Hi there!
Here is a GREAT website that I used when getting started on SBD - this link points directly to a list of foods allowed during phase one: Phase One Shopping/Food List (http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/shoppinglist_p1.htm)
The list shows other beans, but does not list red beans specifically, so I'm not sure. A google search may turn up a better answer on that one.
As for PB, it's recommended that you have natural peanut butter because it does not contain sugar. Sugar and added fat should be avoided.
I'll probably be posting loads in here because I need to get back on track with my diet, so I'll be here for support!
Good luck!

Polkadot...
Congratulations on starting SB! :D I started on May 9th and the first two weeks I lost 14.5 pounds! That was including walking 20 miles a week! The plan does work if you stick with it!
I will be here watching your pounds melt off!! :)
Moni
Mom2Cole WOW!! Congrats on losing the weight. That seems like so much for just two weeks!
For all that have tried the SBD, is it hard to follow? Do you find yourself hungry or unsatisfied? I am really thinking of trying it to get back in shape. I was previously on a medication that caused me to gain 30 pounds!!!
sublime311 Thanks for all those links!! That will be my evening reading!!

Hey Evie!
You're most welcome! All those websites really helped me. I think SBD is the easiest diet I've ever followed. The "rules" are just common sense stuff that we know already but never applied. Basically, it's:
1. Stay away from refined flours/sugars (choose whole grains and sugar substitutes instead)
2. Eat tons of fresh veggies (with some limitations)
3. Low-glycemic index whole fruits
4. Low-fat cuts of meat, poultry and fish and other proteins (eggs, beans, soy, etc)
5. Low-fat dairy
6. You MUST snack (such as low-fat string cheese, lean deli meats, nuts, etc.)
Of course, Phase 1 (first 2 weeks) of the diet is pretty limited (no fruit, no grains). After the first few days my carb cravings went away and I was feeling COMPLETELY satisfied! In Phase 2 you can start to add the carbs back in (in moderation, of course!).
If you haven't already, I would HIGHLY recommend the SBD book. It really goes into great detail (don't worry, it's interesting!) about why we should be eating like this.
I hope you enjoy exploring those sites!
BIG hugs!
K.

Can anyone tell me if lentils are allowed in Phase One? I love Progresso Lentil Soup but I can't find any lentils on the lists except for green lentils. The ones I eat are brown??

I tried Atkins before and lost a bunch of weight but since have gained it back and going back does not sound appealing. I've heard that SBD is better and a little easier to stick with. Does anyone have any opinions on this?? TIA!

South Beach Diet is definitely easier to stick with, simply because it's not as restrictive as Atkins is. I lost alot of weight on SBD and have pretty much kept it off for two years now. Although, recently, thanks to my recent wedding and then pigging out on our honeymoon, I am going back on Phase One.
Can I join? I really need to try something different. I like the SBD because it seems like a pretty normal way of eating--I assume your body would not get completely freaked out like it does on a low carb diet. Or a low calorie diet. I don't want the diet backlash but I would like to lose weight in a slow and healthy way.
I have the SBD book and would like to try it--but I don't want to become a crazed food freak. I've already lost a nice amount weight by avoiding sugar and totally eating ANYTHING else I wanted...but I'm having trouble right now. I'd like to go lower fat. So I thought I would try the SBD...but not in a obsessive way.
Also, according to the website I am not supposed to do Phase 1 because I am breastfeeding.
I'd like to start with a kind of restrictive Phase II and then move on from there.
So question: Is popcorn always out? When can you do popcorn? If ever.
sublime311
07-13-2005, 06:59 AM
Hey Miel!
I think popcorn is a food to avoid or eat rarely because it has a medium (55)glycemic index number. If you're going to include popcorn occasionally, I think the best bet would be to make it yourself (not the microwavable kind) with a little bit of oil, skip the butter and salt. What's the point, huh? lol
Here is a thread I started with the glycemic index (http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=1276) of several foods.
BTW ladies, I found this pretty cool website that covers the three phases pretty well, but she calls it the "Sensible Eating For Life Plan" (or SEL). I'm sure that it is based on the SBD. She follows the glycemic index like SBD, so I think it would be ok for us to use it as a reference. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for Phase info:

I am a complete microwave popcorn freak. I lost a total of 32 pounds on SBD, and I added microwave popcorn back in after about a month or so, after I began Phase Two. I usually would have it once a week or so. On the South Beach website, it does list popcorn in Phase Two, under the 'Starches, Use Sparingly' category.

I always hear people say that the SBD is "less stringent" "less restrictive" etc than Atkins. Can someone elaborate on how?? From what I've seen/read on here and WC, it doesn't really seem much different.
(I'm very interested, since I am thinking of going back to Atkins and would really like to know exactly how this is different.)
Thanks!

Yes!! The biggest difference between the two is while Atkins allows no fruits and no carbs at all, SBD does allow them in moderate amounts. In phase two and three especially, you are encouraged to begin phasing some 'good' carbs back into your diet. The biggest difference, however, is definitely in the fat content of the two diets. In Atkins, you can eat stuff like bacon, full fat cheeses, oils, etc. In the South Beach diet, you focus on healthy, unsaturated fats and lean meats. I would say, as a veteran of both diets, that South Beach is undoubtedly the healthier of the two, and probably the one you are most likely to lose weight on and keep it off. It's just an easier diet to maintain for a lifetime, and much easier on your heart as well! :D

i have been doing SB for the last three weeks...i would eat great and then on the weekends i would crash due to many things goin on....4th of july, hurricane evacs etc. well anyway...this week i worked out everyday (so far) and have slowly been adding things back into by diet, but i weighed myself at the gym and i lost 4 lbs...not much compared to what you should loose int he 1st 2 weeks but considering my lifestyle lately i say its pretty good...now i have to keep it up! :p

I have a question for all you SBD followers...
In phase one, is there anything I can eat for breakfast besides eggs? I am having the hardest time with that. I don't really like eggs and I definitely don't have time to cook anything in the mornings. The other meals are fine but I keep screwing up breakfast just because I feel like there isn't anything I can eat.
What did you do for breakfast in phase one?
jimmysgirl424
07-14-2005, 12:41 PM
I am not going to be much help here, because all I pretty much ate were eggs. I know you can eat turkey bacon or other lean meats. Are you strictly a breakfast food person? If not, I would suggest just eating something else entirely, like some soup, or lowfat cottage cheese, etc. Also, I know that they are now selling South Beach Diet frozen meals at the grocery stores, so that may be an option for you as well.

I am not on SBD, but do try to eat more lean protein/good carbs. I don't do eggs either, but for breakfast I often have a vegetarian sausage patty and light cheese on a whole-grain english muffin. I suppose the muffin is out for phase 1 (but check it out for phase 2...something nuts like 8 grams of fiber), but you could do faux sausage/cheese on a plate. Or on a tomato, or with mushrooms....

Thank you! I picked up some veggie sausage and that'll probably help me make it through the first 2 weeks. Another question: what was your favorite snack in phase one? I usually love fruit and oatmeal as snacks, but those are both out for now.
Thanks!
sublime311
07-17-2005, 10:42 AM
Rosebud! Sorry, I'm late re: the breakfast question. I don't like eggs, so this is what I would generally have:
LF SF vanilla yogurt
Mixed with the yogurt: 2T of PB (phase 1) or Frozen no sugar added strawberries (phase 2)
2 strips of turkey bacon (phase 1) or SBD cereal bar (phase 2)
V8
On weekends we would sometimes have Soyrizo (soy chorizo) with eggs added to DH's portion, pinto beans and V8. On phase 2 we added whole wheat tortillas.
For snacks I would mostly stick to cucumbers, string cheese, and nuts (pistacios and almonds). I'm not a fan of deli meat, but that makes a good snack when rolled with some low-fat cheese. Oooo, another girl here, Wendy, turned me on to pepporoni and cream cheese! REALLY yummy. I actually use turkey pepporoni and fat-free cream cheese and it's still really tasty.
Good luck!
I keep saying I'm going to do SB but I've been lazy about looking it up...I'm just now printing up (from one of the websites, which I hope is accurate) the food lists.
Here's the crazy thing--I've been thinking that I lost 20 lbs. so far but you know what? I've almost been on the SB diet this whole time. It is very weird. It's like I knew somehow what the high glycemic foods are! I've even allowed myself dark chocolate which apparently you are allowed sparingly in Phase II.
How did that happen? Through trial and error, I figured out which foods make me fat (SUGAR!) and all of them turn out to be the ones the SBD says to avoid. But there are some they say to avoid I've been lax about. OK, anyway, I'm going to get more focused about it and be in Phase I (in a relaxed way because I'm breastfeeding once or twice a day)!
I had this bizarre backlash where I gained 5 lbs. back and the only thing I did different was exercise. That was the ONLY thing I did different. Now I'm just hoping if I pay attention to Phase I I will lose these 5 lbs.
I can't focus too much on diet. I've got too much stuff to do! But what's great about this way of eating is that I find it very intuitive. Phase I requires more memorization but Phase II I almost figured out on my own.
To be honest (since you can eat beans in Phase I, yay!) the only hard thing is giving up carrots. I love carrots.
OK, I haven't even really been in Phase I because I eat a ton of cereal (high fiber cereal)...and I've already lost 5 lbs! In a week!
OK, I don't want to lose weight too fast but that's kind of cool.

I did my own motified version of SBD. It was hard for me to follow their plan because I don't like many veggies....just basic salad items. The only cooked veggies I like are corn and carrots, and both were out. Whatever. :)
So I did my own version of it. Cut out most breads, pastas and junk for 2 weeks. I lost 4 pounds my first week. Not much more my second. I've always heard that the more weight you have to lose the more and faster it will come off in the begining, and that's true (as most is water weight from what I've read).
Don't worry about gaining a few pounds when you start working out. You are building muscle, and you will tone up. I gained a few pounds when I was really hitting the gym on a regular basis. But my inches were going down each time. I lost 4 inches from each upper arm and each thigh!!
Cardio is very important. Do small things to get you moving. Park your car further from the store. Walk up stairs instead of taking elevators. Buy a pedometer ($3 at Walmart) and track how many steps you are taking. You should start off with a half hour of cardio 3 times a week for the first two weeks...even if it's just walking around your living room. Keep adding 5 minutes to that every 2 weeks. You won't even feel it.
Set goals for yourself and reward yourself when you meet them. I wanted to lose either 5 pounds or 5 inches each month. When I got to my goal, I'd spoil myself with something I wanted but didn't want to buy (straight iron, bathing suit, massage, etc). Mine were big ticket items but worth it.
Don't worry if you slip and eat a few cookies. It's not a big deal. Trade off. 3 cookies = 10 minutes more of cardio. I'd make up for "slip up days" by doing one additional circuit at the gym the following day. Or justify it...I'll have a small ice cream at Dairy Queen but I have to walk there (a mile walk to and back).
I just started back at the gym. The wedding is over and so is the stress of losing weight, but I want to maintain myself and get into better shape. I'm not going gung-ho like I did for the past year, but I'm definately going to be making some changes. :)

Okay, now putting on my need-to-diet hat...I've done Atkins before and lost about 30 pounds in 3 or so months. I loved it and didn't really have any problems with it. Then vacations and the holidays hit. That was the end and it went downhil. from there. I keep telling myself I'm going to get started up again and do SBD. Now, I just need to put down the sugar and carbs and just DO IT!

I tried turkey bacon for the first time today and it's actually pretty good!
Also, I like cottage cheese. I too am getting sick of eggs. I've been trying to cook them differently, one day just scrambled, one scrambled with ham, a ham and cheese omelet. Anything to make it not seem like it's the same thing everyday.
Cottage cheese and some tomatoes might be a good, quick breakfast. :)

I'm just wrapping up Phase 1 - technically, Monday I should start Phase 2 but I'm going to start tomorrow instead, so I make sure I don't go crazy over the weekend (last weekend got a little out of hand!). I'll weigh tomorrow but I did lose 3lbs the first week, which I was very happy about. I've been going to the gym 4-5 times a week for the last three months and I'd been losing inches and body fat but not weight. So my doctor suggested I try the SBD for the weight loss and also to help lower my cholesterol - it's normal but I could improve my HDL and my triglycerides (whatever they are!).
As for breakfast, I can't help, I'm afraid - I've been chowing down two hard boiled eggs every day. I'm such a creature of habit! But I have to admit, I'm so ready to introduce oatmeal or high fiber cereal - Trader Joe's has a particularly tasty one that I love.

Mind if I join in too? My husband and I started the SBD 3 weeks ago. We're currently in the second week of Phase II, and both of us had lost about 6 pounds (we didn't want to lose too much weight on this, but just looked at it as a healthy-lifestyle jump-start). But of course, Saturday we told ourselves we could have a Cheat Night, and went totally overboard. So, today I'm going to revist Phase I to get back on track.
Glad to see there are other guys on this that got sick of eggs too! That was our main complaint. Neither one of us likes plain yogurt either, so we're relieved to be in phase II. Towards the end on phase I, I was experimenting with all kinds of ways to make eggs - egg white omeletes, veggie scrambles, frittatas, anything to make me feel like they were something different.

Today DH and I start Phase 2. I've lost 14 pounds. This is a great diet. :) How did all of you transition to Phase 2? I've heard just adding one good carb back a day, and eating it daily for a week, one meal a day is the way to go. I think we're going to start with whole wheat tortillas. We can make all sorts of wraps for dinner. :)

Count me in! Today is the start of the second week of Phase 1 for me!
The first week was not bad at all. I did cheat a little this weekend, but I was out all weekend with ILs and only had a couple of bites of not P1 foods (one bite of pasta, some corn). I've found SBD so much easier this time around (I tried it before last year). I lost 6 lbs last week. :) I'm even eating eggs for breakfast, which is unheard of for me.
My biggest problem is planning ahead and having the right stuff in the house. But DH is helping me out and stopping by the store when I need him to. Hopefully this week goes as well as the last! :D

My annual bloodwork came back while I was at the beach and I was shocked to see that my cholesterol, long hovering in the 180 rage, was at 204. So I decided to do SBD when I got home. Yesterday, Monday, was Day 1 of SBD. And yesterday evening, I got a call from my dad telling me he has blockage in his heart and is having bypass surgery tomorrow. So here we are, SBD Day 2. I have to lose weight. It’s just not healthy at all for me to be this big. So far, so good. I had a small piece of dark chocolate last night, but in all fairness I was quite upset about my dad. But today is better so far! I had sashimi and seaweed salad for lunch!

DH's cholesterol has been up to 300, but his last reading while on SBD was 191 (after less than 4 months on the diet). My mom is diabetic and also has seen a reduction is her readings while on the diet - her doc is even considering taking her off meds if she continues to have these #'s. IMHO, this diet really works - not just on weightloss, but also overall health.
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Be well.

Hi girls,
Had this for dessert last night, from SBD on phase1...it was great!
Chilled Espresso Custard
Serves 4
Ingredients
Complement your meal with coffee at its best—a simply lovely baked custard of rich-tasting espresso.
1 1/2 cups 1% milk
2 eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons sugar substitute
2 teaspoons espresso powder or instant decaffeinated coffee
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground cinnamon, for garnish
Lemon twists, for garnish
Instructions
In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar substitute, espresso powder or coffee, and vanilla extract until well-blended. Pour into four 6-ounce custard cups or ramekins and place in a 10" skillet.
Fill the skillet with water to 1/2" from the tops of the custard cups. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the cups from the skillet, cover with plastic wrap touching the surface of the pudding, and refrigerate for
3 hours, or until chilled. Garnish with the cinnamon and lemon twists.

Thanks!
I am not doing SBD, but I'm lurking for low-carb recipes to control gestational diabetes. The reason sugar-free pudding is not ok in Phase 1 is that it is made with milk, which has carbs. You might be able to find sugar-free pudding mix and make it with Hood's Carb Countdown milk. An 8 ounce serving of that milk has only 3 grams of carbs. I don't know how many carbs you're allowed during Phase 1.

a little disappointed :( i jumped off the bandwagon after 3 days (not by choice though) i have to take meds for some awful knee pain that i developed and the easiest thing to do was get a piece of toast to get those suckers down. so i've decided that i will keep the carbs down and until the prescription runs out will do the diet as best i can and modify it if need be.
i'm pretty bummed about it but i'm gonna make it work - my exercise is also being limited as well. limited movement until inflammation subsides:(

Kelli inspired me to start SBD back in May. I lost 10 pounds on Phase I. Then we were nearing the end of school and it seemed like everyday people were bringing special meals or cakes. Somethig tempting and they would say come on and celebrate the end of school. And guess what I abandoned ship and went crazy. Up until that point I did so well. I was only a few days from Phase II. Had never even thought about cheating. Lets just say I gained back those 10 pounds and then some.
I am now jumping back aboard. I really enjoyed SBD. My husband didnt follow the diet but he would eat the meals I made. WHich is a big step for him. He does not like many vegetables- bsically just corn. But SBD was by far the best diet I have been on. I am looking forward to starting again. My advice is to use the inks at the start of this thread. Especially the forums those people there know alot. The people here do too though. Witht hat I say Happy Dieting everyone! I hope to be a big loser myself.

shaqangel - why not take them with whole wheat bread? At least then it's healthier than white bread. Remember, sometimes we have to veer off a bit, but if we make the most healthy choice for us at that time, then we are not doing bad. :)
KRM - GL, I'm sure you'll do great again if you lost 10 pounds on SBD Phase 1.
Well ladies, I am very happy with the 19 pound loss that I have as of right now. Last night, I convinced DH to go for a walk. It was not as long as I would have liked, but it is a step in the right direction for him. :) Tonight I go to Curves.

Have I totally killed this journal.............
I confess that I have not really done SB though I have lost lots of weight...but I am going to start SB in January of next year....SO DON'T KILL THE THREAD! I need this thread...
The SB diet gave me the idea of not eating sugar which is how I lost this weight (26 lbs and going strong)--so really...keep it up! (I'm just waiting to go on the SB diet when I stop breastfeeding.) I'll support you. You can eat normally and still lose weight!
I'm trying to be a booster here but realize I'm sounding a bit ridiculous!
** bumping **
I am trying this for the second time... On phase one, day three, which is, I think, as far as I made it the first time around.
I'll confess that I hate it. I have literally had the shakes at least twice in the past three days. Going to try to stick it out and see if it passes...
Hi Yaya...
SORRY...that sucks. If you get the shakes I wonder if you could eat something that would give you more sustenance but is not high glycemic--like nuts or something? Just one thing if you think you aren't going to make it? Because I really think the SBD is not like Atkins or anything weird like that--it can be a more gentle process. Little off the wagon will not utterly demolish your efforts.
But I'm hoping you do NOT get the shakes this time! Good luck!

DH and I are starting SBD on Sunday. Hopefully we can stick with it. My problem will also be with the eggs-I can only eat my eggs by putting them on toast so obviously that will be a problem. I have the regular SBD book and the cook book so I'll try the different versions of the frittas.
My problem will be that we will have fruit and bread in the house b/c we have a 14 month old son who eats fruit and carbs so I have to resist tempation since I stay home with him.
It will also be hard giving up my coffee-I know I can have decaf but it's just not the same.
Congrats to all of you who have lost weight!!!!!
I can't wait to try that peanut butter dessert!
Oh my god, you have to give up coffee???? YIKES.
No, no, you don't have to give up coffee! Just limit it, I think, to one or two cups a day.
Jen1098
09-14-2005, 06:24 AM
You're right Yaya, I just double checked and to my relief I can still have coffee. I guess they say to have decaf b/c of the caffeine issue. I can't drink it black so I guess I'll have it with either 1% or soy. Gotta sweeten it up too so hopefully splenda will be okay.
Does anyone know anything about the new SBD frozen meals-I have coupons for some and I figure those would be good for dh to take to work some days. Do they have some for the different phases?

I started to ease myself into phase one today, and did okay. I actually did it last fall about this time but didn't stick with it. In some ways I think it will be harder this time around, since I know what to expect and it isn't as new. It makes me want to cheat a little more. I'll do my best though - I have about 10# to lose before the holidays roll around!
Good luck WisWis!!!! I went on ivillage and they told me that if you can't stand Phase 1, you can go straight to Phase 2 and still lose weight. you should probably try Phase 1 of course! But don't be put off by Phase 1 because Phase 2 is actually not that hard...(I say though I failed to abide by it today).

Dang! I can't understand why I am eating sugar lately. I think I had too much dark chocolate today...I ate it as I was falling asleep in a meeting...and then later tonight I ate 2 yo babies which are totally loaded with sugar (which is why babies love them so). They aren't incredibly high glycemic because they are also high in fat...It amounts to one sugar/high fat yogurt so it won't kill me...but it's weird! I didn't eat sugar for almost 5 months and it was easy and then once I fell off the wagon I couldn't get back on...I don't know why...

I did okay so far today, with the exception of a brownie this morning. A student made them for her French class and brought me one - I couldn't get out of eating it since she was sitting there talking to me! I feel bad, but I'd have felt bad if I didn't eat it too, just for a different reason. Ah well, I'll just keep going. and hopefully tomorrow will be temptation free.

Does anyone else eat the South Beach Chicken Wraps? They have Ceasar & Southwest. They are actually yummy! They come w/ a small serving of sugar free jello. I am obsessed w/ them and have at least 5 in my fridge at a time.

http://users3.ev1.net/~fontlady/recipes.html

Actually a couple of those don't seem to be SBD suitable (even though ok for Atkins Induction) due to saturated fat. For example the bacon in the Alice springs chicken. Of course, you could substitute turkey bacon. Or figure a little bit here and there isn't a big deal. Also, on SB you need to use low fat cheeses, replace the butter, etc.
Obviously we all make our own little concessions and adjustments here and there to figure out what is best on an individual basis. I just didn't want someone brand new to the diet to think they could follow these recipes exactly and still be strictly following SB.
I think it gets pretty tricky, b/c even though SB isn't a "low carb" diet in a strict sense, we tend to focus on that part and forget that the diet is also supposed to be very low in saturated fats.
ETA: But thank you so much for the link! There are definitely some good ideas there. I think I may actually try the Alice springs w/ tueky bacon and LF cheese! :)

I made the Spicy Chicken and Spinach Casserole tonight and it was AWESOME- not very pretty, but very tasty.
I subbed Low Fat Cream Cheese and non-fat sour cream to bring the fat content down. I also used fresh green chilies as that was what I had in the house and cut the cheddar cheese down to about 4oz. Definitely one to file to make again.

Hey everyone!
Today is Day 1 of Phase 1. I've been working with a personal trainer and she recommended this diet. So... I've begun my grocery list! I'm going to check out southbeachdiet.com because I'm a vegetarian and might need some extra help for recipes and stuff.
How are you all doing?
phoenics
01-04-2006, 11:54 AM
I did South Beach in the summer of 2004 and lost about 30 pounds... but I've gained about 6.5 of those back.
The weird (horrible) thing is, I've been on Phase I for 2 weeks now. Over Christmas! I weighed myself at home on my parent's scale and it looked like I dropped 6 pounds - but then when I got back home, it had added those pounds back on.
I know I'm weighing everyday and I shouldn't, but I feel so discouraged now.
It's like the plan isn't working right - I did have to take a ton of benadryl and some prednisone in the past five days to fight off an allergy attack, and maybe I am retaining a lot of water, but I'm really disappointed.
I think I will just stay in Phase I until Sunday and see what happens when I weigh myself then... hopefully then the true weight loss will show up.
I did measure myself and I think I lost an inch around my hips, but I'm not sure...
I hate the not knowing part.
I went to try on bras yesterday and it felt like my size was no longer my size!
I need to find a personal trainer. How do I do that? I want one who will help me stay on South Beach AND workout.
I'm going to check out southbeachdiet.com because I'm a vegetarian and might need some extra help for recipes and stuff.
I am a vegetarian also, so I was worried I would not be able to do SBD. I started to back a few months ago, but did not finish. So I am going to start again and DO IT this time, starting next week.
phoenics Don't discourage! I would stick with it, and try not to weigh yourself each day. For me, anyway, I could care less what my actual weight is. I just want to be a certain size. For instance, two years ago I was a size 2, but weighed 125. And two years before that I weighed about 115 and was a size 4-6. It really depends on muscle mass, etc. Keep your head up!! :)

We just started the SBD last Tues. So far, ok, had some fallbacks this weekend since we were away for the weekend, but nothing too major (I hope!). The last time we started this diet, I found out I was pregnant, so we never really got going on it! We had done it once before that though, so we sorta knew what we were in for. DH lost way more than I did, so that was sort of annoying.
Anyway, we have our first trip away from our DD planned for April--we are going to Vegas:D So we are trying to get in shape for that and for the summer. Ideally, I'd like to lose about 20 pounds.

Well, I'm on day 11 of Phase 1 and have to say, I've been doing really well. The only times I have "cheated" are when I honestly didn't know something wasn't allowed. I had sugar free pudding on Saturday night but didn't realize you can't have that until Phase 2. Oops! I also had non non-reduced fat feta cheese on a salad. Oops again!
I have definitely lost weight. I haven't weighed myself yet, but my clothes are much looser. I'm looking forward to weighing in a couple days! (and eating some grapes :o )

Food Reviews from SBD Cookbook:
Surprise South Beach Mashed Potatos p.154: Bleh. Not so much. This wasnt very good IMHO. We would rather just eat the steamed cauliflower instead.
Spice Rubbed Chicken Fingers (did not have the cilantro dipping sauce) p.212: Awesome! These were really very good, we dipped them in mustard but these would really be perfect on a salad~
Tonight I am going to try to make the espresso custard since someone on here said it was good~ :)

We just had the spiced rubbed chicken fingers last week as well, on salads. Yum! DH is making up some pistachio chicken now for some salads this week. He just made the avocado dressing that goes on top of it and we both took a taste-test, very good!
The cookbook is great, we use alot of recipes out of there.
DH has started Tivo'ing that Lo Carb and Lovin' It show on foodnetwork, I'm not sure what phase the recipes fall into though. Some of them look so good, but I'm guessing most are phase 3.
We didn't mind the mock mashed potatoes much, but it took a few times to get used to them. We found they they have to be thouroughly mashed (food processor) for us to even be half-tricked into liking them;)

Just wanted to drop off a recipe that I tried last night and will make it on our regular schedule. Easy and very good. I only had 4oz of cheese in the house, so 3oz went in the meat mixture, the other ounce went on top and it worked out fine.
MAKE ME STUFFED PEPPERS
2 large green peppers, halved lengthwise, 6 ounces each
1 pound ground beef
1/4 cup onion, chopped, 1 1/4 ounces
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 cup tomato, chopped, about 2 ounces
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded
2 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded, for topping
In a large pot, bring about half potful of water to boil. Add the peppers and boil for 3 minutes. Drain. In same pot, brown the hamburger, onion and garlic. Drain fat and stir in tomatoes and seasonings. Cook until tomatoes are hot; remove from heat and stir in the 4 ounces cheese. Put the pepper halves in a greased 8x8" baking pan and fill with meat mixture. Sprinkle the extra cheese on top, if using. Bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes.
Makes 4 servings
Can be frozen
I have a question about phase one. Are we allowed to eat store bought hummus? Just wondering since I am addicted to the stuff.
It is hard to do this being a vegetarian!!

I did a quick scan through and I didn't see anything about Dannon Lit n Fit yogurt (DING SHAMELESS PLUG) as a diabetic I am now a CAREFUL package reader.... did you know that every other brand of LIGHT yogurt has added corn syrup?!? Dannon is the only one that doesn't (that I have found) AND the fruit flavors have less carbs than say yoplait light b/c of that added little bit of High Fructose?
SO that said and only having 1 more gram of carbs than Plain NO FAT unsweetened yogurt I do eat it during phase one, but watch out for what kind you buy - I think the banana one and peach and few other 'high glycemic fruit' flavors have a bit more I tend to stick with raspberry/blackberry/vanilla/strawberry/blueberry/and a special treat of the white chocolate ras.

SBD Bean dip is really good! our 2 weeks on phase 1 was up friday (although I am staying on phase 1 for longer than that) and both DH and I lost 10lbs. Yay :) We also bought some SBD frozen dinners they were for phases 1,2,3. They were really good and had really good portions. I am so excited I can just throw those in the mic. when I have a busy day and am unable to cook. Also the bean dip from the cookbook is really good too.
lean cuisine has some low carb meals as well I really like the turkey with green beans.

I am starting South Beach tomorrow. I did it a couple years ago shortly after DH nd I got engaged but I haven't done it since. I have lost 12 lbs. on my own but I'm now on the plateau and it SUCKS! and I'm creeping back on the lbs. so I need to do this to get my body back in the groove. So starting tomorrow Phase 1! :)

Can I ask a personal question? How much weight do you guys need to lose? I'm planning on starting the SBD tomorrow and I have about 10-15 pounds to lose. Will I really lose them in two weeks? The book says you lose 8-12 in 2 weeks.

I did 7 pounds in 2 weeks
I immagine if you went very low fat and exercised a lot you could do it, but it might be rough

I haven't posted in this forum before, but DH and I have been following South Beach for about 6 weeks now and are doing very well with it.
nbbride06: I also started with about 10-15 lbs to lose, and I lost 4-5 lbs during Phase 1. DH lost 6lbs (he had only 10 to lose), but guys definitely have an easier time losing weight more quickly. We followed the diet very carefully and didn't have any cheats in the first 2 weeks. The only thing I probably could have improved upon was to exercise more, but I did feel more sluggish than usual being without carbs, so I limited my time at the gym and cut down on cardio. I think it would be a lot to expect to lose 8-12 lbs since you don't have that much to lose to begin with. Acc to the plan, Phase 2 is supposed to be the "weight loss" phase and the first 2 weeks is primarily for cutting cravings and getting your body accustomed to the changes in your diet. I definitely noticed my sugar cravings decreasing right away and I felt like my clothes were looser too, esp around the waist and belly.
I would totally recommed SBD, and even if you don't lose as much as you'd like right away, any loss is a success! Please let me know if you have any other questions or advice about the diet. I'd be happy to help! :D

I dont remember how much we lost in the first two weeks but we've (both DH and I) lost about 40lbs in about 3 months. I went down 3 pant sizes as well. I agree with the PP, who said since you dont have much to lose to begin with so that 8-12lbs in the first two weeks would be a lot to expect. Good Luck!

Bumping up the thread to see if anyone else is doing the SBD? I started on Sunday and so far I like it a lot. I am not going to weigh myself until Sunday, but my clothes are fitting looser and I no longer have carb cravings. I could totally see myself doing this for the rest of my life.
Has anyone tried the Mocha creme dessert in the SB book? I made it last night and it wasn't that bad! Any other recipes you want to share??

I am interested in starting. I just started reading the book yesterday. I am breastfeeding though so I will have to figure out what I am supposed to do with that. I didn't get a chance to read the whole thread yet.

Good luck to all starting the SBD or getting back to doing it. Do you all want to start posting our daily meals to keep ourselves in line with the diet? I have been keeping a daily journal for myself and it really has been helpful.
I messed up today. I think I'm going to try and keep track of everything I eat and maybe post when I can.
But posting what we eat is a good idea!

Today's day one of Phase One for me. This is my first time doing SBD. Here's what I'm planning to eat today. I could use some suggestions for other snacks, though. I don't eat either mushrooms or tomatoes. I'd love to have some yogurt as a snack, but I can't find any that's sugar free for some reason. What do you all have for snacks?
Breakfast: Eggs w/ veggies, Decaf Mint Tea
Snack: Peanut butter & celery
Lunch: Salad w/ chicken breast & vegetables, low sugar/low fat dressing
Snack: Low fat string cheese
Dinner: Turkey Burger (no bun, of course) and Asparagus
Snack: Sugar-free popsicle

Rosebud03 -Looks like a good first day on the SBD. Phase one really isn't all that hard. It just takes self control, IMO. For snacks, I like low fat string cheese, nuts, or my fav hummus with cut up red, orange or green bell peppers.
This was my lunch yesterday:
Breakfast: scrambled eggs with onions, green peppers, mushrooms and orange peppers. Cottage cheese on the side and V-8 juice
Snack: 10 peanuts
Lunch: Spinach salad with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, greenbeans, and some hot peppers. 2tbs of SBD balsamic dressing.
Snack: -Low Fat string cheese
Dinner -Catfish and identical salad as my lunch
Dessert -Sugar Free rasberry gello and 2 tbs of FF whipped topping
Oh, and to give some newbies (I'm a newbie too) some insentive, I just lost 7lbs on my first week of Phase one! You can do it!!
b-fast: hi fiber cereal, milk
lunch: almonds (problem that I was in a rush), S. Beach diet bar
dinner: lentil soup, spinach salad with crumbled blue cheese
Snack: some cut up apples and pears, etc.
CHEAT!!! 2 of these british biscuits...
I'm starting at Phase 2 although I think if things aren't working for me in a week I'm going to go back to a modified Phase 1.
Unfortunately, I'm on medication that makes you REALLY FAT but I have to take it.
Dinner was very good though.

Hello everyone! Good to see some fellow SBD-ers here! I started off last Wednesday with Phase II. I've done Phase I in the past and the headaches were just a bit too much for me. The weight hasn't been coming off as fast, but I don't have the headaches. Depending on how the rest of this week goes, I may muster up the courage to try Phase I again.
Many of you have expressed disdain for the incredible edible egg. :p I have a solution. Crepes!!! We'll have to double check and make sure they meet Phase I requirements, but crepes are awesome. Just yesterday I made a crepe with beef and mushroom filling. It was SO good.
Has anyone tried the spicy chicken tenders with cilantro dipping sauce? It's very yummy!!!

Today is a little harder than yesterday, for some reason... I'm definitely craving sweets. I've been good, though. Today's menu:
Breakfast: Eggs w/ veggies, Decaf Mint Tea
Snack: Low carb, low sugar yogurt
Lunch: Greek salad w/ chicken breast, lettuce & cucumbers, low sugar/low fat dressing (I resisted the feta cheese, since I don't think it's low fat)
Snack: Peanut butter & celery
Dinner: (unsure-- whatever fish looks good at the market when I pop by after work)
Snack: Sugar-free popsicle
Didn't do it right today except at dinner. I ate a sandwich for lunch with the bread that was on it. No breakfast. I have a hard time sometimes when I either eat the free food before me or eat nothing for 4 hours. (I know, I know, you need to plan in advance.)
Will do better tomorrow.

DH and I are getting ready to jump back into the SBD tomorrow. I've done it before, but I have a few pounds that I'd still like to lose. I'd be happy with 5-10 lbs, which doesn't seem like much but they just won't budge. We have several weddings coming up in the next few weeks, and vacation after that so I'd like to look a bit better for them! I'm glad to see that there are some other people in the early stages of SBD right now too.

I have been eating Blue Bunny Carb Freedom yogurt and it doesn't contain any corn syrup. At least the Blackberry Creme doesn't - I have it in my lunch today and just checked.

I wonder if I should just start the two weeks over since I was only on day 2 when I messed up. Or should I still just consider this day three?
Today's menu:

Today's the start of a new week for me, so I'm going to step on the 'ol scale when I got to the gym tonight. I don't have one at home because when I did, I got obsessive about weighing myself. Even if I haven't lost much, I feel good. That's what's most importatant!
Yesterday's food:
Breakfast: omelet with ground turkey, low-fat cheese, mushrooms
Lunch: SBD vegetable soup, side salad with red wine vinaigrette
Snack: sugar free fudgecicle
Dinner: broiled chicken breast, side salad, cottage cheese
Today's food:
Breakfast: kashi go lean crunch (that stuff is GOOD!) with skim milk
Lunch: chicken salad on a bed of lettuce...made with fat free miracle whip from local coffee shop
Snack: almonds, string cheese
Dinner: TBD
I ordered a bunch of groceries last night, but I didn't get to prepare my lunches and snacks yet due to having to run around all over the place for my boss last night. I'm still managing to do ok. Because I don't bring many snacks, I get super hungry during the day. Hopefully I can take care of that starting tomorrow. I also didn't get to go to the gym either. I'll just work extra hard tonight.

Oh yeah, forgot to ask one question.
TMI ALERT!!
I've found that my GI tract isn't liking this new diet....been having a lot of looser stools. Is anyone else experiencing this or have ideas on what might be causing that? Perhaps I'm not getting enough fiber, but with all the veggies I've been eating you wouldn't think that would be the case....

I'm definitely joining in. I've done SB in the past and it really worked but slowly and surely, I've gained the weight back.
I pulled out my summer pants that I was definitely fitting into last year and they are snug, and not just a little, so I guess it's SB for me, especially since I'm headed to the beach for Memorial day! It's great incentive.
My biggest problem is snacking at work during the day so I need to head to the grocery store and stock up some munchies.
And renew my gym membership:rolleyes:

Hmm not sure if I think it's all worth it yet. LOL I don't like running to the bathroom so much! I'm hoping that as I continue, my body will straighten itself out.
Pretty OK today.
B-fast: Half cheese sandwich with lots of veggies on it.
Lunch: Hi fiber cereal (Uncle Sam)
Snack: Almonds, probably too many and a little dark chocolate. Some peanut butter.
Dinner: Pea soup, spinach salad.

Oh, both days I went to the gym. Yesterday: 90 minutes hard yoga class.
Today: 45 minutes on elliptical.

Nice work out Miel That's definitely my weak point although I used to work out all time. I'm just having a hard time fitting it in (excuses!)
Last night's dinner was a chicken breast, sauteed mushrooms and broccoli.
Did 60 crunches, arm weights, and numerous leg lifts during commercials while laying on the floor watching LOST!!!
I need to call and see what it's going to cost to renew my lifetime Membership at Bally's that I let lapse this year.
Angelraven, how long have you been doing SB?
angelraven
05-04-2006, 07:33 AM
tealynn: This is my second week on SB. I've done it in the past, and phase I was always too hard on my system. It seemed to make my migrains worse, so this time I'm starting off doing a modified version. I allow myself whole grain breads, pastas, cereals, but limit it to one or two servings per day. I find that it has helped a lot.
tealynn
05-04-2006, 08:41 AM
AngelRaven, everyone's system is so different, it's great that you can modify it and still have it work for you. I find that when I move into the second phase, it just doesn't do much for me. So I try to stick w/ phase one until I can't stand it any more and then just try to be reasonable about what I eat.
Breakfast: 3 turkey sausage patties and 2 pieces of Mozz. cheese
Snack: cukes and hummus
I can't remember if hummus is phase I or not???
Astara

DH surprised me with the SBD quick an d easy cookbook last night. I absolutely love it! Even more than the 'SBD cookbook'. It has so many different recipes (and lots of tips) that I can't wait to try!
Bfast: Chocolate meal replacement bar
snack: about half of a reduced-fat string cheese
Lunch: romaine & baby spinache salad with cucumbers, cheese & SBD ranch
(For phase 2 you can also make your own croutons out of whole grain bread! I had no idea~)
snack: sugar free jello
Dinner: whole wheat penne pasta w/ sauce & SBD recipe turkey meatballs. No bread! the meatballs are also good for phase 1. Cant wait to try!
Dessert: Sugar free caramel pudding with 2 tbs whip cream.

I saw that cookbook at Target the other day and wondered how it was. I have the SBD Cookbook, but I would love 30 minutes meals. Kinda like Rachel Ray, whom I love! lol
I am so proud of my willpower lately. Normally, I would have cheated by now, but so far I've been doing better. Last night was hard! We went to Ruby Tuesday because I did not want to cook. So I had the salad bar and a bowl of white bean chicken chili (that stuff is GOOD). It was so tempting to eat the piece of garlic bread that came with the chili and to nibble on DH's fries, but I resisted both. :)

Yum, sugar-free caramel pudding! Astara, Where did you find it? They only have low-fat puddings at my grocery store not sugar free puddings. I did find a snack pack vanilla pudding w/ no sugar added. It is 60 calories and 6 carbs per serving and it tastes pretty good!
Lunch: low-carb soup, 2 more pieces of mozz cheese
Snack: mixed nuts and no sugar added vanilla pudding
Dinner: will be fajitas w/ lean beef
I guess I'll make a fajita salad while everyone else piles the refried beans, rice and corn onto their tortilla.

tealynn I get the Jello with all the other jello's near the cheese isle here at my grocery store. It's Jello brand sugar free pudding. That sucks that you dont have any!! :( I usually get vanilla & chocolate layered but it was time for something different. The caramel pudding is awesome it does have 13grams of carbs though. Maybe its big? lol
Ok oops..I cheated a little on accident! I forgot to check my spaghetti sauce to make sure it was low in sugar and it wasnt! AH 12 grams of sugar per serving. Ouch. Oh well, I will, in the future make sure to check~ The meatballs were really good, I only used there method for cooking it. The recipe was for swedish meatballs.. so that wasnt going to work with pasta. the meatballs were good though & are really moist.

Astara, cute new baby pic!;)
Please, please post your turkey meatball recipe! I usually make meatballs from ground chuck, which is pretty lean, and they always seem to be a little too dry. I blame it on the cut of meat but maybe it's just the cook.
Dinner was pretty good, and I was pretty good. We had fajitas and I left out the tortilla. Basically made a salad w/ grilled sirlion, salsa, onions, avocado and I sprinkled a *little* corn on top and just a small spoonful of refried beans.
Question for those following along, What's your favorite low carb breakfast? I get so freakin' tired of eggs, eggs, and more eggs. I need some new ideas!

tealynn Thank you!! ;O)
meatballs for spaghetti:
Put 1LB of ground turkey into a mixing bowl. Add A couple of nice sized pinches of Italian seasoning (I always grind it with my fingers because I cant stand chunks of seasoning), about 3 shakes of onion powder, 3 shakes of garlic powder, almost about 1/4 tsp of pepper, and about 1/8 tsp salt.
roll into about 1-inch balls, you should get about 24 meatballs.
Coat your pan with Olive Oil, Heat on Med. High. Brown meatballs for about 4 mins. Turn down heat to Med. Cook for 4 more minutes. With a slotted spoon, remove to a bowl lined with paper towl and dab the meat balls to get any excess oil off.
Turkey Swedish Meatballs:
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1LB ground turkey breast
1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
3/4 C. lower-sodium chicken broth
3 tbsp reduced-fat sour cream
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Mix together salt, allspice, and pepper in a medium mixing bowl. Add turykey and gently mix with hands to combine; shape into 24 (1-inch) balls.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over med-high heat. Add meat balls and cook until browned about 3 mins (3 wasnt enough for me so I did 4); lower heat to medium and cook 3 more mins, gently shaking pan. Using a slotted spoon, transfer meatballs to a plate.
Add broth to the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high, and simmer until liquid is reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Whisk in sour cream and cook 1 minute more. Add meatballs. Sprinkle with parsley and serve hot.
QOTD I'm in phase 2 so I like the sbd frozen bfast wraps, the cereal & also meal replacement bars (choc & cinnamon are my favorite for bfast).
for phase 1, I usually just had a piece of string cheese and 1 or 2 tblsp of peanut butter.
I found a Breakfast recipe for phase 1: Breakfast Turkey Stack.
Quick homemade turkey patties piled high with juicy tomatoes and bubbly melted cheese make an irresistible breakfast stack that offers a change from the usual eggs and toast. Pair with a salad for a great brunch or lunch. Patties can be individually wrapped and frozen for up to 1 month; just defrpst and simply reheat in the over or microwave.
1 ln ground turkey breast
4 tsp sugar-free pancake syrup
1/2 tsp dried sage
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 large beefstake tomato, cut into 4 slices
4 (1oz) slices reduced-fat cheddar cheese
Heat oven to broil.
Combine turkey, syrup, sage, cayenne, salt, pepper, and ginger in a mixing bowl and mix well. Divide into 4 (1/2-inch-thick) patties.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat; cook patties until well browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Remove from heat.
Lay tomato slices in a single layer in a baking dish; season with salt and pepper. Top each slice with 1 turkey patty and 1 cheese slice; broil until cheese is melted, about 2 minutes. Serve hot.
(makes 4 servings)

I'm modifying the diet and eating Kashi Go Lean for breakfast, but when I was on SBD last time, I ate some weird stuff for breakfast. lol Cottage cheese, two strips of turkey bacon, sauteed asparagus and low carb yogurt. I think Breakfast is the hardest part of Phase I because eggs do become tiresome very quickly, and when you try to eat other foods, it doesn't seem to be as filling.
************************************************** ********
I had a good day yesterday.
Breakfast: kashi go lean crunch with vanilla soy milk, cup of coffee with 2 tsp Splenda and a splash of half and half
Snack: hard boiled egg, string cheese
Lunch: vegetable soup, side salad with balsamic vinaigrette
Snack: 1/2 c. cottage cheese with celery
Dinner: Southwest Chicken Wrap (chicken, low-fat cheddar cheese, lettuce, salsa on a wheat tortilla), black beans
I also made it to the gym last night. Yippee! I did 45 minutes of cardio- 35 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minute warm up, then alternated between 5 minutes jogging and 3 minutes walking. Then I did 10 minutes on the stair stepper thing. Wow, that's good for the 'ol tush! My booty is sore today! After that, I did 100 crunches with the machine set to 70 pounds. Surprisingly, my abs are not sore, but they do want to stay held in tight.
ETA: Also weighed in last night. When I started two Wednesdays ago, I was at 137.0 (doesn't sound that bad, but I'm only 5' tall). Last Wednesday was 135.5, last night was 133.7.
So this week, I lost 1.8, last week was 2.5 for a total of 4.3. I admit, that's not as much as I'd hoped, but I am also stregnth training. I do feel like I may be starting to lose a tiny bit of jiggle in my arms, hips, and tummy.

Welcome MES, I honestly think that you'll find yourself enjoying the SBD (more or less!) In phase I, I found the easiest way to shop and navigate through the grocery store was to stay on the perimeter, veggies, cheeses, meats. Of course Phase II is great because they have nice little packaged meals for you which is really convenient!
Astara, thanks so much for the recipe for turkey meatballs and swedish meatballs, I know what I'll be making for Sunday dinner!:D And congratulations on the continued weight loss! That's awesome. The last time I did the SBD, I only lost 12lbs and DH lost like 25 (rat!) but I'm going to try to combine working out this time, so maybe it'll make a difference.
AngelRaven nice job on the lbs down! Sometimes it's just a matter of baby steps. And it sounds like you had a great workout. Combined with weight training you may not lose as much weight because you're building up the muscle but you'll feel the extra room in your clothes!
I found this recipe on the food network if anyone is interested in yummy peanut butter cookies. I haven't tried it but it sounds good.
Magical Peanut Butter Cookies
Recipe courtesy of Paula Deen
Ingredients
1 cup peanut butter, creamy or chunky
1 1/3 cups baking sugar REPLACEMENT (recommend Splenda)
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350. Grease large baking sheet
In a mixing bowl, combine peanut butter, 1 cup sugar replacement, egg and vanilla. Stir well with spoon. Roll the dough into balls the size of walnuts. Place balls on the prepared baking sheet. With a fork, dipped in sugar replacement (to prevent sticking) press a criss cross design on each cooking. Bake for 12 minutes, remove from oven, sprinkle the cookies with some of the remaining sugar replacement. Cool slightly before removing from pan.
Otherwise you'll burn your mouth as you shovel them in.

Dinner: not so good...brat, carrot salad, baked beans (we went to MIL's)
Saturday:
Breakfast: Ham and cheese omelet
Lunch: awesome salad with shredded chicken and homemade balsamic vinaigrette
Snack: sf jello, mixed nuts
Dinner: taco salad... seasoned ground beef, cheese, low-fat sour cream, salsa, guac, lettuce, tomato and black beans
Sunday:
Breakfast: cereal
Lunch: shredded chicken salad
Dinner: (went to MIL's again) bbq pulled pork (skipped bun), salad, rice :(
Dessert: 1/2 choc chip cookie :(
As you can see, I did cheat a few times. Man, do I feel quilty. It was so not worth it. I didn't even want to go to MIL's house because I knew she wouldn't make anything that was SBD friendly. When I do try to explain that I'm on a diet and try to stay home to eat and then go over and visit, she yells at me. Then, DH's grandma sits there and practically shoves cookies and crap down my throat, and if I try to say no everyone stares at me like I'm a leper. Oh no, someone told Grandma no. Such a travesty! And she will not shut up about it until you eat it. sigh.... I may have to see if DH will talk to his family about it. Otherwise I just can't go over there and eat with them anymore.
I did get some exercise in on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I walked the dog for 45 minutes. Sunday, I did 30 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of pilates.

Hey ladies! Let me just start by saying I was the WORST this weekend, actually Sunday.
Saturday Breakfast: egg and cheese omelette (boring!!)
Lunch: tuna salad no bread (yuck!)
Dinner: ahi tuna appetizer, mushroom strudel w/ goat cheese app, smoked salmon app, crab eggroll app.
Can you tell we went out to dinner with some friends and just about ordered one of everything??? Rich food and wine, so it wasn't a good day for me BUT, I'm starting fresh today.
Breakfast: Eggs
Lunch: chicken and broccoli
Not sure about dinner
Astara too funny about the buckwheat pancakes. I think it's got to be pretty hard to make buckwheat appetizing! BTW, didn't make the meatballs this Sunday as I wanted too. We ended up taking a drive in the country and then had an early dinner out. But they're definitely in the menu plans this week! BTW, thanks for stopping by my journal. It's kind of silly to invest so much time in it not to have anybody say hi when they stop by. I've kind of abandoned it but I'm planning on getting back to it!
AngelRaven your shredded chicken salad with homemade balsamic vinagrette sounds really good!
MES the dairy part is definitely a saving grace. I don't know where I'd be without the string cheese, cottage cheese or yogurt. I actually don't the the low carb Dannon Yogurt, it seems kind of gooey but I did find the Dannon Lit & Fit yogurt which is low calorie and sugar free. It has 70 calories and 8 carbs, I think? It's pretty yummy.
I'm definitely hitting the grocery store on the way home from work so I can stock up on the things that will keep me from cheating. I'll be in a bathing suit in about 3 weeks:eek: so that's my motivation for now.

I have a major goal of making it to the gym tonight. We shall see.

Last night I made the chicken pizza packets posted in the Low Carb Recipe thread. They are delish!!!
I didn't make it to the gym last night. :( I walked the dog for a half hour, though. I did do my 20 minutes pilates DVD this morning. I think I stretched too far or the wrong way because my back hurts! I must have pulled a muscle. :(
Today's food:
Breakfast: scrambled eggs with veggies and ham
Lunch: leftover chicken pizza packet
Snack: almonds, string cheese, sf pudding
Dinner: TBD
Now I'm not so sure I'll be able to make it to gym. My back is sore! In fact, I'd rather not be at work; I'd much rather be laying down. It hurts to sit. Yikes!
In other news, I'm really noticing a change in how my clothes are fitting! AND something that may not be related, but one can hope, my friend at work said my skin is looking awesome! Maybe the water commercials don't lie! :)

Hey all, just a quick drive by, work has been really busy and I've felt guilty about logging-on (even though I'm dying too!)
I'm feeling a little smaller in the belly (exactly where it's supposed to work first!) and that's pretty awesome considering I'm also PMSing which works in the opposite direction.
Is anyone getting tired of their snacks? I'm really sick of nuts, cheese, cottage cheese and cukecumbers. I guess I need to revisit my SBD book.
Hope everyone is doing okay ... it's almost Friday! Hopefully my diet can make it through this weekend. It sucks starting over every Monday.

omg its only breakfast and ive already been bad! :( It's that time of month for me so I am absolutely *STARVING!* I ate 2 meal replacement bars today instead of one! :( That is the first time I've done that. I was just SO hungry this morning. at least I cheated with something that was good for you, but I still feel really guilty. Oh well. I'll do better the rest of the day...
snacks try some sugar free jello, celery with peanut butter, yogurt.. what phase are you on again, tealynn?

It's been a while since I logged on. I'm in the middle of week three and so far I have lost 8lbs. I am loving SBD.
Snacks -pickles, sugar free jello, string cheese and green peppers and hummus are a few of my favs

HeyAstara I'm doing phase 1 for as long as I can stand it. This is the 2nd official week, with a bad weekend in between so I kind of started over on Monday. BTW, how are the breakfast replacement bars? Are they good or kind of icky like Powerbars?
Chylynn thanks for your snack ideas. I need to get creative with my snacks. That's awesome about the 8lbs!! Are your working out also?
Right now I'm craving salty things (love PMS) so pickles sound good, green peppers w/ hummus sounds good too and I love celery because it's crunchy so I'll have to get some. I need to cut up my veggies at night to bring with me in the morning. I'll try to do that tonight.

I walk about 3 miles a day with my daughter 5-6 days a week, but that is pretty much all I do except for the occaisional sit ups here and there. I find that if I take care of my fresh veggies on Sunday for the week and place them in tupperware then I eat them more vs having to wash and cut them when I am hungry. Good luck!!

I did not do well yesterday, and today does not look like it will be much better. I'm in IT and we had a disaster at work that we have had to recover from. I worked a 14 hour day yesterday and was back for more fun at 6:30 this morning.
I know I'm making excuses, but I'm tired and the tradeoff between getting up early to try to prepare a healthy, SBD-friendly lunch vs getting a little bit of sleep didn't quite seem worth it today.
I'll be back in full force tomorrow. :)

AngelRaven, don't beat yourself up about it. The most important thing is your mental health and if getting the extra sleep is going help you be a more stable person, I'm all for it!
I know for darn sure I don't want to deal with my IT people if they're grumpy!;)

I'm surprisingly not grumpy. Instead, I'm incredibly loopy, so even the dumbest jokes send me into hysterics. :p People 'round here are amazed at my capacity to still have a positive outlook and be nice even when I've only had a few hours where I'm not working. In fact, I was ok with the disaster because it's a huge opportunity for me to learn. Do you think that qualifies as optimism at its best or sheer insanity? LOL
I haven't done as bad today as I thought I might. I ate my normal cereal for breakfast and then for lunch I had a grilled chicken salad. The bad part of that was all the Ranch dressing I poured over it. :o

Good morning everyone!
I just wanted to post my first few days of eating here to get a "critique" of what I am eating to see if I am doing this correctly. Thanks in advance!
Monday
B - 2 eggs scrambled
S1 - 15 almonds
L - SBD frozen meal - pork with pecans (eta - this was small and not so great :( ), side salad with vinagrette, cup of plain yogurt
S2 - 1 light string cheese with a couple of super thin slices of deli turkey and a small dill pickle
D - grilled chicken with a steamed artichoke dipped in vinagrette, glass of skim milk
S3(or dessert) - pb cup dessert made with the SF Fudgesicle
I am thinking I probably need more veggies, but I will get there.

tealynn Hey! I didn't get any notices that there were posts on this board! The meal replacment bars are REALLY good. I like the cinnamon & chocolate & peanut butter ones the best. Yum! It's gotten to the point now where I crave them. They are recommended for phases 2-3 but, if you really want to prolong phase 1, My DH and I found that going on phase 1.5 works really well. You can take a couple of things from phase 2 (such as a bar) and incorporate them into phase 1 and it might help you hold out a little longer. sorry for the novel of a response!
..ok back to reading the board..

Blech. I am doing poorly. Last week just killed my entire schedule, and since I didn't get to go grocery shopping, I haven't been sticking to the plan all that well. I'm not mad though. Stuff happens. Besides, my clothes are still fitting better and I am really getting some definition in my calf muscles. They are rock hard! So the gym is really paying off. :)
I plan on hitting the diet hard starting tomorrow. I've got my grocery list ready for the store tonight. Since I've cut back on carbs for a while, I might see if I can ease down into phase I. I am wondering if it will be enough to keep my energy high enough for workouts. I typically make it in about 4 times a week, an hour and a half each time. Do you guys think phase I will be ok if I'm working out that much? I guess I really need to pick lots of good proteins to add in each meal.
