It's a great area! Have you found a place yet? The prices tend to be a bit on the high side in our immediate area, but there are tons of apartments on Rossmore.

Be careful of Fairfax. It tends to be a bit dodgy below Olympic. Then again, isn't that just par for the course for LA?! We live on Rossmore right across from the Wilshire Country Club (we're the rent controlled crappy building in between the El Royale and the pricy condos), but right up the street not three blocks away is the corner of Melrose and Vine.

I could probably do the 13th. :)

I have a question for all you L.A. girls. Do you know of anyplace to go wine tasting near the city? Even like a restaurant or something? I'd really like to do a wine tasting/ spa day for my bachelorette party, but don't want everyone to have to drive to Santa Barbara or Temecula.

I know that Mousieur Marcel at the Farmer's Market does wine tastings. Any other ideas?

TIA! :)

there's a wine store in Pasadena that allows you to "arrange" private tastings. And there's a wine bar in Pasadena as well. Let me know if you need the names.

My friends and I (and several celebs believe it or not) go to Lanny Nails on Third and Sweetzer (right near the Bev. Center) - $22 mani/pedi. It's definitely not the poshest place, but I love Lanny and Cathy, and their pedicures last forever!! I spent $40 on one at Oasis and it chipped within a week - the pedicure I got at Lanny before our wedding lasted at least three weeks AFTER our honeymoon. (I was also so over the pre-wedding primping)

Hey guys, I just wanted to pop in and say that I enjoyed our "book club" gathering tonight (even if we barely talked about the book). It was so great to meet everyone.

We really do need to plan a real GTG. I'm going to wait and see what the docs say and how my schedule turns out and then plan one.

Also, if anyone wants the Pasadena Junior League info, just drop me a note and I can forward all the info you to.

I enjoyed it too, Katy. I'm such a lamy mclamerson for leaving early, but freaking work was calling, and I HAD to check in. Hopefully won't have the same issue next time.

I don't want to derail any intellectual accomplishments or anything, but maybe we should change the "mission statement" so to speak into a wine club -- I noticed a lot of us posting in the wine-o thread, and wouldn't it be fun to taste different wines and compare notes?

Why yes, I am a lush, why do you ask?

Does anyone have any recs for a place I can get my hair cut for under $50? I'm looking for a step up from Fantastic Sam's, but I have long straight hair that's relatively easy to cut, and every time I've spent a fortune I've hated it. Someplace between Farmer's Market/Fairfax and Westwood would be ideal, bonus points if it's close to Century City.

Thanks!

First weekend in NOvember is bad for me... :( First available is the 12th, or 19-20th of NOvember. It usually takes a month to get these on the ball....Who is in for a GTG???

Pick:

Which day is better for you.
Would you want to do lunch, brunch or dinner?
Where... Valley, Pasadena, South Bay, Grove???

Mine would be 19th, LUnch, Grove.

The ones that I have been to and liked in the LA area (I'm a teacher and sometimes I get lucky with the gifts!:p ) are Aqua Day Spa in Santa Monica (I actually think it's called Exhale Spa now...they may still be renovating) and Trilogy Spa in Hermosa. Trilogy is small and *really* relaxing, and I've never had a massage there. Both Aqua and Burke Williams are much bigger, so the experience is different. Burke Williams gives you great heated robes after your massage, though.

Mmmmm....spas.

My favorite thing about BW is that you don't need to bring anything - they provide it all - towels, robes, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, hair products, moisturizer, q-tips... everything!

Not sure if many LA mom-types read this thread, but I have a question.

I have a choice of Cedars Sinai, St. John's (SaMo) and Santa Monica UCLA to deliver our bundle of joy at. Anyone have experience with any of these places? We're going to do the tours, but I'm interested in first-hand accounts, if there are any. TIA!

Anita Sumen, MD is good and she has offices in Manhattan Beach near Rosecrans and one on Wilshire Beverly Hills. I haven't seen her in years but I remember liking her quite a lot.

Love Love LOVE my OB: Lisa Masterson (http://www.mastersonmd.net/). She's located in Santa Monica. I live in Inglewood and she's worth the drive (plus, I work in SM). She practices out of a restored, 2-story Victorian house on Ocean Ave., which makes a trip to the OB/GYN much more relaxed than in an institutional setting. ;) Plus, the second story is a day spa, which is nice - I actually started going there for waxing since I've been PG.

I like her b/c she takes her time and answers all of my (dumb) questions without being condescending.

Hey, are we planning a GTG for January?????

Katy
12-12-2005, 02:35 PM
I say the second weekend in January (and then we'll do bookclub the following weekend?) But I also think we need to just pick a day and those that can make it, can and those that can't, can't.

I don't remember what the consensus was on book club, but if I'm hosting (and I'd be happy to) I'd much prefer earlier in January, since I have to take the Bar Exam at the end of February and I'm already freaking out about it.

Just found you guys and am checking in. I'm in Miracle Mile, so I'm close to most things mentioned so far. Also, my OB is Gail Jackson, at Cedars Sinai. She's partnered with Lisa Masterson and Shanaeya Nelson (??). Dr. Gail is great, but Shanaeya is really great, too, if you've got questions and need more time spent with you.

I checked out the book club, too. I'm sad that I missed The Time Traveler's Wife, since I loved that book. My only hesitation is that I travel for work, and have a 4 month old baby, so I might miss more meetings than I make. :(

Still, if there's a GTG while I'm in town, I'll definitely come.

(Did anyone wear their wedding dress to the last book club?)

Book Club has been decided as the 29th.

I'm free the second weekend on Sunday. What were you thinking, lunch, brunch???

Katy

I think either brunch or later lunch to avoid any major crowds, maybe. You think some over by the Grove might be better - more central?

Hi Girls!
I have a question for the LA ladies:
I will be in LA for work January 9-13 and the last week of January. What can I expect weatherwise? What types of things should I wear? What weight jacket will I need?
Thanks for any advice you can lend!

stevesbabygirl
01-01-2006, 06:28 PM
We're in the middle of a storm right now, but I don't see it lasting for another week. The weather will likely be in the 60's, and perhaps the lower 50's/upper 40's at night, so I would pack according to that :).

So was the GTG set for the 15th?

Katy
01-02-2006, 04:28 PM
Yes, Sunday, 1/15 at a location to be announced when someone comes up with some ideas - over in the Grove (they have parking) or someplace on Third (where parking can sometimes be a bit of a challenge). I'm thinking a late lunch, around 2:00 PM or so.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Red'sGirl
01-02-2006, 06:27 PM
There's always the Cheesecake Factory at the Grove. The good is that it's big and can hold bigger parties. The bad is that they don't take reservations. Of course, 2pm on Sunday may not be as much of a challenge, but............

also at the Grove (sad how well I know this) is The Farm - pricey and not big. The Italian place across from the theater (Piazza?) which is pretty good and has an upstairs(?), the French place (need I say??) and Marmalade - which has decent room, decent food, and a great chocolate martini! After that, the Whisper Lounge is cool though not really big (an outdoor patio could probably take a larger party) and Maggianos (LOTS of food). There's a BBQ place and a Corner Bakery, as well.

I personally would go for either the Cheesecake Factory (cuz everyone knows what they're getting there) or Marmalade (for the martini - I mean the room). Of course, I have a baby, so I don't know if I can make it (or would be welcome). But I thought I'd get the conversation going.

Katy
01-02-2006, 07:35 PM
Thanks for the suggestions Redsgirl! I didn't know there was a Cheesecake Factory there. I'm up for that! Good food, good prices and yummy drinks and desserts - all the important things a girl would want! :D I'm also up for Marmalade (the BBQ place is pretty good too!)

As for babies, I don't see why she can't come. It's not like we're hitting some bar or kid-free zone. The one WC GTG I went to had a new baby along as well. So unless someone is against it, I say bring her along!

claribella
01-03-2006, 11:19 AM
I've penciled it into my book. I will also have my little boy. So hopefully he isn't to disruptive as he has been known to be at restaurants

Is 2pm set? I wouldn't mind maybe a brunch around 11ish. But if that is just me, no worries. I can do 2pm.

Did we decide where at the Grove?

Katy
01-03-2006, 12:07 PM
if we go earlier, it will be more difficult to seat a large-ish party, which was why I focused on later. It's currently between Cheesecake Factory and Marmalade. Talk amongst yourselves...

Where did you have your wedding gown cleaned/ preserved after your wedding? I really need to do this. I keep getting recommendations of places that send your gown to New York or something to be cleaned.... but I'd really rather have it done in L.A. Can anyone recommend a good place in the city?

Montaukbea, you may want to visit Main St. It's a cute street a couple of blocks in from the beach, with shopping and places to eat. I recommend the Library Alehouse. They have a cute outdoor dining area in the back and a vast selection of beer.

Here's a link with directions and a short write up:

Okay ladies, I'm hoping you can help me to help a friend (wow, total deja vu going on here). My friend is having her 40th b'day next month, on a Friday and is looking for the *right* location. She wants a place where she can maybe do a sit-down for about 15 or people, but invite others along for drinks (or even just a place big enough to handle maybe 30 people). The key is to keep in the greater LA area (WeHo is perfect!) and to find a place that won't kick us out once we've finished eating.

Any ideas? So far we have White Lotus (through a friend of a friend hookup), the Ritz in Marina del Rey (another friend of the friend hookup) and Richard suggest Cat & Fiddle. She is pretty open to anything, but it can't really be too funky (would make the elders uneasy) or too crazy trendy.

I have a question though: Can anyone recommend a good OBGYN?

I'm very picky about doctors, especially this specialty. I was so sad when my previous OB moved to Georgia. I had been through two others before I found my current doctor. I've been going to her for a few years now, and I love her.
Her name is Christina Adberg, (310) 278-1490. She's located at 8631 W. 3rd St., Ste. 510E, in LA right near the Bev Center. Her nurse, Ann is awesome too. I went through a miscarriage last month and they were sooooo helpful!

Good luck!

H&M is an inexpensive, yet trendy store. So you can find fun clothes, for nearly any occassion, at a great price. I just hope we get one with plus sizes. I was actually planning on doing a road trip this spring up to SanFran to do some H&M shopping. I wonder if it will go in the new "mall" area in Old Town Pas - over by the new Tiffany store. I can't think of where there might be another space large enough.

I wonder, do they all carry plus sizes? Do they all carry the special designer line (which I hear sells *right* out)?

Sooooo excited!!

I was at the Beverly Center last weekend and noticed that they closed The Gap-- down by Macy's. I was wondering if maybe H&M was going to go in that space. The press I've seen definitely says there's a store coming to the Beverly Center in the Fall. The poor Beverly Center could use a shot in the arm. The Grove has taken all its business. I was at the BC on a Sunday at like 2pm and the place was practically deserted. Not that I'm complaining-- it's so much better than battling the crowds and the parking garage (one of the inner circles of Hell) at The Grove. :D

If anyone needs a housekeeper, mine is a bit pricier than some, but she's very good--does windows, takes out the trash, does a good deep cleaning, is great with our dogs (they love her). I was reluctant to pay more for a private contractor (we were previously using a service) but my husband got fed up with the service and insisted on trying a private housekeeper. So far she's been worth the extra money.

She varies in price depending on your home size/situation. She does the Silver Lake/Glendale/Studio City-NoHo areas. If you'd like to try her out feel free to say Wendy and Ki referred you.

Katy - From what I hear some stores are just closing down altogether and some, for example, South Coast Plaza, are turning into Bloomingdales.

I went to South Coast today. I was not that impressed. Most things are just 30% off, some things, like winter scarves and fancy holiday-party purses are 50% off, and suits are 40% off. My problem was that they don't honor coupons (so no need to wait for the weekend to use the additional % off) and they don't allow returns! I am a big returner, so the 30% off wasn't worth it to me. Maybe as it gets closer to the end (and the % off increases), it will convince me to buy! Also, there is no discount on cosmetics and perfume.

I hope someone can help me.

I want to buy a restaurant delivery gift certificate for someone in Westlake Village (zip code 91362). I don't have a clue exactly where that is or what areas are close by.

The LA version of Take Out Taxi (LAbite.com) does not deliver to this zip code. I cannot find another delivery service on the web.

Could anyone suggest a restaurant delivery service that delivers to Westlake Village? Or a couple of nearby restaurants that deliver?

My friend is expecting a baby soon and I want to send her and family a nice meal or two.

Thanks!

I've been there a few times before. It has been a couple of years, but I remember it being just okay. I prefer the outlets in Camarillo.

On to scarier things: home buying in Los Angeles!!! We've met with the realtors we're going to use to sell this heap in Palmdale, and to buy a new heap somewhere in LA proper, and as far east as Pasadena/Glendale. I'm continually shocked (and terrified) by the housing market. Even with a large downpayment, we could potentially have a $3k/month mortgage!!! What the hell?!?! Anyone else in the same boat?

Yep! We are going to list our home in a couple weeks & just put a deposit on a new home yesterday. We've had an over $3k payment, including property taxes (but not supplemental) for the past 2 years. Now we're just trying to keep our monthly payment under $4k including regular & supplemental prop. taxes & that is after paying off $75k (home equity payment for improvements/remodeling & paying off a car) & still putting down a large down payment. We're basically taking all the equity of this home (which is a lot with what the market has done in 2 years) & putting it into the new home. And we're still that high in mortgage! It would have been a little better (more equity) if we could have sold last summer or fall because we still would have been riding that huge real estate appreciate wave..but we couldn't because the kitchen wasn't done being remodelled & we would have paid Capitol Gains since it was before 2 years.

Anyway...what can you do? It's crazy here. :o

I'm just wondering if anyone has infant daycare recommendations out there. We're looking for care for our three-month old starting in April. Thanks!

Meatpie, did you ever find an infant daycare? I know this was months ago...

I have two work friends who are expecting and haven't decided on daycare yet. Our corporate daycare is very pricy, and they're looking for other options. They were brainstorming the issue at work and so I told them I'd post the question here. Thanks!!

Great question, Rosebud. My daycare just closed, and I'm trying to find something in L.A. (Fairfax area would be great, but.....) that would allow us to bring DD part-time (and pay partime or is really inexpensive). I'm starting to think that maybe a babysitter/nanny part-time might be the answer. Ugh.

MaMa2D, my hairstylist works in Huntington Beach on Main St. I've known her since highschool and she's been doing my hair for many, many years. :)

She owns her own studio and works by herself, plus an assistant. She's always been awesome with my hair and I know her clients love her. She'll be going on maternity leave in the next couple of months though, so book her now! If you decide to book with her, tell her Michelle sent you.

She's a bit eccentric, so be forewarned! :)

I guess we'll just hang around Sterns Warf and check out the shops, food, skate park, and SB Sea Center.

I don't think we'll be there on Sunday, but I wanted to let everyone know that the Four Season's SB has finished renovating and their famous Sunday Brunch is now $64. Maybe I'll talk my husband to doing the camarillo outlets on Saturday and then head to SB on Sunday.

This notice was just emailed around my office. This is such a cute dog... thought I'd post the message here, too.

Please help... We found this wonderful, loving and beautiful lab puppy, we think about 6 months old, in the middle of busy intersection... very lost. We have combed the area looking for signs etc. and posted some of our own but with no success at finding the owner.

We have full schedules, a large Shephard of our own and must get this dog to a good home.... or to her proper owner. We just don't have the capacity to look after a puppy no matter how loving she is, and have VERY limited time resources to complete this search effectively.

We are in the Santa Monica, Venice, Mar Vista area (close to Marina Del Rey as well) We will be happy to deliver this puppy to one of your volunteers if you can connect us with one...

This puppy has lots of energy, needs & has lots of love to give and is house trained... although she did rip up a roll of paper towel as there were no dog toys around... but even at 6 months she knows not to go on the furniture, doesn't chew shoes and knows how to use the dog door. I can say that she doesn't like being locked outside away from where the action is as she'll put up a bit of a fuss to be included..

She is completely black with fur that glistens blue, white teeth & sparkling white eyes. She's quitely slept through the night at our bedside but is pretty rambunctious when she wakes up and realizes she's alive to play another day.

Please, if you can, will you try to connect us with someone who will look after her well and make sure she gets a good home?

You can e-mail me back but for swifter response please call my cel phone 310-490-4826.. if you can find us a caretaker for her we'll drop her off day or night.... or she can be picked up at our home near Santa Monica Airport by evening or our Store on Abbot Kinney, Venice during the day... so long as we have enough notice to bring her with us in the morning.

Thanks, Donna

Does anyone know of a meal delivery service that delivers to Ventura County & Santa Barbara? My MOH & her mom threw me a wonderful bridal shower a few weeks ago & I've been struggling to think of something to get each of them as a thank you gift evern since. Nether of them have the time to cook much & I thought that a gift certificate or something for a prepared meal delivery service would be right up their alley. I looked at Susan's Healthy Gourmet which I hear advertised on the radio all the time but they don't seem to deliver all the way up to SB. If anyone has any experience with such a company, I'd love to hear!

Thanks a million & happy long weekend!

Just a reminder that we should always be prepared for a major quake.

Southern San Andreas fault waiting to explode: report
Wed Jun 21, 2006 1:31 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - The southern end of the San Andreas fault near Los Angeles, which has been still for more than two centuries, is under immense stress and could produce a massive earthquake at any moment, a scientist said on Wednesday.

Yuri Fialko, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla, California, said that given average annual movement rates in other areas of the fault, there could be enough pent-up energy in the southern end to trigger a cataclysmic jolt of up to 10 meters (32 ft).

"The observed strain rates confirm that the southern section of the San Andreas fault may be approaching the end of the interseismic phase of the earthquake cycle," he wrote in the science journal Nature.

A sudden lateral movement of 7 to 10 meters would be among the largest ever recorded.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake that destroyed San Francisco in 1906 was produced by a sudden movement of the northern end of the fault of up to 21 ft.

Fialko said there had been no recorded movement at the southern end of the fault -- the 800-mile long geological meeting point of the Pacific and the North American tectonic plates -- since the dawn of European settlement in the area.

He said this lack of movement for 250 years correlated with the predicted gaps between major earthquakes at the southern end of the fault of between 200 and 300 years.

Elsewhere on the fault, there were average slippage rates up to a couple of centimeters a year that prevented the build-up of explosive pressure deep underground.

When these became blocked and then suddenly broke free they produced tremors or earthquakes of varying intensity depending on the movement that had taken place before and the duration of the blockage.

USGS says the most recent major earthquakes in the northern and central zones of the San Andreas fault were in 1857 and 1906.

Fialko said there were three possible explanations for the lack of observed movement in the southern section -- creepage under the surface that had no external manifestation, that it simply might not move as much as the rest or a major blockage.

"Except for the first possibility above, the continued quiescence increases the likelihood of a future event," he wrote.

Making calculations based on a wide range of land and satellite observations, he discounted the idea of creepage and warned of impending disaster.

"Regardless of fault geometry and mechanical properties of the ambient crust, results presented in this study lend support to intermediate-term forecasts of a high probability of major earthquakes on the southern SAF system," Fialko said.

I don't know of any daycare centers in Pas or S. Pas, but I can tell you how I found my daycare in my neighborhood. I called Pathways, a government agency that watches over daycares. They inspect and make sure that the licenses are up to date. They also give the number that you can call to make sure your daycare has no claims against it.

Anyhow, I called and gave them my zipcode and they gave me, on the phone, about 50 inhouse daycares in my general area. I set the parameters and they gave me the phone numbers (and only of the ones they thought would have room). Give them a call. There information is:

Pathways

hope that helps.
