Welcome to the CC Coupon Train! This is a coupon exchange group for all of us that would like to save money on groceries, household items, pet food, baby items, etc.

HOW IT WORKS:
You will receive a packet of coupons at least once every 4 weeks from the person above you in the train. When you receive the envelope, take out any coupons you want. Then, put the rest in an envelope, add the ones you've been saving (from your newspaper, etc.), and send them on to the person below you on the train. Also, BE SURE AND POST WHEN YOU SEND AND RECEIVE so that we can make sure all parts of the train are running smoothly. It's not fair for certain train members to send coupons without receiving some in return. The only way for me to keep track is for you to post when you send/receive your coupons.

HOW TO JOIN:
If you would like to join the train, please post in this thread and send me a PRIVATE MESSAGE through my profile. Include your CC user name, full name, and mailing address. I will contact you with your buddy's information and an updated train member list will be posted on this thread (names will be added in groups every Friday, so don't worry if you don't see it up for a few days). It's that simple!

Coupon Train Rules
1. You must send out a minimum of 1 envelope of coupons per month.

2. You must post to this thread when you send and receive coupons. Anyone who has not posted in 4 weeks will be removed from the train. I hate to be snotty about it, but this is the best way to regulate and make sure that everyone is receiving their fair share of coupons. A database is kept where I can keep track of postings and make sure everyone is sending/receiving regularly.

3. If you do not receive coupons at least once per month, please PRIVATE MESSAGE me.

4. If I am notified that you are not sending coupons at least once per month, you will be removed from the train. You can e-mail me later to be put back on the train, but only if you can keep up.

5. Please go through the coupons and take out any that have expired or will expire before your buddy receives them.


FAQ

Where do I find coupons to send?
The easiest way to find coupons is through your Sunday newspaper. You can also ask friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to save the coupon sections of their newspapers for you (They can cut out what coupons they want first and pass the rest on to you). You can also buy coupons on e-bay. You can usually find large packets of coupons for fairly cheap. You can also find coupons for specific brands/items on e-bay, which is always helpful. Just do an e-bay search for "coupons" and browse around. Always take the coupons from the little "blinkey" machines at the grocery store, too. Most of them can't be doubled, but they're still nice to have!

Can we send store coupons (good only at Babies-R-Us, etc.)?
Store coupons are fine. Even if the store doesn't have a location where your buddy lives, she can pass the coupons on, and someone down the train can probably use them.

How many coupons should I send in each envelope?
However many you want! There is no hard and fast rule, but at least 50 coupons is pretty standard (equals approximately one Sunday paper worth of coupons). Be sure and have the envelope weighed at the post office before you send it to ensure you have enough postage to cover it.

I just joined the train. Should I send coupons to my buddy now, or wait until I receive some?
As long as you send coupons at least once every 4 weeks, you'll be fine. It's always nice to send coupons as often as you can so that we can keep the train moving, so feel free to send a packet out as soon as you receive your buddy's address.

Postage (as suggested by Liz - SingleWhiteFemale)
If you're not having metered postage (the little white printout that the post office issues, the PVI thing) done, invest in a packet of $0.23 stamps (they sell them by the sheet of 20, and in books of 10) and be familiar with the postage rates.

For example, don't stick 2 $0.37 stamps on an envelope! It is only $0.60 to send a 1.1-2 oz packet. Also, as a general rule, 50 sunday insert coupons is an ounce (and sometimes less) So if a person doesn't want to weigh it, 50 and under clipped from the paper only requires 1 stamp, $0.37.

I've been saving coupons for portraits (like Sears) and restaurants (Friendlies, Olive Garden). Figured that someone might be able to make use out of them.

I'm also saving ones I get in the mail from GNC, and would have sent on my Bed Bath and Beyond one but my friend confiscated it. :)

I used my coupons for the first time yesterday, and with the combination with my MVP store discount card and coupons, I saved over $37.00!!!

Not dumb at all! This is my first time really getting into couponing also.

I'm getting most of mine from our Sunday paper. Usually there are 2 fliers of coupons, and I cut out every single one. I keep the ones I know I'll use, then send the rest on. You could get 50-100 coupons from one Sunday paper.

When I'm in the store, I've been pulling coupons from those holders that they have in the aisles (you know, the ones that advertise a certain product?). I send those on too.

We'll get fliers in the mail for pizza places also. I'm going to start cutting and sending those off too.

I'm sure there are other places to get coupons, but I'm keeping my "search" low key because I just don't have the time to hunt for them.

Magazines sometimes have coupons in them (I get a lot of baby type ones from the parenting type mags). Also some products come with coupons-our cat food always comes with coupons, the scented oil plug ins always come with coupons, etc.

So true! I signed up at the Huggies site and I got 2 awesome freebie packs with samples of their bath and body products, 2 diapers, AND coupons! I get coupons in the mail from them all the time, too.

Also, check out the coupons and freebies thread (http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=948)-tons of offers in their for coupons. It only takes a minute or two to sign up or maybe a few more if you have to fill out a survey.

As for orginizing them I seperate them by household items(cleaning stuff, toilet paper etc), personal items-shampoos, deodrant, froz food, b-fast stuff, baby stuff, canned goods, spices,sauces, snacks, froz. dessert.

Just a clarification new participants and the buddy list:

If you are new to this thread and interested in joining, please post your request here and Private Message or Email ISIGN with your name and address.

Each Friday the participant list will be updated to incorporate anyone new in our group.

Anyone with a buddy change will be emailed or Private Messaged with their new buddy's name and address. You will send coupons to your new buddy only AFTER you have received their information and their name has been added to the participation list (please check it weekly).

In order to keep the train running smoothly, please only email ISIGN with your name & address. She is keeping all the information, and logging send/receive posts to ensure that everyone is participating.

Remember, you must send out at least one envelope of coupons PER MONTH. Anyone not doing the minimum will be deleted from the train.

Coupon Organization:

Being new to this coupon-clipping craziness myself, I ordered a Coupon Wallet (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5408544208&category=45259&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1) from Ebay a couple weeks ago. I LOVE IT!!

Not only is it roomy enough to hold a lot of coupons, but it has a calculator, pen holder, place for your checkbook, and all sorts of other compartments. Fortunately I carry a large purse, but it can always be left in your car for when you stop by the store.

It cost me about $15 including shipping, and I totally think it's worth it.

ETA: I use a regular magnetic shopping list posted on the fridge, but last night I incorporated it to the list provided with this coupon holder. Since it's divided into sections, it saved me so much time! I wasn't going back and forth from area to area because I forgot something.

Ooh, that coupon wallet is nice! I just have a plastic one that has the different sections in it. I can't remember where I got it, though. I had to title my own sections and I did it like this:

If you give your buddy a "heads up" that coupons are coming, please also post on the ACTUAL day that you send out your coupons. It is being monitored so that nobody is left hanging.

I notice that many of us are holding coupons for the weekends...which is great. If you buddy happens to change while you are holding them, go ahead and send them to your original buddy, then send to your new buddy the next time.

Example: Your buddy is currently "Angelina" and you have a few coupons, but are waiting for Sunday's paper to send them off. However, "Uma" is assigned as your new buddy on Friday. Go ahead and send your coupons to Angelina, but the next round will go to Uma.

I don't know about the monthly idea because I don't understand it, but I have been thinking about something else...
Wouldn't it be easier just to add new members onto the end of the list instead of sticking them in alphabetically? That way buddies would not keep changing all the time. For example, I know I have a new coupon buddy, but I have not gotten her address yet. I sent my August coupons to my old buddy because I am being induced soon. Since I already sent them, I didn't plan on sending coupons out again until September. Now I feel like I need to send coupons to my new buddy this month once I get her address, but as of right now, I have hardly any coupons to send and I still don't know when I'll get around to sending them out because of the induction. Not to mention the fact that I'd *really* rather not have several different people having my address if my buddy keeps changing.

Just some thoughts I've had. I'm not complaining, I swear. I don't know how the train was run at "the other place", so I'm no expert by any means. :o

I agree with Leslie and I believe that's how the train is done at the other site. So I personally think it would be easier on everyone including Isign and Kimberland if you did it that way.

As for the montly thing, I don't quite understand it myself so not sure how it would work.

I started just opening my end and adding people - much easier, but some people were getting mixed up since we had the ABC order listed at the top of the first page. So I went back and put it all back in ABC order, which is why we recently had the changes.

Monthly - Just my opinion, but I would do it similar to the TTC/TTA threads. You'd still be a member we'd just move to a new thread with less pages. When either myself or Kimberland moved the thread then we would put a link in the bottom of the old thread saying we'd moved. I think it might be a bit easier since there are so many pages. We don't have to do that, it's just an idea.

Starting this week, any new participant will be added to the END of the coupon train list. Hopefully that will ease any confusion in that your buddy won't have the potential to change every week (unless someone drops out).

New participants will be added each Friday. Anyone wanting to join should send Isign a Private Message with their name and address. Isign will send a Private Message to all concerned buddies of the addition.

Med12: Please PM me your idea about the monthly coupon train because I'm not sure I understand it. From your post, I assume that each month the Coupon Train that we are posting to will close, and another will open starting with the participants list. Then we'll post to that one until the end of the month. While this will make each thread shorter and easier to read, I don't know if it will help or make things more confusing. Or maybe I'm just confused! :) We'll take a poll on it and see what everyone's thoughts are on this before setting it up that way. I have permission from Katy that a Mod will close threads that we are no longer using...if we go that route.

There have been a lot of changes since the inception of the Coupon Train a month ago. I want to apologize for any confusion, numerous posts about the "rules", numerous changes, and so forth. I want to thank you all for being so patient and sticking with the train even though it has gotten a bit confusing at times. I appreciate all the tips and suggestions that have been brought forward.

However, I want to send out a gentle reminder to post in this thread when you SEND and RECEIVE coupons. I'm going to start a log of send/receive dates to ensure the train is running smoothly. I apologize for not starting one at the beginning, it was an oversight on my part. There are members who have not received coupons since the train began, and having a log will keep it running smoothly.

Right now it's set up that participants mail out coupons to their buddy once a month. I see that most members are sending theirs out weekly. In that regard, maybe we should change it to every 2 weeks instead of once a month. I know, I know...another change. But please offer your thoughts!

That sounds good to me. But do we have to send 50 coupons both times? Or we can do 25 coupons each times?

Are coupons for certain stores like Walmart/Target/CVS or restaurants like Bennigans/Olive Garden, etc ok? (depending if the person has the store in their location) ?

IMO I don't think it would be a problem to keep it at a mandatory 4 weeks but also okay for those who send more than once a month. For example I just sent an envelope out last Monday. I just got a bunch of coupons from my buddy and a bunch expire at the end of the month so I'll send out another envelope at the end of this week. This way coupons don't go to waste.

I don't mind sending more than once a month but I also don't mind if my buddy only does it once a month kwim.

Plus it's an extra way to DS out of the house. He likes the post office. :D

I agree with this. Sometimes its hard to get enough to be worth sending out every two weeks depending on what the papers are like and its nicer if we have the option of doing it more than once a month but not HAVING to.

Just one more thing (for right now LOL), in your post when you get/send out coupons, if you use your buddy's IRL name could you also include their User Name? There are a few of us with duplicate names.
