Howdy! There were a few gtgs last year (I ended up flaking after the first :(). I hope we can get something going again.
We moved to Carrollton last year from CA and it's been an...interesting...adjustment ;). But we're getting there. I actually kind of like it sometimes!

I used to work in Corinth in a new housing development. We were East of 35, off Corinth Rd. I got the same answer you do when I told people, even natives, where I worked. Where?!?

I'm in Dallas - just south of Farmers Branch. Saving up for a move up into the northern suburbs next year, though, depending on how things go with DH's job.
For those near there, there's a great restaurant that serves homestyle food in Carrollton called Babe's. They've got great food and atmosphere. All their waitresses take turns singing country songs. They don't advertise, so they rely on word of mouth. I'll have to ask DH where it is exactly... The sides are automatic...green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, salad, bread...and then you pick your meat. They've also got great peach cobbler and banana pudding.

I just saw on the news that a Fort Worth food bank caught fire this morning. They had to discard all the food they had at the bank and will have to start over. I cannot remember the name of the food bank that caught fire, but it is ok because they don't have anywhere to store food right now. Other metroplex food banks are going to step up to take care of the 1200 families the food bank that burned served. Obviously this creates a shortage of food for a lot of families. If anybody is able to donate, I am sure any of the local food banks could use extra food to cover the increased load.
Here's a website that lists food banks that are part ofThe North Texas Food Bank agency. (http://www.ntxfoodbank.org/ma_find.cfm)

The story of my life! It has gotten to where you can't get anywhere in the Denton/Corinth area in a decent amount of time between construction, general traffic, etc. It sucks.

Hello, just wanted to delurk to say hi. I live in Mansfield and I am also a Babe's Addict. They have just opened one in Burleson. Love it.
Hey ladies! I just wanted to give an advance warning that the hubby and I will be heading out y'all's way in late September for the Austin City Limits Festival. We'd love to arrange a get together out there and start a tradition of meeting members from around the country.
I know that Austin isn't all that close to DFW, but maybe with a carpool or two it just might be doable. I've started a thread (and made it a sticky) in the SW forum. Hope to see y'all soon!

Hey ladies...just wanted to give a warning about a company...I need a tree in my front yard cut down and had called around to get several estimates. A Better Arborist was one of them, but I got a skeevy feeling from them right off the bat, so we had pretty much decided not to go with them. I was going to call him back to let him know, but I was waiting until all estimates were done before I called anybody back - plus, DH still was thinking maybe about him because he was $600 less than other people. He called today... Here's an email I sent to DH about it.
***
Todd with A Better Arborist called me and was upset that I hadn't called him back yet. I tried to explain that we were still trying to decide what we were going to do and that I would call him when we had decided. He demanded to know what I wanted to pay and I said, "I am not discussing that with you. I will discuss what I'm willing to pay with my husband."
He said, "Let me tell you...when I come out and do a free estimate, that is my time I am spending. You seem angry that I even called you back, but to be honest, I'm upset I haven't heard from you yet." I said, "I'm not angry."
He said, "Listen, I have 30 guys out right now about to finish a project on Midway. They can come take down your tree this afternoon for $650. This is a one-time offer." I said, "I'm really sorry but I can't make a spur of the moment decision about that much money without talking to my husband. But, I did want to ask if you were insured and bonded."
He got angry that I asked that and said, "Listen, I've been doing this since 1968. I have 1 million dollars of property insurance and all my guys are bonded. Do me a favor. Never call my business again."
What did I do wrong?
***
Why might I have sounded angry? Well, probably because I'm 30 weeks pregnant, have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, was at the doctor for 3 hours today, was trying to figure out some things my diet when he called, and on top of that, I've got acid reflux and bad tonsils that are getting worse and worse which make my voice hoarse.
I really want to give this guy a piece of my mind, but I have no clue what to say...so I'll just settle for spreading the word about him.

I would love to go to Ikea!!! I've been to the one in Houston on the weekends a few times and it still has huge crowds. I have been to an Ikea before...the one in Philly. It was not impressive. The lamps I bought broke within a week of purchasing them and the futon my cousin bought broke very soon, too.
I'm in no rush to get up there...though for someone who wants to go and avoid crowds, I'd wait at least a month.

I haven't been yet. DH and I might go tomorrow just out of curiosity. I went to IKEA a few times when I lived in California, and I remember that the quality of their products wasn't very good (a lot of pressboard furniture). I think the building looks hideous, it looks like a big electric-blue spaceship landed in Frisco.

Ikea.... My sister wanted to go on Friday so I went with her. I didn't buy much, just a few little inexpensive things. Then Saturday morning DH decided he wanted to go too. So we went on Saturday afternoon. Friday night my sister and I just walked in the door but on Saturday DH and I had to wait about 20 mins to get in. We ended up buying a coffee table, three end tables and a framed picture/painting. The quality on somethings isn't the best but some things are nice. Most things aren't my style but it was fun to go. I don't think we will go back for awhile b/c it is so darn busy.

No way am I heading to IKEA yet. I don't need anything there that badly to deal with long lines and crowds. I made the mistake of going to the one in Houston once....it was so busy, we happened to go on they day that one of the Trading Spaces guys was there.

I had my DD at Presbyterian Dallas and cannot say enough good things about it. It has consistantly been voted one of the best places in Dallas to have a baby by Dallas Child magazine. The nurses and doctors were amazing, very caring, well informed, and concerned about my health and my daughter's. The security is very tight, so there were no worries about anything happening to DD. The waiting areas were nice and comfortable (my sister had my nephew there, too). They had lots of vending machines and free coffee & water. I am pretty sure they also had a special area for children, but really can't remember much about it. It was such a wonderful place to have my daughter. They have free tours of the maternity wing on the weekends; your friend and husband ought to take one. Here is a link to their website: Presbyterian Dallas (http://www.texashealth.org/hospitals/default.asp?level=2&id=&name=PresbyterianDallas/ServicesDepartments&enorgid=FD16313ECC5746F587B853622D072D1F&showtitle=false&intro=false&service=ED47D0F28A92440686F43238337CF6AF&svc=Women's%20and%20Infants'%20Services).

We're in Little Elm....everytime I tell someone where we live they look at me like I'm crazy. We're north of The Colony, SE of Denton, close to Corinth....
IKEA No way!!! DH asked me when I was going to go and I told him "maybe next summer". 121 was already bad enough and now you couldn't pay me to go sit in traffic just to go shopping there! ;)

I've heard great things about Presbyterian Dallas, but I'd worry about the drive in to get there...especially if you hit rush hour or there are road closings at the high-five construction. Rowlett is pretty far away from Presby Dallas...but maybe there's a Presby branch closer.
I'd recommend my own doctor, Kelli Culpepper, and hospital, Medical City Dallas, but again, it's so far from Rowlett.

I've been to Ikea twice in the last week. Once on Thursday and once yesterday. Thursday was bad enough, but yesterday was miserable. Some people walking so slowly to look at every single thing...others practically plowing over anyone in their way. I just wanted to show DH some kitchen cabinets and lights, but had to walk about a mile between the car and store and back and walking around the store.
I think we won't go back for several months.

Lake Point in Rowlett is supposed to be a pretty good hospital. We had a friend deliver there a month before DD was born and she loved it.
Also, when I was pg we lived on the edge of Garland/Rowlett and it was just a 20 minute drive to the hospital. My dr. was right by the hospital, too, and the drive wasn't that bad at all.

We went to Ikea last Saturday. I'm in love with it. We have about an hour drive (we are in sw Fort Worth) but it was worth it. Hello Ladies~
My best friend is moving to the Dallas area pretty soon and I wanted to ask you ladies about some areas that are nice. She has a 2 year old son and travels around town for her job so location isn't really key. She has mentioned to me some areas such as Frisco, Plano,Cedar Hill and some others I can't remember. She is looking for a pretty nice place to call home. She also wants to buy a house. Do you all have nay opinions about the areas I named or any other places. She has a fiance and they are looking to buy a house in the 200's I think.
Thanks in Advance

cr8nme,
If she's not particular on North Dallas, you could suggest Forney to her. It has a small town feel, though it is growing. There are a lot of new builds in the community (though I'd suggest steering clear of a place called Windmill Farms). The schools are great. It is about 20 minutes from downtown Dallas without traffic.
Cedar Hill is in South Dallas. I don't recommend it. Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Allen, Coppell, Little Elm...those are all North and Far North Dallas and are nice.
lauren f s
09-16-2005, 07:05 AM
cr8nme: My parents live in the Mesquite, very close to Forney and I agree with everything lml said. It's a great area to live and the schools around there are all really good.

Thank you for the great responses. May I ask why Cedar Hill is not recommeded? Are there certain areas where there is a high minority population...as my friend is black but doesn't have to live around other blacks. Just asking.
thedoorchick
09-18-2005, 05:22 AM
I have to disagree with the previous comments on Cedar Hill. I'd absolutely recommend it; in fact, we seriously considered it at one time. We only decided not to live there because it's so far south of town and all our family and friends are on the north side.
I know a couple of people who live down there and there are some really nice areas. It's near the lake and there are quite a few newer communities going up. I would definitely put that area under consideration.
There are a lot of minorities in the DeSoto area, as well as some other communities in south Dallas.

Hi Gals!
I just recently moved to the Dallas area. I moved here from New Mexico at the beginning of the month and I am still trying to get situated. First of all, I really like it here. We live in Kaufman county, between Forney and Heath. When I say we, I mean my fiance Jon and our two furbabies, Maggie and Pikey and our turtle, Pants.
A couple things I have noticed since I got here (for what it's worth).
1. People are WAY friendlier here then in NM.
2. It's REALLY flat.
3. Groceries are less expensive, as is gasoline, books, and insurance.
4. The traffic SUCKS! I really need to become a more aggressive driver when traffic is moving and more patient when it isn't.
5. All food is fried.
6. People are really into highschool football.
7. Everything really is BIGGER in Texas.
So, I'll be around. I need to do some wedding invitation shopping if anyone has any good reviews.
Cheers!

I think I've seen Chisolm Ridge - maybe? We live in Tehama Ridge - it's a brand new DR Horton community. We lived in Watauga, briefly and then found this place. We do enjoy it out here, but to do anything, it is a drive. I can't wait for the mall area to start developing so a dinner out isn't such a hassle!
WestieMomma
09-22-2005, 07:44 PM
How funny..we live really close! I drive right by Tehama Ridge everyday...it looks like a nice neighborhood. Chisolm Ridge is right off Harmon Rd (right there by Heritage Trace) and 287. I have heard they are building a shopping center that is going to be like Southlake Town Square right at 287 and 35W..I hope they put in some decent restaurants there. i am getting sick of all the ones in Fossil Creek and DH acts like it is such a pain to drive anywhere further.
kristin9903
09-23-2005, 06:08 AM
Westie and Riley I've heard of both your places, but I don't think I've ever been by them. I live in Fossil Creek, at a subdivision right at 820 and 35 (mine's a DR Horton Community, too!). We only eat in Fossil Creek, too...and there's only so much Chili's I can take! :)
rileyandfredsmom
09-23-2005, 03:36 PM
yeah, I live about 2 exits back towards Denton, Kristin. Which DR model do you have? We have the Canyon Falls and although I didn't like it on the walk through because it didn't have arched ceilings, I am totally in love with it now and so glad my husband talked me into it!
rileyandfredsmom
09-23-2005, 03:48 PM
Westie - I'm glad you mentioned that the shopping center was going to be like Southlake Towne Center - that makes me feel a little better. We knew they were building a mall in this area - we just didn't know where, until about a week after we bought the house and the signs went up. That's OK though, I'm looking forward to having some restaurants nearby, and SHOPPING too.

We have a Rockdale, which I love. It's a very open floorplan. Plus, they let us bargain a lot with them, so we got all our upgrades for only $1000! DH wasn't hugely excited about it, but once we got all the flooring in and he saw what it would actually look like, he fell in love. :)
WestieMomma
09-23-2005, 06:38 PM
Well I've heard they are building a mall by Cabela's and one in Trophy Club..these are in addition to that shopping center I was talking about..but I don't know how true it is about the malls. Two seems like a lot even if the area is growing a lot. I just hate fighting the traffic to drive to North East mall.
rileyandfredsmom
09-24-2005, 06:02 AM
Kristin - we didn't upgrade anything as we didn't find the house until it was already built. This community is in phase one so they came in and pre-built a lot of homes to sell. I hate our coutertops and cabinets but we can change those eventually. Right now, everything is staying put, I'm not even going to paint until next year. Our year has been awful so we are just going to sit back and enjoy being in our home and not do any projects for once.
Westie - that does sound like a lot of malls for one area. At least we won't have to make the trek to Hurst (which I am doing today) to get things. I know it will take a while but a few things should start popping up within the next year, I saw bulldozers pulling into one area yesterday to start staging.
This is a great area, I'm surprised more people don't consider it. I don't understand everyone going to North Dallas, this area is much nicer, I think, at least.
Another North Fort Worth girl here. We're live at 35 and 820 in The Crossing at Fossil Creek. We've lived in this area for about 4 years now, and we love it. Definitely ready for more shopping and restaurants though!
kristin9903
09-24-2005, 10:49 AM
Hey Rio...we're totally in the same subdivision!!! :)
Riley Ours was pretty much built, too. It didn't have any flooring laid down, so that was a lot of our upgrades. Plus, I made them add some phone/cable jacks in. The countertops were in, too, but we made them rip them out (ugly!!!). We closed on the house in late December, so it wasn't "buying season" and they were more than willing to accomodate! :)

Since I live in Corinth and am in grad school in Ft. Worth, I drive through your area pretty often (especially in the summers when I am not teaching). In fact, I have been known to stop at the Starbuck's at Western Center a lot on my way to and/or from class. Just found this thread. Cool to see more Dallas girls. I recognized "Dallaslady" from Wc and I use to stop by the thread once in a blue moon.
We live in Denton/Aubrey area, off of HWY380 in the Providence subvision. To do anything in this area is a drive. There is only so much Subway and Sonic a person can take. I mean seriously, can we get a Mickey D's or a Wendy's. I have to go all the way to ummm Little Elm(?) maybe its The Colony just to go to Wendy's.
anyway, I just wanted to say hi to everyone.

kcgrayYou live right by me! Don't try to come here to eat....all we have is Subway, Sonic, Chicken Express, some weird taco place! The Wendy's is actually in Frisco but it's between L.E. and The Colony. I can't wait until we get more businesses up this way. I'd kill for a Target! :D We hate the drive too. DH works in The Colony and traffic on 423 is horrible (it's still 2 lanes only in most parts)! Do you go to Denton much? I've thought of going there for groceries, etc instead of Frisco, but I don't know what they have in Denton.

I thought that Wendy's on 423 was Little Elm. I'm with you though, I can't wait to get more businesses this way. And I mean BIG businesses. The target in McKinney is not even a SuperTarget and its super mall so is the one in Denton. My husband works off of 423. Ummm do they work together I wonder. LOL That would be funny. He is at 423 and Witt. I go to Denton every other day..the drive is actually better than going into Frisco(I just hate to drive) Let's see..if you go down 380 to Loop 288 make a left on 288..keep going there is a whole lot of shopping going on. There is a Super Wal-Mart, Petsmart, Krogers, nail shops, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, ummm Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dollar General. Then there is a Target & Golden Triangle mall. The mall is ok I usually go to the Barnes & Noble inside the mall. My mom said there is a Ross inside the mall but I've never seen it cause I usually go to the book store.
All of these stores are small compared to in the city. The ladies in Michaels said Lewisville would be the next time over for the bigger stores which I figured.
Also have you ever traveled 380 until it turns into University over by the college, there is alot of shopping areas there. I usually grocery shop at the Wal-Mart or Kroger on 288 though.

I thought the Wendy's was Little Elm too. We go to that Compass Bank by Wendy's and I had to have something sent to the bank and called for their address and they said Frisco...weird!
My husband works in The Colony as a teacher/coach. He's close to 121 off of Main.
I've driven all the way through Denton going towards Decatur---I go that way to see my parents in west Texas. I'll have to go explore around 288. I wonder if its any closer than Frisco. For sure there would be less traffic! Thanks for all the info!

that's weird about the Wendy's being Frisco because the street my husband works on is right across the street and their address is Little Elm and its not a long street..in fact its a dirt road.
288 is definitely closer than Frisco. 380 & 75 there are some shopping centers. That's McKinney and its about the same driving distance as Loop 288. Have fun exploring.
Kristin-how funny that we're in the same subdivision! Is it just me, or does it seem like now that the neighborhood is finished, all the houses are going up for sale? There are like 5 houses for sale on my street alone!

These were taken at Willow Bend Mall in Plano. We were going to do outdoor pics, but the weather was horrible. I think they still turned out well!

She lives in north Dallas and would probably come to your house or you could come to hers. I don't know if it would make you feel weird to go to her house/have her come to yours but she is SO nice and easy going. I love her photos more than any pro ones we've ever had. I'll get back to you with her email address.

I used Gina Propp with Realife Photography for Natalie's newborn shots. Her specialty is children, but she might do belly shots. She comes to your house and charges a $75 sitting fee and then you buy the photos you want. Her website is www.realifephotography.com. I can email you an example, if you want...it is actually our announcement.

I have a fabulous stylist in Denton. The salon is called Escape Spa and Salon and his name is Jim Fife. I have gone to him since I was 10...so over 18 years now. No one else is allowed to touch my hair. Even when I lived in Florida, I flew back every 12 weeks to have my hair cut and colored by him (my hair was very long then). My entire family goes to him as well as many friends. Plus I find his prices very reasonable. The salon is located off I-35 E on Lillian Miller. Let me know if you need any other info.

I wanted to come back by here. We moved to Irving in November. We're actually in Las Colinas, a block away from where they have the Byron Nelson. We love the area.
Does anyone live around here? Or have you?
We have the simplest request: good Chinese food. We've been dying for some decent Chinese but are afraid to try anything for fear of it being awful. Anyone nearby know anything good?

I can't remember the name of it but I used to live in that area and there was a Chinese food place we used to get food from now and then. Lovers Egg Roll, maybe? It's on MacArthur, right by Einstein Bros bagels.
I'm not a big lover of Chinese food, so maybe my opinion shouldn't be trusted, but we both liked it fine.

Well we got Chinese on Sunday. I called Pei Wei, but they don't deliver and we were not about to go out to eat in all that rain. I did find a place on MacArthur & Walnut Hill (right up the street) but they never answered the phone.
So we went with Empress of China on Beltline. They had a decent review in Guidelive so we gave it a shot. It was pretty good. Not fantastic, but good for Chinese delivery.

I hope it's ok that I pop in here with some questions :)
I am in the process of looking into grad programs in Library Science and UNT has a program that I am _really_ interested in...but I thought I would stop here and ask for info on the area.
What is Denton like? How about UNT? Love it? Hate it? It seems pretty large but numbers don't always tell the real story. Is it diverse? What are the schools like? Are people nice? Housing? How much are ya'll paying for gas right now? That might be the clincher for me ;) Oh, and this might be a bit much to ask for, but info. on the local high school(s) would be appreciated because DH works with h.s. kids and it would be nice to see if there are opportunities for him as well.
TIA-I've only been to Texas once and that was to Houston, but I figure any place with warmer weather than WI has got to be a great place to live :D

I grew up in Denton and after moving around the state and to Florida, I am back living right outside of Denton again.
Denton is not a bad place to live. I think I give it a hard time sometimes because I grew up here, you know? It has grown a lot, so there is a better selection of shopping, restaurants, etc. There are two universities but it is not a big city. What I like about it is that Denton is more laid back than Dallas. There are some good places to hang out that aren't as "uppity" as Dallas. But Dallas is pretty diverse, too, and we do like going down there for the night life occasionally. UNT can be considered an artsy-fartsy school by some - mostly because it has excellent music and art departments, but it is also pretty diverse. As a whole, I would say that Denton is on the conservative side minus the university. Others may disagree with me, but I went to UT-Austin and after living in Austin for so long, Denton seems conservative.
House prices are great, IMO. You definitely get a lot for your money compared to suburbs closer to Dallas and especially compared to other parts of the country. That is why we bought in Corinth as opposed to other Dallas suburbs.
Ft. Worth is about 45 minutes away and Dallas is 30-90 minutes away depending on traffic. Traffic has gotten worse in the Denton area lately and they are trying to improve highways, big streets, etc. but it is hard to keep up with the growth. But compared to downtown Dallas, it isn't that bad.
Right now gas prices are high for this area - $2.49 I think, but a few weeks ago it was $2.05 so it varies.
I believe there are 3 high schools in Denton now. Overall, the schools are good. I graduated from HS over 10 years ago, so I don't know what they are like or what it is like to teach for the school district. I teach in Lewisville ISD, which is fairly close by. I live just south of Denton in Corinth and my drive in rush hour traffic is 20 minutes to work and 20-30 minutes home. Of course, if there is a wreck it is a lot worse.
If there is anything else you would like to know, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer your questions. Years ago when my husband (then FH) got out of the Navy we decided to leave Pensacola and either go to the Denton area where my parents are or to the Miami area where his parents live so that we would have a place to stay until we found jobs. I voted Denton hands down - I personally would rather live in the Dallas area than down in Miami.
My DH is working on his MBA at UNT and has been pretty satisfied with the university. My dad is the Medical Director of the Student Health Center at UNT and other than the usual red tape, etc. that goes along with working for a university, he really likes it. He has been there for about 12 years I think.
Anyway, hope this helps!

JRose Hi. I live about 15 minutes outside of Denton, so I'll answer the questions I can for you. My BIL goes to UNT and likes it. His major is business related though so I don't know much about the Library Science program there. The people in Denton seem very friendly, but I'm biased because I think the majority of Texans are super friendly! I think the good thing about Denton is that it is big enough to do everything you want to there-eat out, shop, live, etc. but you always have the option to go to Dallas or other suburbs too. Housing around here is really reasonable. We live in Little Elm if you want to look that up-there are tons of new houses being built here and it's a great area. My DH is a high school teacher/coach in The Colony which is part of Lewisville ISD (pretty close to Denton). It's a great district and there are lots of good opportunities in the education field around here. PM me if you want more info on Lewisville ISD schools.
Oh and gas-I filled up last week for $2.52. But that's the highest its been in months.

hey lml. Glad to hear you live your new home! We have some friends interested in Forney. So you like that area?
Yeah, we like it. It is developing, so there isn't a whole lot right now, but there will be. We have a new Wal Mart and we're getting a Lowe's. There are 3 Mexican restaurants and a really good coffee shop. We've got a couple pizza joints and barbeque places, but other than that...not too many restaurants. Oh, there's a new Chili's, Wendy's and Sonic.
Are they interested in building? If so, we HIGHLY recommend our builder and community. If they are, PM me and I'll tell you where we live.
eta: If they are wanting to build, you can still refer them to Casey if they don't have a realtor. She helped us out a lot with this deal...not so much the price, but with staying on top of the builder.

Natrat80 - Thanks! I'm delivering at Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton. My OB is wonderful but she is in Flower Mound so that is probably too far for you. Thanks again for recommending Nikki to me. We loved her photos and are planning on having her take pictures of Jacob when he is born.
WestieMomma - I had to do a double take with your new user name :) Thanks! It has really gone fast and is going to go even faster since I'm going to be induced Thursday night/Friday morning. Hope all is going well with you and sorry about never getting back to you about getting together.
UTChick - Thanks! We can't wait to meet him. :)
dpangel33 - We had 4" this weekend. It's a lot less than other areas but I'm not complaning since we won't have to water this week.
JRose - I grew up south of Denton and still live about 15-20 minutes away. We really like the area and get up that way about once a month. UNT is a pretty nice campus. My sister graduated from there a year ago. She really enjoyed it. Since it is a college town there is always a lot of stuff going on. They have decent nightlife, lots of good local restaurants and plenty of places to shop. Recently they have built a lot of the chain stores south of the university and the local mall (Golden Triangle) is doing a lot better than it had in years. I don't know about Denton schools but like UTChick & Natrat80 said Lewisville ISD is a good district. We have 5 high schools and all are good IMO. The only thing about Denton is that it can be far if you work further south (like Irving for me and Garland for DH) since I35 can be a mess.
miaclear - Mine is in Flower Mound if you get desperate! :)
UTChick - Great description of Denton. ITA about giving it a hard time b/c you grew up there. We do the same thing with Lewisville/FM.

Take that north from 121 for about 10 miles then turn left onto FM 720 and there is Little Elm!) It's also really close to Frisco if that helps!
Dallas Arboretum DD and I went to the Arboretum yesterday with some friends and it was beautiful! I'd never been before but we'll definitely be going again. We took some spring pictures of DD and had so much fun! I wanted to recommend it to you all.

I just got 10 emails today with replies to this thread :p
Thank you all for the information! It is so great to hear from people that actually live there/around there. It sounds like Denton is a lot larger than we are used to (I think we have 40,000 people here). It would be a nice change to have a Target nearby. I am having a hard time making this decision...I suppose I should just apply and see if I get in :o
DH is at a conference in D.C. this week and met someone from Dallas who gave UNT props, so now he is more interested in me checking it out.
Natrat80 your daughter is so cute! That's a great picture!
I'm sure I will be back later with more questions :)

I don't know if you are interested in loans but the FAFSA is due by April 1st.
And they are about to start registration for orientation (required for all new students, not sure about grads tho) and it gets filled up fast. The earlier the registration the more choices you get in classes and availability.
Good Luck!!

question
Anyone have a rec for a good person to put down tile in our bathrooms? We currently have carpet  and are ready to put down tile. Oh, and we're up in Little Elm.

Nat~ Sorry I can't help you on the tile layer. I don't know anyone who does that.
Question:
We live in Corinth, just south of Denton. DH may be getting an offer for a job in Midlothian. It would be about a $20,000-$25,000 raise. However, the drive sounds like a monster. Anyone know what kind of drive he would have to face with traffic? It is almost 60 miles, and Mapquest says 1 hour and 4 minute drive, so I am thinking 1 1/2 hours with traffic. If it were closer to an hour, I would tell him to go for it - that it would be worth it for the money, but if it is more like 1 1/2 to 2 hours, I am thinking no way.
thedoorchick
04-15-2006, 06:25 PM
UTchick, that drive would indeed be a monster.
I'll put it this way, no amount of money would be enough for me to drive from Corinth to Midlothian every day.
UTChick
04-16-2006, 09:23 AM
That is what I am thinking. My dad used to drive from the north side of Denton to Duncanville for work and it could easily be a 90 minute drive one way. Midlothian is even farther. I think I should have DH make the drive down there one day and let him see for himself how bad it would be. Thanks. :)

UTChick Chiming in late on this, but we have family in Midlothian and it takes us a good 45 minutes or so to get to their house on a weekend from NE Fort Worth. I can't even imagine what a morning daily commute would be like from Denton.

Hi all, I just found this thread. Has anyone moved to the Dallas area from Southern California. The reason I'm asking is because I LOVE California (I live in San Diego) and I don't want to move...alot of it is because of the beautiful weather we have. So I have some questions: 1) how humid is it in the Dallas area 2) what about the bugs 3)how cold does it get in the winter and 4) does it snow . I know Texas has the seasons and that's plus but I just need a boost to want to move there. We might be moving in that area in about 2 years. Thanks!

Renee
1) how humid is it in the Dallas area
not humid at all compared to other places I've lived and been to in Texas
2) what about the bugs
Mosquitoes are the only annoying ones I can think of, of course it depends on if you live in Dallas or the burbs. We live almost out in the country and we have some silverfish (never heard of them until we lived here) and we even have frogs! (yes I know that isn't a bug but I had to mention that! ;) )
3)how cold does it get in the winter and 4) does it snow
Recent winters have been very mild. We had one snow/ice storm this year where school was cancelled and the roads were slick, but that's about it. Usually we get one snow a year.
I know Texas has the seasons and that's plus but I just need a boost to want to move there. We might be moving in that area in about 2 years. Thanks!
I wouldn't count on seasons in Texas-its really either freaking hot or cool/cold Hope that helps!

Renee....there are no seasons here. It's Damn HOT, or miserably cold and windy (did you know that Dallas is actually more windy than Chicago). There are a few weeks where we get nice 70 degree weather but I don't count on them too much. Of course I grew up in Minnesota where there are real actual seasons.
dpangel33
04-25-2006, 08:30 PM
Hi baboo, if you're in Bedford you're not too far from Empress of China in Colleyville (121 & glade). I used to eat there all the time and even after I moved if I was even near the area we'd pick some up to-go. I haven't been in probably a year, but my family still eats there so I'm assuming it's still good.
Oh I almost forgot, my DH found a place called Chef Chu here in the Las Colinas area and it's been pretty decent so far. I wouldn't choose delivery as the food is never as fresh with any restaurant, so hubby picks it up and it's been pretty tasty (I always order the sesame ckn and egg drop soup).
And I must agree TX only has two seasons which feels more like one long season of summer more and more every year  DH has already determined once I graduate in two years we are out of TX for good.

Thank you for those of you that answered my questions about weather in Dallas. Another question....we are thinking about the Garland, Frisco, or Plano areas, is there anything you can tell me about them? And as for the few that had aswered about the weather...is it so hot and humid that I will just hate it there or is it barable? I'm just so worried I will not like it.
dpangel33
04-30-2006, 06:19 PM
Honestly DH and I are looking into moving to the west coast in about 2-5 years b/c we dislike TX so much...
And I would suggest not owning a black vehicle or a vehicle with black interior (especially leather) b/c of the summer heat.
Sorry to be such a downer :o
Natrat80
04-30-2006, 06:32 PM
Renee I agree that a black vehicle gets really hot in the summer, but honestly you get used to it. I love Texas even though it has its downfalls, it will always be home to us!
Plano is a great city. DH and I lived there when we first got married. For the most part it is a very safe town. It has VERY affluent areas (like where Dallas Cowboys live), middle class areas, and low income areas. DH and I taught in Plano schools-he in an upper class school, I was in a low income school. Plano ISD is a great district with a great reputation if that matters to you. The west part of Plano is very affluent, middle part is affluent/middle class, east part is middle class/lower income. (of course there are exceptions) Plano has great shopping, is located close to Dallas, close to major highways, etc.
Frisco is just north/NW of Plano and it's also a great area. Up until probably 7 years ago Frisco was in "the country" but now it is booming. Like Plano, it has great shopping, great schools, and I would dare say it is middle to upper class for the most part. I've never seen a "poor" area of Frisco. Since it is growing so fast there is lots of construction going on (new restaurants, retail, etc. as well as road construction) and getting to Dallas may take a little longer. We have lots of friends that live in Frisco and they love it and we love to visit them! We live a few miles from Frisco in Little Elm (don't know if you can find it on a map!) and I do most of our shopping in Frisco.
Garland I don't know much about Garland---sorry I can't help you there!
Will you move to Dallas for job opportunity or just to move? My advice if you or you DH will work downtown would be to really investigate how long your commute will be before you decide where to live. I think any of the suburbs you are considering would be great, I'm partial to Plano and Frisco though. ;)

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. We actually live in SW Fort Worth. We moved here 4 years ago from Missouri. I'm a SAHM (just recently, use to work for Lockheed) and DH is an aerospace engineer working for Lockheed. I have an 8 yo DD, 2 yo DD and a DS due Sept. 4.
Does anyone know any good, but cheap, carpet cleaning companies? It seems everyone as complaints against them. Guess I just need to pick one a go with it.

Natalie, thank you so much for taking the time to tell me about those cities, it has really helped me. We live in Southern California and it has gotten so bad here economy wise, I can't beleive it. The average price of a house in our area is $600,000. (our house is only about 1600 sq. ft., that's rediculous for that kind of $). All of my family live in the San Diego area, parents, one brother and four sisters, nieces and nephews and everyone seems to want to move to Texas for different reasons. Some want to move for jobs, some just because it's SO expensive to live here. And really looking into the future, it would be easier to retire there. Thanks again Natalie for your input, I appreciate it. I might just have some more questions later on.

05-03-2006, 01:07 PM
Renee34, I think I can help you :). I grew up in Huntington Beach and lived in the Bay Area before moving out here. I won't lie; it was a major adjustment and I was homesick for quite a while. I don't think I would have considered myself truly happy here until 6 months ago (after being here for 18 months). I'm sure it would have been much easier if we had family considering the move, too.
We moved for DH's job, but I only agreed when I saw the housing prices. :p I wasn't too concerned about the weather, not after enduring 6 years in St. Louis, but I'm dreading this summer. I think I started liking it here 6 months ago when the temps started to drop, and now that they're going up again, I'm going to hate it. Seriously, I love being able to work on my front porch (I work from home), and this winter has been mild enough for me to do it often. By June I'll have to limit my porch time to before 8am. :( The humidity is nothing compared with St. Louis, and is really only a problem during storms. In fact, on average, I think HB is much more humid than Dallas, but has the ocean breeze to cool things off.
I admit to creating some of the culture shock myself by aplying my own biases. "Oh my god, these highways are impossible to navigate! In Ca...." or "Every friggin' vehicle on this road is a giant SUV/truck!! In CA..." or even worse, "In CA, people are much more open-minded..." You get the idea. When you miss some place, it's hard not to make the negative comparisons. But you soon you remember all the negatives about SoCal and can apply them here :). In CA, every friggin' vehicle on the road is high-end luxury!" or "In CA, it seems like everybody is a hard body, and there's so much pressure..." (although you'll hear that one said about a certain few neighborhoods in Dallas; luckily it isn't pervasive).
I read somewhere that the metroplex has more restaurants & shops per capita than anywhere else in the country. I figured that had to be because there just weren't as many people here, and that there were no more restaurants or shops than usual. Not true. Shops & restaurants are *everywhere,* and they're always busy.
When DH & I first moved here, we were surprised not to see as many luxury cars as we did in CA, and we live in a pretty high-end area. So we couldn't understand, with real estate so cheap & salary differences no where near making it up, what did people spend their money on? First thing we noticed was that everyone ate out, all. the. time. Clothes and general shopping, obviously, since all those stores are staying in business. There are a lot more SAHMs, and finally, diamonds :D. No, I don't want to sound stereotypical, but there seemed to be a lot more women with large diamonds. Not that the large diamonds are larger, just that more women have good-size diamonds.
As to where to reside, I can help if you don't mind me asking some very specific questions. It is kinda hard in the beginning to translate what you like about where you live in CA to where you might like to live here. Send me a PM, or let me know if you want me to ask the questions here in the thread.

Hello, hope people are still posting here! We are moving to Dallas from OKC on Memorial Day weekend and I don't know the area very well. We are living at an apartment in Coppell until we find a house. Any advise on if this is an okay area and what areas to avoid? Also, does anyone have any favorite restraunts or bars that I should check out?
TIA!

Welcome, PrincessCJ81! Your question would probably take an entire day to answer, so let me try to narrow some of it down.
Why are you moving here? Where will you / your DH be working?
What kind of environment are you looking to live in? Urban, suburban, a mix of two, country, etc?
Does the age of the house matter, and how so?
What kind of entertainment do you enjoy?
As I said above, there are more restaurants & shops in the Metroplex than I've seen anywhere else, so regardless of where you live, you'll never be far from activity and entertainment. A good number of them are chain restaurants, but each neighborhood has its independent gems.
There is a lot of urban redevelopment in Dallas & a lot of wonderful places to live, but there are also a lot of companies moving into the suburbs, livening their downtowns & urban areas.

We are moving to Dallas for DH job. He is working in Addison and I am working in Irving.
We would prefer to live outside of the city. We have two dogs that need plenty of yard room. Of course, I prefer not to have too terrible of a commute as well. ((I think I want the impossible). Prefer a home built 1999 or later.
As for entertainment, we like good food, good beer and good music. We are Definatley not into the night club scene. Any reccomendations on good Mexican food or a good steakhouse(prefereably not chainy)?

Coppell is a great area. Nice and central to Irving and Addison. You could also look at Carrollton.
As for good Mexican...while it is a (small) chain, I like Mi Cocina. My favorite steakhouse is Houston's. Yum! For a different take on steak, you could try Fogo de Chao or Texas de Brazil in Addison. They're $40/person for dinner, though. Drinks and dessert are extra (and by the glass, except for tea and water), of course.

I'm partial to Carrollton :). And it's very central to Addison & Irving (20 minutes to each during rush-hour), as well as Plano and Dallas. It straddles Dallas & Denton county and it's almost like two different cities. The Denton County side is newer and part of a better school district. There isn't much new-construction left in Carrollton, but many neighborhoods in north carrollton are 7 years old or newer. In fact, if you're interested, I can give you some very specific information on new and newer houses in the area in a PM.
Good Mexican is a toughie, since it depends on how authentic you like it. There are steak houses galore throughout the area such as Three Forks (Addison) & Love & War in Texas (Grapevine); you really can't go wrong with any of them. I've been to a bunch of places recently but can't remember all the names; give me some time to think about it :).

it's a bug He's not our full time pedi, but the doc that took care of DS in the hospital after he was born last month was fabulous, and his practice is in Lewisville. He was great about coming in, looking in on Ethan, and talking to us. He had a terrific bedside manor and even came in to offer me some advice when he found out I was having trouble breastfeeding (he's very pro breastfeeding...which is good if you're going that route). If we didn't live in Fort Worth, we would definitely be using him.

Yes Ector is near Bonham. Only about seven miles from there. My DD uses Dr Richmond as well. My BIL used Dr Blair on Forest Lane as his pedi for a long time. Probably would still but he is 21 and needed a grown up DR.

DH's entire family has used Dr. R. Did you know he was on the US Olympic swim team the year the US boycotted the Olympics?
I don't know any pediatricians around there, as I'm from Forney (east of Dallas). The only reason I went to Dr. R. is that the ILs already knew he was a great doctor.

Thanks, Natrat and Kristen for the pedi. recs! I wil check to see if they are part of our plan. Unfortunately, since I'm delivering at Medical Center Plano, I have to find one who is on my plan AND who had rights at MCP...yet, we want to find one who is somewhere between home and work (Carrollton and Grapevine). Thanks again!

Sorry its been so long since I posted my new job is keeping me super busy. Anyone deliver at Baylor Medical in Irving or at Los Colinas medical? Also, does have an OB/GYN in Coppell/Las Colinas area?

You could PM Amie (http://www.constantchatter.com/member.php?u=1648) and ask her. She delivered at Las Colinas. :)

Since we are on the topic of doctors, anyone know any peds in the Denton area by chance? My dad is a doctor, but has been in University health for the last 10 years+ and doesn't really know about the peds, only specialists. TIA!

Has anyone attended any La Leche League meetings in Fort Worth or the mid cities?

Not mid-cities exactally but I go to LLL in Lewisville and love the group. The meetings are First Tuesdays 7pm and Second Tuesdays 10am. You can get directions from the LLL main website.

Did she deliver at the Las Colinas Medical Center? We have new insurance and my old dr isn't covered. The LCMC is very close to our apartment and I have an appt with one of the dr's who delivers there.

I believe she did. I'll send her a message via LJ and let her know to come into this thread.
Lauren,
Yes, I delivered at LCMC and LOVED it. In fact, we are moving to Frisco next year and I'm planning on driving back for my OB visits and delivery of DC#2.
It's small but the care is excellent and the nurses are wonderful.
And I can't say enough about my wonderful OB, Dr. Kristin Carmicheal and her nurse, Lane. Dr. C has a practice with Dr. Theodore Crum. Let me know if you want the number. They are truly awesome!!!
Good luck!

It's been pretty quiet in here as of late, I guess we need to stir up the pot :p
I know the three of us Dallas ladies who are due in Feb were talking about having a GTG and I didn't know if anyone else would be interested??
I was kinda thinking of dinner and a movie for a girls night at like a Movie Tavern or similar??
Or maybe for those who have dogs, a GTG at a dog park??
Does anyone have any other ideas or a particular date in mind??

DH & I are celebrating our anniversary in October and are staying in a nice hotel in downtown Dallas and are looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner. Any suggestions? We're open to most anything, just as long as it's nice and has great food!
Thanks!

I posted this in another CCer's journal a couple months ago...
Well, good barbeque... If you go to the original Sonny Bryan's on Inwood, that is pretty good. It is a local chain. There's another place you can go that is better, though. It's Sammy's Barbeque. They are open for lunch Monday-Saturday. Go to the one on Luther Ln. It is the easier one to find.
For great Italian (and really yummy bellinis!), hit up Patrizio in Highland Village.
Mi Cocina is a decent Mexican place. They are a small chain. There's one in Highland Village, but there are also several others.
I mentioned Fogo, which you said you like. In Uptown there's a competitor to Fogo, Texas de Brazil (there's also one in Addison). They're great, too.
I mentioned Houston's and their knife and fork ribs. Yum!
For good wings, you can check out Pluckers. It is a sportsy type place. Popular with the college crowd due to location, but lots of people go there. They're on Greenville between Lovers and Southwestern (you can't see it from the road, it is behind World Market).
If you want some good hot sandwiches, you can check out Texadelphia. They make a good cheesesteak (for being in Dallas, you know).
The best burgers are at JG's on Greenville and Markville. Chip's at Lovers and the Tollway is also a good place for burgers.
The food is only eh, but I love the view in Antares, which is the restaurant in Reunion Tower that revolves. You have to have reservations.
Another good steakhouse (though I've never been) is Bob's.
If you can get up to Carrollton, go to Babe's Chicken House. It is very homestyle.
Some good breakfast food can be found at The Mecca on Harry Hines (it is in the middle of a seedy area, but the cinnamon rolls are great). Also, if you can get to Mama's Daughter's Diner, they have good breakfast.
Finally, Lucky's is great for any meal. They're in uptown on Oaklawn. At the risk of being horribly un-PC, they're in an area that is very...flamboyant. The people-watching there is great.
I'd skip West End, unless you go there for AJ Gonzales. They're a good Mexican place.
I've never been, but if you want some good shopping, go to Stanley Korshak in The Crescent. It is very high end (hence why I've never been...I can do Saks from time to time, but I don't do Korshak ).
I don't know if you've made your reservations yet, but The W just opened. I don't know if Ritz has opened yet, but Hotel Zaza is pretty nice (supposedly they have a nice bar and spa, too). Also, The Mansion at Turtle Creek is a nice hotel.
If I think of other places, I'll let you know. You can check out dallas.guidelive.com for ideas, too.

Morton's has excellent steaks. It's pretty pricey. Dakota's is also good for steak. I've heard good things about The French Room but haven't been there. The Mansion is another place I would like to go.
You can check out guidelive.com for reviews.
ETA.... I forgot about Bob's Steak and Chop. Very good steaks.

I'd recommend Dakota's as well. Another good downtown restaurant is Stephan Pyles.
We went to Antares a few years ago and it was great food as well as a unique experience eating in the tower with the great view.
I don't know that I would recommend Bob's for a special dinner. The food is terrific, but the atmosphere lacks. It's quite loud and crowded-feeling.

I would also recommend Bob's but its always packed and they don't have a lot of parking but they have valet. I love Roys but that is a little far from Downtown...

Thank you all so much for the suggestions! We live in the Las Colinas area and really don't get too far away from here often. I'm going to check into all the places mentioned.

I know this thread is a bit slow, but I was hoping to get some assistance. I grew up in Arlington and my parents currently live in Mansfield. I live in NC and we are hoping to move back this summer. I'm signed up for a teacher certification course to teach grades 4-8 and was wondering if anyone knows if it's difficult to get a job teaching there. We don't have to be in Mansfield, we just want to be in the D/FW area. My parents make it sound super-easy to get a teaching job but I don't want to get excited just on their information alone. Anyone have any insight?

If you can, I would try to take the ESL certification test while you are at it. These days it is a lot easier to find a teaching job in Texas if you are ESL certified. The daughter of a teacher at my school is wanting to move from Houston to the Dallas area and is having a hard time finding a job for next year because she doesn't have her ESL cerftication. My friend, the mom, told her to get it and she didn't and now she is freaking out about finding a job. So...long story short, get the ESL certification and it will make your job search easier. I teach in Lewisville, by the way, but I am pretty sure it would be the same in most of the big districts.

Alright girls...I have never been to the Dallas area, but after doing some searching and reading, my DH and I know we would really love to move there. The University of North Texas is perfect for me too. However, we need a real reason to go...preferably a job. I have a BS degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I have three years experience working in Day Care. I would love to be working with children in some way. My husband is a Graphics Aritist. He does 3-D, animation and modeling. Does anyone know of any jobs that may be willing to give us a head start in Dallas??? I would be beyond greatful!!!!

if you teached middle school (6th, 7th, 8th) would you teach math or science? if so, it would be easy to get a job. I teach in Richardson ISD and it's really really great. If you have any questions about the suburbs around Dallas or the mid-cities, let me know. I don't know much about the suburbs around Ft. Worth.
