I also went to the mall this weekend and bought a pair of Express "Super Skinny" jeans--I saw them in VOGUE on Alek Wek and thought they looked hot. Ooh, I'm so excited. I tried this exact dress on in BR a few months ago (it's a petite which they don't sell in stores, but they had it as a catalog return) and it actually fit perfectly, but it was still full price, $148. Since I didn't have a place to wear it, I couldn't justify it. I don't think it ever went on sale as I checked online periodically. I found it on ebay NWOT and I got it for $29! I can't believe I won it for so cheap.

The Coach coupon is a customer appreciation thing they have been doing ~2 times a year for the last couple of years; it can only be used for a few days during their promotion - usually one in spring and one in fall, I think. I'm not sure if you just have to be on their mailing list or if you have to be on a 'special' list to get them, but it probably wouldn't hurt asking at a store.

Last week I did a little shopping at Banana Republic and found the most beautiful strapless, black and white floral silk chiffon dress ON SALE so of course I had to snap it up! how do you know those clothes will fit you? do you generally get your clothes tailored?

with certain designers, like malandrino, i know they'll fit because i have other tops/dresses by them in the same size. i look at the measurements to double-check, but i don't pay real close attention to them.

for vintage and random designers, i pay REAL close attention to the measurements and often email for more measurements. i might be a modern-day 4 in a dress, but a vintage-size 10. so i'll pull clothes out of my closet and check the measurements on those, to anticipate how an item will fit me. if i think it's a close fit in the hips or the bust will be too big, and it's not a *great* item - i let it pass. for certain vintage designer pieces, i'm willing to take a risk and have them altered.

i still have a few misses here and there, and in those situations i can usually re-sell the item for the same amount (if not more). i find that happens more with shoes than clothes. although i rarely buy pants on ebay because i think that would be a trickier fit!

RE: Fit. Many of my vintage eBay purchases require altering. Contrary to what you read about how vintage clothes are cut so much smaller--I find that most vintage dresses I like are way too big on me. I also like to buy vintage dresses and chop them off to make blouses, etc. I just gather everything up and go to a cheap tailor once a season or so (I'm due to go right now, actually).

I think it's very well-made. I don't own a lot of it (yet -hehe) but I just think it's so classy and is "grown up" and sophisticated while still being fun and flirty. I too have been looking for a white skirt with black print. I saw this one and couldn't resist snatching it up. I don't usually like to pay full price and certanly not $60 on a skirt but I couldn't help myself. I think I'll get a lot of use out of it. It's a pretty dressy skirt for me so I'll wear it more for dressing up than to work so I feel like I can justify the price. :D

Oh, gosh, thank you. I do get a lot of stuff from eBay...I don't really have any particular favorite sellers. It's a little difficult to explain my methodology on eBay, too. I see something in a magazine or in a store that catches my eye (like, for example, a one-shouldered dress) and I use that as a keyword to see what pops up. Or, I know I like a particular brand (Michael Kors shoes, for example) and I do a search for that brand. Sometimes I see a listing and it looks really cool, so I click on the seller's list of items to see what else they have (I found the cashmere dolman sweater that way). It's different all the time, depending on what I have on my mind that day.

I spend a LOT of free time on eBay and I've honed it to a science, so really the only thing I can say is--practice makes perfect! :D

The dresses vary. I usually get them for anywhere from $5-$20. Usually about an average of $12. I don't pay much more than 20 dollars for vintage unless it's truly mindblowing. I believe the dress I just posted was won for $20.50.

Dries Van Noten usually goes in the hundreds of dollars, even on ebay. The top pictured was won for $52.

ETA: BTW, my husband sells antiques on ebay and I generally filch from his Paypal earnings :).

Quick tip: You can get "new without box" Banana Republic shoes on eBay for really cheap. Every pair I've gotten has ranged from $14-$20 and they've all come in new, flawless condition (except for one pair, which was accidentally listed as new and had mild in-store use--the seller offered to refund me, but they were so cheap and looked overall fine, so I kept them). I love that I can get 5 pairs of shoes for the price of one pair!

ETA yes, that model does have frightening hair. My husband has been having no end of fun making goofs on her.

it depends where you are going clubbing. imo, that outfit probably wouldn't work in nyc bc women tend to wear tighter, darker clothes for clubbing here. perhaps, in a sunnier, warmer locale that outfit works for clubbing. some clubs are very hard to get into here, and back in my clubbing days, i had no problem getting into clubs, and i always stuck to the dark and form fitting rule.

Asha & Wendalah, we will be in Virginia Beach for vacation. All I see is jean skirts and tank tops around here:rolleyes: so I thought a prettier dress to go clubbing at the boardwalk would be better. MrsD ~ Those will be fine at Va Beach. If you are planning to go clubbing down there, be prepared for a lot of skank wear in the clubs and lots of tourists. If you want to venture outside of Va Beach for clubs (which I highly advise) go to downtown Norfolk, instead. It is about 25 minute drive from the Oceanfront.
