View Full Version : Dog Beds
I’m looking for some new dog beds. I would have 2 mid to large size dogs (65 pounds). I’d like to be able to wash the cover and my one of my furbabies tends to want to bite her bed – a lot, so it needs to be something that they can't tear into easily. Anyone have any recommendations?

Do you have a Costco membership or know somebody who has one?
Costco has great dog beds. They are $20 and huge! It's basically a large round pillow that you can take the cover off of and wash. Really nice. A lot better (and cheaper) than the ones I have seen at the major pet stores.
I have one (and it is way to big for my little dog, but I didn't care) and love it. My friend has a full size lab and he fits on his with plenty of room to spare.
Good luck!

Target has some nice ones too. I think I got our extra-large dog's bed there for around $30. The fleece/lambswool cover zips off for washing. The only problem is your chewer could definitely chew this one up.

One of my dogs chews his bedding up all the time! I've been trying to find something that he'll leave alone.

When I volunteered for a rescue, they had these beds: indestructible dog bed (http://www.kuranda.com/main/index.asp). They worked great and the dogs couldn't destroy them. The dogs were comfortable in them too. I just don't know if it's something you'd want in your house. ;)
ETA: they are not cheap, but if it saves the expense of constantly replacing beds, it might be worth it.

We got our dog bed from LL Bean (LL Bean Dog Beds (http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=1170&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&feat=dp31)) and while it wasn't cheap, it's survived for a year really well. It still looks brand-new and has been washed several times. Our lab is a chewer (chews everything but furniture and the house itself) so we're very happy with the bed. It's also "roomy" for her so she can stretch out. She weighs 90 lbs and we bought the size LL Bean recommended for her weight. Perfect fit.

Do you have a TJ Maxx by you? After looking for a long time and not wanting to spend over $100 I happened to be in TJ Maxx and got this really cute bed for my 72 pound Golden. It has a nice strong cover in a pink pattern that comes off for the wash, and nice filling. I paid $19!!! I don't remember the brand, but everytime I go back they have them!! We have had it almost a year, and for that price I really would not mind replacing it every six months.
Our dog sometimes decides to take her bed to pieces. We have the Kuranda bed (the one southhavenjen posted a link to) for her when she gets boarded (she'd tear anything apart that we sent with her). It's not all that pretty though.
I also like the Costco beds and pet blankets. We have a big square zip-covered foam one in the living room that she hasn't tried to take apart, but I didn't see it there last time we were there. She now has a big blanket in her crate with a couple of pillows. I think her tearing the beds to pieces came from wanting to rearrange it, and the foam wouldn't move.

I haven't actually tried this bed below, I have the Target ones that someone else mentioned (that are awesome for the price-mine was $35;something similar at Petco was $80ish), but they are chewable. My dogs used to destroy their beds, so for awhile they just slept on cheap comforters or blankets I'd pick up anywhere that they were on sale. As they've gotten a little older, they've stopped, so the Target bed has been the first nice on they've been allowed to have (okay so far). But anyway, I considered getting this one before:

My dog Jonas is a major chewer. He has separation issues and chews to deal with them. We have indoor kennels that we use for bedtime and when my hubby and I go out. If I put a toy in there he will chew his bedding to shreds regardless.
I might have to save my pennies and get an Orvis bed, those look pretty cool.

We just bought our boy an Orvis bed. He's a terrible chewer, but we had to kennel him for over a week so I just couldn't bear to have him spend that much time without a bed. Anyway, the Orvis bed is fantastic. Not a mark on it. Phew! :)
Dang, I wish I'd found the Orvis bed before I bought the Kuranda. It looks much more comfy. I'm thinking this a good opportunity for the very angry man:
Thanks for all of the suggestions! That money back Orvis looks pretty nice. Moxie has this great "trick" where she can unzip the dog bed and go in and start ripping the fluff out of the liner.

Bump!
I'm looking for a dog bed where you can wash the stuffing - I have a feeling I'm going to end up making it myself. Addy doesn't chew or destroy her bed, but somehow her nest-type bed has gotten 'the stink' and we can't get it out.
Any recs for a bed that's fully washable? Anyone make one yourself (a nest-type one)? Or anyone have any idea how to get the mustiness out of the foam bed we have?

Only advice I can give you from a mistake I made dont spend over a 100 bucks on a dog bed, we paid 180 for ours, it was a luxury one and really it wasnt that luxurious and now its gone, our pup chewed it up, well the stuffing at least!

Seb's Kitty -- have you tried cedar-filled beds?
We picked one up for Daisy about eight months ago. We have a pond/marsh area on our property and she frequently comes home covered in mud and smelly like icky pond water. Her old beds started to smell like stinky water too.
But the cedar bed is great. It still has a strong-ish cedar scent and it doesn't hold in the dog stink. Of course, you can't wash the cedar filled part, but the cover is fully washable.
Anyway, just a thought!

Like fuzzy we use cedar beds with washable covers. The cedar definitely helps with the dog funk issue. We get them at Costco, so they're reasonably priced, too. :)

We did use cedar beds with our other dog, but when we got a new puppy, she got all new bedding & didn't really start stinking it up :p Now that she's almost 2 and active, she doesn't have that 'new puppy' smell anymore so I will go back to cedar.
I did hate that you could wash the cover but not the bedding itself - so I'm going to make her a bed with a removable cedar insert (you can buy cedar bedding for small animals) and washable foam. So hopefully I can replace the cedar as needed and wash the other parts and always have a nice clean bed without replacing it every couple of months. :)
Whitlockan - oh, beds can get SO expensive, can't they? I wouldn't care about spending more if it lasted longer, but as you know, they don't.

Our Labs bed came from Cabella's.....it's Camo (but they have TONS of other beds) and we are able to take the camo cover off to wash it. Our dog hardly uses hers - since she mostly sleeps in the bed or on other furniture.

Sbe's....OMG they can get ridiculous, I've always wanted my beagle to have the best of everything but when you get a pup that obviously changes! I def. would recommend a washable cover though, when Shadow had that bed it was so nice and ya know now that I think of it the smells never penetrated beyond the outside cover, it was so nice!!
