DH needs to take his car in for body work, but is nervous about it because he thinks the body shop is somehow mandated to report (to police or insurance or both) if it looks like the car's been in a collision. Well, it was in a collision, but only with the side of the garage. It's got a big ol' paint scape, and a dent. We'd rather just pay for it ourselves, and not have his insurance co find out, so that our premiums don't go up. Anybody know how this works?

I've never heard that before. I don't think they are required, but I could be wrong.

I'm no expert, but I sincerely doubt that the body shop is mandated to report body damage as a collision with another vehicle.

My Toyota Camry and I had a 'disagreement' with the side of the garage several years ago and had it fixed no problem, no insurance co. I just paid out of pocket. :)

I've been in two collissions, in both the other party's insurance company cut me a check and I went to to the body shop on my own. I prefer not to let the body shop know what the insurance company has given me, otherwise they will charge exactly that much! So to answer your question, don't worry about it, I can't see why they would care.

I have never heard of anything like that. I've had repair work done to my cars that was the result of collisions where insurance was not involved and I've never had a problem (I actually ran into the garage once too....)

I agree, plus sometimes insurance won't cover damages or your deductible hasn't been met. I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't call the isnurance company. My father pulled out of the driveway, didn't notice my sister had come home and parked at the far end, and he ran into her (only paint scraped, he didn't do anything to fix it).

No, the body shop isn't required to report anything (maybe if there was frame damage, or if it's totalled, or whatnot). My truck was hit from the side, ran into the back, and bumped into from the guy in front of me backing up, plus when some jerk ran across the road so I hit him. The only one on the Carfax report was the last one, as it totalled the vehicle and therefore, branded the title. The lady running into the back of me, she paid for the damage without involving her insurance, and the guy who backed into me didn't do any damage--neither were reported anywhere. The lady who hit me from the side did body damage, it went through her insurance, and it was reported no where. In all cases, the rates haven't gone up at all :)
