 DH would say I am already giving too much, but I love this doing stuff. :D

Favors.....

I sorted them depeding on age, but here are some of the thing I bought:

Bubbles
Straw/Tube bubble stuff (I have no idea what they are called LOL..but I loved them when I was little)
Stickers
Bracelets (for girls)
Whistles
Candy (all different types)
Playing cards (Go Fish, Old Maid, etc)
Hair barrettes (for girls)
Bouncy balls
Goldfish cracker snack packs (for infants)
Graham cracker snack packs (for infants)
Gerber juices (for infants)

I can't remember the rest right now (and i'm too lazy to go downstairs and look), but I know I bought some boyish stuff too for the boys that are coming.

You know what is sad, even at 2:30AM, I know what you are talking about! :p This toxic gum-like stuff comes in a tube and you can blow it up with the straw, right?

I hope I know what you mean. :)

Great idea for the infants! I didn't even think about snack stuff. I have to look for hair ties. All the girls wear their hair up, but hate barrettes! Thanks for reminding me.

Any thoughts on boy stuff. I forgot we will have 3 teenagers and 2 7 y.o. boys. No IDEA what to give them...

Favors Since I will have kids from 0-5 I decided to go with maracas. All kids love them(any musical instruments for that matter), and I found a bunch of nice ones at Oiental Trading Co for $2 a pair. I felt that for the price, they are getting an incredible favor. My DD already loves shaking them. Target has these jingle bell wristbands for $1.99 which would be a fun favor too.

For the older kids, my mom found these glow in the dark (the ones you shake and they glow neon) bracelets on clearnace for .25 cents a pack...regularly $2

If we wouldn't have found the maracas...I am all about consumable favors. Fruit snacks, teddy grahams, stickers, etc.

Oh and beach balls...those are great too!

I'm making princess crown shaped cookies, decorating them and putting them in cellophane bags and that's my favor.

Love the idea for maracas Traciann!

No, BuffaloBlondie, I couldn't see them either. I viewed the source page and found lcarlson's pic that way. :) HTH

tgray99- to be honest, I have no idea what is typical HERE, but back home we always got favors at parties, no matter the child's age. I was at a 1st birthday party last night and there weren't favors, but I know this mom would never want them, even if they were standard. Love the princess cookies. Yum!

Add my name to the list of people preparing waay in advance. (August). We are having 2 parties - one for friends and one for family. Many of our friends have babies under 1 year so thta will be interesting. We were tossing about a safari or a zoo theme. She loooves her elephants and monkeys. At the same time, this party really is about our celebrating one year with a love of our life. And so we may do something more for the adults.

Zoo theme:
Rent a popcorn machine
Have foods you would buy at a food court - hot dogs, hamburgers, "souvenier" cups for the kids
Animal head cake
Fun flower doecrations

Safari Theme:
Baby Pith helmet and coat
Animal head cake
Netting (ala mosquito) surrounding chairs, etc.
Decorate with palms

Grown-Up theme:
Fresh flowers all over the place
simple stripes pattern with a few bright colors (lime, fushia, yellow, turqoise)
Banners

We just had a barnyard themed party this past weekend. I didn't go too nuts, but here was a little recap if it helps anyone...

the invite I designed:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/farm2_hidden.jpg

Then I ordered a barnyard tablecloth, balloon and dessert plates from www.birthdayexpress.com (best price on the barnyard themed stuff, but could have also just easily used red and white checked plates/tablecloth):
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/food.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/Picture113.jpg
The 1st birthday balloon I got online, then my brother found the other balloons just at a local balloon shop (they just had like 5 with different animals, sort of hard to see here)

And I made a cow cake (Martha Stewart, I am not..), which worked out nicely as the hooves were two cupcakes, so it gave my son his own little cupcake to dig into...
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/Picture031.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/Picture044.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lisaro/Picture050.jpg

I also had bought him the Little People Farm set, so I just put the barn out as a "centerpiece", and the little animals displayed on the tables.

Have Fun!!

Oh, and for "favors" I just made chocolate lollipops, I found a cute lollipop shaped mold that said "I'm ONE", so just made some chocolate and vanilla and put them in a basket by the door for people to take when they left. I couldn't find any cute animal lollipop molds.

We had to go out of town for a week due to a death in the family and we got back Sunday(they are one day apart and both have big bdays this year so I am doing DS that morning and DH that afternoon) There are people I forgot to invite and things that never got done. I don't even know what I am serving!! We are doing a crawfish boil that afternoon so I don't need much but I am trying to think of something for the few kids that will be there and non crawfish eaters like me!

What are you guys serving?

ash313 - Sorry about the death in your family :(

Good foods for kids parties (depending on age):

Mini Sandwiches (sandwiches cut in 4 pieces)
Chicken nuggets
French fries
Quesadillas
Goldfish grackers
Graham cracker sticks
Veggies & dip
Chips
Pita bread & hummus
Nachos are always a hit at my niece and nephew's parties

If there is lots to do, most kids don't really eat, or just want to eat "junk" (well all the snack type items like cookies, crackers, chips, candy, etc).

*Our problem right now is that I just checked Weather.com for the weather and for the day of her party it says "Showers - 60% chance of precip.". I'm *hoping* and praying that it changes, but i'm super bummed, we have a few things planned for outside and we won't be able to do them if it rains :(

I think we've decided on a flower theme. I found a cake idea in Family Circle:
http://images.snapfish.com/3464%3B5987%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D3238%3E8%3B9%3E8%3C%3B% 3EWSNRCG%3D323357934%3A6%3B5nu0mrj
And for favors I'll have mini flower pots with one flower inside (they'll double as table decoration during the party! ;) )

And I could make 'dirt'. It's pudding with oreos crushed up inside a flower pot or cup.

I'm just starting to think seriously about this! Let me know if anyone has any bright ideas.

Natrat80, a flower theme will be really cute!!! You can also do flower shaped cookies (I am doing this for my DD's party). If you don't have time to do that, use cookie shaped cookie cutter to cut sandwiches for the kids. last year I did cookie shaped rice crispy treats (got idea from Martha Stewart), but they didn't turn out great b/c they kept falling off the skewers I poked them thru (too marshmallowy, I think)

Martha Stewart had this on her website, not a lot of ideas here but cute

I love your theme and the cake! And I've made "dirt" before and it is delish!

I bet there are tons of plates/napkins with flowers. For favors for the kids I've seen "stuffed" flowers at toys R us (with a little happy face) that are cute.

Natrat80 - Cute idea :) We did flower shaped rice krispy treats for my niece's b-day party a few years ago. We used a large (about 6-7") flower shaped cookie cutter and then individually wrapped them in colored saran wrap (pink, purple, etc) to keep them fresh and bring out more color and then put a little circle sticker in the middle to make them really look like flowers. We used thin wooden dowels (sp?) and colored them in green food coloring as the stems and then added leaves with green construction paper. We got a huge terra cotta pot and filled it with something (I can't remember for the life of me right now) - maybe uncooked rice or beans or something? - and then stuck the "flowers" in the pot. Everyone thought it was coolest and cutest thing and everyone got to take home a "flower" along with their goodie bags at the end of the party. I will try and hunt down a pic, but most of my old pictures have been burned on disks by my husband, so I would have to hunt through tons of disks to find it.

We also did face painting and tattoos, so a lot of the girls got flowers and of course the boys got things like bugs and whatnot.

For a game you could do "pin the flower on the stem".

For extra decorations you can cut out your own huge flowers from big pieces of construction paper and/or poster board...and of course tons of fresh beautiful bouquets as centerpieces.

Julie you have such great ideas!!

Thanks for the menu suggestions. I talked to my brother today and he is going to help me with sandwiches and maybe man the grill if I decide to do hotdogs or burgers. I am thinking of a veggie/cheese/fruit tray. I need to get over it and realize that I don't need to go all out this year even though I wanted to. I ordered DS a cute cake and DH said he wants a homemade cake or just a store bought sheet cake. As far as the real food goes, most people will eat the crawfish anyway. I am one of the few picky ones who won't! :p

No problem. I've helped my sisters with birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers, etc for the past 10+ years, so i've had a lot of experience ;)

Also, another quick and easy thing to serve (which we did at my niece's "Cowgirl" party) is chilli. We didn't have time to cook any, so we bought some yummy kind in the can from Costco and threw it in a crockpot. We also made mini cornbread muffins (in those tiny cupcake pans) and had them in a basket.

ETA: Not the greatest pic, but you can see the cornbread muffins here. Also for the apples that are shown, we had a bowl of caramel dipping sauce in the middle. Great way to have kids eat something good (and bad) at the same time ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/KatieMary/Party7.jpg

Fresh strawberries w/ a can of whipped cream next to them is also a hit...and another good way to get kids to eat something good ;)

ash - Is your son's b-day party a crawfish theme? If so, you can just bake a cake at home and then throw on some crawfish toys on top ;)

Lydia - Thanks.

We had DD (really it was me doing it) open presents after most everyone left, just close friends were hanging around. We had a lot of people at the party (and a lot of gifts) and couldn't see EVERYONE watching her open the presents for an hour or however long it took. If you have a manageable amount of guests, I think it'd be fine to open gifts during the party (we did this at the 2nd party w/ just my ILs). It also depends on what kind of mood your DD is in too I think.

alienhost - I think that a lot of guests expect to see the baby open their gifts. We had like 40 people and my DD opened all of their gifts. I don't know that I would always do this (nor would I always have 40 people), but people kept asking me to have her open their presents.

Ditto :) We're planning on doing it afterwards. Not only does it take forever, but it keeps a million other kids from ripping open all of your kids presents (therefore having you scramble as to who bought what....which in turn causes you a headache when writing Thank You cards ;) ). Oh and it also saves face when your kids gets something lame (like a TERRIBLE outfit from SIL) hehe ;) If someone insists that we open their gift in front of them, then of course we will.

ash313~ if you are still looking for idea for the "non-crawfish eaters" and don't have a lot of time, call Subway or a local subshop and order sandwiches. They are not too crazy expensive and will please the masses. :)

Another idea, serve boiled hot dogs to go with the "boil" theme and have all the fixings available, including shredded cheese, chili (from a can if you are not up for preparing it), onions, ketchup, etc... Everything comes prepared at the supermarket, you just need serving dishes and it is not too much $$ either. You could also fire up the grill and have hamburgers or chicken breasts with BBQ sauce.

Hope everything turns out well!! Is the party this weekend?

Particularly those who are doing color themed parties, are you differentiating between girl and boy favor bags? If so, how?

I think I'm going to do something like these bags from Plum Party (http://www.plumparty.com), but in brown.
http://www.plumparty.com/Merchant2/graphics/products/large/18325.jpg

Would it be weird to give boys a bag w/ a flower on it? Should their bags be just plain, no flower? I think I'm getting too nit picky w/ the details of the party! :o

i'll be using white bags as favor bags, but will be differentiating b/w boys and girls by the color of the tag (tag will say something like "thank you for celebrating Calyra's 1st bday"). i'll probably use pink (girls), brown (boys), and white tags (toddlers).

i also agree with pink_converse and they'll only care about the items in the bag.

As of right now, I am using bright pink bags for the girls and light green bags for the boys.

However, I have also thought about using beach buckets instead of bags. I haven't seen pink ones locally, so I am still torn... Green is cute for girls and boys, so I may buy those for everyone. :D

Wow, either you must have lots of $$ to spend or not that many kids to give favors to ;) $6 for the bag alone is way out of my budget LOL.

From years of experience, my sisters and I noticed that the kids could care less about the bag/box/etc that the favors come in. All the really care about is CANDY haha. Yep, not toys, not stickers, not the bag.....just candy.

I just bought cheap cello bags (hot pink for girls, lime for boys). My sisters have done everything from pencil case type boxes, chinese take out boxes, gift bags with handles, etc.

My niece just had a cowgirl themed party for her 6th b-day in November and these were the favors.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/KatieMary/Favors2.jpg

Simple, cheap bandanas filled with goodies and topped off with sherriff badges. Each kid also had their picture taken in the "jail" (that my sister and BIL made) when they arrived and after all of the kids arrived, I ran and dropped them off at the 1 hour photo. Each child decorated a frame and then before the end of the party we put their picture inside the frame that they made and they got to take it home. All of the parents were quite impressed ;) ..........

One of the kids getting his pic taken......

LOL, omg so OUT of my budget too. So no, I don't have lots of $$ to spend and there's maybe 13 kids coming. I am making them myself. Felt is so cheap, I have a sewing machine and a little bit of time so...total DIY project. For all the bags, I spent less than $3 (and I think I bought too much felt), maybe a couple dollars more depending on how I decide to embellish them. They will be no where as cute as the Plum Party bags but I wanted to incorporate more brown for the pink/brown theme...it was starting to be just a PINK party!

Your sister's parties are SO amazing. She really is so creative/talented! I'm sure kids and adults look forward to your family parties!!! :)

Wilton cupcake holder for those looking to buy the cupcake holder, the betty crocker catalog has them for 22.99 (23 cupcakes) www.bettycroker.com

ETA: I ordered this on 3/12 and it still hasn't arrived as of today, 3/29 - still in the midwest somewhere. So if you are in a hurry don't order from them, fortunately the party isn't for another month. I think it is coming from Australia or something!

Cute :) Pink and brown were the colors for my niece's cowgirl party :p
How old is your daughter? Is there anything in particular that she likes? An animal perhaps? We're doing pandas with bright pink and lime/apple green. Pink and brown with kitties, bunnies (which would be really easy to do if your DD's b-day is after Easter since you could find lots of bunny stuff on clearance ;)), pigs or horses would be cute :)

Hi Gals, Lots of great ideas in here! We have decided to go with the Hugs and Stitches theme for my DD's first birthday-- I changed my mind three times before deciding on this theme- I need help!!

Favor Question

Okay, we are doing personalized candy bars and I have loot bags that I need to fill them with. So far, I am going to put in a little bag of cheerios. The rest I am clueless. Bubbles, maybe? I know BooeyJ2 made an awsome list and I have gone through this thread three times and I can't seem to find it (DD usually fusses and then I lose my place in the thread and give up). Can anyone direct me to the page where she listed goody bag ideas? We are only going to have a few kids, so I want to have nice goody bags for them!

I just had DS's party saturday. Here is what I put in the goody bags

-Bag of goldfish crackers
- Bubbles
- one of those party horns that curl up
- and a little soap - most were rubber ducky soaps since DS is OBSESSED with rubber duckies but I had a couple monkey ones and I think a frog one for a friend who loves frogs

I wanted to do other things but ran out of time! Hair bows and bracelets for the girls and rubber duckies that light up in the water! DS LOVES his! :)

Thanks for the favor ideas. I love the rubber ducky that lights up in the water- where do I find them?

Hey there :)

I put together the favor bags last night and here is what was inside:

Infants - Gerber juice, Gerber food (squash, bananas, etc), Goldfish crackers, baby hair brush, little squeeze ball, bubbles.

Toddlers - Goldfish crackers, graham crackers, little bit of candy, bubbles, whistle, little squeeze ball, kazoo, stickers.

Kids - microwave popcorn bags, lots of candy, whistle, card game (either Old Maid, Crazy Eights, Go fish, etc), stickers, straw/bubble blowing stuff, bracelets and hair barrettes (for girls only obviously), car toy (for boys in lieu of the girl stuff)

Hope that helps :)

Chylynn,

I got the rubber duckies at Party America a local store here I don't know if they are a chain or not. I have also seen them at a Place called Paper Station in the PDX airport.

question don't know if this is the place for that or not but...
did you/are you doing anything as a family special the day of DC's first birthday? I would like to do something to make the day special if not for DC for DH and I - like watch our home videos or something. I'd love to know what you ladies did or are planning to do!

DD's b-day is on Thursday and we are getting her pictures taken at Picture People in the late morning, going to LegoLand after that and then out to dinner that evening :)

DD's birthday is Sunday and we are hosting coffee hour at our church- and will include a cake with HB on it for her. After church, we will probably go out for lunch and possibly to the Zoo or Science Museum- plans to be determine. FIL is visiting for the weekend, so we are also headed out to do lots of sightseeing tomorrow, so Sunday may just be the 4 of us doing dinner or lunch out instead of more activities. On Monday we are going to Sears for her 1 year photos. If FIL wasn't visiting, we would go Sunday. HTH. :D

Thanks neen, unfortunately it rained all last night and right now it's stopped, but it's still totally wet (not to mention freezing) last night and *of course* it's scheduled to start raining later from EXACTLY 12:00-3:00pm....the exact time of DD's party LOL. Figures. Oh well.....looks like we're gonna have one super crowded house and no jump house or outdoor fun. Stupid weather =P haha.

Off to go decorate cupcakes and stuff! :)

Margaret -Cute invtes. Love the progression of Allison growing up.

Thanks! Unfortunately I do not have the skills to make it so I paid someone to do it for me. It was $20 for the invite, just the file, and I am having 5x7 prints made via winkflash for 29 cents each. Not too bad. I got them from lashell at babyfaceinvitation.com, she has a zillion designs and can customize however you want, and works very quickly! If you have photoshop it probably would be easy to do, but I don't and don't have the patience or time to learn right now! :)

Julie- it is probably too late, but are you able to set up the jump house even if the ground is still wet if the rain has stopped? I hope the percipitation holds off.

We are hoping for a dry day next Saturday for DD's party. Of course today and last Saturday have been beautiful, so I doubt we will luck out 3 weeks in a row. 20+ people are invited and our town house is tiny, so were hoping to keep a couple people out on the patio... Crossing fingers for no rain!

Julie Hope your party went well, can't wait to hear your recap of it, and see pictures too!
neenbean We're having DD's party next Sat. too, I'm just praying it stays dry out! I'd love for our older nephews to be able to play outside, and maybe even get some use out of our deck! Crossing my fingers for you too...:)

I did make my DD's invites, I'll be back later with a photo of them, they are on shutterfly right now, so I gotta get them loaded on a different site!

Sorry, I'm not computer savvy enough to blur out my info, so please no prank calls;)

Not all the invites ended up looking exactly like this. I ran out of the polka dot ribbon and paper, so some had coordinating stripes, and a few had a brown/pink/green flower pattern paper as the background too. Same color theme, just a few variances:)

Thank goodness I went back a few pages because I was just coming to check and see if anyone had some good pink/chocolate ideas!!

I just saw the new CM paper packs, and loved the color combo! Thought I might use it for DDs June bday.

Ok, I have tons of pictures to post, so this is to be broken down in a quite a few posts. Most of the pics were taken before the guests showed up (since I knew that if I didn’t take them right then, I would forget), so yes, there were guests (over 60 matter o’ fact LOL) in case you’re wondering where all the people are ;)

The cake was just a white cake filled with vanilla bavarian cream on one half and chocolate ganache (truffle) on the other half and we served fresh fruit on the side (bananas, kiwi, strawberries). Don't mind the confoti on the cake, my friend Allison did that LOL.....

Booey -- what a great party you had! I think the panda and the pink/green polka dots themes went really well. I love how Paige's bib was also coordinated. I'm definitely inspired to start thinking about DS's 1st birthday.

By the way, is that your record collection?! Wow! :D

OMG julie, i love the party! everything was too cute and fabulous! the invitations are adorable and so were the decorations! would you mind if i *borrowed* the balloon weight and circle garland idea (would definitely go with DD's pink/hot pink/brown circle theme)? i was trying to think of an inexpensive solution for centerpieces/balloon weight, and soda bottles could be it!

your chef friend is so talented...your idea for the cake is so unique!

BTW, are those salt & pepper chicken wings from royal mandarin or golden chopsticks in national city? my family (who live in SD) get their chicken wings from there all the time! :D

paige must've enjoyed herself! what a lucky girl! how are you going to top this for her 2nd bday party :p

great job!

club924 just a thought, but I am using a bottle of bubbles as a balloon weight. I will be doing several balloons on each table, so it seemed to be the cheapest way to center them on the table. I got a six pack for 1.99.

julie just inspiring. what a fantastic party for paige!
