I am kindof in a career/job funk and wanted to post my resume on a job site to see what happens. I know I'll get a lot of recruiter calls for Schmoigan, Idaho but I kinda want to tease fate a bit. I wanted to know which sites were better to post your resume on if any of them are better than the other. I am looking for a more general site like Monster.com or something.

Depends on your area. I use careerbuilder.com because I know that is what the newspaper in our area uses. I personally don't like Monster because there aren't very many employers in our that use it.
Hope that helps.

I've personally use Monster (how I got my current job), careerbuilder and hotjobs (I believe this is powered by yahoo?)
I got my current job from careerbuilder and my husband got his current job through monster. If you want to make sure you get a lot of hits, you can pay a minimal price for an upgrade (my DH estimates he received triple the interest in the week he did this).
I've actually had more luck with the local-market versions of Craigslist (www.craigslist.com) than the Job Sites (Mosnter, CareerBuilder, HotJobs). Thanks to Craigslist, I've been on 5 face-to-face interviews and I've participated in another 3-4 phone interviews. I know recruiters are definitely seeing results by posting on Craigslist.
For the field and market I'm in (marketing-interactive communications in New England), the listings have been very robust and provide a lot of great detail, including job descriptions and salary ranges.
Good luck with your search.

My company looks at resumes posted on Monster, but we also use recruiters-and they go through Hot Jobs (yahoo, I think), Careerbuilder, and another one- for some reason the name is escaping me. I would consider posting your resume on all of them- I don't think it would necessarily hurt.

But, can your current employer find you on these sites?

I wouldn't really worry about this because every great employer should know its employees are always looking for greater opportunities.

Yeah, but I don't want to get dumped before I have a new job. The CEO of our company doesn't like it when people leave...at all.

If that's your situation JennH, I would consider just sending your resume to a recruiter.
If the company you work for recruites using any of this resume/job posting websites, then the chances of them finding your resume are very very high.

I have it with two recruiters, but might have to give to more. I did just post it on HotJobs, since you can block company names. I'm too nervous to post on the others, as much as it might help me, I don't want it to kick me in the butt, too.
I believe you can block out your names on both CareerBuilder and Monster. While I've been contacted from time to time by recruiters who search the career sites, I've had better luck replying to jobs that I've seen posted.
You might want to consider some of the networking sites too - like LinkedIn. You can go into LinkedIn and create a profile and then invite people to join your network. LinkedIn also has job postings; some of the postings are only to LinkedIn.
Good luck!
