View Full Version : Plus-size & shedding the pounds!

Just wondering if there are any plus-size women who are currently shedding the pounds? I've read a bit of the plus-size and proud thread and while I agree with a lot of the conversations about clothing and whatnot, I wanted a group more specific to what I am going through now with the struggle of weight loss!
So, my name is Diana, I'm a size 22/24 and have currently lost 24.4lbs on Weight Watchers. My primary reason for wanting to lose weight is for my health. I don't feel comfortable being this big and FH and I want to have children eventually and I do not want to be pregnant at this size since it could potentially complicate a pregnancy. I also want to be around for a loooong time and be as healthy as I can be, so for me, weight loss and changing my lifestyle is necessary!
Hopefully, I'm not alone in my struggles! :o

I haven't started shedding the pounds as quickly as I would like but can I tag along? Maybe we can act as cheerleader for each other. :)

Hi!
I'd like to join your group as well. I'm horrid about excericisng, so maybe you can help me tie those shoelaces! ;) I can't help it, I find most excercises extremely mind-numbing!! LOL.
I am curious as to everyone's motivation for losing weight. Myself, I have always fluctuated, but recently hit an all-time high, after an all-time low! Ack!
My jump-start was getting a bridesmaid dress on June 11. . . that I could BARELY zip up! I went from 187 on that day to 176, my current weight. The dress is still tight, but at least I can breathe in it now, and I'm not worried that I'll bust out of it anymore. (The wedding is this Saturday, the 20th.) I also have to attend an old friend from HS wedding mid-September, and would love to drop 10 more by then. . . though I know that's aiming really high. . . but 6 more would still be good! :)
Oh, I'm 5'4" tall and wear about a 16/18.
Good luck everyone!
Oh, and I'll apologize in advance. . . I'm not a big poster, most of a lurker, but don't worry, I'll be cheering you all along!! :)

Glad to see some others joining! Of COURSE you can join in eva! I should have mentioned in my post that it's for those who are starting their weight loss journey, in the middle of it, or at the end. Every perspective is valuable!

I am so ashamed I haven't lost this excess weight. :o When I actually apply myself the weight drops off easily but it is the getting started part that gets me every time. :p

Yeah, getting started was hard for me. Right now I'm finding it hard sticking to it. Stress eating is soooo not a good habit. When I recognize it, I change what I'm doing but it's not always easy to see that you're eating for the wrong reasons at the time. YKWIM?

I am currently on the SBD and loving it. I have lost 19 pounds so far. It's the easiest diet that I've ever followed. :) I was a solid 24 starting and am now a 22/24, so things are looking much better. :)

Hi!
I'm about a week into my latest attempt to lose the weight and stop eating so much junk! I'm a size 18/20 and would love to get down to a size 14.
I've been walking ALOT recently with a friend and it is sooo helpful. I hate exercise and I really need someone to motivate me to get off my butt and do something. She's definately doing that. We're also checking in a couple times a day about how the eating is going. I'm eating tons of fruits and veggies and small portions of everything else.

I would like to join. I am probably a size 20 now. My weight keeps creeping up. I am about 225 now. I hate getting on the scale. Back in college I weighed 220 and I went on a diet and I got down to 170. I was feeling great about myself. I was in 14/16 and it was awesome. I had friends to exercise with and it felt great. I moved back home and no friends to exercise with and keep my accountable.
Now I have a storage bag full of clothes I would love to wear but cant even get on. I remember when I lost all that weight I got rid of at least 2 huge garbage bags full of clothes. Guess I should have kept them. But I am determined because I too want to be healthy when we have children. So I am going to try SBD. I tried it back in May and lost 10 pounds. Then I got sidetracked. So sorry this is so long but I just wanted to say I know how everyone feels. I think it would great to have people to talk with this about. Thanks for starting the thread.

Oh, may I join?!! :D I am currently 206 lbs and at close to my all time high (220)thanks to my 1 year old DS and PP depression!).
I joined Curves three months ago and have shed a lot-14 lbs! I was too sedentary.
I want to be at around 175 and even more important, I want my BM to decrease to something safe before we TTC #2 next year. It's in the VERY high range and that scares me. I don't want to be this heavy because it is hard to feel pretty and find clothes that don't look like moo-moos
Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle and scrapped my knee this weekend because I fell outside, so I'm off the circuit this week at least. I'll need the motivation to get started again next week.
I look forward to supporting everyone and having a support group!! Good luck all!
ETA: I was a size 20/1X, now I'm a size 16W, or 18 regular!! It's a start!

Hey ladies, sorry I haven't been around but my wedding day is fast approaching and I don't have a lot of time to chat at the moment! That said, my eating has gone down the pipes. I'm making horrible choices, I missed my weigh in last weekend, and this week isn't looking too good for me since I'm PMS-bloating like crazy and had ice cream twice this week! UGHHHH!

lady, can you tell us more about curves? I hate exercise, but I need to do it - I'm curious about curves; I've heard that it's for "old ladies!" But it seems to be working for you. I'd like to know more before I go check it out.

I'll be watching this thread, but probably not participating much for the next several weeks, as I am still pg and don't need to focus on losing weight yet. I was 213 when I got pg and I now weight 239. I am down from 245, though, because I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to change the way I ate (not that I ate really horrible things, but I didn't eat proper portions). Now, I feel no qualms about taking measuring cups with me if we go out to dinner and measuring out 1/3 cup of rice or 1/2 cup of corn or whatever. I get weird looks, but I don't care because it is my health and my baby's health that matter to me, not how weird I look measuring out my food.
Pregnancy has been my rock bottom point. I knew when I got pg at 213 that I'd gain weight and be my heaviest during pregnancy, but I didn't expect the emotional toll it would take on my body. From not really finding cute maternity clothes that fit right (I want to wear the same things that come in XS-XL, not big t-shirts that seem to be stretched out of shape or rough fabrics with strange floral patterns on it) to just feeling even more large than before.
My goal, after the baby is born, is really just to get to a healthy weight. My endocrinologist told me that I should never weigh more than 160 at the start of a pregnancy again. I'd like to get down to about 145 or a size 4. I am a size 22 right now.
I have an elliptical machine at home and DH has weights. I've also got a gym membership that has been collecting dust during pg. I hope to put that to use again in a few weeks. With the nutritional information I've re-learned and had to learn how to apply, I think I should be setting myself up for a successful journey. I just know now that if I don't get the weight off, my health will suffer.

It is nice to see so many people here that have a lot to lose. I am so tired of listening to sticks tell me that they are having "such a hard time". BLAH!!
I have been following Weight Watchers the last two weeks, but not as closely as I should be. I lost 5lbs from my vacation and feel a bit better. I have also been working out 3 days a week with The Firm, but I can only do 20 minutes. I hope to build up my endurance and get through 60 minutes three times a week.
My starting weight now is 244 and I am wearing a 20-22 right now. I HOPE to get down to 140-150lbs. My hubby and I are trying for a child in July/August 2006 and he wants me down to a healthy weight before we start trying and trust me, I WANT TO BE THERE!! At 140-150lbs I take a size 6-8.

First part: I know exactly what you mean. And when you get pg, if you're still overweight, the pain doesn't end when people who are very slender start saying things like, "Gosh...I know it's the baby and all, but I can't help but feel like I just look fat." I want to say, "Woman...you are not fat. You're smaller than me on a non-pregnant day."
Second part: I cannot tell you enough how important it is to be at a healthy weight when you start your pregnancy. I'm not going to say, "Get skinny and then get pregnant" or "don't get pregnant when you're overweight," but the risks of complications are more for overweight women than women who are at a healthy weight. Especially if diabetes, high blood pressure or anything else that is made worse by being overweight runs in your family. So, instead of saying those things above, I will say, "Do your best to get to a healthy weight. I'll cheer you on!"

suzubeane- I 'd love to share my experience at Curves. It's pretty simple, you do short strength training exercises alternated with cardiovascular walking. It takes 30 minutes and that includes stretching. My Curves is very supportive. They have prizes for # of times you attend, activities, etc. The trainers are enthusiastic and the participants are supportive. My Curves isn't all old ladies. During the daytime, well, yes, but after work hours are all people in their 20 to 40's. I've lost weight and inches and one dress size in the three months I've been there. And best of all I've noticed more energy and more positive outlook when i go. The past 2 weeks I've been cranky and iritable since I haven't been to Curves. I can feel that I don't feel as well. My MIL has lost a ton of weight too. And they do offer a 6 week weight loss challenge that can help your eating habits. It's low carb. Seems good although I haven't tried that yet. I'd say, go into your local Curves and see what you think. Ask questions and ask if you can try the machines to see if yo ulike it. And definitly check with your doctor since it is a new work out. You'll want to make sure you can do it! Oh Cost: There's a start up fee, but look for the discounts (1/2 off, 2 for 1, etc) and then it's 29 a month if they pull it from your checking account. It's a 12 month membership and you can go on a medical leave if you need to without penalization. Hope that all helps! Ask more if you want!

Can I join, too?
I'm 5'1" and wear a size 14-16 and need to drop 60 pounds to get into the healthy range, 70 pounds to hit my ideal weight. I lost 20 pounds before my wedding in April, but have since gained back about 12. I had a lot of success using Fitday.com, but I've had a really hard time starting up again. I HATE constantly keeping track of what I'm eating. It makes me feel obsessive. But I know that's the only way to make any sustained progress. I really want to be at a healthy weight before we start TTC, which could be as early as a year from now. I was really happy to find this thread, because it makes me feel like I'm not alone. :) Good luck to everyone!

So, how's everybody doing??? I've slipped off my exercise wagon because of a sprained ankle and skinned knee. But restarted at Curves last night. Oh, I"m sore now. Two weeks off sucks!! But I do feel better mentally today. So that's a good sign. I've been feeling off for 2 weeks and I think that part of it was becaue I wasn't exercising.
Curves is offering a 6 week weight loss diet starting next week. I'm still debating if I want to join it. It's a low carb deal and I'm still breastfeeding although with a 1 year old, it's not as much about nutrition. I can't decide if I want to join this program or not. I don't want to wean my son for my vanity, but I want to be healthy and a lot thinner when I get pregnant next year. So I'm debating. Need to talk it through with my husband.
In good news, I went shopping last week and bought (clearance, gotta love it) two size LARGE   shirts and one pair of exercise pants in size LARGE!!  It was amazing! The pants are a bit tight, but they are comfortable. And man, they are size LARGE!! I weigh just under 200 (will get weighed and measured tonight to be sure), and was SHOCKED that these sizes fit. Are they making the cut of clothes more generous?

Hi Ladies!
Just stopping by to cheer you on!
I have to ask, and please, I don't mean anything rude by it, I'm just curious. . . several of you mentioned weighing between 140 and 160, and wearing anywhere from a size 4 (140 lbs gal) and a 6-8. . . . i have no idea how you all do that!! I once weighed 150 and I still wore a 10-12! Of course, I'm a bit shorter, 5'4", but still! That's incredible to me! You all must have a lot of muscles!
As to my progress, I'm down to 172-174 (Depending on the time of day I weight myself!), so I'm happier. . . I've kind of hit a plateu, unfortunately, which means I'll have to work harder or really watch my diet. . . I think the diet thing will be easier. I am looking for a new job right now and stressing about leaving the old one if I should find a new job (see my post in the Career and Jobs section if you're curious). . . . and that is NOT helping!
Glad to hear you all are doing well!!
I'll pop in again sometime and check on you all! Keep up the great work! As Denise Austin says: "Burn that Butter!" LOL, I just about die laughing everytime I hear that on her tape! :D

Well, I met with a trainer pre-pg and discussed my goals and my body shape and all that. I told her I wanted to get down to a size 2 (based on a friend's size...I like the size she is and wanted to be that size), but she said that was too small for my body shape and height and that I would look best at a 4-6. I asked what the weight was for that size and my body and she told me roughly 145.
When I graduated high school, I weighed 155 and was a size 8, so it seems about right for my body.

When I weighed 120-125 I was a size 6, but I'm only 5'1", so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. I have a pretty big frame for my height, which makes clothes shopping weird even at "normal" weights - I can't wear most petite stuff because my frame is too big, but then the legs and sleeves are always too long.
Anyway, last week was not the best - I had lost a pound, but gained it back with the tried-and-true combination of no exercise plus stress eating. :p I have several big things in my life converging on me at once over the next couple of weeks, so I suppose I should consider it a victory if I manage to maintain over that time. On the other hand, it feels like there's always some obstacle, and I get so frustrated with week after week of excuses as to why I haven't been making any progress. How do I stay on track while not putting so much pressure on myself that I just give up and start stress eating?

Hey Ladies! I'm back and I'm married!! I'll be back and focusing more on the weight loss asap. I went to WW to weigh in the friday before the wedding and I was down .4lbs. I hadn't been for 3 weeks before that, so I'm considering it a win! I'm afraid to go this Saturday because it's been such a horrid week for eating!!!!!!!!

Welcome back from your honeymoon DianaFaye!! Congrats on the marriage and the weight loss.
I have been having a rough month getting in to exercise, but this week, was good AND have been taking babe and dog for 1 1/2 to 2 mile walks every day this week. That plus Curves three times already this week is making me happy. But my eating has been BAD!
Here's my eating problem. When I think "I have to eat healthier", I end up reaching for bad foods. Not good ones. I sabotage myself. Anyone else do this too? If I don't think about it, I do better. Any ideas?

Here's my eating problem. When I think "I have to eat healthier", I end up reaching for bad foods. Not good ones. I sabotage myself. Anyone else do this too? If I don't think about it, I do better. Any ideas?Yeah - I do this, too. I think the trick is to have good foods on hand, and prepared. I've been grilling a lot of chicken breasts, cutting them up and freezing them. It's a PITA, but really convenient. One chicken breast per sandwich size zip lock bag, and throw them in the freezer. (Even my 16 year-old son has been grabbing a baggie to take to school for lunch. He's got no weight problem; just hates sandwiches.)
The other thing I try to remember that even a "bad" healthy choice (for me, that would be too much fruit in one day) is better than a bad unhealthy choice. (French fries on the way home, anyone?) I think we all know this, but I try to remember how much more satisfied (hunger and otherwise) I feel at the end of the day when I've managed to act on that knowledge.
eta: p.s. Lady ... Thanks again, for the Curves info; I did check it out but they open too late in the morning for me.

Sorry to hear they open to late. Funny, ours opens at 5 am and is open until 7 pm. I think I got very lucky with them, everyone else seems to have issues with theirs... weird.
Thanks for the ideas of healthier choices on hand. I just get so frustrated sometimes cause no matter what I try I sabotage myself. Every meal is a new start though, right?!

just wanted to come support and be supported. At my largest I was a tight 24 and 280 lbs. I've since lost 45 pounds have hit a plateau at 235 and I'm ok with that for right now. I'm walking 10 plus miles a week for work and trying to go to the gym. Eating better and its coming off slowly. I figure I didn't get this way over night so its not going to come off any easier than it went on.
I figured I was doing to much living to eat when really I just needed to eat to live and kinda adopted a new way of looking at things. Its helped curbed the boredom snacking and the emotional eating. I took off 9 pounds last month working hard and this month I have no motivation but that's ok I will next month. I've maintained 100 percent of my weight loss so far. When I plateau I am hard on myself to maintain that weight. I work to hard to take them off to let them eek back on. I'm currently down to a loose size 20 and the 2x shirts are getting baggy and I have to say... I LOVE IT
Hi everybody. I want to join too. I have been doing WW since the last part of June and I am down 25lbs. Trying to get to my 10% this next week, so wish me luck. I am now comfortably in a 24 pants and 22/24 shirt, coming from a somewhat tight 26, so I am beyond pleased with my progress so far. I am doing WW with my boyfriend, but sometimes could use a womens support view on the situation. (he's doing great also). We have both been heavy our entire lives, so we finally are ready to change it for ourselves. Hope everyone has a good weekend, and Congrats on being married Diana!

Hi all! Been lurking for awhile, so I thought I'd starting talking! Started "changing my lifestyle" in April started off 220 size 20...now I'm down to 180 size 16/18. I'm trying to do the low carb thing, except I'm doing it WW style! Counting my carbs like I use to count points! Seems logical to me! Who knows! Thanks for letting me join in!

I forgot about this thread. I'm glad to see that it's active again. :)
Let's see, since my last post, I pretty much went on a three week free for all. Now, I did eat healthier than normal, but I also indulged. The thing about indulging for me is that when I was doing it this time, it was usually only once per day. In addition to that, I was still making healthier choices (someone else gave the two much fruit example). Except the times that I caved and had pizza. :p The good news is during all of that, my weight stayed the same. :)
Since the beginning of last week, I have been paying more attention to my choices again and I lost 5 pounds last week! :) This weekend I did cheat some, since I had stew (made with white flour and potatoes), but still, I think those choices are better than some and if I'm going to cheat occassionally like that, I'm okay with it.
People are starting to comment that I look really good, which makes me happy. I wish I had a before picture, but the only ones I have are of me pregnant. It's hard for me to compare though, even though people are telling me that I'm looking slimmer.

Well, I was weighed and measured last night. I was hugely disappointed. I only lost 1 1/2 lbs in the whole month and 3 inches. I wasn't happy. But I did it to myself. Not eating right is going to get me every time! When will I learn this. And today I further punsihed myself by eating Halloween Candy corn all day and evenadded a Hershey bar. Can we say emotional eating... Grrr... I gotta kick this habit...But I don't know how...and with winter coming on, I feel like I'm just going to get depressed as usual and eat and eat and eat...I feel it already...Not a good day.

Don't focus on the pounds, focus on the inches! Three inches is definitely good progress, and all the weight means is that you're adding muscle as you're losing fat, so that's a good thing. :)
I've been doing horribly, but after making excuse upon excuse about why I just couldn't eat right and exercise, I've actually been pushing myself this week to at least do better. I hope this is the start of better habits.

Hey ladies- I totally need this thread. I have just been growing and growing and I am scared because I need a 24 or 26 in pants and a 22 or 24 in tops. I feel like I am on the edge as far as sizes go...what happens if I get any bigger? I don't want that to happen. So I have to face this head on. I need to do this for my health too as I am insulin resistant and type 2 adult onset diabetes is extremely popular on both sides of my family. I can't decide if I want to do WW again or try something else. I know the big key for me is excersise. This is a must...I need to learn to love it! I am glad to see I am not alone in all of this!

This is EXACTLY how I felt when the 24s started hurting to wear. I REFUSED to buy the next size. This was my 'rock bottom' with food addiction and in the last two years I've lost and kept off 45 pounds. I'm almost in a size 18 I bought a sweater shurg this week in a size XL not a 1x but an XL from the ladies department. Everyday I work at it. Some are good some are bad, but my thought is this... I didn't get this way over night
and how well would an alcoholic or drug user recover if they had to use a little bit 5 times a day? My biggest realization is that the cookie isn't gonna make me feel better about my bad day its gonna make me feel worse for eating it and that eating doesn't cure boredom. I also chew the heck out of some gum it keeps my mouth busy so that I'm not thinking about eating.
I haven't been on the scale in 3 weeks I've been so stressed with work and getting ready to relocate across the state that I just put it away for now. I'll be curious to see if I've been maintaining or loosing.
GOOD LUCK and Best wishes to all you ladies doing what it takes to get healthy! :o

Checking in again - I finally started up my FitDay account again, and so far things are going really well - I'm down 4 pounds this week! I know most or all of that is water, but at least now I don't feel so bloated. So that's a good thing all by itself. How is everyone else doing?

Hey, congrats on the four pounds! Water weight or not, it's still motivating.
I just joined Weight Watchers online, and I like it a lot. For me, it's even better than fitday for keeping track of stuff. I don't expect to see a lot of progress this week because I am still getting used to it, AND I had company over the weekend. But by the end of this week, I expect to be in full swing - I'm already eating much more healthfully.

Fitday is a website where you can sign up for a free account that will allow you to keep track of what you eat daily. It gives you the caloric and nutritional value of the foods, and will let you keep track of exercise, weight loss, set goals, etc.

Crap, just what I need a number to assure me I over eat! Seriously, though, that's a GREAT idea. I'm going to go check it out. I know I over eat and need to stop. Maybe a number will help me realize how badly I overshoot for the day!

One of the things I really love about FitDay is that you can customize your goals according to your needs. I have a fairly slow metabolism, so often plans like WW or eDiets don't work well for me because my body doesn't respond the way they say it should. With FitDay I figured out that if I eat 1500-1600 calories per day, I'll lose 1 pound per week very consistently. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes it's hard to find equivalents to certain foods. Like last week I had shrimp and tofu curry takeout for dinner, and FitDay only had options for chicken, beef, or lamb curry. But in general it's really great.

I just signed up and started entering what I ate today already. WoW!! A bit more than I should...maybe it's time to change some habits...

I don't think I've joined this thread yet (though I certainly qualify, except for the slacking the past month and definitely NOT shedding pounds  ), but I wanted to reply to this. I certainly feel your pain. My dad had to go on insulin, and that's what got my butt back to the gym. I decided I hated needles more than exercise. (That's saying something--there are few things I hate more than exercise.)
This time, I hired a nutritionist. I ignore her sometimes, and I have days when I just don't care. But for me, it has been better having someone to talk to about what is actually going on in my life, and what I can do on those weeks where I just wouldn't stay within my calorie target (similar to points). For example, I travel for work. I'll say to her "look, I am busy, and I cannot count calories/proteins/whatever this week," and we'll work out a strategy to prevent me from eating junk all week (somehow telling myself not to do it doesn't work  ). Additionally, she sets higher calorie targets than the WW points--this means weight loss might be slower, but I'm more likely to stick with it.
I've also been exercising, 4x a week (again, not this month!), and I still hate it (except my yoga class. I like that.). But I do it. Some days I have much lower intensity than others, but I try to make it "part of life."
Anyway, I've lost ~25-30 lbs since March. I've taken weeks (actually, up to a month) "off" at different times. Somehow, though, things feel different this time. Even if this is my new 'maintenance' point, it's better than where I was. And if I alternate periods of maintaining with the motivated losing periods, that should still help me avoid the yo-yo of the past 9 years.

Can I join? I am Jill. I am getting my groove back. Never had a weight problem until college. Then things went to hell in a handbasket
Since the beginning of the year, I am down 11.75 inches and 10.1 pounds. Last month I started again working out on an average of 3X per week with my FIRM tapes.
I know it is going to take a while but I gotta do it. I am starting slowly with the tapes and working on getting stronger

Just checking in - my weight has been all over the place lately, so it's hard to tell if I'm losing or not. I've been very good about putting everything in FitDay, but I haven't been sticking to my calorie goals very well. It would really help if DH would join me; he's gained 20 pounds since the wedding (and he was already almost 30 pounds overweight to start), but so far all he's done is complain about it.

Oh I'm all over the place too. I wish I could just buckle down and behave myself.

I haven't done much on the weight loss front but plan to get serious after the 1st of the year. I also switched jobs where I have to walk up three flights of stairs to get to my office (which sucks right now) and there is nothing around so I can't just pop out and buy a soda or candy bar. Plus I am bringing my lunch almost everyday. I felt this was a good start since I love the holidays and can't think of trying to cut back right now. I know this is a bad attitude right now, but......
Hubby wants to join in with me on Jan 1. This will be very helpful!!!

Now that the New Year is upon us, I thought I'd check in to see how everyone is doing. DH and I promised each other we'd lose 10 pounds by Valentine's Day. So far, I'm 3 pounds above where I was when I made that promise, so I now have 13 pounds to go. :( We have been exercising more, though, so that's a step in the right direction. How's everyone else?
