HB - I can't believe the difference that color makes on the table and chairs. They look much better! I know! When we got them I was so sad because I wanted a new set but we couldn't afford anything large/grand enough to fill up the space and aside from the color/wear, it really was perfect. The black paint made it 1000 times better.

MRS.TIM, I wish my bathroom was that big
sheartm7 thank you!
KRM&TPS Y'all have done wonders for that house, it shows in your pics. Question about the kitchen....I moticed the microwave wasn't above your range in the before pics. Did you have to make that cabinet above it smaller? And get a new door for it to match the rest? Actually, it looks like maybe you could have just made the old doors smaller to fit in the new space? I ask b/c we are thinking of putting our microwave there in our upcoming remodel and will have to figure something out w/ the cabinet door. Our doors have a ridge in it now, so that would mess it up if we cut the door.

Thank you. The house before was very blah to say the least. Yeah we had to make the cabinet smaller. We just cut the doors. It easy having up there. I would have taken away much needed space if we did not put it up there. When we moved in there was no vent above the stove. So we just decided to get a combo like that. Yeah with the ridges it might make it hard. Maybe you could find cabinet doors somehow.

southerner--Amazing job on the bedroom! Can't figure why those windows were covered up, weird!
KRS - I LOVE that staircase, it's such a great focal point.
mrstim--I love that color! We were thinking of painting our dining room in a similar shade.
OK, here's my before and after - we turned our breezeway into a bar/rec room. It was DISGUSTING when we moved in--previous owner let his dog pee everywhere. So, got new carpet obviously...

Initially we were going to strip the paint and go with the natual pine paneling. However, stripping paint from GROOVED paneling is at best, insanity. So we went with a dark green Benjamin Moore paint to get an 'Irish pub' feel for the room.

Thank you everybody for the comments on the staircase. We went on vacation and the guy who was doing the addition did not like the way regular stairs looked in the house. You know where make like an L so he made the construction guys tear it down and make it spiral like that. And with the metal - the guy who made usually only makes gates and mailboxes. So this was his first stair rails. I think he did a great job.

What did you have to do to prepare the walls AFTER the wallpaper came off in the bedroom? We've had good luck with wallpaper coming off easily and no damage to the walls except for one room.

graciebella I'm jealous that you had better luck than us with wallpaper, I hope I never see this shit again :) Anyway, we decided to go with a faux painting technique since the walls were in such awful shape. There were three (maybe a fourth, we lost count) layers and it took us two full days to get it all off!!
Here's the windows up close:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5dc01b3127cce903469e47b1a00000035108YbtWzlu34
We insulated them and put the trim up.
Here's a close up of the wall. Fauz painting diguised all the imperfections pretty well, if I must say so myself.

Kimberland30, thanks for the compliment. We used Longjohn Red by RL for the top (obviously since the name of the paint is red!) and Navajo White by Behr for the bottom. And the trim is just plain white. RL has tons of colors in the burgandy family to choose from. They are it the "Thoroughbred" collection of paints. To be honest, we have painted several rooms in our old TH and a few in this house and both DH and I agree that RL paint is the best. It goes on easy and the look when all is said and done is fabulous. Very even. Hope this helps. Can't wait to see your final results.

Reebs, I love your dining room too! It's the flip flop of one of our bedrooms- I'm glad to see that lighter colors can work on the bottom (I thought it would make a room look top heavy, but your picture convinces me that was crazy talk.)
So hmm... here's what we are embarking on now. This bathroom has turquoise wall tiles and army green floor tiles. Wait, it gets worse. The floor tiles were put in with *turquoise* grout. I kid you not. So, no after pic yet. I'll edit in a while and add one!

Hey Islandbride- I love your kitchen pic's! Wow!
The blue is, I believe, Chesapeake Blue. Let me go check...
Yup, Chesapeake Blue by Behr. It's a few years since we painted, though, so here's the color code.
Lamp Black 1, 24, 0
Thalo Blue 4, 22, 0
White 3, 18, 0
Magenta 0, 44, 0
(Those are the numbers the Home Depot computer generated for the sticker on the top of the paint can.) :)

Reebs, thanks so much for the info!
This weekend I hope to paint our master and guest bedrooms (HOPE being the key word). :) Our living room is down the list a ways, but I'm filing everything I come across so I don't forget.
Somehow redecorating/remodeling is becoming as involved as our wedding planning was!

ignutzz - your tranformation is uncanny. I love that you guys put in a mantle. I've been thinking about doing something similar in our loft.
MeTheGirlie - Great job on the floors! It makes the room look so much warmer. One thing I noticed right away though is that you have all the furniture pushed out to the perimeter of the room, and thought it might look fabulous if you moved the tv cart to the right, top corner of the picture and the couch to the back third of the room, facing the window. This way the couch's positioning could make use of the fireplace. (Feel free to ignore me also - HGTV is warping my mind and has me obsessed with room layout.)
MeTheGirlie
07-09-2005, 08:54 AM
justHB I agree, I'm actually going to get rid of that cart altogether...notice, I still have the paper blinds up in this room and I've been here 3 years, so it's like..um.. a constant struggle to figure out what I want to do. This house is really small with an open floor plan so it's difficult to place - I actually have an opening there, so I really can't obstruct the flow...
I'll do a search in my pics and see if I can find some good ones to give you an idea of what I've got workin' - I'm ALWAYS open to suggestions!

We just had a shelf in there and it collected a lot of junk. We wanted to put up cabinets but didn't want to pay the money. So in our kitchen there was a cabinet that wasn't really functional cause you couldn't reach into real well from the sides. So...

cpaccione - what a clever idea to use a kitchen cabinet in your laundry room. if we ever remodel our kitchen and get new kitchen cabinets, i'll be sure to transfer to some in our "laundry room" aka garage. right now we use every last cabinet in the kitchen bc we have a smaller sized kitchen.

These all look great! Question for JULIEMAG - I really like the open shelves in the wall between your kitchen and dining room - great way to display stuff.
Is that a cabinet you put in under a new countertop, built into the wall - or what?
We are thinking about breaking down 1/2 a wall between our kitchen and living/dining and putting in a breakfast bar (but no cabinets yet - probably not for a few years b/c the rest of our cabinets are white laminate which we have no need to match) - so I'm wondering if I could do the same types of shelves in our DR and how it would look.
Thanks for any and all info - and congrats to all on the great work - I hope we can get some nice stuff done at our house!
juliemag
07-11-2005, 12:19 PM
RobynScott - The cabinet was there when we moved in. But it is just a double sided cabinet - and it's not installed in the wall or anything. On the display side, there is room for cups/plates/whatever, and then on the other side is a small cabinet with solid doors. It has regular counter top on it. It acts more as an island b/c it's not attached to any other countertops - KWIM? I'm sure you could do the same thing, just make the countertop hang over enough so that barstools could be pulled up. Our countertop only has a 5 inch overhang, so it's not quite enough for someone to sit at.
RobynScott
07-11-2005, 01:28 PM
Thanks Julie - I think we'll eventually put cabinets in so I'll keep it in mind for then - for now, it's going to be a straight breakfast bar. I'm wondering if I should try and put some type of display cabinet on the side facing out only?
we probably won't - but it's a rough thought.
Thanks!

We are thinking about breaking down 1/2 a wall between our kitchen and living/dining and putting in a breakfast bar Would you care for a little unsolicited advice from an architect turned interior designer?
I don't know how big your kitchen is, but if it is relatively large, there are many other things you can do to bring the two rooms together that will give you a more flexible plan, and won't give you stool seating (breakfast bar) right next to table seating (dining room.)
I have a client who is taking down the wall between her kitchen and dining room, and turning her dining room into a family room. She wants her family room to transition to her kitchen - much like many of the new homes being built today. (hers is from the 80s.) She figured the island would be built where the wall is coming down, but I designed a plan showing her new island IN her kitchen instead of replacing the wall, and it works SO much better for flow and flexibility. The new island will be perpendicular to where the wall is coming down instead of parallel.
Her family room will have a small table (maybe 36") and chairs near the new beam that is replaceing the wall, and then family room soft seating facing away from the kitchen. She has a lot more space in her family room without the island, and a better work triangle in the kitchen with it in there.
Even if you are not changing your dining room into a different use, there are ways to utilize the space gained by a removing wall that are more flexible and more functional than letting a breakfast bar take the place of the former wall.
Just my 2cents! ;).

I'm still "decorating" which is the fun part.
Now...on to the outside of the house.

But, thank you for the compliments nylons7. VERY sweet of you to say. We are pretty happy with the results thus far.

I would be too! :) Maybe this could be a new career for you! I really think you did a marvelous job.
If you don't mind my asking - What part of the country do you live in? DH is in the military and maybe on our next transfer, we'll end up close by and you can advise me on my new place! heh heh :)

SUZUBEANE (and others)
Would you care for a little unsolicited advice from an architect turned interior designer?
Would love some! We don't really know what we are doing - I could use a ton of help from an architecht turned interior designer - is this the right place or should I start a new thread?
Maybe other people can give me some ideas what to do with the space(s) as well - would be greatly appreciated! :)

wow - that classroom has some real bling. good job painting!! that blue is very samiliar to the blue they have in some classrooms here. in ny our classes don't look that great. your class is huge. you have an oven!!! i'm jealous. when i cooked i would have to stick to uncooked recipes. you are a real go getter for painting. the most i had ever painted was the cabinets.

We got double 8' doors put in instead of the single w/sidelight and transom. Not only was the original door set brass-accented, but it was apparently put in by a monkey and stained by one, as well ;). We have since ripped out the piddly baseboards and are in the process of replacing them with 5" ones.

We still have to repaint the trim to match the new stucco work on the front patio. We added a circle drive and completely landscaped, pulled out a few dead trees, added a tree, and sodded.
Backyard to be continued...
Tanya
07-15-2005, 11:19 AM
The backyard was a whole different story. We had to add 150 dumptruck loads of dirt to raise it and make it even, pulled out a ton a small, yucky and sometimes dead trees/banana plants/etc., and hired day laborers to work for a few weeks just to rid all the trees of poison ivy, vines and various other yucky stuff. Then we sodded the first 30 feet from the house and hydromulched the rest. Unfortunately we had to do this in the winter so they used Rye grass, and now we need to reseed since it's mostly died off.
Here's the Before:

The fountain is connected to the french drain we added down the side of the house to help with the flooding issue, and it could be really cool if we added a bunch of rocks and made it a big feature. Right now it looks kinda sad :o.

Same thing applies to my kitchen! :D Sophia, the kitchen looks great already, but I love your idea of granite countertops. We REALLY want to remodel our kitchen, but with a little one on the way, we're putting it off for a bit. But now I'm having kitchen envy after reading this thread...lol.

Nothing major here--but we had TWO eating areas in the kitchen--as well as a formal dining room. Since it's just me and DH right now, we don't need ALL that eating area. So I transformed the smaller dining nook into my 'baking center".

Here's mine! I re-did the huge (300 square foot) room in the basement. I made it into my library.
This is kind of what it looked like before (this is actually what is now my "craft room", before I painted it, but the Library was the same):

The tile floors were cracking and coming up:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4cc01b3127cce9ded93d1c81b00000016108MYsmblizI
So I removed ALL of the tile which I DO NOT recommend! It was a pain in the you-know-what!!!
I painted all of the paneling. Then I put down "peel and stick" carpet squares:

apoppy~Thanks! It was a lot of work, but worth it. My Dad was a big help (he is a contractor/builder), but we did all the labor ourselves, he just "managed" the job.
Pink-Converse ~Countertops are just Formica. We don't plan on staying in out house for too long (maybe another 3 years or so) and we didn't want to spend the money on granite.
We actually covered the countertop that was already there with the Formica laminate.
The cabinets are painted Dove White by Benjamin Moore.
We painted them ourselves. They really came out awesome.
We sanded them down and then did 2 coats primer and 3 coats paint, with a light sand between coats to smooth out bumps and minimize brush strokes.

I spent the last week refinishing my hardwood floors (We only have carpet in the bedrooms, so thuis was a HUGE task.) We bought the house in December 2004, and the floors were looking rather dull, and the stain was worn off in some spots - we presume due to the previous owner's 2 large dogs. We decided not to professionally refinish the floors (sand, stain, seal) because we intend to live here for at least 10 years, and didn't want to find they needed to be done again when getting ready to sell. However, I desperately wanted to find a way to protect the floors and improve their look.
It's not perfect (i.e., it didn't "fix" the worn spots), but I'm very happy given it only cost me about $75 to do all of the floors. I used Orange Glow Hardwood Floor Refinisher. It's a clear, water-based urethane and really shines up dull hardwood floors. In fact, now that the floors are so shiney and pretty, you hardly notice the spots where the stain has been worn off . Plus, now those spots have a protective coating to prevent damage to the wood. And when we do get around to having the floors professional refinished, we know how to keep them protected and shiney for years to come.
Here's a "before and after" picture of the family room floor. To accomodate the furniture, I had to do half one day and half the next. Before FamRm Day 2, I took a picture to show the difference this stuff makes.

And here's a picture of the completed floor - Well, about half of it. There was furniture in the way behind me. :)

KaliLily- Your floors look amazing! I am looking for something similiar. Our floors are pretty worn and not shiny at all :( Can you tell me what the process was like? Thanks!
Sure! I bought the refinishing "kit" at Bed, Bath and Beyond ($49.99 I believe), which came with Orange Glow's mop handle & base, one cleaning pad, one refinishing pad, their hardwood floor cleaner, and the refinisher solution. (The refinisher solution in the kit covers about 500 sq. feet of flooring, so I bought 2 extra bottles, as well as an extra cleaning pad, refinishing pad, and bottle of cleaner.)
First, you sweep and/or vaccum the floors. I used my swiffer and then went around the trim with a Dust Buster vaccuming up anything stuck along the edges.
Second, you mop the floors with their floor cleaner and cleaning pad. They recommend mopping the floors twice, though I only did it once. (I swiffered twice though!) They also advise that you limit airflow to avoid dirt/debris from getting on the floors during the application & drying of the refinish. I just kept my windows closed and shut off the A/C at the thermostat. You then allow the floors to dry before applying the refinisher.
Finally, it's time to apply the refinisher. You squirt the refinisher on a small section of the floor, spread it around with the mop (using the refinisher pad), then you smooth it out going with the grain of the wood. You continue to do this in small sections (no bigger than 4' x 6', I believe) until the room is done. Then you allow it to dry for 1 hour. After 2 hours you can apply a second coat, but I only did a second coat on the stairs since they have a lot of worn spots I wanted to protect. Although it's dry in 1 hour, you have to wait 24 hours before replacing rugs and furniture.
You can apply this refinish up to 4 times a year.
It's hard work, especially in the summer with the A/C off  , but it is also easy and pretty quick. If you decide to do it, and need help, feel free to PM me.
FYI - Next time I do this, I'm going to take some wood stain I have that matches the color of my floors and apply it to the worn spots before starting the refinishing process.
kim - does that floor refinisher get rid of surface scratches meaning not very deep scratches?

LOL, and there was a SpongeBob toilet seat, and SpongeBob decor stuck on the walls too, with that tacky putty-like stuff. Fun. :) (Obviously it was the kids' bathroom, but not my style!)
Hm, maybe I can find out what shade that paint is for you--there are about 20 cans of extra paint in the basement that the previous owner left behind. It wasn't an AWFUL color, but totally didn't match my Croscill Rainier stuff. :)

Ok, I finally have some befores and almost afters. We hired a painter to texture and paint our family, dining and living rooms. The previous owners decided it would be a good idea to sand all the texture down in the family room. Not a good idea! Because we needed it to be textured we decided to hire someone. I did not want to do that myself! We did all the baseboards and put in the laminate floor ourselves. DH also did all the blinds, light fixtures, outlets etc.
Family room before: (right when we moved in) Notice the beautiful green carpet.

Mostly after: We still have to hang things on the walls and get new coffee and end tables. The one we have is too large. We also have to replace the back door.

Living room & Entry way: Latte

The Jalapeno is actually Venetian plaster so my painter had his supplier in Italy add tint in the plaster to match SW's Jalapeno color. It is a little darker than Jalapeno b/c of the wax on the plaster. I love it! It is bold and very unique. The texture of the Venetian plaster feels almost like photo paper.

Kopper - you room with the fireplace looks almost identical to ours. We have the vaulted ceiling and centered big brick fireplace just like that. We haven't done anything with it yet - but your bookcases gave me a lot of inspiration - are they build into the wall?
Kopper

AttyGrl74 - Thank you! Funny enough, before we put the floor in and had that room painted, I HATED those bookcases. I begged DH to let me rip them out and do something different. He liked them and wanted to keep them. Now they look great with the floor and the paint color. They are built in BTW. The shelves themselves are very narrow. Unfortunately the only place to put the tv is in front of one of the bookcases. Out of the four walls, we only really have one usable wall. One wall is open to the kitchen and has a breakfast bar (which we will probably get rid of eventually). Another wall has two windows and a door. The third wall has those two bookcases and fireplace. The last wall is the only place our couch can go.

Well by insignificant, I meant its just the hallway to our basement (not like a major room), it only took us a couple of hours and it only cost like $60 to do that. But before it looked like you were walking into a hospital and now there is more of a warm welcoming feeling.

KaliLily - We did all of the work ourselves, which saved a lot of $. We spent about 2K on materials, trying to buy stuff when Home Depot had coupons. Luckily my dad and DH had most of the tools needed. It also took a while, so that was spread out over about 9 months. The most expensive thing was the carpet, but we decided to spend more on that because we'll be using the basement quite a bit. Good luck - it's a lot of fun and rewarding!

We're in the process of finishing - we're going to do carpet, as well. Did you use a special pad or any type of vapor-barrier or membrane or anything?
I'm SO concerned with musty-smell but luckily Colorado is a really dry state.
The other thing you may want to consider if you're going with carpet is self sticking carpet squares. They're pre-padded and if you mess one up you just use a putty knife and un stick it then put a new one down. They're great for basements and play/mud rooms

I'm agreeing with LynzeyAHL
Here's a photo of my Library in my basement. The carpet is peel and stick carpet squares. It was about $1/square foot. Very easy to lay. I did it all myself!

Meggiedarlin are those the Iflor carpet squares? I was thinking about getting them for our basement and an area rug in our bedroom, but the samples feel very rough. How are they in real life?

Yay! I finally have a B&A to post. After taking nearly 2 months (the stripes were a PITA), we finally finished painting out master bath. It's not accessorized yet and I still don't know what I'm going to do with the windows but at least it's painted! :)

Hi everyone! I am delurking to post pictures of the floors we just refinished. It took us 6 days to refinish about 1600 sq. ft. We have 80 year old hardwoods too, but we did not have the patience to refinish them the way you did. We just pulled ours up. Tomorrow I need to finish pulling up the last of the 80 bazillion nails...

mandersald and SusieQ thanks for the complements on the outside and office. I have always loved colonials and wanted the house to look more colonial then it did when we bought it. KaliLily- your welcome:) glad I could help you out with a paint color. It is hard to pick out a color when there are so many choices
carrie9142 and Miel thanks for the complements. My husband designed the bookcases and had a company build them in three pieces and then we painted and installed them and we removed the crown molding from the back of the wall that we covered up by installing the built ins and reinstalled in on the front of the bookcases. It really helped make them look truly built in. To have someone make them for us was around $2,000. It was worth it though because it gave us somewhere to put are large tv and store and display things. Our house doesn't have a ton of closet space. I guess they had less items to store in 1924 when the house was built.Hope this helps.

My husband and I are throwing a huge party for Christmas, so we are in the process of redoing our home. Basically all the rooms but the bedrooms. We've almost finished the bathroom, but we're about to embark on ripping up carpet, painting, and redecorating the kitchen, dining room, living room, den, and computer room. Wish us luck.
Another question -- when you use the chair rail to split up a room -- should the darker color be on top or bottom when trying to make the room appear larger??

Reebs
08-26-2005, 04:51 AM
AmberLynn, yeah, like Lynzey said it stands for Ralph Lauren. We were VERY impressed with their paint and its quality. It went on very easy and came out very consistent. And its not much more expensive then say Behr. Maybe $1 or $2 more.
As for making the room appear larger, I'd agree with what you said about putting the darker color on the bottom. We decided to put the red on the top just because we loved the color and wanted as much as we could of it. It really doesn't make it feel that much smaller, but I think that may have to do with the fact the room gets a lot of light.
Good luck on your project. Keep us updated...I'd love to see what you do!!

Thanks!
Its a tiny room - probably 10x10. Taking out the carpet and having hardwood floors definitely makes the room look bigger than before. I think the contrast with the brown paint and white trim makes things pop a little more and doesn't look any smaller than it is. We have a futon, desk and a bookcase to hold our tv, so all of that stuff in there makes the room look small, but I don't think painting it dark made a difference at all.

Everyones transformations are amazing. Mine aren't quite as mind-blowing but it's amazing what a little paint and new carpeting will do!

mrsdrummer, nice! Is that a chair rail or the top of the tile? It makes the tub look much nicer--is that why you chose that color? Love the new floor--never understood the carpet-in-the-bath thing.
clammyinsf, I love your table! Looks like the center glass is built in, beautiful. The pass-through to the kitchen must be so convenient.

clammyinsf, your dining room looks great! I love the bench on the one side of the table. The light fixture wouldn't be all that bad if it weren't bright brass. I have seen spray paint that is supposed to dry looking just like wrought iron. I wonder if that would work on your light fixture? Anyway, great job!

tanya It's the trim piece on top of that tile board. I just chose the color cause i thought they looked good together, and I like nice warm bathrooms. the people that lived there right before us were old and I imagine didn't want to slip so they put that carpet down.

Here are before and after pictures of one of our bathrooms (a tinnny one) I painted the bathroom because we had that yellow in most part of the house and I wanted something different. Normally,I am not a big fan of purple but I am happy with the way it turned out. I replaced the drawer knobs, towel rack, and tp rack. They were shiny before and now they're nickel-finish. I still need to replace the faucet. I am proud to say I did all this myself!

Here are the before and after pics of our teeny tiny bathroom. We decided to reglaze the peach and black 40s tile, repaint, install a new light, mirror and wall cabinet. We are still waiting for the floor to come in, but once that's in we can put the toilet and sink back in and we'll be all set. I have more detailed pictures and info in my almost non-existant journal.

Oops, mine are from the 40s too - I must have mistyped it!
It is really cheap to reglaze tiles (ours was about $25) and it looks great too. The only downside is that we only have one shower in this house, and the glaze takes 5 days to dry so we had to go to MIL & FIL's house to take showers every night.

Thank you, its funny how 1 can of paint can make a huge difference!
Wow! Your bathroom looks great! We have the exact same tile in our other bathroom, peach/yellow and black. Our house was built in '42. I've been hinting DH that I want to do something about it like reglazing it. I love how your bathroom turned out! How long did the whole proccess take? Was it pricey?

Wow Delaney - your bathroom looks great! I did not know you could reglaze tiles either. Wish I knew that before I replaced my 50's pink and blue tiles. Probably could have saved lots of $$$ :)

Thanks everyone! I love the way it turned out, and I highly recommend reglazing tile instead of removing it - especially if you aren't in your forever house.
How long did the whole proccess take? Was it pricey?
Prepping the tile took about an hour.
The first coat of glaze took about 3 hours, then you wait 12 hours and do a second coat. So all together its about 7 hours of painting. Then it takes 5 days to cure, so you can't use your shower the whole time.
The great thing about it is that we were able to reglaze all of the tiles and the bathtub for about $25! No joke, its that cheap! You can buy Tough as Tile at Home Depot, or order it online like we did. Here is a link: http://paintprosusa.safeshopper.com/17/cat17.htm?234 Gosh, I sound like an infomercial! :)

I'm so excited!!!!

If any of you are interested in reglazing your bathrooms, let me know and I'll give you some tips that we learned -all of those things you wish you would have known before you did it.

I finally have some photos to share and for now they are only the exterior of the house (front and back yard.)

This was the front of our house in May. Notice all the dirt and the gravel driveway...what a pain that was to shovel in the winter.

And this gives you a great idea of what the backyard looks like. Luckily I left out the piles of garbage and gravel that are still in the very back of our yard.
