I thought I was pretty familiar with different types of rashes but this one has me stumped.

This showed up on DD two days ago. It is located right around the tabs of her diapers, but not at all under the diaper where you would expect to see a diaper rash. There is also a little bit on her arm. It kinda looks like poison ivy to me, although I am pretty sure that's not what it is.

It doesn't look anything like DS's eczema. He has also has roseola and impetigo and it doesn't look like either one of those. Our clothes are still completely fragrance free. She is just getting over RSV, but hasn't had any fever or other rashes or other symptoms other than coughing and a runny nose.

ETA: sorry, those pics are terrible.

Michelle, which ped do you use? If you are associated with Children's, you can call their 24/7 line and email the pics to the dr. I did that once with Paty's rash to see if I needed to bring her in.

Could it be a heat rash? Is she taking any new meds? New diapers?

It reminds me of the rashes some that kids got from tagless clothing - it was big news last year.

Could it be from the tags on her diapers?
New diapers or maybe the company changed them recently?

boilermaker: I called them and they told me the same thing they always do - call my ped.

So I did - they looked at it and don't know what caused it or what kind of rash it is but they are guessing it is her diapers since it is mostly in that general area. They said I can put cortisone on it. She said it almost looked like chicken pox but that it wasn't really presenting the same way CP usually does.

Thanks for the input.

Michelle - Do any of the bump/raised areas now look like they have something inside them? Like something yellow (pus'ish)? My DD had a rash that started looking like those photos and got worse, some of the raised areas had stuff in them and then they got crusty. It was staph.

As of now, no. But my DS once had impetigo which started as red, raised bumps and then became the yellow, crusty patches so I will definitely keep an eye out for her rash to start to look like that.

Are you sure that it's not just from her diaper tabs rubbing? That's the only other thing I can think of. My DD gets red spots/welts if the tabs aren't fully on the diaper and instead rub when she moves. They're usually a little ways down from the diaper because it's actually her fat rolls rubbing on the diaper instead of the diaper rubbing her, IYKWIM.

Well it doesn't really look or feel like a friction rash. They are more like clusters of mosquito bites - large pink bumps. But who knows?

DD was put on antibiotics today for an ear infection anyways so I guess we'll know in a few days if it is bacterial or not.

My DD's are welted as well, much like that. I think it's a combination of friction and maybe a mild allergy (?) to something in the diaper once the skin is broken.

How long does it typically stick around?
