I live at the beach and I'm confused as to what I'm looking for when purchasing sunscreen's. Any suggestions?
I use Coppertone oil free sunscreen. I believe it's waterproof. Everytime I've ever worn it it has given me great coverage. Good luck!

You definitely want something waterproof and sweat proof and oil free is great for avoiding breakouts. SPF30 is the minimum I would recommend, though sometimes you can go with 15 and not burn much if any at all.
I wish I lived at the beach! :p

The ones with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide take effect immediately. You have to wait 15-20 minutes for other sunscreens/sunblocks to absorb in order to provide protection. You can find zinc or titanium in baby sunblocks.

Does anyone have suggestions for non-greasy facial sunscreen? All the ones I've purchased before are too oily for my skin (which is prone to breakouts).

I use Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer SPF 30 - Sensitive Skin . It absorbs in about 5 minutes and my face never feels greasy.

I use Kiehl's Ultra Water-Based- SPF 25. My skin is combination, but prone to breakouts in the summer, and I haven't had any problems with it in the past two years. I use it year-round, and in the winter I use it over moisturizer.

I have had the hardest time finding sunscreens specifically for my face that woudn't break me out. I've used Cetaphil and that didn't work. One thing to keep in mind is that sunscreens with titanium dioxide are more likely to cause breakouts for oily, combination, acne-prone skin. Oilier and acne-prone skin types should look for sunscreens that contain avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789). Currently, I am using Prescriptives All You Need Broad Spectrum Oil Absorbing Lotion SPF 15. And all I have to say is that after 4 years of searching for a sunscreen that wouldn't look block my pores, make me break out, or make me look like a grease-monkey....I FOUND THIS. It is the best!!! Prescriptives SPF for oilier skins (http://www.prescriptives.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY3300&PRODUCT_ID=PROD1084)
Here's some additional info...
From Paula Begoun (a skincare "expert") Sunscreens for Oily Skin?: The search for a sunscreen that is appropriate for oily skin can be frustrating. The type of ingredients that can be used to suspend sunscreen ingredients are not exactly the best for oily skin. The sunscreen ingredients themselves can also cause either an irritated breakout reaction or titanium dioxide and zinc oxide can clog pores. What to do? The only true answer is to experiment. I wish there was a slam-dunk solution I can offer, but neither my line nor anyone else's can legitimately make the claim that their sunscreen won't cause breakouts for anyone. For the rest of the body, I had good luck with Coppertone (they have quite a few different products). The one I used on my body is the Coppertone Sport.

I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock for my face and Coppertone Endless Summer Ultrasheer sunscreen for my body. Both go on matte, which is amazing after so many years of using greasy products! It really looks like you didn't put any on! Why two different brands? The Neutrogena is unfortunately half the size of the Coppertone for the same price, so I decided to use the smaller sized bottle only on my face to get more use out of it.

Bump!
Ok - I don't really live at the beach, but am trying to be more disciplined about sunscreen. My dream is a mattifying / oil-free sunscreen, but I'm not sure where to look (although the Prescriptives is interesting).
I just saw this powder sunscreen (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P175109&categoryId=C152) in a magazine recently. And in some office or another I read that Cameron Diaz swears by a powder sunscreen. Anyone tried this, or something similar?

I don't know anything about the powder stuff, but check out Shiseido's line. They have an extensive line of UVA/UVB protection products. Their clear sunscreen stick has become popular among surfers because it's one of the few "waterproof" sunscreens that really is truly waterproof and doesn't run into your eyes when you're surfing!

So I was looking this weekend for some new sunscreen. I typically purchase Coppertone Sport, SPF 30.
Well I couldn't find any SPF 30.....only SPF 50. I have trouble knowing that I need SPF 30.....has anyone heard about the benefits of SPF 50? It seems extreme to me.
I'm going to go check the Coppertone sight. I was just curious what everyone else felt about SPF 50

I posted this a few days ago in response to someone else wondering if anything above SPF 30 was actually effective and/or just a marketing thing:
I'm not a mom, but according to this month's Shape that is not really true. I think what a lot of people assume is that SPF 60 has double the protection of SPF 30 and that is what is definitely not true. IIRC, the article stated that SPF 30 protects you from 97% of the suns rays, while SPF 60 protects you from 99% of the suns rays. So just a 2% increase in coverage, but definitely worth it.
Let me see if I can find the article . . . .
ETA -- I cant find the article online and dont know the qualifications of the person who wrote the article, but I *know* I've seen this same info elsewhere recently.

See my understanding of SPF is that the number just talks about how much longer you can stay in the sun before reapplying.
So in essence if you reapply correctly and are aware of that, then anything more than SPF 30 seems to be overdoing.
I was just amazed that there were so many brands where all I could find was SPF 50.
I think I'll stick with my 30 (it makes me feel better)
Thanks
:)
I've been using an awesome facial sunscreen that I got as a sample from my Derm - SOLBAR AVO (http://www.dermstore.com/product_Solbar+AVO+SPF+32_173.htm). This stuff is so awesome!
Usually whenever I use sunscreen it goes on WAY too thick and just seems to lay on my skin, even with moisturizers with SPF. This stuff doesn't smell like sunscreen (a plus in my book) and absorbs really well. This is the first product that I've liked enough that I use daily.

I can't speak to the sience behind it, but in my own personnal experience the higher the SPF the better your protection. It really depends alot on your own skintype I think. I never use anything below 50, if I put on spf 30 I still burn. Right now I'm useing NoAd waterproof/sweatproof spf 60 I put it on once and I'm good for the day. I spent the entire day at a theme park yesterday and the sun was HOT, and still I am not burnt at all. With my Irish skin that is a minor miracle.

For my body I use Ocean Potion's SPF 50 (purple bottle) 'cause it's water/sweatproof, PLUS-- it doesn't have that awful sunscreen smell. For my face I use Hawaiian Tropic's Oil Free Faces SPF 30 (which also lacks the sunscreen odor).

Saturday, DH & I went to a Renaissance Faire and were out in the sun all day... I used Neutrogena SPF 70 (water/sweat-proof) and came away at the end of the day with absolutely no trace of sunburn... I'm Irish and turn into a lobster if I don't wear sunscreen (and usually even if I do) so I was very pleasantly surprised.
