I know there was a thread about this on the other site, but I'd like some opinions.
We're going to be in the market soon for a mommy car. Right now we drive a 98 civic (me) and a 96 corolla (dh) and they're fine for one kid, but no way with 2, and all the associated stuff. Plus, repairs on the corolla are getting pricey (all the expensive stuff is starting to break) so we're going to trade that in for a mommy car soon, and DH will get my car. (Man, did I win out in this situation or what?)
Any recommendations? We were at the toyota dealership today (picking up DH's car from it's latest $600 service) and checked out the sienna and the highlander. I have to admit I kind of liked the highlander (with the 3rd row seat), despite my previous status as an suv-hater.
Anyone have either of these as a mommy car? Or some other car? We're partial to hondas and toyotas, but aren't wed to them. (Although we won't buy an american car. Don't flame me ;) )
Thanks!

We recently bought a Kia Sorrento and love it. We did a lot of homework and shopping around and also come from a very strong Honda/Toyota background. We were going to get either a Highlander or a Pilot, but after doing lots of research we felt the Sorrento was the best option for us.

We have the Honda Pilot and love it. Ours has the 3rd row seat, which we keep down most of the time for strollers. I think it will be more than enough room when #2 arrives next year.

We have a CRV. The back cargo area is actually VERY roomy, and the back seat has more than enough room for 2 carseats. Course, no one else could really travel with us, but thats not a concern for us.

Does the CRV have a 3rd row seat? We really want something with a 3rd row, something that'll fit 3-4 kids in it. (We're hoping this car will last through several kids in babyhood - ie, car seats.)

We're also looking for a new vehicle right now. We're strongly considering the Chrysler Pacifica. They come with a 3rd row seat option and drive really well.

We just got a '05 Sienna and I LOVE it! Aaron likes it since he can now see out all of the windows. In the Camry I don't think he was high enough too see and now I can listen to my music instead of his. :)

We just got an '05 Honda Odessey and I love it! I have so much room for stuff and my 3 year old loves the DVD player in it. I love that the third row seats fold into the floor so we have easy access to cargo space or people seating :)

I don't blame you for not wanting to buy an American car either. Who wants to spend so much on repairing it?
I had a '98 Corolla and loved it. Never had any problems. I would probably go with the Highlander myself, but I would want the Hybrid version. You'll save money on gas! My DH is planning on getting a hybrid highlander in the next few years probably.
I drive a '05 Subaru Outback which has been good to be so far too. I think it will be great for a baby too, but I wont find out till November when my first is due.

You could get the Highlander Hybrid, so you can have the suv and be earth friendly. Of course, you'll probably still get more mileage on your Civic (I have a 98 Civic also), but it's better than getting a straight up SUV.
My Civic gets about 30 miles a gallon highway, 24 when I am stuck in stop and go traffic. My mileage is similar to my friend's Prius mileage.
I love my little car, but it's a PITA when I have to put DD into her car seat. I feel like I have to contort her to fit into it.
So I am with you on the mommy car. I am actually saving to buy it within the next year or so.

We have a Honda Pilot and love it. We've had it for 3 years and will purchase it when our lease it up. The 3rd row isn't great for adults to ride in--but as our kids get older and have friends travelling with them, it will be great for that. Right now we mostly keep the 3rd row down to allow space for strollers and general kid junk.

We have the Chrysler Pacfica and love it! It has 3rd row seats, built in DVD player. It holds the stroller and all the babies stuff great.
we just bought the Sienna about 3 weeks ago and I love it. Its such a smooth and quiet ride! plenty of room for everyone and everything. I NEVER wanted a mini-van but thought it more practical in the long run. No regrets here. Prior to the Sienna, I drove the Honda Pilot as well. I really liked that too. As someone else said, the 3rd row is not comfie for adults (unless you're short like me) but we only used it every once in awhile. It drove like a car too which was a must for us. We actually paid more for our Pilot than the Sienna but that's b/c we bought the Pilot the first year it came out, got leather/DVD and we got a great price on the Sienna since they are trying to clear out '05s.
I guess you have to assess your needs/wants. The Pilot would've served its purpose for sure (it was just a smidge smaller than the Sienna), but we wanted the conveniences that a mini-van can offer when we have 2 kiddies to lug around (ie. automatic doors and trunk, ease of getting in and out of the van vs. SUV, etc.)
oh, there was another thread that BTB started not long ago that debated the SUV/mini-van thing. It might be helpful to you...I'll bump it for you.
ETA: the thread is in the "chit chat" forum

there's this site motherproof.com (www.motherproof.com), it's reviews of cars done by moms.
i test drove the volvo suv and liked it a lot. if i was car shopping now, i would definitely consider the pacifica, also the new subaru tribeca looks nice.

I have to say that I'm a Chevy girl. I don't have any kids and right now I drive a Malibu, however I am thinking about trading my car in for a Trailblazer. You can get one with a 3rd row of seating and fully loaded with DVD players. My best friend is due next week and she also drove a Malibu, she just traded her car in for a new Trailblazer last week and loves it. They drive really well and are so comfortable.
I am not a minivan type of girl, even after I have kids. Growing up my mom ALWAYS drove a Suburban (before it was cool to drive an SUV). She always caught a lot of flack for it from everyone b/c it wasn't popular, but she loved her Suburban. I think once I have kids I'll drive either that or a Tahoe. I just love the way they drive and they have sooo much room. Between my brother and myself and all of our friends and activities growing up my mom said that she would never go back to anything smaller. Even though we're grown she still drives a suburban.
I have also driven the Acura SUV and they also are really nice and drive really well. The Toyota Highlanders look okay but I've never driven one of them. I have however driven and been a passenger in a Pacifica and hated it! I felt like I was just too low to the ground and there was absolutly no room in the back....I rode in both the 2nd and 3rd rows. My friend has a Pacifica with her three kids and she's sorry that she ever bought it. There is absolutly no back space with all the seats up there doesn't even look like enough room for groceries.

Thanks for all the info!
dana b -thanks for that link! Awesome!
vjel - thanks for the bump. Lots of reading to do there.
Franni - We're actually considering the highlander hybrid. It's about at the edge of what we want to spend. We originally didn't think it was worth the price difference between the hybrid and the "regular", but then we remembered the tax incentives. :) My civic's only getting about 24 mpg now (it's OLD) so this won't be too much of a decline. And it's not like we have much choice.
We're still doing research. This is made even more fun with the fact that we dont' want a new car now, we'd rather get one next year, but if something expensive breaks on DH's car, we're getting a new one then (so we want to do the research and make a decision now, just in case). Doesn't make sense to put much more money in a car that will barely net us any trade in value.
We got the Honda Odyssey last summer when I was expecting #2. I absolutely love it as do both of my girls. We keep the 3rd row of seats folded down for now b/c I keep a double stroller and a single stroller in the back. There is so much room for everything.
We chose the Odyssey after test driving both the Odyssey and the Sienna. We liked them both but got a better deal on the Odyssey.

I'm sure I've seen a thread on this before, but I've searched and can't find it. I'm thinking of trading my little sedan in for an SUV or something bigger with #2 on the way. Any recommendations? I like the midsized SUVs like the Trail Blazer and the 4Runner, but I also like the Tahoe and the Sequoia. What kind of car do you have with 2 kiddos?

I have a Honda Pilot. It has more than enough room with two car seats. There's even room for me to sit in between the car seats if I need to. We rarely use the 3rd row because we keep strollers back there. I've already told DH I'd get another Pilot if I was looking for a new car.

I have a regular Blazer. It works great for me. Plenty of room for 2 car seats and lots of room for strollers/shopping in the back. Not so great on the gas mileage, but that's hard to find with SUVs.

I'm in the market as well since getting rid of my 2004 Civic last November. If we had stopped at 2 kids I was either going to get a 2006 CRV (can't stand the 2007 re-design) or the 2007 RAV4 with the 3rd row. I test drove both this summer and loved them both.
Now that we've decided to have that third kid (we're done at 3 though) my list of cars I'm considering are all Toyotas and Hondas--the Rav4 (I think it's too small for us for longer trips but I'm going to check it out again since the gas mileage is so good), the Highlander or the Sienna or the Pilot or the Odyssey. We really almost need 4wd to get up our driveway in the winter so most likely it will be the Highlander or the Pilot for us. I haven't test driven any of those 5 yet but the Rav4 but I know someone with each vehicle and they all love their specific vehicle.

We got a 2007 Honda Odyssey just before #2 arrived and I love it! So convenient. I love love love the power doors, all the safety features, easy access to the 3rd row even with 2 carseats in the middle row, easy fold down back row for the dogs or cargo, integrated sunshades in the 2nd row for the kiddos...I could go on and on! I test drove the toyota sienna and preferred the odyssey's handling. I love my minivan so much! Never thought I'd be a minivan momma but I'm in the "functional wins" stage of my life right now!

One of my huband's employees just got a new Odyssey yesterday and she is so excited about it. I don't know if I see myself driving a minivan, but I'm with you, Mag, on the "functional" aspect. I'll take a look at it.
I didn't know the Trailblazer had optional 3rd row seating. That makes it even more appealing, but I wonder if that really takes away from the cargo space.

We have an 06 Pilot and we LOVEEE it. We too leave the 3rd row down most of the time and it has a ton of storage in the back if you do that. It's a great car for the dollar.

We have a Saab wagon. I am not much of a SUV or a minivan person but if we have any more kids I may change my mind.
We have the Chrysler Pacifica. 3rd row seating, drives like a car rather than an SUV, virtually no rollover which is what we loved about it. It's sort of the...not quite a minivan but not quite an SUV vehicle.
We test drove so many different family cars before we landed on this one -- which was the first one we really liked but we wanted to weigh our options fully.
Our friends bought a Nissan Quest about a year ago and oh, I do have minivan envy in terms of the automatic sliding doors etc, that's for sure. I think if we were going to have another kid we'd go the minivan route just for little perks like the hands free opening doors!
The Pacifica has a fine amount of cargo room but it's nothing spectacular, and if the third row is up it's next to nothing in terms of having space for a stroller etc.

CarolinaGirl:
Just wanted to mention that we have a Sequoia and while I do love it, it's really big. It drives like a dream, but there are some tough blind spots. We only have one kiddo right now, but we have two dogs and two cats. I regularly take the dogs down to my parents' so I really needed the third row seating. In the Sequoia, the third row is actually two seats. We keep one installed for the 100-lb dog to ride in and keep the other one in the garage. That way we have plenty of storage room in the back, but an extra seat, if necessary. :)

I know you're saying you won't consider it, but you really owe it to yourself to at least test drive GM's new crossovers, the GMC Acadia or Saturn Outlook. These have roomier 3rd row seats than any other vehicle in the same class - adults can actually sit comfortably back there. The 2nd row seats slide forward for easy access to the 3rd row. All of the seats fold flat for cargo. The Acadia & Outlook also have class-leading EPA gas mileage ratings (even better than the Honda Pilot!) not to mention a 5 star/5 star crash rating. The other bonus is that you get a 5 year/100,000 powertrain warranty.
Editing to add: I forgot to mention that OnStar is standard in both of these. Now that I have a DD, I will never have another car without OnStar again! OnStar does neat things like:
remote door unlock
remote vehicle diagnostics
calls the vehicle in the event of airbag deployment (to alert emergency response)
When my lease is up, I'm getting an Outlook.

I got the Lexus RX350 in December and have absolutely loved it so far. I'm pregnant with #2, so no real world experience with two kiddos in it yet.
My sister has 3 kids and has a Honda Odyssey and loooooves it. She never wanted to drive a minivan, but it's wonderfully practical with three kids and has been great for road trips.

I have a Mazda MPV. They're no longer making them, but they're a good smaller minivan. I say smaller because they definitely are smaller than the Honda and Toyota camps (in price and physical size), but you still get 7 passenger seating.

Just bought a Pilot 6 weeks ago. I love it!!!! Was very close to getting a Highlander. I am of the 'no minivan' mindset. We only have 1 kid so the 3rd seat is down, but fits a ton of stuff back there. But nice to know we have the third seat if we needed it.
DH needs to get rid of his Jetta when we ttc #2 - We can't imagine him in a sedan, so I think we'll be looking at the Rav4 or CRV.
I love the look of the Sequoia, but we just can't afford it and the gas that goes along with it. Plus the Pilot is plenty big feeling and looking without being huge. The Highlander seems more like a suped up station wagon in terms of its height.

Oh, how timely to see this thread...
DH and I are going to start TTC #2 later this summer. Currently I drive a Mistubishi Endeavor and love it. We bought it before DD came last year. It's roomy and has plenty of cargo space.
Why the need to change? Well, we have an 80 pound lab that we take on trips with us. The Endeavor does not have 3rd row seating; with 2 carseats the poor guy wouldn't be able to move.
I have to admit; I don't see myself as a mini-van-mom. I just don't think I can bring myself to that just yet. DH is trying to convince me we would have to get one. I told him he could drive it.
Any recommendations on an SUV with:
3 rows of seating
enough cargo room for a stroller and overnight bags (we spend weekends at my parents' in another state)
room enough for adults to sit in the 3rd row
Relatively easy to drive (I'm pretty good at it, but DH sort of sucks at backing up in the SUV we have now)

See my post about the Saturn Outlook or GMC Acadia on the previous page. Sounds like just what you're looking for. They ride & handle like a car because they're body-frame integral (fancy way of saying built on a car suspension.)
Reiterating that they have the most spacious 3rd row in their class. Adults CAN sit comfortably back there - plenty of leg room & the seat back isn't positioned vertically like some other SUVs.

room enough for adults to sit in the 3rd row
For how long (ie to dinner and back, or a 500 mile road trip)? We haven't had our third row down much but we did get back there when looking at our Pilot. From the comparisons I read, the Highlander 3rd seat really, really isn't meant for adults at all. The Pilot has more room. Though a pp said differently.
I would think if you need the 3rd row seating for long car trips, then you are looking at a minivan or a large SUV (Suburban, Expedition, Sequoia size) - though I didn't look at the large SUVs because it was more car than we need.
Minivans and the regular SUVs with a third row seat have very little space for storage if the 3rd row is up - friends with kids and dogs end up with a rack on the top for long trips.

I talked to DH about this today and he wants to get another Tahoe. We actually already have one, but it doesn't have the 3rd row seating, but it has plenty of space. I drove it for most of DD #1's first year because I was breastfeeding and there was so much space in the back seat. I love it. Now I'm back to driving my BMW 325i and it is so small in comparison, but DH says he'll drive it for now. Anyway, we do love the Tahoe so I think we'll just get one with the 3rd row seating.

I will be in the market for a new car in the next year or so and while we don't have children right now, DH is of the mind set that we will be getting a minivan to get ready. However, I am not ready for a minivan right away especially with no children in the immediate future, but definitely interested in vehicles that will be able to make the transition to familymobile a bit better when the times comes! Right now I drive a 2001 2 door Pontiac Sunfire (it was my first ever new car :) ) So I definitely want a 4 door vehicle, but nothing too big. DH drives an Envoy and I don't really like to drive it because it feels too big! Any recs?

eli1126--I'd go with a small crossover or a small SUV. I had a Honda Civic 4 door with 2 kids and when I tested a CRV for a week while mine was in the shop I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't really any larger to park etc but had much more room inside for kid stuff. If we hadn't been planning to have a 3rd (no 3rd row) I'd have traded in the Civic on one the day I returned it to the shop. I think you'd be happiest with something similar.

Thanks for the suggestions.
In regards to length of time in the backseat for adults, I'd say no more than 2 hours. That's about the length of time to my parents house but I don't anticipate anyone needing to sit back there honestly. That's just about the longest trip we take.

eli1126--I drive an 05 CRV and I adore it. We have a 4 year old and a 15 month old, and the 4 of us fit very comfortably, with a ton of space in the back. Also, before the kiddos, adults can sit comfortably back there. I know I have.
It gets fantastic MPG for an SUV. I get about 26 MPG, mostly freeway driving. We have a stick shift, with 4 wheel drive and a sunroof. So, it still feels sporty and fun, while being a pretty good mommy mobile. However, we will be trading it in in a year or two, when they start putting out hybrid mini-vans.
We have a Saab wagon. I am not much of a SUV or a minivan person but if we have any more kids I may change my mind.
Ditto! The cargo space is amazing, and I could NOT BELIEVE how well the Marathon fit. Absolutely no impact on the front seat position whatsoever (and my DH is over 6'5").
We also have a Nissan Xterra and have fit (albiet scrunched) a Snugride, a FF convertible seat and a positioning booster in the back seat. We love the Xterra because of the dog-friendly cargo area and the roof rack, where all of our luggage ends up now with just ONE kiddo!

eli1126-You sound like me, I drive a 2-door Firebird;). Fun to drive but not practical for a future family of 3 or 4. I also don't want something huge, DH wants me to get an Explorer but I don't think I would feel comfortable driving it, hate driving his Bronco, and the reliability is a concern.
Mistubishi Outlander anyone? Not a mom yet but hoping to be in the next year:). Looking at spending around $20,000 for a new vehicle that's safe, reliable, and spacious that will fit a kid or two. I'm also considering the new Honda CR-V and Nissan Xterra (my favorites at the car show). I also liked the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Pilot, great space and comfortable but out of my budget. If money was no object I'd consider the Volkswagon Touareg or Lincoln MKX. A friend of my mine just bought the Ford Edge and loves it, seems to be getting rave reviews but didn't impress me at the car show, maybe a test drive would prove otherwise.

Thanks for the recommendations Ladies! I do like the look of the new CR-V. My sister has an 03 CR-V that her DH now drives because they got the Sienna. I know she really liked the CR-V, but needed the minivan space when DD #2 came along! I think something like the CR-V would fit the bill. The nice thing is I have time to save up to put a large down payment on whatever I choose.

bumping up with a question about the Odyssey's.
Anyone that has one, can you tell me if the Stowable 2nd-Row PlusOne Seat™ is a bucket or bench and if folds down like the Grand Caravan? We need to get a minivan within the next month or 2, since we have the twins coming and Easton has his bigger carseat. Right now my '99 Grand Am coupe will not cut it for all those carseats and hubby's car is '97 Neon Sedan that is in need of some work.
We are looking for a van with entertainment package since we travel quite a bit, would like a stowable seat so we can access the back seat with easier access. I may go and look at them this weekend anyway, but if anyone can tell me the answer and/or show pictures of the seats, that would be great.

bumping up with a question about the Odyssey's.
Can't help with the Odyssey, but did you also check out the new 2008 Dodge Caravan (http://www.dodge.com/en/08caravan/index.html) and Chrysler Town & Country? Not only do they offer the Stow n' Go 2nd row seat, but you can also get 2nd row seats that swivel plus a removable table! Probably not useful now, but it will be in a few years when your kids are older. A power folding third row seat is also available, as well as an entertainment package.
Prices for the 08 models will actually come in slightly less than the 07 models! I think you'll find you can get a way more reasonable price on these as opposed to the Honda.

Thanks Diane, we are actually seriously considering the Grand Caravan's still, but just figured would check with the Odyssey since be in NJ and my brother lives near a Honda Dealer. We are looking to shop probably in Sept, as the twins will be here end of October most likely. Didn't even think about the 2008, know they are going to be redesigned since it's been like 6-7 yrs since the last redesign.
Was just telling my mom that we want a good van that will hopefully take us until the kids are out of needing a booster seat, so at least 8 yrs. (My car I have had for 8 yrs now and still runs good)

well I don't own either but I have been keeping an eye on things since we will need to pick up either a 3rd row SUV or a minivan this fall and right now the dodge dealers in my city have such an overstock they have cut prices pretty good already. Two dealers were advertizing brand new Grand Caravan's with the two row of stow and go seats that are MSRP at around $28K for $19K. If you are interested in the 2007 Dodge over the Honda you might want to see if your dealers are doing the same right now.
I do like the changes to the 2008 Grand Caravan though but I still think we'll end up with a Honda or Toyota--we just seem to lean towards them the last 10 years or so (DH used to be an adamant GM/Chrysler guy but our last two cars were Hondas).

Just got an email from a dealer offering almost $6000 off the sticker price of a certain Grand Caravan extended model.
Really like the swivel seats of the 2008 GC. That is a cool feature mainly because of the kids. Would actually have Easton in one and he would be able to be facing forward in his seat while still facing backwards. (his feet wouldn't hit the seat back) Depend on when they are released though too, since we need it early fall.

I'm planning to get a new car in the next few months, before our first baby is born. My major priorities are: (1) Safety (2) Cost (3) Fuel Efficiency/ Environmental Friendliness (4) Cargo Space
I've been looking at the following options, but would love some feedback from anyone who has one of these cars or can suggest something similar that I might like.
- Toyota Camry Hybrid
- Volvo V50 2.4 Wagon
- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 Wagon
I currently drive a Toyota Camry and I love it. I wouldn't be getting rid of it if we weren't having a baby-- it's 12 years old and has had zero problems, still drives perfectly. But now I'd like something with maybe a little more cargo space and upgraded safety features.
Any thoughts? TIA!

I have to post here-I just got a used Honda Odyssey and I LOVE it! It took some convincing with DH, but I'm really pleased with our choice. After just driving it for one day (we got it yesterday) here are my favorite features:
-DD can climb into the car and into her carseat by herself, I just have to buckle her in. This is going to be SO nice when I'm 9 months pregnant.
-Drives like a car. We also have a Tahoe and sometimes when I drive it I feel like I'm driving a boat!
-Roomy in the front, middle, and back seats. Lots of space for cargo even if the third row is up.

ITA! We got a 2005 odyssey 2 weeks ago and I love it! ours has the dvd and 8th seat. it is so roomy and just great from the kids to get in their seats themselves!
We are also planning to get a Honda Odyssey, but plan to try and get a deal on a 2007 now that the 2008s are coming out. We read lots of reviews on minivans and the Odyssey was the clear favorite in every review, followed by the Toyota Sienna. I love the automatic doors and the built-in sun screens in the Honda.
Ericka_Jarett We just looked at the Odyssey and I *think* the plus one seat is stow and go, so that the second row can act as a bench or two separate seats.

I have a 2007 Odyssey and I love it. I love it so much that I'd marry it if I could.
The middle row has 2 captain's type seats and a middle seat that can be removed and stored under the floor. The two other seats can be removed or can be slid to one side so that they're together. The back row can be all up, one up/two down or two up/one down or all down.
It is sooooo cool.

Rosebud--DH and I are looking to get me a new car in the next year or so. We looked at a couple of the ones that you posted about. The Camry Hybrid is a nice car and has a roomy interior, but there is not a lot of trunk space. The Camry wasn't designed to by a hybrid so the battery for the hybrid engine takes up a bunch of the trunk space. Our two top choices are the Toyota Sienna and the VW Passat Wagon. We thought both were really nice vehicles.

Now that is a resounding endorsement! :D I have to say that the Odyssey really won me over, and I'm glad to hear that someone who owns it has such nice things to say.

Thanks, Meggers! Yeah, I was afraid of that with the Camry Hybrid. It's such a bummer, since I love my current Camry and I love the mpg of the hybrid... but I think we'll need more space. DH has a two seater, so this will be our primary car for trips/ hauling things. Glad to hear that you like the Passat Wagon!

How about a Prius instead of the Camry hybrid? You'd get approximately the same passenger space, better mileage and the versatility of a hatchback. You can fit an amazing amount of cargo in the trunk area because the hybrid battery isn't located in the same spot as in the CamHy.
I'm not an SUV or minivan person myself (though some of the crossovers that have come out in the last couple years are pretty neat!) so I was looking at mid-sized sedans when I knew I needed a new car that was more family friendly than my old Saturn coupe. Accord, Camry and Mazda6 were on my list until I discovered the Prius. 18 months, 25,000 miles and numerous & continued price hikes in fuel later, I'm glad I made the decision to go with the Prius.

I test drove the Prius, but disliked the fact that the hatchback/spoiler part went directly through my line of vision when I looked in the rear view mirror. I felt like I couldn't see things behind me. I did think it was pretty darn spacious for a midsize car (great trunk space), though. What are the safety stats like for the Prius? With all these huge SUVs on the road I'm forever worried about getting mowed down in my normal-sized car.

I thought the split rear window was going to be an issue for me, but I had no problems seeing out the back when needed (and I'm 5'2"). It took me a week or so to get used to it, as I was used to a large one-piece rear window prior to this. Also, the backup camera helps a lot when reversing (available in package B for an extra $575 and all other higher packages, along with vehicle stability control-a must IMO).
As far as safety ratings go, here are some stats I pulled up:

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/safety.aspx?year=2006&make=Toyota&model=Prius
You can check out some of the safety features here:

Happy car shopping! You'll find something out there that suits you and your family. :)

Thanks ladies for the help with the Odyssey. Dh is leaning toward that type since someone at his job (she is the lawyer for the company and also gave us the peri recommendation and has twins and a singleton as well) has one and she loves it.
Wondering if someone with the 2007 would mind measuring the full length of the 2nd row with the middle seat up. Have to see if the 2 infant seats and 1 car seat would fit or if we would be stowing the middle and having one in the back. Since Easton is only going to be close to 14 months and can't buckle himself in, I will need to have easy access to him so he may end up with a 2nd seat if all the seats won't fit in one row.
TIA

My parents bought a Camry Hybrid a few months ago and love it, but they do say that you lose trunk space in the Hybrid.

Now that #3 is on it's way we have to get rid of our 07 Acura MDX. The third row isn't really made for passengers and forsure doesn't have any leg room once the carseats are installed. Great car, but not a kiddo car. So we went to buy a Tahoe or Yukon...there is virtualy NO trunk space. So now we have narrowed it to the Yukon XL/suburban and the Acadia. I will have 3 marathons (my 4 month old nicece too) and 1 compass booster in my car plus a double stroller in the trunk. I have tried everything in the Acadia and it fits but I worry that the car will become too small shortly after our purchase. I love the fact that it gets good gas mileage and I can park it without huge hesitation. The Yukon XL drives great and not too big, but parking is a PITA. ANyhow, DH thinks we need to get the Yukon XL but I really want to make the Acadia work. Anyone have one?? DO you think 4 carseats would fit in there easily, 2 in back and 2 in front so we can get the two in the back? The inside is about the same size as a mini-van. We need a 4x4 so a mini-van is out. I need pictures of an acadia with someone actually using it everyday with kiddo's. Can anyone help me?!! TIA!

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a question...lol.
I'm in the market for a new car soon, and the Acadia (and Saturn Outlook) are the two main cars I'm focused on. I'm sticking with GM, as I get the employee discount through my grandfather - and have had my Chevy Malibu for 4 years now. I purchased it new and loved it but its time for a bigger car.
Have you driven the Acadia? I have yet to "meet" someone that has one and I'm really curious to see how people are liking it. I'm at least 2 hours from the nearest GMC or Saturn dealer so I'm interested in getting as much info about it before I take the time to drive up there and see them.

I have been eyeing up the Acadia for awhile now. I took a look at one and test drove it, and now I'm just dying for it to be time for me to get a new car. I thought it drove like a dream. I loved it. Take a look at the consumer reviews on MSN, Yahoo, and Kelley Blue Book.com. It's getting great consumer and expert reviews.

You ask if I liked how it drove, well, I am comparing it to the past three cars of mine which all have been Acura's. So it is very hard. My 07 MDX has great horsepower with a lot of get up and go. I like zippy, the Acadia isn't so much zippy and doesn't have the horsepower I am used to. it actually feels like it needs more umph and from what I hear when you get on the freeway you need to floor it. I didn't drive it on the freeway. But again I am comparing it to a luxury car.
I also will have 5 carseats in 2 years which slips my mind at times. My sister plans to have another and I will be watching her two plus my three and I don't think the Acadia will fit everyone.
it's a great looking car, IMO, the best full size out there. I am very picky when it comes to cars too. If I could make it work I would totally get one but I am at such a loss. The car salesman think I am nuts telling them what I need a big car for, 5 carseats and a double stroller!! Plus if you get the GM discount you will get an even better deal. My dad has a GM card with 2000 points on it so we were going to apply that to our lowest out the door price. I haggle with salesman until I get what I want for my trade in and what I want to pay for a new car. They are not dealing as much on the 07 Acadia as I thought they would because the 08's are coming out. But keep your eye open for huge rebates.

I actually drove it on a four lane highway and I didn't need to floor it AT ALL. I looked down and was doing almost 80 mph without realizing it. Do you know if you drove the FWD model or the AWD model? I remember reading a review that said on the FWD model, you needed to hit the pedal harder and could feel the engine shifting more, and that the AWD model was smoother. I have no idea why that would be. My automotive knowledge is limited. FWIW, I'm used to driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I do feel like I need to floor that a lot of the time, so it could just be the difference in what you're used to driving.

For all the CRV owners..
First off my husband is currently driving 'my' pilot. We originally bought it for me but I really wanted either the Accord (2003-2007) or a 2007 CRV. Because I felt this was more me...
So I drove the Pilot for maybe a month but haven't since. The gas was killing me.. It was costing me at least $90 a week... :( So my DH and I have been talking and either going to trade in the Pilot in or sell it privately. I just don't want anything to do with it.
We have just one DS and if anything maybe another baby in two years no sooner. And a small doggie. So there really isn't a reason for me to have a big car. In about 5 years he is planning on buying his car which will have three rows.
So my question is how is the gas mileage for CR-V? How many miles do you get on a full tank? Or half a tank? And any opinions on the Accord or CR-V will be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Emi

Just updating to say that while I haven't entirely decided yet, I'm leaning toward the Ford Escape Hybrid right now. I'm been comparing and comparing different cars for months now (with priorities being safety, space and fuel economy) and this just seems to make the most sense.
I was thinking about a couple of sport wagons, but the gas mileage was just so terrible (19-25mpg) that I couldn't conscience it. The Escape Hybrid gets 30 mpg, has more space than the other hybrids I looked at (Prius and Camry) and has a bunch of great safety features. I'm still really uncomfortable with the idea of having a SUV, even though it's a hybrid, just because I've considered them environmentally irresponsible for so long. So I may still get myself a terrapass (http://www.terrapass.com/) to assuage some of that liberal guilt. ;)
It's not for sure yet, but that's what I'm thinking about at the moment. Anyone own an Escape and have any thoughts?

Just dropping in with my 2 cents...
Rosebud & FutureLamGirl03: I drive an '05 Diesel Jeep Liberty 4x4. It has plenty of room for my DS and all of his stuff. Currently expecting #2, and will drive the Jeep until we outgrow it. It gets 26 mpg! Not bad for a 4x4 SUV (albeit, a small SUV) My SIL has the exact same vehicle only not a diesel and she gets around 18 mpg. Better fuel economy and diesel is actually better for the environment... something to think about. I believe the '08 Jeep Grand Cherokee is going to be available in a diesel model, but I've heard it is going to be quite pricey.

Just chiming in on the Acadia discussion. We don't have one but our friends just bought one and we spent all weekend with them. I was really surprized at how big it was inside (looked a lot smaller from the outside) and how much space the third row actually has...although I didn't find the seats to be very comfortable.
The only thing is I don't think it could accomodate more than 3 carseats...you need to slide one seat of the second row forward to get to the third row.
But it had a nice ride and all in all I was impressed.
DH and I looked at Volvo XC90's and VW Touregs this weekend. The Volvo has the third row seat, but it's really crampt, and the second row is subsequently not terribly roomy. Menawhile the Toureg has no third row, but the backseat is super roomy. IMO the Volvo is much comfier and more plush, but they are both close in price.
Anyone with feedback on either?

Gardenmommy, not sure if I will be of any help. But I own a 2006 Volvo XC90 without the 3rd row. I LOVE it. It is super comfy (I drive over 2 hours every day commuting) and it gets about 20 mpg. I think it is pretty spacious inside without the 3rd row. And without the 3rd row there is tons of cargo space. But I will say I don;t have any children so not sure how carseats and whatnot fit and kids gear.
But overall I love it and plan on getting another one when this one has too many miles on it!

Thanks for your imput Reebs. I'm not sure we would really use the third row much, but it seems like most of them come with the third row now automatically anyway. Thankfully I'm not a super big packer of mommy jumk (accept for out of town trips) but I think the Volco cargo space is pretty big too.
I'm glad to hear it is so comfy...The 4-runner I currently drive is pretty nice for a 4-runner, but drives like a truck and can be very bouncy which is getting on my nerves.

We just started looking for a mid-size SUV and these are the two that I am most interested in as well. I've heard great things about the Volvo and not so great things about the Toureg. I would love to hear more feedback on Touregs. It's hard to find people who actually own these. We will most likely not be buying until the new year, so we are still doing our research. Be sure to come back and update what you get!

Good taste!;):D
Well my older brother is the manager at a VW dealership so he has given me the inside scoop on Touregs actually...When they first came out a few years ago they had a lot of electrical problems with all the fancy stuff that comes standard in them, but they have since resolved all that. The other things I have heard is they are relatively inexpensive to maintain and repair (most VW's are actually) and it has the same body frame as the Porche Cayanne but a different engine. And they actually et much better gas milage than they state on their fact sheets.
Honestly the only 2 things I don't like about the Toureg so far as are seats, (not super comfy) and it seems like the rear-view is limited by such high back seats.
I'm planning on test driving one in a month or so when I go visit my brother, so I'll let you know what else I find out.

Garden, you are right. It seems like now they all come with the third row and while the seats do fold right down into the floor and make for a pretty flat surface, if you don't need them why get them! I actually had to special order mine to not have the 3rd row (and I got the navigation...which is great!). But again, it is roomy (I think and my DH has a Tahoe so I know what R-O-O-M-Y is!!) and super comfortable. And so far (knock on wood) no issues to speak of and services aren't all that expensive.
Savannah, my sister was thisclose to getting the new MDX. It was really nice, but a little too small for her (she currently has a Nissan Armanda). But it had every bell and whistle you can imagine and was comfortable as well. And anything with the Acura name seems to be reliable.
Good luck...I'm jealous you all get to buy new cars.

I drive an older model (and by old, I mean 1994!) :p Taurus Wagon. It's loaded, which makes it a bit easier to drive such an old car. Lately, however, it seems that one thing after another has gone wrong with it. And of course, it's not good enough to go to the mechanic, oh no, they are always things DH can fix (ahem, when he finds time), so we've been basically sharing his truck (thank goodness for extended cabs). I, however, am sick and tired of being stuck at home or getting up and taking him to work if I want the truck! I was really hoping that we could wait until next year to buy another (paid for, we don't want any loans) vehicle, but now I'm thinking that we should just bite the bullet with most of our tax return, oh and the rebate check. :p
My wagon now has a third row seat and it's plenty roomy enough to fit in the stroller and groceries. Still, I find myself wanting a mini van. I've wanted one for awhile....

We have a VW Treg, LOVE IT! We have a 2004 loaded V8, 4 corner air suspension, nav etc. It is true in 2004 (orginal model year) they had a ton of electrical glitches that have been resolved, they have also come down in price due to the lower taxes and tarrifs on the V8 and V10 engines. I do know a ton of orginal model year owners that are very unimpressed with the new Treg2 vs the old school Touareg. A great spot to check out is clubtouareg.com you can ask as many questions as you'd like....remember though they will all tell you a Touareg is the best truck on the road and well hands down it is....in my biased opinion.
You will pay a premium and I would only suggest getting one if your going to get all the gadgets and engine - V8 or V10 TDI, really worth the price and remember you are paying for the performance and German Engineering. Keep in mind they have there nice gadgets but nav, window shades, air suspension, rear heated seats, upgraded leather, walnut trim instead of the steel look - those kind of items do not come standard on the V6. Also there are things that came standard on our V8 that is only an option on the V10 now (ie heated steering wheel)- some good changes but some options lost for V6 and V8 models.
However they are not inexpensive to maintain. An oil change at the VW dealer is 185-200 depending on the dealer, our truck does take 7 1/2 quarts of oil - I would imagine a V6 would be cheaper. We have to replace our rear hatch brackets and they are 168 just for parts (two simple arm brackets) not including labor. Either way the point, great car but if you get one be ready to pay for service - afterall its a German car.
16-17.5 MPG City and Highway
Audi/Porsche/Bentley/Rolls-Royce are all owned by VW
***One word of warning*** We have noticed in other VWs parked in parking lots (always go up and check out there tires, funny I know) there seems to be an ongoing tire cupping problem old and brand new trucks due to suspension connections because they use rubber bushings....so you will go through tires.

We have a Grand Caravan at home, but this summer we will be traveling to Seattle and need to rent a car. Only 1 company is being even somewhat reasonable with a mini van.
I measured the 3 carseats and would need at least a seat with a length of 53-54" long. Anyone have a vehicle other then a minivan that has a back seat with that length to it? If so please post the model for me please. Our girls will be in their infant seats and our son is forward facing in a convertible seat.

I measured the 3 carseats and would need at least a seat with a length of 53-54" long. Anyone have a vehicle other then a minivan that has a back seat with that length to it? If so please post the model for me please. Our girls will be in their infant seats and our son is forward facing in a convertible seat.
You'd probably want to check it out in person, but my friend has a chevy impala - we got her daughter RF in a snugride, her son FF in a boulevard and my son RF in a roundabout in it.

$185 for an oil change?! Ohmygosh. How often do you have to get it changed? I agree with being ready to pay for service with a VW. I love my VW, but they aren't cheap to maintain. I like some of the new VW models coming out later in 08. They are going to introduce a small SUV.
Anyone have a diesel Passat wagon?

I am not sure how many mile between oil changes off the top of my head buts every other month.
Our tires are about 230 a tire we have a funky size that are no longer on them 255/55 R18 and they are low mileage tires....in 4 years we are going on our 3rd set.....mostly due in part to the cupping issue.
Mgrace...I believe you are referring to the Tiguan which can I say I m very unimpressed by.....way too small I would say it has as muh cargo space as a new rav4 don't quote me on it since I have not looked up specs yet but I did look one over at the car show. Also Audi has a smaller version of the Q7 coming out as well I think its called the Q5.....
Those of you that mentioned the ride I imagine steel supension will ride harder than ours but when we put it in comfort mode its sooooooo nice the sport mode suspension is a stiff ride but corners so much nicer. Keep in mind this is a performance luxury vehicle so its going to have a much harder and stiffer ride than there counterparts like volvo. I personally love that ride and the seats are nice and hard and stay hard 4 years later we have the cricket leather but they show no sign of wear front and back.

just chiming in here. We bought a 2008 Toyota Rav4 last week with a 3rd row and I am THRILLED with it. It's getting reasonable gas mileage (mid 20's), handles great and the kids love it. We have my two youngest in the 2nd row and my oldest in the back row (half down) with a booster (he crawls in the back since we have carseats in the 2nd row). We flipped down the middle section of the 2nd seat and DD can see DS1 in the back and they keep each other entertained. We took a run to sams and had TONS of room for a whole cart full of stuff as well as could have fit more in. I'm loving my new car!

Erika-(or anyone else that might know)Do you have the captain's chairs in your Caravan? Is it safe to put carseats in them? I have one child in a rear facing infant seat and one in a forward facing carseat. I am thinking seriously about getting one this week. Are you happy with yours?
Pink -- We have captain's chairs in our Pacifica and it's worked out fine for carseats. Seems like a lot of minivans do the captain's chair thing anymore.

Pink - yes we have captain's chairs in our Caravan, my bff has one with a bench, she hates that after seeing ours. We have Easton forward facing in one using the Latch system and the twins sit in the back row, one with the seat belt and other with the latch. Both captain's seats have latches that you can use. We have the twins in the back and stow one of the Captain's just makes it easier for us since Easton can't get into his car seat alone yet.
We really like our van had it since September. It has dual sliding doors. The rear has it's own controls for the fan, which can be controlled from the front or back of the van (since the kids are little we control it up front), multiple outlets in the van that use either the battery power without the car being on or from key which we try to use most. We didn't get automatic lift gate (it was something like an extra $300) The third row can be used for tailgating or just put down to have more access in the trunk area. Since we have to use the 3rd row we still have plenty of space for 3 strollers in the back (presently 2 strollers, 2 camp chairs, 2 camp tables and 2 pack and plays) We had gotten 0% financing at the time, so that helped a lot.
The trunk space when we only had the double snap and go and also the Maclaren Volo stroller in the back, now we stand the strollers up since we have all that I typed above in the same area The other is the area with nothing in it. The 3rd row seats can flip back for seating if you have the lift gate up or you can fold it all the way down into the opening for a flat surface.

Our seating arrangement, seat is stowed in the floor in the 1st, and we can actually fit a person in the 3rd row even with the seat bases there.

Pink - if you need any other info, feel free to ask, will try my best to answer.
Also, our van has the center console between the front seats. My bff doesn't have that and wishes they did, they tried pricing one not from the dealer and it was almost the same price as the dealer, it does come out if we want to remove it. It has an outlet in it that can be used with the console lid closed, a holder for a cell phone that flips out to use with the lid of the console closed,, then there is a tray that you can remove and then there is a huge space underneath (we have a container of handi-wipes and secret stash of M&M's for DS) In the front there are 2 cup holders in the tray that slides out and they are adjustable for the size of cup. In the back each Captain's chair has a cup holder on the side closest to the sliding door. The 3rd row has a cold holder on both sides , along with a long compartment you can use for anything. The passengers front seat has a back pocket on it. Since the seats are Stow & Go (we thought about the Swivel and Go but the seats don't stow at all, that is a feature we wanted most) we keep extra diapers for all the kids, wipes, first aid kits, paper towels, wipes, the infant carrier and son's backpack harness all that is under DS's feet area. The other area has the seat in it so no extra space to use.

Wow Ericka! I appreciate the pictures and the details on your van... I might just be a van mama after all ;)
Got a ? for you though... Not sure where you live, but have you ever driven it in snow? Like 3-4 feet of it? If so, how does it do?
We are going to be trading my car in towards the end of the summer for another snow-able vehicle that can fit both babies with room for 1 more (in the future). But it snows SO MUCH (3-4 feet for 6 months straight) here that we need something for roads that aren't plowed/ect. Do you think your van (or any van really) would be ok in conditions like that?

We rented a Caravan just last weekend and it had that. It flipped down from the console so the driver and front passenger could see the people in the back. It was kind of cool- I imagine it's designed for parents to keep an eye on (forward facing) kids.

Honestly, I can't answer how it would do in snow like that (my mom lived in NY State where they had 30 something feet of snow her last winter there and people have older models that seemed to do fine in the snow) We had one snow storm since we had the van and it was only a few inches this year.

We have all the above but the conversation mirror. We do have the overhead console, it holds sunglasses and a few cd's. The floor console is like what I described above, I haven't taken it out yet, but will when I need to clean between the seats. The driver door storage bin is a pretty deep pocket, I keep my stash of a roll of small trash bags in it. The left rear quarter trim storage bin is like I described above, it's not huge by any means, but will hold little things for the person in the bag, we keep our converter for the DVD player in it. We didn't get a built in DVD player, we just couldn't imagine spending $2k on one when we got a portable one which we use in the kitchen for now for only $200.

Well, I needed something big enough for my business hauling baby eqiupment and something with 4 wheel drive (since I had to be towed out last year while delivering). I also wanted a third row, so I went with the Ford Expedition. They are not as popluar out here as the Tahoes or the Yukons, but I wanted something that the third row folded flat and the Expedition has this.
I'm also having a third child in December and liked that the second row (bench) has 3 LATCH spots. It has a 40/20/40 split. The middle part also pulls forward so it makes it easier to reach.
It's probably a bigger car than most people need but I get to write it off to my business! It also gets better gas mileage than I anticpated, we run about 15 - 16 miles per gallon, with a lot of city driving.
This is pretty much what mine looks like http://webiol.homenetinc.com/dealers/4009/8422/12914.jpg, except mine is a carbon color.

I ended up getting the Caravan! It has bench seats instead of the captain's chairs I wanted but they gave us a great deal on it so I can deal. So far I love it. It has lots of bells and whistles and many more gadgets than I am used to but hopefully I will be able to figure it all out. We got it the day before a 6 hour roadtrip so we got to break it in! Having a dvd player was so great for a 2 year old. He was so comfortable, and entertained the whole way!
I have questions about the integrated child seats. Are they really safe? Can I put my 2 yo in one instead of his carseat? Will the airbag come between the seats and hit him in the event of a crash if he's sitting on the seat in between the front seats (behind that middle console)?
On a side not we were nearly hit head on going 70 on the highway on the way home. We probably would have died. Some old man was driving a huge truck 70 the wrong way down the HIGHWAY!!! The person next to us would not get out of the way so we could get over either. It was terrifying.

Pink - congrats on the van. Glad you like the van. We broke ours in a 2 days after getting it at as well. We stayed in MD since DH had to work in DE for 2 days. So it went from NJ to PA and then down to MD from PA.
No idea about the seat, as we don't have them. I would think it would be safe and wished they still made them in vehicles, since it's such a pain sometimes to have to drag the car seat places.
Sorry to hear about nearly getting hit, people can be so stupid. Glad you are all ok though

Well around here for 6+months there is a good 3-4 feet of snow on the ground. They plow the main highway but side roads stay unplowed for the most part. We had a bit of trouble getting through some parts with our lifted F250 this past winter (that has huge mud/snow tires)... So I'm thinking a van doesn't have the clearance needed to get through the snow around here :( I really, really don't want to get another huge vehicle that's going to guzzle gas like our truck does....
Pink, we have a Toyota Sienna and I know the they have a 4WD option on the van which would certainly help in snow...just not sure about 3-4ft of it, lol.

PinkMartini-I had a Subaru Outback that did just awesome in the snow. I live in Colorado. We are going to be trading in my car and I think we are going with the Subaru Tribeca. It comes with 3rd row seating and other options. I would try to get a 2008 or 2009 as before then, the "B9" model is no longer and the new ones are much better.

We just have the 7 seater and it is plenty for us. I've seen pics of the 8seater and that 8th seat in the middle row seems small. How do you get back to the 3rd row? Anyway, we have the 2 captain's chairs pushed together so the kids can be closer to each other (I have dd help give ds his snacks :) ). I like it better this way. When we had them split it was such a pain for other people to get to the 3rd row w/ the kids in the middle.
How often will you need to drive 8 people around? Is it a necessity?

We have the 8 seater. I love it. I can get 3 car seats across the 2nd row (all 3 spots have LATCH). It does make it impossible to get to the 3rd row w/ all 3 seats installed, but we work around (put the last car seat in after people are in the 3rd row). Otherwise, Noah rides in the middle of the 2nd row and Daniel on the side, and we flip up the other 2nd row seat to get to the 3rd row. If we've got someone visiting, Noah likes that they can sit next to him.
Plus, we managed to carpool to the zoo once - 3 adults and 5 kids in car seats. It was a tight fit, but we did it!

I have been drooling over these for months now..lol.
I'm not a mom, but I did talk to a brand new mom the other day at one of my family sessions and they just bought the Acadia after they brought their little one home from the hospital. She said she LOVES it and even though she only has one she couldn't imagine going back to a car.
A friend of mine has an older Saturn car and they also have a Vue. She said her Vue gets the same gas milage (if not better) than the car - and I would bet the Outlook is pretty darn close to that.

We will be ordering a 2009 Saturn Outlook as soon as the new pricing comes out. My parents have an 08 Acadia that both DH and I have driven (with the carseat for DS installed) and we both have plenty of room (he's 6'4" and I'm 5'10") and love how it drives. The only reason we're going with the Outlook instead of the Acadia is DH prefers the way the Outlook body looks just a little better (I think he's crazy, I don't see any difference between the two).
Both the Acadia and the Outlook are getting some nice upgrades for 2009, including a better engine, which is one reason we're ordering an 09. We plan on keeping this vehicle for at least 5-8 years, which means we could have 3 kids by then, so we need something that can grow with us and last.
We are planning on ordering the second-row captains chairs (I think they actually come standard with the model of Outlook we're looking at). The only thing I don't like is the fact the third row only has one back tether and either only one set or no LATCH hooks (I can't remember, I have to look it up) but perhaps that's another change they've made for the 2009.

Hi all, just want some opinions. DH and I are having a boy in Jan. My lease is almost up on my trailblazer. So I am trying to decied what to do. I know I want to buy something. So should I get a car? Would that be easy to put a baby seat and kid into, per say to a SUV? Part of me thinks SUV would be easier, because then I have to lift vs bend down? But for all those parents out there....You would know best! What do YOU think?

There are plenty of sites on the web where you can do a side by side comparison of both vehicles. The things that stand out to me are that the Acadia has better EPA gas mileage ratings, a roomier 3rd row seat, a more capable powertrain, standard OnStar, and a better warranty than the Pilot. Totally subjective, but I think it's better looking than the Pilot, too! ;) I'm interested to see what you decide.

I have made a rec before but just wanted to give an update...
I have had the Lexus RX 400h since last May (hybrid SUV)...according to the onboard computer (or whatever you want to call it!) I am averaging 24.7 miles per gallon.
I do mostly city driving....a couple miles here and there....not lots of highway. I have 14K miles on it.
I have one son - just turned 3 - it's very comfortable for us
I am actually surprised by how the gas mileage is so I wanted to share.....
Good Luck with all of your future car purchases :)

So I just had a family shoot with yet ANOTHER Outlook family...lol. I picked their brain and they said they LOVED theirs. They have two small children and a large lab and just got it a few months ago. She had always driven Ford Explorers and said she drove everything in this "range" and it was by far her favorite. They've got second row captains chairs so the kids can sit with the dog in between them...lol.
She also said other than the leather and stereo (which are slightly different) even the GMC dealer told her the Outlook and the Acacida were the same car so they went with the Outlook because its a bits cheaper.

They are. There are a few more bells and whistles on the higher-end Acadias, but the engine, frame, and main components are exactly the same. The Buick Enclave and the newly released Chevy Traverse are the other crossovers available from GM and those two are built on the same platform as each other.
We were all set to order our Outlook this weekend until the local dealer totally low-balled us on our trade-in. They weren't willing to get up to the number we need (and know we can get for it) so we're going to try another Saturn dealer about 100 miles away. We're running out of time, though, because we'll need the new vehicle by the beginning of October at the latest! DH test-drove both an 08 and an 09 and he said he could totally tell the difference with the better engine in the 09s. Plus, there's a convenience package in the 09 that offers a backup camera in the rearview mirror, and I'd really like that.

We rented a RAV 4 on our vacation this year. Very nice car! Really nice size. I don't think there's any way you could fit 3 car seats in there, but we fit 2, all of our luggage, a stroller, and still had room to be comfortable. I was pretty impressed with it.
I have 3 carseats in mine--but I bought the one with the optional 3rd row. We've taken short trips with it--2 Triumphs, 1 high back booster, one large suitcase, 3 small overnight bags, a collapsed dog kennel, CPU, portable baby swing and an umbrella stroller and we all still had leg room. :) Of course the 3rd row is only usable by children. An adult would be cramped on a long trip.

So, we're on our way to a minivan... i know nothing about them. What features do you NEED? What features are useless?
We'll definitely need to fit 3 britax (marathons) in at one time, but it should be able to handle 4 carseats (we're definitely having 3, im hoping for a 4th but dh is dead set against it so only time will tell...)
Thanks!
Oh - and any brand recs are good too!

In my experience Toyota and Honda are the two coveted brands.
The two vans are very similar, but there are some important differences. Toyota has the mechanical folding 3rd row seats, where honda's are manual. On Honda you have to get the highest end "touring edition" to get the automatic trunk lift (push button on your key and button at the top of the trunk to close). To me this was really great feature that I had on my SUV that we were selling.
After just telling you the differnces we found between the two you may be surprised to find we bought a Honda (used). I found the driver controls, storage, and just those subtle things that are hard to finger made the real difference. I just didn't feel comfortable in the Sienna...it felt utilitarian or something to me.
In my experience, I found all the vans had very, very similar convenience features like sunshades built in, folding ability of the seats etc.
I think you've just got to start shopping. :)
I've had mine a month and have been happy with it. I guess this sounds ugly, but I was driving a nice Lexus before and do feel like it is a pretty big step down in driver comfort. But, for our growing family (3yr old and twins on the way) it was the only real option for us. The ease of getting the kids in and out and the room is working out great.
Good luck in your search.

After a ton of research and test drives we got a 2008 Dodge Grand Cararvan in August. I really like the look of the newer minivans but I test drive used ones too. The Town and Country and Caravans are both made by Chrysler in the same factory so their essentially the same van but the Caravans are generally a little cheaper. The only feature that I had to have was stow and go which we got. So far I absolutely love it! Having the extra room is heaven sent especially with a new baby coming in April. Feel free to ask me any questions! good luck!
there's a whole thread about the mommy car here (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5464) and this (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3988&highlight=mini+van) one might be helpful too.

We got a 2007 Grand Caravan brand new last September (loved the 0% they offered) and we love it. We have 3 that are all in carseats (a 2 yr old and twin almost 1 yr olds) We went knowing which van we wanted to look at exactly since the dealer had them all listed on their site.
We wanted Stow and Go seating (we leave 1 seat folded down the twins are in the 3rd row and my son gets the other captain seat in the 2nd row. Since none can buckle themselves yet this is a great feature to have) and dual sliding doors. We didn't care about the liftgate being automatic and honestly glad we didn't get that feature now, since I know someone who had to take her van back 2 times because the liftgate didn't work right on her Toyota. All the extras on the driver seat are nice, touch of a button adjusting. We love that if we needed to, can take all the carseats out and lay all the seats flat to carry furniture from the store or whatever we need to, while the kids are home with grandma. I posted in that mommy car thread, there are pictures as well.
I agree if you look at Honda and Toyota, odds are good you'll wind up very happy. We compared the Odyssey and the Sienna, and chose the Sienna. It's the best car I've ever owned - and I traded in my Acura when we got it. :)

I also compared the Odyssey and the Sienna. We're going to be buying the Sienna very soon. But, honestly, you can't go wrong either way. I can't speak for any other make/model though, those were to only two that I looked at.

Would have loved a Toyota Sienna, but it wasn't in the budget. We have had a Ford Freestar for 3.5 years and have been very pleased with it!
We just got a Sienna. We had been Honda people up to this point (had a civic and accord) but I just found the Sienna more comfortable to drive than the Oddessy.

We have the Sienna and LOVE it! I call it the maxivan.
But things that are essential are navigation and remote door openers. With little ones in the car you don't want to have to worry about being lost or reading mapquest directions. The door openers are because you will have to carry the entire universe and not having to open a door manually is a godsend. The backup camera is awesome and since you can't really see anything below 4' tall out the back I would say it is essential. I would be terrified backing out of a spot at the park w/o it.
I don't know of any features that are useless. We don't use the DVD player since DS absolutely loves riding in the van even for 5+ hours. But we have the rear sensors which are really useful but you could probably do w/o them.

We just bought a 2008 Odyssey on Saturday and had a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country before that. The auto doors are a big need when your arms are full with kids and gear. Our Chrysler had an auto truck and our new van does not (though more of the 2009 Odyssey come with them). I liked the trunk feature a lot, but my DH didn't as he would often go to close it while I pushed the button and it got confusing. The sun shades in the Odyssey are great as well as the pop down mom mirror. We also looked at Siennas before buying this time, but were put off by the faux wood trim on the inside of the front dash area. I also didn't like how Toyota had a zillion different mix/match options. It would be hard to find what you want without paying for stuff you don't. Honda had 4 levels for the Odyssey which made life easier. Also liked how the Odyssey came with an eight seat (though small). The main reason we bought Honda though is because they are offering $5K off the 2008 models and we talked then down to invoice! I think the two brands tie for best van from what I've read!

Oh, the built-in sun shades...AWESOME! I no longer get random screams from the backseat due to sun blindness. I hate our pop-down mirror though. I can't see anything in it w/o getting into an accident squinting.

We just got a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan as DH's company car. I wasn't that excited about it because
A. It's a minivan
B. It was pre-configured, so we didn't get to choose options. And it came with NO options!
This thing has manual sliding doors, a manual liftgate, and no other frills. But I'm really surprised with how much I love it. The Stow n' Go seats are amazing - we can fit all of our gear under the floor. And it drives so nicely. There's great visibility out of the back, which I appreciate when I'm backing up. I've decided I can make do without all the extras - we're saving a ton of $$ on it and it more than meets all of our needs.

I also didn't like how Toyota had a zillion different mix/match options. It would be hard to find what you want without paying for stuff you don't.
We bought a brand new 2006 Honda Odyssey in late 2006 (model year close out) and I have been thrilled with it. We looked at the Toyotas and what mel7dog wrote above is the biggest thing that turned us off. The mix/match options were confusing, the salesguy wasn't very helpful, and there didn't seem to be an easy way to avoid paying for some features we didn't want. We may have had a different experience if we had gotten a more helpful Toyota salesguy
I love the 'plus one' seat in the 2nd row of my Honda. It has been a godsend when we go on fairly long trips (3-4 hours) with our 2 girls. It's not uncommon for me to sit between them and read them a book or play with them or whatever.
I have fit 5 kids in car seats in my van :) We put 3 boosters in the third row, and had 2 convertible seats in the 2nd row, and everyone had plenty of room.
The sun shades are awesome. The pop-down mirror....I agree that it's useless. I never use it.
There is PLENTY of space in the back. I love how the back "trunk" area is really deep. The lazy susan in the floor is neat, although we don't use it because we bought custom floor mats, which makes the lazy susan inaccessible. We just have some emergency supplies stored in there.
While the 3rd row seats are manual, they are really easy to set up or put down. It's a total non-issue for me. I don't have a manual trunk, but again it's never been an issue for me. If I have the kids with me, I just put them in the van first, and then open the trunk to load in my groceries or whatever.
We opted NOT to get the DVD player, and even had to order our van from a dealer 200 miles away (vs. driving one off the local lot that had the DVD), and I've never regretted that decision. (We chose the EX-L over the Touring, in part, because of certain features like DVD player that we didn't want.) No offense or judgment to those who prefer the DVD - it's just not a feature we wanted.
What I don't like about my Honda is that the doors don't automatically lock when I shift into drive. (I've always had that feature on every car I've ever owned.) My rear view mirror did not include a built-in compass. It drives me NUTS not knowing which direction I am going, so we'll be getting a digital compass. I may be wrong, but those things (automatic locking doors and compass) may be standard on the Touring model.

I wasn't sure which thread to put this in but seems the infant thread gets the most traffic so I'll start here :)
We just found out were having twins. I currently drive a Honda Civic and there's just no room to put 3 carseats in there so we'll be on the hunt for a new vehicle. I'm guessing it'll be a minivan but if you have any other suggestions I'm open to that too. It needs to be moderately priced, I would LOVE double slide doors that open with the push of a button, get good gas mileage (for a van). And any other good mom features you know :D
Thanks for your help ladies!

We got the Odyssey EX and have been really happy with it so far. We went ahead with a used model so it was much cheaper. Good gas mileage, double automatic doors, drives like a car, the back area fits a ton of stuff. We've got the two infant seats in the 3rd row, a convertible seat in the 2nd row behind the drivers seat, and the other seats from the 2nd row is removed.
The 3 we were looking at were the Town&Country, the Sienna, and the Odyssey. I liked the idea & ease of stow-n-go seating with the T&C, but if the seats stay in the car while you're not using them then the gas mileage is higher than if you took them out. Plus it drove like a big boat. The Odyssey has the option of the 2nd row being two captain chairs or you can slide one over and turn it into a bench seat.

We got a 2004 odyssey when we found out we were having twins. I really like it- honestly, the deciding factor for us was the test drive. DH and I liked driving the odyssey, and didn't care for any of the others. It handles better than any other car I've driven. I do wish it had a bit more cargo space, but I think that's a problem with any minivan when the 3rd row is in use.
The other thing that was vital for us was the fact that the captain's chairs in the 2nd row slide together to make an aisle on one side. Otherwise, there would be no way for my older DD to get back to the 3rd row, since the 2 rear-facing seats would be blocking the aisle if it were in the center.

So I finally test drove an Acadia yesterday.
I've been wanting to for the past year, but the closest GMC dealer is at least a hour away from us. Our local pre-owned lot has been getting them in frequently but they are gone within two weeks so every time I think about stopping it's already gone. I also know that I won't be ready to buy until at least summer, if not the end of summer and I hate to "waste" their time.
I was out with my stepmom/sister yesterday and noticed one sitting on the lot (that wasn't there earlier in the day) so she quickly pulled in and we went for a drive. We know the owners of the lot, and they said they'd already have TWO people stop and drive it that day.
It was soooooo nice. Exactly what I wanted - fully loaded with leather in all three rows, 2nd row captains chairs, etc. The only thing missing was a sun roof, which I would probably order with mine as I really like having one. It was an 08 and drove really smooth so I would imagine an 09 would be just as nice if not better. After having my 03 Malibu for 5 years (I bought it new) it was like riding on air....lol.
I had my 9 year old sister and stepmom, who is over 6', with me and both of them tried out each section. Even my stepmom was comfortable sitting in the 3rd row. I loved all the compartments and cup holders, I also really like the ease of the way the seats all fold down and the back hatch lifts itself and comes down easily. I just couldn't get over how nice the ride was. My mom always drove a suburban so I learned to drive in something really big and found the size to be just right for what I want/need.
Needless to say, I was really sad to leave that baby on the lot. I just keep telling myself that I need to get through this winter before we think about getting me a new car.

*bump* Dh's Jetta is beaking down more and more (9 years old) and I think we're ready to start looking for a new car. Our other car is a 2005 Honda CRV, and though we could probably do really well trading it in (it has less than 35K miles and we keep getting notices from the dealer that it is in demand) - we know it really doesn't make any sense to replace the newer car, and there is really no need to have two car payments any longer than necessary. (the CRV will be paid off in September - sooner if we choose but we haven't b/c of low interest rate)
So - we have 1 DS. We'll probably keep our next car (and our 2005 CRV) for a pretty long time. We're hoping to have #2 come along sometime in 2010. I'm thinking we'll want something good for 2 kids, but also good for when we're carpooling / wanting to bring other kids in the car a few years from now.
I like the CRV and Rav4 (esp. the 3rd row of the Rav4 - though I don't know that we need that)
Mazda is having some good incentives and I'm wondering if anyone has any comments on the Mazda 5? I guess it's like a mini-minivan. I like the sliding doors and the fact that it doesn't look like a typical minivan but don't love that the seond row only has two seats.
Should we be looking at minivans even though we only have 1 child right now? I'd be going used if we did that. I'm not opposed to used, but one reason I've been looking at new is b/c of the better financing / incentives, but I do need to check around for rates.
Since I drive a CRV now, I'm thinking I'd like to stick to something higher off the ground (but nothing too big).
Sorry for the novel - any recommendations, advice or reviews?
Thanks!

RobynScott--have a 3rd row Rav4 and LOVE it. I haven't driven a minivan but they are a LOT bigger on the inside than the Rav4 and if you want ot keep something smaller like the CRV you drive now I think you might really like the Rav4 over a minivan. However the 3rd row of the Rav4 is really only for children. You could put a shorter adult in there for a short trip but really I wouldn't even put a teenager back there for too long. DS1 love it and says he has lots of room but he's only 5. ;)

I have a Mazda 5 and I love it for my mom car. It's the best. If I had known how much I love mom cars, I might have gone for a fullsize minivan. :p
However, day-to-day, it's just the 4 of us and it's perfect for that. I also love that when my parents are in town, or when I want to take the coworkers to lunch, I can just pop up the back row. I love how easy it is to fold down and pop up the back row.
For a while, I had my older DS in the back row, with younger DS in front of him, and then it was really easy to cart around the extra people. Now, I have them both in the 2nd row, so it's harder to bring extras. When we have visitors, we put older DS back to the back row.
Mazda5 is pretty popular at my work. There must be at least 5 or 6 in our parking deck now. I, mean, it's no where close to the number of Camrys, but still a good representation. ;)

Anyone have a non-minivan vehicle they love? DH refuses to drive a MV, so we won't be buying that anytime soon. We both love the Lexus RX but with the deals that are out there now, I want to look at ALL the options. Plus the maintenance on the RX is a bit expensive, I believe. We both have BMW's now and I am looking forward to something with lower maint. costs (ours our 7 and 11 years old). Any suggestions?

BusyBee21-I got a Volvo V70 station wagon last September and I LOVE it! It is so nice inside, and we got a great deal on it. I absolutely love driving it, and even DH has said that he wishes it was his car. I never thought I would drive a station wagon, but I feel like it's a little more stylish than a minivan. ;) It has great trunk space and is very roomy inside, even with DD's carseat.

Another question - we have one DS now, hoping for one more child in the (not too,too distant future =- maybe 18 mos?) - and we will probably keep whatever car we get for 8-9 years (at least). I wanted to look at smaller SUV's with 3rd row seats (basically the RAV4) or the Mazda 5 - thinking that if we have the car for 8 -9 years, at some point I am going to want to be able to cart more kids around.
Am I crazy for thinking about third-row seating at this point?
At this point, we still need to see them in person, but based on online research, I think we'd like to check out the following:
*Toyota RAV-4 (3rd row seating)
* Honda CR-V (no third row option)
*Mazda 5 (mini minvan - seats 6) - My FIL says he thinks Mazdas are not that great? Kind of plasticky on the inside?
*Mazda CX-9 (third row - probably out of price range)
* Hyundai Santa Fe (can't remember about third row right now! doh!)
Any thoughts on the third-row option and/or any of these cars? (or any other recs. for what to look at?)
Thanks!

Ladybug & Linekeli, thanks for both of your recommendations! I have heard great things about the Hylander, and the Volvo ALWAYS gets great reviews, so I will definitely look at both. We are leaning towards buying a year or two old model instead of new, but if the deals are right on new, we just may bite the bullet. I haven't had a brand new car in 14 years. :)

RobynScott--I have an 08 Rav4 Limited AWD with a 3rd row. I went with it over some of your other options because it did have the 3rd row and got better gas mileage than some of the other options. Here's my thoughts on it:
--if you aren't using the 3rd row it folds down and you have almost as much storage space as without. You lose the area the seats are taking up but really if you need that space you probably need a bigger vehicle. FWIW the Highlander is bigger but not much bigger and about the same price. You might consider the Highlander as well.
--If you slide the 2nd row up further the 3rd row has "reasonable" legroom. I wouldn't put a tall adult back there for longer than a short trip (under an hour maybe). I'm 5'4" and sat back there before we drove it and it was tolerable. The seat was reasonably comfortable--but it sits low and there isn't much leg room so if you have long legs your knees will most likely be in your chest to some extent. It does have shoulder belts and I think it had LATCH back there if I remember right.
--right now I have two carseats in the 2nd row and my oldest (he's 5) in the 3rd row with a belt positioning booster. He adores it and thinks he has tons of room. Because I have seats in both outboard positions in row 2 DS1 gets into his seat via the back door and I have half of the seat folded down (see picture below--in the picture I don't have his seat in yet and I did eventually slide the 2nd row up a few more inches so he had more leg room. I've been amazed at how much stuff I can get in the back with all 3 kids in. It's bigger than it looks.
--the windows in the 3rd row don't open but DS1 hasn't complained about it and hasn't complained of being cold in the winter so the ventilation must work adequately.
--my later plans when I can move DS2 to a belt positioning booster is possibly putting him in the back with DS1 (then we can use the 2nd row walk-thru feature to get to the seat instead of the back door) or put all 3 in the 2nd row.
--I don't know about now but when we were looking for a 3rd row Rav4 they were hard to find on the lot to check out. I'd call the dealer before you go out to make sure they have one on the lot.
--performance. We got the v6. It's touchy. Very touchy since I was previously used to 4 cylinders--took me a while to not have jackrabbit starts. But handles great. Gas mileage has been around 21/22 for my commute/errand running. If you took a long trip and kept it around 55 I'd say it would get probably 27 or so. handled ice and snow wonderfully this winter. I did seem to have to run the blended heat/defrost though otherwise the windows fogged up. Also the wipers if they got any buildup of ice at all became worthless so I had to make sure to clean them off very well if it snowed. Other than the wiper thing it's actually been the best winter vehicle I've ever had.
Here's a picture of the 3rd row half up while I was installing seats the night I brought it home. I eventually moved the 2nd row up a bit further, laid the center cup holder down so DS1 can see to the front better and put a bumper cover over the back so he doesn't scratch it up climbing in and out.

Robyn - When we were car shopping (end of 2007) we found that the "3rd Row" in all SUV's was just too cramped and not very practical and they cut down on the some of the interior space on the 2nd row. If you are tied to getting a 3rd row, I would definitely consider a really big SUV (like a Sequoia or a Expedition) or a minivan. I also found that the smaller Crossovers (RAV4/CRX) weren't big enough. That's just my two cents though! In the end our decision was between the CX-9 (without the 3rd row) and the Murano. We just liked the way the Murano drove better (and the CX-9 was a little too big for me), so that made the decision very easy. I think the only way you will KNOW which car is going to work for you is to go out and test everything that fits your requirements. Time consuming, but definitely worthwhile to get a feel for everything.

I posted a few months back and DH and I just bought a 2009 Odyssey. I love it! DS loves it, whenever he sees it he says "Hello Auto" and when we get out he says "Byebye Auto"...too cute. At this point we removed the middle seat of the 2nd row, moved the passenger 2nd row over and put DS there. I think when the twins come we'll move that seat back over and leave the "Airplane aisle" (as the salesman called it) and put the twins in the 2nd row and DS in the middle of the back row (that would use all of the anchor points). I realize that limits us to who can actually get in the back row as they'd have to crawl in and down the airplane aisle. It'll be a trial and error I'm sure. The other option would be to take out all but one seat in the 2nd row for DS, and put the twins in the back (using seatbelts).

BusyBee21 - Sorry I never saw your post! I really love my Murano. I didn't want anything huge, but the CRV and RAV4 were a bit too small. The Murano is has a very spacious interior, IMO, bigger than what you initially think. We have a 2007 SL model with a rear camera (basically, the only feature it doesn't have is the GPS and AWD)- the last model before they updated the exterior/interior. I'm not 100% sure what they changed. I know they redesigned the front exterior and added a few more toys to the interior. I think most of the "important parts" (engine, transmission, etc) are still the same. It has a CVT (continuously variable transmission), which I think people either love or hate. I haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood) and I love that I can't feel my car shifting gears. It's just one big smooth ride! I think it's going to be perfect for 2 kids - but if I want 3, I'll definitely have to get a bigger car. Oh and gas mileage is decent (especially compared to the Jeep we used to have). I generally get 20-21 mph - more on the highway. Oh, and it's on the same platform as the Maxima and Altima, so it really feels like you are driving a car (just higher off the ground).
mia's mama - I have heard good things about the Sequoia and it definitely looks spacious! I will probably go that route if we decide to have 3 kids. I just can't give in to the minivan :)

mia's mama - we bought a 2008 sequoia (traded in our 4runner) at the end of october and so far we love it! we're expecting #3 any day now, but bought back in the fall when toyota had all those cash back and rebate incentives. it was a great deal since they were really pushing the big SUVs out the door.
we went with a fully loaded SR5, so no captain's chairs in the second row, but it is wide enough that we can fit all three car seats in the second row (two britax marathons and the peg infant car seat) without feeling like they're on top of one another. and since the second row seats are split (not a bench), the seats slide forward and allow access to the third row. compared to the 4runner, we can't believe how much room we have and can't imagine squeezing in to buckle the girls in. it's been great since we have room for the grandparents in the third row and don't have to take two cars everywhere. also the doors open 90 degrees, so if you have the room, it's really easy getting in and out, especially the third row.
but, obviously, the car is huge and we often have trouble with parking spaces even out here in the 'burbs of chicago. car washes, bank atms, and drive thrus can also be a little claustrophobic.
overall, we love the car and have no regrets! :)

I rode in a coworkers Murano last summer. I will admit it was quite nice and seemed roomier inside than my Rav4 but I can't say I often ride in the backseat of my Rav4 for a true comparison.
Does anyone have the Nissan Armada? We looked at it today and may be able to get an AMAZING deal....

We got a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid about a month ago, and I'm quite happy with it. We have a lease on a mini-van that's up in less than a year, and I really didn't want to get another van, but we needed something that was going to fit the family, as we may try to be a one car family for a while (dh does not need a car for work, and we rarely use our second car). I'd been looking at Highlanders for a while, simply because I really wanted a Hybrid. Since there aren't any minivans out (or even scheduled in the next year, that I know of) that are hybrids, our selection wasn't huge.
We have the 3rd row seat, and while I've ridden back there on a short trip, there's no way that I'd want to spend much time back there... but it's PERFECT for my kids. DS#1 is 5.5 and will be almost 6 when dc#3 arrives in the fall, and ds#2 will be 4 in May. I figure even if we have this car for 5+ years, I'll still have a 3rd kid that would easily fit in that back seat, even if my then 10ish year olds wouldn't want to.
Cargo room might be a problem, but we made sure to get one with a roof rack since we have one of those things to put on top for vacations and such.

Looking for a car/van that seats 7. I have the Highlander now and really love it, but hoping for No. 3 and more room (three kids in car seats). I like to ride high (no need for 4x4) so a wagon is out for me.
And...I'd like to not be a LLIABT (Little Lady in a Big Truck) so I was considering a 4-Runner but the Sequoia scares me. Edited to add: I don't want to spend more than $25k and would buy used!!
Thoughts?

Meatpie - I am sure there are lots of suggestions. Would you be willing to consider a Hyundai? I wanted to check out a Hyundai Veracruz.
Also, Highlander. We just saw a (new) '08 one for $26K ($2k cash back bringing it down to $26) so I'd bet you could fund used in your range. 3rd row Rav-4? Pilot?
We were looking, but since DH's car didn't need as many repairs as we feared, I think we're going to hold off on a new car purchase for a while. Would have been nice, but not 'necessary' for us, so we're going to wait a little longer.

meatpie - i LOVE our toyota sienna. yes, it's a minivan, but it seats 7 with plenty of leg room & storage space. we got a fully loaded one about 1.5 yrs old in excellent condition. it rides well and i LOVE the automatic doors / trunk.
it's just so convenient for us...we plan on having 3 kids, plus we have a big dog who we are often carting around, too...the minivan seemed the best route to go for us. DH and i are both super happy with it. if i'm not mistaken, we paid 20K for it.

Jenyfer9 -- Glad to hear you like you Highlander Hybrid. We are seriously considering one.
Anyone else care to weigh in on the Highlander? We have one child and hope to have another within the next 1-2 years, so we want a car that is comfortable for a family of 4 (plus a dog). For personal and professional reasons (my DH works in the clean energy industry), we really need a hybrid or something with great fuel efficiency. That seems to leave us with the Highlander Hybrid or the Lexus SUV hybrid. My mom has the Lexus hybrid and loves it, but I don't feel like it's worth the price increase over the highlander.
Any other suggestions? Highlander or Lexus reviews?

amew--really I can't say I was that impressed with the fuel efficiency of the highlander hybrid over the regular hybrid for the price difference. Yes supposedly it gets better but if I remember right it was like a $10-15K price increase for a lousy 3-5 mpg but I might be wrong--it's been about 2 years since I looked at it.

We got a 2009 Saturn Outlook last September (it's the same exact platform as the GMC Acadia) and love it. It's big enough to fit DH and I (who are tall) plus two car seats with room in the 3rd row for any additional passengers. We've taken a few longish trips in it to see family and it's fit all the stuff we need (bags, PnP, dog, etc...) just fine. It drives great and doesn't feel too big at all. I think the MPG is good, but it's mostly driven in the city right now. Plus it's winter and we don't have a garage, so we've been starting and letting it warm up in the morning, so it seems low. When it warms up it'll be better.

We had a Jeep Liberty CRD (diesel) before the Outlook and we loved it. We would have kept it forever if we hadn't outgrown it. It got awesome MPG (30 highway!) and was great to drive. If there's a larger SUV/crossover diesel option in the next 5-10 years I'm sure DH will want to trade up to that. Especially since we can get soy biodiesel at many pumps in our state.

I do so wish they would sell more diesels over here. Even if they were special order. Especially with the biodiesel option now available. But the American population didn't embrass them too well...though the ones out there hold their value really really well.

Anyone have a Subaru Tribeca? Thoughts? I'm considering that vs. a Sienna. I don't have one but we test drove them last year and I loved it. The Boxer engine is super-zippy and I didn't feel like I was driving a large vehicle. It felt manuverable like a car. Also had the best turn-radius of all the vehicles we test drove (CX9, Acadia, Enclave, etc.) and I would say, to me, it was the most fun to drive of all of them. The 3rd row seat was small though - similar to what comes in a Highlander or Acura MDX. I liked the interior but DH felt the seats weren't very comfortable (i disagreed)
Also, we drove the Sequoia and it felt like a huge, ginormous tank. It also felt "truck-y" inside which is not surprising given it's based on the full-size Tundra platform.

We're looking at Acadias right now and they're offering killer rebates or 0% financing. It's too bad that you can't use them both. You can get one of the lower trim levels for around that price. I'm really excited because I found one that's a lower trim level, but has a few packages added on that give it a decent amount of options (even remote start) and the dealer quoted me $31,690. And that's without rebates, we would be able to use 0% financing. If we took rebates, the price came down to $27,994!! So do some calling around to local dealers, see what they have. You may be able to find something, depending on how loaded you want the car to be.
I also drove a Traverse the other day, which is the Chevy version of the Acadia/Outlook/Enclave. Nice car and you can get it pretty decently equipped for $30ish.

We have a Honda Pilot (had a Grand Cherokee before) and I love it. We haven't used the 3rd row seat yet, but it is nice to know we have it if we need to, now that #2 is almost here, we can still go places with both my parents all in one car. We don't intend to have 3 kids or a dog, so we don't see a need for 3 rows very often. Before I decided on the Pilot I was seriously considering a Sequoia - I love them but I just didn't have the $.
DH has a Jetta that we had been hoping to trade in for a CRV, but with the economy we are loving not having a car payment for him right now. But it stinks because we are stuck driving just my car on the weekends meaning it will wear out faster. As it is now it is going to be uncomfortable for him to drive the 2 kids 1 mile to daycare in the Jetta.

newmommy Or anyone else considering the Acadia. Just wanted to let you know that we brought home an Acadia today for $30,690 (before trade). It has the two captain's chairs in the second row, power everything, remote start, steering wheel controls, rear temp controls. It's the SLE, the lowest trim level (with a couple of packages added), but I don't feel like it's lacking in anything. I used to drive a loaded Grand Cherokee Limited and I really don't miss all of those little extra bells and whistles that drive the price up so high. I feel like this one is perfectly well-equipped for me. That's a personal preference, though. I will admit that I miss heated leather seats, but that's the trade-off to being a SAHM for me. And it's well worth it. :)

Last I checked, the hybrid VUE was only like 10% more fuel efficient than the conventional model. Hopefully they've improved since then.
I have a regular VUE and it gets really good gas mileage, but it doesn't have that "clean" reputation you're looking for.

I could have sworn I posted this reply already...oh well.
I've just started seriously driving/pricing the Acadia/Outlook/Traverse/Enclave series. I've had my heart set on an Acadia since they came out - I just really like the body style. My absolute requirement is the 2-2-3 seating, leather, and a front sunroof.
Last week I drove a Traverse as it's the closest dealership to me and got some figures. Overall, the interiors of all four are exactly the same but I can't say I was thrilled about the body style. We went for a spin and it drove really well. We went in to run some numbers and I was quoted $34000 for a fully loaded Traverse. All leather, 2-2-3 seating, heated front seats, DVD player, front and rear sunroof. This did include the employee discount I get from my grandfather and also 0% financing.
I looked at the Enclave but didn't bother to drive it. I ruled it out right away because they pretty much want more money for fancy trim - it just wasn't worth it to me. I'm planning to make a trip to drive an Acadia again (drove one back before I was getting serious) and also an Outlook plus get numbers on both.
Luckily, I'm not in a hurry to buy. My current car (a Malibu) is paid off and not really worth anything on trade in so I think we'll keep it as an extra car. Because of this I really plan to do some serious shopping on prices. It seems as all the cars they find with my three requirements also have DVD & GPS which I don't really need/want. If they found one with just GPS for a good prices I'd take it, but I refuse to be sold one with those things just so they can make more money.

We just found out we are expecting baby #3 in September and our Mazda Tribute will not hold a double stroller plus extra cargo, let alone 3 carseats. We are seriously considering purchasing the Honda Pilot but can not find info on someone that has 3 young kids in carseats all in the 2nd row and would like to hear from someone with first hand experience.
My DS (4.5) is currently in a Britax Marathon that will expire by the time he is 6. My daughter (9 months) is also in a Marathon. I was thinking I could put Ds in a Sunshine Radian 80 in the center, keep DD in the Marathon RF, and have the new baby in a Chicco Keyfit to start then more the new baby to a Radian 80 when needed. Is there anyone that has 3 in the 2nd row and can give me some insight? Will this work?
Thanks. :)

We have toyed briefly with the idea of a diesel, but haven't really followed through on it yet. I think it's definitely worth some more serious exploration--I will look into how hard it would be to get an XC60. We have access to biodiesel a couple places around here, which would be nice. And DH has a couple big biodiesel clients that would be very pleased.
We have looked at the hybrid Vues a little, but we like the extra room in the Highlander.
We test drove a Highlander yesterday and really liked it. It feels very roomy inside and has a third-row seat option, but I didn't feel like I was driving a giant truck around. The price difference in the hybrid is a lot to stomach--it ends up being about $9000 for an extra 6-7 miles or so per gallon. But there is a $2000 cash back incentive right now on hybrids if you get an '08, so that would close the gap some.

We have the Hylander Hybrid 2006. We love it. We also drive a diesel Jetta station Wagon. I have 2 kids and 2 big labs. We all fit. In fact this Christmas we all piled in with toys, suitcases etc. We got a softtop baggage holder for the suitcases and pack n' play, but mostly because we had a ton of toys for the boys. The 3rd row is small for sure. Adults can fit back there, but not for long travel. Kids in car seats or teens would fit fine. We usually don't need it, but it is nice to have the option when family comes into town to squeeze in.
Mileage - I get consistently 26-28mpg. We have gotten in the 30's before, but not often.
I will also add that we bought ours because it was a dealers car - they drove it for 6 months before they sold it. That knocked off about 6-7k and so it put us in the range of a regular one. We also got the rebate that helped more. It was a no brainer for us at the time. We also looked at the RAV4, but the dealer option quickly put us in the hylander. Let me know if you have more questions. We have had no maintenance except regular oil changes, new tires and a new battery. Knock on wood!

Maggie8202 - my DH has a Tahoe hybrid and loves it. It's bigger than some of the other vehicles mentioned on here, so I think it is up to you on your size threshold, but I don't think it is too big to drive regularly. It drives more like a car and is easy to maneuver - I don't feel like I'm driving this big huge vehicle either (this is coming from someone who just traded in a G35 coupe too). There is a middle bench that seats 3 and the flip down third row seats 2 I believe. DS's car seat fits in there fine too.

Thanks for the feedback. Currently I drive an 06 BMW X5 and my lease is coming to an end. The new body style of the X5's just don't do it for me and when we think about our future with having another child and traveling with our golden we seem to think we need a little more room. I think I need to take it for a test drive, but am happy to hear that you are comfortable driving it. I have read the interiors of the 09's are really well done. I don't have 3 carseats in our Pilot (and don't intend to!) - we haven't even gotten to use 2 quite yet. But a co-worker does it, though I haven't seen it in action. But when I saw it, he had 2 FF and an infant seat (not in the middle - had it on one end). I am just trying to invision how you would get the child into the RF easily. Or are you going to have the infant seat in the middle? I guess you could do that and lift the infant seat over the FF seat to lock it in, but that seems like that could get back breaking pretty easily but definitely doable.

Since DS is least protected I guess it would be safest for him to be in the middle but I don't think he would be able to get past DD's RF Marathon so he may end up on the other side seat. Does that sound ok?

I had my son's infant seat (RF) on the side behind the passenger seat, then I had a Marathon in the middle and a Marathon behind the drivers side, both FF.

I have a Mazda 5 and LOVE it! It has third row seating and sliding doors (which I love). It seats 6 - 2 per row. There is under the seat storage, the seats fold flat. The second row seats adjust just like the front row seats (lean back, move forward and backward etc). It's lower to the ground and gets good gas mileage compared to the larger SUVs/minivans. I get 24MPG in town and up to 30MPG on the highway. I like that it's not huge but has a lot of the minivan features.
ETA... The second row seats have TONS of leg room. My dad who is 6'2" can sit back there very comfortably. I can sit in the third row fine (I'm 5'4") but probably wouldn't want to sit back there for long distances. We've had kids back there with convertable carseats with no problem.

mia's mama We looked at the Suburban, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoias but ended up with a Ford Expedition. I've posted my write-up about it below. I have to say that I LOVE this car. Also, it seats 8 as we have two bench seats. This past Christmas we had my husband and I, my parents, my grandma ad three kids in carseats in it and it was still comfortable for everyone.
This is pretty much what mine looks like http://webiol.homenetinc.com/dealers...8422/12914.jpg, except mine is a carbon color.

Anyone have thoughts on 2 kids and a sedan?
I just started doing it recently - DS is 6 weeks old. They are both outboard in their carseats (can't get one to work in the middle of my Passat), so the whole backseat is not usable for anything but hauling kids. But, honestly, I don't have a problem with a sedan and 2 kids. I keep our stroller (a pretty big full-size one) in the trunk, but still have room for groceries back there or in the front seat.
I personally prefer a sedan and people told me there was "no way" I could make it work. I had so many people ask me when we were getting an SUV when I was pg. But so far, it seems to be working just fine. Eventually I'll take the stroller out of the trunk and be able to reclaim even more room.

Ditto this. (Well, except all of my friends drive minivans.) We have an SUV because we need space for our dogs.
I think that if you don't have plans for a #3 while you have the vehicle, a sedan is a great choice. (I know that sedans will work with 3, too, but I think it gets pretty crowded. I drive a VUE - so it's a pretty small SUV - and we get pretty full with 3 kids and all their stuff.)
I would go for the sedan also, providing you won;t need to transport more than 3 kids. We had an Accord and a Civic when DC#2 was born and they both had plenty of room. But then the civic died (was ~15 years old) so we replaced it with a minivan as we are planning on more kids, and down the line I will have to drive a big carpool (my 2 + 3 others).

Anyone drive a Suburban,
I do. We bought it when #3 was 6 weeks old. I like it OK but would rather have a mini-van. DH refuses though.

Bump!
Anyone drive a Suburban, Nissan Armada or Toyota Sequoia?
I'm looking for options that seat 7 that are not a mini-van....TIA!
We have a Suburban and LOVE it. We have 3 kids (close to the age of yours) and also have a golden retriever. When we travel there is plenty of room for everyone. DS is in the 3rd row with the dog and the girls are in the middle. Tons of cargo room.
My dad has an Infiniti something - it's the same as the Armada. The leg room doesn't seem as good as the Suburban but otherwise it's nice.

We're looking for an SUV/Crossover. I need to be able to get at least 3 car seats in the back (looking to add #3 in the spring). I'm open to 3 seats, but don't want anything huge like a Suburban. We've looked at the Mazda cx-7, and am thinking we should be able to get 3 car seats in the back. Any recommendations?

I have an Edge, which is basically the same as the CX7. I LOVE it. We looked at the CX7 as well and the only reason we chose the Edge was for personal feature preference.
As for carseats, I've never tried 3. But I can fit 2 Marathons and a 6 year old in my back seat with no problems. Or one Marathon and 2 adults. One thing I really like about it is that there is so much room between front and back that DD is still rear facing, reclined in a Marathon (so big seat) and the front seat can be all the way back and at a comfortable angle as well. I would think that would hold true for the Mazda as well.
One feature I have found to be really cool on the Edge that I never looked for on the Mazda (didn't know I would like it so much until I had it kind of thing) is the fact that the front passenger seat folds down flat. Makes a perfect changing table, snack table, etc. It might not be so handy with multiple kids but for us, it comes in very very handy.

Ugh, I just typed up a big post about all the other CUVs in the same class you should take a look at and the internet ate it. I'll try again after my 11:30 mtg.

If the CX-7 is truly like the Edge, I don't think there is any way possible you can fit three carseats in the back. I drive an Edge and DS1 is in a Regent behind me and DS2 is in a Marathon RF behind the passenger. I don't think even my skinny 14 year old nephew could fit between the two seats. I love my Edge, but I definitely hate that we can't carry any passengers other than our family. DH has an Explorer and it's almost the same. We crammed my 5'10" 16 year old niece in between the carseats once. She looked so uncomfortable! We're planning to get a Taurux X when DH's Explorer dies or my lease is up, whichever happens first. That is if Ford doesn't do away with it in favor of the Element (yuck!). You can get the option of two captain's chairs in the middle and a bench in the back. I like that it's essentially a station wagon and not a mini van or a huge SUV (I don't like driving something that big).

FWIW you can get 3 carseats across the back of a Honda Civic if you buy skinny carseats. Most small crossovers are built on the frames of smaller cars (the crv used to and probably still is built on the civic frame, the rav4 is most likely built on the corolla frame etc). So any small crossover SHOULD fit 3 carseats if you buy the right kind.
I have a 08 Rav4. I could not get 3 of the carseats I currently own across the 2nd row--I have a Triumph, a cosco Highback and a Evenflo Big kid booster. If I got something skinnier than the Triumph I could probably squeeze it in with the other two. But I got the 3rd row so DS1 is in the 3rd row (half folded down) with the Evenflo booster and DS2 and DD are in the 2nd row in the Triumph and Cosco seat.

Wrong ID! LOL!
I have a Mazda 5 and LOVE it! It has third row seating and will seat 6.
Our seating:
DS X Driver
X DD Psngr
We have the Britax Marathon in the way back and that's where DS sits for now. DD is in an infant seat. On the second row there is a space between the two seats (they aren't touching). There is tons of leg room between the 1st and 2nd rows. We could fit 2 Marathons in the 3rd row if we wanted to. We love that it has sliding doors live a minvan. It gets good gas mileage (23 or so in town and as much as 29-30 on long trips.

We have a Mazda 5 as well.
We have both kids in the middle row for everyday. We move one to the back row if we need more seats. Or, if I'm driving to lunch at work with 3 adults (including myself), someone just goes and sits in the back row. :p
I love that it's car sized and has sliding doors. Great family car!

I have read (on other sites) about people fitting 3 seats across the back of a Murano. One of those seats is usually a Radian (but not all).

We're trying to watch the price tag, which doesn't help much. We're looking at an 07 Cx7, but I want a darker color. I have not seen several of the cars mentioned. We're looking at buying a certified used car, not really wanting a new one.
DH is anti minivan or anything that looks like one. Is the Mazda 5 a minivan or suv or wagon?

My DH is very anti-minivan as well but he loves my car. It's really a cross between car/wagon/minivan. It's not an suv because it sits lower. The sliding doors are AWESOME for kids. They are super easy to load them in and out of and you don't have to worry about door dinging someone.
Cost - I think I paid 19K for mine brand new but if you bought used I'm sure you could get a great deal right now.
SiValleySteph - We have DS in the way back right now because I've had family in town for the last three weeks. I also like to sit next to DD (1 month old) when DH is driving so I can keep her happy. She doesn't care for the car seat much of the time. We will move him to the 2nd row in a few more weeks.

I'm hoping to buy a Mazda5 in the next few days. It is a neat car. isign, it is half wagon / half mini-van. Looking at the pictures online, it kinda looks like a minivan. But when you see it in person it looks like a wagon with sliding doors. ETA cost: I am buying the 09 Sport version for 17K.

WOW - great price. Here's the minivan/wagon thing. DH is GM for a custom tire/wheel store and wants something that he can play with, add wheels and such, and still look good. KWIM? I do like the way it looks, and now I wished we'd seen it yesterday when we were at the mazda dealership.

We did the same when DS2 was a baby and when the grandparents are in town! :) Love it!

DH's car is on its last leg (well, we've decided we don't want to put any more $$ into it) and need to buy something before the end of the month (won't pass inspection without serious $$).
We currently have a 2000 Jetta (being replacecd) and a 2005 CR-V. I am thinking we'd like to get something with a third row option, as we plan to keep this car as long as possible (hopefully 10 years, at least).
UNDER CONSIDERATION (so far, open to other suggestions)
4-Cyl Highlander w/third row
Rav-4 with third row
CR-V (if we forego third row option)
Mazda 5
eta: Used Honda Pilot (2007 or 2008 - so old body model)
We're looking at new simply for the best financing options, but would be willing to consider used too. Too bad 2.9% financing for used Highlanders just ended :( Looks like we'd be looking at 4.9% for used or for the Mazda 5. Maybe 3.9 for a new Rav4, but not sure we're going that way.
What else should we consider? Hoping to get a good financing deal and would like to keep it under $25K (well under is fine :D) if possible.
Question for those of you with the Mazda 5 - where do you put your carseats? It looks like some of you at least used the Third Row. I am wondering about when we have 2 in carseats (April), what happens if we want to transport someone else - how do you get to the Third Row? How do you (can you) put the second row seat down to get to the third row with two carseats in the second row?
Also, do you miss having the third seat in the second row? Is there any storage room at all with the third row up? When DH and I checked it out, seemed like there would be no room with the third row up - but felt so small with just the 4 seats and 2 adults, 2 carseats. I do like that we can get a nice model for less $$ than anything else we are looking at.
ETA - Anyone deal with the Mazda5 in the snow? We don't (usually) get a lot, but when we do, I wany something that handles well - especially since I have to take a windy road to get to the train I take to work.
Thanks! (off to re-read this thread - and see that I asked the same types of questions in February :o)

We just bought a 2006 Acura MDX this fall. It has the third row option and can fit 3 across the second row. I've had a boulevard, roundabout and a high back booster in the second row before.
When #3 arrives we'll put our oldest in the 3rd row just because I think it's asking for trouble to have them all right next to each other. :p
There's not a lot of trunk space when both third row seats are up, but you can use it with only seat up.
As for getting to the third row...You have to either lift the second row seat or climb through the back.
I LOVE my car, but had I been absolutely certain we were having a third when we were shopping, I would have gone with a minivan. :o

RobynScott--My husband and I are searching for a car too. We looked at Honda Pilots and were going to buy a new 2008...well it had 600 miles on it...it was a demo, but someone beat us to the punch. We are now searching again for a car due to the fact that our one car is on its last leg. We looked at the Toyota Highlander with the third row option and there was ZERO leg room...it was horrible. It was even uncomfortable for my nieces. We are now looking at the Toyota Sienna, but I am not loving the idea of getting a minivan. I know for practical reasons it makes sense, but totally NEVER thought I would get a minivan!!
We tried out the CR-V, but felt like it was too small and was the equivalent of a car...so that was out, same with RAV-4.
Another SUV we looked at was the GMC Acadia, which I really liked, but the price was terrible!! We figured for the price we would rather buy a Toyota or Honda which has a better re-sale value.
Keep me posted on what you think...I hate shopping for a new car!!

Thanks Beth and jmvan! Beth, we are seriously looking at the Hyundai Veracruz right now - third row option (and I think it's bigger than the Highlander), and nicely appointed. I'll let you know. We're hoping to get a good year end deal. I've been getting price quotes off of cars.overstock.com which I've really been liking as you can get some seriously low quotes - and then bring to the dealer you want to work with. (and the quotes are for local dealers). We're also looking at a used Pilot and the Mazda5.
PS - I'm not sure of the price on the Acadia, but I do think it's higher than the entry level Veracruz. HTH!
Robyn -- We bought a Highlander almost a year ago, and we LOVE it. It has been great for roadtrips with DS, the dog, and all our gear, and I think it will serve us well when DS2 gets here. I have been in the third row several times (and my mom and I sat in there for a six hour trip a few months ago), and I think the leg room situation is okay (and I'm 5'7" with fairly long legs). It isn't fabulously comfortable or anything, but I think it's fine for a third row.
We have the hybrid, and the gas mileage is great for such a big car, which I really like.

Just to report back, we bought a Veracruz yesterday! Got a great deal on a 2010. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts in a few months, but for an affordable suv/cuv with a third row option, I'd highly recommend looking into it. With our trade (a ten year old car with over $100K miles), we probably got it for what we would have paid for a CRV or Rav4 (or a Mazda 5 Grand Touring).
