I agree about the Martha Stewart thing.
Today I was at my LSS and I've been looking for a few items and I always go there first. I'd rather support the local store. So I asked if they had the item and the owner said no. Then I pulled one of her pre-made pages off the wall and pointed out that she always has the items in those. She told me that she uses her personal stash to make those pages. Huh? Shouldn't she be selling the things she uses? That's what I thought, so I asked. She said that for the most part, when Joanns and Wal-Mart, etc got into scrapbooking, several lines stopped selling to small stores like her ....so basically, she said the small stores get screwed and that's why so many are going out of business. Sad!!

That's so unfortunate. But around here - Walmart is considered a joke as far as scrapbooking supplies go. I don't even waste my time. And actually, so is Michael's. Our local stores are thriving - I guess I shouldn't take it for granted! :(

tgoody: Maybe you should suggest that if she carried lines that Michael's and Wal-Mart don't that she'd get more business.

mtysheera do you remember the names of the fonts you used for your pumpkin and trick or treat pages? I just got a silhouette, and I'd like to add those fonts to my library!

Here are some of my first attempts at digital scrapbooking. They are all nieces of mine.....

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/436011319_5ff734b439.jpg?v=0
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/167/436011331_bcb8811bc9.jpg?v=0
I like both types, so I will most likely develop a hybrid style! I can see where I would do completely digital layouts (the heritage book I've got ideas for), and of course, I'm very tactile, so I love the papers and the embellishments.... I'll never give those up completely!

Solongtogo: I don't remember the font names, but I'll search my fonts to figure out what they were. I'll also let you know a few others I really like using! Can't wait to hear how you like your silhouette!
ETA: Pumpkin font is Vantasyhouse, Trick or Treat font is Komika Boogie

Thanks!
I've not had time to really use the silhouette, but I did do the test cut, and tested it out using a font. It's quite user friendly, and the software was very simple to figure out. It comes with a huge library of images for free, and then quickutz offers more on their website, but they're pretty pricey (10 bucks apiece unless you have a download card, which go for not to terribly priced on ebay). It is somewhat loud when doing the cutting, but not ear splitting or anything extremely noisy.
When you cut, you put your paper onto a cutting mat that has one side with an adhesive, and you peel your letters off of that. The only thing I do not like thus far, is that if you use a very small font, it's hard to get the letters off the adhesive without ruining them. Though you can run your paper through a sticker maker first and then do the cutting which is what I'll end up doing if I do a small font...
I think it was very much worth the money...I paid 300 on ebay for it. Sizzix letter sets alone go for 150 a pop, and I've got well over 100 fonts on my pc, so the initial cost may seem expensive, but since you never have to buy fonts, it's cheaper in the long run.

Solongtogo: It really is a great investment! I paid $400 for my Wishblade and haven't regretted it at all! Like I said before, the one negative is that you'll have soooo many fonts you can choose from which takes some time to pick just one to use!
I was going to suggest running your paper through a Xyron before cutting, but you already know about that. The mats are super sticky when you first get them, but they will start to lose that. If you find that your mat needs to be stickier, you can use the repositionable spray adhesive that craft stores sell and spray your mat. It allows you to use it longer. Just be sure to tape over the edges of the mat so that they don't get sticky when you spray.
I'm hoping that eventually all the Silhouette, Craft Robo, and Wishblade softwares will be compatible. There are soooo many free files that people have created for the Craft Robo and Wishblade that would be great for you to use.

i've shopped with them before. generally have a good experience with them and they have good prices. however, in my last two orders, they forgot one thing in each of them--they were easy to contact and got the missing items shipped to me, but it delayed the projects i was working on.

Below are some LOs I did for my mom as a mother's day gift from DD. I also did one for MIL. The albums are 8x8. I used a lot of wallet sized pictures. It's much more embellished than I normally do, but not as much as some of you creative ladies!

Jen- I love your pages. I have a real stupid question here. There are some pages that have what looks like ripped pages. Did you just rip and use how it came out? I am really really really new to this scrapping thing. BUt I really like that look and would like to use it in a book I am doing for my cousin's bridal shower.

I'm not Jen but I can answer about torn pages. Yes, you can totally tear cardstock, patterned paper, vellum or even the pictures themselves (if you have a copy safely stored away, of course!) If you want a pretty clean line, just a little torn looking, use a straight edge to tear along. If you want a pretty free-form looking torn edge, just tear along, a little at a time. If you want a deckeled (sp?) edge, wet the paper with a q-tip along the line you want it torn on and tear from there. Good luck!

Bunny Nose - yup; tgray answered the question :) I wasn't a huge fan of ripped paper (not many of my friends did it) but I went to a different crop and I really liked the look. I don't do it a lot, but I like the result when I do.
Jesseybell - Actually, the 8x8 books only took me about 5-6 hours to complete. Now, granted, DD and DH weren't pestering me, but I was chatting and stuff. And I knew what pictures I wanted as well as the color palate I was going with.
Snowzilla and tgoody - Thanks! :D I guess it's just having time to do it and having a fairly good outline of what I wanted to do.

So- I did my first ever scrapbook this past week. I got so into it, I can't believe it. I did about 4 pages to day to finish it and it took 2 hours. Time sure does fly. I'd like to share some pages and ask for your criticism. I take it well, so be totally honest. This is from my cousins bridal shower 2 weeks ago. I did this book for her as an extra gift. Excuse all the blacked out parts as I didn't think is was appropiate to post other peoples pics without permission.

Very nice, bunnynose! Excellent first book! It looks a heck of a lot better than the first book I ever did. :o
My only comment, since you asked for criticism :) - is that when you're laying out pictures in a pattern, such as in your second layout, try to make them even in relation to one another - my eye was immediately drawn to the fact that the photos on the left and the photo on the right have uneven spaces between them. Hope that makes sense. (The bottom of the top left photo sits about a half inch below the line of where the top of the right photo is, and the top of the bottom left photo starts only a quarter inch above the bottom of the right photo. And this is why I am not allowed to give driving directions.) I guess what I'm saying is the symmetry is off. ;)
The last three LOs are the best, IMO. But I do love the way you placed your "Bridal Shower" title in the first one. :)

Thanks Lydia and snowzilla!
I totally see what you are talking about snowzilla. I didn't notice it before but now I see it. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to be more careful in the future.
I got a huge compliment from DH on it. He said, "That's nice. You should go into business doing that." I was floored by that. Usually I'll get something like, "Lovely" and he won't even really look. But he looked at the whole thing before it was done and then when he noticed I was done looked through it again. That made me feel really good.

I finally got some scrapbooking done today! First time in months!
Still have to put on the journalling for this one. It's all printed, but the ink wasn't dry (damn printing on vellum - I printed it once and had to re-do since I now have words on my fingers).

I may find a little spoon or something to stick next to the title. I had the fork up there, but a) I didn't like the knife alone and b) it overlapped the picture below and I didn't like that either.

question about 3D elements on layouts...like ribbons and such, do you use page protectors on your pages over the top of them? do they add a lot of bulk to your albums or do you keep your albums thin of pages so you add 3D elements?
tgray99
05-21-2007, 04:28 PM
I just stuff it all in there, thick or thin. A tip is to store your albums upright so the lumps don't dent the facing page.

I went to tgray99's house last night and she helped me make an Abby scrapbook for Joey for Father's Day. So I can't take credit for any of the pages (well I helped pick out colors). The only page I did by myself was the paw print red page with Joey and Abby. I'm still excited about it and I will be buying more scraping stuff. I will branch out and not be as nervous about messing up.

So I just finished my wedding album. Actually, I should say I just finished redoing my wedding album. I made the mistake of doing one of my most important albums as my first scrapbooking project and it was awful! So I had to redo it because I couldn't bare to look at it anymore. So here are some of my favorite LOs from my new and improved wedding album:
The album starts out with the story of us and how we met:

Beth ~ Love your wedding pages. Two years later and I'm just now getting ready to start my wedding book. If you don't mind I may have to scraplift some of your layouts. :D
How big did your book end up? I have a professional album, but want to do a scrapbook with the non-pro pics (and some of the pro pics that didn't get in my album). I also wanted to include some of the pre-wedding parties, 2 bridal showers, rehearsal dinner and then honeymoon. I'm just worried that I'm not going to be able to get it all in one album. Plus I'm still looking for a paper line that I really like. It's just so hard!

Jen Thanks for the compliments. Hey, I scraplifted most of the pages from my wedding album so far be it for me to deny someone else the privilege. :p
Honestly, I should've waited to do my wedding album because like I said before, I did it the first time having never scrapbooked before and it was truly awful. I mean BAD. My wedding album ended up being 26 pages (front and back) and all of the LOs fit nicely in the album. It's not overflowing or anything so it worked out. I also included things like searching for my dress, my wedding shower, getting the tuxes, etc. in the album itself.
Chimichanga Awww... you're so sweet. But I honestly can't take credit for that page. Like I said, I saw that LO in the PeaNut gallery on the Two Peas in a Bucket website, and that LO is actually what motivated me to redo my album because I absolutely adored it.

The poem reads:
Santorini,
You are the most beautiful place on earth.
You have hypnotized us with your manifesto
on the wonder of nature.
I pray our paths will cross again one day soon.
And if they don't,
I can only hope
That heaven will be as magnificent
As your earthly splendor.
For how can a place so unfamiliar
Feel so much like home?

beachlvr Back in April, I think, you posted some pics of a book you made for your SIL to fill in with pics when the baby arrived. I wanted to thank you so much for that idea. A co-worker of mine is becoming a grandmother and I am going to do that for her as well. I don't know her son, so I wanted to give her something for her as well as a gift to give for the baby. I love the idea of the scrapbook for her to add pics.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Now I have a question- I need help with page ideas. So far I have:
- Precious granddoughter
- Grandma and baby
- My baby and his baby
- Mommy and baby
- The happy family
- First trip to Grandma's house
Any others?
Thanks girls!

daddy and baby I'm using "My baby and his baby" for that. She has only one child, so I thought that would be good for that.
grandpa and baby Good idea, but she is divorced and hates her ex. But if she says anything I will make a page to add to it.
No siblings, or cousins on her side as her som is and only child. Thanks for the ideas!!!!!

I just finished an album from Summer 2004 when we were living in Germany and our friends came to visit us. Here are some of my favorite layouts from that album:
Our trip to Dachau Concentration Camp:

I have to share the journaling with this layout because otherwise this page isn't nearly as funny:

Journaling:
To get to the top of the Sommerrodelbahn, you have to take a chairlift (as displayed on the previous page). On the way up, you notice that this luge course is in the middle of a cow pasture and there are cows all over the place. Remember this because that proves significant later in my story...
When we reached the top, Brad decided he would be the guinea pig and volunteered to go first. Well apparently he didn’t realize that you’re supposed to use the break on this thing because he went down at full speed and wiped out. I mean, he scabbed himself up good. But stupid him, instead of just getting back on the sled, all of a sudden, we look down and see him trudging up the hill carrying his sled. The guy who worked there saw him first and immediately shouted down the hill, “What the hell are you doing?”
Brad: “I fell off.”
Luge guy: Yeah, no sh*t you fell off. I saw the whole thing. Just keep going.”
What was even funnier about this exchange is that Johnathon had to translate between the two because the luge guy didn’t speak English. So here you have Brad stating the obvious, and Johnathon having to tell Brad that the luge guy basically called him an idiot.
What added insult to injury though (and we didn’t find this out until later when we were leaving) was while Brad was walking back up the hill, and this is where the part I asked you to remember becomes important, he goes to hop over the little fence that was used to keep the cows in, and wouldn’t you know it, the fence is electrified! So Brad got himself a nice little shock to go along with his luging battle wounds.
So needless to say, when Brad informed us of this little debacle that we were unaware of, we were all wiping the tears from our eyes we were laughing so hard. What we still don’t understand is why he didn’t just get back on his sled and keep going. At least then we would’ve felt sorry for him instead of laughing our asses off at his expense.
I'm a sucker for play on words:

Journaling:
Our trip was not just fun and games. No, it was also about searching for things we had lost.
1. When we took the night train to Warsaw, we parked out car at a secure parking garage in Berlin. Upon our return to Berlin, despite our car showing no signs of forced entry, our $500 GPS unit had mysteriously disappeared. We think our glove box was a portal for a black hole.
2. In Warsaw, we were all extremely tired before the day had even begun. All of our traveling was finally starting to catch up with us and we started to become a little careless. Unfortunately for Wendy, that carelessness caused her to leave her $200 sunglasses in the bathroom at McDonald’s, and upon returning there in attempt to recover her expensive shades, they had already been lifted by someone.
3. The duck. Well, what can I say about the duck? Yes, it’s true. Our trip was not just about vacation and having a good time. We had to try to find Wendy’s duck too. We chased that damn duck across 5 counties, and STILL couldn’t find him. In order to locate him, I think another trip will be in order. Hopefully this time though we won’t lose anything else!
This page feels like it's missing something, but I haven't figured out what to add to it yet:

I am working on a scrapbook for my youngest sisters 10th birthday that is coming on up the 27th. (I know, I'm not giving myself much time.) Anyway, this is only my second scrapbook ever, so I am starting with an 8x8 and filling it with pictures of my sister and my DD. She is such a great aunt, and loves my baby so much that I thought she would love this.
Anyway, here are the four pages I did tonight. Any suggestions or criticism would be great, as I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing. lol.

(bolding is mine) A lot of the times, simple looks better though. tgray99 told me it was called "sticker sneeze" when a scraper put stickers everywhere. Don't go overboard, simple is better a lot of the times.

bunny nose - I think your pages are adorable! I love the soft colors. I think you have a LONG way to go before you are guilty of a sticker sneeze ;) but its good to be cognizant of that danger. On your particular page, because your cardstock is patterned, I think its a safer bet to go with less, rather than more embellishments, but I don't think you went overboard at all (Im sure your co-worker is going to be thrilled! either way) - but it's all just a matter of personal preference - for instance, I might keep the pacifier, but I would flip it, so it's pointed downward :) Excellent job though!

 Oh gosh bunny nose - you didnt have to move the pacifier! (I was kind of using that as an example - because pro or con-pacifer; pointed up or down - its all subjective, so you might get as many opinions as reviewers.) ;) And then again - someone will catch the length thing and you want to kiss their feet! :D I like having fresh eyes seeing a project, sometimes you are just too close to it. :)
How many pages are you doing for her? and when are you giving it to her?

Well, since you had pointed it put I took a long look at it, and decided it was better the other way. It was no problem to move it at all. I also like having fresh eyes look at whatever I am doing because its hard to find things that you may have done wrong or just don't look right.
I think I am going to make about 15 pages for her. These are the pages I am doing:
- Precious granddaughter
- Grandma and baby
- My baby and his baby
- Mommy and baby
- The happy family
- First trip to Grandma's house
I am doing an 8x8 book. So I figured 2 pages for each area. An announcement page and maybe 2 general pages. Maybe 4 though. We'll see. I got these ideas from a journal buddy. If you have any other ideas I would love to hear them. :) I will probably give it to her sometime in December. The baby is due in January.

Thanks, guys! It got dark before I read this, so I sucked it up and scanned it. I will have to try to take pictures of my old 12x12 album for suggestions tomorrow.
Here's my 8x8 that I started the other day. This is my first real scrapbooking endeavor. I almost bought hundreds of dollars worth of stuff a few months back(posted about it in the other thread) but I figured I should start with the basics. We moved to Cali last year and will only be here for a couple years so I'm just going to do a "Cali" book with a couple pages on each thing we do, starting with our roadtrip out here. If we take a big trip or do something exciting I can devote a whole book to it. I figure I can always take the pages out of this and move them to multiple books-I could even matte them on 12x12s, I suppose.
They're not complete, which is while I'm posting them for suggestions. I guess I'll post my thoughts on each page, and any suggestions anyone has time to provide are appreciated. =)

Have you ever heard of Becky Higgens Sketches? She really does have a unique and fun way of putting together layouts. There is a Vol 1 and a Vol 2. If you get one, go w/the Vol 2 because it tells you what sizes to cut the photos to match the layouts in the book.
It may sound dorky, but this has REALLY changed the way I scrapbook and I cannot believe how awesome my layouts are now. If I ever get the time to scan some I'll post. But the magazine is well worth it IMHO.

Actually, you can find quite a few of Becky Higgins' sketches online without ever buying anything.
I use the archives as a reference quite a bit:

They're older, but still work nicely! They are seperated out into the amt of pictures you have. I usually end up modifying them slightly to fit my needs.

Can I just say again what a wonderful friend you are! Your pages are beautiful!!
As for the ribbon, some things to try - have the loops a little smaller perhaps. My rationalization (even though I don't know how rational you really should be while being creative! :D ) but since the ribbon ends right by the baby blocks - and they are square, I would go for a little less loop (so the bow would be a bit more square than rectangular). Or you could try tying them like a tie - and not really have a bow, but just ends (but that might be too 'masculine') or maybe angle the loop ends to a 45 degree angle 'into' the page. Trial and error. :D

Aww- thanks girls!! I was very hesitant on starting scrapbooking because I really don't want all of these books all over my house. I did one for me and loved it. So I figure if I do it as a gifts for others, it will satisfy my craving to do crafts, but leave my house book free. LOL I am going to be making one for SIL's sister who is pg. Will start that aftert this one is done.
As for the ribbon- I guess I have to play around with it and figure something out. Time and patience is what I need. LOL
Thansk again girls!

I don't scrapbook much, but I have done one or two books in the past, and I love lurking on this thread. Everyone was asked to do an 8x8 page for my uncle for his 60th birthday and I just did mine today:

Yay!!! New layouts!
amyintn~I love the little hand and footprint embellishments in your 6th photo! Where did you get those?
I need to get some photos done and uploaded here. I finally started on DS's album in some very non-traditional colors for a baby album, and I'm really liking how it's turning out!

I have a question for you all. I'm not a scrapbooker, but I often use scrapbook paper for other crafts and stuff. I am doing a railroad theme birthday party for my son, and I have been looking for some great paper to use for a banner and some other things. Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone knew of where I could possibly get paper with trains on it (or even a nice railroad stripe!). I have looked and looked - online and in stores - but haven't found anything. Does anyone either know who would have it specifically or just a good source to check out online? I don't know the best sites to look at.
Thanks!
