Will anyone be going to see this film? It looks really creepy to me, and since The Grudge had me up for days, I think I'll be skipping it (although part of me still wants to see it).
I just read the story the film is based on, and I feel horrible for what this girl (and her family) experienced and was put through. The story of course seems to have been "glammed up" by Hollywood, but hopefully they'll do a decent job of telling her story.
It looks good, but it looks like it will scare me too much so I probably won't see it.

Is it really based on a true story? I recently found out that Amityville Horror was totally fake, including the first film.
I'm way to chicken to watch that Emily show.

Um....NOOOOOOO!
We actually just saw a commercial for it, and it was the first I'd seen of it. I immediately turned to mark and said, "uh uh."
I can handle a LOT of scary movies...blood and gore are fine. Demons and ghosts freak me out sooo much. The Sixth Sense was about the only ghost movie that didn't keep me up for days (and I still thought it was really freaky at times).
So...NO!

Yes ssstephanie it is. The girl's name was actually Anneliese Michel and I found her story here (http://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_1253.html). It is a creepy story (and also sad, as I can only imagine how this affected her and her family), but of course Hollywood has embellished it.

I hear you on that one Mrs_pell. I can take the ghost stuff, but the more creepy (rather than bloody) a film is (especially when it comes to "real"/fake stories on the devil or demons), the more it stays with me.

I can handle the blood and gore movies fine, but when it comes to demon-type movies; forget it. I watched The Exorcist one time only and that was years ago. To this day, I still have nightmares about it. Of course, DH wants to see it. I'll make him wait till it hits DVD and then I can leave the room if it gets bad. Which I'm sure it will. Don't know...there is something about demonic voices especially that absolutely terrify the crap out of me. Like whenever Linda Blair/aka Reagan/aka The Devil talked in the Exorcist while she was possessed.

The previews are scaring the shit out of me, so there's *no* freaking way I could ever watch this movie.

We might go see it but it's more likely that we'll wait for it to go to DVD and get it through Netflix - It sounds vaguely similar to another exorcism that happened in St Louis and was made into a movie that starred Timothy Dalton (I think). Although from what I remember, that exorcism didn't result in the death of the one who was "possessed".

That's exactly how I am, too. Scary is fine. Creepy, on the otherhand, isn't. :)

Did you see them on T.V. or the Internet? Because the ones online are waaaay more creepy (I think) than what they're showing on T.V. They're more detailed and you can hear the voices that they supposedly recorded.

I'm not sure if all the details in the film were true but the overall story itself was real......we have family friends who lived on the same street as the family the movie is based on. Definitely freaky stuff happening there.

I am absolutely going to see this movie. I looooove scary movies. I can not wait until September 9th. I'm going to the latest possible showing, to increase the effect.
I am such a freak. :D

Oh really? That's interesting because a long time ago I saw an interview with the people that lived there (at that time) and they said that nothing was going on in the house. They said the "red room" was just an ordinary room with chipped red paint, and no other freaky stuff had happened. Snopes also disclaims it saying "The truth behind The Amityville Horror was finally revealed when Butch DeFeo's lawyer, William Weber, admitted that he, along with the Lutzes, "created this horror story over many bottles of wine." Although the Lutzes still claimed that it happened, so who knows. Did your family's friends ever see anything? I love hearing about this kind of stuff. :)

So wierd! Interesting about those interviews. I don't remember everything that our friends said but there were things like when they were all having dinner candlesticks flew from one side of the room to the other just about hitting someone except that they ducked and they'd hear voices/screaming/things being thrown around in other rooms when there wasn't anyone in those rooms, etc.
Normally I'd say that it's possible that people who lived on the same street may have made up stories since the movie came out as a "claim to fame" type of thing but our friends were like the most credible people ever so I never really questioned it. They were an older couple - both passed away now - the man had been a prestigious doctor. Really, really nice intelligent people......both were "intrigued" by the house but not fearful of it. Which leads me to wonder whether maybe the house was haunted but some things had been made up for the movie to make it seem worse than it really was? Hhhmm..... :)

Oh man, if I were in a house where candlesticks were being thrown around and screaming was heard, I'd be out of there in a flash...forget the intrigue! ;)
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking about the house too; that most of it was made up, but that it probably is haunted by something.

No doubt!!!! I admit that I have an interest in that stuff (and have experienced some things myself) but there is NO WAY I'd hang out long enough for a candlestick to come flying at me! :D

The St. Louis exorcism was the inspiration for "The Exorcist", Timothy Dalton starred in "The Possessed" (2000) as Father Willam Bowden, the priest who performed the St.Louis exorcisms.
I might rent it or wait till it's on cable, but I won't go out of my way to see it.

There is absolutely no way I would to to the movie theatre to see this, or even rent it and bring it into my house!
The fact that it is based on real events just makes it that much more frightening to me!

The previews freak me out so much, but for some reason I can't stop watching them. I HATE these type of movies, but I always want to see them. I am still frekaed out about "The Ring" and that wasn't even real..or was it ?! :o
Anything that is true or could be creeps me out to no end, but I still want to see it. DH wouldn't let me see "The Grudge" because I would scream when the previews came on, but now I have it on my bloackbuster list to rent!

My friends and I are all getting together to go and see it. We all love scary movies, esp. the old "classics": Exorcist, original texas chainsaw, omen...
mel7dog--don't bother with the grudge. you couldn't even "lose yourself" in the movie b/c most of it didn't make sense. For ex. the girl had to crawl around on her belly in the house, but she could transport herself around the town and had no problems running down the halls?

Just wondering who saw it, and what did you think? Was it as scary as it looks, or did it turn out to be lame?

Really? The Grudge scared the sh*t out of me and hung in my head for a few days after that.
Well, you only saw the girl crawling in a few scenes because I think she was reliving what happened to her there, but there were places even in the house where it was just that black mass.

We saw it yesterday at the matinee. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but for a matinee, eh,it was ok. It was more of a courtroom movie than an exorcism movie. The main part of the movie takes place in the courtroom and tells more of the story of the priest and the lawyer defending him than the exorcism itself. There were a lot of "flashbacks" to "Emily" and there were definitely some creepy, make-you-jump moments. But overall, it wasn't an exorcism movie in the same way that The Exorcist was. I really expected it to be more about "Emily". Also they did change a lot of the details of the actual story (more than just the location from Germany to America), including a lot of the medical details that I had read on another site. They also shortened the time frame considerably.
Like I said ... it was ok. Some scary parts (esp the first time the boyfriend finds her on the floor is very creepy). But other than that, I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars! :)

Interesting Karen, as I really expected Hollywood to play up the "possessed" theme of the film, like they do in the previews. But then again, I guess that's what sucks you into seeing it. ;) Thanks for the review. :)

DH and I saw it on Saturday night...at the drive-in. Talk about super-creepy. The movie itself, was just "okay," not as scary as I hoped it would be. But, the drive-in factor definately added to the "scary" factor, for me.

I saw it last night. I thought it was rpetty good. I got creeped out a couple of times, expecially during the exorcism, and during some of the possession scenes. I liked it overall, but i hate when endings suck and this one totally did. I would recommend renting it. The only reason we went to the theater is b/c I get the movie tickets for free all the time.

I kind of want to see this movie, but it kind of freaks me out. Our neighbor's brother was exorcised when I was a kid, and while I never learned the details, I've learned enough to be completely scared.
So they focused more on the trial than the exorcism? Maybe I could handle it then. I've seen The Exorcist, but this movie looked like it could be scarier.

Oh, I hate that too! What a bummer. Hmmm, now that I know it focuses more on the trial than "Emily", I might see it, but not in the theater.

DH and I saw it this past weekend and liked it. Though much of the story line is focused on the trial, there are a lot of scary flashbacks. DH was the one who dragged me to go see it. Normally I wouldn't touch this kind of movie with a 10 foot pole, as I am pretty religious and believe in this sort of thing. That makes it scarier for me. Anyway, he was cracking me up because he kept closing his eyes. Big baby! :)
For some reason, I was saddened by the way things ended up. Not necessarily the verdict, but about what happened to her. For me, it was a very powerful story. I thought there were plenty enough flashbacks to not turn into too much of a courtroom drama movie.

I saw this movie last night, because I usually LOVE scary movies...although I don't know why, they keep me up for days...
But, like angelraven said, I too am religious, and believe in this stuff, so it made it even WAY more scary!!
I thought it was a really good movie though, and the girl that played Emily was a really good actress...although there is no way I would play that role...I'd be so freaked out!!
Let's just say, I didn't sleep too well last night...I kept waking up and checking the clock to see if it was 3AM!!
I'm not allowing myself to watch scary movies again!! :)

This might be a spoiler if you answer but I know I won't see the movie. But does something happen in the movie at 3AM? I'm just curious.

I saw this movie a couple of days before it was released, and I was a bit disappointed with it. Not as scary as I thought it would be. Like everyone said, about 2/3's of the movie takes place in the courtroom. Nowhere NEAR as scary as the Exorcist.
And to answer Claribella's question
This MIGHT be a spoiler to some, so I'll change the colour of the text. Highlight it if you want to read it:
3 a.m. is believed to be the devil's hour, according to Catholics. It is the opposite of 3 p.m., which some believe to be the holiest hour, because that is the time Jesus died.
So in the movie, Emelie Rose would have the "possession" experiences at 3 a.m. at first, then as the movie goes on, they would happen at any time.
