I know that on the other site a GTG was being planned and then the boards switched over and I could never get back to see the date and time of the GTG. Did it ever happen?

KatieKate- I'll be moving to Cumming in the next few months too! Not looking forward to the commute to work, but that town is growing on me (BF lives there) and I'm actually looking forward to the move.
I'm moving back to Atlanta in a few months. We're planning to buy a house soon, somewhere in East Cobb most likely.

Currently living in Savannah, but I spent 4 years in Atlanta when I was going to Georgia Tech. Lived in the city (on campus) for three of those years, and in Lawrenceville for the last year. I miss Atlanta sometimes for various reasons, but I don't miss the traffic!! ;)
We're in Savannah right now which is great being so close to the coast and the city is beautiful. But we're feeling ready for a change so we may be moving out of the south soon!

KatieKate- my BF (soon to be FI- keep you fingers crossed) has a small house on about 6 acres of land and we're planning on building a bigger house on it next year. He's pushing me to sell my house in Vinings, but I think I'll wait till the ring is on my finger at least. Might even consider renting it out. Do you know where in Cumming you might live?

Katiekate- my favorite new neighborhood in Cumming is called Vickery, which is towards the south side I think. Better Homes and Gardens is having a sweepstakes right now to win a fully furnished house in Vickery. We've looked at several houses in there to get ideas, and can't get over how unique each house is. A little out of our price range (by about a million dollars), but I'd certainly take one as a prize! Hi ladies - hope you don't mind I'm jumping in here. I live in the metro NOLA area and my family evacuated to the ATL area during Katrina. Some friends of my cousin were staying in a brand-new Holiday Inn Express in Bremen, GA and that's where my entire family ended up. My mom was there a little over a week, and my aunt, cousins and grandmother ended up staying for 2 weeks (until we got power at home)
We were blown away by the kindness of the people in Bremen and GA in general. The people in the area found out that we were at the hotel and sent food, cases of water, church groups cooked dinners (some of the best BBQ I have ever had in my life!), paid for us to eat at local restaurants - it was totally overwhelming. DH and I were only there for 3 days (we were on vacation when Katrina hit and had a connecting flight in ATL - worked out well that we were able to meet up with family there) but we just couldn't believe how warm and caring the community was.
Thanks to you all for being such a caring, kind group of people. Southern hospitality is not a myth - it's real and we found it in GA! We liked it so much there, DH and I were tempted to move to the ATL area, which is a pretty big deal, because we're otherwise die-hard New Orleanians.
When things get back up and running better in NOLA, we hope y'all will come and visit us. Your area took in so many people from our area that we'd love to have you in NOLA and reciprocate.

Hi! I just thought I would pop in here in hopes that someone could recommend a nice restaurant in the Atlanta area. DH and I are heading there for a wedding and we have a free night, so we'd like to go out to nice dinner. We are staying at the W Hotel (Perimeter Center) but we will have a rental car so we can drive to another nearby area if necessary. TIA!!

10-03-2005, 12:44 PM
What is your price range? Do you want something unique to the area, or a nice chain like Maggianos or PF Changs? There are some nice restaurants near your hotel, you shouldn't have to go far.

10-03-2005, 12:57 PM
I think there's also a Cheesecake Factory at Perimeter Mall, yummy!
Atlanta_eBride
10-03-2005, 01:17 PM
You have a ton of stuff to choose from in that area. Some othe restaurants to take a look at are:
McCormich & Schmicks (Not sure of the right spelling)
Chequers
Goldfish (at the mall with Maggianos and Cheescake Factory - ther's a steak place too right by all of these but the name escapes me)
Joey D's
Plus LOTS of old standby chains
graciebella
10-03-2005, 01:20 PM
You might want to look at www.citysearch.com for Atlanta. You can look at the "best of" categories, or do a search based on zip code 30346.
There are a bunch of ones I'd recommend in the area, it just depends on your taste and budget. If you like sushi, there's Goldfish. If you like steaks there's McKendricks or Ruth's Chris. For italian there's La Grotta or Magianno's. Seafood there's Mccormick and Schmicks or Checquers.
lowcountrywed's husband is a chef, so she might be a good resource for you as well.

Thanks girls! I appreciate all of the suggestions. I should have been more specific :) We want to try something new, so no chain restaurants. Also, we really don't have a price range...we live in Chicago, so we are used to paying a little more when we go out to eat and we don't mind if the food is worth it! I am going to check out citysearch, I don't know why I did not think of that! Also, I would like to go somewhere with a nice wine list.
Oh, can someone also suggest a nice mall to go to? I plan to spend some of my down time shopping :)!!
Thanks again!
eta: I just re-read and noticed that someone mentioned Perimeter Mall. Is this a nice shopping mall? Thanks!
lorialys
10-03-2005, 01:56 PM
Perimeter mall is a great shopping mall, and is probably very close to your hotel. They have lots of your "typical" mall stores and department stores. I went shopping there a lot in college with my roomates.
If you're looking for something more upscale however, you can try venturing to Buckhead (I'm sure they'd have directions at your hotel) and go to either Lennox or Phipps plaza. They have some more of the "ritzy" type stores you can't just find at every other mall in America.
lee60657
10-03-2005, 02:01 PM
Lorialys...Thanks! Is Buckhead far from Perimeter Center? I definitely want to go to the more unique mall. What is your sales tax there? In Chicago, it is 9%, so I was hoping to save a little tax wise when I was there.
Also, I am on citysearch now, have you heard of Babette's Cafe? It is on North Highland Avenue. It sounds cute and romantic, but I have no idea where it is in relation to the W Hotel. Or maybe Canoe? It's on Paces Ferry Road? It sounds very unique. It is just so hard to pick places when you have no idea where anything is!! Thanks for all of the help and suggestions!
graciebella
10-03-2005, 02:16 PM
Canoe is closer..mayby 15 minutes depending on when you go.
Babette's is probably 30-45minhourish again depending on the time.
Other places near Babette's to consider..Murphy's and La Tavola.
Perimeter has a Rich's, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's (I think that's open now)
It's kind of a upscale suburban type.
http://www.perimetermall.com/
Lenox has a Bloomies, Neiman Marcus and the requisite Rich's-Macy's.
It's an upscale urban mall.
http://www.lenox-square.com/
Phipps is more upscale than Lenox, with a Sak's, Nordstrom and Parisian, and
some great specialty stores

Thanks Graciebella! I don't think we want to drive 30-45 minutes. But 15 would be fine. Have you been to Canoe?
graciebella

No, we were considering it for our wedding but ended up not doing it in the Metro area. I've heard wonderful things about it, mostly about the setting.
Atlanta_eBride
10-03-2005, 05:43 PM
Canoe is wonderful, a little tricky to find since it's off the beaten path but well worth it. You're going to find more unique eating places about 30 minutes from where you are staying. The thing about Atlanta is you give about 30 minutes to go anywhere. You'll be on the north side of town and will be able to use GA-400 which is our $0.50 toll road that will shoot you right into Buckhead where you can go to Lenox and Phipps Malls. Perimeter Mall (where you will be) is good too but a very typical mall experience.
Also check out www.accessatlanta.com. This is a great Atlanta resource.
You could also look into Ray's on the River. FI just said the only two restaurants that are unique up at Perimeter that he could think of would be Joey D's and McKormicks.
graciebella, I see we were posting at the same time. ;) And yes! I do have a date and it's fast approaching!!

Thanks for the info Atlanta eBride! I think we may try Canoe. I really want to try something unique to the area as opposed to a chain restaurant. I am going to check out that website you posted too.
Graciabella - thanks for the info on the malls! I definitely want to head out to those malls too :) What is a trip without a little shopping?
Thanks again for all the great info!

Hi! I just wanted to drop back in and thank all of you girls for your great recs! We had a nice time, but the weather was not too great :(. We did end up going to Canoe and loved it! Thankfully my DH is good with directions so we found it without any major problems. We also hit up Perimeter Mall (since it was right next to our hotel) and then we went to the mall with LV, Burberry, Kate Spade, etc. I was in heaven!!!! We also checked out the Buckhead area. Anyway, thanks again for you help!

I live near Spaghetti Junction off of 285. I guess I could get to my house off of 85, probably off of a number of exits...either Jimmy Carter Blvd, Pleasantdale Rd, or Chamblee Tucker Rd. I take those when traffic is bad.
hey ladies! I was just wondering, is anyone interested in a GTG (http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=15277) while I'm in Altanta? I'll be around from Wednesday, 3/15 - Monday, 3/20 (over the weekend I'll be at the NC/SC GTG though). It doesn't have to be anything formal or fancy, we could do happy hour or coffee even.

hi everyone.
i'm glad i ran into this thread.
i need direction!
DH and I are considering relocating hopefully by next spring to Atlanta. Right now we are just trying to do some research online about different areas etc etc.
i might pop in every now and then and post some questions if that is okay.
i'm a little nervous about the traffic situation i hear so much about. right now DH commutes in the city hear and does hit traffic but at least here we also have the train as an option too. eeek
so far from my research i like the sounds of Henry county and Clayton county. are those areas really far out of the city?
its so funny how everything is referred to in counties. i swear half my friends dont know what county they live in here as we NEVER refer to things in counties.
we are looking for nice neighborhoods, low crime, affordable housing, somewhat close to the city, good schools. but we dont want to be out in the middle of nowhere - eek.
any recommendations?
also - this is going to sound silly but what is the weather like - i know its hot in the summer and somewhat mild winters (compared to what we are used to). but do you get hurricanes and stuff??? eeek they make me nervous!
When I first moved to GA, we livevd in Peachtree City. What a fascinating place that was.

Hi, Kiki! Sounds like you are looking in to the south side, huh? Henry County is a good area, so is Fayette and Coweta. I would love to get back in to Fayette, but housing costs are a little on the high side. They've got excellent schools though and some of the toughest building codes in the state. Unfortunately, us commuters have to go pretty far out of the Preimeter to afford a decent house AND be in a good neighborhood. I live in Coweta County and work up in Buckhead, so I know all about commutes. It usually takes me a little under an hour to get to/from work. Marta (the train) is an option, but it only runs as far south as the airport (College Park). We generally don't get hurricanes. Usually by the time they reach the Atlanta area they've been downgraded to Tropical Storms. Really, it's not that bad. I actually enjoy the wind and rain. The tornadoes get a little scary though.
Katy,
You couldn't have said it better. There is no other place in the country that's quite like PTC. Very interesting place. How long ago were you there?
I lived there for about 2 or so years ('88ish), then we moved up to Fayetteville for a year or so. Most of my time though was spent in the Roswell/Kennesaw area ('92ish-'98). I taught down in Grant Park for three years as well, where I left in '98.

TORNADOES- i didnt think georgia got those that much.
how often do you have them.
augh - i'm a little freaked.
I remember tornados!! We had one tear up the Kennesaw area when I was in college there. Scariest thing I've ever encountered. I didn't know what it was and was standing on my front porch (in what turned out to be the eye) watching everything blowing around. Crazy! Of course, now I know what to look for (and listen for) and don't think I'd be trying to watch the crazy sleet & wind during tornado season

I lived in Atlanta for four years in college (downtown for three years and Lawrenceville for one) and only saw a funnel cloud once. I'm terrified of tornados, but they really do not happen that often. There are lots of Tornado Watches in the summertime during thunderstorms though.

Hello Ladies, I need your help!!!
DH, our 9 mo old Daughter, and Myself will be relocating to GA within a couple of months from New Hampshire. I have been researching the area as much as possible and have come up with a few towns for us to consider moving to. If anyone has any experience living in one of these towns or can provide me with more information it would be greatly appreciated. The towns we are heavily thinking of are:
Peachtree City
Newnan
Stockbridge
Fayetteville
Mcdonough
I know the commute time for DH will be pretty high but he will mostly be working from an inhome office. He will only be at the office about 25% of the year. We will also be renting for a year to make sure its the right choice for us. Again, any information will be helpful~ TIA!!!
Edited to ask Are Flowery Branch & Sugar Hill good areas? I cannot find any stats on those cities. Thansk again ladies!!!

Astara: We (my DH, DS who is almost 8 months, and I) live in Newnan, and we really like it. We moved here from Smyrna (closer to Atlanta) about a year ago. Newnan is really growing fast. They're building lots of new stores and a really nice outdoor mall. I love how everything is so close to our house. We live within a couple of miles from all of the restaurants and shopping areas. Traffic is really only bad on the main street (Bullsboro). Newnan has several GREAT neighborhoods like ours that offer tons of amentities for families. Our neighborhood has three pools, a huge lake, tennis courts, a golf course, and lots of parks. I love it. I've seen a few houses for rent around our neighborhood too. ;) I don't know much about the apartments around here, but it looks like there are a couple of nice ones. My DH commutes to Decatur (close to downtown Atl) every weekday, and it's long but it's not as bad as it could be.
Newnan is about 10 minutes from Peachtree City. It's a really nice area, but the housing prices are really high. I think the apartments are pretty affordable, though. It's got some great shopping too, and many residents drive around town in golf carts. It's in Fayette County, and I hear the public school system there is excellent. Your DH would have a farther commute to Atlanta if you lived in Peachtree City because it's further from the highway (I-85) than Newnan. Still a great place to live, though.
I really like this area (Newnan and PTC) because it has lots to offer, yet it's not as crowded and busy as many other Atlanta suburbs.
Oh yeah, Fayetteville is a great town too. It's not too far from Newnan, so we've been shopping there a few times. It's also in Fayette County, which is good (Newnan is in Coweta). It's further from the highway, but still has lots to offer. We looked into that area and PTC before deciding on Newnan last year. We chose Newnan because it's closer to I-85 and the houses are more affordable.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them or private message me through CC. I'd be happy to help in any way that I can. :)
ETA: We considered moving to Stockbridge or McDonough a couple of years ago, but decided not to because they seem much more congested. They're growing really fast, plus the commute on I-75N can be awful from those towns. They're nice areas, though. My BIL and SIL (and their 2 kids) moved from Stockbridge to McDonough and finally to the outskirts of Peachtree City. They seemed happier near PTC.

Hi ladies! I'm joining up. DH, DD (Aidan) and I are moving to Columbus, Georgia, week after next. DH is in the Army and our first duty station is at Fort Benning.
I think the whole "move from the 4th largest city in the US to a small town" thing will take some getting used to. I'm very spoiled to having everything and every type of food so close. Of course, I'm also used to having to drive 1-2 hours to get across town, not having to do that again is nice!
Anyway, thanks for having this thread! I'm excited about getting to Georgia!

:D Thanks! I love that Georgia isn't a HUGE state. I mean, if I want to drive to Savannah, it's not that big of an undertaking. If I wanted to drive to El Paso from here...that's big. KWIM? I'm glad I'm getting away from a lot of the wide open spaces and urban sprawl (I'm sure Atlanta has it but I won't be in it unless I chose to go there).

tgray, that's true about being able to get around pretty easily within the state. I love Savannah and it's nice to be able to get there in about 3.5-4 hours. I'm actually going in less than 2 weeks. Can't wait.

JRPAGV Thank you for the reply and all of the help!! We are now thinking between those areas and alpharetta/cumming area (any experience in these cities?). Even though DH will only be there about 25% of the time, he thinks he still might want to be a little closer to his office... Newnan does seem like we'd get the most bang for our buck though. AH! too many choices~ ;) Is there a lot of crime in that area? I know PTC's is pretty low, but im clueless as to the other areas! :O)

We live in Newnan as well. However, I loved in PTC from the time I was 4 until about 4 years ago. I really love PTC and think it's a great place to raise a family (I think I turned out alright ;) ). Keith and I would love to get back in to PTC, but the housing and taxes are significantly more expensive as Janna pointed out. The school system is one of the best in GA. It's a small town so everything is close by. Like Janna said, there are over 90 miles of cart paths in the city, networking the entire city so you can easily walk/ride a bike/drive a golf cart to the grocery store, restaurants, etc. It was really nice growing up riding my bike around town and my mother would not have to worry about me in busy streets.
DH and I both commute in to Atlanta so being close to I-85 was important. Like Janna said, PTC is about 10 miles (maybe more) off of 85. And it's stoplights the whole way. Where we live now, we are only 2 miles from 85. We are actually in unincorporated Newnan, actually in between the cities of Newnan and PTC. I like it because I can get to either city in less than 10 minutes. However, Newnan isn't as pedestrian friendly as PTC. There are some not-so-good areas of Newnan. My suggestion would be to stay away from the older areas and stay closer to the interstate.
Cumming & Alpharetta are both really nice areas. Housing is VERY expensive though. Don't be deceived by the location. 400 is a really bad drive. I've got coworkers who live up there. Though they may live only 10 miles from work, and I live 42 miles from work our commute time is roughly the same. That's one of the little know secrets: not many people live down the 85 corridor so once you get past I-20 in the city, the drive is a breeze.
Sounds like there will be quite a few of us in this area! We'll definitely have to have a GTG!

I've seen a few houses for rent around our neighborhood too.
If you see anymore in your area, could you let me know via PM? Then I can do a little research on it. We arent quite sure yet if we are gonna stay here a few more months to save up some more money to just buy a house when we get there or rent for a little bit while saving up money. Im kinda on the renting side myself so we can get a feel for the area before we move to it permanently...
You guys are awesome! This is so hard to do from out of state!!

Hi Astara,
Not sure if you are still trying to move here or not, but I thought I'd tell you that in general Alpharetta and Cumming are very nice areas. Cumming isn't as expensive as someone mentioned. Alpharetta surely is, but you can still good some good bang for your buck in Cumming. However, 400 is a really busy road with heavy congestion in the am ... but 85 is no better. I would say, if you are looking for more options like hip places for dinner, good school districts, and overall entertainment options for family and just you and DH, etc. I would consider Alpharetta/Cumming .... if you are looking for more of a smaller town, less culture, slower pace, further from Atlanta, etc. then Newnan might be good for you. Have you considered Canton/Woodstock/Marieatta/Roswell? Also - is there a reason you are considering primarily cities south of Atlanta and not North? I could be wrong, but in general I think the crime is higher in the south (although not bad in any of the burbs) and the school districts are worse. Some of the worst traffic in the city is from McDonough thru Atl. in rush hour.
Hello ladies of Georgia!
I am coming to visit your state for the first time at the end of September. So I thought that perhaps you could point me in the right direction.
My husband and I will be staying in downtown Atlanta. Any recommendations about shopping, restaurants, things to do? We will not have a car.
I think my husband is intent on attending a football game. I've read that City Grill, Atlanta Grill and Spice are all great restaurants in the area. I'm not certain about shopping but did come across something about Peachtree Plaza? I was hoping to pick up an outfit for a wedding this month and hopefully a dress for a semi-formal function this fall.
I'm not sure about the weather there mid-end September. But it is certainly fall where I live. I'm confused about what I should pack?!
Maybe we should rent a car for the 5 days.
If you have any helpful hints that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tgoody! Im sorry I never replied, I just saw this response!! we looked around Alpharetta & Cumming (DH works in Alpharetta so that is why we were looking mostly in that area as well as we heard the areas were nice) and we could not find a house! Right before it was official there were tons to choose from then when we started officially looking everyone had taken everything! So it pushed us farther and we chose Lawrenceville. It is affordable, we live in a very nice neighborhood and Im in a moms group and most of them live here in LVille too! Its really nice I love it here! I am minutes away from the mall of ga! What a great mall that is!!! :)
Anyways thank you for the advice!

I don't know if I've posted here before. Gotta go back and check. Anyhoo, I'd love to meet the GA Girls! A gtg sounds great this summer. I live in the Atlanta area and would be willing to drive somewhat of a distance. :)

I'd love to do a GTG in Savannah, but it's on the Eastern border so some ladies on the western side might not want to drive that far.
Maybe a more central location? I don't know...I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Since it would 4+ hours for some (Savannah), I guess we should look into hotels.

I live in Savannah now, and I'd love to GTG! I'll also ask my SIL kphillips4 (who is on CC and LJ). She lives in Savannah too.
Liz, how funny would it be if you traveled to Savannah and we met, yet we lived less than five miles apart for almost two years and never got together? :D

I would love to have the GTG sooner rather than later. :D I know the only week I won't be free this summer (for sure) is probably the week around my anniversary, which is July 26th. I hope we can meet up sooner than that, though!
As far as hotels, I know there are lots of new hotels near me and the Savannah International airport here in Pooler. They might be cheaper than hotels near downtown.

I'd like to meet up with you guys but honestly, Savannah is too far for me (and pretty far for anyone from SW GA) for a weekend trip Please count me in for another time if we can make the meeting spot more central - Macon or south metro Atlanta come to mind. I understand Savannah is a first choice for many - and it is a great location - but not something I can do. The drive would be 4-5 hours each way for me.

July 15-18 (mmeblue suggested) is a Sunday-Wednesday. Weekends don't matter to me because I make out my own schedule, but I know some of you have work during the week. Thoughts?
Anyone else have dates to work around??????
After we get a date set in stone then we can post good hotels in the area.

Thanks for tracking me down Foley!
I live north east of Atlanta in Gwinnett County.
I work M-F so weekdays would be out for me. July would work great for me. My husband travels for work so I'd need to make sure the weekend selected doesn't conflict with his travel schedule so that someone is home with our son. Do keep me in mind, though!!

Janna,
I know, it would be pretty crazy.
Dates
I also work so I'd need for it to be a weekend. Any weekend in June would work for me (with the exception of the 16th as we'll be having DD's birthday party). Any weekend in July with the exception of the 21st, and any weekend in August with the exception of Labor Day weekend.

I actually live in FL now, but used to live in Savannah and DH's parents are there. So depending on the date and whether DH can get some vacation time, we might be able to plan a trip to Savannah so I'd be able to go.
I'm only definitely not free the last weekend in June and the first weekend in July. Any other time, we'll see.
Don't plan anything around me though, as it'll either work out or not. If not, I might be able to catch the next one as there's a chance that we'll be moving back to Savannah within the next year.

That weekend of the 14th is the only time I would be able to make it, but if other dates work better for most people that's fine. I am going to book our hotel room for that trip soon, though, so it would be great if I could know for sure whether I need to plan on coming up on that Saturday instead of Sunday.

Hi ladies! I'm trying to plan a family vacation to the beach and was looking to possibly go to a new place this year. We usually alternate between the Outer Banks and Myrtle Beach. I was thinking of Tybee Island this year, just for something different. Plus we could visit DH's cousin as he goes to Savannah College of Art and Design. Also thinking of Kiawah Island too.
We like to rent houses or at least a condo with a few bedrooms and a kitchen. I just don't know my way around Tybee so I'm not sure what areas are good to stay in or what the good rental companies are.
Thanks so much!

Lolly - I'm from the Outer Banks, and still live here. However, we're actually considering a move to Kiawah Island this winter (for SO's job). I've never been but I hear Kiawah is beautiful but super pricey. The other nice thing about it is it's close proximity to Charleston (just around the corner) for lots of things to do.
